Earlier this month, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) celebrated the inaugural flights of two new, non-stop seasonal services: Air Canada’s daily service to Frankfurt, Germany; and Air Canada Rouge’s three-times weekly service to Nagoya, Japan. These new routes will connect YVR’s passengers with two key hub cities, with the YVR – Nagoya route being the only one of its kind in Canada. “I would like to thank Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge for supporting YVR and providing our passengers with such exciting travel options,” said Craig Richmond, president & CEO of Vancouver Airport Authority. “Nagoya is an incredible city that boasts Japan’s largest port, a strong manufacturing industry and

great tourist destinations. And Air Canada’s new service to Frankfurt opens many opportunities for passengers and businesses to connect with a premier European hub city, which opens up travel into Europe and beyond.” These new services are timed to connect travellers from both destinations to major destinations within Canada and North America. Both services will bring
economic benefits to the local communities. The Nagoya service will create 160 new jobs and contribute $8.3-million to B.C.’s GDP; the Frankfurt service will create 149 new jobs and contribute $8.8-million to B.C.’s GDP. “[This] is an exciting day, as we launch two new international flights from YVR this summer as part of our ongoing strategic, global expansion,” said Benjamin Smith,
president, passenger airlines at Air Canada. “We’re pleased to welcome onboard our local customers to Nagoya and to Frankfurt and as well as customers from Japan, Germany and beyond, who are visiting Vancouver and beautiful B.C. this summer. Our new non-stop flights to Frankfurt onboard Air Canada’s 787 Dreamliners and to Nagoya onboard Air Canada Rouge B767-300ER aircraft support our YVR hub,
which connects customers flying from B.C., Western Canada and the US to Asia, Europe and beyond.” New services such as these are made possible thanks to YVR’s new five-year rates and charges program, ConnectYVR. The program provides a highly competitive rate structure and includes rates lower than any other major airport in Canada and competing US airports.
YVR completes largest Apron LED lighting system install in Canada YVR continues to be a leader in airport sustainability with the installation of a new state-of-the-art LED lighting system to its airfield, leveraging incentives from BC Hydro. The new lighting system by Musco Lighting significantly reduces YVR’s power consumption, expands lighting coverage and increases safety for pilots, air traffic controllers and ground crews. This marks the first time an airport in North America is using an adaptive dimming system based upon gate usage.

Last month, YVR celebrated the inaugural flight of Air Canada’s new route between YVR and Denver International Airport (DEN). This new nonstop, year-round service launched with double-daily flights timed to connect conveniently with Air Canada’s domestic and international schedule at YVR. “This new service to Denver further showcases Air Canada’s transborder growth at YVR, while adding additional travel options
for our passengers,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “The fact that Air Canada is starting this service with two flights a day is impressive and shows their confidence in the route and the passenger demand in both markets.” This new service benefits the local economy by creating 239 jobs at the airport and at hotels, restaurants, shops and tourist attractions. Apron Lighting Continued from page 1 “Our primary objective is to operate and maintain a safe, secure and sustainable airport,” said Don Ehrenholz, vice president, engineering, Vancouver Airport Authority. “The new apron lighting system significantly reduces YVR’s energy consumption, while streamlining operations and improving safety with improved coverage, reduced glare and increased lighting levels. It’s a win-win situation. We will continue to work collaboratively to find innovative ways to reduce energy consumption as we strive for environmental excellence.” The LED lighting, which was retrofitted onto YVR’s existing structures, gives a more uniform distribution and features patented glare-control technology that allows high-quality light only where needed and preserves darkness where light is not
intended. This improves operational efficiency by eliminating glare. Musco’s LED solution is designed as a complete system with lighting and structural components, such as custom support brackets and electrical components, engineered to work together. The system was factory aimed, wired and tested. This ensures better performance, longterm reliability and trouble-free operation at YVR. The system is backed by a long-term warranty that covers parts and labour, guaranteeing no additional costs for the next 10 years. “Every lighting project is unique,” said Jeff Rogers, vice president of Musco Lighting. “Lighting airports brings a number of additional considerations and at an airport with the size and scope of YVR, the challenges are even more extensive. So, this has
YVR-Denver Continued from page 1 been a milestone project and the team at YVR has been outstanding to work with. When you see the quality of light, the uniform distribution, the virtual elimination of glare and the cut-off preserving darkness around YVR, it’s really impressive.” The adaptive new apron lighting system allows lighting levels to increase and decrease, based on the gate schedule, saving power when not in use. It is expected to save 715,000 kilowatt-hours per year, which is the equivalent of powering 72 residential households per year. BC Hydro provided incentives for the project through its Industrial Energy Manager program in which YVR has participated for more than 10 years. “We applaud YVR for their continuous commitment to demonstrating leadership in strategic energy management through innovative and collaborative
projects and partnerships, like our Industrial Energy Manager program,” said Janet Fraser, senior vice president of corporate affairs at BC Hydro. “We are pleased that the incentives we provided have contributed to a successful project that will enable YVR to save energy, operate efficiently and increase safety at its facility.” YVR’s 2015 to 2019 Environmental Management Plan has four strategic priorities with corresponding goals, targets and baselines that influence the sustainable growth and development of YVR. These strategic priorities aim to: reduce greenhouse gas emissions; reduce waste; reduce potable water consumption; and improve ecosystem health. As part of this plan, YVR developed a long-term energy strategy that aims to reduce energy consumption and invest in alternative energy solutions.
In addition, the service contributes $13.9-million to B.C.’s GDP. The YVR-Denver route will be serviced by Air Canada Express 75-seat, Wi-Fi-equipped Bombardier CRJ-705 aircraft, offering business and economy seating and on-demand touch screen entertainment. “Air Canada is delighted to launch our year-round, nonstop flights between YVR and Denver as part of our ongoing strategic expansion at YVR,” said Benjamin Smith, president, passenger airlines at Air Canada. “Denver is one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S., and there are many affinities for both business and leisure between both regions. Additionally, customers travelling from the Denver area can connect easily and seamlessly at our YVR trans-Pacific hub to our extensive domestic and international network, espe-

cially to Asia.” Colorado’s capital city, Denver is known for its unique position at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in a metropolitan area that offers a diverse travel destination. Denver is popularly believed to see 300 days of sunshine in a year, making it an attractive option for travellers who want to explore the outdoor playground. In addition to the new Denver service, Air Canada introduced cross-border service to Dallas, Texas in February and increased service to Los Angeles and San Jose, California to six- and threetimes daily, respectively, both on May 1, 2017. Air Canada will also launch the following international routes out of YVR this year: Taipei, Taiwan; London Gatwick; and Melbourne, Australia.

National AccessAbility Week promotes an inclusive Canada Last month, the Government of Canada announced May 28 – June 3 as National AccessAbility Week to promote and celebrate inclusion and accessibility in Canadian communities. In addition, the week was aimed at changing the way Canadians think, talk and act about barriers to participation and accessibility at the outset, not as an afterthought. Vancouver Airport Authority is committed to ensuring the airport is accessible for every traveller and engages various accessibility partners to ensure the airport’s facilities meet passengers’ needs. From having all counters be height adjusted throughout the terminal to building a post-security animal relief area, universal access is a critical component of YVR. Along with YVR’s accessible facilities, the airport actively supports and works with community partners to ensure each customer has a positive experience at the airport. A notable example is the I CAN Fly program, a collaboration with the Canucks Autism Network (CAN) that provides

air travel resources to support individuals and families living with autism. Included in the I Can Fly program is an Autism Access Sticker, which offers an expedited airport process through screening and customs and helps to communicate better the specific needs of passengers to airport
employees. YVR was the first airport in Canada to implement a sticker program to support families and individuals living with autism. For more information about accessibility at YVR and the I Can Fly program, visit YVR.ca/ accessibility.

The much-anticipated opening of Pajo’s in YVR’s International Terminal, presecurity, occurred earlier this month. The Pajo’s story began in 1985, starting with just a stand in Steveston’s Wharf and can now be found in five locations in B.C. Using fresh, local ingredi-
ents, Pajo’s is (of course) famous for its fish and chips—it’s their motto after all. From the seafood chowder to its oh-so-famous halibut and chips, the crispy shells and soft centres of every fish bring customers back again and again, as seen from the crowds during the first days of opening
at YVR. The airport community is delighted to have Pajo’s Fish and Chips jump on board with a menu that is designed to impress travellers from all around the world and further enhance YVR’s award-winning concession program.

The flight will continue to use Boeing 757 aircraft and will depart YVR two days a week on Fridays and Sundays at 3:45pm and arrive at KEF at 6am. It will depart KEF on Thursdays and Saturdays at 5:10pm and arrive in YVR at 5:50pm. In 2018, service will ramp up to three days a week. “Icelandair began seasonal
service from Vancouver on May 14, 2014 and has continued to see increased demand to Iceland and beyond,” said Birkir Hólm Guðnason, Icelandair CEO. “Our new year-round schedule will offer Vancouverites a refreshing alternative to more than 25 destinations in Europe and we look forward to welcoming you aboard.” In addition to offering passengers more connections, Icelandair’s service will create 61 jobs and will contribute $3.4-million in Gross Domestic Product to the B.C. economy. Icelandair invites passengers to fly on a glacier Iceland’s leading airline since 1937, Icelandair has added some coolness to the skies with the launch of its new glacier-themed plane, Vatnajokull. The Vatnajokull livery takes to the skies as part of Icelandair’s current fleet, guaranteeing passengers an in-flight experience of one of Europe’s largest glaciers from inside and out. The hand-painted aircraft exterior, commissioned as part of Icelandair’s 80th anniversary, represents the beauty and grandeur of the Vatnajokull glacier, located in southeast Iceland. The interior has also been adorned with details to replicate the nuances of the glacier itself. Ice blue ambient lighting illuminate the main cabin; the headrests features an ice white and brilliant turquoise design; serving carts are transformed into rolling glacier caves; even complimentary drinks, snacks and napkins include a glacier motif. Vatnajokull is the second handcrafted livery to join the Icelandair fleet, along with the northern lights-themed Hekla Aurora, launched in 2015. “We are thrilled to share Vatnajokull with our passengers and know they will enjoy this unique on-board glacier experience,” said Birkir Hólm Guðnason, Icelandair CEO. “Icelandair is committed to giv-

The glacier, which cur-

Star Alliance celebrates 20 years Last month, Star Alliance, the largest global airline alliance by passenger count, returned to Frankfurt, Germany, the place of its birth, to celebrate 20 years of “Connecting People and Cultures” and brief member airlines on its current business plan and future strategy. The meeting on May 14, was held 20 years to the day when its founder members—Air Canada, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, THAI and United—first announced they would come together to form the world’s first global aviation alliance. Star Alliance enters its third decade with a strong and comprehensive network serving more than 1,300 destinations in 191 countries. Connectivity continues to expand through the launch of new routes and increasing frequencies by members, while network reach is slated to grow through the addition of local and regional airlines. Against this background, the Alliance’s strategic focus has shifted from network expansion to providing a seamless experience to the more than 14-million annual customers who connect between member carriers on their journeys.
Air Canada is one of the founding member airlines of the Star Alliance global airline alliance.
Going forward, digital technologies will lie at the heart of this strategy. The IT hub infrastructure, which the Alliance put in place in recent years, has already enabled the Alliance to improve the reliability of processes such as through-check in for multicarrier itineraries or ensuring fast crediting of accrued frequent flyer miles into the correct customer account. For example, in the case of missing flyer miles, members in any Star Alliance frequent flyer programme (FFP) can now claim these online through their own FFP website, even when the miles were collected on another Star Alliance member carrier flight. The baggage hub, the most recent IT hub project, went live at the end of 2016 and facilitates baggage message transfer between member airlines, their ground handlers and the baggage
handling systems at airports. Today it processes on average five-million baggage messages a day. This allows the airlines to better steer baggage operations and to keep customers informed on the status of their bag. Once implemented across the entire network, it will become easier to give customers proactive updates on their baggage delivery status. Using the existing IT hub, Star Alliance has introduced a new functionality, which allows front-line employees to better assist customers in case of irregularities. Should a passenger’s feeder flight be delayed, the connecting boarding pass information can now be accessed by the airline operating the feeder flight, allowing a faster and simpler rebooking process. Until now, such transactions at times still required calling the other airline involved. As part of its customer inter-

action for its 20th anniversary, Star Alliance is running a global competition, inspired by the theme of “Connecting People and Cultures”, which offers winners the chance to become a mileage millionaire. Each of the Alliance’s 21 FFPs is offering one-million miles (or equivalent) to one competition winner. Entrants are asked to upload a picture of themselves and to share a cultural experience they enjoyed at staralliance.com/ mileagemillionaire. The cultural experiences will be shown on an interactive world map. The competition runs to July 31, 2017. In support of the 20th anniversary campaign, each of the 28 Star Alliance member carriers has come up with their own local cultural experience idea, providing some inspiration on what can be done with a million flyer miles. The five founding carriers, Air Canada, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, THAI and United, have gone one step further by challenging National Geographic’s Travel Nomad, Robert Reid, to test their local cultural experience recommendations personally and report on his experience.
Charles Duncan has been named as the new head of WestJet Encore, WestJet’s regional airline. In his most recent role at United Airlines, Duncan was senior vice-president, technical operations. While at United, he oversaw the maintenance organization of 12,500 employees, including aircraft line and base maintenance, maintenance planning, reliability, ground service equipment, facilities and supply chain. During his 20-year career in aviation, Duncan has held several leadership positions, including vice-president, Chicago O’Hare Hub, where he was responsible for all operational aspects of United’s largest hub, including 10,000 total employees, 600 daily flights and 50,000 customers. Duncan was also the vicepresident, Europe, Middle East, Africa and India for United Airlines and president and chief operating officer, Continental Micronesia for Continental Airlines. “Charles is a proven leader with extensive experience in operations, commercial and general management for global airlines,” said Gregg Saretsky, WestJet president and CEO. “His

operating skills and effectiveness working with teams will continue the success that WestJet Encore has already had in just less than four years of operations.” Pending immigration approval, Duncan will begin his new role at WestJet this month. “I have spent my career in aviation because it combines my love of aircraft, travel and people,” said Duncan. “Coming on board an airline like WestJet Encore with its huge growth curve, passionate employees and caring culture is a perfect fit with my professional background. I look forward to moving into the role and supporting this dynamic team in realizing even greater impact across the WestJet network.”

Canadians invited to celebrate National Aboriginal Day
Carved in the Clayoquot tradition of the Nuu-chah-nulth people, these Welcome Figures located in the International Terminal, Level 2, before security, are based on those that would be placed on the beach in front of a village or a big house to greet guests invited to special events. Each figure is designed to look out to sea, arms raised, palms facing upward. The male figure wears the traditional knobbed hat denoting a high-ranking personage, possibly a whaling chief. The female figure wears the common domed hat.

Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. The Canadian Constitution recognizes these three groups as Aboriginal peoples, also known as Indigenous Peoples. In cooperation with Indigenous organizations, the Government of Canada chose June 21, the summer solstice, for National Aboriginal Day. For generations, many Indigenous Peoples and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on or near this day due to the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year. Throughout the year, visitors to YVR can view one of the best and largest collections of northwest coast Native art in the world. The extensive collection is a result of the YVR Art Foundation (YVRAF), a nonprofit, charitable organization founded in 1993 by Vancouver
Airport Authority to foster the development and enhancement of BC First Nations art and artists. The Foundation provides scholarships, grants, awards and exhibition opportunities for BC First Nations artists, and in 2015 the Foundation expanded program eligibility to include Yukon First Nations artists. The Foundation’s programming addresses a need expressed by the late Bill Reid, acclaimed Haida master, one of Canada’s greatest artists, and a founding patron of the YVRAF, who said that “artists need to learn the basic knowledge and skills of northwest coast art if quality is to be maintained and evolution of the art is to flourish.” To date, the YVR Art Foundation has awarded nearly $400,000 and 90 scholarships, grants and awards to BC and

Strong air traffic growth prompts NAV Canada to propose rate decrease NAV Canada, the independent, non-profit entity that manages and operates Canada’s air traffic control system, has unveiled a rate revision proposal that would decrease rates by an average of 3.9 per cent from existing base rates. This effectively continues a temporary rate reduction that was implemented in 2016. The reduced base rate and the temporary reduction would both become effective on September 1, 2017; the beginning of the company’s fiscal year. Rates will be further reduced by an across-the-board, one-time
refund totalling approximately $60-million. The benefits of the extended rate decrease and one-time refund will mostly be enjoyed by airlines. The strong traffic results in the current fiscal year (2017) and forecasts for fiscal 2018 have enabled NAV Canada to propose these changes, the second year in a row that base rates will have been reduced. “Traffic growth over the past year has been higher than expected, considering the actual GDP growth rates of major world economies,” said Neil Wilson,

Aircraft manufacturers to showcase new airplanes and services at Paris Air Show
Boeing 737 MAX 9, the newest member of the 737 MAX family.
The Airbus A350-1000 is expected to enter into service in mid-2017.
Established in 1909, the Paris Air Show, which is held every odd year at Le Bourget Airport in north Paris, France, will run from June 19-25 this year. Organized by the French aerospace industry, this prestigious aircraft exposition includes demonstrations by military and civilian aircraft to potential customers. The world’s major aircraft manufacturers, aerospace companies and representatives of the military forces of many countries attend the Paris Air Show. Boeing has confirmed that a 737 MAX 9 flight test airplane will participate in the event’s flying display. The aircraft completed its first flight in April 2017. Boeing also will bring to the show a 787-10
vative technologies, products and services, from market-leading commercial and military aircraft to helicopters and space systems. In addition, there will be a new Digital Exhibition zone at the Airbus pavilion, where traditional mock-ups give way to the latest digital immersive and interactive display technologies to convey an improved experience of Airbus’ products and services, in life-like virtual reality scenarios. In the static display areas, visitors will see a plethora of Airbus’ real operational and development aircraft. Notably, this year’s show will mark the first time that Airbus publicly showcases in a flying display the A321neo and the latest member of the A350 XWB family—the A350-1000—which is currently
Dreamliner flight test airplane. The 787-10 is the newest and largest model of the 787 family. The 787-10 completed its first flight in March 2017 and is scheduled to enter commercial service in 2018. Additionally, Boeing customers and partners will bring several aircraft to Le Bourget. Qatar Airways plans to present a 777-300ER, showcasing its newly designed business class interior. The U.S. Department of Defense is scheduled to display several Boeing platforms: the P-8A antisubmarine and anti-surface warfare aircraft, the V-22 multirole tilt-rotor aircraft, the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter and the CH-47 Chinook heavy-lift helicopter. well into its certification flight-testing phase. The Airbus 380 will also feature in both the static and flying displays. Brazil’s Embraer, the world’s third-largest commercial jet maker, expects to have its KC-390 aircraft in attendance. The multirole KC-390, designed to be a direct competitor to the Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules, can perform search and rescue missions, fire suppressions and cargo and troop transportation. Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp. plans to have its MRJ90 Regional Jet at the Paris Air Show. The aircraft is set for completion in 2019 with its first delivery being in 2020. It will compete in the under 100-seat passenger jet market currently dominated by Bombardier and Embraer.

WestJet seeking approval to launch flights to China
Gregg Saretsky, WestJet’s president and CEO, spoke to the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade on June 1, 2017, laying out some of the airline’s global expansion plans. During his speech, Saretsky announced that WestJet has applied to Transport Canada for the designation to fly non-stop between Canada and China. Saretsky did not announce a timeframe for the launch of potential China service or from which
Canadian cities such flights would originate. Currently, non-stop flights from Canada to cities in China are served from Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal airports. In addition to offering flights to China, WestJet also revealed plans for other potential long-haul flights to South America, as well as cities such as Sydney, Australia; Auckland, New Zealand; and New Delhi, India.
WestJet pilots vote for unionization The Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) has reported that the more than 1,400 pilots at WestJet have voted for representation by the Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA). The vote was the result of a focused campaign that began when WestJet pilots approached ALPA about representation options. Prior to the vote, WestJet was the only major non-union airline in Canada. With 97 per cent of eligible pilots participating in the election, which was held last month, 62 per cent voted in favour of joining ALPA. Founded in 1931, ALPA is
the world’s largest pilot union, representing more than 55,000 pilots at 32 airlines in Canada and the US. “We are disappointed with the outcome of the vote but we are dedicated to moving forward as a team,” said Gregg Saretsky, WestJet president and CEO in a statement released by the airline. “We will now focus on engaging in constructive dialogue with ALPA and concentrate on the continued success of the organization for guests, employees and shareholders.” The focus for WestJet pilots now shifts to the ALPA membership drive and establishing pilot representatives in each
base (Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto), which lays the foundation needed to build the WestJet Master Executive Council and start negotiating their first collective agreement. With the successful bid to unionize its pilots, WestJet has also found itself the target of two additional unions wanting to represent its 3,000 flight attendants. The unionization efforts come at a time when the airline has embarked on an ambitious plan of expansion that includes the purchase of up to 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft to service international routes, as well as launching an ultra-low-cost carrier to connect smaller communities across Canada.

In an ongoing initiative to mark 2017 as their 75th year as a Royal Canadian Air Force squadron, 429 Transport Squadron, located at 8 Wing Trenton, Ontario, has unveiled a tail art design created and painted by its own members. The winning design was created by Stephen Rodych, a Boeing Canada Field Service Technical Representative sup-
porting the CC-177 Globemaster III in Trenton, Ontario. His design won the popular vote amongst the squadron and his design was approved by RCAF leadership for the anniversary tribute. The design features a bison, which also appears at the centre of the squadron’s crest. Squadron members are nicknamed “Bisons”. This tribute, painted by 429 Squadron’s own aircraft struc-
tures technicians Master Corporal Shawn O’Hara, Corporal Jacob Abusow and Corporal Steven Leblanc, commemorates the squadron’s 75th anniversary and also marks the 10th anniversary of the CC-177 Globemaster III fleet in Canada. The design also holds the distinction of being the first-ever tail art painting on a Globemaster anywhere in the world.

Air New Zealand gives a sneak peek at the future of inflight service
Children travelling alone on Air New Zealand can now receive an Airband monitoring bracelet at checkin. The wristband is embedded with a chip that is scanned at stages of the journey, triggering text notifications to be sent to up to five nominated contacts.
Air New Zealand has been working with an information technology service provider on unique software for Microsoft’s augmented reality (AR) viewer that could support cabin crew as they carry out their inflight duties by aggregating and displaying key customer information directly in front of them.
Data such as a customer’s preferred meal and drinks choice, onward travel and loyalty membership details could be displayed. The programme is even sophisticated enough to detect the emotion of the customer by picking up on visual and audio cues.
“This software is a notable example of us collaborating with other partners and exploring how technology could enhance the way our people work as well as the experience they deliver to our customers through greater personalization,” said, Avi Golan, Air New Zealand chief digital officer. The technology could also
allow the airline’s cabin crew to move to a paperless inflight system, presenting added environmental benefits. Air New Zealand has developed a global reputation for innovation, having worked with a range of technology partners and introduced many customer innovations to enhance the customer experience in recent times. These include auto bag drops to speed up the check-in process with face-to-passport recognition and Airband, a wristband for children travelling unaccompanied embedded with technology that allows parents and guardians to track each step of their young ones’ journey. Airband was named Innovation of the Year at the 2016 CAPA Asia Pacific Aviation Awards.

June 23-24, 2017 Lufthansa Aviation Training will purchase 25 new Cirrus SR 20 aircraft worth more than $17-million for pilot training at its Phoenix, Arizona school.
Since 1972, trainee pilots at Lufthansa Aviation Training’s (LAT) US base in Phoenix, Arizona. Around 350 pilots a year are trained at the flight training school, many of whom go on to become pilots for the Lufthansa Group. In addition, customers such as the German Armed Forces, KLM and All Nippon Airways (ANA) also send their pilot to Phoenix to be trained. Since 1972, pilots at LAT’s Phoenix site have been learning their skills using single motor
Beechcraft F33A Bonanza aircraft. Starting in October 2017, Lufthansa trainee pilots will fly Cirrus SR 20 aircraft. “With the new single-motor Cirrus SR 20, the trainees will not only be flying aircraft fitted out with all the latest features, it will also mean a 50 per cent cut in operational and maintenance costs,” said Rainer Hiltebrand, CEO of Lufthansa Aviation Training. A decision on what will happen to the Bonanzas after the rollover has not been taken.
“We will probably offer them for sale to former students of Phoenix,” said Hiltebrand. “For many of our former pupils who are now pilots, there is a very high emotional value attached to these aircraft.” All the new Cirrus aircraft should be delivered in Arizona by February 2018. They will carry the logo of the European Flight Academy. LAT has grouped together its training schools in Germany, Switzerland and the US under this single brand name.

Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said more than 10,000 submissions were sent to the airline and each entry included an average of four different names for a total of more than 40,000 suggestions. “It was obvious that people really put some thought into different themes we could use to name our fleet of eight new Dreamliners including famous explorers to some of their favourite Aussie sayings,” said Joyce.

The City of Richmond is hosting the ultimate birthday party in celebration of Canada’s 150th year of Confederation. The brand-new Richmond Canada Day in Steveston will feature a free, full-day street party throughout Steveston Village alongside the much-beloved Steveston Salmon Festival. A headline performance by Juno Award-winners Wintersleep and fireworks over the Fraser River will cap off the celebrations. “There’s no better time to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary than on our nation’s birthday,” said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “This year, our Canada Day celebrations will be Richmond’s biggest yet with the new street festival, great musical acts, expanded programming for the Steveston Salmon Festival and, of course, fireworks over the Fraser River to cap off the day.” Richmond Canada Day in Steveston is presented by YVR. Highlighting the day is the Steveston Salmon Festival, known as Canada’s biggest little birthday party, the festival is famous for its salmon barbecue where more than 544 kilograms of wild salmon filets are grilled over open fire pits. A Canada Day Parade through historic Steveston village kicks off the festival. This year’s Salmon Festival also features Canadian blues rockers Tom Lavin and the Legendary Powder Blues, a food truck festival and a Carnival Zone featuring attractions for all ages and a midway. Elsewhere in the village will be diverse performances on six stages, including Main Stage performances by Wintersleep, Vancouver’s own blues duo
Harpoonist & the Axe Murderer and upand-comer dream-pop band, Youngblood. In addition to the live music filling the streets, guests will be invited to explore Steveston Village with activities from the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic site down to Imperial Landing and extending to Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site. Visitors can also spend time at the Steveston Museum and Steveston Interurban Tram. The Riverside Village at Imperial Landing and Britannia Shipyards will feature a mix of more than a dozen historic and notable ships available for free boarding from June 30 through July 2. The day will end with a fantastic firework show along the historic Steveston waterfront, presented by Dueck GM. The most up-to-date event information can be found on the newly launched Richmond Canada Day website: RichmondCanadaDay.com. For more information on the Steveston Salmon Festival visit: stevestonsalmonfest.ca. The Steveston Salmon Festival is produced by the Richmond Agricultural and Industrial Society. Richmond Canada Day in Steveston is part of Richmond Canada 150, a year-long celebration designed to ignite the passions of residents, honour the community’s distinct and vibrant cultural diversity, leave lasting legacies that foster civic pride and carry the spirit of Canada’s 150th anniversary into the future. Canada 150 blooms at Richmond City Hall Plaza Richmond City Hall’s Plaza will bloom with colour this month and through to early July with a unique celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary of confederation. Our Home and Native Bloom features more than 4,700 native flowering plants in an inspiring, pop-up floral design composed of plant species native to Richmond and British Columbia. The floral design depicts a “Fluvial Fan” with floral “islands” that symbolize Richmond’s 17 islands and the landforms that have been shaped over time by the Fraser River. The design was commissioned from landscape architecture students at the University of British Columbia, including Nicole Alden, Patrick Beech, Genevieve
Depelteau, John Musil and Allison Tweedie. The large floral display compliments a program of free, lunchtime musical performances, educational talks and familyoriented art activities from June 7 to July 6 at Richmond City Hall Plaza. For a full schedule of events visit .richmondcanada150.com. At the end of the exhibition, the City will host a plant sale on Friday, July 7, 4pm-8pm and on Saturday, July 8 from 9am-2pm at Richmond City Hall. Auto Repair and Maintenance By Bernie Pawlik
Oil change intervals: shorter or longer? In recent years, many vehicle manufacturers have extended their engine oil change intervals. There are several reasons for this: 1) Modern engine oils offer superior lubrication 2) Environmental concerns about waste oil 3) Many manufacturers now offer no-cost maintenance when the car is new, making oil services an expense for them. While modern technology produces superior engine oils, vehicles are also manufactured with very high-tech engines that feature dual overhead camshafts run by timing chains, four or more valves per cylinder and low-tension piston rings, all built with very tight clearances. Twenty years ago, these features would have only been found in vehicles such as Ferrari or Lamborghini. The consequence of infrequent oil change can be devastating to many of these modern engines—missing one oil change could eventually lead to expensive repairs. Some European cars recommend very long oil change intervals—as high as 25,000 kilometres. I can say from personal expe-
rience that oil with that degree of usage will be very contaminated and not perform as effectively as it should. When oil is left too long between changes, sludge buildup occurs in the car’s engine. The sludge will eventually block oil passageways and starve components that need lubricant, causing them to wear quickly. After undertaking intense technical research, I have found that there is a huge variance of opinion amongst the experts— some advise that oil change should occur every 10,000 kilometres, while others state that if a vehicle is driven more than 5,000 kilometres without an oil change accelerated engine wear will occur. In my own experience, along with the information that I have gathered, there are some engines
which can tolerate long oil change intervals and still operate well. However, there are engines that will die an early and expensive death if driven too long without an oil change. As vehicle technology is constantly changing, with new engine designs being introduced, how does one know which engine can take abuse? The answer is: You don’t. So, unless you want to experiment and perhaps end up spending a great deal of money, it is best to keep oil change intervals at approximately 5,000 kilometres for most cars. The exception: vehicles with large capacities and those that use synthetic oil, both of which can be driven for longer periods before needing an oil change.
