Last month, YVR launched the Less Airport Stress Initiative (LASI), an innovative program in which YVR Ambassador Dogs will be onsite throughout the terminals to provide all airport users with a new way to deal with anxiety associated with travel, work and general stress. “We recognize that an airport can be a stressful environment,” said Reg Krake, director, customer care, Vancouver Airport Authority. “By introducing the YVR Ambassador Dogs through our LASI initiative, we hope that our four-legged friends will help to ease any anxiety associated with travel. We want all our guests to have a positive experience at YVR and we know the LASI initiative will enhance the airport experience for passengers, visitors and employees.” YVR partnered with St. John Ambulance and its Therapy Dog program to pro-

Air New Zealand is growing its Vancouver-Auckland operation by nearly 20 per cent from January to July 2018, providing customers with greater choice and flexibility. During the first half of the January peak period, the airline will increase services from seven to eight flights per week, making it easier than ever for
Canadians to escape the cold. Regional general manager Americas Nick Judd said this extra capacity is a direct result of the increased demand for travel in the South Pacific region and the importance of Vancouver in the Air New Zealand network. “This year marks 10 years since we launched our
Canadian service and increasing the frequency of our non-stop service between Vancouver and Auckland means our customers will have more travel options, which is great for Canadians wanting to discover all that New Zealand and Australia have to offer,” said Judd.

Credit-rating agency Standard & Poor’s (S&P) has affirmed an AA longterm issuer credit and senior unsecured debt rating for Vancouver Airport Authority. As one of North America’s most efficient airports and one of the most financially stable in the world, YVR has upheld the S&P AA rating for 12 consecutive years.
“YVR’s success in achieving the AA credit rating year after year serves as a true testament to the success and viability of our unique Canadian airport model that operates as a private, not-for-profit organization,” said Glenn McCoy, senior VP, strategy and chief financial officer, Vancouver Airport Authority.

YVR’s success is credited to an innovative management team that focuses on providing unique business solutions and competitive fees for business partners. YVR has a strong focus on developing non-aeronautical revenue which accounted for more than 50 per cent of the Airport Authority’s revenue in 2016. Non-aeronautical sources include sales of YVR’s awardwinning BorderExpress kiosks, the world’s leading border processing solution and revenue from the McArthurGlen Vancouver Airport Designer Outlet Centre and Duty Free sales. Combined with strong nonaeronautical revenue sources, YVR has continued to maintain the lowest Airport Improvement Fees (AIF) in Canada for all major airports and reduced airline rates and charges by 15 per cent to the lowest rates of all major airports in Canada and competing US airports. YVR remains committed to responsible debt management as it embarks on Flight Plan 2037—the airport’s future Capital Plan, Terminal Plan and Financial Plan. These plans include expanded terminals, new taxiways, a geoexchange (geothermal heat pump) system and upgraded roads and bridges to Sea Island, which will help YVR support the estimated 35-million passengers expected to travel through YVR annually by 2037. “Creating a world-class sustainable airport requires strong financial health, which is one of the Airport Authority’s fundamental responsibilities as a community-based organization that is committed to providing economic benefits to our province,” said McCoy. “Our sound financial planning is reflected in our consistently high credit rating, which is among the best in the world.” Full details on YVR’s 2016 Financials are available in YVR’s 2016 Annual & Sustainability Report at yvr.ca.

Air New Zealand chief revenue officer Cam Wallace said the airline is delighted to be able to offer its customers more scheduled flights to and from Vancouver. “We recognize how popular Canada is as a winter destination for Kiwis,” said Wallace. “We also see the value in increasing services to New Zealand for Canadian tourists, allowing them to escape the winter and enjoy a chance to experience our beautiful summer and the tranquility of New Zealand through the shoulder season.” Visit airnewzealand.ca for more details and to book travel to Auckland.

Since 1994, annual shoreline cleanups have removed more than one-million kilograms of litter from Canadian shorelines. Shoreline litter can have far-reaching and long-lasting effects by altering the sensitive balance of ecosystems.
Get ready for this year’s Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, one of the largest direct action conservation programs in Canada, which will take place on September 16. The Shoreline Cleanup encourages people across Canada to remove shoreline litter to help create healthy waters for everyone, including wildlife and the communities that depend on them. This year, the event falls on International Coastal Cleanup
Day, a day meant to raise awareness about pollution in the earth’s oceans and the efforts that must be taken to keep them healthy. The Sea Island cleanup, organized by YVR and the Vancouver Aquarium, will take place at Iona Beach Regional Park. Located just north and west of YVR, the park is a long, narrow jetty of sand and grass along the mouth of the Fraser River. Since 2012, almost 2,500 kilograms of litter has been col-
lected from the shorelines of Sea Island, with 534 kilograms alone collected in 2016. The Sea Island Shoreline Cleanup on September 16 will take place from 10am to 1pm and free lunch and coffee will be provided—please bring a reusable mug. Free shuttle buses will be running from Templeton Station to Iona Beach Regional Park. Participants may RSVP at shorelinecleanup.ca.

Recipients of KLM bike donations at the inaugural Our Cityride Vancouver event.
Last month, the inaugural Our Cityride Vancouver, sponsored by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, attracted 1,500 participants of all ages and abilities to a noncompetitive 17-kilometre ride through downtown Vancouver and Stanley Park. Through its KLM Cares program, the airline donated nine new bikes to selected youngsters and families. Sixteen more bikes will be offered in the next months to members of the Vancouver community. KLM’s bike donations were carried out through the 365 International Sport Foundation, the organizers of the Our CityRide event to support the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canucks Autism Network and Strathcona Community Centre. Recipients of the bikes included a family of 6 children ages 3 to 17; a young girl and boy who can now attend bike camps for kids with autism; as well as a 19-year-old student attending the
Reduced environmental impact recognized with renewal of Level 2 Airport Carbon Accreditation Airport Carbon Accreditation was launched at the 2009 annual assembly of Airports Council International (ACI) Europe, allowing the assessment and recognition of participating airports’ efforts to manage and reduce their CO2 emissions. Airport Carbon Accreditation is an independent, voluntary program designed to enforce the accreditation criteria for airports on an annual basis. In September 2016, YVR was recognized for its efforts in becoming a sustainable airport and awarded Level 2 Airport Carbon Accreditation by ACI in Montreal. The Level 2 accreditation recognized the efforts made by YVR to measure its carbon footprint and its goal of making significant steps towards the continued reduction of emissions each year. For 2017, ACI has renewed YVR’s Level 2 Airport Carbon Accreditation. Maintaining Airport Carbon Accreditation is a key component of YVR’s goal to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 33 per cent in 2020. YVR has mapped and measured its emissions and is working closely with employees, busi-
ness partners and communities to find opportunities to minimize vehicle, building and aircraft GHG emissions. In 2016, YVR had reduced its emissions by 20 per cent from 2012 and is well on its way to meeting its 2020 target of a 33 per cent reduction. Several initiatives that YVR has undertaken to reduce emissions include: • Implementing energy-saving projects and improving existing operational and maintenance procedures • Investing in a zero emissions fleet through electric vehicles and fleet bicycles • Training Sea Island Businesses on environmental performance inventories and reduction strategies • Installing electric vehicle charging stations for its fleet vehicles and public parking lots To find out more about YVR’s carbon reduction initiatives, please view its 2016 Annual & Sustainability Report at yvr.ca. YVR has more than 170 shops, services and restaurants located before and after security, providing great shopping opportunities to travellers and the local community alike. Air Canada’s new livery features a black tail, engines and underside, along with the return of the circled maple leaf logo.
Passengers at YVR will soon be flying in new-look aircraft as Air Canada has unveiled a major makeover. Air Canada announced the new livery at three simultaneous events across Canada that also revealed new uniforms for all Air Canada employees. The updated look is meant to celebrate Canada and is in time for Canada’s 150th anniversary. “Air Canada’s new livery signals a pivotal inflection point in our 80-year history,” said Benjamin Smith, president, passenger airlines at the event in Toronto, where the airline’s largest hub is located. “On the occasion of Canada’s 150th anniversary year, with our new
livery, new uniforms for our employees, the awardwinning international cabin standard introduced with the launch of our Boeing 787 aircraft and enhanced onboard offerings, the future Air Canada represents the strength of our nation and the future-looking spirit of our airline.” Air Canada’s entire fleet of 300 planes will soon sport the new livery that features a black tail, engines and undersides. It also marks the return of the rondelle, the maple leaf in a circle logo, which is prominently displayed on the aircraft’s fin, fuselage and underbelly. The new look of the planes was designed by international design firm
Winkreative, headed by Canadian entrepreneur Tyler Brûlé. The airline’s current staff uniforms of dark blue with red lettering and logos are being replaced by those with a base colour of black or grey with red lettering and the maple leaf. Canadian designer Christopher Bates is responsible for the staff uniform transformation. Air Canada is currently upgrading its fleet with 23 new Boeing 787 Dreamliners, with 14 more coming in to service by 2019, and also buying at least 45 C Series jets from Bombardier. All of the airline’s new aircraft will be sporting the new livery.
trip starts right here at YVR and we hope these new offerings will give them a reason to arrive earlier and get their shopping done prior to flying out.”
Last year, YVR reached a record-high 22.3-million passengers and introduced 18 new routes and services to give passengers even more options when flying from Vancouver. This year, YVR will welcome even more passengers through the terminals while also adding exciting new routes and services and adding to popular destinations already served. Following is a breakdown of the new routes and services that will be offered at YVR in 2017. February 6: Air Canada inaugurated service to Dallas with new daily service to the Lone Star State. March 26: Air Canada increases service to San Diego from daily to double daily. Hands-on-experience event designed for women to pursue careers in STEM-based fields Females interested in learning more about the Canadian Coast Guard and its career opportunities will have the occasion to do so at an inaugural handson-experience event—Operation: This IS You!—to be held at the Coast Guard’s Sea Island base at YVR on Saturday, October 14. The event is the first in a series of hands-on-experience events being organized by the Achieve Anything Foundation, a federally incorporated not-forprofit organization with a mission to inspire female leaders to pursue STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and STEM-based fields such as Aviation, Aerospace, Marine & Defence. Achieve Anything Foundation events are being hosted by the Coast Guard and other agency and industry partners keen on improving gender diversity within their organizations and promoting opportunities for women in what many still perceive as “non-traditional” fields. From assuring Canada’s marine safety and security to protecting marine ecosystems and scientific research, there are many interesting career opportunities available in the Coast
Guard for women. “We’re excited to participate in this hands-on approach to interest women in the Coast Guard,” said Joanne McNish, regional director fleet, Canadian Coast Guard. “There are so many options to be a part of coastal history: pilot or repair ships, help mariners in distress, work with search and rescue, environmental response and so much more. Join us October 14 and experience your new career.” Activities at the October 14 event will include tours of base duty stations, an interactive search and rescue exercise, dive demonstration, educational games, firehose challenge and a ride to sea in a hovercraft. “The Coast Guard has been a fantastic champion of our annual airport-based events,” said Kirsten Brazier, president of Achieve Anything Foundation and a professional pilot with 24 years flying experience. “I’m excited that with their support we are now able to launch this new series of events in their regular marine environment. As we grow Operation: This IS You! we look forward to hands-on events hosted by other agency and industry partners. We can’t expect women

Auckland Airport to launch digital ‘multi-retailer mall’ in 2018
Auckland Airport plans to create a digital multi-retailer mall service, which will allow travellers to purchase retail products and airport services via mobile and online. The airport has partnered with AOE, whose platform has already been deployed at Frankfurt Airport. According to Richard Barker, Auckland Airport’s general manager retail and commercial, the omni-channel commerce platform will launch in mid-2018.
Passengers will be able to purchase products or services from multiple airport retailers with a single transaction and then collect their items from a single collection point at the airport. “The online platform also means that international passengers can shop at any stage of their travel journey, using their own devices, and at a time and place that is convenient for them—be it before they leave home, on-board their aircraft using in-flight
Wi-Fi, or while sitting in any domestic or international airport,” said Barker. “The platform’s staged introduction will eventually see most airport retailers participating. All Auckland Airport products and services, including parking, loyalty and lounge access will also be integrated into the online mall, making it easier and more convenient for travellers to shop.” For information on flights from YVR to Auckland, New Zealand, visit yvr.ca.
Foundation’s signature event, The Sky’s No Limit – Girls Fly Too!, held annually during the week of International Women’s Day. Since 2012, the familyfriendly, free event has grown from 1,500 to 15,000 participants, with 20,000 expected in 2018. British Airways serves Churchill’s favourite port British Airways (BA) has added Graham’s Six Grapes, the port favoured by Sir Winston Churchill, to its business class (Club World) drinks menu. During Churchill’s era, it was known as Graham’s Vintage Character Port and was served to his guests at Chartwell House, his country home. The historic port has a rich bouquet of ripe plums and cherries and pairs particularly well with desserts and cheeses. “Port is incredibly popular in Club World, last year, alone, nearly 41,000 bottles were served to our business class customers, so we are delighted to be adding Graham’s Six Grapes to the menu,” said Colin Talbot, British Airways’ head of catering. “At altitude, it holds its flavour well, thanks to its good structure, and with the long lingering finish it will wonderfully
complement the dessert and cheese selection on flights.” Additionally, this autumn British Airways will be launching a new restaurant-style premium dining service in Club World, with display trolleys allowing customers to select dishes from a choice of freshly prepared starters and desserts served on beautiful new table settings. The airline also announced a sleep partnership with The White Company, the British retailer that will supply bedding and amenity kits in Club World to ensure customers get a good night’s sleep in the sky. The fresh style of dining and bedding is part of British Airways’ multi-million-pound investment plan to benefit its customers with a focus on excellence in the premium cabins and more choice and quality.

New Movie World facilities provide entertainment at Frankfurt Airport Passengers flying from Frankfurt Airport can now watch full-length movies, documentaries and television series in two new Movie World
cinema areas that have been opened in Piers A and Z in Terminal 1. The free-to-access cinema rooms have been introduced to help keep travellers entertained while they are waiting for their flights. The Movie World areas have been designed to re-created the relaxed ambience of a living
room, with multiple comfortable couches and carpeting to create a cosy atmosphere. The installation of multiple screens means passengers and small groups travelling together can select the content they would like to watch. The movies, documentaries and series are available in multiple languages and passengers
can decide whether they would prefer to listen to the soundtrack using their own headphones or a speaker. Frankfurt Airport’s Movie World areas in Terminal 1 can accommodate 22 people in eight separate TV areas. Air Canada, Condor Airlines and Lufthansa offers flights from Vancouver to Frankfurt.

Solar Orbiter on track to be launched before next total solar eclipse
The total solar eclipse across the U.S. that occurred on August 21 provided a spectacular view of the mysterious solar corona, the one-million-degree halo that appeared around the sun. The halo can only be seen from Earth when the moon passes in front of the bright solar disk. This rare glimpse of the corona during the 160 seconds or less that the eclipse lasts is being studied by scientists to try and answer some of the many questions posed by the mysterious corona. For example, no-one yet knows why it is more than 100 times hotter than the surface of the sun. EVA Air bids farewell to 747 aircraft, unveils new uniforms In a dual celebration held last month, Taiwan-based EVA Air bid a fond farewell to its Boeing 747-400 passenger aircraft and an enthusiastic welcome to the debut of staff uniforms. EVA positioned its retired jumbo jet in the hangar as a backdrop for the catwalk used to reveal the third-generation uniforms. Boeing 747-400s formed the backbone of EVA’s long-haul fleet through the airline’s early growth and development. The airline took delivery of its first two 747s in November 1992 and used them to launch long-haul routes from Taipei to North America and Europe. During almost 25 years of service, EVA flew the aircraft to 28 destinations in its flight network, laying the foundation for its ongoing expansion. “We have flown Boeing 747400s for almost a quarter of a century and used them to create a glorious chapter in EVA’s history,” said EVA Air chairman Steve Lin. “On her day of formal retirement, we offer our heartfelt gratitude to the jumbo jet, her crew and the talented staff that served with her. As we bid farewell to our ‘Queen of the Skies’ and her remarkable service, we
welcome our new service image, our third generation of uniforms. Designed for style, comfort and function, these uniforms will further enhance the professional image of our service team among passengers and in the international marketplace.” EVA’s third-generation uniforms, designed by Taiwan luxury fashion house Shiatzy Chen, will be rolled out this November, approximately two years after it first began development on them. The designer used colour blocks, geometric patterns and streamlined shapes to create professional attire with classical style, choosing verdelite (greencoloured tourmaline) for the base colour. The women’s uniforms feature standing collars that convey the idea of flying through the sky. Collar colours distinguish team members’ ranks. For the cabin crew, red collars identify chief pursers, pink represents deputy pursers and light green signifies flight attendants. For the female ground staff, red collars designate supervisors and light green denotes traffic officers. Scarves set the new uniforms apart from the current ones. The
colourful pattern in the scarves was inspired by the steady growth of trees, symbolizing EVA’s own continuous development and corporate spirit. Uniforms for male ground staff are built around the threepiece business suit concept. Aircraft wings formed by green or orange dots stand out against the background of the uniforms’ black ties, capturing the idea of EVA’s global network. Vests feature pockets where service staff can keep pens and notebooks at their fingertips to jot down passenger information and specific requirements. EVA further ensured the comfort, functionality and versatility of its new uniforms by commissioning a fabric supplier to develop a high-performance material that blends elastic and antistatic carbon fiber yarns. EVA’s special fabric is quick drying and moisture absorbent, retaining flexibility and high breathability so that service staff can move and work comfortably in addition to looking and feeling good while they attend to passengers. EVA Air offers flight to Taipei, Taiwan, from Vancouver. For more information, visit evaair.com.

Airbus plans to test flying-car prototype by year’s end Airbus is best known for large jetliners such as the double-decker A380. However, the France-based aircraft manufacturer may soon be known for a smaller aviation offering—a flying car. A team of Airbus engineers, designers and robotics experts at the Silicon Valley arm of Airbus are working on a flying-car project—a single-manned, autonomously piloted aircraft that can take-off and land vertically. Dubbed Vahana, a Sanskrit word that refers to the vehicle or mount of a god, the electric aircraft uses eight propellers mounted on two sets of wings, both of which tilt depending on whether the car is flying vertically or horizontally.

United Airlines is ensuring that its employees play an integral part in every step of the new uniform creation, which is expected to be unveiled in 2020. Rendering of Airbus’ flying-car concept, Vahana, an electric, driverless, flying vehicle.
The aircraft does not need a runway, is self-piloted and can automatically detect and avoid

United Airlines has partnered with three world-class design and apparel companies— Brooks Brothers, Tracy Reese and Carhartt—to inspire and create a new line of uniforms for its more than 70,000 front-line employees. United is also partnering with TUMI, the international brand of premium travel, business and lifestyle accessories, to be the official luggage provider for all 24,000 flight attendants. “The partners we’ve selected uniquely match what our employees asked for in a uniforms program—style, comfort and durability,” said Kate Gebo, senior vice president of global customer service delivery and chief customer officer of United. “We recognized early on that this would not be a ‘one size fits all’ solution—front-line employees perform vastly different roles and deserve a uniform that meets their specific needs, created by leaders in the apparel business.

Our United family is excited to see how these trusted and innovative brands will deliver worldclass uniforms in close collaboration with our employees.” Earlier this year, United started what will be a multi-year process to ensure the proper amount of time for collaboration among employees, labour leadership and the partner brands, as well as ample time to test uniforms before finalizing designs and materials. Employee feedback will be used to inform every aspect of the design process, which will be followed by multiple thorough wear tests with employees to ensure optimal comfort and functionality of designs and materials. United anticipates rolling out the new uniforms in 2020. United offers flights from Vancouver to Chicago, Denver, Houston, Newark, San Francisco and Washington, DC. Now in its sixth year, the Vancouver Chinook Classic Catch and Release Derby is a premier two-day salmon fishing event that supports local charities and salmon stewards. The tournament raises awareness and funds for the Pacific Salmon Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation and restoration of wild Pacific salmon and their natural habitats. During the weekend of August 19-20, fishermen and guides enjoyed moorage at Pier 73 Marina & Yacht Club on the Fraser River, with many of them experiencing the amenities at the Pacific Gateway Hotel Vancouver Airport. Saturday morning began with high winds that held off in the sunny afternoon conditions. At day’s end, a dinner, silent and live auctions, prize giveaways and party event provided a great ending to an eventful day of fishing. On Sunday afternoon, fishermen returned to Pier 73 for a BBQ and the awards ceremony, which included the largest cash prize of any fishing derby in Vancouver. First-place award cheque

NAV CANADA to refund $60-million to customers and reduce base rates

77th Anniversary of Battle of Britain Air Forces Garden of Remembrance, Stanley Park Bus Loop Ceremony and parade, starting at 1pm. A free family event; all visitors welcome. For more information, visit battleofbritain.ca.
NAV CANADA will proceed with its proposal to decrease existing base rates charged to its customers by an average of 3.5 per cent and implement a temporary one-year rate reduction of 0.4 per cent. This, effectively, continues the temporary rate reduction that was implemented last year. NAV CANADA will also reimburse its customers approximately $60-million in a one-time 4.6 per cent refund. “Higher than expected traffic growth this year has put us in a position to be able to refund $60-million to our customers,” said Neil Wilson, president and CEO. “In the past, NAV CANADA has spread the return of previous years’ surpluses, when applicable, by temporarily reducing rates for the coming year. With the unusually high traffic growth, we decided to implement a refund, which will enable our customers to fully benefit sooner.”
The 3.5 per cent average reduction to base rates and the 0.4 per cent one-time rate reduction will both become effective on September 1, 2017, the beginning of the company’s fiscal year. For general aviation charges (annual, quarterly and daily airport charges), the reduction will be implemented on March 1, 2018 consistent with the revision cycle for these charges. The revised base rates will come into effect just as the 3.9 per cent temporary rate reduction, which is currently in place, expires on August 31, 2017. NAV CANADA’s service charges are levied on airlines and other owners and operators of aircraft to recover the costs of providing air navigation services. Established in 1996, NAV Canada provides air traffic control, airport advisory services, weather briefings and aeronautical information services for more than 18-million square kilometres of Canadian domestic and international airspace.

International Association of Airport Executives Canada Training Course, AWC Airport Wildlife Control Port Hardy Airport, 3675 Byng Rd, Port Hardy, BC Training focuses on both the theory and philosophy of wildlife control at airports and on the practical aspects of airport wildlife management. Wildlife controllers will be taught to use bird behavior to “teach” birds to avoid the airport, rather than rely on techniques to simply scare birds off the airport. While this is a more difficult set of skills to teach, it is the only system that will result in an effective wildlife control program. For more information, visit iaaecanada.org.

Captains of the Clouds (a.k.a. Shadows of Their Wings), is a 1942 Warner Bros. war film in Technicolor, directed by Michael Curtiz and starring James Cagney. Notably, it was the first feature length Hollywood production filmed entirely in Canada. The film stars James Cagney and Dennis Morgan as Canadian pilots who do their part in the Second World War, and features Brenda Marshall, Alan Hale, Sr., George Tobias, Reginald Gardiner and Reginald Denny in supporting roles.
The title of the film came from a phrase used by Billy Bishop, the First World War fighter ace, who played himself in the film. The same words are also echoed in the narration of The Lion Has Wings documentary (1939). In 1942, Canada had been at war with the Axis Powers for over two years, while the United States had only just entered in December 1941. A film on the ongoing Canadian involvement made sense for the American war effort. The films ends with an
epilogue chronicling the contributions of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) to the making of the film. Three of the aircraft used in the flying sequences survive: the wreckage of the Noorduyn Norseman is on display at the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre, Sault Ste Marie Ontario Canada; the Fairchild 71 is now displayed in the Alberta Aviation Museum; the North American NA-64 Yale is located at the No.6 RCAF Dunnville Museum, Dunnville Ontario, Canada.

The City of Richmond’s multipurpose RichmondBC App is now available for users of both iPhone and Android devices. The updated version of the app offers a variety of features to customers, including comprehensive information about the City’s parks, recreational, cultural and heritage facilities, programs and events. The updated version of the app, which was launched earlier this year for iPhone, is available through Google Play for Android users. It allows users to create a Digital Recreation Membership Pass rather than carry a physical card; create a personalized City of Richmond Profile (MyProfile) login for a custom view of their registered programs; and
more easily locate garbage and recycling schedules. The app is a powerful tool for users to discover the many activities offered in City facilities, learn about community events and find details about many local parks. The app provides direct access to an interactive map with a complete list of all City parks, recreation, heritage and cultural facilities as well as the Richmond Olympic Oval. Users will be able to search the location, history, hours of operation and GPS coordinates of each facility and obtain directions to get there. The app is free to download at both Google Play and Apple stores.

The Canadian Adult Recreational Hockey Association (CARHA) has selected Richmond as the Host City for the 2020 CARHA Hockey World Cup. The world-renowned CARHA Hockey World Cup is organized every four years in a select Canadian city and is an event that attracts participants from across Canada, the United States, and Europe. In March and April of 2020, more than 120 adult recreational hockey teams from more than 15 countries will travel to Richmond for this week-long event. The event has been labelled the “Olympics” of recreational hockey and since its inception it has grown to be the largest international adult recreational hockey tournament in the world. The 2020 CARHA Hockey World Cup will mark the seventh time the event has been hosted in a select Canadian city. Previous Host Cities include Toronto (1996), Vancouver (2000), Ottawa (2004), Quebec City (2008), Sault Ste. Marie (2012) and
Windsor (2016). The 2016 edition of the event generated an estimated $10.1-million in economic impact for the City of Windsor. Richmond has a rich hockey history and was selected from three finalist communities, including Quebec City, Quebec and Regina, Saskatchewan, after an extensive and competitive bid process. The City of Richmond has worldclass accommodations and hockey facilities, including the Richmond Olympic Oval, Richmond Ice Centre and Minoru Arenas, that will be utilized throughout the seven days of the event. Participants from around the world will fill more than 800 hotel rooms per night and will play more than 250 games in the community throughout the week. In addition, local restaurants, pubs, shops and malls can expect positive spinoff with an influx of out of town traffic during the event. Registration for the event will open this fall. Auto Repair and Maintenance
The challenges of repairing an air conditioning system dash; leaks that only show up when the system is fully charged and operating; and leaks that may only occur when a vehicle hits a bump on the road. To ensure that the problem is diagnosed as efficiently as possible, here is a brief outline of tests that should be performed: A refrigerant identification to be certain that the installed refrigerant is either R12 or R134a. All other types of refrigerants and contaminated refrigerants must be properly eliminated. If the refrigerant passes identification, the system operating pressures should be tested—if pressures are low, there is likely a leak in the system. The refrigerant should then be evacuated and a leak diagnosis performed. There are several methods for leak detection: nitrogen gas, UV dye, electronic leak detectors and ultrasonic leak detection. Most leaks will be found with these methods, except for the previously mentioned factors that make it difficult to do so. After leaks are found and repaired, the air conditioning system should be refilled and a reinspection performed for further leaks Further areas of mechanical problems are blockages in the air conditioning system. These may

FALL MAINTENANCE
By Bernie Pawlik www.pawlikautomotive.com 604.327.7112
The most common areas in which problems will occur in a vehicle’s air conditioning system are mechanical—the most common—or electrical. In general, electrical problems once found and repaired seldom require further attention. Mechanical concerns, however, are another matter. The mechanical components of a car’s air conditioning system include: the compressor; accumulator or filter/dryer; evaporator core; and condenser. These parts are all connected by hoses and lines. Contained within the system is the refrigerant—a special fluid that can change its state from gas to liquid and in so doing cool the inside of the car. Leaks are the most common mechanical failure; however, compressors will fail and blockages can occur in many areas of the system. Finding leaks and blockages can be time-consuming and may require multiple diagnostic procedures, which may also include multiple repairs. It is impossible to be 100 per cent certain when diagnosing an air conditioner problem because of several factors. These include hidden components, such as the evaporator that is contained inside a box under the

not be evident until all leaks are repaired and the system is fully recharged and tested. If system pressures are too high or low and/or interior cooling is inadequate, further diagnosis will be required. Repairs to an air conditioning system can be simple or complex, sometimes requiring multiple diagnostic and repair procedures. It is possible to replace the entire system, but this is cost-prohibitive as the air conditioning system consists of many parts distributed throughout the vehicle.
