The Musqueam Indian Band - YVR Airport Sustainability & Friendship Agreement is based on the four pillars of Sustainability—Social, Economic, Environment and Governance. The Agreement recognizes the evolving nature of the relationship between YVR and Musqueam through education, employment, revenue sharing, an engagement protocol for long-term development and support of operations. “This is an incredible day as we mark the evolution of our relationship with the Musqueam people,” said Craig Richmond, president & CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “We are proud to look ahead to a future where we continue to learn and grow together for the economic and social benefit of the region.

Being able to celebrate this new and exciting way forward with our friends is not only good for our business, it is the right way for YVR to move forward in the community we serve.” Some of the details of the Agreement include a path of education to employment with several scholarships and new jobs, one per cent of annual revenue from YVR, identification and protection of archeological resources and support for ongoing operations and long-term development at the airport. YVR and Musqueam are in the same community on land that is Musqueam traditional territory. Musqueam have historically played an integral role in many areas of YVR’s business and operations, from noise management and environmental advisory to development planning and cultural engagement. Air Canada introduces new non-stop services from YVR Non-stop to Taipei provides connections to popular destinations in Asia

The inaugural flight of Air Canada’s new route between YVR and Taipei’s Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) arrived at YVR last month. The non-stop year-round service will arrive at YVR daily and is timed strategically to connect travellers to major destinations within Canada and North America. “Air Canada continues to build their preferred transpacific hub at YVR and we are pleased they decided to launch this Taipei route as a daily, yearround service on the exceptional Dreamliner aircraft,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “This new Air Canada route will provide passengers with added access to both business and tourism opportunities in Taipei as well as convenient connections

to multiple destinations throughout Asia.” This route uses the Air Canada’s 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, offering 30 International Business Class lie-flat pod suites, 21 Premium Economy and 247 Economy Class seats with upgraded in-flight entertainment. This new service benefits the local economy by creating 260 jobs at the airport and at hotels, restaurants, shops and tourist attractions. In addition, the service contributes $9.4-million in wages, $5.3-million in taxes and $15-million to B.C.’s GDP. “Air Canada is very pleased to return to Taipei, an important and significant economic centre, as part of our ongoing global expansion,” said Benjamin Smith, president, passenger airlines at Air Canada. “Our Taipei flights are operated

with our state-of-the-art Boeing 787 Dreamliners featuring our industry-leading international services. The strategic addition of these daily year-round flights strengthens our YVR transpacific hub [and], which combined with our extensive North American network, provides convenient options and a competitive elapsed travel time between North America and Taiwan.” Taipei is a global city and part of a major high-tech industrial area. Taoyuan International Airport, which is located approximately 40 kilometres west of Taipei, served more than 42-million passengers in 2016. It was recognized with a third-place win in this passenger category in the World’s Best Airport at the Skytrax World Airport Awards in 2016.

Seasonal daily service to Boston

Last month, YVR welcomed the inaugural flight of Air Canada’s new route between YVR and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS). The non-stop seasonal service will arrive at YVR daily and operate until September 4, 2017. This service is the only non-stop connection between Vancouver and Boston and is timed strategically to connect travellers with other Asian and South Pacific flights out of YVR. “We are excited that Air Canada is now offering non-stop service to one of our most underserved markets,” said Craig Richmond, president & CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “Air Canada’s new daily flight from YVR to Boston will connect

travellers from British Columbia to the vital Northeastern business hub and a region rich in history and culture.” Boston is the largest city in Massachusetts and will provide British Columbians with great opportunities for leisure and business travel. For those passengers travelling from Boston, this flight is conveniently timed to facilitate easy access to Vancouver’s seaport for access to cruise ships leaving Vancouver. “We are delighted to launch the only non-stop flights from Vancouver to Boston,” said Benjamin Smith, president – passenger airlines at Air Canada. “The addition of these convenient non-stop flights helps fur-

ther strengthen our YVR transPacific hub by linking Greater Boston, one of the most populous metropolitan area in the U.S. to our extensive network at YVR which offers convenient connections throughout BC. Additionally, our BostonVancouver flights connect easily to and from our Sydney and Brisbane, Australia daily flights, with competitive elapsed travel times.” The YVR-BOS route uses an Air Canada Airbus 319 aircraft with seat capacity for 120 passengers. This new service benefits the British Columbia economy with new jobs and contributes $1.5-million to the province’s gross domestic product.

Hainan Airlines unveils new uniforms in Paris

The striking collar on Hainan Airlines Cheongsam uniform is overlaid with a pattern of clouds.

THE FLIGHT IS DIRECT

Hainan Airlines fifth-generation uniforms were recently showcased at the 2017 Laurence Xu Haute Couture Show in Paris, an event highlighting the work of the world-renowned fashion designer. Hainan’s women’s uniforms repurpose the Cheongsam, a stylish traditional Chinese dress usually worn on more formal occasions, with popular contemporary fashion elements. The collar is overlaid with a pattern of clouds and the lower hem with a pattern alternating sea and mountains that contrasts with the collar’s clouds and sky—drawing a comparison between the take-off of a Hainan aircraft and the roc, a mythical bird denoting strength, as it lifts into flight. Meanwhile, the apron is

designed as a tulip-shaped dress to emphasize elegance, aesthetics and pra cticality. The new attire adds a new twist to the previous generations’ iconic elements—the Oriental art-inspired patterns and greycolour theme that have always been an essential part of the airline’s uniforms. Hainan’s fourth-generation

uniforms have been in use for seven years starting from 2010. Two years ago, the airline opened a discussion with Xu that led ultimately to the creation of the new uniforms. During the design process, Xu and Hainan Airlines went through more than 1,000 design blueprints and tried more than 100 samples of garments and accessories before deciding

on the final design. Founded in 1993, Hainan Airlines entered into a code-share agreement with WestJet in 2016, building on an interline agreement that had been in place since 2013. The code-share allows Hainan to place its HU code on WestJet-operated flights to and from Vancouver, as well as several other Canadian cities.

Qantas reveals names of its Dreamliner fleet Qantas customers will take to the skies on Waltzing Matilda, Boomerang and Quokka, some of the names chosen for the airline’s new fleet of eight Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. More than 60,000 suggestions were put forward and 45,000 votes cast in selecting the names of the Dreamliners that will been flown on the airline’s long-haul routes. Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said the public response to the challenge of naming the aircraft after things that captured the spirit of Australia was fantastic. “We had so many worthwhile entries, we could have probably renamed our entire fleet of 208 aircraft,” said Joyce. The clear favourites ranged from landmarks to native animals, literature and Indigenous heritage. “We know people get a real sense of home when they see the flying kangaroo at airports

around the world, and hopefully they’ll enjoy seeing these uniquely Australian names as well,” said Joyce. The final names (in no particular order). • Great Barrier Reef • Boomerang • Skippy • Uluru (also known as Ayers Rock)

• Waltzing Matilda • Great Southern Land • Quokka • Dreamtime The names will be painted beneath the cockpit window on each Qantas Dreamliner aircraft. The sequencing of names will be revealed as the aircraft are delivered, with the first to arrive in October this year.

The jet that redefined the aviation era Earlier this year, United Airlines announced that it will retire its fleet of venerable Boeing 747-400 aircraft by the end of 2017. United is one of the last major U.S. airlines to fly the original jumbo jet, an aircraft so iconic that it can be immediately identified by most people. According to United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz, one of the reasons the 747 is on its way to “becoming obsolete,” is due to maintenance issues; no one is making new parts for this particular aircraft any more. British Airways, once the world’s largest operator of 747400s, has also begun retiring its fleet in favour of more fuel-efficient planes. The 747 was the result of the work of some 50,000 Boeing people. Called “The Incredibles,” these were the construction workers, mechanics, engineers, secretaries and administrators

who made aviation history by building the 747 in less than 16 months during the late 1960s. The incentive for creating the giant 747 came from reductions in airfares, a surge in air-passenger traffic and increasingly crowded skies. The 747’s final design was offered in three configurations: all passenger, all cargo and a convertible passenger/freighter model. The fuselage of the original 747 was 68.5 metres long; the tail as tall as a six-storey building. Pressurized, it carried a ton of air. The cargo hold had room for 3,400 pieces of baggage and could be unloaded in seven minutes. The total wing area was larger than a basketball court. Yet, the entire global navigation system weighed less than a modern laptop computer. Pilots prepared for the 747 at a Boeing training school. The experience of taxiing such a large plane

was acquired in a contraption called Waddell’s Wagon, named after Jack Waddell, the company’s chief test pilot. The pilot sat in a mock-up of the 747’s flight deck built atop three-storey-high stilts on a moving truck. The pilot learned how to maneuver from such a height by directing the truck driver below him by radio. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration later modified two 747-100s into Shuttle Carrier Aircraft. The 747-400 rolled out in 1988. Its wingspan is 64 metres, with 1.8-metre-high winglets on the wingtips. The 747-400 was also produced as a freighter, a combination freighter and passenger model and as a special domestic version, without the winglets, for shorter range flights. The 747 remained the largest passenger airliner in service until the Airbus A380 began airline service in 2007.

Richmond’s largest restaurant deck close to launch date

Summit Customs Brokers CUSTOMS & Trade Consultants BROKERS

Last year, Pier 73 Restaurant—yes, it really is a pier—began construction of a 5,574-square-metre deck, which when completed will have the capacity for up to 300 guests. A Richmond landmark for years, Pier 73 is suspended above the Fraser River beside the Pacific Gateway Hotel—a five-minute drive from YVR. When completed, the clever design and architecture of the signature wraparound waterfront deck, offering views of the North Shore Mountains and incoming planes, will allow for year-round use. The centre roof section will use metal with a transparent material section extending further out and an open-beam section for dining out on sunny days.

A fall completion of the Pier 73 renovation project is expected, with a special ‘Win Dinner for a Year’ lottery promotion to be offered as part of the celebration. The restaurant will also have drawings and blueprints of the intricate construction details on display. Now in its 44th year of operation, Pier 73 has been a dining and after-work favourite of YVR employees and Richmond visitors alike. The hotel and restaurant staff are looking forward to welcoming guests to the new facilities with announcement dates to be made soon. Pier 73 Restaurant is located at Pacific Gateway Hotel, 3500 Cessna Drive, Richmond.

Transport Agreements

Canada and Mexico sign transport agreements

Canada’s Minister of Transport, the Honourable Marc Garneau, recently signed two agreements with Mexico to reinforce the important trade and transportation links between the two countries. Minister Garneau and Secretary Ruiz Esparza, Mexico’s Secretary of Communications and Transport signed amendments to the Canada-Mexico Air Transport Agreement, an important milestone in the ratification of the amended agreement, reached in 2016. Canada and Mexico already enjoy a liberal air transport relationship, allowing any number

of airlines from both countries to offer services between any Canadian and Mexican cities. The amended agreement builds on that by removing administrative requirements to make it easier for airlines to react quickly to market pricing conditions. Canadian and Mexican airlines will also be able to serve third countries when operating between Canada and Mexico, with the prior approval of both governments. Minister Garneau and Secretary Esparza also signed an agreement to allow Canada and Mexico to work together to identify opportunities to fly drones

safely. This partnership allows Canada to showcase its leadership on drone regulations and to exchange best practices with Mexico. Canada and Mexico are each other’s third largest trading partner. Since the beginning of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1994, bilateral trade between Canada and Mexico has more than quadrupled reaching more than $40-billion in 2016. Nearly two-million Canadians travel to Mexico every year for both business and pleasure.

Canada recently modernized and expanded its air transport agreement with Thailand to allow any number of Canadian and Thai airlines to serve any city in Canada and Thailand. In 2016, Thailand was Canada’s 29th largest air travel market. The new agreement, which replaces the existing 1989 agreement, establishes an allowance of 21 flights per week for each country. It also enhances rights that allow airlines to extend Canada-Thailand services to third countries (otherwise known as fifth freedom rights) on up to

seven of the 21 weekly flights. “The Government of Canada is committed to helping the Canadian air industry increase its access to international markets,” said the Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport. “An expanded agreement with a growing international air transport market like Thailand not only benefits our air sector, but also Canadian businesses, shippers and travellers who will now have more options.” In addition, the new agreement enhances previously existing code-share rights (when an

air carrier sells seats on a flight operated by another carrier) and modernizes aviation safety and ‎security articles as well as doing business provisions. The new agreement was reached under Canada’s Blue Sky Policy, which encourages long-term, sustainable competition and the development of international air services. Pending the completion of formal ratification procedures, the agreement is being applied on an administrative basis to allow carriers to begin planning new air services immediately.

Diners relive the Golden Era of flight

Travel Talk

The Pan Am Experience restaurant includes a check-in desk and boarding pass.

From its birth in 1927 until its collapse in 1991, Pan American World Airways (commonly known as ‘Pan Am’) flew routes that spanned six continents and more than 80 countries. During what has now been dubbed as the Golden Era of travel, when passengers dressed to the nines and were offered freshly carved roast beef at their seats, flying on Pan Am was considered a special experience. Travellers to Los Angeles can now relive the Pan Am Experience, at an aviationthemed film company’s restaurant that is designed as an exact interior replica of a Pan Am Boeing 747. The Pan Am Experience begins at the check-in desk, where a customer service agent provides each diner with a 1970s-style board pass, ticket jacket and carry-on tags. Once

inside the ‘aircraft’, there is an opportunity to peruse vintage Pan Am memorabilia including authentic uniforms, airline seats, handbags and artwork. The restaurant is divided into First Class, Main Deck and Clipper Class cabins, with an upper deck dining room accessible via a spiral staircase. The cabin interiors have all been restored to Pan Am’s original cabin décor and branding

elements. Staff wear authentic uniforms from the 1970s era and each traytable is set with a white tablecloth and Pan Am-branded silverware and napkins. In classic Pan Am style, ‘passengers’ are served a gourmet five-course meal, starting with a glass of champagne and appetizers. The main course of Chateaubriand is carved seat-side from a trolley and

accompanied with fresh vegetables and roasted potatoes. A selection of fruit, cheese and biscuits and dessert cart follow. Tea and coffee completes the meal. No airline has left such a

lasting impression of such an era than Pan Am. For those who remember, flight attendants were known as stewardesses, carry-on luggage was not yet invented, and smoking was permitted on flights!

The Pan Am Experience by Air Hollywood is located at 13240 Weidner Street, Los Angeles, Calif. For information on flights from YVR to Los Angeles, visit yvr.ca.

Lufthansa A350 rolls out the red carpet at Munich Airport

AT YVR HERE’S TO YOU CANADA! YVR is celebrating Canada’s 150th in July with store specials, live music and prizes. #CAN150YVR

yvr.ca

Lufthansa took delivery of its first A350 aircraft in December 2016. The A350 is the first Airbus aircraft with both fuselage and wing structures made primarily of carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer.

It’s Germany’s biggest outdoor advertising space: the western façade of Terminal 2 at Munich Airport and since May 1, 2017, a Lufthansa A350 has been

pictured on a giant 111-metre long poster. The poster is particularly eye-catching—a 134-metre long and 3-metre wide red carpet runs

from the façade to the plaza of the Munich Airport Center. Arriving passengers can walk along the red carpet until the end of September 2017.

Lufthansa’s SmartDepart provides quick onward travel from Munich Lufthansa, which offers flights from YVR to Munich, Germany, is now offering a SmartDepart service to passengers flying on from Munich to certain cities in Germany. SmartDepart is a free service available to all Lufthansa passengers in Terminal 2, which allows even quicker connections. Every day, from 6am to 8:30am and from 4pm to 6:30pm, the SmartDepart service will

offer a separate security check— SmartDepart Fast Lane—to all Lufthansa passengers travelling with a single piece of luggage from Munich to Dusseldorf, Berlin/ Tegel, Frankfurt and Hamburg. Departure gates are in the middle of Terminal 2 and only a short walk from the security check, thus decreasing the time it takes to board the aircraft. Once at the destination, the arrival gates are also close to the exit.

“Saving valuable time and getting to the flight without stress is important to our customers,” said Wilken Bormann, CEO Hub Munich. “That’s why we have optimized the travel steps to enable significant time savings. This makes Terminal 2 a pioneer when it comes to speed.” Lufthansa plans to expand its SmartDepart service once the Munich testing phase is completed.

Boeing partners with China Airlines to increase maintenance, engineering, training capabilities

In May 2016, Boeing and China Airlines celebrated the delivery of the world’s first co-branded 777 aircraft.

Aerospace manufacturer Boeing has signed an agreement with China Airlines to develop the airline’s capabilities to serve the growing maintenance, repair and overhaul market in Asia. It is anticipated that Boeing’s technical support and maintenance training to China Airlines will enhance the airline’s ability to service Boeing products. In addition, Boeing intends to work closely with China Airlines to qualify it as an approved Boeing supplier, which will allow the airline to bid for work on Boeing’s wide-ranging products and services. With a growing number of airlines in the Asia-Pacific region selecting Boeing airplanes, China

Airlines will have the opportunity to become a qualified Boeing Global Fleet Care service provider in Asia. In addition, Boeing aims to aid China Airlines’ qualification as a potential Boeing Converted Freighter (BCF) conversion site, as well as explore training opportunities to develop the airline’s capability as an airframe modification supplier for Boeing’s airplanes. “China Airlines has been a very important partner to Boeing for more than five decades and this mutually beneficial collaboration will further enhance their capabilities in maintenance and engineering,” said Ihssane Mounir,

CUSTOMER APPRECIATION SALE Aug 18, 19 & 20

senior vice president, sales and marketing, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “This relationship will allow China Airlines to develop and deliver worldclass maintenance service to global airline customers, while also adding value to Boeing’s network of global supplier partners.” With nearly 40 per cent of the future market demand for commercial airplanes coming from the Asia-Pacific region, it is anticipated that the collaboration with China Airlines in Boeing’s largest market will provide flexibility for global airline customers, while also contributing to Taiwan’s growing commercial aviation industry.

Travel Talk New Zealand’s Great Barrier Island designated an International Dark Sky Sanctuary

|

Great Barrier Island, off the coast of Auckland, has become the first island named as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary. Photo: Mark Russell

Located 100 kilometres north-east of central Auckland, Great Barrier Island’s night skies will now be protected for present and future generations. Great Barrier Island becomes the first island and only the third place in the world to achieve this status. The other two sanctuaries are in New Mexico (US) and Chile. A Dark Sky Sanctuary is public or private land that has an exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights and a nocturnal environment that is protected for its scientific, natural or educational value, cultural heritage and/or public enjoyment.

With much of Great Barrier Island off the grid, light pollution is minimized on the island, allowing for great viewing of the spectacular night sky. The island is accessible by air from Auckland, Coromandel, Northland, Tauranga and Hamilton, or by ferry from Auckland’s downtown waterfront. Great Barrier Island joins the Aoraki Mackenzie in the central South Island as a leading New Zealand astro-tourism destination. Aoraki Mackenzie is an International Dark Sky Reserve and must-do tourism experience for international visitors to New Zealand.

Now with two recognized dark sky areas, New Zealand has become a bucket list destination for astronomers and lovers of the night sky. Great Barrier Island, also known by its Māori name of Aotea, has a population of just over 900 people. It is a popular destination for diving, fishing, surfing, kayaking, mountain biking, hiking and camping. Accommodation options range from tent sites to luxury eco lodges. Air New Zealand offers flights from YVR to Auckland, New Zealand. For more information, visit airnewzealand.ca.

On the weekend of August 11-13, the skies over Abbotsford will roar with an incredible lineup of jet demonstrations of some of the most sophisticated fighter aircraft in western service. Hornets, Vipers, Rhinos and Lightnings will all be screaming through the skies. The iconic

Canadian Snowbirds will also be on hand to demonstrate their unique brand of precision flying and aerial choreography. Designated Canada’s National Airshow, this annual festival provides spectators an opportunity to watch one of the finest aerobatic performances.

The three-day event takes place at the Abbotsford International Airport, approximately 40 kilometres east of the Port Mann Bridge just off the Trans-Canada Highway. Visit abbotsfordairshow.com for more information or to purchase tickets.

Richmond Museum’s new exhibit explores what makes the community unique. Photo: courtesy City of Richmond.

The Richmond Museum’s new exhibition, Our Journeys Here, celebrates Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation by delving into what it means to be Canadian in 2017. Our Journeys Here first explores Canada’s history based on the experiences of those who were already here, the First Nations Peoples, who journeyed seasonally to Richmond from time immemorial. The exhibit then moves to the experiences of everyone who has immigrated here more recently, including farmers enticed from Europe, Chinese labourers who paid head taxes, South Asians expelled on the Komagatu Maru, and families looking for a good life for their children. Looking forward, the museum aims to start a year-long conversation about what it means to be Canadian today. What makes the community unique? How is its history relevant and what is its influence today? The exhibit includes interactive exhibits that explore Canadian immigration roots, new or old. A Canadian

Citizenship Game allows visitors to try their hand answering test questions. A Canadian-themed fun photo-op exhibit allows the posting of “moose” photos on social media. Younger visitors can take part in a variety of other activities in the Discovery Area, from dressing up in hockey jerseys and other “Canadian clothes,” to creating and mailing postcards to family in the “home country” and building train tracks across the country that link British Columbia to the rest of Canada. The exhibit supports the Richmond Museum’s goal of contributing to a broader understanding of the concept of community in an accessible everyday setting that visitors can enjoy and understand. Our Journeys Here will run to summer 2018 at the Richmond Museum, 7700 Minoru Gate (located in the Richmond Cultural Centre). Hours are 9am to 9:30pm weekdays and 10am to 5pm weekends. For more information about the Richmond Museum, visit richmondmuseum.ca.

The City of Richmond has been designated as a World Leisure Community of Excellence for 2017 by the World Leisure Organization (WLO). The WLO is a world-wide, nongovernmental association dedicated to discovering and fostering conditions that permit leisure activities to serve as a force for human growth, development and well-being. In its announcement, the WLO stated, “the City of Richmond receives this award for its substantive contributions as a community to promoting leisure as a means to enhance the human condition. Richmond serves as an exemplar of how broad-based citizen involvement can effectively promote leisure as integral to the social, cultural, economic, and sustainable environmental development of the community.” The contribution of Richmond’s many partners in the delivery of community services was particularly recognized in the awarding of the designation. “Richmond City Council understands that to be a healthy, vibrant and sustainable city, we must nurture opportunities

for recreation and for our rich arts and cultural communities,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “Richmond also provides a variety of outdoor green space, celebrates our unique heritage and waterfront roots, and provides meaningful opportunities for volunteerism and engagement. We are proud to be recognized by the World Leisure Organization for our commitment to supporting leisure opportunities for our citizens and enhancing overall community livability and well-being for Richmond residents.” The title World Leisure Community of Excellence is given to communities that have successfully used leisure in all its forms to reinvent themselves and to improve the economic, social and cultural lives of their citizens and have made substantive contributions consistent with advancing the mission of WLO. In so doing, WLO brings global attention to the excellence communities have achieved through working together with their citizens and many community partners to promote leisure to enhance the human condition.
