Mexican airline Interjet is launching year-round service at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) this month. Interjet will offer passengers non-stop access between YVR and Mexico City International Airport (MEX) and Cancún International Airport (CUN). These new services will operate four-times weekly

beginning on October 26, 2017. “We are excited to welcome Interjet to the YVR family—they are a great addition to our airline partners,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “These new services provide customers looking for either business opportunities or holiday destinations more options

to get to Mexico as well as easy access to Latin America through Interjet’s extensive network.” Interjet has been in operation for more than a decade with hubs in Mexico City, Toluca and Cancún. The airline employs nearly 4,500 people across its network and offers nearly 270 daily flights, connecting more than

50-million passengers per year to 55 destinations in Mexico, United States, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean. “We are pleased to add Vancouver as our third destination to Canada,” said José Luis Garza, managing director of Interjet. “We believe that this beautiful city is a natural step within our coverage in this important market. Thanks to the

increased interest in connectivity between the two countries, we offer this new transportation option to Canadian tourists and Mexicans who travel for business, pleasure or to study in that country.” The new service will contribute $16.3-million in total economic output, including adding 106 jobs to the B.C. economy and $8.6-million in Gross Domestic Product to the province. It will also provide opportunities for B.C. businesses to reach new customers, suppliers and investors throughout Mexico and Latin America. Interjet will operate an Airbus A320 aircraft on these routes, with seat capacity for 150 passengers. For further details and to book flights, please visit interjet.com.

This nonstop service will provide passengers travelling through YVR with more choice and will support YVR’s vision to connect Asia with the Americas. “This is excellent news—YVR greatly values our partner WestJet and their efforts to link our airport with key destinations around the world,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “Mexico City is rich in experiences, offering incredible tourism options and a broad range of business opportunities. It’s also one of Latin America’s key connecting hubs— providing passengers with access to

We are excited to work with WestJet to ensure this new route is a big success.” The service will further drive passenger growth in this key region, a strategic priority for YVR following the Canadian government’s recent removal of visa requirements for Mexican visitors to Canada. Latin America was the leading market for YVR in the first half of 2017, increasing 25 per cent over the same period in 2016. YVR anticipates this market to continue its robust growth with the help of WestJet and its other partners. “We are proud of our investments in Vancouver International Airport as we continue to grow our west coast hub,” said Ed Sims, WestJet execuSee MEXICO SERVICE page 2

YVR wins big at 2017 World Routes Conference

The YVR team received dual awards at the 2017 World Routes Conference in Barcelona, Spain.

Each year, the World Routes Conference, one of the most prestigious events in the aviation industry, recognizes airports that demonstrate exceptional air service development. The award process includes nominations from airlines and industry experts, followed by a comprehensive review by an industry committee that looks for airports that have provided outstanding support for air services and network growth. Held last month in Barcelona, Spain, YVR was recognized for its outstanding aviation efforts. Demonstrating the strength of the airport’s vision, leadership and growth strategy, for the first time YVR was named winner in the 20- to 50-Million Passengers category and the Overall Winner. “This is an incredible achievement for our airport, our province and our partners,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport

Community Authority. “I am very proud to see that YVR’s efforts have been recognized among our peers on the global stage. These awards are testament to our airport’s commitment to provide social and economic benefits to the region, our innovative programs such as ConnectYVR, which lowered airline rates to some of the lowest in North America, and the tireless work of our dedicated team—a team that truly understands our mission of connecting B.C. proudly to the world.” YVR stood out because of its unique approach that focuses on building meaningful relationships with airlines and local communities through strategic partnerships—from sponsoring festivals to delivering marketing activations and volunteering with local charities. YVR has enjoyed unprecedented growth as a result of its focus on developing new routes and supporting existing services. It is North America’s fastestgrowing international airport, increasing at nearly twice the average rate. In 2016, YVR welcomed record 22.3-million passengers, a growth of 9.7 per cent, and the airport is on track to meet its ambitious goal of 25-million passengers by 2020. This growth has created jobs and spurred business activity across the country, making YVR a key driver in the local and national economy. The airport added 18 new services and two new airlines in 2016 and is set to continue this pace in 2017. The airport contributed $10.3-billion in total economic output to the Canadian economy in 2015 and expects this to increase as it welcomes more growth over the coming years. Summer 2017 was an enormous success for YVR. Not only did the YVR team pull together to ensure we excelled during our busiest period ever, we also kept on surprising and delighting our communities, passengers and partners with announcements, events and milestones. Here’s a quick recap . . . We welcomed an impressive range of new air services throughout the summer, connecting our passengers all over the world. This included Air Canada’s services to Frankfurt, Nagoya, Taipei, London Gatwick and Boston, as well as new partner Hong Kong Airlines and their ambassador Jackie Chan, who I challenged and, thankfully, did not have to fight. We also announced several upcoming services including new airlines Interjet and Flair Airlines with flights to Mexico City, Toronto, Edmonton and Kelowna. And Air Canada surprised us with a late-summer announcement that included new

services in 2018 to Paris and Zurich and increased service to Melbourne, which starts in December, as well as increased service on its London-Heathrow route. Our team was back out in the community, attending festival days all over the Lower Mainland. And a big highlight was our second annual YVR Chill Out event at Flight Path Park. This fun festival was an enormous success, with more than 3,500 people from the community attending, as well as Sea Island employees. Visitors enjoyed community partner booths, live music, food trucks, family-friendly games, treats, prizes and much more. Our environment team kept up the splendid work. For the sixth year in a row, YVR and Vancouver Aquarium hosted the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup at Iona Beach Regional Park. Last month, YVR launched the Less Airport Stress Initiative (LASI), an innovative program in which YVR Ambassador Dogs will be onsite throughout the terminals to provide all airport users with a new way to deal with anxiety associated with travel, work and general stress. “We recognize that an airport can be a stressful environment,” said Reg Krake, director, customer care, Vancouver Airport Authority. “By introducing the YVR Ambassador Dogs through our LASI initiative, we hope that our four-legged friends will help to ease any anxiety associated with travel. We want all our guests to have a positive experience at YVR and we know the LASI initiative will enhance the airport experience for passengers, visitors and employees.” YVR partnered with St. John Ambulance and its Therapy Dog program to pro-

Future Travel:

Air New Zealand is growing its Vancouver-Auckland operation by nearly 20 per cent from January to July 2018, providing customers with greater choice and flexibility. During the first half of the January peak period, the airline will increase services from seven to eight flights per week, making it easier than ever for

Canadians to escape the cold. Regional general manager Americas Nick Judd said this extra capacity is a direct result of the increased demand for travel in the South Pacific region and the importance of Vancouver in the Air New Zealand network. “This year marks 10 years since we launched our

Canadian service and increasing the frequency of our non-stop service between Vancouver and Auckland means our customers will have more travel options, which is great for Canadians wanting to discover all that New Zealand and Australia have to offer,” said Judd.

Credit-rating agency Standard & Poor’s (S&P) has affirmed an AA longterm issuer credit and senior unsecured debt rating for Vancouver Airport Authority. As one of North America’s most efficient airports and one of the most financially stable in the world, YVR has upheld the S&P AA rating for 12 consecutive years.

“YVR’s success in achieving the AA credit rating year after year serves as a true testament to the success and viability of our unique Canadian airport model that operates as a private, not-for-profit organization,” said Glenn McCoy, senior VP, strategy and chief financial officer, Vancouver Airport Authority.

teers worked together to remove 215-kilograms of litter from the shore. We reached another environmental milestone, renewing our Level 2 Airport Carbon Accreditation through Airports Council International. This is an important step towards reaching our goal of reducing YVR’s emissions by 33 per cent in 2020. And, of course, we can’t forget the launch of the Less Airport Stress Initiative (LASI). This new customer care program has YVR Ambassador Dogs throughout the terminal, providing everyone with a new way to deal with stress and anxiety. It was a big hit with the public, who appreciate seeing a friendly, furry face in our terminal. The last team I will mention is our airside construction crew. This team of YVR employees and contractors was out on the runways and taxiways every night, repairing key sections and making sure the safety of our airfield is topnotch. And thank you to our neighbours for their patience during this busy period. We have a busy year-end coming up, with lots of exciting announcements and events. And I’m confident it will all go smoothly, thanks to the amazing team that just delivered a solid summer. Everybody who works at the airport and on Sea Island deserves credit for our achievements. So, thank you once again to everyone at YVR—to our employees, partners and volunteers. Your efforts are the key to our success.

This month, Community Airport Newcomers Network (CANN) celebrates 25 years for providing services to immigrants arriving in Canada through YVR.

Imagine being an immigrant or refugee in a new country and not knowing anyone or where to go. Luckily, for many newcomers arriving at YVR, the Community Airport Newcomers Network (CANN), operated by the social service agency S.U.C.C.E.S.S., is there to help—the moment they set foot in Canada. With a kiosk located right inside the immigration landing room at YVR, CANN provides the first warm welcome to immigrants and refugees arriving from countries from around the world. Funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the program works closely with the Canada Border Services Agency and YVR to ensure the immediate needs of immigrants and refugees are met, providing referrals to more than 200 partner settlement organizations across Canada. In 2012, CANN was recognized by IRCC for its Best Practices in Settlement Services. As a Resettlement Assistance Program service provider, CANN provides support to government-

assisted, privately sponsored and blended visa office-referred refugees. CANN provides refugees with meals upon arrival and with winter clothing in colder months. All refugees also have quick access to health-care resources in cases of medical emergencies. In addition to in-person service, CANN’s services are available through an electronic services platform at YVR; newcomers can also access follow-up information online in the days after their arrival. Between 2015 and 2016, as part of Canada’s Syrian resettlement initiative, CANN assisted more than 4,000 refugees from Syria immediately upon their arrival at YVR. Based on a recent survey, 99 per cent of responding clients indicated that they felt prepared for their first steps in Canada after receiving information and resources from CANN. This month, CANN celebrates 25 years of welcoming and providing services to more than one-million newcomers to date. For more information on the program, visit cannyvr.ca.

The CANN service kiosk is located in the immigration landing room at YVR.

Eligible Air Canada customers can refuel, refresh or rest at Air Canada’s expanded Maple Leaf Lounge before their international flight. Located directly opposite the priority security lanes for international departures at YVR, the Air Canada lounge has seating capacity for 258 customers.

WestJet’s new ultra low-cost airline, Swoop, will initially operate a fleet of six Boeing 737-800 aircraft in 2018, scaling up to 10 aircraft by spring 2019.

After an 18-month makeover, Air Canada’s Maple Leaf Lounge, featuring contemporary architecture to welcome its premium customers, has finally been revealed. This expanded lounge at YVR is located directly opposite its priority security lanes in YVR’s International

Departures terminal. The new space celebrates the beauty of Canadian design, artistry and craftsmanship, all in a serene environment. Eligible passengers can enjoy cocktails and refreshments before freshening up in the spa-inspired shower rooms and boarding their international Air Canada or Star

Calgary has been chosen as the location for Swoop’s headquarters.

“As we looked around for the home for Swoop’s operations, Calgary quickly rose to the top of the list,” said Cummings. “The city offers Swoop the opportunity to save costs through shared services with WestJet’s corporate head office, the availability of existing infrastructure and talented, experienced WestJetters to draw from. Eight ‘Elsie’ aviation awards presented at 2017 Northern Lights Gala

Heather Bell, current Board Chair of the British Columbia Aviation Council and recipient of the 2017 Northern Lights Foundation Business Award.

Last month, at its annual Gala Awards Dinner, the not-for-profit Northern Lights Aero Foundation honoured eight outstanding women who have made significant contributions in the aviation and aerospace field. Called the “Elsie,” the foundation’s award program is named after aviation pioneer and human rights advocate Elsie Gregory MacGill, the world’s first female aircraft designer. MacGill graduated from the University of Toronto’s electrical engineering program in 1927 and later became pivotal in the design and production of the Hawker Hurricane in Canada during the Second World War. During her career, MacGill was appointed to the Canadian Royal Commission on the Status of Women and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. “Elsie was a woman who was not very well known, yet made significant contributions toward the advancement of women in Canada,” said Joy Parker Blackwood, president of the Northern Lights Aero Foundation. “Our goal is to bring more recognition for her and all the women doing great work in aviation and aerospace in Canada. They are all awe-inspiring role models for our youth.” In addition to the eight Elsie awards presented at the Gala Awards Dinner, Canadian regional airline Jazz, in cooperation with the Northern Lights Aero

Air Canada’s meticulously restored 1937 Lockheed L-10A Electra.

Air Canada’s Lockheed 10A Electra vintage aircraft CF-TCC took to the skies across Canada last month, in honour of the airline’s 80th anniversary. Worldwide, the aircraft is one of only two L-10A Electra aircraft still flying. Departing from Vancouver on September 9, the aircraft made stops at various airports across Canada, including spending two days on public display at the Royal Aviation Museum in Winnipeg. Designed in the mid-1930s by the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation to compete against the Boeing 247 and the Douglas DC-2, the L-10A Electra was Lockheed’s first all-metal twin engine aircraft design, and was first flown on February 23rd, 1934. Although the aircraft was

operated by many commercial airlines in the 1930s, the Lockheed Electra was made most famous by aviatrix Amelia Earhart, who in 1937, disappeared in her L-10E Electra while attempting an aroundthe-world flight. The only difference between the L-10A and Earhart’s L-10E was the latter being equipped with larger, more powerful Pratt & Whitney R1340 engines. Trans Canada Airlines (TCA), Air Canada’s forerunner, first purchased CF-TCC from Lockheed in September 1937 and operated the aircraft until 1939. It was then sold to the Canadian government and operated by the RCAF as part of the War Effort during the Second World War. During the next 40 years, the aircraft was sold several times to various private corporations and

individuals. In 1975, a retired Air Canada employee recognized the faded CF-TCC registration marks on the aircraft while attending an air show in Texas. Air Canada kept track of the aircraft until 1983, at which point the company re-purchased the aircraft, restored it and flew it during Air Canada’s 50th anniversary celebrations in 1986. At the end of the 50-stop Canadian tour, CF-TCC was featured in the Air Canada pavilion during Expo 86 in Vancouver. Since 1986, the aircraft has been maintained in flying condition. Air Canada employee and retiree volunteers from Air Canada Maintenance and Flight Operations have put thousands of hours of personal time into keeping CF-TCC flying for future generations to enjoy.

A group of Canadian mining companies and financial institutions are spearheading a search and recovery project for nine free-flight test models of the legendary Canadian Avro Arrow aircraft. The free-flight models were launched over Lake Ontario in a series of flight tests conducted in the 1950s as engineers developed the revolutionary Arrow, which featured a radical delta wing and a Canadian-made jet engine that pushed it past the speed of sound. The free-flight models were used in a series of aerodynamic experiments that helped fine-tune the aircraft’s flight quality. When the Avro Arrow program was cancelled in 1959, all

materials related to the project were ordered destroyed. The only known artifacts from the program remaining to be found are the free flight models. Last month, sonar imagery and underwater video footage obtained from a Remote Operated Vehicle deployed by Kraken Robotics, confirmed a free-flight Avro Arrow model on the floor of Lake Ontario. “We are very pleased and tremendously proud to announce we have discovered the first example of one of the free-flight Arrow models,” said John Burzynski, Raise the Arrow expedition leader and CEO of Osisko Mining. “We hope to have other discoveries

as we continue the program and are now working on planning a recovery of this first Arrow model. The Arrow is an important—and passionate—part of Canada’s aviation and technological history as a reminder of what Canadians are capable of achieving. We are honoured to be part of this discovery and would like to thank our sponsors, project participants and supporters for their efforts in making it possible.” Any of the free-flight test models that are eventually recovered will be housed at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa and the National Air Force Museum of Canada in Trenton, Ontario.

WestJet and Hong Kong Airlines have entered into a codeshare agreement that will allow Hong Kong Airlines to place its HX marketing code on WestJet-operated flights. The two carriers are building on an existing interline agreement put in place earlier this year. “We welcome Hong Kong Airlines as our newest codeshare partner and congratulate them on their inaugural service to Vancouver in June of this year;” said Ed Sims, WestJet executive vice-president, commercial. “This codeshare agreement provides guests on both sides of the Pacific more choice and opportunity to experience excellent service and travel globally. We look forward to welcoming Hong Kong Airlines’ guests on board and providing them with our caring WestJet service.” Hong Kong Airlines’ daily Hong KongVancouver service will allow its passengers to connect onto select WestJet flights from Vancouver to

Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto. Tickets can be purchased via travel agents or Hong Kong Airlines’ sales offices and call centres. “Our newly launched daily service between Hong Kong and Vancouver has been a great success and this codeshare agreement with WestJet, which extends our network in Canada beyond Vancouver towards Edmonton, Calgary and Toronto is the logical next step,” said Li Dianchu, chief commercial officer, Hong Kong Airlines. “Passengers flying with Hong Kong Airlines can now enjoy a seamless connection experience onto a WestJet flight.” Established in 2006, Hong Kong Airlines’ destination network covers close to 40 major cities across the Asia Pacific region and North America, including Gold Coast, Auckland, Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, Tokyo, Sapporo, Seoul, Bangkok, Bali, Okinawa and its newly launched Vancouver route.

Air Canada teams with Less Emissions to offset environmental impact of flights Air Canada has partnered with Canadian offset provider Less Emissions to offer carbon offsets to individuals and organizations wanting to reduce the environmental impact of their flights. Less Emissions, has been ranked as the highest quality offset provider by the David Suzuki Foundation and the Pembina Institute, a Canadian nonprofit think tank focused on energy. Through Less Emissions, customers can calculate and purchase offsets to help mitigate the greenhouse gas emissions associated with their air travel. To access the program, Air Canada customers will receive a link to Less Emissions at the bottom of their travel confirmation receipt. After inputting the origin

and destination of their flight into the online Less Emissions calculator, customers can select one of two options to lessen their flight’s environmental impact: International Gold Standard certified offsets: Derived from international projects meeting the Gold Standard Foundation’s sustainable development criteria, as endorsed by leading environmental groups including WWF International. Canadian VER+ certified offsets: Sourced from projects located in Canada that have achieved certification under the VER+ Standard, a globally recognized standard for voluntary GHG emissions reductions projects. To reduce its emissions, Air Canada has adopted a four-pillar strategy that includes large investments in building a young,

fuel-efficient fleet. This has helped the company improve fuel efficiency by 40 per cent between 1990 and 2016. Air Canada’s strategy also includes supporting the development of a local industry for sustainable alternative aviation fuel that have a lower life-cycle carbon footprint than today’s jet fuels. One example is Air Canada’s participation as an airline partner in Canada’s Biojet Supply Chain Initiative (CBSCI), a three-year collaborative project that began in 2015 with 14 stakeholder organizations to introduce biojet into the shared fuel system at a Montreal airport. The CBSCI project is a first in Canada and is aimed at creating a sustainable Canadian supply chain of biojet.

Air Transat reconfigures fleet through agreement with Thomas Cook

Air Transat will fly several narrow-body A321 aircraft on its winter season routes.

Air Transat has signed a seven-year agreement with Thomas Cook Group Airlines for the exchange of aircraft on a seasonal basis. Under the terms of the agreement, Thomas Cook will make available every winter to Air Transat several narrow body Airbus A321s and will receive at least one wide-body Airbus A330-200 in return. This will allow both companies to manage and utilize their fleet more efficiently. The agreement takes advantage of the different seasonality of the two companies: Air Transat uses a greater number of smaller aircraft in winter to serve its destinations in the Caribbean,

Mexico and Florida and larger aircraft in summer to serve the transatlantic market. In contrast, Thomas Cook uses smaller aircraft in summertime to fly to destinations around the Mediterranean Sea and larger wide-body aircraft in winter to fly to long-haul destinations, such as Cuba and the Dominican Republic. In the past few years, Air Transat has implemented a flexible-fleet model, through agreements with various carriers, enabling it each winter to increase the number of narrowbody aircraft it operates and to reduce the number of wide-body aircraft. “This agreement marks a

new step in the reconfiguration of our fleet,” said Jean-Marc Eustache, president and chief executive officer of Transat. “It allows us to improve our flexible-fleet model, making it even more efficient. Our fleet will eventually consist solely of Airbus A330 and aircraft from the A320 family, such as the A321, which will mean a more harmonized travel experience for our customers as well as lower operating costs.” All the A321s from the Thomas Cook fleet will be recent aircraft and will have the same cabin configuration as Air Transat’s coming fleet of A321neo LRs: 199 seats, 12 of which will be Club Class.

Increased transatlantic destinations in Air Transat’s 2018 program A European vacation will be even more accessible to Canadians next summer because of diverse destinations on offer in Air Transat’s 2018 transatlantic program. Air Transat will increase its number of direct flights from Canada to the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Croatia, the Netherlands, Belgium and the Czech Republic. The carrier will offer direct service to a total of 27 Europe destinations, accessible from many major Canadian cities via its feeder flights program. It is also giving customers even more flexibility by moving up the start dates of its flights by a few weeks, for those eager to go on a spring getaway, as well

as extending the season further into fall 2018. “Air Transat has been proudly helping Canadians explore Europe for 30 years now and in summer 2018 we’ll be giving even more of them the opportunity to do so, thanks notably to increased use of Airbus A330 aircraft on these routes,” said Annick Guérard, president and general manager, Transat Tours Canada. “We’ve always made sure to present a varied transatlantic product offering for travellers so that they can easily plan the vacation of their dreams and next year will be no exception: our 2018 portfolio is one of the most diversified on the market.” Air Transat’s enriched France program now includes the fol-

lowing scheduled flights to Paris: Vancouver (three flights weekly), Toronto (five flights weekly) and Montreal (13 flights weekly). Service is being increased to Italy, Greece, Spain and Portugal, Mediterranean destinations from Toronto and Montreal—destinations that are popular for both short- and long-stay travel as well as cruise options. Air Transat’s feeder flights program introduced three years ago is being maintained, allowing travellers from Vancouver to access the expanded European destinations available to travellers from across Canada: Vancouver to Toronto (six flights weekly), Vancouver to Montreal (three flights weekly). For more information, visit airtransat.com.

Air Transat offers three weekly flights from Vancouver to Paris, a destination that continues to be a favourite with travellers.

European laminar flow research takes a new step with Airbus’ Flight Lab Airbus has initiated its latest research in further reducing the fuel consumption of airliners with the Airbus A340 Flight Lab aircraft equipped with outer wing sections designed for highly smooth airflow over its surfaces. Known as natural laminar flow, such smoothed passage of air creates less drag than the airflow on traditional wings, potentially reducing fuel burn by as much as 4.6 per cent on a 1,400-kilometre trip. Designated as project

BLADE (Breakthrough Laminar Aircraft Demonstrator in Europe), this research effort utilizes the first-ever A340 jetliner with its outboard wings replaced with approximately 10-metrelong laminar wing panels. These panels represent about two-thirds of the wing size on a short- or medium-range airliner, for which the laminar flow technology is deemed best suited. BLADE is organized through Europe’s Clean Sky aeronautical research program. The BLADE project involves 21 European

partners with 500 contributors, including GKN Aerospace: designer of the starboard laminar flow wing panel, and Saab: designer of the port wing segment. Preparations of the A340 BLADE testbed spanned 16 months, which included integration of the laminar flow wing sections, along with the installation of a highly complex installation of sensors and instrumentation to collect 2,750 dedicated measurements during some 150 flight test hours.

Flying Fresh Air Freight flies higher The global air freight markets grew by 10.4 per cent in the first half of 2017 compared to 2016, according to data published recently by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). “Air cargo is flying high on the back of a stronger global economy,” said Alexander de Juniac, IATA’s director general and CEO. “Demand is growing at a faster pace than at any time since the global financial crisis.” The cargo industry is taking advantage of this momentum to accelerate much-needed process modernizations to improve value to the industry’s many customers. At YVR’s Cargo Village, Flying Fresh Air Freight is experiencing record growth in the 16-million-kilogram annual delivery range. Founded in 1989 at YVR by current CEO Brendan

Harnett, the company has grown from one employee to more than 40 multilingual employees. The company is currently number one in the perishable Canadian freight forwarding industry, with offices in Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto and Halifax. Flying Fresh Air Freight also operates FFAF Cargo division, handling all forms of freight forwarding and transportation services, in addition to perishables. Perishable goods such as fruits, flowers and vegetables were among the first to be carried by air. Over the years, the industry has developed effective handling techniques for transporting chilled and frozen products that utilize cost-efficient and secure packaging and handling methods—IATA publishes a Perishable Cargo Regulations

Manual with which freight forwarders are required to comply. In 2016, Flying Fresh Air Freight was the first to ship fresh blueberries to China and in that same year was also first to ship fresh cherries to South Korea. Fresh blueberries and cherries from B.C., Oregon and California make up the bulk of seasonable products and are shipped on a regular basis during the growing season from June to September. Seafood and other perishables are year-round shipments. Flying Fresh operates on a 24/7 basis to facilitate the on-time delivery of these temperaturesensitive shipments. A trained staff operates product packaging and labelling, which utilizes 27 colour-coded labels specific to each shipment and routing. Registered security agents

operate x-ray equipment that can handle and screen extra large loads in one pass and provide secure screening of shipments as they progress from warehouse handling through to aircraft loading. According to Trade and Invest British Columbia, the agri-food and seafood industry in B.C. exports $3.8-billion annually to 160 markets worldwide and is recognized for its high-quality products and strict safety standards. With an expanding export global market and a highly sought-after perishable sector, Flying Fresh Air Freight’s future growth looks to set new records. Located at #113-114 5200 Miller Road, Richmond B.C. V7B 1K5, Flying Fresh can be contacted at 604 233 1377, or visit flyingfresh.ca.

Bombardier has concluded a purchase agreement with India’s SpiceJet airline for up to 50 Q400 turboprop airliners, making it the largest single order for the Q400 turboprop aircraft program. Upon delivery, SpiceJet will become the first airline in the world to operate a 90-seat turboprop, pending certification by regulatory authorities. SpiceJet operates on average 380 daily flights to 50 destinations, including 43 domestic and 7 international ones. The purchase agreement with Bombardier includes 25 Q400 turboprops and purchase rights on an additional 25 aircraft. Based on list prices, the order is valued at up to US $

1.7-billion. “We are very proud to firm up this agreement with SpiceJet as it is another demonstration of the Q400’s unique versatility,” said Fred Cromer, president, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. “This repeat order will not only increase the Q400 aircraft fleet in the fast-growing regional market in India and in the Asia-Pacific region, but will also launch the high-density 90 passenger model. “This order confirms the airline’s increased capacity needs on regional routes with high passenger demand and demonstrates the increased profitability potential that this unique turboprop configuration has to offer.” Since 2010, SpiceJet has taken delivery of 15 new Q400

aircraft. The airline currently operates 20 Q400 aircraft in a 78-seat configuration to domestic and international destinations. This fleet expansion will provide SpiceJet with the ability to grow profitably and leverage the robust demand forecast in the world’s fastest growing regional aviation market. Bombardier’s Q Series turboprops and CRJ Series regional jets have made significant advances in the Australasia region where approximately 380 aircraft—including more than 240 Q Series turboprops—are in service with or on order by more than 45 customers and operators. Including SpiceJet’s order, Bombardier has recorded firm orders for a total of 610 Q400 aircraft.

Icelandair has introduced a new pricing structure designed to give passengers more fare options when booking travel. The newest fare level, Economy Light, will reward passengers who travel with less, while providing the same on-board service and amenities. Economy Light passengers will be able to pre-select their seats in the same Economy Cabin as other passengers, with an allowance of up to 10 kilograms of carry-on luggage included. “We are making some progressive changes in our service and among those is Economy Light,” said Guðmundur Óskarsson, Icelandair senior vice president sales and marketing. “This option is designed for travellers taking a short

weekend getaway or a quick business trip abroad. The new fare is also perfect when travelling with family members that don’t require additional luggage, such as children or couples who can pack together. These passengers will enjoy the same quality of service from Icelandair including in-flight entertainment, non-alcoholic beverages, gate-to-gate wi-fi access and comfortable, spacious seats.” As part of the new structure, Icelandair Economy Class will become Economy Standard, and Icelandair Economy Class Flex will become Economy Flex. Both these fares still include one checked bag and one carry-on bag. Icelandair is celebrating its

80th anniversary this year. The airline continues to grow by adding new aircraft to its modern fleet, more destinations and popular amenities, including more than 600 hours of personal inflight entertainment and gate-togate Wi-Fi access available on all routes. Icelandair currently flies to 20 North American gateways and more than 25 cities in Europe. The airline also allows passengers to take an Icelandair Stopover for up to seven nights at no additional airfare on their journey between Europe and North America. Steveston Village is bright with community pride following the completion of the Canada 150 public art mural at the Steveston Hotel. Commissioned in honour of the 150th anniversary of Canada’s confederation in 1867, the legacy artwork, painted on an exterior wall of the hotel, depicts the sailing ship Titania and its first visit to Steveston harbour in 1889. This was

important milestone in Richmond’s history, as it marked the beginning of the region’s illustrious commercial fishing industry. The original oil painting, Arrival of the S.V. Titania, by maritime painter John M. Horton, is permanently on display at Richmond City Hall. Steveston Hotel is located at 12111 Third Ave, Richmond, BC.

Steveston Interurban Tram 1220 recently had its roof restored so it can be wheeled outside. Photo courtesy of City of Richmond.

Take a step back in time and rediscover the Interurban Tram 1220, the largest artefact in the City of Richmond’s artefact collection. Lulu Island’s Interurban rail line was built by the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1902. The line ran freight and passenger steam trains until 1904. In 1905, the CPR leased the line to the BC Electric Railway Company (BCER), which electrified the line. In 1913, BCER added 28 tramcars bought from the St. Louis Car Company in Missouri. Among these was Interurban Tram 1220.

The interurban trams did not survive the post-war prosperity that led to an explosion in the number of automobiles on the roads and an expansion of new suburbs not serviced by rail. On February 28, 1958, the final Interurban tramcar rolled the rails between Marpole and Steveston, marking the end of a definitive era for the Richmond community. To see the 105-year-old Interurban Tram, visit Steveston Interurban Tram Building at 4011 Moncton Street, Richmond.

The importance of transmission fluid

a Safe Place... Please visit us on International Arrivals Level 2, or contact us by phone: (604) 303-3010 or email: ChaplainKirkley@gmail.com : yvrchaplaincy.org A transmission is one of the costliest vehicle components to repair or replace.

ber of transmission speeds, the complexity of parts also increases and along with this comes higher repair costs. Vehicles with 5 or more speed units that need replacement can cost from $5,000 to $10,000. Routine maintenance, which consists of flushing the fluid and replacing the filter (if equipped) is an economical way to give a transmission its longest life. Many manufacturers recommend replacing the fluid, usually at around 50,000 kilometres. There are however, several manufacturers, mainly European, that do not recommend replacing the fluid ever: it is supposedly “fill for life”. Most of the rationale behind this is that many of these transmissions use high-quality synthetic fluids, which are very durable and will maintain their lubricating properties indefinitely. Consider though, that inside these transmissions there are components that wear and as a result their fluid also becomes contaminated. Over time, worn particles are being pumped

through the transmission, increasing wear every time the vehicle is driven. It therefore makes sense to flush these fluids. If the correct fluid is installed and the level is proper, only good can come of doing this. It must be remembered that vehicle maintenance schedules are created by the engineers who design the vehicles and while they may bee reasonably correct on paper, they may not always be correct in practice. Routine fluid replacement leads to longer transmission life and is a far less expensive option than to have to pay for complete repairs.

Auto Repair and Maintenance

Most modern North American vehicles are equipped with an automatic transmission, which selects the appropriate gear ratio without any intervention by the vehicle’s driver. The transmission is a very complex piece of equipment with hundreds if not thousands of parts, all of which rely on the transmission fluid to keep operating properly. The transmission fluid performs many tasks—from controlling and operating clutches inside the transmission, providing lubrication to the moving parts to cooling the intense heat generated. Transmission fluid, just like oil, is a lubricant. Its purpose is to ensure the various working parts of the transmission are not subject to damage. The fluid will keep the transmission both lubricated and cool and is crucial to prevent transmission failure. Flushing and servicing a vehicle’s transmission fluid is a relatively new service—this was rare 20 years ago. So why is it now necessary to replace transmission fluid? Modern transmissions keep getting more complex, are packed into tighter spaces and are made with lighter-weight materials, which are often less durable. For many years, 3-speed transmissions were the norm, then it became 4-speed versions, followed by 5- and 6-speed transmissions. Some car manufacturers even offer up to 10-speed transmissions. With these increased num-

use reduction. Richmond has also received recognition as a carbon neutral community for 2016, the third straight year it has achieved this benchmark. Richmond is achieving carbon neutrality by investing in projects that reduce energy consumption and/or GHG emissions such as recent lighting upgrades at fire halls, LED street lighting projects and building automation upgrades. The city also purchases carbon credits through the Richmond Carbon Market. Completed in accordance with provincially regulated reporting protocols, Richmond can use purchased GHG emissions reduction credits from community projects to offsets its own corporate emissions.

Richmond completed its first such project this year with Pacific Gateway Hotel, which recently completed upgrades to its facility. Richmond is already on target to maintain its carbon neutrality status through at least 2018. Since 2008 the City has saved more than 58 gigawatts of energy—equal to the consumption of 1,400 Richmond single family homes per year. In the same period, the city has avoided approximately $3-million in energy costs and more than 8,000 tonnes of GHGs—equal to emissions from 2,500 cars.
