YVR Stars go above and beyond YVR is about halfway through its busy summer travel season at the airport and the YVR Stars team has been receiving many outstanding customer care stories. YVR Stars is an airport-wide recognition program, allowing passengers and airport employees to nominate any Sea Island employee for going above and beyond for the airport’s customers, including even feathery friends on their way through the airport. Recently, a daring cockatiel escaped its carrier case and flew into the rafters, remaining there while its owners had to leave to catch their flight. Employing creative efforts and a few days patience, a team of airport staff collaborated to coax down the cockatiel and safely send it on its way home. Sea Island community Softball Slam raises more than $20k for charity Last month, Sea Island’s annual Summit Custom Brokers fundraising Softball Slam broke all previous records, raising $20,972 for Hope for Kids charity. The ever-popular 10th anniversary Summit Softball Slam airport community event took place at Richmond’s King George Park, July 15-16 and was attended by hundreds of supporters. In addition to softball, the event included a silent auction, beer garden, food, entertainment and prizes. The Hope for Kids charity was founded in 2005 as Rubina Hope for Kids charity in memory of Rubina Wong, who perished during the December 2004 Southeast Asia tsunami. Once the initial goal of raising enough funds to build a daycare in Thailand was achieved, the charity began holding annual events, with all proceeds benefitting children in local communities. “A huge thank-you to all participants, sponsors and volunteers for making the 10th anniversary event a tremendous success,” said Gary Eng, general manager, Summit Customs Brokers and member of the charity’s Board of Directors. To register a team for next year’s event, contact Summit Customs Brokers at 604-2783551 or email summityvr@summitcb.com.

YVR Job: Concession leasing representative

This month’s featured job at YVR is for a full-time, permanent concession leasing representative. We talked to Gerard Lim, manager of commercial leasing, for more information. What is the job all about, Gerard? The position offers a unique business perspective on the airport’s non-aeronautical revenues at the terminal. It also gets involved with the strategic initiatives that will shape the future of the concession program. What is the culture like in the commercial services department at Vancouver Airport Authority? The group cultivates a team culture where there is an opportunity to grow skill sets, experience and have exposure to both shaping the business agreement and justifying business proposals through analyzing each business case. What kind of person would

be a good fit for this role? The candidate would have a business mindset towards being creative with ideas and solving issues. A good background in finance, an exposure or experience to understanding the aspects of a successful business proposal together with the drive to create a win/win situation. In addition, a clear ability to interpret the implications of the legal documents and how the financial pro-forma affects the framework of the proposal is an asset. In interaction with the team, the candidate will be able to work as part of a team or independently lead an initiative by communicating across departments within the airport and with the various business partners in the airport community. If interested in applying for this position, visit the careers section at yvr.ca to learn more or to apply for other opportunities.

YVR air traffic update: January – June 2017

Passenger numbers at YVR have demonstrated a successful first half of the year with continued growth across all major sectors, including a record-breaking spike in travellers from the Latin American market. More than 418,000 passen-

gers from Latin America have travelled through YVR in the first six months of 2017, a 25.2 per cent year-over-year increase. The Government of Canada’s decision to remove the tourist visa for Mexican visitors has led to strong travel growth from that

market. The Mexican Embassy in Canada expects more than 300,000 Mexican tourists to visit Canada in 2017, with Vancouver making its debut on the top 20 list as a favourite summer vacation spot for Mexicans. “It has been an exciting first

half of the year for YVR with the addition of nine new services since January,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “We expect this momentum to continue through the latter half of the year, as Air Canada continues

the expansion of its transpacific hub out of YVR and we see our tourism sector grow in markets like Mexico. Our continued success not only provides more travel options for our community, but contributes to the economic growth to our province.” Year-Over-Year Passenger Growth Highlights: January – June 2017 • 13.5 per cent increase in international traffic • 5.2 per cent increase in domestic traffic • 9.5 per cent increase in U.S. transborder traffic International Traffic (Latin America, Asia Pacific, Europe) From January to June 2017, international traffic (excluding the U.S.) increased by 9.2 per cent over the same period in 2016. Latin America Latin America has been a leading market in the first half of 2017 with a 25.3 per cent passenger increase, largely attributed to the removal of the visa requirements for Mexican visitors to Canada. Aeromexico began double-daily service to Mexico in May and was a major contributor to growth. In addition, Sunwing and Air Canada showed strong growth in the sector with increased frequencies to major resort destinations. YVR anticipates this market to continue to grow throughout the year, as demonstrated by WestJet’s recent announcement of new service to Huatulco, Mexico. Asia Pacific The Asia Pacific sector continued with an impressive double-digit growth rate of 19.9 per cent, driven by the full-year effect of Air Canada’s Delhi, India and Brisbane, Australia services, launched October 2016 and June 2017, respectively. YVR also celebrated the launch of Capital Airlines and its new service to Vancouver and Hangzhou, China via Qingdao, along with Cathay Pacific’s additional three-times weekly service to Hong Kong and the launch of Hong Kong

Air Traffic

Airlines daily service between Vancouver and Hong Kong. Europe Europe sector was up by 2.6 per cent over the same period in 2016. This increase was driven by maturation of WestJet’s LondonGatwick Airport service, in addition to Air Canada’s new daily service to Frankfurt, Germany and Air Canada Rouge’s new service to London-Gatwick. Transborder Traffic The U.S. Transborder sector was up 5.3 per cent over the same period last year, driven by Air Canada’s newly launched daily services to Boston, Denver and Dallas, and the full-year effect of Chicago, San Diego and San Jose services. WestJet also had a positive year-over-year impact as it grew its seat capacity with increased frequencies to San Francisco and Los Angeles. Domestic Traffic The domestic sector increased 3.4 per cent over 2016. This increase is attributed to strong consumer demand, with capacity increases from both Air Canada and West Jet. “Looking forward, YVR is expected to see a steady rise in passenger growth as Air Canada recently launched services to Dallas, Denver, Frankfurt, Taipei, and Air Canada Rouge’s new services to LondonGatwick and Nagoya continue to mature over the next six months,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “I would like to extend a big thank-you to Air Canada for their work in launching these six new services this year and for continuing to build their preferred transpacific hub at YVR.” Air Canada will launch new services to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories and Melbourne, Australia in December 2017, marking the first ever direct, non-stop flight from Canada to this Australian city. Boundary Bay Airshow celebrates Canada 150 Photos by Jim Jorgenson

Around & About at Events

The Second World War PBY Catalina amphibian aircraft, which was restored by a group of Victoria aircraft buffs, proved a crowd favourite.

Last month’s Boundary Bay Airshow celebrated Canada’s 150th anniversary with a host of daring and exciting aerobatic performances, as well as static displays of airplanes and helicopters. Sponsored by the Corporation of Delta and Alpha Aviation, the show featured an opening ceremony with a stirring performance by the Delta Police Pipe Band, made up of 33 pipers and 20 drummers.

Father-son duo Bud and Ross Granley perform displays in Soviet aerobatic aircraft—Yak 18T Dual (white) and red Yak-55.

One of the few remaining free-admission air shows, the annual event appeals to people of all ages, attracting hundreds of spectators each year. This year’s dynamic lineup of performances included aerial displays by former Canadian Snowbirds pilot Brent Handy; California pilot Vicky Benzing in a Second World War-era Boeing Stearman; perennial favourites Bud and Ross Granley with their Yak duo act; and Grace Borsari in a Eurocopter.

On the ground, the Port of Vancouver Family Zone included familyfriendly activities such as face painting, crafts, mini golf, wiggle carts and more. Airshows are full of energy and excitement and the Boundary Bay Airshow continues to be a crowd pleaser with action on the ground as well as in the sky.

An important chapter of Canada’s aviation history is told for the first time in a new book titled Bush Hawk (Undaunted Belief) by author S.R. (Rick) Found, which traces the rise and fall of this Canadian-made aircraft. The Found family’s name is famous among bush pilots, worldwide, for having built a tough little freighter aircraft designed for hard service in Canada’s wilderness. With financial backing from department store magnate John David Eaton, the author’s father, Sherman, and his uncle, Nathan (Bud), took on the herculean task of gaining FAA certification for their dream aircraft. Despite both financial and engineering setbacks they hung in and produced an airplane in 1964 that at the time outperformed any similar aircraft being imported from the United States. So why, with an industry begging for the plane, were only 27

aircraft produced? According to the author, financial consultants and timid bankers prevented the Found FBA-2C from gaining altitude. For 15 years, the rights to manufacture the aircraft lay in Eaton’s vault, but with his “Undaunted Belief” in the aircraft Bud Found performed a Phoenix-from-the-ashes resurrection and the Bush Hawk was born, this time to reappear as the

Ten Airbus A321LR (long range) aircraft will be joining Air Transat’s fleet, making it the first North American operator of the world’s longest-range single-aisle aircraft. Air Transat will lease the aircraft and plans entry into service starting in 2019. The LR option on the A321 extends the aircraft’s range to up to 7,400 kilometres and brings with it a

30-per cent reduction in operating cost compared to its nearest competitor. The A321LR enables airlines to access new longhaul markets that were previously inaccessible with current single-aisle aircraft. With 206 passengers in a typical two-class layout, the aircraft offers the possibility for each passenger to carry up to three bags.

Air New Zealand to increase Vancouver-Auckland capacity Air New Zealand is planning a service increase of almost 20 per cent (an extra 15,600 seats) on its Vancouver-Auckland route from January – July 2018, providing customers with greater choice and flexibility. The airline will start its service increases by moving from seven- to eight-weekly services during the first half of the January 2018 peak period, making it easier than ever for Kiwis to escape to the snow. Frequency of services will

also grow over the shoulder season, with the airline moving from five weekly services to daily flights during February 2018, and increasing to five services a week in March and April (up from four) and four weekly services during May to mid-June (up from three). Air New Zealand’s chief revenue officer Cam Wallace said the airline is delighted to be able to offer its customers more scheduled flights to and from Vancouver.

“We recognize how popular Canada is as a winter destination for Kiwis,” said Cam Wallace, Air New Zealand chief revenue officer. “We also see the value in increasing services to New Zealand for Canadian tourists, allowing them to escape the winter and enjoy a chance to experience our beautiful summer and the tranquility of New Zealand through the shoulder season.” Visit airnewzealand.ca for more details on flights from Vancouver to Auckland.

Air Canada’s entire fleet to be serviced by Boeing

Air Canada has expanded its maintenance agreement with Boeing, which allows the aerospace company to support the airline’s entire fleet, including Boeing and non-Boeing airplanes. For Air Canada, the expanded agreement means the airline can rely on a single document management system for the online delivery of airplane maintenance

information, regardless of the airplane manufacturer. Boeing’s Maintenance Performance Toolbox suite delivers real-time access to the maintenance documents engineers and mechanics need to quickly troubleshoot and resolve airplane maintenance issues. Air Canada has been a Boeing Toolbox customer since 2014, initially contracting the service

to support its Boeing 767, 777, 787 and future 737 MAX fleet. The airline later added Boeing Toolbox Authoring and Job Card Manager Modules, which allow Air Canada engineering to directly customize maintenance data. More than 200 commercial operator customers currently use Boeing’s Maintenance Performance Toolbox suite.

Virgin Orbit’s modified 747-400 moves closer to rocket launch Earlier this month, Virgin Orbit welcomed home Cosmic Girl, a 747-400 that has been modified to be used as a launch platform for small satellites. Cosmic Girl’s homecoming into Long Beach Airport marked the end of the inspection and modification phase conducted with Virgin Orbit’s aircraft modification partner L3 Platform Integration and maintenance partner VT Aerospace. The FAA issued Cosmic Girl an Experimental Airworthiness Certificate, permitting flight tests to start. The 747-400 aircraft has many attributes that contribute to the ideal dedicated ride for small satellites—the aircraft’s large, robust rocket-carrying capacity, operational flexibility, long range ability to operate in many kinds of weather and maintenance and spare parts supply chains. Cosmic Girl will carry Virgin Orbit’s LauncherOne rocket to an altitude of approximately 10,600 metres before release for its rocket-powered flight to orbit. The first flight is scheduled to occur in the first half of 2018. Virgin Orbit designs, builds and tests LauncherOne inhouse and is at the forefront of composite structures, liquid rocket

to a flying launchpad,” said Tim Buzza, Virgin Orbit vice president of launch. “We are excited to begin our flight test program and continue towards our vision of launch-

ing anyone, anywhere, any time.” Founded by Sir Richard Branson, Virgin Orbit’s state-ofthe-art facility is headquartered in Long Beach, California.

Air cargo posts strongest first half-year growth since 2010

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released data for global air freight markets showing that demand, measured in freight tonne kilometers (FTKs), grew by 10.4 per cent in the first-half of 2017 compared to the first-half of 2016. This was the strongest first half-year performance since air cargo’s rebound from the Global Financial Crisis in 2010 and nearly triple the industry’s average growth rate of 3.9 per cent over the last five years. Freight capacity, measured in available freight tonne kilometers (AFTKs), grew by 3.6 per cent in the first half of 2017 compared to the same period in 2016, with demand continuing to significantly outstrip capacity growth. Year-on-year demand growth in June 2017 increased 11 per cent compared to the same yearearlier period. Freight capacity grew by 5.2 per cent year-on-year in June.

The sustained growth of air freight demand is consistent with an improvement in global trade, with new global export orders remaining close to a six-year high. However, there are some signs that the cyclical growth period may have peaked. Regardless, the outlook for air freight is optimistic with demand expected to grow at a robust rate of eight per cent during the third quarter of this year. “Air cargo is flying high on the back of a stronger global economy,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s director general and CEO. “Demand is growing at a faster pace than at any time since the global financial crisis. That’s great news after many years of stagnation. And, even more importantly, the industry is taking advantage of this momentum to accelerate muchneeded process modernization and improve the value it provides to its many customers.”

British actor and comedian Rowan Atkinson, best known for his role in “Blackadder” and “Mr. Bean,” appears in British Airways new pre-flight safety video.

A team of 10 celebrities including Gordon Ramsay, Rowan Atkinson, Sir Ian McKellen, Thandie Newton and Gillian Anderson make appearances in British Airways’ entertaining new pre-flight safety video, which launches in September. The new video featuring some of Britain’s bestloved personalities has been designed to help customers absorb important safety messages, while boosting fundraising for ‘Flying Start’, the

global charity partnership between British Airways and Comic Relief. “We’ve worked with Comic Relief since 2010 and our customers have already helped us generate 16.5-million pounds for great causes,” said Alex Cruz, British Airways’ chairman and CEO. “We hope the new video will enable us to exceed our goal of raising 20-million pounds by 2020.” Ten celebrities are seen auditioning in humorous sketch-

es in front of comedian Asim Chaudhry, auditioning for a coveted part in the safety video, while simultaneously demonstrating the safety features and procedures on the aircraft. In a characteristic section at the end of the video, Rowan Atkinson comically fumbles around his seat for loose change to place in a Flying Start envelope. These envelopes are available to customers on British Airways’ flights to enable them to make donations to Comic Relief.

Delta, Air France-KLM, Virgin Atlantic to launch combined joint venture

Brazilian Airbus C-295 aircraft tours RCAF bases

Delta Air Lines is deepening its longstanding and industry-leading partnership with Air France-KLM Group with a 375-million-euro (approximately $559-million) investment to acquire 10 per cent equity in the joint venture partner and a seat on the Air France-KLM Group Board of Directors. Additionally, Delta, Air France-KLM and Virgin Atlantic will launch a combined long-term joint venture, supported by a 31 per cent investment by Air FranceKLM in Virgin Atlantic, to offer customers the most comprehensive trans-Atlantic route network. “A dynamic global landscape means it’s more important than ever for Delta to deepen ties with our global partners to provide opportunities for mutual growth,” said Delta CEO Ed Bastian. “Bringing together the strengths of Delta, Air France-KLM and Virgin Atlantic into a combined joint venture will create the trans-

Last month, a Brazilian Airbus C-295 did a cross-Canada tour, visiting three Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) bases where the aircraft will be deployed, starting in 2019. The aircraft and its aircrew stopped at 19 Wing Comox, B.C., 17 Wing Winnipeg, Manitoba and 8 Wing, Trenton, Ontario bases, allowing members of the RCAF’s search-and-rescue teams a chance to see and ask questions about the new aircraft. The crew of the C-295 included members of the Brazilian Air Force undergoing familiarization training and Airbus pilots who are supporting their training. The Brazilian Air Force is in the process of receiving the C-295 aircraft from Airbus Defence and Space. This aircraft has a similar configuration to the C-295W (winglet) variant, which will replace the RCAF’s six CC-115 Buffalos and legacy CC-130H Hercules transports that now dou-

Atlantic partnership of choice for customers.” The expanded joint venture, including Alitalia, will offer nearly 300 daily nonstop transAtlantic flights and convenient flight schedules. Customers also will benefit from the ability to earn and redeem miles across all carriers, co-location of facilities at key airports to improve connectivity and access to each carrier’s airport lounges for premium customers. The investment aligns with others Delta has made in recent years as it grows its international footprint through partnerships with key airlines in regions around the world. The demand created by Delta and Air FranceKLM’s combined customer base and hub airports has enabled new trans-Atlantic routes to give Delta customers expanded choice in destinations and flight frequencies. All transactions are sub-

ject to execution of definitive agreements and receipt of final shareholder, board and regulatory approvals. The Atlanta-based airline’s existing joint venture with Air France-KLM dates to 2009, with the addition of Alitalia in 2010. In 2012, Delta launched a joint venture with Virgin Australia, followed in 2013 by both a 49 per cent investment in, and joint venture with, Virgin Atlantic. In 2015, Delta entered into an enhanced marketing arrangement with, and acquired a 3.5 per cent stake in, its SkyTeam partner China Eastern. In 2017, Delta launched its joint cooperation agreement with Aeromexico and increased its equity stake in the carrier to 49 per cent. Also in 2017, Delta announced a joint venture with Korean Air Lines. Delta also holds a 9.5 per cent equity interest in Brazil-based airline GOL.

ble as search-and-rescue aircraft. The state-of-the-art Airbus C-295W was chosen over Italy’s Leonardo C-27 Spartan and Brazil’s Embraer’s KC-390, a high wing jet, in the RCAF’s search for a new fixed wing search-and-rescue aircraft. The C295W is a mediumsized aircraft, which can operate either as a single transport fleet or complement heavy airlifters and transport helicopters. The new wing design with winglets allows for the carriage of more payload to long distances and ensures the aircraft to achieve four per cent fuel savings. The aircraft’s glass cockpit incorporates an advanced integrated avionics system including four large active matrix liquid crystal displays. The cockpit also integrates autopilot and flight director system. The C295W is equipped with two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127G turboprop engines driv-

ing a pair of Hamilton Standard 586-F six-bladed propellers. The C295W can fly at a maximum cruise speed of 480 kilometres per hour and reach a maximum altitude of 7,620 metres. Its low-level flight characteristics allow flying at a minimum speed of 203 kilometres per hour. The aircraft is equipped with a retractable tri-cycle landing gear, which enables operations even in the most austere locations with short, soft and rough unprepared airstrips. The Department of National Defence has estimated that the full cost of buying, operating and maintaining the planes through 2052 will be approximately $14.7-billion. Under the Government of Canada’s Industrial and Technological Benefits policy, Airbus will be expected to make investments in Canadian companies equal to the value of the contract.

Qantas prepares for its centennial with a herculean painting task

In a nod to the past, every newly painted Qantas aircraft will feature the winged kangaroo, which debuted in 1954.

The saying goes “There’s nothing more boring than watching paint dry.” That may be true if you’re staring at a wall, but what about a 63-metre-long, 16-metre-high Airbus A330-300? Qantas has just started to repaint more than 200 aircraft in new livery in time for the airline’s 100th birthday in 2020. The update is being sequenced with scheduled aircraft re-paints to avoid extra cost. Since it was first introduced in 1944, this is only the fifth time the red-and-white logo on the tail of Qantas aircraft has been updated. The last update was in 2007, coinciding with the introduction of the Airbus A380 to the Qantas fleet. The new edition to the Qantas fleet will be the Boeing 787.

How to paint a plane Repainting is a big task and can take a few weeks for the airline’s largest aircraft. First, the original paint must be removed. While it would be faster to just paint over the existing coat, that would add a lot of weight to the aircraft (in the case of an A380, the paint alone weighs more than 500 kilograms). As part of the preparation, the plane’s doors, windows and engines are taped up. Even the windscreen wipers are removed. Qantas uses an environmentally friendly chemical agent to help strip back the paint, then it is sanded and given a quick rinse, finally revealing the metal skin. This process can take a few days and involves a fair bit of elbow grease. The first coat of paint is

applied using a low-pressure hose to give it an even finish. The primer is used to help seal the fuselage and protect it from corrosion. The white base colour is added, followed by the iconic red tail, wording, shading and silver bands. The aircraft is covered in paper, just like a stencil, to prevent the colours from bleeding into one another. A final clear top-coat is applied to create a high-gloss, fresh-out-of-the-factory look. Qantas aircraft are usually repainted every 10 years, but they’re washed every month. This is done to not only keep the planes looking smart but also to prevent the buildup of grime and dust, which reduces aerodynamics making the aircraft less efficient during flight.

Qantas A330, scrubbed clean and ready for painting.

Wooden boat enthusiasts will get a special treat this month as the Richmond Maritime Festival celebrates everything that’s wood and designed for water. The Richmond Maritime Festival, presented by the Port of Vancouver, scheduled for Saturday, August 12 and Sunday, August 13 at Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site, features free, fun activities for all ages. A festival within a festival, the celebration of wooden boats will include wooden boat-building demonstrations, displays and free, public boarding of historic vessels. Among the ships lining Britannia’s dock will be the steam-powered sister ships, the SS Master and Merrie Ellen, both built in 1922 in False Creek, with storied working lives along the Pacific Northwest Coast. The Ella McKenzie, a wooden tug boat built in 1951, will also be on display. Once a dredge tender and oil spill response vessel in Burrard Inlet, the Ella McKenzie was later used for hand logging in Haida Gwaii, before a 2007 restoration and conversion to a pleasure craft. On land, Wooden Boat Lane will feature more than a dozen exhibitors and include display of various wooden boats, kayaks and canoes. Elsewhere on site, the Britannia Heritage Shipyard Society will display

small wooden boats built on site, while the Richmond Boat Builders will showcase their boat restoration projects. The very popular Kids Cove area will also return with hands-on activities for kids, including the opportunity to hammer together their own miniature wood boats. For those who want to get on water, the River Queen will be offering 15-minute boat rides along the Steveston Channel both days of the festival. In addition to the wooden boat activities, the Richmond Maritime Festival will again feature, roving characters, including pirates, mermaids, wharf rats and log rolling lumberjacks, visual artists, storytellers and continuous live entertainment. There will also be food trucks on site to satisfy any appetite. The wide variety of music and dance performances will include an early Saturday evening performance by local favourite Good for Grapes on the Canadian Western Bank Main Stage. The Richmond Maritime Festival will run from 11am to 7pm, Saturday, August 12, and 11am to 5pm on Sunday, August 13. Admission is free. For more details, visit richmondmaritimefestival.ca. The festival is part of Richmond Canada 150, a year-long program of events and activities. For more information visit richmondcanada150.com.
