On December 1, 2017, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) celebrated the inaugural flight of Air Canada’s new route between YVR and Melbourne Airport (MEL), marking the first-ever direct, non-stop flight from Canada to this Australian city. The new Melbourne route offers a seasonal four-time weekly service until February 4, 2018. With existing services to Sydney and Brisbane, the new Melbourne service is Air Canada’s third route to Australia from YVR. In addition to the new Melbourne service, Air Canada will also be launching new routes to Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Yellowknife Airport (YZF)

this month. All flights are strategically timed to connect with Air Canada’s domestic and international schedule at YVR. Operated by Air Canada Rouge on a Boeing 767300 ER aircraft, the YVRMCO route can accommodate 279 passengers and will create almost 40 new jobs as well as contribute

$2.7-million in GDP. The YVR-YZF route will use a Bombardier CRJ 705-900 aircraft, with seat capacity for 75 passengers. “We have a lot to celebrate at YVR this month,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “With the new Air Canada services to Melbourne,

Orlando and Yellowknife in December, passengers have even more travel options this winter season. We are also thrilled that Air Canada has announced year-round service to Melbourne, prior to the start of the seasonal service. This is an incredible achievement for our airline partner and showcases Air Canada’s

commitment to growing their transpacific hub at YVR.” The YVR-MEL route operates on an Air Canada Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft with seat capacity for 298 passengers. The new service creates 60 new jobs at the airport and contributes $4.7-million to B.C.’s GDP. “We are delighted to welcome customers onboard our flights to Melbourne, our newest destination in Australia,” said Benjamin Smith, president – passenger airlines at Air Canada. “Our seasonal service will be of particular interest to Australians travelling for a Canadian winter vacation and North Americans travelling to enjoy Australia’s summer season.” See MELBOURNE page 2

Global airline alliance SkyTeam has opened its first lounge in the Americas at YVR and its seventh worldwide. YVR celebrates with Air Canada the launch of Canada’s first direct, non-stop service to Melbourne, Australia.

“The launch of year-round service next June will provide additional options for business and leisure travellers between our two continents,” said Smith. “Our Melbourne flights complement our daily flights from Canada to Sydney and to Brisbane, solidifying our market-leading position as the airline providing the most service between Canada and Australia. The seamless connections through in-transit preclearance facilities, combined with our extensive domestic

Canada and U.S. network at our Vancouver hub, positions YVR to be the preferred transpacific gateway for business and leisure travellers travelling between North America and Australia.” In addition to these three new services, Air Canada introduced service to Dallas in February, Denver in May and increased service to Los Angeles and San Jose to six- and three-times daily, respectively. In the summer, Air Canada also launched the following

international routes out of YVR: Taipei, Nagoya, Frankfurt and London Gatwick. Air Canada’s significant growth at YVR is made possible because of YVR’s five-year rates and charges program, ConnectYVR. The program provides a highly competitive rate structure and includes airline rates lower than any other major airport in Canada and competing U.S. airports. As part of Vancouver Airport Authority’s commitment to sustainability, pre-construction work at its Value Lot will included the relocation of 90 trees to other Sea Island areas.

With record passenger growth in 2016, YVR’s current facilities are nearing capacity. As a result, it is undergoing multi-year expansion projects to enhance the airport experience and ensure that future demand is met. As part of the expansion plan, YVR is developing a variety of new parking options to improve capacity, efficiency and customer satisfaction. In 2018, the Value Lot will close to make room for a new parkade. A new long-term parking option, currently under construction near Templeton Station on the Canada Line, will open to replace the existing offering. Preparing the land for construction will necessitate removal of trees around the current Value

Lot. Given YVR’s commitment to be a leader in sustainability, conserving healthy plant life was a crucial component of the preconstruction work. YVR commissioned Enns Gauthier and Connect LA, two leading landscape architect firms, to conduct a comprehensive study of the trees around the Value Lot. Based on their assessment, 90 trees were identified as candidates for relocation. Over the next month, crews will work to relocate the selected trees either to the new parking lot near Templeton station or to a nursery along Miller Road. YVR is making every effort to reduce the impact of construction on people travelling to and from Sea Island. As part of the

project, a small number of parking stalls will be vacated in the Value Lot and there will be lane closures in the area. The work will occur be between 9pm and 6am to avoid any major disruptions and is expected to be completed by the end of December 2018. To learn more about other projects, please visit YVR’s recently launched construction page at yvr.ca/construction. This site will be updated regularly with all the latest project information, timelines and eventually real-time impacts, such as traffic pattern changes, so that visitors to the airport know what to expect when travelling through the airport. An overview of this month’s construction update is also on this page.

Seasonal events at YVR Chapel This month, the YVR Chapel will be hosting unique events to celebrate the holidays with the Sea Island community and airport visitors. Starting December 11-29, the Chapel will host seasonal drop-in events during which hot cider and homemade goodies will be on offer in celebration of the season. The Chapel encourages visitors to participate in “Bridging the Gap” for the Chapel to finish the year strongly. Hanukkah, the eight-day Jewish “Festival of Lights,” will be led on Wednesday December 13 from 2:30pm to 4:30pm by a local rabbi. This remembrance of a momentous event is open to those of Jewish faith and any interested persons wishing to discover more of its meaning. The Advent season of hope, peace, joy and love will culminate with Christmas Eve Mass, which will be celebrated on Sunday, December 24 at 4pm, led by a local Roman Catholic priest. On Sunday December 31 at 4pm, a special New Year’s Eve Mass will be celebrated at 4pm. All are welcome to attend these special services. In 2018, the Chapel will offer a new Team Building event on Saturday, January 20 from 1pm

hear about YVR’s plans for the New Year, including news about the Chapel. There will be several outstanding raffle prizes, including a night at the Vancouver Airport Fairmont Hotel. Change is in the air at YVR: Monthly construction update

Paving and infrastructure installation for YVR’s new long-term parking lot is taking place near the Templeton Canada Line Station on Sea Island.

YVR is experiencing unprecedented growth and is well-positioned to meet and exceed its goal of serving 25-million passengers by 2020. Longer-term forecasts estimate 35-million passengers will travel through YVR annually by 2037. This growth will require significant changes to the airport. There are several key projects starting in the coming months that will enhance the airport experience. This includes its biggest sustainability projects to date, new parking options, terminal expansions and much more. Some current projects that will begin on Sea Island this month include: • Paving and infrastructure installation taking place near the Templeton Canada Line Station as crews prepare YVR’s new long-term parking lot. This parking lot will provide more options for customers and will replace the current Value Lot scheduled to close in 2018. • Trees being removed and relocated around the Value Lot to the new parking lot

near Templeton station and a nursery along Miller Road. More information about this project and YVR’s sustainability efforts can be found on this page. • Passengers travelling to the U.S. may be temporarily rerouted around the walkthrough Duty Free Store for in-store ceiling and tile work to be completed. • Hoarding is in place around carousels 22 and 23 in the customs hall. Work is being completed to increase space for CATSA Plus, a high-performance security screening system. • Hoarding will be erected later in the month near gates D55 and D58 for a terminal expansion project to help increase capacity. “These airport enhancements will ensure YVR remains a strong economic generator for the province of British Columbia and we appreciate the public’s patience as we work to deliver a better airport for everyone,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. Air New Zealand is growing its Vancouver-Auckland operation by nearly 20 per cent from January to July 2018, providing customers with greater choice and flexibility. During the first half of the January peak period, the airline will increase services from seven to eight flights per week, making it easier than ever for

Canadians to escape the cold. Regional general manager Americas Nick Judd said this extra capacity is a direct result of the increased demand for travel in the South Pacific region and the importance of Vancouver in the Air New Zealand network. “This year marks 10 years since we launched our

Canadian service and increasing the frequency of our non-stop service between Vancouver and Auckland means our customers will have more travel options, which is great for Canadians wanting to discover all that New Zealand and Australia have to offer,” said Judd.

grow the carinata seed, a nonfood, industrial type of mustard seed that produces high-quality oil ideal for renewable aviation jet fuel and renewable diesel fuel. Carinata is a ‘drop-in’ crop that uses little water and requires no specialized production or processing techniques. It is sown either in fallow areas where crops fail or in-between regular crop cycles, known as cover cropping. Rotational or cover cropping improves soil quality, reduces erosion for food crops and provides farmers with additional annual income. The Australian plan is based upon Agrisoma’s current commercial production of carinata that is being grown in the USA and South America to supply the European renewable fuels market and non-GMO animal feed demand. “Our long-term goal with this partnership is to grow the crop at a target of 400,000 hectares which will ultimately produce more than 200-million litres of bio jet fuel for the airline,” said Steven Fabijanski, Agrisoma’s president and CEO. To demonstrate the benefits of Agrisoma’s bio-fuel, Qantas will operate the world’s first biofuel flight between the United States and Australia in 2018. “We are constantly looking for ways to reduce carbon emissions across our operations, but when it comes to using renewable jet fuel, until n ow, there has not been a locally grown option at the scale we need to power our fleet,” said Alison Webster, CEO Qantas International. Renewable jet fuel is chemically equivalent to and meets the same technical, performance and safety standards as conventional jet fuel.

‘Little Inventors: Inventions for Space’ project blasts off Last month, in partnership with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) launched the next edition of Little Inventors: Inventions for Space. This is a Canada-wide initiative that challenges children to devise ingenious ideas that could be developed into an invention to make life in space easier and more fun. The best inventions will be turned into prototypes and showcased in a special exhibition as part of Science Literacy Week in September 2018. The most imaginative and innovative inventions could make an appearance in space with Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques when he travels to the International Space Station in November of 2018. Since its inauguration in 2015 in the U.K., the Little Inventors project has inspired children all around the world and sparked their imaginations and use of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) knowledge. In 2016, NSERC partnered with Little Inventors for the first Canadian experience. It was a hit with children and teachers alike:

more than 500 designs were submitted, 18 of which were brought to life and exhibited coast to coast, including their current location at the Ontario Science Centre. Two Little Inventors even met the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, at a special science fair! Little Inventors: Inventions for Space is open to all students across Canada up to 15 years of age. Canadian schools and teachers are encouraged to lead the development of ideas in their classrooms and lead their stu-

dents through the challenge. Fun and interactive lesson plans and workshop materials are available online for all interested schools and parents. The deadline to participate in this space challenge is midnight Friday, April 13, 2018. If you are a teacher or interested in exploring the theme of space with Little Inventors, visit nserc.littleinventors.org for additional information on how to participate, or send your questions to littleinventors@nserc-crsng. gc.ca.

Canadian health experiments and biotechnological devices to be using during 2018 space mission In November 2018, Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques will launch aboard a Soyuz spacecraft to join an international crew in the International Space Station (ISS). Expedition 58/59 will be the first mission for SaintJacques and will mark the 17th space flight for the Canadian Astronaut Corps. During the mission, SaintJacques will wear a bio-monitoring system, including a smart shirt, which is designed to monitor astronauts’ vital signs and support the identification and mitigation of risks to humans in space. On Earth, it has the potential to monitor the health of Canadians in remote communities with limited access to their doctors. It could also be worn by workers in hazardous environments such as mines, industrial sites or factories. Saint-Jacques will also test a new instrument known as a bio-analyzer. This new Canadian instrument will perform near realtime analysis of blood, providing data on multiple biological markers and cell counts for research purposes. It has the potential to enhance patient testing on Earth

with simple, point-of-care services at any location. Future new space experiments that are also planned: • Immuno Profile: This experiment will investigate and monitor astronauts’ immune systems over long-duration missions on board the ISS. The results may help us understand how certain diseases evolve over time, such as the reactivation of latent viral infections and age-related decreases in immune defences

• Vascular Aging: Building on previous work in space, this experiment will study the impact of weightlessness, nutrition, physical activity and radiation on the cardiovascular system and the onset of insulin resistance in orbit. This collaborative study will be the first of its kind and will provide insights that will maintain crew health and point to important lifestyle factors that can affect us on Earth “Our government knows that investing in space technology and science aboard the International Space Station will have a direct and positive impact on the everyday lives of all Canadians,” said the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development. “As we look to take on more space-related missions, the health experiments announced will not only keep our astronauts safer and healthier, but will advance health-related innovations to keep Canadians, on Earth, healthier as well.” Canada’s space sector is comprised of nearly 10,000 well-paying jobs, including close to 3,000 scientists and engineers.

Canada’s largest integrated tourism company, Transat A.T. Inc., celebrated its 30th anniversary last month at an event held at its facilities at Montreal-Trudeau airport. With 375 partners and guests

in attendance, president and CEO Jean-Marc Eustache took the opportunity to unveil its new fleet livery and outlined plans for the creation of a new hotel division to remain “at the forefront of the travel industry.”

Transat’s new fleet livery is designed to reflect the recent evolution of the Transat brand image, while remaining faithful to the company’s promise “to brighten the everyday with the joy of vacations.”

The star symbol, emblematic of Transat, remains on the aircraft’s tail, the rear side fuselage and its wingtips. To mark the 30th anniversary, the design uses touches of grey, a nod to Air Transat’s very first livery. That livery features gradated shades of blue, to evoke the transformative power of holidays. Finally, the Air Transat name appears on the side and underside of the fuselage, ensuring its visibility even when the aircraft is in flight. Throughout its 30-year history, Transat has continued the vision of its founders—that of a leisure travel company open to the world. From its beginnings on November 14, 1987, when its inaugural flight took off from Montreal to Acapulco, Mexico, Transat now offers customers 60 destinations in two major markets—transatlantic (Europe and the Middle East) and South, out of 21 Canadian airports. The airline also commercializes its flights to Canada in 13 European countries, as well as in Israel, the United States and at numerous sun destinations.

Lufthansa receives 5-Star airline certification

Lufthansa’s investments in its fleet and improved services on board and on the ground have garnered the airline a 5-Star Certification from Skytrax.

Lufthansa has been Certified with the highest 5-Star Airline rating by Skytrax, the international air transport rating organization. Only nine other airlines have received this accolade, with Lufthansa being the only European airline to receive it. The Skytrax Certified 5-Star Airline Rating recognizes the highest overall quality performance and excellence in ground and inflight product provided to customers. A critical factor for an airline to achieve 5-Star Certification is consistency of standards. In this

regard, Lufthansa ranked highly across its network and different cabin types, with a core feature of the Lufthansa 5-star experience being consistent staff service quality across frontline customer touchpoints. “The achievement of 5-Star Airline status by Lufthansa is not only a great accolade as the first European airline to reach this target, but is a clear recognition of the improvements they have made in recent years, particularly in all areas of the front-line service delivery,” said Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax. Another key factor behind Lufthansa gaining 5-Star Airline Certification was the recent announcement of new business class cabin that will be delivered when the airline receives its first Boeing 777X aircraft and a new and even better Premium Economy and Economy class. Airbus, Rolls-Royce and Siemens team up to launch E-Fan X hybrid-electric flight demonstrator

Graphic of future E-Fan X hybrid-electric demonstrator.

Airbus, Rolls-Royce and Siemens have formed a partnership to develop a near-term flight demonstrator, which is described as a significant step forward in hybrid-electric propulsion for commercial aircraft. The E-Fan X hybrid-electric technology demonstrator is anticipated to fly in 2020 following a comprehensive ground test campaign, provisionally on a BAe 146 flying testbed, with one of the aircraft’s four gas turbine engines replaced by a two-megawatt electric motor. Provisions will be made to replace a second gas turbine with an electric motor once system maturity has been proven. The E-Fan X demonstrator

will explore the challenges of high-power propulsion systems, such as thermal effects, electric thrust management, altitude and dynamic effects on electric systems and electromagnetic compatibility issues. As part of the E-Fan X programme, Airbus, Rolls-Royce, and Siemens will each contribute with their extensive experience and know-how in their respective fields of expertise. Airbus will be responsible for overall integration as well as the control architecture of the hybridelectric propulsion system and batteries, and its integration with flight controls. Rolls-Royce will be responsible for the turbo-shaft engine, two-megawatt generator and

power electronics. Along with Airbus, Rolls-Royce will also work on the fan adaptation to the existing nacelle and the Siemens electric motor. Siemens will deliver the twomegawatt electric motors and power electronic control unit, as well as the inverter, DC/DC converter and power distribution system. Among the top challenges for today’s aviation sector is to move towards a means of transport with improved environmental performance that is more efficient and less reliant on fossil fuels. Electric and hybridelectric propulsion are seen today as among the most promising technologies for addressing these challenges.

Transport Canada amends prohibited items list for air passengers The ATR 72-500 is a short-haul airliner developed and produced in France and Italy in a joint venture formed by French aerospace company Aérospatiale and Italian aviation conglomerate Aeritalia.

Franco-Italian aircraft manufacturer ATR has received certification from Transport Canada for its ATR 72-500 twin-engine turboprop aircraft. The certification will allow Canadian airlines to operate ATR 72-500s either in passenger or cargo configuration. “Obtaining this certification will allow us to expand

the operational scope of our family of aircraft,” said Alessandro Amendola, senior vice president engineering at ATR. “Once again, ATRs have proven that they are the perfect match for challenging markets, such as Canada, where their ability to fly in extreme cold, icy weather conditions, take-off and land on unpaved and short runways and their unrivalled

performance are invaluable.” Currently, about 40 ATR aircraft are operated in Canada, providing passenger and freighter services to remote and isolated communities. Ontario-based First Air has already been operating the 50-seater version of the same series—the ATR 42-500—in the Canadian North for the past several years.

Under new regulations that came into effect November 27, 2017, Transport Canada is prohibiting certain powders and granular material with a volume of 350 millimetres (the size of a soda can) or more in all carry-on baggage in Canada. Items such as baby formula, protein powder, tea and coffee will still be permitted in any quantity. Prohibited material includes items such as bath salts, sea salt, baby powder, foot powder, cooking powder and sand. These items will still be

allowed in checked baggage. Consistent with international practice, Transport Canada has also amended the list so that very small knife blades (six centimetres or less—about the size of a large paper clip) will be allowed on domestic or international flights. Knife blades of any length will remain prohibited on flights to the United States through preclearance facilities. Razor blades and box cutters of any size will remain prohibited at all screening checkpoints. “The safety and security of

Canadians, the travelling public, and the transportation system are Transport Canada’s top priorities,” said the Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport. “These changes to screening procedures will bring Canada in line with international standards and our partner countries, while continuing to keep passengers safe. The Government of Canada remains vigilant in continuously assessing security risks.” For a complete list of items that are permitted in carry-on baggage, visit travel.gc.ca/air.

After learning that more than half of all business travellers feel that their best ideas come while showering, Marriott Hotels is testing a one-of-a-kind technology that allows guests to scribe or sketch their brilliant ideas and send it to themselves before they get washed down the drain. Here’s how it works. Guests start their shower as usual and as steam builds up and fogs the door they simply use their finger to write or draw on the steamed door whatever comes to mind—

name of their next hit song, idea for an app or the framework of a new idea. Touch-sensitive technology built into the shower door then sends the drawing or notes to the guest’s email. Marriott Hotels shot a demonstration video with social influencer artists to debut the technology, which can be viewed on Marriott Hotels’ YouTube channel: youtu.be/MLz_B0MkAy4 Located in the heart of Orange County, California, the Marriott Irvine is designed with the tech-savvy traveller in mind,

which makes it a natural place to debut the innovative Splash of Brilliance shower. The unique experience will be available to guests for two months at the newly redesigned Marriott Hotels Irvine, California. Marriott will determine any further rollout based on usage, feedback and satisfaction scores from guests. Boeing pledges to power construction of MIT’s new Wright Brothers Wind Tunnel

Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa has unveiled the most extensive refurbishment since its 2001 opening, bringing a contemporary approach to the hotel’s Arts & Crafts design style.

Disney’s deluxe Grand Californian Hotel & Spa at the Disneyland Resort has unveiled its hotel-wide refurbishment that includes completely redesigned guest rooms plus a refreshed lobby, pool area and conciergelevel lounge. The most extensive refurbishment since the hotel’s 2001 opening elevates the premium guest experience and brings a contemporary approach to the Arts & Crafts design style. “Our renovation brings an even more upscale experience to this iconic Southern California hotel, while staying committed

to its signature Arts & Crafts design,” said Dan Coleman, general manager of Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. “We want our guests to enjoy the unique experience of staying in a Disney hotel that’s distinctly situated in beautiful California. The revitalized design helps convey this feeling and allows us to continue exceeding guest expectations.” Every single element in the redesigned guest rooms is new—from flooring and walls, to furnishings and bathrooms. All rooms are powered with the latest technological features and premi-

um amenities, including 55-inch smart TVs, Keurig coffee makers and built-in USB chargers. In addition, many rooms offer breathtaking views of Disney California Adventure Park and Downtown Disney District, the lively avenue with unique restaurants, interesting shops and dynamic entertainment venues. Disney’s 948-room Grand California Hotel & Spa is its first resort hotel to be located inside a theme park, providing guests with a special entrance to the Disney California attractions.

The existing Wright Brothers Wind Tunnel, which dates to 1938, will be dismantled and the new tunnel constructed in the same location at MIT. Photo: William Litant, courtest MIT News.

Boeing will be the lead donor in the replacement of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) 79-year-old Wright Brothers Wind Tunnel with a new Wright Brothers Wind Tunnel that will be the largest and most advanced academic wind tunnel in the United States. Boeing has made a funding pledge to become the lead donor of the $18-million project. The gift reflects the centurylong relationship between MIT and Boeing that helped ignite

the global aerospace industry and points to the future of research and development that will fuel continued innovation, according to Greg Hyslop, Boeing chief technology officer and senior vice president, engineering test and technology. With the added designation The Wright Brothers Wind Tunnel—a Gift of the Boeing Company, the new tunnel, like the current tunnel, will be operated by the MIT Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

The new tunnel will be constructed on the site of the current tunnel which was dedicated in September 1938. From its early days during World War II, when technicians worked around the clock designing military aircraft, testing in the tunnel has branched out to include ground antenna configurations, ski gear, space suits, wind turbines, ship sails and most recently, a design for clean, quiet and super-efficient commercial aircraft.

“We see significant potential for this technology, it could be rolled out at airports to monitor ground service equipment, or used to manage mail shipments and eventually we would like to see it become customer facing so our cargo customers can more easily track their shipments,” said Nelson. Air New Zealand Cargo plays a significant role in growing New Zealand’s high value exports, processing much of the country’s air freighted imports. The airline operates an average of 3,566 cargo flights per week and exports a total of 42,000 tonnes of goods from New Zealand annually.

IATA forecasts strong airline profitability to continue in 2018

Despite rising costs in the aviation sector, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) is forecasting improved net profitability for airlines in 2018, because of strong demand, efficiency and reduced interest payments. IATA is forecasting global air transport profits to rise to $38.4-billion in 2018, an improvement from the $34.5-billion expected net profit in 2017. The forecasted rise in profit for 2018 is expected to be the fourth consecutive year of sustainable profits with a return on invested capital (9.4%) exceeding the industry’s average cost of capital (7.4%). “These are good times for the global air transport industry,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s director general and CEO. “Safety performance is solid. We have a clear strategy that is delivering results on environmental performance. More people than ever are travelling. The demand for air cargo is at its strongest level in over a decade. Employment is growing. More routes are being opened. Airlines are achieving sustainable levels of profitability. It’s still, however, a tough business and we are being challenged on the cost front by

rising fuel, labour and infrastructure expenses.” Passenger numbers are expected to increase to 4.3-billion in 2018. Passenger traffic (revenue passenger kilometres or RPKs) is expected to rise six per cent (slightly down on the 7.5 per cent growth of 2017 but still ahead of the average of the past 10-20 years of 5.5 per cent. The biggest challenge to profitability in 2018 will be rising costs. Crude oil and jet fuel prices are expected to increase by 10.7 per cent and 12.5 per cent, respectively. Fuel costs are expected to be 20.25 per cent of total costs in 2018, up from 18.8 per cent in 2017 Labour costs have been accelerating strongly and, at a forecast of 30.9 per cent for 2018, will be a larger expense item than fuel. Overall costs are forecast to grow by 4.3 per cent in 2018, a significant acceleration on the 1.7 per cent increase in 2017. This will outpace an expected 3.5 per cent increase in unit revenues. All global regions are expected to report improved profitability in 2018 and are expected to see demand growth outpace capacity expansion. Carriers in North America

will continue to lead on financial performance and are forecast to generate the strongest financial performance with net profits of $16.4-billion in 2018 (up from $15.6-billion in 2017). Market conditions are expected to continue to be strong, with announced capacity growth (3.4 per cent) likely to be slightly less than our traffic forecast of 3.5 per cent. North American airlines have generated more than half of the industry’s profits produced in the past three years, but rising cost pressures have slowed further improvements. Low hedging ratios mean rising fuel prices have hit this region first and labour cost pressures have been an issue, though the expectation is that this pressure will diminish in 2018. Economic impact of aviation Overall, the aviation sector continues to play a major part in contributing to the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). For example, the value of goods carried by airlines is expected to exceed $6.2-trillion in 2018, representing 7.4 per cent of world GDP. On average across the world IATA forecasts that in 2018 each airline employee will generate more than $109,000 of gross value added (the firm-level equivalent to GDP), which is considerably higher than the economywide average. Additionally, international tourists travelling by air are expected to spend more than $750-billion in 2018, a rise of 15 per cent in just over two years.

Appointment

BC Aviation Council announces new executive administrative director The British Columbia Aviation Council (BCAC) has appointed Dave Frank as the organization’s new executive director. Frank spent five years as the director - marketing and public relations for St. John Ambulance, arguably the leading not-forprofit charitable enterprise in the province, playing the leadership role in modernizing St. John’s brand and products to the benefit of almost 120,000 students a year, 2000 volunteers and 125 employees. He was a longtime board member (and past chair) of Canada’s leading campus-based community radio station CiTR; recently on the Board of DOXA: Vancouver’s Documentary Film Festival and Society; and, is currently the chair of the Richmond Community Foundation. “We are very pleased that Dave has agreed to join our team,” said Heather Bell, chair of BCAC. “His extensive experience in the for-profit and not-forprofit sectors is exactly what we

need at this stage in the BCAC’s growth.” Frank founded a substantial international transportation and economic development consulting company as well as the ICC International Commercial Centre, at the time Canada’s foremost multimodal freight gateway trade zone. He constructed and managed two major research teams in the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Sauder School of Business, one examining indus-

try productivity and (roughly 20 years later) the application of intelligent transportation systems to freight security; has been a senior executive member of a regional cargo and air ambulance airline; was elected two terms to the UBC Board of Governors; and, once as president of the UBC Student Society. “I look forward to helping the BCAC get to the next level, building on the hard work of outgoing executive director Candace McKibbon and Administrator Donna Farquhar,” said Frank. “It is going to be great fun working with and supporting the membership.” The aviation and aerospace sector is critical to growing the B.C. economy, supporting all British Columbians. It is the role of the BCAC, in partnership with members, stakeholders and the community, to positively influence the well-being of the aviation and aerospace sector to the benefit of the province’s social and economic development.

Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Seasonal service to Calgary begins June 7, 2018, using Embraer E175 aircraft operated by Envoy. “We began service to Canada over 75 years ago, making it our longest-served international destination,” said Vasu Raja, American’s vice president, net-

Richmond News Big screen business has big economic impact

Commercial filming activity took place three out of every four days in Richmond in 2016.

British Columbia’s film sector continues to enjoy sturdy growth and is pumping millions of dollars annually into Richmond’s economy, according to a panel of film industry leaders. The film industry generates $2.7-billion in annual spending province-wide. At the local level in Richmond that includes $26-million in wages paid to residents and $500,000 in fees and charges collected by the City in 2016. Richmond enjoyed successive recordbreaking years for filming activity in 2015 and 2016. Speaking as part of Big Screen, Big Impact, a recent panel discussion co-hosted by City of Richmond and the Richmond Chamber of Commerce, four industry leaders indicated the robust growth in the BC industry is showing no signs of slowing down. Panelists included Kathy Gilroy, producer of the popular television series, Once Upon a Time; Peter Leitch, chair of the Motion Picture Production Industry Association of BC and president of North Shore Studios; Sandi Cooper, BC Film commissioner; and Kendrie Upton, director of the Directors Guild of Canada British Columbia. Commercial filming activity took place three out of every four days in Richmond in 2016. Richmond is best known as the primary shooting location

for Once Upon a Time during the series’ first six seasons. This year, two brand new series (set to air in 2018) The Crossing and Siren have regularly filmed on location in Richmond. Recent movie blockbusters such as Deadpool and Battle for the Planet of the Apes also spent considerable time filming on location in Richmond. “The industry’s extensive economic impact in Richmond and B.C. is staggering,” said Richmond Chamber president and CEO, Matt Pitcairn. “From the people employed in the industry, to the locations and services our community provides, there are so many opportunities for business owners to reap its benefits.” The panellists noted that a key aspect of the B.C. industry’s robust growth is the availability of skilled and experienced film crews, which in turns drives local employment. More than 1,840 Richmond residents are directly employed by the film industry, while thousands of others benefit from production spending. “The City of Richmond is committed to being [sic] a film-friendly community,” said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “We’re working closely with our government and industry partners to leverage our collaborative approach and outstanding location inventory to bring even more spending and jobs to our city.”

Range Rover rear sway bar replacement

2011 Range Rover—a capable vehicle for off-road use.

Rear sway bar showing close up of the hydraulic unit.

Rear sway bar assembly—Note the hydraulic unit, which isolates both sides of the sway bar.

Many items found on Range Rovers are far from simple, and the rear sway bar is no exception. The Range Rover’s sway bars are part of the vehicle’s stability control system and incorporate a hydraulic unit capable of isolating both sides of the bar. Our featured vehicle, a 2011 Range Rover, was brought to our auto repair shop with its dash warning light on—an indication of a stability control malfunction. Diagnosis found the fluid level low in the underhood reservoir, which was traced to a leak in the rear sway bar hydraulic unit. The rear sway bar hydraulic unit is a non-repairable part and must be replaced as a complete unit. Since the part is buried deep under the rear of the vehicle above the differential and requires the body to be lifted from the frame to remove and reinstall the unit, this repair can be expensive. Sway bars are found on most cars and light trucks, its primary purpose is to reduce body roll went cornering and making high speed manoeuvers. Its system components include a metal bar attached to the vehicle frame, which extends to each control arm or strut through an end link. Bars connect both sides of each axle together. While this generally works well, this is a mechanical component that functions the same under all conditions. Sometimes it is advantageous to change the tension of the sway bar, even disconnecting the two sides of the car completely. This is what the Range Rover’s system does. Among the many amazing features on a Range Rover is a

very advanced suspension system. The vehicle features air suspension that allows the driver to adjust the vehicle’s height. Terrain control is another good feature available on Range Rovers. Drivers can adjust the knob located on the center console for different road and climate conditions—steep hills, snow, sand, rocks or pavement. The terrain control system incorporates a number of components and controls the transfer case and differentials, suspension height and response and also the sway bars. It is also able to decouple them to allow individual, extra travel in the suspension system—an extremely useful feature during extreme offroad use. While 99 per cent of Range

Rovers in the Vancouver area never go off road, it is one of the most capable vehicles than can do so. However, with beautiful paint, low profile tires and wheels and a cost of more than $100,000, it is difficult to criticize owners for staying on the paved highway. Solution for December 2017 Crossword.

GEOFF SCRIPTURE Answer:

Fokker 100 The Fokker 100 is a medium-sized, twin-turbofan jet airliner from Fokker, the largest such aircraft built by the company before its bankruptcy in 1996. Although the Fokker 100 itself proved to be popular and an effective success in the marketplace, Fokker had remained a money-making business for several years. In 1996, the accumulated losses contributed to the collapse of Fokker. During early 1997, production of the Fokker 100 wrapped up.
