Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has been voted Best Airport in North America for an unprecedented eighth consecutive year at the Skytrax World Airport Awards. Recognized as the global benchmark of airport excellence, the awards were voted in 13.8-million passenger surveys conducted in 550 airports around the world. This is the world’s largest independent airport customer satisfaction survey. It measured 39 elements in the airport travel experience, ranging from check-in to security and border clearance processes, comfort, efficiency, signage, transportation availability, passenger amenities and friendliness. “This impressive accomplishment is shared with the 23,000 people who work and

volunteer at YVR as well as our amazing community, passengers and partners” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “On behalf of YVR, I thank you and offer you big congratulations! I am so proud of the YVR team for breaking our own record of most

consecutive wins. This is particularly meaningful this year as we saw 22.3-million passengers come through our terminal [in 2016]—two-million additional passengers from the year before.” The Best Airport in North America award showcases the strength of the Canadian

Air Canada recently announced the introduction of a daily non-stop service between Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS). This new transborder seasonal route will operate from June 23 until September 4, 2017. The flight is timed strategically to connect with Air Canada’s Asian and South Pacific flights out of YVR. “It’s fantastic that Air Canada is opening up the Boston market for British Columbia,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “This was one of our most under-served cities and we are thrilled to be able to offer access to it this summer. Air Canada is a great partner

T H E

and has placed a lot of emphasis on expanding U.S. routes from YVR. This marks the sixth new transborder route announced by Air Canada in the last year, providing even more non-stop travel options and convenient connections for our passengers.” Boston is Massachusetts’ capital and largest city. Founded in 1630, it is also one of the oldest cities in the U.S. The new destination will offer British Columbians access to this popular east coast location for both holidays and business opportunities. Bostonians also make up a large cruise demographic and will benefit from the easy access to Vancouver’s port with YVR’s Cruise Program.

First time in Canada, Airbus A350-900 lands at YVR On March 28, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) celebrated the launch of Cathay Pacific’s increased service between Vancouver and Hong Kong with the first scheduled Canadian arrival and departure of an Airbus A350-900 aircraft. The state-of-the-art aircraft will service the YVR and Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) route, offering more direct flights and seats than any other airline, with 17 flights per week and an additional 87,360 seats annually from YVR. “I’m thrilled to not only celebrate Cathay Pacific’s increased frequency and continued success at YVR, but also the first Canadian arrival of the fantastic Airbus A350-900,” said Craig Richmond, president & CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority.

“It is exciting to see the continued growth of this route and opportunities that stem from it as YVR works towards building a world class sustainable gateway between Asia and the Americas.” The new increased frequency will provide more opportunities for B.C. businesses to connect with local markets in Hong Kong and other regions throughout Asia, while providing more options and flexibility for local and international travellers. The three additional flights per week will generate approximately 163 additional jobs in British Columbia both at the airport and in the tourism industry, $5.6-million in wages, $1.6-million in taxes and $8.6-million in Gross Domestic Product. YVR’s managing organization, is committed to creating an airport that British Columbia can be proud of: a premier global gateway, local economic generator and community contributor. YVR was also voted in the top three for Best Airport Staff Service in North America. In addition, the Fairmont Vancouver Airport Hotel was voted Best Airport Hotel in North America. To celebrate winning for eight consecutive years, YVR gave away eight free flights to any North American destination. “We are excited to link Vancouver and Boston with daily nonstop flights this summer, reducing two hours of travel time for customers travelling between the Canadian West Coast and the Greater Boston area,” said Benjamin Smith, president, Passenger Airlines, at Air Canada. “This new service will also offer customers from the U.S. northeastern seaboard convenient connections at our YVR hub to Western Canada and to our daily flights to both Sydney and Brisbane, Australia.” In addition to the new Boston service, Air Canada introduced ser-

vice to Dallas, Texas in February; Denver, Colorado on May 18, 2017 and is also increasing service to Los Angeles and San Jose, California to six and three times daily, respectively, both on May 1, 2017. Air Canada has also announced the following international routes out of YVR to launch later this year: Taipei, Taiwan; Nagoya, Japan; Frankfurt, Germany; and London Gatwick, England. Airbus A350900 from page 1 “As a province that works hard to promote trade and attract investment throughout Asia, we welcome these additional direct flights on Cathay Pacific’s important VancouverHong Kong route,” said the Honourable Teresa Wat, Minister of International Trade and Asia Pacific Strategy and Multiculturalism, Province of British Columbia. “Direct flights connect us easily across the Pacific, opening up new opportunities for business.” The new Airbus A350-900 is the quietest among the aircraft types in its class and is 25 per cent more fuel efficient, with corresponding reduction in emissions, with the latest generation Rolls Royce Trent XWB engines. The aircraft features a refreshed Business Class cabin and new Premium Economy and Economy Class seats that offer more space and comfort, panoramic windows and LED mood lighting. “Vancouver was the airline’s first destination in North America with our then state-of-the-art Being 747-200 aircraft being the first airline to fly non-stop between YVR and Hong Kong, so it is fitting that nearly 34 years later we are the first airline to debut the industry’s newest aircraft, the exciting Airbus A350900 in North America,” said Philippe Lacamp, Cathay Pacific senior vice president, Americas. “Even better, the Airbus A350900 helps us deliver on our promise of a “Life Well Travelled” with our latest three-class cabin product, enhanced inflight entertainment system and Wi-Fi connectivity.” The Airbus A350-900 has also provided an opportunity for Cathay Pacific to prove itself again as a leader in airline ecoinnovation. The cabin carpets and passengers’ blankets are made from recycled plastic and nylon, including plastic bottles and salvaged fishing nets that are otherwise a hazard for marine life. The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, has announced an Interim Order that will affect recreational drone operators. Effective immediately, the new rules address the increase of incidents involving recreational drones and are designed to prevent users from putting the safety of Canadians at risk. “YVR applauds Transport Canada’s continued efforts to address the dangers of recre-

ational drone use,” said Craig Richmond, YVR’s president & CEO. “Safety is our top priority and we are committed to working with our partners to ensure that drone operators understand and comply with the new rules.” Under the Interim Order, recreational drone operators must mark their drone with their contact information. Operators may not fly drones higher than 90 metres, within 150 metres

of buildings, vehicles or people and within 9 kilometres of the centre of any airport, heliport, aerodrome or water aerodrome where aircraft land. Any recreational operator who fails to comply with the new flying restrictions and conditions could be subject to fines of up to $3,000. “Transport Canada takes very seriously the increased risk to aviation safety and to people on the ground,” said the Honourable

Marc Garneau. “I’m concerned that the number of reported drone incidents has almost tripled from 41, when data collection began in 2014, to 148 last year. That is why we are proceeding with this Order, which takes effect immediately—to enhance the safety of aviation and the public while we work to bring into force permanent regulations.” In 2015, YVR launched its Drone Safety Program, which

aimed to highlight the risks associated with flying unmanned aircraft near airports. In addition to installing “No Drone Zone” signage at key locations across Sea Island, YVR will continue to work with Transport Canada and industry partners to ensure the public is made aware of the new drone rules. More information on the new rules is available at www.canada. ca/drone-safety.

Budget 2017 includes YVR develops next-generation kiosks to expedite border clearance new measures to help newcomers Budget 2017 includes new measures to help newcomers Many newcomers to Canada often face challenges in getting their credentials recognized so that they can find work. To help reduce employment barriers and support newcomers as they put their skills to work in the Canadian economy, the Canadian Government has introduced a Targeted Employment Strategy for Newcomers. The strategy, which was announced in the government’s recent Budget 2017, will have three components to help newcomers meet these challenges. Improved prearrival support services People who have been selected to immigrate to Canada will be provided with in-person and online services on how to adjust to living and working in Canada as well as help with the foreign credential recognition process before arriving in Canada. These services are expected to help newcomers develop realistic expectations about life in Canada, learn more about the labour market before arrival, and become job ready and self-sufficient more quickly. Loan program The Foreign Credential Loan Program, which is based on a previous pilot, will provide newcomers in need of financial assistance with loans to cover costs

such as licensing exams, training, travel and skills upgrading associated with getting foreign credentials recognized. Participants in the Foreign Credential Recognition loans pilot, launched in 2012, were able to accelerate the recognition of their foreign credentials, enter the job market, earn wages that were commensurate with their skills more quickly, and depend less on government transfers. Pilot project A new pilot project will also be launched to test innovative approaches to help newcomers get Canadian work experience in their professions. As part of Canada’s Innovation and Skills Plan, Budget 2017 also encourages lifelong learning; supports retraining and skills upgrading for Canadian workers, especially those from underrepresented groups, such as youth, Indigenous Peoples and women; and works with provinces and territories to help more Canadians find and keep good jobs. Budget 2017 proposes to commit $27.5-million over five years, starting in 2017–18, and $5.5-million per year thereafter for the new Targeted Employment Strategy for Newcomers. For more information on the Canadian Government’s services for newcomers, visit cic.gc.ca.

YVR’s proprietary line of self-serve border control solutions, BorderXpress, has been expanded to meet the requirements of Canada Border Service Agency’s (CBSA) new Primary Inspection Kiosk (PIK) program. YVR will roll out 90 new PIK configured BorderXpress Kiosks in spring 2017 to accommodate the growing number of incoming travellers. The new kiosks will allow passengers to scan their travel documents, complete their declaration card, verify their identity and admissibility using facial recognition technology before a final inspection by a CBSA officer. BorderXpress was developed by Innovative Travel Solutions, an independent business unit within YVR with more than a decade of experience in kiosk design, user experience, layout and flow analysis. The kiosks have proven to be a very efficient tool to reduce

border line ups, while at the same time strengthening the safety and security of borders. More than 1,050 kiosks are currently in use at 34 airport and seaport locations, processing over 100-million passengers to-date—more than any other provider.

BorderXpress can be easily configured to meet the needs of governments around the world looking to implement technology solutions to reduce border line-ups and improve the safety, security and integrity of its borders.

BCIT Aerospace Campus WOAW Week 2017 celebrated across the world Last month, as part of the receives CRJ100 aircraft 7th annual Women Of Aviation Worldwide Week (March 6-12), a broad range of aviation and space-related activities specifically designed to engage and inform women and girls took place in 148 venues scattered across North America, Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania. Powered by the Institute for Women Of Aviation Worldwide (iWOAW), the events are aimed to address the air and space’s industry deeply rooted gender imbalance. Girls of all ages are invited to discover the industry’s careers and hobbies within a welcoming environment and learn about women’s past and present contributions. During the week-long events, 53,000 attendees jumped at the opportunity to visit local industry facilities, meet female role models, try various skills and check out static aircraft displays. Nearly one-fifth of the 53,000 attendees 9,056 to be exact, went on a Fly It Forward flight—an introductory flight for women and girls who have not previously flown on any small aircraft. Studies and iWOAW’s annual feedback surveys show that women and girls are unlikely to consider the industry’s technical careers, traditionally presented as

The newest aircraft addition at the BCIT Aerospace Campus is the CRJ100 donated by Bombardier.

Bombardier Commercial Aircraft has donated one of its CRJ100 aircraft to the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) Aerospace Campus to serve as a teaching tool for students. Built in 1994, the aircraft spent many years in service across Europe before being retired and donated to BCIT. The CRJ100 is Bombardier’s first donation of a commercial aircraft to an educational institution. Since its launch in 1989, the CRJ Series family of regional jets has stimulated the regional jet market. In North America alone, it accounts for more than 20 per cent of all jet departures. Globally, the family operates more than 200,000 flights per month. During the recognition event

held at the BCIT Aerospace Technology Campus last month, Jim Sorokan, manager, asset management, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft, encouraged the participating students to ardently pursue their dreams of joining the aerospace industry while developing their skills training on the CRJ100 aircraft. “Industry partners like Bombardier are at the heart of the BCIT applied learning model,” said Paul McCullough, BCIT vice president advancement. “With their generous donation of the CRJ100 aircraft, Bombardier is equipping the next generation of aerospace professionals with an indispensable tool that will give BCIT students yet another competitive advantage upon graduation.”

men’s jobs, without an explicit invitation to do so. Since 2010, iWOAW’s Fly It Forward Challenge and Women Of Aviation Worldwide Week initiatives have successfully changed perceptions. For more than 80 per cent of nearly 200,000 participants to date, the impact went beyond a perception shift; it was life changing. In fact, 64% are now considering a career or hobby in the industry. Simultaneously reaching out to thousands of women and girls without age or affiliation restrictions is a staple of the WOAW movement. Each year, iWOAW awards titles and trophies to individuals and organizations who excel at materializing its goals of engaging as many women

and girls as feasible and offering them a quality experience. Throughout the WOAW Week, Fly It Forward pilots loaded their aircraft with women and girls to give them a chance to experience flight. They flew paragliders, ultralights, airplanes, and helicopters for more than 900 hours collectively. To win any of this year’s pilot awards, pilots had to take off and land at least 20 times. “What started in 2010 with just over 1,600 Fly It Forward flights has grown to directly touch the lives of 53,000 within just one week span,” says Mireille Goyer, iWOAW founder and president. “It is mind-boggling and very encouraging. We

are on track to change the face of aviation.” World record helicopter pilot Jennifer Murray will help remit the trophies to the winners at the Fly It Forward Award Luncheon during iWOAW’s upcoming 2017 Symposium in Vancouver, May 24-26. Next year’s Women Of Aviation Worldwide Week will be held March 5 to 11. The theme will be “Speed Demons: 65 Years of Supersonic Women,” as a salute to American pilot Jacqueline Cochran’s 1953 supersonic flight onboard a borrowed Royal Canadian Air Force Sabre jet. Harbour Air establishes new Pilot Training Award with BCAC

Harbour Air CEO Greg McDougall.

Harbour Air Seaplanes has established a new two-year sponsorship for advanced seaplane training, aimed at entry level commercial pilots. The award will be presented annually at the BC Aviation Council (BCAC) Silver Wing Awards and will offer approximately 50 hours of advance seaplane training leading to the endorsement and qualifications required to become a commercial seaplane pilot. The recipient of the award

will be a British Columbia pilot who has completed a minimum of 150 hours of flight training toward a Commercial Pilot Licence or has completed a Commercial Pilot Licence and is committed to pursuing a career as a commercial seaplane pilot. The flight training for this scholarship (valued at approximately $30,000) will be provided and financed by Harbour Air Seaplanes through its International Seaplane Training School. “This is a great step in

expanding our corporate award offering and this is the first BCAC award aimed at seaplane professionals,” said Heather Bell, Chair BCAC. Founded more than three decades ago by current CEO Greg McDougall, Harbour Air is North America’s largest seaplane airline, flying more than 425,000 passengers annually. The airline’s model is now being exported to other markets, including China, through Harbour Air International Consulting.

Boeing expands its Pilot Development Program

Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner completes first flight

Boeing has launched a global network of Boeing Training Provider flight schools to support its Pilot Development Program. The flight schools— International Airline Training Academy (IATA) in Napa, California; SAA International (SAA), a subsidiary of Velocity Education, in San Diego, California; and Avion Training, Netherlands—were subject to a rigorous review process before receiving final acceptance to be part of the Boeing Pilot Development program. “Boeing’s Pilot Development Program is built to provide customers with qualified first officers that seamlessly integrate

into airline operations,” said David Wright, Boeing Pilot Development Program director. “These three schools each bring unique characteristics to the industry to help fill the future pilot demand of Boeing’s diverse customer base.” In order to be considered for the training network, schools must prove a good safety culture, have a good industry reputation and have airline and crewfocused training. The Boeing Pilot Development Program is a fully integrated solution that takes cadet pilots through initial screening, English training, ab initio (basic classroom and flight

instruction), jet bridge and type rating training at Boeing Training Providers and Boeing training campuses around the world to ensure an efficient, consistent and effective pipeline for airlines to secure qualified first officers. Boeing will provide routine checks to ensure cadets are receiving Boeing’s high level of training. Boeing’s 2016 Pilot and Technician Outlook report projected a need for 617,000 new pilots in the next 20 years. That equates to nearly 31,000 new commercial airline pilots and more than 33,000 new maintenance technicians globally each year.

Last month, Boeing’s 787-10 Dreamliner took to the skies for the first time. The airplane, which is the newest and longest model of the 787 family, completed a successful flight totaling four hours and 58 minutes. The 787-10 will now undergo comprehensive flight testing before customer deliveries begin in the first half of 2018. “From takeoff to landing, the airplane handled beautifully and just as expected,” said Tim Berg,

chief 787 pilot. “The 787-10 is a fantastic machine that I know our customers and their passengers will love.” The 787-10 has won 149 orders from nine customers across the globe including launch customer Singapore Airlines, Air Lease Corporation, All Nippon Airways (ANA), British Airways, Etihad Airways, EVA Air, GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS), KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and United Airlines.

A 5.5-metre stretch of the 787-9, the 787-10 will deliver 25 per cent better fuel per seat and emissions than the airplanes it will replace. The 787 Dreamliner family is a key part of Boeing’s twin-aisle airplane strategy. Since entering service in 2011, the 787 family has flown more than 152-million people on more than 560 unique routes around the world, saving an estimated 14 billion pounds of fuel.

ReTrolley separates waste as it is collected in the aisle, reducing its volume by up to 30 per cent through manual compression. This saves space in the galley and increases the share of recyclable waste as airlines look for new and simple solutions that reduce the cabin’s ecological footprint. Only separated recyclable waste can be recycled. Smart Cabin Reconfiguration frees up space in A320 Family cabins without much effort. A member of the cabin crew can fold away one seat row and then quickly move those in front of it, just like a car seat. Passengers in these seats benefit from more legroom. Airbus received two additional awards for partnering in the Smart Onboard Wheelchair in the University category and the Octaspring Lightweight Seat Cushion in the Material & Components category. allows passengers with limited mobility to roll the wheelchair over the toilet seat unassisted. Structural changes to the aircraft lavatory are not required. Octaspring Lightweight Seat Cushion features coil springs made of foam using various levels of density to optimally distribute the passenger’s body weight over the entire seat. It also helps to keep the seating surface cool through better ventilation inside the cushion. This cushion is about a third lighter than an all-foam cushion, equalizes pressure and facilitates an ergonomic seating position. Did You Know? Airbus is working on a transparent plane that would offer passengers a 360-degree view as they fly.

BC pilots participate in Vimy Ridge centennial

Sopwith Pup Replica. Photo: Tim Felce (Airwolfhound).

Two replica Spowith Cub biplanes, built from scratch by volunteers at the Canadian Museum of Flight in Langley, B.C., are part of the Vimy Ridge centennial in France this month. Sopwith Cub biplanes were flown by Canadian pilots over the Battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917. Vimy Flight is led by Allan Snowie who now lives in

Bellingham, Washington. Other pilot members are Dale Earhart of Comox, Paul O’Reilly of Victoria and Peter Thornton of Chilliwack, BC. Other spare pilots are Larry Ricker and his wife Lucie of Moncton, NB, Bob Wade of Calgary, AB, David Wilson and Rod Ermen from NS. The Sopwith Pup was a

British single-seater biplane fighter aircraft built by the Sopwith Aviation Company. It entered service with the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service in the autumn of 1916. With pleasant flying characteristics and good manoeuvrability, the aircraft proved very successful. The Pup was eventually outclassed by newer German fight-

ers, but it was not completely replaced on the Western Front until the end of 1917. Though built to resemble the original aircraft, the replica Sopwiths use modern components and construction materials. The aircraft’s wooden frame has been recreated with aluminum and its Irish linen exterior with an industry-specific polyester called

ceconite, making the replicas much less flammable than the original versions. The Sopwith Pup replica aircraft will be joined at Vimy Ridge by a fleet of four Nieuport ‘Bebe’ scout aircraft from across Canada. The trip to France is part of A Nation Soars, a multi-part event, including documentaries, marking the part early Canadian aviators played in the First World War. With the cooperation of the Royal Canadian Geographic Society, the Canadian Geographic magazine and the collaboration of the Canadian War Museum and the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum A Nation Soars, designed by Sound Ventures Productions, tells the story in three segments. The first, titled Drawn to Victory will be a made-for-TV movie about the use of aviation in creating maps of the battlefield. The second project, called Wings of Courage will look at early Canadian aviation using the

construction of the two Sopwith Pups as the vehicle to introduce young adults into the field of aviation just like they did 100 years ago. The third project, titled Flight Path of Heroes, is the actual cross-country expedition of the aircraft on their return from France. It will begin at an east coast departure point, most likely Halifax, with the movement of the group through New Brunswick and Quebec to arrive in Ottawa in time to participate in the July 1, 2017 flypast over the parliament buildings for the 150th commemoration of Canada.

Commemorating the Battle of Vimy Ridge

Canada’s most impressive tribute overseas to those Canadians who fought and gave their lives in the First World War is the majestic and inspiring Canadian National Vimy Memorial in Northern France.

This month marks the 100th anniversary of The First World War Battle of Vimy Ridge, considered one of the greatest battles in Canada’s history. For the first time in the Great War all four Canadian divisions fought together on the same battlefield. Canadian valour and bravery brought about a fantastic victory, not only for Canadians but for the entire Allied Forces. Each year, visitors from around the world visit the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in Northern France to learn about and honour Canada’s sacrifices and contributions during the First World War. To help the monument tell this important story, a new Visitor Education Centre will be opened this month as part of events marking the centennial of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. This project is being realized with the support of Canadians from coast to coast to coast. In addition to the Government of Canada’s $5-million contribution, the Vimy Foundation is also contributing $5-million thanks to generous donations from the private sector and individual Canadians. A registered Canadian charity, the Vimy Foundation’s mission is to preserve and promote Canada’s First World War legacy as symbolized by the victory at Vimy Ridge in April 1917.

Air Transat’s special 30th anniversary livery

A specially painted, co-branded Alaska Airlines and Virgin America 737-900ER aircraft, painted in shimmering red, purple and blue and featuring the slogan “More to love,” was part of the merger celebration of Alaska Airlines and Virgin America.

Alaska Airlines, which closed its $2.6-billion merger with Virgin America in December 2016, has confirmed that it will retire the Virgin name sometime in 2019. However, the combined airline will adopt many of the brand elements that Virgin America enthusiasts loved, including enhanced in-flight entertainment, mood lighting and music. Additionally, a new uniformed designed by Seattlebased designer Luly Yang will be unveiled in 2019.

“Our goal from the very beginning of this merger was to become the go-to airline for people on the West Coast, with low fares, convenient flights, a premium product and genuine, caring service,” said Brad Tilden, CEO of Alaska Air Group. “Three months in, we’ve dramatically grown our presence in California and are united behind a new purpose: Creating an airline people love.” Alaska has been actively growing the airlines’ newly combined networks since closing the

merger in December. Earlier this month, the airline announced 21 new markets with 25 new daily departures out of San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles and San Jose, California – marking the largest addition of routes in the company’s history. Alaska Airlines and Virgin America along with their regional partners, fly 40-million customers a year to 118 destinations with an average of 1,200 daily flights across the United States and to Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica and Cuba.

Air Transat is marking its 30th anniversary this year and to commemorate the milestone has painted three of its Airbus A330-300 aircraft in a special livery. The colour scheme features a white front end and a light blue colour that starts behind the wing, gradating to sky blue at the tail with a logo that high-

lights the company’s 30-year history and the Transat Group’s star emblem. The three Air Transat aircraft will retain their anniversary markings for the duration of the year. Air Transat made its inaugural flight on November 14, 1987, travelling from Montreal to Acapulco, Mexico.

Korean Air and Delta to expand partnership Korean Air and Delta Air Lines have agreed to grow their partnership with an expanded trans-Pacific network. Highlights of the agreement, subject to regulatory approvals and signing of definitive contracts, include: The intent to create a fully integrated trans-Pacific joint venture with both airlines sharing the costs and revenues on flights and coordinating schedules for seamless, convenient connections. A combined network serving more than 290 destinations in the Americas and more than 80 in Asia, providing customers of both airlines with more travel. Enhanced frequent flyer

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines was founded in 1919, making it the world’s oldest airline operating under its original name. In 2004, the airline merged with Air France to form Air France KLM but retained the instantly recognizable bright blue coloured uniforms. In April 2010, KLM cabin and ground staff received a new uniform designed by famous Dutch couturier Mart Visser. While Visser was largely given a free reign in his design creation,

one of the stipulations was that he use the same KLM trademark blue material. Visser designed a capsule wardrobe of 11 items, including jacket, trousers, two styles of skirt and a scarf. “I see corporate uniforms as a company’s statement to the outside world,” said Visser. “The wearer should feel comfortable in my creation, further strengthening the KLM image.” KLM research showed that customers valued the KLM brand because it represented typical Dutch pragmatism. KLM responded to this by adding a touch of orange, the national colour, to its KLM blue. The orange features in the trimming on the lining of the uniform for cabin and ground attendants and in the uniform’s scarf.

Startup company plans for electric flights within 20 years

Wright Electric is only a year old and has a long way to go before its planes are operational. The image above is just a mock-up.

Wright Electric, a startup company backed by Y Combinator, is building a 150seat commercial passenger plane that runs on batteries and can handle flights under 482 kilometres. Y Combinator is Silicon Valley’s most highly regarded start-up incubator programme. Wright Electric’s goal is to make all short-haul flights electricpowered within the next 20 years. Short-haul trips make up 30 per cent of all flights—a $26-billion market. The company said that as well as lower fuel costs for the airlines, the technology could have a major added benefit for the public.

“Depending on how it’s designed, you can have an electric plane that’s substantially less loud than a fuel plane,” said Jeff Engler, Wright Electric’s co-founder. Wright Electric hired a team that had been previously funded by NASA to investigate the potential for electric planes that, according to Engler, puts the startup years ahead of the competition. Wright Electric is partnering with budget British airline EasyJet, which could put its design in the air. The plan for exactly how the planes will work depends on advances in battery technology and Wright is working closely with

American inventor Chip Yates, known for making the LongESA, the world’s fastest electric aircraft. Wright Electric’s competitors include aviation giant Airbus, which has been developing its electric two-seater plane E-Fan since 2014 and has stated plans to create its own short-haul electric aeroplane seating 70 to 90 passengers. Boom, a company backed by Sir Richard Branson, is developing a Concorde-like supersonic jet. It hopes to achieve London to New York in three-and-a-half hours, a journey which currently takes more than eight hours. It is expected to run test flights later this year.

Air Canada one of Canada’s Top Diversity Employers For the second consecutive year, Air Canada has been named one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers. The award is based on Mediacorp’s Canada’s Top 100 Employers project, which also included Air Canada for the fourth consecutive year for 2017. In naming Air Canada, Mediacorp Canada Inc. cited the airline’s success in promoting women, including in nontraditional roles. Mediacorp also noted that Air Canada maintains diversity committees across Canada in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. It cited Air Canada’s programs to encourage young women to consider aviation careers and noted that Air Canada hired 30 women pilots in 2016, up from 11 in the prior year. “Diversity is a powerful tool in business,” said Calin Rovinescu, president and chief executive of Air Canada. “Studies show that diverse groups generate greater creativity and innovation. It is also essential for attracting and retaining the best talent because people value inclusion and the receptive environment diversity creates motivates everyone to do their best work. “This is a particularly important attribute for a global airline like Air Canada that competes

with other international carriers for both customers and talent from around the world.” Air Canada reports on its progress with respect to diversity in Citizens of the World, Air Canada’s Corporate Sustainability Report. Highlights from the most recent report include: • There are an estimated 60 languages spoken by Air Canada employees and 20 per cent of employees belong to visible minorities • Air Canada employs more than 300 individuals selfidentified as disabled • Since 1993 Air Canada has been a sponsor of The Indspire Awards to recognize indigenous professionals and youth with outstanding career achievements. Recipients are chosen to serve as role models for all indigenous peoples • Air Canada has signed the Catalyst Accord, an undertaking sponsored by the internationally-recognized group, Catalyst, committing to increase the number of women on its Board of Directors to 25 per cent, which it did by May 2016. In newest prank, WestJet rebrands as Canada Air

WestJet rebrands as “Canada Air” for its 2017 April’s Fool prank.

April Fool’s jokes have become an annual tradition at WestJet and this year proved no exception at Canada’s second largest airline. In a new twist, WestJet released its April’s Fool prank a day earlier this year, lending even more credibility to a joke meant to poke fun at rival airline Air Canada as well as celebrate Canada 150. WestJet posted a blog on its website, complete with video showing the airline in new livery and rebranded as Canada Air, “the most Canadian Canadian airline.” In the video, Richard Bartrem, WestJet vice president, marketing and communications, laces up ice skates, eats poutine in front of a roaring fire and snowshoes across a mountain lake, all while outlining the company’s plan to rebrand. “We are proud to announce

Looking for Tires? We Recommend & Find the Right Tires for You FREE Wheel Alignment Service included with a set of 4 tires

that effective immediately, WestJet will be rebranded as Canada Air. The people who make up our brand and airline represent many of the Canadian values we are known for globally. Kindness, a great sense of fun, warmth, a desire to do the right thing and an incredible sense of caring are what

make Canadians Canadian and we believe it’s time for our name to reflect this reality. We are sorry we didn’t do it sooner.” Comments posted online at WestJet’s YouTube video revealed that once again many people fell for the airline’s annual prank.

In the past, WestJet has released April Fool’s pranks such as child-free cabins, onboard robots that deliver food and drinks to passengers and a “furry family” program that allows any type of animal to roam, graze, crawl or fly inside a plane’s cabin.

Fairmont Vancouver Airport is a soundproofed, luxury hotel and spa conveniently located within Vancouver International Airport. The hotel was recently voted the #1 Airport Hotel in North America for the third year in a row at the Skytrax World Airport Awards.

The introduction of a three per cent hotel room tax on July 1, 2017, will mean a financial boost for tourism in Richmond. The new tax rate, an increase from the current two per cent, was jointly agreed to by the City of Richmond, Tourism Richmond and the Richmond Hotel Association and will fund new initiatives promoting Richmond as a tourist destination. The City of Richmond has been partnering with Tourism Richmond and the Richmond Hotel Association to implement a new tourism development model with investments in destination product development and destination marketing. The new hotel tax agreement runs for five years and is expected to generate more than $21-million over its duration. The money generated from the hotel tax will support: • destination marketing by Tourism Richmond • the Richmond Sport Hosting Program

• destination enhancements for the Olympic Experience at the Richmond Olympic Oval and Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site and • tourism product development and sales by the Richmond Hotel Association Richmond is a growing tourism centre with 23 hotels offering 4,500 rooms. Its hotel revenues registered an all-time high of $186-million in 2016, a 12 per cent increase over 2015. Richmond had the highest hotel occupancy in Canada, at 83 per cent as of November 2016. The Municipal and Regional District Tax (MRDT) is legislated under the Provincial Sales Tax Act and jointly administered by the B.C. Ministry of Finance, the B.C. Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and Destination British Columbia. The tax can be up to three per cent and is applied to sales of accommodation in participating areas of British Columbia.

A double bill of critically acclaimed films will mark National Canadian Film Day 150 at the Richmond Cultural Centre on Wednesday, April 19, 2017. Hosted by the Richmond Media Lab, in collaboration with the Richmond Public Library, Minoru Place Activity Centre and Cinevolution Media Arts Society, the event will celebrate Canada’s culture through celebrated cinema. Movie fans of all ages are invited to a matinee screening at 4pm of Snowtime!, an animated adaptation of the FrenchCanadian family film, The Dog Who Stopped the War—a seasonal tradition for Canadian children for more than 30 years. The story, set in a mountain idyll where a group of children end up in a snowball fight, serves as an allegory for human conflict. Mina Shum’s break-out movie, Double Happiness, starring Sandra Oh as a feisty young Chinese-Canadian living a “double life,” screens at 7pm. The story plays with the competing identities of an aspiring actress who is both a respectful daughter from a traditional Chinese family and a modern woman attracted to a Caucasian graduate student. Double Happiness premiered at the Toronto International Film

Festival in 1994. Presented nationally by Reel Canada, a non-profit organization dedicated to the presentation of Canadian films, National Canadian Film Day 150 (NCFD 150) is a massive one-day celebration of Canadian cinema in honour of Canada’s sesquicentennial. Volkswagen Golf Alltrack named 2017 Canadian Car of the Year Volkswagen’s Golf Alltrack has been named the 2017 Canadian Car of the Year (CCOTY) by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). The Golf Alltrack also won in its category as the Best New Large Car. Eight Best New category winners were eligible for the top honours of Canadian Car of the Year. Hyundai was a double winner and other category winners included BMW, Buick, Chrysler, MercedesBenz, Subaru and Volkswagen. The eight Best New categories cover the full new-model spectrum, including Best New Small Car, Best New Sports/Performance Car and Best New Utility Vehicle. Most of these core categories are then further broken down into Small, Large and Premium to cover a

wide range of types of vehicles. “It is such a great honour to have AJAC name the new Volkswagen Golf Alltrack as their Car of the Year,” said president and CEO of Volkswagen Group Canada Inc, Maria Stenström. “By adding our 4motion all-wheel-drive to the Golf SportWagen, Canadians now have a fantastic new alternative to choose from.” The VW Golf Alltrack retails from $35,295. CCOTY entrants were put through a rigorous testing program by more than 60 automotive journalists, which included real-world driving on public roads so that the test data and vote results were directly relevant to potential car and utility vehicle buyers. Auto Repair and Maintenance By Bernie Pawlik

Air bag system: simple repair, hard diagnosis A 2003 Mazda Tribute was brought to our automotive shop for diagnosis of the car’s airbag warning light. An illuminated air bag warning light may be the result of several factors, but the most important thing to know is it means the air bag won’t deploy in the event of an accident. A car’s airbag system is quite simple—it consists of a few sensors, a module that interprets the signal and an airbag that has an element that allows for rapid deployment by a small charge placed in the bag. Over time, these sensors can wear out and become defunct. While performing our diagnosis on the Mazda Tribute, we found the lamp would not light at all and also discovered two ‘trouble’ codes stored in the airbag’s computer system. The light issue was solved by removing the instrument panel and replacing a dead bulb—this also solved one of the trouble codes stored in the airbag computer. We then focused on the other ‘trouble’ code that indicated a problem with the passenger’s side air bag. The diagnostic procedure included looking at our scan tool data while testing the

side air bag module, its wiring and connections. The maximum resistance allowed in this circuit is 3.4 ohms. Our scan tool reading was 3.2 ohms—very close to the maximum. The ohm is the standard unit of electrical resistance. Interestingly, the driver’s side had the same reading. Further testing of components revealed no other concerns. What we had was either an intermittent problem with a connector or component. Airbag systems are very sensitive to poor connections and these are common causes of air bag lights being illuminated. To ensure good connections, Stabilant 22, a contact enhancer that creates a good-as-soldered connection to the terminals at the side airbag connecter, was applied. The results on the scan tool

AGNEM E N G I N E S E R V I C E S LT D

said it all—resistance was now 2.2 ohms, very safely below maximum specification. The liquid was applied to the driver’s side with the same result. This simple fix will likely prevent a future airbag light concern. Not all airbag lights are due to this issue, but some airbag problems require professional diagnostics equipment, so if you think that your car has a fault, it’s best to consult with a mechanic who possesses the necessary skills and tools.
