Last month, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) celebrated the grand opening of four retail stores in the domestic post-security terminal: Lolë, Brooks Brothers, Coastal News and Sea to Sky Marketplace. YVR has more than 170 shops, services and restaurants located before and after security, providing great shopping opportunities to travellers and the local community alike. These four new retail stores provide more apparel options as well as familiar iconic brands to YVR’s domestic travellers. The entire portfolio will further enhance YVR’s award-

winning concession program. “YVR is always looking to provide exceptional customer experiences and a big part of that is offering engaging and

diverse retail options,” said Scott Norris, vice president, commercial development, Vancouver Airport Authority. “We know that for many passengers their

Air Canada’s new livery features a black tail, engines and underside, along with the return of the circled maple leaf logo.

Passengers at YVR will soon be flying in new-look aircraft as Air Canada has unveiled a major makeover. Air Canada announced the new livery at three simultaneous events across Canada that also revealed new uniforms for all Air Canada employees. The updated look is meant to celebrate Canada and is in time for Canada’s 150th anniversary. “Air Canada’s new livery signals a pivotal inflection point in our 80-year history,” said Benjamin Smith, president, passenger airlines at the event in Toronto, where the airline’s largest hub is located. “On the occasion of Canada’s 150th anniversary year, with our new

livery, new uniforms for our employees, the awardwinning international cabin standard introduced with the launch of our Boeing 787 aircraft and enhanced onboard offerings, the future Air Canada represents the strength of our nation and the future-looking spirit of our airline.” Air Canada’s entire fleet of 300 planes will soon sport the new livery that features a black tail, engines and undersides. It also marks the return of the rondelle, the maple leaf in a circle logo, which is prominently displayed on the aircraft’s fin, fuselage and underbelly. The new look of the planes was designed by international design firm

Winkreative, headed by Canadian entrepreneur Tyler Brûlé. The airline’s current staff uniforms of dark blue with red lettering and logos are being replaced by those with a base colour of black or grey with red lettering and the maple leaf. Canadian designer Christopher Bates is responsible for the staff uniform transformation. Air Canada is currently upgrading its fleet with 23 new Boeing 787 Dreamliners, with 14 more coming in to service by 2019, and also buying at least 45 C Series jets from Bombardier. All of the airline’s new aircraft will be sporting the new livery.

trip starts right here at YVR and we hope these new offerings will give them a reason to arrive earlier and get their shopping done prior to flying out.”

Last year, YVR reached a record-high 22.3-million passengers and introduced 18 new routes and services to give passengers even more options when flying from Vancouver. This year, YVR will welcome even more passengers through the terminals while also adding exciting new routes and services and adding to popular destinations already served. Stars shine every day at YVR

There are many incredible people who go above and beyond to help give passengers and the airport community an amazing experience every day at YVR. These customer care ‘stars’ are airport workers and volunteers who help people navigate the terminal, sort out airline reservations, ensure luggage arrives promptly at the carousel and assist in countless other ways. These YVR Stars, Sea Island workers and volunteers who go above and beyond, are nominated by visitors and passengers and officially recognized through the airport’s YVR Stars program. In 2016, more than 500 nominations were sent to the YVR Stars program by email, interminal ballot or social media. These nominees were all invited to a YVR Stars gala, which was held to recognize their incredible efforts of service and at which

special awards were presented. Beyond, Every Day: Hassan El Haimeur, Marquise The nomination for this YVR Star was submitted by a customer who hadn’t realized they had forgotten a bag containing very important items on a baggage cart at the curb. With nothing but a hotel receipt as a clue, El Haimeur tracked down the passenger and reunited them with their baggage. The customer shared how extremely grateful they were for this YVR Star’s ingenuity and proactive customer service, since the contents of the bag would have been impossible to replace. Safety Award: Alan Mou, Carillion This YVR Star’s dedication to a safe work environment was recognized as being unparalleled. Mou is concerned about the welfare of everyone at YVR

and is always happy to share his knowledge and best practices. He is constantly looking for things that need to be repaired in the terminal. He often finds items that are out of his scope, but since he knows it needs to be fixed, he gets the work done. Security Award: Fabien Morere, Green Coat volunteer This member of the YVR community received new training with a focus on airport operations. One of the biggest learning objectives was security awareness around the terminal. Little did Morere know that he would apply his training to a real-life situation—notifying Airport Operations of suspicious activity and reporting a crime in progress. Morere mitigated a potential risk, maintaining a safe environment for everyone at YVR. Teamwork Award: Bob Bigelow, Securiguard;

the RCMP to assist with locating his family and paying his taxi fare home from their own pockets. “YVR’s customer care stars are a big reason why the airport has been voted Best Airport in North America seven years in a row,” said Craig Richmond, president & CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “These folks deserve a thank you.” Have you witnessed great customer care in action at YVR? Then nominate a YVR Star. Fill in a form at any Customer Care counter in the terminal. Submissions can also be made online via Twitter at @yvrairport using the hashtag #YVRStars, or at YVR.CA/YVRSTARS.

Red, white, blue and then-new: Fashion designer Michel Robichaud’s smartly designed red, white and blue uniforms graced aisles and airports from 1978 to 1986.

Last month, in addition to unveiling new aircraft livery simultaneously in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal, Air Canada also introduced new uniforms for its employees (top photo). Elegant charcoal grey and black uniforms with red accents and accessories designed by Vancouverborn fashion designer Christopher Bates were premiered. The stylish uniforms combining urban

chic and international flair complement the charcoal greys, natural tones and red accents featured in the new interior cabin design of Air Canada’s international fleet. The airline’s pilots, flight attendants, airport customer service agents and other uniformed personnel, comprising approximately two-thirds of its 30,000 global workforce, will start wearing their new uniforms later this year.

Last month, WestJet celebrated the tenth anniversary of its signature community investment program, WestJet Cares for Kids, with the release of its newest video, Celebrating 10 years of WestJet Cares for Kids. The video does the math on the number of flights the program has donated to its charitable partners since its inception in 2007. Through some serious arithmetic, the video’s young star demonstrates that over the past 3,650 days, the airline has donated 65,000 flights or approximately 18 flights per day to its partners.

“The math is simple: 65,000 gifts of flight through 10 years of WestJet Cares for Kids equals thousands of children and families benefited,” said Richard Bartrem, WestJet vice-president, marketing communications. “But the gift of flight is more than a ride on an aircraft. It’s a flight for a family to be with their sick child, it’s seats for investigators who are working to find missing children, it’s a journey that creates hope, and it’s the cost of air travel back in the pockets of our partners to continue their mis-

USAF Air Combat Command returning to 2017 Abbotsford Airshow

The F-16 Fighting Falcon is commonly called “Viper” by its pilots and crews due to a perceived resemblance to a viper snake.

Building on last year’s historic first appearance in Canada by a United States Air Force (USAF) Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter at the Abbotsford Airshow, the Air Combat Command has announced another scheduled appearance in 2017. The F-35 will return to this year’s Abbotsford Airshow, but this time patrons will see it fly as part of a Heritage Flight profile where the aircraft will make several passes in formation with historic aircraft from WW II and/ or the Korean War such as the P-51 Mustang and F-86 Sabre. In addition, an F-16 Fighting

Falcon will be appearing to perform a full demonstration of the speed, power and agility of one of the world’s foremost fighter aircraft. The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-seat, multi-mission fighter with the ability to switch from an air-to-ground to air-to-air role at the touch of a button. With its lightweight airframe and powerful General Electric engine generating 31,000 pounds of thrust, the F-16 can fly at speeds in excess of Mach 2. The F-16 and F-35 will join a line-up featuring the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF)

CF-18 Hornet demonstration, the Canadian Forces Snowbirds Jet Demonstration Team and the Canadian Army Skyhawks para demonstration unit. The Hornet is currently being painted in a special scheme to mark Canada’s Sesquicentennial, the 150th Anniversary of nationhood, and will roll out within weeks. Further announcements will be made of additional military and civilian featured performers at the Abbotsford International Airshow, which will be held from August 11-13, 2017. Visit abbotsfordairshow.com for ticket information.

Did You Know? In the mid-1970s, Abbotsford was designated as Canada’s National Airshow by Prime Minister Pierre E. Trudeau. The 1986 show was conducted in conjunction with Vancouver’s Expo 86 and included several European teams—the Patrouille de France, the Frecce Tricolori and the Soviet-Ukrainian Antonov AN-124.

Cathay’s Betsy Beer designed to be enjoyed at high altitude

The recipe of Betsy Beer is specially constructed with a combination of Hong Kong and UK-sourced ingredients.

Cathay Pacific has long sought collaborations with renowned partners, restaurants and chefs in order to provide its customers with innovative dishes and beverages as part of its philosophy of a Life Well Travelled. To that end, Hong Kong’s home carrier has launched Betsy Beer, the world’s first handcrafted bottled beer specially brewed to be enjoyed at high altitude. It isn’t a secret that cabin pressure and altitude affects passengers’ taste buds, but by using a combination of science and traditional brewing methods, Betsy Beer, which Cathay Pacific has produced in

characteristic of the beverage. Known for its aromatic properties, the fruit adds to the round, rich, textural properties that make the beer distinctive. This flavour is enhanced further by the inclusion of a small component of New Territories’-sourced honey in the brewing process, giving the beer agreeable floral notes, while the use of Fuggle, a revered hop and a mainstay of traditional British craft ales, lends it a pleasingly earthy and fullbodied flavour. Named after Betsy, Cathay Pacific’s first aircraft, a Douglas DC-3 which flew passengers around the

harness with Hong Kong Beer Co., is created with a combination of Hong Kong and UK-sourced ingredients, aroma and necessary carbonation to taste great both in the air and on the ground. “We know that when you fly, your sense of taste changes,” said Julian Lyden, Cathay Pacific general manager marketing, loyalty programme & CRM. “Airlines address this for food in certain ways. But nobody has ever tried to improve the taste of beer at altitude. That seemed like a great opportunity for us to help our beer-loving passengers travel well.” The inclusion of Dragon Eye fruit is a unique

region in the 1940s and 1950s, Betsy Beer will be first served to First and Business Class passengers onboard flights between Hong Kong and destinations in the United Kingdom until April 30, 2017. Betsy Beer will also be available at ground level at the airline’s lounges in Hong Kong and Heathrow, at a select number of Swire-owned restaurants in Hong Kong and through online purchase within Hong Kong at deli-delight.com. Boeing debuts 787-10 Dreamliner

The 787-10 Dreamliner is the newest and longest member of the 787 family.

Last month, Boeing debuted the 787-10, the third member of the 787 Dreamliner family. Built exclusively at Boeing’s South Carolina plant, the 787-10 is now being prepared for its first flight. “This airplane, the most efficient in its class, is

the result of years of hard work and dedication from our Boeing teammates, suppliers and community partners in South Carolina and across the globe,” said Kevin McAllister, Boeing Commercial Airplanes president and CEO. “We know our customers,

including launch customer Singapore Airlines, are going to love what the 787-10 will do for their fleets, and we can’t wait to see them fly it.” The 787 Dreamliner family is a key part of Boeing’s twin-aisle strategy. Since entering service in 2011, the

787 family has flown more than 140-million people on 530 routes around the world, with an estimated saving of more than six-billion kilograms of fuel. To date, Boeing’s 787-10 has won 149 orders from nine customers across the globe.

Unique high-flying creations available in Air France Business Class Starting this month, passengers travelling in Business Class on Air France flights from Vancouver, Toronto or Montreal will have a choice of three main meals that bear Michelin-starred chef Daniel Boulud’s signature. Originally from Lyon in France, Boulud has been praised for the contemporary touch he adds to his typically French cuisine, using quality ingredients to create the menus at his 16 restaurants. Boulud’s restaurants in Canada include Café Boulud at the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto and Maison Boulud at the Ritz-Carlton Montreal and up until 2011, Lumiére and db Bistro Moderne in Vancouver. Chef Boulud is now taking his considerable culinary

talent to the skies, creating a new dish each month for Air France’s Business class cabin menu. Inspired by the great French culinary traditions, Boulud’s dishes are enhanced with warm spices and flavours from the Mediterranean, the Basque Country and even Japan. Among the dishes are Salmon with fennel, chickpeas and Sumac; braised Chicken Basquaise with chorizo, peppers and saffron rice; and Braised Lamb with spring root vegetables. From now until February 2018, Boulud’s highflying culinary creations are available on Air France’s five weekly flights from YVR to Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport. Cold weather capabilities of Airbus A350-1000 tested in Iqaluit The latest member of Airbus’ all-new A350 XWB widebody

family has undergone rigorous ground and flight tests in the

northern Canadian territory of Iqaluit.

Iqaluit’s polar climate, caused by the Labrador Current, allowed Airbus’ longest-fuselage A3501000 version to face-off against one of the most challenging environments for an aircraft. The A350-1000 successfully completed five days of intensive testing at an outside air temperature that fluctuated between

minus-28 degrees and minus-37 degrees Celsius. “The A350-1000 has responded successfully to the ground and flight tests performed in the freezing temperatures of Iqaluit, which demonstrates the already proven maturity and reliability of the A350 XWB,” said Emanuele Costanzo, flight test

engineer at Airbus. All three A350-1000 flight test aircraft have been engaged in the type certification campaign. These latest tests come three years after the A350-1000’s sister aircraft, the A350-900, successfully overcame the uniquely challenging environment in Iqaluit.

The Northern Lights provided a picturesque backdrop for the Airbus A350-1000 as it performed ground and flights tests in the extreme operating conditions of Iqaluit, Canada. Photo: S. Ramadier.

Seven currencies, one Cash Passport Mastercard and Canada Post have launched Cash Passport, the latest payment solution for travellers. The contactless (tap) card allows up to seven currencies at a time to be loaded and can be used at millions of ATMs and merchants worldwide anywhere Mastercard is accepted. By pre-loading the Cash Passport card, travellers can lock in foreign currency exchange rates in advance, eliminating concerns about currency fluctuations during their trips. Sandman Hotel Group celebrates 50 years of hospitality This year, the Sandman Hotel Group is celebrating its milestone 50th anniversary. Starting from humble beginnings in 1967 with one location, the privately owned company has grown to include more than 50 hotels across Canada and the UK, with many more on the horizon, according to Tom Gaglardi, chairman and CEO of Sandman Hotel Group. Bob Gaglardi, Sandman Hotel Group’s founder, opened his first location in Smithers, British Columbia, a 35-room Sandman Inn. Close to main highways, it was a success with travellers seeking comfortable road-side accommodations and a good night’s rest. Between 1967 and 1976, Sandman

expanded both the presence and calibre of its accommodations, opening 14 locations in B.C. Adding a new tier to the company profile in 1976, Sandman opened its first central city location in downtown Vancouver. In the same year, Sandman also expanded into Alberta with the 150room Sandman Hotel Edmonton West. In 1981, Sandman opened its largest city centre hotel to date in downtown Calgary and another hotel in Lethbridge. Beginning in 1997 and for the next 20 years, Sandman saw a major growth in its profile with 20 hotels opening right across Canada, from B.C. all the way to Quebec. In 2007, Sandman Signature Hotels

& Resorts was established as Sandman’s entry into the four-star hotel market, with the opening of hotels at both Vancouver and Toronto airports. From 2010-2015, Sandman opened seven more hotels under the Sandman Signature umbrella, including two in the United Kingdom. In the next few years, Sandman will be opening hotels in Sherwood Park, Alberta; Hamilton, Ontario; Ottawa, Ontario; St. John’s, Newfoundland; Plano, Texas (Sandman’s first hotel in the United States); Aberdeen, Scotland (Sandman’s third hotel in the UK); and an additional tower at the Calgary Airport location. Samsonite developing luggage tracking solution Last year, more than 24 million pieces of baggage were lost world-wide. Fortunately, 95 per cent of them were found and returned to their owners. However, that leaves more than one-million items of baggage that have never been recovered. Samsonite and In The Pocket, a digital product studio, have introduced Track&Go, a product that is designed to address one of the traveller’s biggest frustrations—missing or lost luggage. The Track&Go solution is based on two principles—proximity alerts and geolocation. The proximity alerts integration provides the traveller

with a smartphone notification when their bag gets out of range. A builtin Bluetooth device in the suitcase allows its owner to trace the suitcase’s location using a Track&Go Travlr app. Samsonite is also trialling a new longer battery life and wider range technology called Narrowband-IoT (NB-IoT) with Vodafone, as an additional option for its Track&Go solution. Heathrow’s ‘Garden Gate’ designed to help passengers relax

Lufthansa trials video glasses in its Business Class lounge

Heathrow’s Garden Gate includes 1,680 plants, including the UK’s own English Ivy and the Peace Lily.

Heathrow Airport has introduced a new Garden Gate in Terminal 3 to provide a more relaxing environment for passengers. The Garden Gate consists of seven panels, each of which contains 240 plants. The main objective is to instil a sense of calm and comfort, after research showed a correlation between feelings of calmness and exposure to plants. The concept is being trialled for six months at Gate 25, which serves an average of 287,274 passengers per year. If it proves successful, Heathrow will consider creating Garden Gates at other departure gates across the airport. “With our new Garden Gate, our passengers can enjoy a natu-

ral sanctuary of rest and relaxation as they make their way through the airport, with 1,680 plants ready to see them on their way,” said Emma Gilthorpe, strategy director at Heathrow Airport. The Garden Gate is comprised of seven panels each containing 240 plants. Each plant panel is fitted with a water reservoir and nutrient system, which allows the wall to flourish for an extended period of time in an artificial environment. Advancements in LED technology enables indoor plant growth using less energy (e.g., more light and less heat). The plant selection is largely based on early research conducted by Dr Bill Wolverton on

behalf of NASA to prove that plants, namely the English Ivy and the Peace Lily, absorbed the air around them, translocated it to their roots, where organisms turned some air particles into food for the plant. “As the nexus of transit and technology, transportation hubs are ideal locations for green infrastructure to become an investment in public health and wellbeing,” said Richard Sabin, director of Biotecture, the company that installed the Garden Gate. “The world’s major cities are increasingly investing in green infrastructure, and the Garden Gate, both technically and ecologically, is cutting edge for its ease of installation, unique plant selection and LED lighting system.”

New online exhibit remembers Richmond’s fallen

Private John James Watson Abercrombie was employed by Boeing Aircraft on Sea Island before serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He arrived in France on September 1, 1944, and was fatally wounded on September 8, 1944.

A new online exhibit on the City of Richmond’s website pays homage to local soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War I and II and the Korean War. Entitled We Will Remember Them, this webpage provides background information on all 77 men who died in military service. The exhibit is separated into two parts. The first part, Lives Behind Memorial Road Names, has details on 56 soldiers who have both a Richmond street named

after them and are listed on the cenotaph located on the east side of Richmond City Hall. The poppyadorned street signs were installed around the city in November 2016. The second part, Lives Behind the Richmond Cenotaph, lists the remaining 21 soldiers memorialized on the cenotaph. The new webpage, created by the City of Richmond Archives, is available at richmond.ca/ cityhall/archives/exhibits/ remember.

Auto Talk

Canadian auto dealers band together to end distracted driving Customers walking through the doors of their neighbourhood auto dealership during the month of March may be asked to do more than check out the latest vehicle models. They will also be encouraged to take a pledge against driving distracted—a dangerous and growing trend that is responsible for four-million vehicle collisions a year in North America. In its third year running, March 1 marked the official start of the 2017 Auto Dealers Against Distracted Driving Campaign across Canada with hundreds of auto dealerships on board nationwide to participate. Auto dealers have committed to garnering more than 20,000 pledges from their customers, communities and staff throughout the month of March. Customers who visit participating dealerships can make a formal commitment to drive distraction free through an online pledge at distractionfree.ca or by Solution for March 2017 Crossword.

posting a personal pledge on their Twitter or Facebook pages at any time, using the #TakeTheWheel hashtag. Linda Leo, campaign champion at West Coast Kia in Pitt Meadows, B.C., is one of four featured dealers in the 2017 campaign. A demonstrated leader in previous years, Leo is once again committed to putting her ingenuity to task, using every resource available to make sure her customers are aware of how critical it is to remain focused while driving. “West Coast Kia has been an active participant in the Distracted Driving campaign since its inception and we look forward to engaging our customers again for a cause that hits close to home in our industry,” said Leo. “From my experience, it doesn’t take a lot to make a connection—a quick conversation or a little reminder combined

with a bit of passion has the potential to make a real impact for the cause in a short amount of time.” LGM Financial Services instigated the campaign in 2015 as a platform for Canadian dealers to influence consumers directly through their automotive retail point-of-sale. As a collective force, dealers have the ability to bring more awareness to a form of impaired driving that puts communities at risk—both drivers and pedestrians alike. “While we continue to see hundreds of dealers participate in the campaign year over year, our focus for 2017 is to provoke increased engagement between dealers and their customers through online pledges,” said Marc-Andre Lefebvre, vice president of sales for Quebec and campaign lead at LGM. The campaign aims to educate drivers on the easy and simple solutions to resist the urge to drive distracted, such as pairing to a Bluetooth device and securing potential distractions before starting a trip. Visit your local participating dealership or make an online pledge of support against distracted driving from home at distractionfree.ca or by using the #TakeTheWheel hashtag on Twitter or Facebook.
