On October 26, 2017, Interjet and Vancouver International Airport (YVR) celebrated Interjet’s first flights from Vancouver. The airline’s nonstop service between YVR and Mexico City International Airport (MEX) and Cancún International Airport (CUN). “Vancouver is one of North America’s fastest growing tourist destinations as well as a thriving business center,” said José Luis Garza, Interjet’s CEO. “Its majestic mountains, sparkling ocean waters, rainforests and natural beauty throughout all four seasons

make it a natural getaway for Mexican leisure and business travellers. We’re also delighted to offer Vancouver travellers access to Mexico on our unique brand, with lower prices, free checked bags on select fares, more legroom between seats and great service that has been embraced everywhere we fly.” The new service will contribute $16.3-million in total economic output, including adding 106 jobs to the B.C. economy and $8.6-million in Gross Domestic Product to the province. The service also provides opportunities for B.C. busi-

nesses to reach new customers, suppliers and investors throughout Mexico and Latin America. “We are thrilled that Interjet has officially started service at YVR,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “It is impressive that they launched to two cities in Mexico and we look forward to welcoming even more Interjet destinations in the future. This gives travellers a great new service choice to these popular leisure and business destinations.” See INTERJET page 2

WestJet employee named a YVR Star Sometimes help comes when it is least expected but most needed. This was true for a pilot who after landing a plane at YVR found himself “grounded” as a result of a dead car battery. WestJet employee Hershcel Agoncillo arrived early to work that morning and kindly stopped to help. The pilot, who had been stranded for approximately 20 minutes, was very grateful for Agoncillo’s assistance in getting him on his way. Named this month’s YVR Star, Agoncillo is an excellent example of a member of the YVR community providing help beyond the airport’s walls. YVR Stars is an airport-wide program that officially recognizes the workers and volunteers on Sea Island who go above and beyond to assist visitors and passengers. In 2016, more than 500 nominations were submit-

Tweet your story @YVRairport using the hashtag #YVRStars, send an email to yvrstars@yvr. ca, or visit online at yvr.ca.

Improvements coming to meet future demand at YVR

Currently, construction is taking place near the Templeton Canada Line Station as crews prepare the land for a new long-term parking option. When complete in early 2018, this parking lot will increase YVR’s parking capacity and will provide more options for visitors to the airport. Please monitor yvr.ca/construction for more information.

As Canada’s second busiest airport, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is experiencing incredible growth. In 2016, YVR welcomed a record number of 22.3-million passengers, a 9.7 per cent increase over the previous year. As outlined in YVR’s Flight

Plan 2037 (SkyTalk, February 2017), it is estimated that 35-million passengers will travel through the airport annually by 2037. This growth will provide tremendous economic benefits to the province, the region and the country. It will also require significant changes to the airport.

YVR is undergoing several multi-year expansion projects to meet future demand. This includes terminal expansions, new taxiways, a geoexchange system, new ground transportation facilities and much more. The airport will also develop a variety of new parking options

to significantly increase parking capacity. “It is our goal to work efficiently to complete the construction in the shortest timeframe possible and with minimal impact to passengers and visitors to the airport, our neighbours and the community as a whole,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. YVR has recently launched a new construction page at yvr.ca/ construction to keep the public informed about these projects. The site will be updated regularly with the latest project information, timelines and, eventually, real-time impacts, such as traffic pattern changes, to ensure travellers know what to expect when visiting the airport. In addition to updating the website regularly, YVR plans to keep the public informed of construction progress and any expected impacts through a variety of communication channels. This will include regular articles in SkyTalk, updates to YVR’s social media channels, signage in the terminal, at the project sites and other areas, as deemed appropriate. “These airport enhancements will ensure YVR remains a strong economic generator for the province of British Columbia and we appreciate the public’s patience as we work to deliver a better airport for everyone,” said Richmond.

“Interjet’s extensive network also provides customers more options for travel throughout Mexico and the rest of Latin America,” said Richmond. Interjet operates its Vancouver services using Airbus A320 aircraft with 150 seats. The initial schedule is for four frequencies per week, per route, at convenient departure times. Earlier this month, Vancouver Airport Authority received two Excellence in Governance Awards (EGAs) from the Governance Professionals of Canada (GPC)—one for Best Overall Corporate Governance (non-public entity) and one for Best Practices in Enhancing Boardroom Diversity. These awards honour entities that demonstrate commitment to corporate governance, adding value for its organizations, and recognizes efforts to increase diversity at the leadership level that lead to improvements in organizational outcomes. “This isn’t just an award for Vancouver Airport Authority, but for the entire airport community,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “It’s proof that our unique governance

model really works and that our focus on improving the passenger experience and serving our community is innovative and industry-leading. “And to be recognized for our diverse board is such a special honour. At YVR, we celebrate diversity and truly believe in inclusiveness. Those beliefs are inherent in everything we do, and to have our board recognized for diversity reflects our commitment to these values that lead to our record-setting growth and success.” Canada’s major airports, including YVR, currently operate under a not-for-profit model and are recognized as being among the most efficient, modern and competitive airports in the world. This unique and now award-winning governance model gives Vancouver Airport Authority the flexibility to best

meet the needs of the communities it serves, while investing in customer service and airport infrastructure. YVR has been named Best Airport in North America eight years in a row, was awarded Airport of the Year at the 2016 CAPA Aviation Awards and, most recently, won the World Routes Marketing Awards. The Excellence in Governance Awards jury panel is composed of seasoned and wellrespected governance experts from across Canada. The awards underscore the critical role that good governance plays in sustaining the value of Canada’s public companies, crown corporations, government agencies and not-for-profit organizations, which contributes to the competitiveness of Canada’s economy and its capital markets.

Holiday seasonal events at YVR Chapel The latter half of the year is filled with opportunities for celebration at the YVR Chapel. In October, the Thanksgiving holiday allowed an opportunity for people to give thanks for all the blessings enjoyed in Canada. This month, veterans and current members of the Canadian Armed Forces will be honoured at the annual YVR Remembrance Day Service, which will be held at 10:45am on Saturday, November 11 at the Spirit of Haida Gwaii: The Jade Canoe sculpture, International Terminal, Level 3. The chaplains at YVR Chapel will work alongside the RCMP and local Sea Cadets to present a 15-minute program, which will culminate in a minute of silence throughout the terminals to honour and remember the sacrifices of members of the armed forces during times of war. In December, the Chapel will help celebrate Hanukkah on December 13, followed by Christmas Day on December 25. Once again, this year the Chapel will be festively decorated for a seasonal Drop-In from December 11-29, during which Sea Island employees may visit for a cup of hot cider, seasonal goodies and enjoy the hope and joy of the season. The end of 2017 will be ushered out with a special service on

December 31 at 4pm. The chaplains and volunteers at YVR Chapel look forward

to welcoming everyone at one or more of the special seasonal events and services.

Harbour Air’s winter schedule update

Flying B.C.’s coast for 35 years, Harbour Air offers a unique west coast flight experience to more than 400,000 passengers annually.

During winter months, Harbour Air pauses its daily, seasonal schedule between Sechelt and downtown Vancouver. Flights for this seasonal service resume on March 5, 2018. During this time, Harbour Air will continue offering its year-round daily seaplane service between Sechelt and YVR’s South Terminal, as well as offering Sechelt to Nanaimo service. Harbour Air’s winter sched-

ule will offer up to three flights daily from YVR to Sechelt, with complimentary shuttle service to the Canada Line SkyTrain. The airline also offers up to three flights daily between Sechelt and Nanaimo Harbour, where Vancouver–bound passengers may connect with one of up to 10 daily departures between Nanaimo and downtown Vancouver. For more information, please visit harbourair.com.

Harbour Air celebrates 10 years of carbon neutrality Cadets will be on hand to participate in the special Remembrance Day service to be held at the “The Spirit of Haida Gwaii: The Jade Canoe” sculpture.

From December 11-29, YVR Chapel volunteers will offer hot cider and seasonal goodies at the annual seasonal Drop-In event.

Harbour Air Seaplanes is celebrating its 10-year anniversary as North America’s first carbon neutral airline. Committed to its B.C. roots, the airline partnered with local company Offsetters Climate Solutions in 2007 to begin calculating and offsetting the airline’s carbon footprint. Since then, Harbour Air has offset 100 per cent of its emissions associated with seaplane fuel use and corporate operations. Through this partnership,

Offsetters has measured and provided strategic recommendations to reduce Harbour Air’s footprint. The #FlyCarbonNeutral program has resulted in more than 108,000 tonnes of annual carbon offsets to date, fueling more than 10,000 cookstoves for families in Uganda and the protection of more than seven-million hectares of the Great Bear Rainforest. In addition, the airline has reduced its total emissions per revenue dollar by 21 per cent. Film+ Talks Music Workshops Conversations Celebrations

Air New Zealand is growing its Vancouver-Auckland operation by nearly 20 per cent from January to July 2018, providing customers with greater choice and flexibility. During the first half of the January peak period, the airline will increase services from seven to eight flights per week, making it easier than ever for

Canadians to escape the cold. Regional general manager Americas Nick Judd said this extra capacity is a direct result of the increased demand for travel in the South Pacific region and the importance of Vancouver in the Air New Zealand network. “This year marks 10 years since we launched our

Canadian service and increasing the frequency of our non-stop service between Vancouver and Auckland means our customers will have more travel options, which is great for Canadians wanting to discover all that New Zealand and Australia have to offer,” said Judd.

Airbus, Bombardier partnering towards new heights

Last month, Airbus and Bombardier announced their partnership on Bombardier’s C Series aircraft programme. The agreement brings together Airbus’ global reach and scale

with Bombardier’s newest, stateof-the-art jet aircraft family. Under the agreement, Airbus will provide procurement, sales and marketing, and customer support expertise to the C Series

Aircraft Limited Partnership (CSALP), the entity that manufactures and sells the C Series. Airbus will acquire a 50.01 per cent interest in CSALP. Bombardier and Investisse–

ment Québec (IQ) will own approximately 31 per cent and 19 per cent, respectively. CSALP’s headquarters and primary assembly line and related functions will remain in Québec.

Airbus’ global industrial footprint will expand with the Final Assembly Line in Canada and additional C Series production at Airbus’ manufacturing site in Alabama, U.S. Ranging from 100 to 150 seats, the C Series is complementary to Airbus’ existing single aisle aircraft portfolio, which focuses on the higher end of the single-aisle business (150-240 seats). The marketing and support networks that Airbus brings into the venture are expected to strengthen and accelerate the C Series’ commercial momentum. Additionally, Airbus’ supply chain expertise is expected to

generate significant C Series production cost savings. “We are very pleased to welcome Airbus to the C Series programme,” said Alain Bellemare, president and chief executive officer of Bombardier Inc. “Airbus is the perfect partner for us, Québec and Canada. Their global scale, strong customer relationships and operational expertise are key ingredients for unleashing the full value of the C Series. This partnership should more than double the value of the C Series programme and ensures our remarkable gamechanging aircraft realizes its full potential.”

Last month, the first of three Airbus 330neo Family development aircraft successfully completed its first flight. Airbus has developed a fastpaced development programme from launch to first A330neo delivery. This will include 1,100 flight hours for the A330-900 to achieve European and U.S. certification around the middle of 2018. An additional 300 flight hours is also allocated for the A330-800’s own certification flight-test campaign. Overall, the full flight-test campaigns for both models will be performed by two A330-900s and one A330-800, respectively. Launched in July 2014, the A330neo is the latest generation in Airbus’ A330 product line, comprising two versions—the A330-800 and A330-900. Both widebody aircraft incorporate new RollsRoyce Trent 7000 engines, nacelle, titanium pylon, new

wings and an Airspace by Airbus cabin. The most visible new features of the A330neo are the new wing span extensions to 64 metres total and the specially developed curved wingtip Sharklets, which draw on A350 XWB technology. Less visible is the implementation of enhanced 3D-optimised aerodynamic refinements along the overall wing profile. Both the A330-800 and the A330-900 will accommodate up to 10 more passengers than their respective predecessors because of new Airspace interiors that introduce various cabin enablers to free-up more usable cabin space. The larger A330-900 will accommodate up to 287 seats in a typical three-class layout, while the A330-800 typically will seat 257 passengers in three classes. To date 12 customers have placed orders for a total of 212 A330neos.

IATA forecasts near-double increase of air passenger traffic by 2036 The International Air Transport Association (IATA), which represents some 275 airlines comprising 83 per cent of global air traffic, is forecasting 7.8-billion passengers to travel in 2036, a near doubling of the 4-billion air travellers expected to fly this year. According to IATA, the biggest driver of demand will be the Asia-Pacific region, which will be the source of more than half the new passengers over the next two decades. The point at which China will displace the United States as the world’s largest aviation market (defined as traffic to, from and within the country) has moved two years closer since IATA’s 2016 forecast. This is now anticipated to occur around 2022, through a combination of slightly faster Chinese growth and slightly reduced growth in the U.S. IATA forecasts the five fastest-growing markets in terms of annual additional passengers in 2036 compared to 2016 will be: • China (921-million new passengers for a total of 1.5 billion) • U.S. (401-million new passengers for a total of 1.1 billion) • India (337-million new passengers for a total of 478 million) • Indonesia (235-million new passengers for a total of 355 million) • Turkey (119-million new passengers for a total of 196 million) “All indicators lead to growing demand for global connectivity,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s director general and CEO. “The world needs to prepare for a doubling of passengers in the next 20 years. It’s fantastic news for innovation and prosperity, which is driven by air links. It is also a huge challenge for governments and industry to ensure we can

successfully meet this essential demand.” Maximizing the potential benefits of IATA’s aviation growth forecast will depend on current levels of trade liberalization and visa facilitation being maintained. If moves towards liberalization increase, annual growth could be more than two percentage points faster, leading to a tripling in passengers over the next 20 years. Conversely, if trade protectionism and travel restrictions are put in place, the benefits of air connectivity will decline as growth could slow to 2.7 per cent—1.1-billion fewer passenger journeys annually in 2036. Planning for growth will require partnerships to be strengthened between the aviation industry, communities and governments to expand and modernize infrastructure. “Increasing demand will bring a significant infrastructure challenge,” said de Juniac. “The solution does not lie in more complex processes or building bigger and bigger airports, but in harnessing the power of new technology to move activity off-airport, streamline processes and improve efficiency. Through partnerships within the industry and beyond, we are confident that sustainable solutions for continued growth can be found.” In the face of this forecasted increase in air travel, the aviation industry’s robust strategy to reduce its environmental impacts, particularly its carbon emissions, is crucial. “No industry has done more to meet its environmental obligations than aviation,” said de Juniac. “Our tough targets to achieve carbon-neutral growth from 2020 and to cut our CO2 emissions to half-2005 levels by 2050 are backed by a comprehensive strategy. Our immediate

aims are to work with governments to increase the production of sustainable aviation fuels and to deliver air traffic management efficiencies, which promise significant emissions savings. And from 2020, a Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) will play a major role in meeting our carbon-neutral target.” Regional growth • Routes to, from and within Asia-Pacific will see some extra 2.1-billion annual passengers by 2036, for an overall market size of 3.5-billion. Its annual average growth rate of 4.6 per cent will be the thirdhighest, behind Africa and the Middle East. • The North American region will grow by 2.3 per cent annually and in 2036 will carry a total of 1.2-billion passengers, an additional 452 million passengers per year. • Europe will also grow at 2.3 per cent and will add some additional 550-million passengers a year. The total market will be 1.5-billion passengers. • Latin American markets will grow by 4.2 per cent, serving a total of 757-million passengers, some additional 421-million passengers annually compared to today. • The Middle East will grow by 5 per cent, adding 322-million passengers a year on routes to, from and within the region by 2036. The total market size will be 517-million passengers. • Africa will grow by 5.9 per cent. By 2036 it will see some extra 274-million passengers a year for a total market of 400-million passengers. IATA launches Face-Up competition for air transport logistics graduates The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has launched Face-Up—a competition for recent graduates to present their thesis at the 2018 World Cargo Symposium (WCS) in Dallas, Texas. To be eligible, graduates must have a thesis topic about air transport logistics (e.g. air cargo, supply chain management, mobility, IT solutions, etc.). Face-Up finalists will present to more than 1,200 top-level industry professionals at WCS. As well as being a unique net-

working opportunity, the event will also provide a valuable chance to gain knowledge and build a better understanding of all elements across the air cargo supply chain. “The idea is to bring fresh energy into the air cargo industry by offering opportunities that will assist the professional development of talented graduates with a passion for the industry,” said Glyn Hughes, IATA’s global head of cargo. “Air cargo is growing at an impressive rate and we want young people to be a part of unlocking and benefit-

ting from this potential.” A senior panel of judges from across the industry will choose the three finalists, who will present at the WCS closing plenary where the audience will nominate the ultimate winner of the FaceUp competition. The winning thesis will not only show innovation but also the potential to transform air cargo. The closing date for entries is January 19, 2018. TSA begins enhanced screening on U.S.-bound flights Last month, the U.S. Transportation Security Admin– istration (TSA) begun implementing stronger screening procedures for carry-on items. The new procedures, which were announced earlier this year, require travellers to place all electronics larger than a cell phone in bins for x-ray screening in standard lanes. Travellers are asked to remove electronics larger than a cell phone from their carry-on bags and place them in a bin with nothing on top or below, similarly to the way in which laptops have been screened for years. This simple step helps

TSA officers obtain a clearer x-ray image. Passengers will experience a bag check if they fail to follow this procedure, which will slow screening for them and everyone else on line. In standard screening lanes, TSA officers will be stationed in front of the checkpoint x-ray machines to guide passengers through the screening process and recommend how best to arrange their carry-on items for x-ray screening. Travellers are encouraged to organize their carry-on bags and keep them uncluttered to ease the

screening process and keep the lines moving. There are no changes to the items that travellers may bring through the checkpoint; food and liquid items that comply with the 3-1-1 liquids rule, electronics, and books continue to be allowed in carry-on bags. As always, TSA suggests passengers arrive at the airport two hours prior to their scheduled departure time to allow adequate time to navigate the ticketing, baggage and security screening processes. The new security measures do not apply to passengers enrolled in TSA PreCheck who are using TSA PreCheck lanes.

Transport Canada announces changes to Prohibited Items List Effective November 27, 2017, Transport Canada is amending its Prohibited Items List for passengers on all flights—domestic and international. Transport Canada will prohibit certain powders and granular material with a volume of 350 millimetres (the size of a soda can) or more at all screening checkpoints in Canada. Prohibited material includes

items such as bath salts, sea salt, baby powder, foot powder, cooking powder and sand. Items such as baby formula, protein powder, tea and coffee will still be permitted in any quantity. Consistent with international practice, Transport Canada will also amend the list so that very small knife blades (6 centimetres or less—about the size of a large

paper clip) will not be prohibited on domestic or international flights. To respect Canada’s security screening agreement with the United States, knife blades of any length will remain prohibited on flights to the United States through preclearance facilities. Razor blades and box cutters of any size will remain prohibited at all screening checkpoints.

Happier holidays made possible with YVR and Quest’s Hamper Drive

This year’s annual hamper collection event will take place on December 7 from 11am until 3pm.

Each year, YVR partners with Quest Food Exchange to encourage the Sea Island community to get into the giving spirit and fill a hamper with all the ingredients needed to make a complete holiday meal. Quest Food Exchange works to reduce hunger in local communities by providing affordable and sustainable food options in not-for-profit grocery markets to those who face food security challenges in B.C. As Quest’s official transportation sponsor, YVR helps with the collection and distribution of surplus food and goods, to help deliver these resources where they are most needed.

Over the past six years, more than 3,000 hampers have been collected for families. This year’s 7th annual YVR Holiday Hamper Drive will run from November 16 to December 7, 2017. For every hamper donated, YVR will donate a fresh turkey to complete the holiday meal. Following is a list of items required to complete each hamper: 2 Cans of Soup 2 Cans of Vegetables 1 Can of Cranberry Sauce 2 Packets of Instant Gravy 2 Boxes of Stuffing Mix 2 Boxes of Instant Mashed Potatoes 2 Boxes of Crackers

1 Box of Cookies 1 Box of Granola Bars 1 Box of Chocolates Completed hampers will be collected at a hamper collection event on December 7, 2017 from 11am until 3pm, which will be held at International Departures Level 3 at the Spirit of Haida Gwaii: The Jade Canoe. This celebration will feature delicious treats, a festive photo booth and the chance to win prizes for those who participated. Please send an email to community_relations@yvr.ca if you would like to participate in filling a hamper. Find out more information about the Holiday Hamper Drive at yvr.ca/HamperDrive.

Data shows travel choices of Boomers, Millennials & Gen Z demographic

Close to one-million people visit the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu annually.

According to data released by Expedia Media Solutions, the media arm of the Expedia Travel group, there is a stark difference in the travel choices made by Canadian Baby Boomers compared with those who fall in the Millennial and Generation Z demographic. The research found that Gen Z and Millennials choose destinations from their personal bucket list and embrace the “you only live once” (YOLO) mentality, while Baby Boomers enjoy worry-free, all-inclusive resorts and cruises. “Interestingly, we saw a lot of similarities among the generations of Canadian travellers than we did in other countries, which is good news for marketers looking to attract this audience,” said Wendy Olson Killion, global senior director at Expedia Media Solutions. “Marketers can efficiently reach a broader Canadian audience by highlighting activities and price through appealing imagery and deals, which are important to all generations.”

Boomers Baby Boomers—those born between 1946 and 1964—make up a substantial portion of the world’s population, particularly in developed nations. Compared to other generations, Baby Boomers travel the most (28 days a year) and nearly 50 per cent have already decided on a destination when they decide to take a trip. They are more likely to choose an international getaway than stay within their own borders and are also quite adventurous once they get to their destination of choice. Millennials Millennials, also known as Generation Y (1982-2004) travel 26 days a year and are most likely to travel by air as they prefer to explore international destinations (65 per cent). Tackling their bucket list, embracing YOLO experiences and finding off-thebeaten path locations rank high in importance. Millennials also look to fill their itinerary with museums, historical sites, arts and culture more than other generations

(71 per cent). Generation Z According to Expedia’s research, Gen Z (1996-2012) travels 21 days a year and although they have a budget in mind when planning a trip, they are the most open-minded when it comes to destination inspiration. Visiting family is the most popular trip type (52 per cent), followed by relaxing and sightseeing trips. At 25 per cent, Gen Z is more likely than other generations to travel to unique concert or sporting events. A significant aspect of this generation is the widespread usage of the Internet from an early age, as a result they rely more on search engines and online travel agencies for planning and booking. Gen Z prioritizes activities and rank highest in the YOLO mindset (81 per cent). They value visiting destinations where they can explore the outdoors and be active (84 per cent). Travel Talk Lonely Planet publishes its best travel destinations for 2018

Lonely Planet, one of the world’s leading travel media authorities, has released its Best in Travel 2018, a collection of what its experts recommend as the hottest destinations that should be on every traveller’s wish list in the year ahead. Available in hardback for the first time, Best in Travel 2018 contains selections of the top 10 countries, cities, regions and bestvalue destinations. Countries Chile, the South American country occupying a long, narrow strip of land between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean, takes the coveted top spot of the best country for travellers to visit in 2018. The other top 10 countries are: South Korea, Portugal, Djibouti, New Zealand, Malta, Georgia, Mauritius, China and South Africa. Cities Spain’s Seville received the accolade of number one city in the world to visit. Lonely Planet’s editors describe it as a city that “disarms and seduces,” with an intoxicating mix of palaces, churches and medieval lanes. Comeback city Detroit and Australia’s oft-overlooked capital Canberra were number two and three, respectively. The other top 10 cities named were Hamburg, Germany; Kaohsiung, Taiwan;

are Julian Alps, Slovenia; Languedoc-Roussillon, France; Kii Peninsula, Japan; Aeolian Islands, Italy; Southern U.S.; Lahaul & Spiti, India; Bahia, Brazil; Los Haitises National Park, Dominican Republic. Best-Value Destinations Heading the list of bestvalue destinations is Tallinn, Estonia, closely followed by Lanzarote in the Canary Islands and Arizona in the U.S. Completing the list is La Paz, Bolivia; Poland; Essaouira, Morocco; the U.K.; Baja California, Mexico; Jacksonville, Florida; Hunan, China. Deciding what destinations to include in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel annual selection is a considered process involving Lonely Planet’s most experienced travellers, who provide hundreds of recommendations of places not to be missed. These places are then shortlisted by a panel of in-house travel experts who consider criteria such as topicality, novelty and wow-factor to decide what to include in the inspirational travel yearbook. Best in Travel 2018 is available on Lonely Planet Shop at lonelyplanet.com, Amazon and wherever books are sold.

Antwerp, Belgium; Matera, Italy; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Guanajuato, Mexico; and Oslo, Norway. “While Puerto Rico’s capital was hit hard by the hurricane [Maria] last month, San Juan’s resiliency will have it back on its feet for travellers in 2018,” said Bailey Freeman, Lonely Planet’s Central America and Caribbean destination editor. Regions The region declared the number one must-see is Belfast and the Causeway Coast in Northern Ireland. Belfast boasts the world’s largest Titanic visitor experience and, along with the Causeway Coast and other areas in Northern Ireland, is the principal film location of the epic TV series Game of Thrones. Other regions on the list

Delta now hiring more than 1,000 flight attendants

LATTIMER GALLERY YVR is located before security on the third floor of Vancouver Airport’s International Departures area. Easily accessible by Skytrain and no security clearance required. Lattimer Gallery YVR is hiring for part-time and full-time cashier positions. Evenings and weekends will be required. Applicants must possess retail experience, customer service experience, and an interest in First Nations art and culture. Please submit your résumé and cover letter to: info@lattimergallery.com.

Last year, 150,000 applicants applied for roughly 1,200 coveted flight attendant jobs at Delta. After reviewing 35,000 video interviews and conducting 6,000 in-person interviews, fewer than one per cent of applicants were selected. With a 5.1 per cent acceptance rate at Harvard University in 2016, it appears to be statistically easier to get into an Ivy League school than to become a Delta flight attendant. “Earning and wearing the wings of Delta is something our flight attendants are proud of and passionate about, as they should be,” said Allison Ausband, Delta’s senior vice president, inflight service. “After making it through the highly competitive and exhaustive selection process, they put all their previous experi-

ence and skills to the test during our flight attendant initial training.” Delta currently has more than 1,000 open position for 2018 and is seeking dedicated, service-oriented flight attendants who love to be on-the-go, help others and enjoy variety in their work. To give top talent a better understanding of just what it takes to join the best in the business, Delta has launched the Earning our Wings mini-series. A new episode will post each Monday and Thursday to YouTube and the Delta News Hub for 10 weeks, chronicling the journey of five new hires as they make their way through the eight-week training program each new flight attendant must complete at Delta’s Atlanta headquarters. “There’s no doubt we hire the best of the best because the caliber of people wanting to work for our great airline is top-notch,” said Ausband. “They see that what makes Delta different is our people and the unique culture we share together, and they want to be part of that winning team.” From CPR to putting out (literal) fires and water evacuations to Delta One meal presentation, these new recruits will be put to the test. With the support of their teammates, they will have to find it in themselves to accomplish each of the challenges they face. In the end, will they have what it takes to represent Delta and earn their wings? Applicants must have a high school degree or GED, the ability to work in the U.S., English fluency and be at least 21 years of

age by Jan. 1, 2018. Since Delta flights operate day and night, year-round, flight attendants must work a flexible schedule. The best résumés will include: • More than one year of work experience in a personalized customer service, patient care or similar role • Experience in a role ensuring the safety and/or care of others (teacher, military, EMT, firefighter, coach, law enforcement, lifeguard, nurse, etc.) • Education beyond high school • Fluency in a language other than English. These applicants are considered for “Language of Destination” flight attendant roles, which offer additional pay as well as special responsibilities The full list of responsibilities is available at delta.com.

Alaska Air Cargo’s flies world’s first converted 737-700 freighter Alaska Air Cargo has begun a new chapter in its business, introducing the first converted Boeing 737-700 cargo aircraft. The aircraft is the first of its kind in the world and was converted from an all-passenger to an all-freight aircraft. “With an all-freight fleet, our cargo business is now a standalone operation, allowing us to better focus on the needs of our cargo customers,” said Wayne Newton, Alaska Airlines vice president of airport operations and customer service. The aircraft was converted over 19 months in Tel Aviv by Israel Aerospace Industries. Alaska will take delivery of two more converted 737-700 freighters, allowing the new, allcargo fleet to carry 15 per cent more capacity overall. Previously, Alaska operated one 737-400 freighter and four 737-400 combi aircraft that carried both passengers and cargo. The airline retired its entire 737-400 combi fleet last month. “The new freighter will transform our cargo business and allow us to provide more efficient and consistent service,” said Jason Berry, Alaska Air Cargo managing director. “Now we

can move more freight than ever before and optimize schedules to meet the needs of our cargo partners.”

KLM and Costa Rica begin unique cooperation to make aviation more sustainable.

KLM and the government of Costa Rica have begun a unique cooperation initiative to combat carbon dioxide emissions. This is the first time that an airline has entered into an agreement of this kind with a country. In the months to come, KLM will share its knowledge and expertise with the Costa Rican government in close cooperation with its partner SkyNRG. KLM founded SkyNRG and initiated the KLM Corporate BioFuel Programme to stimulate the demand for sustainable biofuel. With the help of this

cooperative effort, KLM has been partially operating all its flights from Los Angeles with sustainable biofuel since 2012. KLM is the only European airline operating intercontinental flights using biofuel. By using sustainable biofuel, KLM can reduce its CO2 emissions by as much as 80 per cent compared to fossil fuels. However, the market for sustainable biofuel is far from mature, which is reflected in a price that is still three times higher than that of fossil fuel. KLM purchases biofuels

made only from raw materials that have no negative environmental impact on biodiversity or food production. KLM currently uses sustainable biofuel made from used cooking oil (UCO). Over the coming months, KLM and the government of Costa Rica will research the possibilities of flying from San Jose using bio-based jet fuel. Currently, sustainable aviation fuel is the most effective way to reduce CO2 emissions and, in so doing, to make civil aviation more sustainable.

Developed by the Fokker company of the Netherlands, the Fokker 70 narrow-body, twin-engined turbofan aircraft first flew in July 1994.

Last month, the last six commercial flights operated by KLM’s venerable Fokker 70 aircraft took to the skies. KLM deployed its first two Fokker II aircraft on September 30, 1920. These were the airline’s first passenger planes and the first destination was London, England. It was therefore no coincidence that the final flight departed from London, landing at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in special farewell livery—a classic portrait of Dutch aviation pioneer and aircraft

manufacturer Anthony Fokker. With its characteristic wing profile and typical T-shaped tail, the Fokker 70 is a striking and unique aircraft. The Fokker aircraft that have retired from KLM’s fleet will continue to operate elsewhere, having been sold to airlines in Asia, Africa and South America. A special KLM-Fokker monument has been unveiled at Schiphol airport, marking the end of a 97-year partnership between KLM and Fokker aircraft.

Global travellers weigh in on flying etiquette

British Airways recently polled travellers across the U.S., U.K., Germany, France and Italy to address the biggest plane etiquette dilemmas facing fliers today. Some of the topics that proved to be the most contentious were: Should you take your shoes and socks off? Who owns the armrest? Should you engage in pillow talk with your seat mate? What are the rules about waking a sleeping neighbour? British Airways has translated the feedback into an unofficial rulebook for how to successfully navigate your next flight. Who really owns the armrest? Sixty-seven per cent of those surveyed say the proper etiquette is to take one armrest and leave the other for your neighbour. When it comes to being in the middle seat, British (47 per cent) and American fliers (42 per cent) are more likely to try and claim both armrests for themselves, whereas close to half of all the respondents from Italy, France and Germany politely said the middle armrests should go to whomever asks for them. Does the Shoe Fit? Travellers overwhelmingly agree it’s unacceptable to remove your socks in-flight, with 87 per cent saying it shouldn’t be done. Removing shoes is more acceptable, however, with 59 per cent of all travellers surveyed saying it’s fine to kick them off. In general, when travelling through Italy, be aware Italians are the most opposed to wardrobe changes, with 75 per cent saying it’s unacceptable to

remove shoes. The Climb Over: How to get by your neighbour? When the person in the aisle seat is sleeping and you need the restroom, 80 per cent of travellers say it’s okay to wake your neighbour for a toilet break, but 40 per cent say you can do so only once per flight. One-third of all travellers said they would step over a heavy sleeper to get out but were torn on which way to climb across. Americans were split down the middle but global etiquette dictates you make a faceto-face exit (the marginal winner at 54 per cent). Pillow Talk: To chat or not to chat? Eight-three per cent of travellers agree that a quick hello and a smile is appropriate behaviour. Forty-two per cent of U.S. travellers say it’s unacceptable to share personal stories and the polite way to get out of a conversation is to thank the person and put on headphones. U.K. travellers recommend taking a toilet break with the hope a chatty seat mate gets the message. Italians are a more talkative group, with 80 per cent thinking small talk is appropriate and half of French respondents viewed a flight as a potential way to meet a new friend. The survey also revealed some other interesting preferences when it comes to sleeping next to a stranger.

Sixty-six per cent said they won’t nudge a snoring neighbour, instead they will try to ignore it and turn up the volume on their entertainment. However, 20 per cent of U.K. travellers take a different approach; they are willing to give their neighbour a shove and pretend it was an accident. Sixty-seven per cent of all travellers say a pillow helps them sleep better on a plane. Noise is also a concern with 45 per cent of Americans stating they need noise-cancelling headphones to fall asleep. Italians and the French are more concerned about having an eye mask to get some shut eye. Germans are the most likely to bring a comfort from home and have a routine planned out to sleep well in flight. When it comes to switching seats, 53 per cent find it only appropriate to do so after confirming it’s okay with the cabin crew. Brits are the most likely to find a new seat, with 38 per cent saying they will do so right after takeoff, once the seatbelt sign has been turned off. British Airways’ inflight experience team has a variety of tips to help with a peaceful flight: • Switch iPads, phones and laptops to night mode or dim the brightness on the screen to help your own eyes adjust and

reduce impact on others. • Prepare your own environment to minimize external environmental factors—eye shades, ear buds or headphones, a lot of thin layers of clothing to easily adjust to the temperature. • Look for relaxation music and calming TV channels to unwind. Avoid coffee and consider herbal tea instead. • Keep your feet warm with an extra pair of soft, comfortable socks. Cold feet can inhibit sleep. • Consider light snacks such as bananas or nuts to aid in restful sleep.

Canada 150 sculpture unveiled at Richmond City Hall

“Fraser Giant” stylized sturgeon sculpture at Richmond City Hall celebrates the significance of the region’s maritime heritage. Photo: courtesy City of Richmond.

Richmond City Hall is now the home of Fraser Giant, a new six-metre-long stainless-steel sculpture that depicts a sturgeon. This stylized artwork is a metaphor for the Fraser River and celebrates its significance to the region’s maritime heritage. The sculpture was created by Saskatoon artists Henry Lau and David Geary in acknowledgement of Canada’s 150th anniversary of confederation. The majestic white sturgeons of the Fraser River are the last truly wild population of this species in the world, having survived two ice-ages. These fish can live for more than 150 years and grow to more than six metres in length.

The white sturgeon lives year-round in the lower Fraser River and is one of the oldest and largest freshwater species in North America. Unfortunately, the population of white sturgeon here is now a mere fraction of its historic levels and its future existence is in some doubt. This legacy artwork is a symbol of longevity, resilience and hope. It will become part of the City of Richmond’s civic artworks collection and will be on permanent display in the south garden of Richmond City Hall (6911 No.3 Road) facing Granville Avenue. For more information about the Richmond Public Art Program, visit richmond.ca/publicart.

2018 Subaru Crosstrek The name has stayed the same, everything else has changed—Subaru’s 2018 Crosstrek is all-new, from the ground up, inside and out and from top to bottom. The changes include a new platform with a new suspension system. A new Subaru Boxer engine and new transmissions. A redesigned exterior. And a more spacious, more comfortable and more connected passenger cabin. The value-packed Crosstrek comes with all the benefits of a true crossover—generous ground

clearance, ample cargo space, excellent versatility. These are combined with the advantages of a sporty hatch— crisp response, superior handling, stellar fuel efficiency. And with standard Subaru symmetrical full-time AWD, drivers have the unique ability to escape from it all at a moment’s notice. Subaru’s Crosstrek lineup includes Base, Premium and Limited trim levels, all equipped with a four-cylinder engine and standard all-wheel drive (AWD). The vehicle is offered as a

six-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with seven programmed ratios. The vehicle’s 2-litre flat-four boxer engine produces 152 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque and works well with both transmissions. The 2018 Subaru Crosstrek ranges from $23,695 to $33,195, depending on trim and options chosen. This is a compact and capable crossover, packed with substantial value that works as well in the city as it does off-road.

Batteries and alternator systems An automotive battery is a rechargeable device that supplies electrical energy to a motor vehicle, its main purpose being to start the vehicle’s engine. The battery also allows accessories to be run with the engine off and provides reserve electrical power should the vehicle’s charging system be weak. Every time the vehicle’s engine is started, the battery sends power to the starter motor, which turns the engine over until the spark plugs spark and the fuel begins to combust. This process depletes the battery’s energy and continuing to attempt to start the car will eventually result in a dead battery. Enter the alternator, the purpose of which is to generate electricity to recharge the battery. So why call it an alternator when it really is a generator? Up until the early 1960s, most cars used a direct current generator. It was found that an alternator, which converts mechanical energy to electrical energy in the form of alternating current, was far more efficient, reliable and used fewer parts. Automobiles contains many electricity-hungry components such as lights, ignition system, fuel injection, windshield wipers, heater fans, etc. These require feeding, which is done with the alternator, otherwise the battery Solution for October 2017 Crossword.

would go dead. Let’s look at the inner workings of the battery and the alternator. The battery in a vehicle stores electricity in a remarkable way. Car batteries are of the lead-acid type that use lead plates and sulfuric acid. The chemical reaction between these two components creates electricity. As the battery discharges, its sulfuric acid breaks up and attaches to the lead plates leaving water behind. As the battery is recharged, the sulfur leaves the plates and becomes reunited with the water to form sulfuric acid once again. This dance goes on until the battery becomes old and weak. While batteries store electricity, alternators are used in modern automobiles to charge the battery

and power the electrical system when the engine is running. The voltage output of the alternator would soon overload the electrical system if it wasn’t for the voltage regulator, which keeps the output down to about 14 volts. What maintenance do the battery and alternator require? The alternator and most batteries require no maintenance—some batteries may be topped up with water if the level runs low. Battery terminals may become corroded and these should be inspected and cleaned if dirty. Otherwise, it is a trouble-free system. The alternator is belt-driven so the belt needs to be inspected occasionally and replaced if worn. They usually last about seven years or every 128,000 kilometres.
