Airlines:

Starting on June 30, 2017, Hong Kong Airlines will begin non-stop daily service between Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and Vancouver International Airport (YVR). This year-round service will mark the airline’s North American debut and offer increased access from Vancouver to Hong Kong, a global hub for commerce, culture and cuisine. “Hong Kong Airlines is a well-known, family-friendly airline based in a worldclass city and we are thrilled

to be able to offer the public even more options to travel between Vancouver and Hong Kong,” said Craig Richmond,

president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “Every new airline that chooses to fly to YVR means more jobs for

the local economy and creates new opportunities for British Columbians.” Hong Kong Airlines (HX)

will initially operate the route using an Airbus 330-200 with 283 seats. The airline operates one of the youngest fleets in the world, with an average aircraft age of 4.1 years. Its fleet consists of 34 aircraft, which includes nine Airbus 330-300, nine Airbus 330-200, 11 Airbus 320 and five cargo planes. The airline also has 15 next-generation Airbus 350900 aircraft on order.

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) celebrated a recordbreaking year in passenger growth, welcoming more than 18.8-million passengers between January and October 2016—representing a year-over-year growth rate of 9.5 per cent, putting YVR on track to reach 22-million passengers in 2016. This increase is largely recognized in Air Canada’s expansion of its transpacific hub out of YVR, representing approximately 50 per cent of passengers at YVR and serving more than 55 destinations worldwide. “Air Canada has been an incredible partner in increasing our passenger growth by continuously delivering new and exciting destinations for our customers,” said

YVR’s president & CEO Craig Richmond. “I’d like to thank Air Canada for their commitment to growing their transpacific hub out of YVR and in turn supporting our vision to be a sustainable gateway hub between Asia and the Americas. We couldn’t do this without their support.” Between January and October 2016, Air Canada reached a record high for capacity with 10.9-million seats—an increase of 12 per cent over the same period in 2015. The airline’s international sector, which includes the Asia Pacific, Europe and Latin America, led the growth with a 22.6 per cent increase. In 2016, YVR introduced a new five-year airline rates and charges program, ConnectYVR, which provides a highly competi-

tive rate structure and includes rates lower than any other major airport in Canada and competing U.S. airports. This program, alongside YVR’s world-class facility and convenient geographical location, has aided the growth of Air Canada’s successful transpacific hub. Since 2015, Air Canada introduced eight new services to YVR: Osaka, Cancun, San Jose, San Diego, Chicago, Dublin, Brisbane and Delhi. This growth will continue in 2017 with five new destinations scheduled to launch, including Taipei, Nagoya, Frankfurt, London Gatwick and Dallas. For more information on Air Canada flights, visit aircanada. com.

New Autism Access Sticker gives expedited airport processing In yet another first at a Canadian airport, YVR has implemented a program that provides an expedited airport process for families and individuals living with autism. The new YVR Autism Access Sticker is a self-identification tool for individuals living with autism that can be placed on boarding passes. The sticker ensures an expedited airport process through screening and customs, and better communicates the specific needs of passengers to airport employees. The sticker was developed as part of the I CAN Fly program, a collaboration between YVR and the Canucks Autism Network (CAN) that provides air travel resources to support individuals and families living with autism. “One of our top priorities is providing an accessible airport for everyone, and it is through collaboration with partners like the Canucks Autism Network that we are able to identify new opportunities to make our airport as accessible as possible,” said Craig Richmond, president & CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “The launch of the YVR Autism Access Sticker brings us another step towards to

our goal of removing barriers to air travel and creating a positive airport experience for everyone.” The launch of the YVR Autism Access Sticker coincides with the third annual YVR Accessibility Tour. The tour, which is hosted by YVR in partnership with Canucks Autism Network, Air Transat and Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) provides more than 100 individuals and families living with autism the opportunity to experience the air travel process step-by-step to help decrease anxiety while travelling and experience flying in a positive way. “We are thrilled to be a part of this important initiative that will help families living with

Dennis Kirkley, lead chaplain at the multifaith YVR Chapel, presents one of the winners of the Chapel’s World Series competition with her prize.

Once again this year, the Chapel at YVR will host Christmas Drop-In events for employees to visit the Chapel and enjoy some hot apple cider and goodies. Drop-In dates are scheduled from December 5 to 25, 11am-6pm. Once at the Chapel, you can meet the friendly hosts and chaplains and see the facilities that are used to serve the YVR community. A wall map at the Chapel is pinned to show the number of countries that YVR employees originally called home—more than 100. That diversity is also reflected in the Chapel team of volunteers who originate from 20 different countries. It is humbling to hear about the many ways the Chapel and its staff have assisted passengers and employees throughout the year—all in the name of bringing spiritual and emotional well-being to those who are in need.

The I CAN Fly program has opened up a world of possibilities for families living with autism and we are so grateful to YVR for making it happen.” The partnership with the Canucks Autism Network is part of YVR’s community investment program, which in 2016 contributed $1-million into the community through donations and sponsorships in three focus areas; Accessibility, Community and Environment.

Visit the Chapel throughout the year to enter some of the prize-draw contests. Community Hamper Drive makes the holidays happier for families in need YVR and Quest Food Exchange have once again partnered during the holiday season to encourage the airport community to get into the giving spirit by supporting the 6th annual Holiday Hamper Drive. During the Holiday Hamper Drive, which runs from December 1 to 14, participants are asked to fill a hamper with the ingredients needed to provide a complete holiday meal for a family in need. Completed hampers will be collected at the annual wrap-up event on December 14, which will be held from 3pm to 6pm at International Departures Level 3 at the Spirit of Haida Gwaii: The Jade Canoe sculpture. This celebration will feature delicious treats, a festive photo booth and the chance to win prizes for those who participated. Join the greater YVR community in helping to make the holidays a whole lot happier for families in the local community and help towards the goal of filling 600 hampers.

The annual airport community Holiday Hamper Drive wrap-up event will take place on Wednesday, December 14 at the “Spirit of Haida Gwaii: The Jade Canoe” sculpture.

If you are interested in participating, please email community_relations@yvr.ca to have a hamper mailed to you. Following is the list of items required to complete each hamper: • 2 Cans of Soup • 2 Cans of Vegetables • 1 Can of Cranberry Sauce • 2 Packets of Instant Gravy • 2 Boxes of Stuffing • 2 Boxes of Instant Mashed Potatoes • 2 Boxes of Crackers • 1 Box of Cookies • 1 Box of Granola Bars For every hamper filled,

Vancouver Airport Authority will donate a turkey to complete the meal and Quest will donate fresh fruits and vegetables. Throughout the year, Quest Food Exchange works to reduce hunger in local communities by providing affordable and sustainable food options in not-for-profit grocery markets to those who face food security challenges in B.C. As Quest’s official transportation sponsor, YVR helps with the collection and distribution of surplus food and goods, to help deliver these resources where they’re needed most.

YVR recognized as key link between Canada and China Earlier this month at the Canada China Business Council (CCBC) 5th annual Canada China Business Excellence Awards, YVR was awarded the organization’s Outstanding Member Award. This award is presented to a Canadian organization—of any size, in any sector—that above all has implemented successful, high-profile business initiatives or special projects in a two-year period. These ventures must have resulted in commercial success and stand out among competitors as key milestones that further promote connections between the two countries. For those who have followed YVR’s story over the last few years, there are numerous examples of initiatives and special projects for which it has received accolades. For example, new air services that connect YVR’s passengers to China and the Asia Pacific have resulted in direct economic and social benefits for customers and also the region. YVR currently has service from five mainland Chinese carriers and will soon have service from six, with the launch of its new partner Beijing Capital Airlines and its YVR – Qingdao – Hangzhou service on December 30, 2016. Additionally, since 2015 Air Canada has introduced a diverse

range of services to markets around the world from YVR and has played a key part in driving growth in China and beyond. These new services were the direct result of YVR’s Integrated Marketing Strategy, a comprehensive, integrated and partnership approach that aligns all activities in Air Service Development, Marketing, Government Relations, Communications and Community Relations. Launched in 2015 and based on solid analysis, the Integrated Marketing Strategy focuses all of YVR’s assets and resources toward the achievement of its strategic goal of serving 25-million people by 2020. Working with partners, airlines and governments, YVR has also made considerable progress in expanding visa-free transit between Asia and the

Americas, which makes new routes viable. The Government of Canada announced the addition of five Chinese cities—Xiamen, Fuzhou, Chengdu, Shenyang and Harbin—to the list of approved cities under its China Transit Program in 2015, and YVR continues to push for more access under the Transit Without Visa program in order to better connect customers from all over the world. In other initiatives and in order to better understand the needs of its customers and partners, YVR launched Weibo, a China-based blogging account, and received more than one-million views in 2015. It has also worked with airlines to develop an innovative rates and charges program, ConnectYVR, which offers some of the lowest rates in North America. Founded in 1978, the Canada China Business Council, from which YVR received the 2016 Outstanding Member Award, is a bilateral non-profit organization with offices in Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal, Beijing and Shanghai. Through its member services and events, the CCBC provides its member companies with business insight, intelligence, connections and networks that help resolve the inevitable challenges of doing business in another country.

Air Canada’s Altitude Skyriders Kids’ Club makes flying an adventure for children

Air Canada has introduced a brand new kids’ club called Air Canada Altitude Skyriders designed to make flights even more exciting and enjoyable for children between the ages of 2 and 12 years old. Parents register their children for free online at skyriders.aircanada.com, after which the children will receive a kit containing a welcome letter, an exclusive Skyriders luggage tag and a logbook to chart their flights. Every time the child travels, he or she will also earn printable badges online to commemorate

special milestones or achievements. First flights, new regions or destinations explored will be commemorated online. E-mail notifications will be sent once new badges are earned. “The Air Canada Altitude Skyriders club will introduce kids to the exciting world of travel making their journey with Air Canada a memorable experience,” said Benjamin Smith, Air Canada president, passenger airlines. “It’s not about points or rewards, it’s about making their trip as fun as possible and we hope to nurture and encourage

childhood curiosity and create lifelong memories.” Each flight that a Skyrider takes will be an opportunity to collect stickers to fill their logbooks. Additionally, all children on board will receive activity books, headphones, backpacks and puzzles, depending on their destination. Air Canada has a broad range of initiatives in place to meet the needs of families and the hundreds of thousands of children who fly with the airline each year, visit aircanada.com for more information.

China Eastern to connect YVR with Nanjing China Eastern (MU) begins non-stop thrice-weekly service to Nanjing, China from YVR on December 20, 2016. The new service marks the first connection between Canada and Nanjing, a city rich with tourist attractions, education and business opportunities. “Nanjing—what an amazing new destination,” said Craig Richmond, YVR’s president & CEO. “We are very pleased to hear that China Eastern will soon start service to Nanjing, one of China’s most beautiful and dynamic cities. I want to thank China Eastern for their continued support and for further connecting YVR to the world.” Located in the renowned Yangtze River Delta, Nanjing connects China’s ancient past with its modern ambitions. Nanjing is recognized as one of China’s four great ancient capitals, with a 1,000-year history that produced a diverse array of historical monuments. Nanjing is also home to one of the world’s largest inland ports and is a key economic hub, known for its service industries, investment opportunities and high-ranking universities.

“China Eastern Airlines has been operating from Vancouver to China for the past 12 years,” said Xiangying Rong, general manager of China Eastern Airlines Vancouver office. “Vancouver to Nanjing is our third direct flight from Western Canada to China. This provides passengers with more options when flying with China Eastern to China and beyond.” In addition to the diverse business and tourism opportunities this route will create between China and Canada, it will create more than 162 jobs at YVR and throughout British Columbia and will add an additional $9.5-million in Gross Domestic Product, $1.8-million in taxes and $3.2-million in wages. The new service will be operated using an Airbus A330200 on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, arriving at YVR at 8:30am and leaving at 10:30am. The route continues a suc-

cessful relationship that started in 2004 with China Eastern’s launch of daily service between YVR and Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG). In July 2013, China Eastern increased the PVG service to double daily and then launched new direct service to Kunming— one of China’s key connecting hubs—in 2015. The YVR-Nanjing service will also further connect YVR’s passengers with China Eastern’s network, which includes 128 connections in China. New services such as this are made possible as a result of YVR’s new five-year rates and charges program, ConnectYVR, which provides a highly competitive rate structure and includes rates lower than any other major airport in Canada and competing US airports. For the sixth year in a row, Air Transat, Canada’s holiday travel airline, has been ranked number one in North America in the Atmosfair Airline Index, which measures carriers’ fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions reduction. The Airline Index, published by German NGO Atmosfair, helps travellers choose their airlines based on CO2 emission levels. The companies that stand out are those that strive to reduce their emissions, especially by reducing fuel consumption, using modern

fleets adapted to their routes, and maximizing aircraft load factors. Air Transat is the only North American airline on Atmosfair’s global top 20 list, which has been rating the environmental performance of some 200 carriers since 2011. Air Transat is 12th in the world in the long- and mediumhaul categories and 14th in all categories of the annual index. Since 2004, Air Transat has implemented numerous initiatives to improve fuel efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These measures cover

nearly every area of the carrier, and consist of optimizing flight and ground operations, reducing onboard weight, and taking maintenance actions that improve fuel efficiency. Notable improvement initiatives in the past year have included introduction of fuel/GHG tracking software (AVIASO), implementation of an improved engine compressor wash system, and installation of split scimitar winglet systems (SSWS) on several of the carrier’s B737-800 aircraft.

Meeting your Family’s Dental Needs

At Dr. Neil Zastre Inc. we provide a full spectrum of dental services and are committed to providing you with an exceptional level of care & service. Our patients can expect an honest diagnosis and treatment plan that takes all reasonable options into account.

Dr. Neil Zastre

The end of 2016 will soon be here and if you have a dental insurance plan it is important to remember that most plans typically have benefits that expire at year’s end. Most dental insurance plans have a yearly dollar maximum benefit, which does not carry over into the New Year. This annual maximum amount, which varies between insurance companies, is typically reset at the end of year, with unused benefits being forfeited. Employees who participate in company dental insurance plans have a portion of their paycheque deducted each month, which is paid towards their benefits. Even if dental benefits are not claimed during the year, these deductions are not reimbursable. So, if you are paying for dental benefits, why not use them and make sure your dental health is at its best? Every dental plan is different. It is important to know what your insurance will cover before you begin a treatment plan, since it is the patient’s responsibility to pay any portion that is not covered by

the dental insurance plan. If you are not sure about the extent of your plan’s coverage, it is a good idea to ask your dental office to check prior to treatment. Some insurance companies will not provide coverage information to the dental office without authorization from the patient. This can be easily done online or by calling the insurance company to check coverage details. If you have more than one insurance plan, let the dental office know and provide them with this information before treatment. This way, the dental office will bill any portion that your first plan does not pay to your second plan instead of to you. Insurance companies will not notify your dental office if your coverage has changed or terminated so always make sure that your dental office has your current dental insurance plan information. Make the most of your benefits every year by having regular cleanings and check-ups. Regular check-ups allow for early detection of cavities, cracked or leak-

ing fillings, gum disease, oral cancer and much more. Don’t let your hard-earned dental benefits expire, use them before the end of the year and help your smile be at its healthiest. Dr. Amy Nunrha DMD and her dental team would be happy to answer any questions you have about your dental insurance plan and to see you before the end of the year. Just in time for the holiday travel, San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and the San Francisco SPCA has welcomed LiLou, a Juliana-breed pig, to its Wag Brigade team of pets certified by the San Francisco SPCA’s Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) programme. Launched in December

2013, the SFO Wag Brigade brings trained animals to the airport terminals to make passenger travel more enjoyable. The San Francisco SPCA certifies all animals through its AAT programme prior to walking airport terminals. Carefully selected for their temperament and airport suitability, animals wear vests that read “Pet Me!” to encourage interac-

tion with airport guests. LiLou is the first known airport therapy pig in the United States, and promises to surprise and delight guests at SFO with her winning personality, charming costumes, and painted nails. LiLou loves performing tricks for her audience, and also visits several other facilities in San Francisco including senior cen-

tres and hospitals. “We have more than 300 dog, cat and rabbit volunteer teams, but LiLou is the first pig in our program,” said Dr. Jennifer Henley, manager SF SPCA Animal Assisted Therapy. “It’s wonderful to witness the surprise and delight that LiLou brings to people during therapy visits.”

Boeing forecasts increased demand for airline pilots, technicians in Asia-Pacific Boeing’s 2016 Boeing Pilot & Technician Outlook for the Asia-Pacific region is projecting that more than 500,000 new pilots and technicians will be needed to support the expanding demand for new airplane deliveries over the next two decades. The outlook, an industry forecast of aviation personnel demand, anticipates the need for 248,000 new commercial airline pilots and 268,000 new technicians through 2035. “We are continuing to see a

significant need for new pilots and maintenance technicians in the Asia-Pacific region and across the globe,” said Sherry Carbary, vice president, Boeing Flight Services. “This translates into exciting career opportunities for those interested in the aerospace industry. We recognize that to attract a new generation of pilots and technicians, we need to inspire and train them in new ways and that’s why Boeing continues to work closely with airlines, regulators, flight schools

and other industry groups to develop innovative training methods and courseware.” Leading the region in projected demand for new pilots and technicians: • China – 111,000 pilots; 119,000 technicians • Southeast Asia – 62,000 pilots; 67,000 technicians Other parts of the region will also continue to see long-term demand in the tens of thousands of pilots and technicians: • South Asia – 41,000 pilots; 39,000 technicians

• Northeast Asia – 21,000 pilots; 26,000 technicians • Oceania region – 13,000 pilots; 17,000 technicians To support the future growth of training, Boeing has been investing in the development of augmented reality and virtual reality-based training solutions. As with personnel demand, the Asia-Pacific region also leads the demand for new commercial airplane deliveries over the next 20 years. The region comprises 40 per cent of the global need due to fleet growth

in the single-aisle market, driven by low-cost carriers. According to Boeing’s 2016 Current Market Outlook,

15,130 new airplanes, valued at $2.35 trillion, will be needed in the Asia-Pacific region by 2035.

Airbus reaches for new heights with in-flight connectivity

Airbus’ new high-bandwidth connectivity, standard for A320, A330 and A380 jetliners, was developed by a multidisciplinary team and has begun testing on the company’s in-house developmental A330 jetliner.

Airbus is evaluating a new standard high-bandwidth architecture that will provide faster and more wide-reaching connectivity services on-board its modern jetliners. Using in-house A330 testbed aircraft, Airbus became the first in the industry to flight demonstrate such a high-bandwidth connectivity platform—which will enable faster internet, mobile telephone services and support applications for passengers and airlines via high-throughput satellites. Applying high-bandwidth connectivity is an important part of the company’s focus on providing a superior on-board expe-

rience, since it will allow airline customers to choose from satellite technologies such as Ka-band and Ku-band for continuous worldwide connectivity. In-flight connectivity is becoming increasingly important for passengers, who now expect to always be connected, using their own electronic devices to access the internet, exchange with those on the ground and enjoy social media. Airlines also are demanding the need for connectivity solutions to enhance their operational communications, such as with digital cabin logbooks, telemedicine or credit card authentica-

tion to generate ancillary cabin revenues. With the start of testing successfully underway this autumn, Airbus is expected to be the first aircraft manufacturer to offer this standard architecture on its commercial airliners, with service entry for this solution planned for the third quarter of 2017. Airbus’ high-bandwidth connectivity architecture will be available from multiple suppliers for applications on its A320, A330 and A380 jetliners, which supplements the A350 XWB – a “digital native” that entered service with high-bandwidth connectivity capability.

The antenna for Airbus’ new high-bandwidth connectivity architecture is shown on top of the fuselage of Airbus’ A330 test aircraft.

The Government of Canada has selected the Airbus C295W aircraft for its Fixed-Wing Search and Rescue Program (FWSAR). As part of the FWSAR program, the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) will receive 16 C295Ws modified for Search and Rescue (SAR). The new planes are meant to replace the nearly 50-year-old CC-115 Buffalos and older model CC-130 Hercules transports currently assigned to search-andrescue duties by the RCAF. The contract will also include in-service support, provided through a joint venture between Airbus Defence and Space and PAL Aerospace. “We are acutely conscious of the importance of search and

rescue in Canada’s vast and challenging territory and we are honoured to have been selected to provide the aircraft and service to ensure that the role is carried out effectively,” said Simon Jacques, head of Airbus Defence and Space in Canada. The C295W features substantial Canadian content. Every C295 is powered by Pratt & Whitney Canada engines; pilots and technicians will be trained at a new facility developed by CAE in Comox, B.C.; and the electrooptical systems for FWSAR will be provided by L3 Wescam of Burlington, Ontario. In-service support for the life of the program will be provided by AirPro, a joint venture between Airbus Defence

and Space and PAL Aerospace of St John’s, Newfoundland. In-service support will be conducted by Canadians in Canada. Jacques added: “About 20 per cent of the aircraft is already Canadian, meaning that it already serves as a global ambassador for the skills, innovation and expertise of Canadians,” said Jacques. “Now it will get to serve them directly.” Canada’s C295Ws will be delivered starting three years after contract award. In service, they will join five Airbus CC-150 aircraft used in the air-to-air refuelling, transport and VIP travel roles. When the contract is finalized, 185 C295s will have been ordered by 25 countries.

The City of Richmond has become the first municipality to receive a Platinum Rating from E3 Fleet, a national program that recognizes excellence in fleet management and environmental performance. “An E3 Fleet Platinum Rating is the highest mark of achievement for fleet management in Canada,” said Colin Hansen, chair of the Fraser Basin Council, a charitable non-profit organization that founded and managed the E3 Fleet Program over the last 10 years. “The City of Richmond has shown exceptional leadership by earning this rating, thanks to an unwavering commitment to making its entire fleet cleaner and more efficient.” The Green Fleet Action Plan is a component of Richmond’s Corporate Energy and Emissions Program that addresses all greenhouse gas emissions from City operations. To optimize the performance of its fleet, the City of Richmond Fleet Operations Department took several key steps: adopted a green fleet plan; implemented better tracking and analysis of fleet data, including data on fuel use; “right-sized” the fleet in all vehicle classes (light, medium and heavy duty) by choosing more efficient vehicles suited to the task; trained staff on fuel management and fuel-efficient driving practices; and replaced vehicles when due for replacement, to minimize repair costs and fuel use.

The department has installed 10 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations across Richmond. It is also now retrofitting some vehicles with solar panels; supporting an interactive anti-idling campaign; piloting GPS use to manage fuel consumption; and supporting and using car-sharing services. Richmond’s Fleet Operations Department maintains more than 595 vehicles and specialized pieces of equipment in servicing a geographic area of 129 square kilometres and population of more than 213,000 residents. E3 Fleet is a Canada-wide program designed to assist trucking, utility, urban delivery, courier, government and other fleets improve their fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, manage expenses and incorporate new technologies. The first such program of its kind, E3 Fleet offers organizations the opportunity for a comprehensive review of their fleets, as well as an opportunity to receive Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum ratings for fleet performance. The not-for-profit Fraser Basin Council founded the E3 Fleet program in 2006 and managed it up to late 2016. Management responsibility for E3 Fleet was recently transferred to the not-for-profit Richmond Sustainability Initiatives (RSI), which manages the Fleet Challenge program and a range of sustainable fleet transportation programs. Surprising technology behind the future of autonomous driving

As autonomous driving (AD) technology brings new advances and features to mobility, important questions inevitably arise. For example, how will drivers come to trust their autonomous vehicles? How will vehicles communicate with drivers and alert them to the presence of other vehicles on the road? And, what actions will vehicles take after identifying objects, signs and other road infrastructure such as painted lanes? Takashi Sunda, deputy general manager of the Autonomous Drive Technology Development Department at Nissan, and his team of engineers have developed answers to these and other questions through their work on technology that enables communication between drivers and cars. In a world of ubiquitous personal devices, we are already interacting with this sort of technology— smartphone touchscreen, on a computer, and a home coffee machine. It’s already a key technology in cars, where it plays a critical role in instrument panels, navigation touchscreens and parking Solution for December 2016 Crossword.

assistance features. Sunda’s team is working on a wide range of new technologies that focus on how to better communicate and establish trust between drivers and their cars. Adding to the complexity, researchers must also factor in the many differences in gender, age, experience, terrain, culture — and even different countries’ rules of the road. Finding the Right Balance Once vehicles begin collecting more information in support of new AD features, the systems will need to be able to recognize and react to a range of situations. What’s more, the technology will also need to quickly communicate all information back to the driver in an easy-to-grasp manner. Drivers will need to know what information the car is collecting and — importantly — what the vehicle is going to do with that data to ensure a safe and comfortable ride. Consider a scenario in which you are changing lanes and are suddenly approached by another car in an adjacent lane: How will your vehicle convey important information about the approaching car quickly, and what will it do in response? Or, think about a city corner, when a lone pedestrian suddenly steps off the curb and starts walking across the street: What will your car need to tell you? In these situations, you need to inform — but not overwhelm — users.

Auto Talk

Takashi Sunda, deputy general manager of the Autonomous Drive Technology Development Department at Nissan.

Clearly, autonomous driving will change the relationship between drivers and their cars, but it’s a challenge in which Sunda has experience. Before joining Nissan 16 years ago, he worked on developing aircraft-human machine interfaces. When working on those airplanes, he had the benefit of trained pilots who could not only operate the aircraft, but who offered opinions on design. In the end, the big prize for Sunda’s team is a chance to reinvent the future of driving. Sunda said as more autonomous features are available, it will have a revolutionary impact on the way people interact with their cars. “The change has already begun,” he said. “We are altering the relationship between drivers and their cars — and the experience of driving as a whole.”
