Vancouver International Airport recently celebrated Beijing Capital Airlines (Capital Airlines) and its new, thrice-weekly service between Vancouver and Hangzhou, via Qingdao. Capital Airlines is the sixth mainland Chinese carrier to service YVR—two more than any other airport in North America or Europe. “I would like to thank Capital Airlines for choosing YVR as its first North American destination,” said Craig Richmond, YVR’s president and CEO. “This new service opens up two amazing new Chinese destinations for all of Canada and is another key milestone in our vision of connecting Asia to the Americas.” The new service presents exciting new business and tourism opportunities. Hangzhou, located in
the central eastern coast of China, is among the country’s seven most ancient cities and is famous for West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has had a profound impact on poets, painters and designers throughout Chinese history. Qingdao, located in northeast China, is a major seaport and industrial centre. In addition to hosting the world’s longest sea bridge, Qingdao is well-known for its diverse economy focused on heavy industry, software, automotive, electronics and banking—and the famous Tsingtao Brewery, the second largest in China.
“The new Vancouver– Qingdao–Hangzhou route will provide more choices and convenience for travellers and will further strengthen economic and cultural ties between Canada and China,” said Xu Xin, chairman of Capital Airlines. “Capital Airlines strives to be a leading brand in the international tourism and air travel industry and we are looking forward to working with YVR.” In addition to strengthening business and tourism opportunities between China and Canada, this route will have a positive impact on the local
economy. The new service brings 123 jobs and $6.2-million in GDP to the province of British Columbia and will add $4.2-million in wages and $2.3-million in taxes. “I’m delighted to celebrate Beijing Capital Airlines’ brand new B.C. to China connection between Vancouver and the cities of Qingdao and Hangzhou, China,” said the Honourable Teresa Wat, Minister of International Trade and Asia Pacific Strategy and Multiculturalism, Province of British Columbia. “This new service is an important step
in building even closer ties with our neighbours across the Pacific. This flight will attract more tourists and business visitors from these two important Chinese cities while opening doors for Canadian companies and building stronger trade ties with eastern China.” The new route between YVR and Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (HGH) via Qingdao Liuting International Airport (TAO) will be flown on an Airbus 330, with seating for 222 passengers including 36 in business class and 186 in economy. New services such as this are made possible as a result of YVR’s new five-year airline rates and charges program, ConnectYVR. The program provides a highly competitive rate structure and includes rates lower than any other major airport in Canada and competing U.S. airports.

Such approval is required under the airline’s agreement with the WestJet Pilots Association. “This agreement reflects the collaborative relationship we have with the WestJet Pilots Association (WJPA) and now allows us to proceed with plans to expand our wide-body operations to new destinations in the future,” said Gregg Saretsky, WestJet CEO. “We will now turn our attention to acquiring additional wide-body aircraft to satisfy the demand for our low fares.”

Chef Ramesh Thangaraja from Canucks Bar and Grill at YVR.
The passion for cooking is immediately evident when speaking about food with Chef Ramesh Thangaraja from Canucks Bar and Grill at YVR. Chef Ramesh uses fresh—neverfrozen—ingredients and makes all the restaurant’s sauces inhouse on a daily basis. Arriving in Vancouver by way of India and Sri Lanka, Ramesh Thangaraja is a classically trained chef who has plied his trade at some of the best restaurants in the city, including Bridges, Joe Fortes, Lift and
CHOP, before landing in the Canucks Bar and Grill operated by HMShost in US Departures. Dedicated to delivering the highest quality dishes to travellers and setting a new standard for airport fare, Chef Ramesh goes above and beyond every day to ensure that first forkful or that first beverage of a passenger’s long-awaited vacation is everything and more. How did you get into cooking? My father died when I was seven and my mum; she went to

work, so we all had to take turns. First my sister would cook, then I started helping. Then I started to read books about cooking and wanted to learn and I made many mistakes, but I wanted to learn more. So I started working in kitchens and then I went to cooking school where I became a top student. My mum taught me a lot, but at school I learned so much. The one thing my mum taught me that I always remember is: “Love your job and your job will love you.” And that’s how it became my passion. I never get bored of cooking. What do you like about working at YVR? I love the scenery, and the views are spectacular at YVR. Every day, I see different people travelling and their happy faces make me happy to work at the best airport in the world. Every day is different. Where does your inspiration to create wonderful food come from? My creativity comes from working with different local chefs. I am inspired the most when a guest leaves happy after having a meal at Canucks. This is a chef’s dream come true; to see a satisfied guest. What makes Canucks Bar & Grill special? You want every thing fresh and the Canucks Bar & Grill is all about the experience. I am proud to work for a company like HMShost, a world leader in operating food and beverage at airports. We continuously focus on
menu development and our customer service. I believe we created a well-thought-out menu, which features an irresistible selection of signature dishes, and we only use high-quality, fresh ingredients. We have an experienced management team and staff who welcome each of our guests to enjoy a great meal in a comfortable, friendly setting. Also, all the chefs here go and touch the tables and look the customer in the eye. This makes sure they are confident in the food they cook and proud of their work. It makes them better chefs.
What do you recommend from the menu at Canucks Bar and Grill? I am proud of every offering on the menu, but always recommend starting with our Korean spring rolls, made to order, served on crisp butter lettuce cups and a great Thai chili sauce. Passengers flying out of YVR to the United States are encouraged to sample the fresh food made with the greatest of care by Chef Ramesh and his team at the Canucks Bar and Grill, located after security, Level 3 Departures.

Lift Bar & Grill at YVR offers chef-inspired plates that highlight West Coast flavours.
The coastal waters theme is also evident from the menu, which features Oceanwisecertified seafood. YVR partnered with SSP Canada, a division of SSP Group, a leading operator of food and beverage brands in travel locations worldwide, to bring the Lift Bar & Grill concept to the airport. With more than 50 years experience, the SSP Group serves approximately one-million customers every day. SSP currently operates approximately 2,000 units in more than 30 countries around the world, including 10 locations at YVR. “With the International Departures area serving as a global gateway between Asia and the Americas, Lift Bar & Grill is a welcome addition to the worldly minded passengers of YVR,” said Michael Svagdis, chief executive officer of SSP
Canada. “We’re honoured to work closely with Chef Soojin Park and the Lift team to craft a stylish restaurant experience that truly delivers a memorable taste of Vancouver before passengers head to their next destination.” In addition to Lift Bar & Grill, SSP Canada will open five other food and beverage locations, occupying 1,321 square metres at YVR. The restaurants will include a mix of local as well as modern, worldclass international and proprietary brands. Pajo’s Fish & Chips serves locally sourced, but world famous fish and chips; Bánh Shop features traditional Vietnamese street sandwiches and bowls; and Freshii provides fresh and healthy food options. These offerings will be opening throughout 2017, with two additional concepts to be opened in 2019. The entire portfolio will further enhance YVR’s awardwinning concession program.

New non-stop flight to Denver via Air Canada Air Canada has announced a string of new services to the U.S. for 2017, further connecting YVR with a key growth market. This includes new year-round service from YVR to Denver, Colorado and the conversion of its Vancouver-Phoenix, Arizona service to year-round—starting in spring 2017. These new and expanded services add to an impressive couple of years for Air Canada.
Since 2015, the airline has introduced eight new services to YVR including Osaka, Japan; Cancun, Mexico; San Jose and San Diego, Caliornia; Chicago, Illinois; Dublin, Ireland; Brisbane, Australia; and Delhi, India. This growth is set to continue in 2017 with five new destinations scheduled to launch including Taipei, Taiwan; Nagoya, Japan; Frankfurt, Germany; London Gatwick, England; Dallas, Texas; and Denver, Colorado.
In 2016, YVR welcomed more than 18.8-million passengers between January and October—a record-breaking passenger growth of 9.5 per cent during that period, with the year-end tally expected to reach 22-million passengers. This increase is largely the result of Air Canada’s expansion of its YVR transpacific hub, which represents 50 per cent of its passengers, serving more than 55 destinations worldwide.

New reporting tool part of initiatives to improve drone safety in Canada
Alaska Air completes merger with Virgin America, becomes 5th largest U.S. airline
DJI Quadcopter Drone with camera.
Last month, Kate Young, Member of Parliament for London West and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport, on behalf of Minister Marc Garneau, outlined concrete steps that have been taken by Transport Canada to improve safety and support innovation in one of Canada’s fastest growing industries: drones, also known as unmanned air vehicles (UAVs). These include the use of a new incident-reporting tool to keep Canadians safe from reckless drone use and the issuance of new exemptions for non-recreational operators that will help industry evolve and develop in this rapidly changing field. Transport Canada is focused
on a number of key areas including: • Helping Canadians report safety concerns through the new online tool • Improving regulations for drone operators • Simplifying rules for commercial operators with two new exemptions • Supporting innovation for commercial operators at a new drone test site in Alberta • Partnering with retailers to provide safety information at the point-of-sale • Launching a No Drone Zone public awareness campaign Canadians are encouraged to visit canada.ca/drone-safety for updates on the department’s
progress on drones. Quick Facts Anyone who operates a drone in a reckless and negligent manner, violates controlled or restricted airspace, or endangers the safety of manned aircraft could face fines of up to $25,000 and/or prison. So far in 2016, the department has issued 4,298 Special Flight Operations Certificates (SFOCs), compared to 2,480 SFOCs in 2015 (an increase of 73 per cent). If an operator does not follow the requirements of their SFOC, Transport Canada can issue fines of up to $3,000 for an individual and $15,000 for a business.

Alaska Air has completed its acquisition of Virgin America. The original merger agreement was signed in April 2016 and approved by Virgin America shareholders in July 2016. Alaska Airlines and Virgin America will spend 2017 working to secure Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification to allow the two airlines to operate as a single carrier (with regional sister carrier Horizon Air remaining on its own separate operating certificate). “Alaska Airlines and Virgin America are different airlines, but we believe different works – and we’re confident fliers will agree,” said Brad Tilden, CEO of Alaska Air Group. “Together, we’ll offer more flights, with low fares, more rewards and more for customers to love, as we continue to offer a distinctive travel experience. The two airlines may look different, but our core cus-
tomer and employee focus is very much the same.” The combined airline now services nearly 1,200 daily flights to 118 destinations, the most seats on flights from the West Coast and more than $7-billion annual revenues. No decisions regarding the Virgin America brand have been made. Alaska plans to continue to operate the Virgin America fleet with its current name and product for a period of time while it conducts extensive customer research to understand what fliers value the most. Virgin America will continue to fly under its brand with no immediate changes to the onboard product or experience. The new airline will also be one of the aviation industry’s greenest—between Virgin America’s carbon offset program and Alaska Airlines’ efforts to propel the development of avia-
tion biofuels. The carriers also currently fly two of the youngest fleets in U.S. skies, with an average fleet age of 8.5 years. Alaska Airlines has received top accolades for its customer service scores for eight years running, while Virgin America regularly receives top marks in rankings of best domestic airlines. For the past three years, Alaska Airlines has been ranked No. 1 in the Wall Street Journal’s annual airline scorecard. For the past two, Virgin has ranked No. 2. For customers with future travel already booked on Alaska Airlines or Virgin America, business continues as usual. Learn more about what the merger means for customers at differentworks.com. While travellers are able to purchase Virgin America tickets at alaskaair.com, tickets will continue to be available for sale at virginamerica.com for the immediate future.

Airbus Fly Your Ideas 2015 winners.
A record 5,499 students from around the world registered to participate in the fifth edition of Airbus’ Fly Your Ideas, the global student challenge organized in partnership with UNESCO. A group of 60 Airbus experts and innovators assessed the ideas submitted by 356 teams from 89 countries. The rigorous evaluation process took place at four different Airbus locations in France, Germany, Spain and the UK, with 50 student teams selected to reach Round Two of the competition, which begins this month. Two Canadian teams, one from the University of Toronto and the other from the University of Montreal, are included in the Round Two shortlist. The 50 teams shortlisted comprise 202 students representing 38 different nationalities, with 52 per cent of teams mixing
male and female students. This reflects Airbus’ commitment to diversity, which it sees as an essential driver for innovation and success. Innovative ideas from the 50 chosen teams include robotic luggage trolleys, passenger seats which can be boarded outside the aircraft, new solutions for energy harvesting and virtual reality applications. Each of the teams has 100 days to refine and develop their ideas. “Fly Your Ideas is unique and we are proud of the company-wide engagement of Airbus employees who support the competition, either as assessors, mentors or experts,” said Charles Champion, Airbus executive vice president engineering. “We are offering students the rare opportunity to interact directly with senior specialists from across the business. In turn,
these experts will benefit from their direct interaction with talents from across the globe, all sharing the same passion for one of the world’s most exciting industries.” The top five teams to make it through to Round Three will spend a week at the ProtoSpace based at the Airbus headquarter in Toulouse, France., where they will prototype, test and visualize their ideas using state-of-the art equipment with personalized guidance from Airbus. The winning team will receive a 30,000-euro prize, the runner up team 15,000 euros. The prizes will be awarded at a live event in May 2017. Starting this month, the 50 teams will start developing their ideas and share updates on their progress with photos, sketches and stories posted on airbus-fyi. com.
Integration begins for Airbus’ next-generation Beluga XL Airbus’ next-generation oversize cargo airlifter is transitioning from concept to reality as the first Beluga XL core airframe starts its 18-month integration process at Airbus’ production facilities in Toulouse, France. The core airframe is an extract of an Airbus A330-200 freighter that has been structurally reinforced, providing the platform on which the Beluga XL airframe will be built. This element was assembled in December without a nose fuselage or tail assembly – both of which will be added during activity planned in 2017. For the first 12 months of the assembly activity, the airframe will be completed and its mechanical and electrical systems will be fitted at an integration station. For the remaining six months, the aircraft will move to a second station for ground testing and engine installation. “The coming year of final integration will be a series of small steps,” said Beluga XL

program head Bertrand George. “The number of holes to be drilled and fasteners to be installed is far bigger than on any other Airbus aircraft. Sticking to schedule at each step is the key to being ready for first flight in 2018. I fully trust the capability of our teams to make it happen together.” Based on the airframe of the A330 jetliner, a total of five Beluga XL airlifters are to be
built, with the first to enter operational service in 2019. They will gradually replace the existing fleet of Beluga ST aircraft, which were derived from the shorterfuselage A300. Once the first Beluga XL enters service, it will provide crucial support to Airbus’ production ramp-up since it will be capable of carrying a full set of A350 XWB wings.

Canadians favour fitness over finances for 2017 resolutions
Each year, losing weight and increasing fitness remains one of the top five New Year’s resolutions.
With a new year comes new beginnings, resolutions and willingness to make a fresh start. According to a recent Ipsos survey, 33 per cent of Canadians said improving their personal fitness and nutrition is their top New Year’s resolution for 2017, compared with only 21 per cent who chose to focus on financial goals. The survey, conducted on behalf of GoodLife Fitness, a Canadian health club company, also found 13 per cent of Canadians resolved to dedicate more time to travel and leisure, 11 per cent plan to quit bad habits like smoking or drinking and 10 per cent would spend more time with family and friends. Fifty-three percent of the survey’s participants listed improving their overall quality of life as the primary motivation for pursuing a health and wellness resolution. Preventing health risks (45 per cent), losing weight (42 per cent) and increasing their energy (41 per cent) ranked as other top reasons to exercise more and eat better. Many Canadians said they were willing to make lifestyle changes to achieve their fitness and nutrition goals. Nearly half (45 per cent) said they would plan to change their eating habits by developing a healthy meal plan, while one in three (34 per cent) said they would set a weight loss goal for themselves. Other Canadians are looking to become more active. Four in 10 (41 per cent) would spend more time outdoors, while one in four (24 per cent) said they would find a friend with whom to be active. One in five Canadians (18 per cent) said they would join a gym.

here is no intentional pun in observing that 2016 simply flew by at YVR, as a host of new routes, retail openings, community festivals and in-terminal events fuelled the pace-setting year. Following are some of the events that made 2016 a special year at YVR. Reg Davidson artwork unveiled YVR houses one of the largest collections of BC First Nations art on public display, which makes the airport distinctive, enjoyable and memorable within the global network of aviation hubs. In January 2016, a stunning new collection was unveiled for the enjoyment of travellers. Raven Stealing the Beaver Lake, The Blind Halibut Fisherman and Raven with a Broken Beak, carved by internationally acclaimed artist Reg Davidson, recount Haida myths in which Raven is featured as both beneficent cultural hero and prank-playing trickster. The carvings are on display in the Link Rotunda area of YVR’s Domestic Terminal, after security near C Pier departure gates. 1
2 Air Canada led with new services The stunning snapshot of an Air Canada plane with the snow-capped mountains in the background represents a massive year of growth for Air Canada at YVR. Since 2015, Air Canada introduced eight new services to YVR: Osaka, Cancun, San Jose, San Diego, Chicago, Dublin, Brisbane and Delhi. Between January and October 2016, Air Canada reached a record high for capacity with 10.9-million seats—an increase of 12 per cent over the same period in 2015. The airline’s international sector, which includes the Asia Pacific, Europe and Latin America, led the growth with a 22.6 per cent increase. This growth continues in 2017 with five new destinations scheduled to launch, including Taipei, Nagoya, Frankfurt, London Gatwick and Dallas. What a year for Air Canada at YVR!
YVR received 7th consecutive Best Airport in North America award In March, YVR was named Best Airport in North America for an unprecedented seventh consecutive year at the Skytrax World Airport Awards in Cologne, Germany. YVR is the first airport in the world to win 3
seven years in a row, breaking the record for consecutive Skytrax awards. The Skytrax World Airport Awards are based on 13.2-million passenger surveys conducted in 555 airports around the world. The survey measures 39 elements in the airport travel experience including check-in, security and border clearance processes, comfort, efficiency, signage, transportation availability, passenger amenities and friendliness. This is the world’s largest independent airport customer satisfaction survey. Jade Canoe turned 20 The Spirit of Haida Gwaii: The Jade Canoe by legendary Canadian artist Bill Reid celebrated its 20th anniversary at YVR. The iconic sculpture serves as the natural nexus point for the entire airport, where the public and passengers meet prior to grand adventures and where countless photos have been taken over the past two decades. 5 Ed Force One rocked on There was a major buzz at YVR in April, when Ed Force One landed in Vancouver for Iron Maiden’s world tour. This custom-designed Boeing 747 equipped to carry more than 10,000 kilograms of equipment was piloted by Iron Maiden band leader Bruce Dickinson. 4
6 First A380 summer service The world’s largest passenger jet touched down at YVR on May 1 to much fanfare and excitement from the community, which turned out in droves to see this behemoth land. The A380 flew throughout the summer on British Airways’ daily service between Vancouver and London Heathrow. This marked the first A380 service to YVR, but perhaps not the last as it is hoped that this awesome aircraft will return in 2017.
WestJet soared with new services It was quite a year for WestJet at YVR. In addition to new domestic services to Canadian cities such as Hamilton and London, Ontario and Halifax, Nova Scotia, WestJet also welcomed a new Boeing 767 aircraft to its fleet and launched its first international service to London Gatwick. 7
Salmon Safe certification Sustainability is one of the core values at YVR and major environmental goals were met to reduce impact on the incredible natural Sea Island environment. In 2016, YVR became the first airport in North America to be certified Salmon Safe. This certification acknowledges YVR’s ongoing efforts 8

and commitment to transform its land and water management practices, protect Fraser River water quality and enhance the habitat in order that Pacific salmon continue to thrive. YVR also received Level 2 Carbon Accreditation from Airports Council International North America. Long-time airport employee retired As resident barber in Domestic Terminal Level 1, Franco Ingenito was a fixture at the airport for almost 50 years. An Italian immigrant, Ingenito first sharpened his razor in 1969 and had been cutting hair at the airport for 46 years. In that time he served hockey great Jean Beliveau, federal ministers, and countless airport employees and travellers. 9
10 Pet Relief Area unveiled A pet relief area was opened in the US Departures area, making travelling with a K9 companion all the more convenient and comfortable for both travellers and their four-legged companions. 11 YVR Pride YVR took its community investment to another level in 2016, contributing one-million dollars to community partners. The YVR Team participated in a record number of community events around the

Lower Mainland, including marching in the annual Vancouver Pride Parade. 12 Xiamen Airlines began service X marked the spot as YVR welcomed Xiamen Airlines to its already impressive stable of Chinese carriers. The year-round, non-stop Boeing 787 service operates three times weekly between YVR and Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport. 13 Community Chill Out Day YVR hosted its first Community Chill Out Day this past summer at Flight Path Park. This free, family event was attended by almost 2,000 people and another is planned for 2017. 14 Future planning: YVR 2037 What does the future of YVR look like? That was the question being asked of the community throughout Phase 2 of the airport’s Master Plan consultation. YVR hired a futurist who imagined a fantastical reality filled with high-tech additions to the airport that would fit into any science fiction film. This image includes a massive vertical garden, robot assistance and of course YVR’s signature sense of place. 15 Shoreline Cleanup Hundreds of people turned up at Iona Beach

Regional Park on a Sunday in September to help clear the beach of debris during the annual Shoreline Cleanup, one of the largest direct action environmental programs in Canada and the third largest in the world. 16 Direct to Delhi started with Diwali Launched in time to help travellers get to Delhi in time for Diwali Celebration of Light festivities, direct service on Air Canada was celebrated with a splash of colour and a cultural celebration that recognized the importance of this new route from YVR. 17 Airport of the Year Award YVR received Airport of the Year at the annual CAPA Aviation Awards for Excellence in late October. Given to the airport that has done the most to advance the progress of the aviation industry, YVR was the first airport in North America to win the award. 18 Autism Access Sticker introduced The new YVR Autism Access Sticker was developed as part of the I CAN Fly program, a collaboration between YVR and the Canucks Autism Network (CAN) that provides air travel resources to sup-
20
port individuals and families living with autism. The YVR Autism Access Sticker is a self-identification tool for individuals living with autism that can be placed on boarding passes. The sticker ensures an expedited airport process through screening and customs, and better communicates the specific needs of passengers to airport employees. 19 Asia-Pacific region a source of growth
A year of incredible growth of routes and services between YVR and the Asia-Pacific region was capped in December with the launch of China Eastern Nanjing service and Beijing Capital Airlines Hangzhou service. YVR has the most mainland Chinese carriers of any airport in North America and Europe and aims to continue to target this market for growth and work towards a goal of 25-million passengers by 2020. 20 Holiday Hamper Drive YVR partnered with Quest Food Exchange for
the sixth annual Holiday Hamper Drive. With the help of the Sea Island community more than 700 meals were provided to families in need for the holiday season.

Spreading joy during the holiday season The annual Christmas DropIn at YVR Chapel was a joyous event, once again. Chapel staff and volunteers shared hot apple cider and home-made goodies with many YVR employees, especially the outside workers who battled the days of inclement weather. Many happy YVR customer service ambassadors, aka Green Coats, visited the Chapel and joined in the festivities. For extra fun, handouts about the “real” story of Santa Claus and some of his hidden treasures were also made available. The YVR Chapel is open 24/7 and its team of chaplains and volunteers is available from 9am to 7pm daily, providing support, counsel, practical assistance and spiritual direction to people of all faiths and those of no faith connection. For 2017, the Chapel is offering an additional service of worship for the benefit of Sea Island employees who work on weekends. Each Friday, a Roman Catholic Mass will be hosted, starting at 4pm. Also, for the first time in many years, the YVR Chapel will host a booth at Vancouver Missions Fest at Canada Place,

New community centres, animal shelter top Richmond’s building list An expanded Steveston Community Centre and Library, a second community centre for Richmond’s rapidly growing City Centre, a new Richmond Animal Shelter, a new Lawn Bowling Clubhouse and restoration of the Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site and Phoenix Net Loft have been moved to the top of Richmond City Council’s “to do” priority list for major facilities development. The five projects have been identified as Council’s key priorities within Richmond’s Major Facilities Plan. A rigorous two-year review considered 148 existing civic facilities, new facility demands, funding availability and other considerations in determining which projects should receive priority ranking. The overall cost and timing of the projects is yet to be determined. Further public consultation is also required before Council makes a final decision to green light the projects. Richmond Council has approved $2-million in funding to begin advanced
planning and design for the proposed facilities. The new City Centre Community Centre North project has received preliminary approval by Council. Subject to final rezoning approval, the centre will be funded through a developer contribution associated with redevelopment of the site. “Our community is continuing to grow and evolve and we need to ensure our civic facilities continue to meet the high standards of customer service our residents expect,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “These projects serve a diverse array of community needs for today and for the future.” Richmond Council acknowledges that other new priority projects may arise over time as community needs change or other funding opportunities become available. The priority list does not include ongoing capital investments for facility upkeep and maintenance or facility improvements to ensure existing facilities continue to meet community needs.

Hands-free “driving” in an autonomous drive car

Auto Talk
By Carlos Ghosn
Recently, I experienced the unusual, thrilling sensation of riding in the driver’s seat of an autonomous-drive car as it navigated the streets of Sunnyvale in California’s Silicon Valley. The car was an advanced prototype Infiniti Q50 sedan capable of handling complex city driving. It had a special California registration for autonomous drive vehicles, and I had to receive a special state license to operate it hands-free. What struck me was how quickly I grew comfortable as the car smoothly and safely negotiated the suburban streets, including intersections and dense traffic. Accompanied by a Nissan engineer, we simply set the destination, put the car in autonomous drive mode, and off we went— safely, without a hitch. We went on both the freeway and city streets; there were times when other drivers cut in on us, but never did we feel threatened. Each time the car anticipated the other car’s move and reacted appropriately. Cars that can change lanes on their own, negotiate city streets and handle the drudgery Solution for January 2017 Crossword.

of stop-and-go traffic are coming soon. In fact, the Renault-Nissan Alliance has committed to launch at least 10 models with significant autonomous drive functionality by 2020. Many of today’s cars already are equipped with several building blocks for autonomous drive technologies, including lane-departure prevention, forward emergency braking, and improved safety sensors. With almost every automaker now developing these technologies, we are going to see advancements come in rapid succession. It is important to make a distinction between autonomous drive features that will be introduced in the next few years and fully autonomous, driverless cars, the mass marketing of which will come later. At Renault-Nissan Alliance, our strategy is to roll out autonomous-drive technology in four stages: Stage 1 is autonomous drive
on single lanes. Stage 2 is autonomous drive for multilane highway driving with lane changes by 2018. Stage 3 is autonomous city driving, which we expect by 2020. Stage 4 is a completely driverless car—no one even needs to be inside it; the car drives itself with no need for human intervention. Already there are small fleets of driverless taxis, or “robotaxis,” being tested in limited areas of a few cities around the world. The technology still needs to be perfected for the extreme conditions to which cars are sometimes exposed and regulators and lawmakers in many different jurisdictions will need to put in place new laws and regulations necessary to permit the widespread use of driverless cars. But I can tell you this: Once you’ve experienced a driverless car, you will feel like you have stepped into the future.
