Vancouver Airport Authority recently celebrated Air Canada’s inaugural seasonal three-time weekly service to Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) from YVR. The highly anticipated service marks the first non-stop flight from Vancouver to India and highlights YVR’s continued growth as a premier connecting hub between Asia and the Americas.

“Thanks to Air Canada’s commitment to growth out of its preferred transpacific hub, YVR has a direct link to one of the most iconic cultural centres and economic hubs in India,” said Craig Richmond, president & CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “This service has long been requested by our com-

munity. The much-coveted route opens up access to key markets in business and travel and creates more jobs and opportunities for our communities.”

The new service began just in time for the vibrant festivities of Diwali, the annual Hindu festival of lights, and was made possible by advances in aircraft technology, which allows lighter aircrafts to fly further while requiring less fuel and thereby improving the economic viability of the route.

“We [were] delighted to inaugurate our second route between Canada and India right in time for Diwali celebrations,” said Benjamin Smith, president, passenger airlines at Air Canada. “Our

non-stop flights from our AsiaPacific Vancouver hub feature 787-9 Dreamliner service and offer the shortest elapsed flying time from Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Seattle, Portland and Los Angeles to the Indian subcontinent. Our non-stop flight, coupled with our streamlined and seamless connections process at YVR translates to a savings of 3-5 hours compared to itineraries with connections in Europe or Asia.”

Air Canada will operate a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, featuring 30 International Business Class lie-flat pod suites, 21 Premium Economy and 247 Economy Class seats with upgraded in-flight entertainment on this route.

Coming up, Air Canada will launch Dreamliner service to a new route from Vancouver to Taipei— All Nippon Airways demonstrating its continued push to make YVR the preferred transpacific hub.

Vancouver Airport Authority president and CEO Craig Richmond’s monthly column touches on life at YVR. This month, Craig talks about how nextgeneration aircraft have made new routes from YVR viable, and the history of the Dreamliner at YVR. We’re all about innovation at YVR—and so are our airline partners. For instance, on October 20, 2016, YVR and Air Canada celebrated the start of non-stop service to Delhi. This not only marked an important growth milestone, but also a noticeable evolution in aircraft technology.

The new route was made possible thanks to the Dreamliner 787 aircraft, an incredibly efficient machine that uses the same amount of fuel per 100 passenger kilometres as a compact car. It’s also ultraquiet and has a more agreeable atmosphere inside the cabin that makes travellers feel pretty good after a long flight.

To celebrate the ongoing success of our Dreamliner services, let’s take a look at some of the highlights over the last couple years.

Air Canada Air Canada stepped up next, with Dreamliner service to Beijing, Seoul, Shanghai and Tokyo-Narita in 2014. And, more recently, launched Dreamliner service to London, Brisbane, Newark and Delhi on the new 787-9 model, which features increased fuel

Xiamen Airlines And one more: Xiamen Airlines, our newest Chinese partner, who started Dreamliner service to Xiamen on June 25, 2016. Thanks to Xiamen, YVR is currently served by five mainland Chinese carriers—that’s one more than any other airport in Europe or North America. And this will soon go up to six, with the introduction of our new partner, Beijing Cathay Pacific Airlines, in December.

Cathay Pacific But it’s not just the Dreamliner that we’re excited about. On March 28, 2017, Cathay Pacific will introduce the Airbus A350-900 on its YVR to Hong Kong route. Like the Dreamliner, the A350 is efficient, comfortable and completely focused on the passenger experience. It has ultra long-distance capabilities and a range of features that improve on its predecessors.

In fact, as YVR continues to grow, we expect that the 787 and A350 will become the mainstay aircraft.

Like airports, airlines face fierce competition and they are always looking for ways to economize routes while improving the passenger experience.

The answer, as always, is innovation—the bridge between possibilities.

“Our state-of-the-art aircraft, multi-lingual crews, onboard offerings, in-flight entertainment, which includes Bollywood hits and acclaimed multi-lingual art-house films, together with our extensive western Canada domestic and western U.S. transborder network and the seamless connection experience through YVR, all position Air Canada and YVR to be the preferred gateway hub for Pacific Northwest travel to and from India.”

As a direct result of the new Vancouver to Delhi service, more than 90 jobs were created at YVR and throughout British Columbia. Additionally, $5.4-million in Gross Domestic Product, $1.9-million in taxes

and $3.4-million in wages were added to the province.

“Having B.C. and India directly linked by air will help facilitate trade and business relationships as well as allow families and friends to come together more easily,” said British Columbia Finance Minister Michael de Jong. “On behalf of the Province of B.C., I’d like to thank Air Canada and Vancouver Airport Authority for working to establish this direct flight between B.C. and Delhi.”

In 2015, close to 50 per cent of passengers welcomed at YVR came on Air Canada aircraft.

These numbers reflect the airlines exceptional growth out of YVR in the last two years with new routes to Osaka, Cancun, San Jose, San Diego, Chicago, Dublin, Brisbane and Delhi.

Looking ahead to 2017, Air Canada will launch three new international destinations including daily service to Dallas Ft. Worth starting February 6, followed by thrice-weekly service to Nagoya on June 1 and daily service to Taipei on June 8.

Halloween celebrations take off at YVR The annual celebration of ghouls, goblins and ghosts was celebrated at YVR with some brand new activities throughout the terminal.

On Monday October 31, more than 65 participants dressed up for the occasion and a chance to win $250 YVR Bucks.

Halloween participants and guests alike were treated to Pumpkin Spice Latte samples from Starbucks and candy sam-

ples from Lick.

Travellers and members of the airport community were also treated to a special Halloween-themed dance performance from Harbour Dance Centre at The Spirit of Haida Gwaii: The Jade Canoe.

A special thank you to everyone who participated and took the time to produce their costumes and make Halloween so much fun for the airport community.

Members of Harbour Dance Centre delighted spectators with a Halloween-themed dance performance.

Royal proclamations were delivered by a suitably attired participant.

Air Canada plans new international routes in 2017 Air Canada has opened reservations for its planned service resumption of it VancouverTaipei Taoyuan (TPE), Taiwan route, previously served until October 2002.

Air Canada will use Boeing 787-9 aircraft when it begins daily service June 8, 2017, on the route.

AC011 will depart YVR at 11:15am, arriving in Taipei (TPE) at 2:20pm, one day later.

AC012 will depart TPE at 4pm, arriving at YVR at 11:30am.

Effective June 1, 2017, Air Canada will also resume thriceweekly Boeing 767 service from Vancouver – Nagoya Chubu (NGO), Japan. This is a service resumption previously served until December 2001.

AC1955 will depart YVR at 12:45pm, arriving in NGO at 3:15pm, one day later.

AC1956 will depart NGO at 4:40pm, arriving in YVR at 9:55am.

Air Canada rouge increases Vancouver-Dublin service Air Canada rouge is expanding its summer 2017 VancouverDublin service, adding a 4th weekly flight.

The airline will operate Boeing 767 aircraft from June 11, 2017 to October 7, 2017 (frequency varies from September, 2017). Planned schedule, including revised operational days, as follows: AC1940 departs YVR at 3:10pm, arriving in Dublin at 8:20am, one day later.

AC1941 departs DUB at 9:50am, arriving in YVR at 11:15am.

Air Transat cancels Vancouver-Rome summer schedule Canadian leisure carrier Air Transat will not operate Vancouver-Rome service during the summer 2017 season.

The airline previously filed a weekly seasonal service from June 16, 2017 to October 7, 2017, however this is no longer available.

British Airways updates summer 2017 operations British Airways has made an

adjustment to its planned London Heathrow – Vancouver operation, for summer 2017.

The airline’s A380 seasonal service will begin from May 1, 2017, instead of June 1, 2017, and operate until September 30, 2017.

Lufthansa Munich service update Lufthansa has updated its planned Vancouver-Munich, (MUC) Germany summer 2017 service.

This seasonal service will operate from May 1, 2017, using Airbus A330-300 aircraft on a daily basis.

LH476 will depart MUC at 3:20pm, arriving at YVR at 4:55pm.

LH477 will depart YVR at 6:35pm, arriving at MUC at 1:50pm, one day later.

Previously, the airline scheduled four-time weekly A330-300 and thrice-weekly A340-600 operation.

Sichuan Airlines adds to VancouverSzhengzhou service Starting this month, Sichuan Airlines is adjusting operations to Vancouver, resulting in the launch of a new Chengdu – Zhengzhou – Vancouver routing.

From November 11, the airline’s A330 aircraft will operate this route twice-weekly.

The airline’s existing thriceweekly Chengdu – Shenyang – Vancouver (twice-weekly during off-peak season) will be reduced to weekly as a result of the routing change.

Transport Canada bans Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones from all aircraft Transport Canada has informed airlines and air operators that Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones are no longer allowed in any aircraft, effective immediately.

This safety measure applies to both carry-on and checked baggage on flights within Canada and is in compliance with the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations.

After dozens of reported incidents of overheating smartphones worldwide, Samsung made the unprecedented decision to recall every single one of the smartphones sold. Samsung has also asked “all carrier and retail partners globally to stop sales and exchanges” and urged all

owners to power them off and “take advantage of the remedies available, including a refund at their place of purchase.”

Samsung has been issuing special kits to package the devices for returns; they consist of an antistatic bag that the phone is to be inserted into, and three layers of boxes—the last of which is lined with ceramic fibre paper for fire protection.

The shipping box also contains instructions explicitly stating that they are not to be shipped by air.

Transport Canada officials are also in close contact with the Federal Aviation Administration in the United States to exchange safety information.

Airbus explores cabin innovation for passengers with limited mobility Visiting the lavatory in-flight can be a complicated and unpleasant process for wheelchair users—often requiring assistance from travelling companions to get on the on-board wheelchair, as well as for transfer from the wheelchair into the lavatory.

As a result, a team at Airbus in Hamburg, Germany is participating in a joint project focused on developing a new on-board wheelchair that will provide more independence for passengers with limited mobility. The cantilever-style chair on wheels has a specially shaped seat that makes it possible to roll the chair directly over the toilet so that the passenger does not need to transfer.

This cabin mobility innovation resulted from a workshop that collected experiences, requirements and requests from wheelchair

users at a Hamburg-area organization specialized in creating employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

In just three weeks, project members developed a working prototype of the chair, which requires no structural changes to an aircraft lavatory.

Airbus Cabin & Cargo Engineering department created the design, the Airbus ProtoSpace team supplied the technical prototyping knowledge and apprentices and trainers from Airbus produced the demonstrator.

Following its short development, the wheelchair was field-tested with the Airbus Rapid Architecture Lab’s lavatory mock-up by wheelchair users, who provided rave reviews: “the design is easy to handle, stable and safe.”

Airbus forecasts China to generate the world’s largest aviation traffic flow Airbus forecasts that China will need nearly 6,000 new passenger aircraft and freighters from 2016 to 2035, with a total market value of US$945-billion. This represents 18 per cent of the world’s total demand for more than 33,000 new aircraft in the next 20 years.

According to Airbus’ 2016-2035 Global Market Forecast, new deliveries of passenger and freight aircraft for China will be 5,970 over the next 20 years, including 4,230 single aisle aircraft and 1,740 wide-body aircraft.

China will become the lead country for passenger air traffic, for both domestic and international markets as the passenger traffic in China will grow well above the world aver-

annual growth rate for all international traffic from/to mainland China is forecast to be 6.7 per cent.

By 2035, the propensity for the Chinese population to fly will grow from 0.3 trips per capita today, to 1.3, a higher level than the whole of Europe’s propensity to fly today. This will be driven by economic factors such as growing wealth and growing private consumption.

These developments combined with agreements to ease travel between China and other major markets have meant, for example, that Chinese outbound tourism is now double that of inbound, with more than 100-million outbound tourists reported.

Global IT provider SITA and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) have released a business case study, which reveals that the highly accurate tracking rates of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology could reduce the number of mishandled bags by up to 25 per cent by 2022, mainly through efficient tracking.

In particular, RFID will address mishandling during transfer from one flight to another, one of the key areas identified

by SITA and IATA where the technology could help improve baggage handling rates.

RFID technology will ensure that airports, airlines and ground handlers are able to keep track of bags at every step of the journey and ensure the right bag is loaded onto the correct flight.

The technology also supports IATA’s Resolution 753 that requires airlines to keep track of every item of baggage from start to finish by 2018.

The deployment of RFID would build on the already sig-

nificant savings delivered by the smart use of technology for baggage management.

According to the SITA Baggage Report 2016, technology has helped reduce the number of mishandled bags by 50 per cent from a record 46.9-million mishandled bags in 2007, saving the industry US$22.4-billion.

This improvement comes despite a sharp rise in passenger numbers over the same period.

The SITA/IATA business case shows that the improvements in handling rates do not come at a great cost. RFID capabilities can be deployed for as little US$0.1 per passenger on average while generating expected savings of more than US$0.2 per passenger.

With some larger airlines and airports already introducing RFID technology, combined with the fact that it is compatible with existing barcode technology, adoption of RFID across all airports could provide a positive return for airlines, both in cost savings and passenger satisfaction.

UPS expands fleet Cargo with Boeing 747-8 Freighters

United Parcel Service (UPS) has ordered 14 Boeing 747-8 Freighters. The agreement signed last month also includes an option to purchase an additional

14 of the cargo airplanes.

“These aircraft are a strategic investment for increased capacity for UPS customers around the globe,” said Brendan Canavan,

president, UPS Airlines. “The 747-8 will allow UPS to upsize our network in both new and existing markets.”

With its iconic nose door, the 747-8 Freighter has 16 per cent more revenue cargo volume than the 747-400F. The airplane also reduces the noise footprint around an airport by 30 per cent, compared to its predecessor.

Transportation 2030 strategy to provide better service and more choice Canada’s Minister of Transport, the Honourable Marc Garneau was at the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal earlier this month to present his Transportation 2030 strategy to key transportation stakeholders from across the country.

Transportation 2030 is based on the five themes around which the Minister consulted with more than 100 key industry representatives, academics, thinkers and Indigenous groups across Canada over the past six months.

“This plan addresses the needs for the future of transportation in Canada,” said Minister Garneau. “It will move our transportation system forward and support the economic growth of our great country for the benefit of all Canadians and particularly the middle-class and those looking to join it.”

Highlights of the Trans– portation 2030 strategy pertaining to air travellers: • Pursuing legislation to provide greater transparency, clarity and fairness for Canada’s air travellers, including clear standards for treating and compensating passengers under specific circumstances • Pursuing legislation to change international ownership restrictions from 25 to 49 per cent of voting interests for Canadian air carriers

and conditionally approving requested exemptions for two companies, Canada Jetlines and Enerjet, from the current international ownership restrictions • Working with Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) to ensure that travellers at Canadian airports go through security faster, while maintaining the same high security standards • Working to ensure that drones (unmanned air vehicles) are subject to simple, clear and enforceable regulations The National Airlines Council of Canada (NACC), the trade association representing Canada’s largest air carriers, said it looks forward to working with the federal government as it develops its Transportation 2030 plan. In particular, NACC carriers will urge the government to address the pressing issue of Canada’s high aviation cost structure, the number one barrier to growth of Canadian commercial aviation.

Canadian leisure carrier Air Transat welcomed the decision to introduce legislation increasing international ownership limits in Canadian air carriers.

“We are pleased with the Transport Minister’s initiative, which paves the way for greater movement of capital and more liberalization of air transport markets,” said Jean-Marc

Eustache, president and CEO of Transat. “Our airline, Air Transat, is a leader on the transatlantic market, and we view [this] development as potentially facilitating access for our company to attract commercial opportunities in this important travel sector.”

WestJet was supportive of many of the measures reflected in Transportation 2030, but promised to continue pressing the federal government to tackle the issue of escalating costs in Canada’s commercial aviation.

“We recognize and appreciate the extensive consultation that has been undertaken by the federal government over the past year and we are supportive of many measures announced,” said Gregg Saretsky, WestJet president and CEO. “However, we firmly believe the largest challenge to ensuring low fares for Canadian consumers is the rising cost of aviation infrastructure.

Canada is a much more expensive jurisdiction in which to operate than other jurisdictions.

We are disappointed government has not signalled more clearly a willingness to meaningfully review aviation taxation and cost structure.”

Over the coming months, several other specific initiatives will be announced by Transport Canada to implement the key objectives stated in its Transportation 2030 strategy.

Romanians and Bulgarians will travel visa-free to Canada The Government of Canada has announced it will lift the visa requirements for Romanian and Bulgarian citizens on December 1, 2017, which will mean visafree travel to Canada for citizens of all EU member states.

In the lead‑up to the full visa lifts, Canada intends to implement partial lifts for eligible Romanian and Bulgarian citizens travelling to Canada for May 1, 2017.

Romanian and Bulgarian citizens who have held a Canadian temporary resident visa in the past 10 years or who currently hold a valid United States (U.S.)

non-immigrant visa would not require a temporary resident visa and would be able to fly to or transit through Canada with an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) instead of a visa.

Applying for an eTA is a simple online process, costs only CAD$7 and takes just minutes to complete. The eTA is electronically linked to a traveller’s passport and is valid for five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.

Bulgarian and Romanian travellers not eligible for an eTA can apply online for a visitor visa or use the services of one

of the visa application centres in Bucharest, Romania or Sofia, Bulgaria.

Over the coming months, Canadian officials will continue to work with the European Commission and with the Romanian and Bulgarian governments on migration-related issues to lay the groundwork for a successful transition to visa-free travel.

After the visa lifts, Canada would reserve the right to reimpose the visa requirement on Romania or Bulgaria should irregular migration trends increase significantly from either country.

Boeing contributes more than US$3-billion annually to Canada’s economic growth and development, according to a study by Doyletech Corporation.

Doyletech, a Canadian strategic management consultancy, examined Boeing’s contribution to the Canadian economy through three different areas: Boeing as an “Agile Producer;” direct and indirect contributions to Canada’s science policy and national science and technology objectives through Doyletech’s EconWin economic impact model; direct, indirect and induced spending and jobs related to Boeing operations and supply chain in Canada.

president for Global Sales for Canada. “It’s about creating measurable long-term partnerships across government, industry, research centers and the community. Doyletech’s study demonstrates that collaboration between Boeing and Canadian industry can produce widespread, mutual economic benefit and technological growth for decades.”

The study supports what Boeing describes as the development of a tailored “industrial engagement plan,” related to its bid to sell its F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jets to the Canadian government.

Qutb Minar At almost 73 metres tall, Qutb Minar is India’s tallest minaret and the tallest brick minaret in the world. Rovinescu became president and CEO Air Canada on April 1, 2009. He is also the chairman of the Star Alliance Chief Executive Board, the controlling body of Star Alliance and is a member of the Board of Governors of the International Air Transport Association, having served as its chairman in 2014-2015. He is also a member of the boards of directors of BCE Inc. and of the Business Council of Canada. In 2015, he was appointed the 14th chancellor of the University of Ottawa.

NAV Canada to invest $170-million in infrastructure

On November 1, 1996, a newly created not-for-profit company called NAV Canada became the owner and operator of the country’s civil air navigation system. The private sector company assumed responsibility from Canada’s federal government for providing air traffic control, airport advisory and flight information services.

Since then, NAV Canada has invested more than $2-billion in new technology and facilities and has built a global reputation for developing and implementing advanced air traffic management technology solutions. Eight countries have purchased and are now using technology developed

by NAV Canada.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, NAV Canada plans to increase the level of its

capital expenditures by investing $170-million in fiscal year 2017—$40-million more than the company’s typical annual average.

“Canada’s air navigation system has an unsurpassed record for safety and efficiency, which is a testament to the talent and dedication of NAV Canada employees across the country,” said Neil Wilson, president and CEO, NAV Canada. “We want to build on our success through this commitment to a significant expansion of our capital program. This involves projects with multi-year timelines and a pace of investment we expect to continue over three years, subject to economic and business conditions and appropriate annual approvals.”

diture from now to 2019 will focus on key facilities, including Area Control Centres (ACC), Air Traffic Control Towers and Flight Service Stations (FSS).

In addition to the expansion, refurbishment or replacement of these facilities, NAV Canada also plans to continue to upgrade power systems and make important investments in air traffic management technology and new business systems.

A significant amount of funds will also be devoted to modernizing critical elements of the communications, navigation and surveillance infrastructure, including continued investment in space-based ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast), which is set to revolutionize global air traffic surveillance.

On January 22, 1992, Dr. Roberta Bondar from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, made history when she became Canada’s first woman astronaut and the world’s first neurologist in space, when she flew aboard Space Shuttle Discovery as a crew member of Mission STS-42.

Twenty-five years later, Canadians can celebrate her inspiring accomplishment with the world’s first-ever curved and glow-in-the-dark silver coin.

“My view from Discovery 25 years ago forever changed my view of Earth and instilled in me a commitment to protect this magnificent planet,” said Dr. Roberta Bondar. This special coin symbolizes the beauty of Earth from space. We need to celebrate our milestones and pioneers as we push the frontiers of

The coin’s reverse design by Canadian artist Alexandra Lefort combines vivid colour with glow-in-the-dark effects to recreate a breathtaking view of Earth from space, with a direct focus on Canada.

The outer band framing the coin’s central design features Dr. Bondar’s name and text highlighting the anniversary of her space mission, as well as a miniature depiction of the space shuttle Discovery, as it appeared on the mission crest of STS-42 crew members.

A recent article in a community newspaper questioned whether the Richmond Olympic Oval, which was built for the 2010 Winter Olympics, was “worth it.”

Here are some of the facts.

Accessibility and Community Use 1. In 2015, people attended events at the Oval more than 900,000 times—including regular use by the Oval’s more than 6,000 members, 81 per cent of whom are Richmond residents.

2. More than 40 sports groups were active in the Oval throughout 2015. More than 2,000 children participated in Oval Sport Camps. Subsidized rental rates are provided to numerous community sport organizations.

3. More than 140 sports have been played at the Oval since opening.

4. The public may participate in the Oval’s programs by purchasing a day pass or membership. Complimentary community access is also possible through special sport, cultural and entertainment events, sport team practices and other public services.

5. The Oval has received 39 awards for excellence in architecture and usability, including being the only North American recipient of an All-Time award for excellence in Olympic Legacy facilities.

6. The Oval also has been awarded Best Sport Adventure Centre by the Georgia Straight five years in a row and recently won a Best New or Improved Attraction in Canada award for the Olympic Experience.

7. Thirty-eight athletes who train at the Oval represented Canada at the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Government Funding and Oval Profitability 8. In 2015, revenues were $16.1-million and operating expenses $13.8-million, resulting in a $2.3-million surplus.

9. The Oval Corporation is required to reinvest all profits or surpluses back into the facility.

10. The Oval Corporation has generated a profit / operating surplus in every year of post-Games operation.

11. The City’s contribution of $3.3-million to Oval operations in 2015 works out to a City cost of $8.43 per square foot (second lowest after Minoru Arenas), as opposed to $3.15 to $126.04 for other civic facilities.

12. The City owns the Oval Corporation and upon consolidation of the City’s and Oval’s financial statements the net

cost to the City in 2015 for the Oval was $1-million ($2.3-million Oval profit minus a $3.3-million City contribution).

13. The Oval pays for its own maintenance, operating and capital costs.

14. The Oval generates additional longterm revenues through enhanced sponsorship programs and has attracted more than $8-million in sponsorship funding to date.

Maintaining Olympic Relationships 15.

The Oval’s ongoing relationships with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), and National Sport Organizations (NSO) assists it in its efforts to provide the latest equipment, best coaches and programs for members, athletes and the broader community.

16. The Oval receives benefits and cost savings with an estimated value in kind of $5 to $6-million annually from the IOC and COC. Further enhancing this value are the Olympic Rings on the building and ability to use the term ‘Olympic’ in its name, which has contributed to attracting significant sponsorship dollars.

17. The cost of the Olympic relationships is paid from funds generated from sponsorship. The average cost of Olympicrelated obligations is between $50,000 and $70,000, annually.

18. Over the past 10 fiscal years, the Oval has received more than $27-million from the Games Operating Trust (GOT) to support its role as a high-performance sport centre. The Oval continues to receive roughly $2.5-$2.8-million annually from GOT, a key reason the City decided to build the facility and participate in the 2010 Olympic Games.

19. The Oval’s high performance sport program generates more than $1-million a year in revenues. Hosting of highperformance events, on average, generates an additional $235,000 in revenues annually.

20. The Oval received an invitation from the COC to participate at the 2016 Olympic Games and to activate at Canada Olympic House. Its partnerships have provided many financial benefits to date with modest business development investments.

Advantages of synthetic versus conventional oil

In the last 10 years, vehicle manufacturers have redesigned engines to meet fuel efficiency and emissions standards. Most vehicles built after 2012, and many built after 2000, require synthetic oil. Even though it has been recommended by many vehicle manufacturers for more than a decade, many drivers are not clear on the differences between synthetic and conventional oil.

Oil serves four functions in a vehicle’s engine: • Reducing friction between moving parts • Removing heat to the cooling system • Keeping the engine clean by moving dirt into the oil filter • Creating a seal between the piston rings and cylinder walls So, what is the difference between synthetic and conventional oil? The answer is pretty much everything.

While both synthetic and regular (mineral) oil both begin in the ground, the similarities in their final outcome is starkly different.

Conventional oil is refined from crude oil and during the process contaminating elements are removed. The oil refining process separates the various types of molecules in the oil by weight, leaving molecules similar in weight but dissimilar in structure, which reduces performance.

Synthetic oil takes the process further. It is derived from conventional oil but is further processed on a molecular level to create a uniform oil molecule.

These customized molecules provide higher levels of protection, such as better friction-reduction and superior lubrication.

Because of its uniform structure, synthetic oil performs all of these tasks much better and for far longer than regular oil.

It also withstands greater heat than mineral oil and can act as an insurance policy against engine

damage should the engine run too hot.

While synthetic oil does cost more than conventional oil, this cost is minimal when compared to expensive engine repairs.

Always check your owner’s manual to ensure that the right lubricant is being used. If synthetic oil is required, the warranty coverage for an engine problem could be endangered if incorrect lubricant is used.

Advantages of synthetic oil • Superior protection of an engine’s moving parts • Flows better when cold (when most engine wear occurs) • Reduces friction, which saves money on fuel • Lasts longer than regular oil • Does not break down at high temperatures • Provides excellent protection for turbo-charged engines Another good use for synthetic oil is as a salve for older engines prone to sludge buildup. This residue can block oil passages and lead to the quick demise of an engine.

In the early 2000s, several engines from Chrysler, Toyota, and Volkswagen, among others, were especially prone to sludge build-up. This sludge forms when oil breaks down.

Using synthetic in these situations will prolong the vehicle’s oil life and require fewer changes. That’s a major benefit to the environment, since used motor oil is a major source of toxic waste in water.
