On December 15, 2017, Vancouver Airport Authority celebrated the launch of Flair Airlines’ new services at Vancouver International Airport (YVR). Flair Airlines is an ultralow-cost carrier that will offer non-stop services between YVR and Kelowna International Airport (YLW) and Edmonton International Airport (YEG), as well as continued service to Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ) from YEG. “We are pleased to welcome Flair Airlines to YVR, providing more connections to Canadian cities while giving travellers more options to visit family and friends over the holiday season and throughout the year,” said Anne Murray, vice president marketing and communications, Vancouver Airport Authority. “We are really excited that this local, B.C.-born airline can help serve our vision of connecting B.C. proudly to the world with new options to connect through our hub. We know that more choices and affordable airfares are

Airlines is based in Kelowna, B.C. In addition to its domestic scheduled service, the airline also supplies ad hoc charter and large aircraft contract services.

Since last year, Flair has flown more than 376,600 passengers on more than 3,090 flights, with plans to operate 12 aircraft by spring of 2019 as its network expands. “Flair Airlines is excited to begin operating from Vancouver International Airport,” said Chris Lapointe, vice president commercial operations, Flair Airlines. “We believe strongly that in this market there are thousands of people who are looking for low airfare travel options and we are thrilled to be the airline to provide that for them. By operating direct flights from Vancouver to Edmonton and Kelowna, plus one-stop service to Toronto, we believe this is a great start to our routes operating from Vancouver.” New flight services such as these are made possible because of YVR’s ConnectYVR rates and charges program, which provides a highly competitive rate structure and includes rates lower than any other major airport in Canada and competing US airports.

Last month’s Holiday Hamper Drive at YVR produced a record 53 per cent increase in holiday hampers for Quest Food Exchange.

During the 2017 holiday season, YVR and Quest food Exchange partnered for the 7th annual Holiday Hamper Drive, which ran from November 16 to December 7. Hampers flew in from all over Sea Island and it was thanks to the entire community, including YVR’s neighbours and business partners, that this was possible. In 2016, more than 700 hampers were collected. Last month, that record was surpassed when a total of

1,077 hampers were collected—a 53 per cent increase from the previous year. YVR’s ongoing Community Investment partnership with Quest Food Exchange has helped make quality food more accessible to the local community and the Sea Island community’s generosity has helped more than 1,000 families experience a true holiday meal this past season. Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and Sunwing celebrated the start of Sunwing’s new, seasonal service to Montego Bay Jamaica – Sangster International Airport (MBJ) on December 16, 2017. This marks the only direct route from Vancouver to this exciting destination. “We are thrilled to welcome a great new route from our friends at Sunwing,” said Anne Murray, YVR’s vice president marketing and communications, Vancouver Airport

Authority. “This new service marks our only direct flight to Jamaica, an amazing destination that offers an incredible getaway for our passengers. I would like to thank Sunwing for making this possible and for providing more connections and benefits for our passengers.” The new seasonal service will operate once a week, from December 19, 2017 to April 17, 2018, using a Boeing 737-800 aircraft with 189 seats.

Chapel volunteers decorated the YVR Chapel and provided a welcome to all visitors, complete with home-made goodies and apple cider.

Last month, in keeping with the Christmas season, chaplains and volunteers at YVR Chapel hosted several unique events for the Sea Island community and airport visitors. Chapel volunteers made homemade goodies and apple cider to share with airport employees and YVR travellers. During a three-week period, more than 60 people visited the Chapel each day, making December the Chapel’s best month for connecting with the Sea Island community and airport visitors. This month, the Chapel will begin the New Year by offering two new events designed to continue its connectivity with the Sea Island community. Members of the community who frequent the Chapel or support its mission are invited to attend and learn about its plans. The Friends of the Chapel Open House event will be held on Saturday, January 20 from 1pm-3pm in the Domestic Terminal Sea-Sky Boardroom. Along with Chinese snacks and music, several silent auction items, including gift certificates to The Keg and Monk’s Grill restaurants, will be part of the event. There will also be an update from Dave Parson, YVR customer care manager, who will share the airport’s plans for 2018

Airbus has completed assembly of its first A321neo ACF (Airbus Cabin Flex), the latest addition to its A320 Family. By applying modifications to the fuselage, the ACF allows more flexible cabin configurations for up to 240 passengers. Compared to the previous A321 variant, the most visible modifications are a new rear section and a modified passenger

door configuration, where the door located forward of the wing is removed and new overwing emergency exits in the centre section are introduced. The aircraft, powered by CFM LEAP-1A engines, will undergo ground tests prior to its scheduled first flight. First delivery of an A321neo ACF to a customer is scheduled for mid-2018.

The A321neo ACF is the base for a longer-range variant known as the A321LR. The first delivery of an A321LR is targeted for the fourth quarter of 2018. Incorporating the latest engines, aerodynamic advances and cabin innovations, the A321neo offers a reduction in fuel consumption of at least 15 per cent per seat from day one and 20 per cent by 2020.

Japanese lunar exploration company ispace is planning to inject its lander into the lunar orbit in the fourth quarter of 2019. Mission 2, planned for the fourth quarter of 2020, will see the lander attempt a soft landing on the Moon.

Japan Airlines (JAL) and Tokyo-based lunar exploration company ispace have agreed to form a capital and business alliance. In correlation with its “Embrace New Challenges” slogan, JAL has been sponsor-

ing Japan’s first privately funded lunar exploration team managed by ispace since 2015. Through the new alliance, JAL will engage in further space development “to contribute to the betterment of society” and pursue space travel opportunities

Throughout 2018, the International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations (IFALPA) will be celebrating the 70th anniversary of its founding. IFALPA was established in 1948 by national pilot associations from around the world to ensure pilots would have a voice in the newly formed United Nations specialized agency, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Significant improvements in aviation safety, human performance and security are the result of IFALPA’s work with ICAO, regulators and other industry stakeholders. Over the past seven decades, IFALPA has been a strong advocate for aviation safety on behalf of more than 100,000 airline pilots in nearly 100 countries, providing representation, services and support to both its members and the aviation industry. Air Canada has renewed its sponsorship as the Official Airline of the Canadian Olympic Committee and Canadian Paralympic Committee. The four-year agreement extends through the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games. “As Canada’s official airline,

while they’re abroad, and helping to make sure they arrive ready to perform at their very best.” Air Canada has been a sponsor of Canada’s Olympic Team since 1988 and a sponsor of Canada’s Paralympic Team since 2007. Through these arrangements, the airline provides special services and transport for competitions. As well, under the

renewed agreement Air Canada will: • Renew its Altitude Podium Program to provide qualified athletes 35K status and access to International Maple Leaf lounges while competing abroad • Give athletes individual Care & Share packages for added comfort during the flight and include memorabilia they can share with others at the games

Travel Talk New rules for electronic devices at U.S. points of entry

New rules are now in place that require U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents to have “reasonable suspicion” of criminal behaviour to carry out advanced searches of electronic devices held by individuals entering or exiting the U.S. While U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents will be able to continue to examine data stored on a device, they will

need to demonstrate a reasonable suspicion of criminal intent or a “national security concern” to further analyze that data. Further analysis includes connecting a smartphone to an external device to inspect or copy its contents. According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency, 30,200 inbound and outbound border searches of elec-

tronic devices were conducted in 2017, approximately 0.007 per cent of more than 397-million arriving international travellers who were processed by border officers. By comparison, in 2016, 0.005 per cent—more than 18,400—of more than 390-million arriving international travellers had their electronic devices searched.

World’s first flying sports car prepares for takeoff If you’ve dreamed of the day you could go from driving down the road and, like the Jetsons, take to the skies, this may soon become a reality. Samson Motors of Central Oregon, creators of the Switchblade—the world’s first flying sports car—has successfully completed grueling suspension testing in preparation for a spring 2018 launch. The dynamic vehicle has the looks of an Italian sports car and was featured in the Ultimate Gift Guide from luxury lifestyle magazine, Robb Report, in its December 2017 issue. Entitled “Cutting-Edge Flying Car,” the article highlights the unique features of the Switchblade as a high-performance vehicle on the ground and in the air. “We started from the beginning with the purpose to design a flying car that provided high performance in both modes,” said Sam Bousfield, CEO of Samson. “Instead of asking ‘how do you make a car fly?’, we asked ‘what layout should a flying/driving vehicle have?’ and designed a vehicle based upon that layout.” Actual field testing and wind tunnel data may back up their claims. A ground prototype out-performed a Jaguar XK8 in headto-head acceleration testing. The version slated to go into production next year has the power-toweight ratio of a 2017 Corvette. “I think racing is definitely in our future,” said Bousfield,

Expanded Canadian air transport agreements The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, recently announced that Canada has successfully concluded new and amended air transport agreements with Ethiopia, Cameroon, South Africa, Qatar and Morocco. The amended agreement with Ethiopia allows designated carriers to offer up to five flights per week (up from three). The new agreement with Cameroon, as well as amended agreements with South Africa and Qatar, makes it easier for the operation of code-sharing flights between Canada and these countries. Code-sharing occurs when an air carrier sells seats on a flight operated by another air carrier, allowing it to expand its network and product offerings. The amendment to the agreement with Morocco provides flexibility for both own-aircraft and code-share services. The new rights under these new and amended agreements are available for use by airlines immediately.

Heathrow brings detailed terminal maps to Apple Maps Heathrow Airport, the second busiest in the world, is used by more than 80 airlines flying to just under 200 destinations in 94 countries. A primary hub for British Airways, Heathrow has four passenger terminals and a cargo terminal. Heathrow has collaborated with Apple to make detailed maps of its terminals available on Apple Maps. Using Apple Maps on an iPhone or iPad, passengers can navigate through the airport and pinpoint shops, restaurants and other points of interest. The Heathrow terminal maps in Apple Maps will be updated regularly to ensure accuracy including when new store loca-

Air Canada and Air China will expand their mutual codeshare services and lounge agreement in time for the 2018 Canada-China Year of Tourism, which recognizes the importance of tourism and trade between the two countries. The expanded codeshare cooperation is planned to come into effect in April 2018, subject to regulatory and government approvals. The two Star Alliance carriers have also launched their first joint frequent flyer promotion to offer Aeroplan and PhoenixMiles

members up to 30 per cent bonus miles for eligible travel between April 1, 2018 and June 15, 2018 on all Canada-China flights operated by Air Canada and Air China. The codeshare expansion will allow Air China to place its code on Air Canada’s flights from Vancouver to Victoria, Kelowna, Saskatoon, Regina and Montreal-Shanghai. Air Canada will place its code on Air China’s flights between Beijing and Zhengzhou, Xiamen, Shenzhen and Nanjing as well as Air China’s flight between

Montreal-Havana, Cuba. Both carriers have also implemented an expanded lounge agreement. In addition to Star Gold customers, all Air China First and Business class customers will now have access to Air Canada’s recently upgraded International Maple Leaf Lounges featuring enhanced food and beverage offerings at Vancouver and Montreal airports. Air Canada’s eligible customers will continue to enjoy access to Air China’s lounges

Last month, a Star Alliance chief executive Board meeting in Beijing celebrated Air China’s 10th anniversary as a member of the global airline alliance. During the meeting, Air China, Star Alliance and Beijing Capital International Airport signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to colocate Star Alliance carriers in

the same terminal building at Beijing Capital International Airport. In addition, it was agreed that more self-service facilities would be added to improve the passenger experience, including curbside check-in, self-service baggage drop-off and self-tagging kiosks. In 2007, Air China became

a Star Alliance member. Since then, the airline has collaborated closely with Star Alliance and its members to achieve win-win outcomes. By pooling route choices and ground services, member airlines can provide better passenger service through streamlined transfers, while cutting costs and offering greater efficiency.

Up to 12 Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft ordered by anonymous buyer

Last month, a Bombardier customer, who has requested to remain unidentified at this time, signed an order to acquire six CRJ900 aircraft, with options on six additional CRJ900 regional jets. Based on list price, the firm orders would be valued at approximately US$290-million. Should the six options for CRJ900 aircraft be exercised, the contract value would increase to approximately US$580 million. “In the last five years, more than 25 new airlines have joined the family of CRJ Series operators, and this is testament to the tremendous value this aircraft can deliver to customers thanks to its unmatched performance and economics,” said Fred Cromer, president, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. The CRJ Series aircraft family includes more than 120 owners and operators in more than 90 countries.

n 2017, YVR continued to engage with the airport community, welcoming new airline partners and setting a record for passenger traffic. Key events at YVR were reported in SkyTalk and following is a compilation of the Top 20 Photos of 2017 noteworthy events.

1 A380 at YVR with a stunning Vancouver sunset as backdrop British Airways’ A380 aircraft touched down throughout the busy summer season on its London Heathrow (LHR) to YVR route. The Airbus A380 has the largest wings ever built for a passenger airliner—772 square metres in size and 54 per cent larger than the wings on a Boeing 747. During takeoff the A380 wing will flex upwards by more than four metres.

Air New Zealand’s haka performance on the YVR tarmac Air New Zealand celebrated its 10th year of flying between Vancouver and Auckland in November with a traditional haka performance. The haka song and dance was performed on the tarmac at YVR and showcased New Zealand’s Maori heritage and cultural identify. It was a unique and powerful way for Air New Zealand to celebrate a successful decade of connecting two beautiful countries—Canada and New Zealand. 2

3 Aerial photo of YVR’s newly installed Apron LED lighting system A new custom apron lighting system to enhance efficiency and streamline operations was installed at YVR last year. The state-of-the-art LED lighting system was retrofitted onto YVR’s existing structures and features patented glare-control technology so that high-quality light is applied only where needed and darkness is preserved where light is not intended.

YVR Flight Crew enjoyed Canada 150 celebrations across the Lower Mainland Last year, Canada celebrated its 150th anniversary with a host of activities taking place throughout the province and across the country. As a community-based organization, YVR supports events and organizations and dispatched its YVR Flight Crew to participate and celebrate many of the summer Canada 150 celebratory events. 4

5 Sustainability commitment means a visit to Swishwash Island A YVR community team visited Swishwash Island as part of YVR’s commitment to the environment, sustainability and nature conservancy. Swishwash Island, located in the middle arm of the Fraser River, is only one kilometre from YVR’s

south runway. The island belongs to the Nature Conservancy of Canada and is home to a wide diversity of waterfowl, including some 50,000 snow geese that spend the winter or migrate through on their way south. 6 Cathay Pacific A350 inaugural landing in Canada In March, YVR celebrated the launch of Cathay Pacific’s increased service between Vancouver and Hong Kong with the first scheduled Canadian arrival and departure of an Airbus A350-900 aircraft. The aircraft provided an opportunity for Cathay Pacific to prove itself as a leader in airline eco-innovation: the cabin carpets and passengers’ blankets are made from recycled plastic and nylon, including plastic bottles and salvaged fishing nets that are otherwise a hazard for marine life. 7 China Airlines introduces Airbus A350 aircraft on Taipei-Vancouver route China Airlines began flying its Urocissa caerulea liveried A350 aircraft to YVR in August. The Taiwan Blue-Magpie (Urocissa caerulea), an endemic species found only in Taiwan, appears on the fuselage of China Airlines’ liveried aircraft, along with Tung blossoms in bloom.

8 Hong Kong Airlines greeted with a water arch welcome Hong Kong Airlines made its inaugural daily direct service to Vancouver on June 30. To commemorate the launch of the new route, the airline held celebration events at both Hong Kong International Airport and YVR. 9 YVR president and CEO demonstrates his kung fu moves for Jackie Chan International movie icon Jackie Chan was the celebrity ambassador for Hong Kong Airlines’ new non-stop flight between Hong Kong and Vancouver on June 30. Known for movies that highlight his martial-arts skills, the airport’s communications staff put together a martial-arts video featuring Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority, prepping to battle him. Chan also participated in Canada Day celebratory events on July 1 and did a meet-and-greet for departing Vancouver passengers bound for Hong Kong. 10 YVR’s snow operations team worked extra hard in 2017 to remove snow and get passengers on their way Each year, YVR begins preparations for the winter season in late summer. storm, YVR uses up to 80 pieces of snow-removal equipment to keep the airport’s runways, taxiways and aprons safe for aircraft and passengers. Inaugural flight of Mexico’s Interjet Airline celebrated with festive piñatas Interjet launched year-round, four-times weekly service between YVR and Mexico International Airport (MEX) and Cancún International Airport (CUN) on October 26. The new service creates easy access and new connections from Mexico City to Central America destinations. 11

Roaming party celebrates Best Airport in North America Award In 2017, YVR was voted the Best Airport in North America at the SkyTrax World Airport Awards for a record eight years in a row. Considered the global benchmark of airport excellence, the SkyTrax World Airport Awards were voted on by 13.8-million passenger surveys conducted in 550 airports around the world. The survey measures 39 elements in the airport travel experience ranging from check-in to security and border clearance processes, comfort, efficiency, signage, transportation availability, passenger amenities and friendliness. 12

14

13 Best of the best at 2017 World Routes Marketing Awards In addition to the Best Airport in North America Award, YVR was overall winner at the World Routes 2017 Marketing Awards. The awards are voted for by airline professionals who nominate the airports and destinations that provide outstanding support during the launch of new air routes or the development of existing services.

YVR Socks program launched to help homeless youth In partnership with Covenant House, the YVR Socks program was launched in November. YVR socks are available for purchase at yvrsocks.ca and for every pair purchased, on pair will be donated to Covenant House. Clean socks are in constant need by those living on the street and Covenant House distributes donated socks to youth at their Drop-In Centre, as well as handing them out on the streets to homeless youth. 14

with a new way to deal with anxiety associated with travel, work and general stress. YVR partnered with St. John Ambulance and their Therapy Dog program to provide seven dogs for the LASI initiative. The dogs are easily identifiable with their YVR-branded leases and St. John Ambulance bandanas. 16 Second annual YVR Chill Out festival During the summer, families came out in droves for the airport’s popular family-fun event that included performances by some of Vancouver’s best musicians, as well as food trucks and interactive activities. 17 Air Canada plays a large part in YVR’s year of growth A year of unprecedented growth at YVR included the launch of several new flights by airline partner Air Canada. In addition to launching new services to Dallas, Orlando, Boston, Nagoya, Taipei, Frankfurt, Yellowknife and Melbourne, Air Canada unveiled new aircraft livery and elegant new uniforms for its employees. 18 WestJet includes YVR in its Christmas event WestJet included YVR in its Christmas Miracle video when retired CBC news anchor Peter Mansbridge read ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas to passengers at YVR.

20

Mansbridge, who anchored CBC’s The National for 30 years before retirement, participated in a 12 Flights of Christmas seasonal WestJet stunt, during which the airline stages unique events in airports across Canada. 19 New Air Canada service to Yellowknife Air Canada’s new livery on its Bombardier CRJ705 aircraft was captured during a perfect winter sunset on the airline’s inaugural Yellowknife flight. Air Canada’s new service to the Northwest Territories marks the only non-stop service linking Canada’s spectacular Northwest Territories and Vancouver. The route’s daily seasonal service operates until April 2018. 20 Significant agreement between Musqueam Band and YVR The Musqueam Indian Band and YVR signed a momentous 30-year agreement based on friendship and respect to achieve a sustainable and mutually beneficial future. Some of the details of the Agreement include a path of education to employment with several scholarships and new jobs, one per cent of annual revenue from YVR, identification and protection of archeological resources and support for ongoing operations and long-term development at the airport.

The first structurally complete airframe for the new BelugaXL has rolled off the Airbus assembly line. Once operational, a fleet of these next-generation airlifters will be used to transport completed sections of Airbus aircraft among the company’s European production sites and to final assembly lines in France, Germany and Spain. The BelugaXL is one of the most voluminous aircraft in existence and everything about it speaks to that fact. With a bulging upper forward fuselage and enormous cargo area, the BelugaXL is hardly recognizable as the outsized airlifter version of the Airbus A330-200 jetliner from which it is derived. “We have the A330 as a foundation, but many changes

have been successfully designed, introduced into the aircraft and tested,” said Bertrand George, head of the BelugaXL program. “Transforming an existing product into a super transporter is not a simple task.” This initial BelugaXL is expected to be flying by mid-2018. “The whole team is really looking forward to seeing its first flight and, of course, its smiling livery,” said George, referring to the supersized smile that will be painted across the ‘face’ of the transporter. Months-long ground testing of the aircraft will begin after installation of its two jet engines, ensuring each of the BelugaXL’s systems function as intended. While the first structurally complete BelugaXL moves into

its testing phase, the second A330 to be converted into a BelugaXL will begin its integration process. With lessons learned from the production of the first transporter, the assembly time for the second is expected to be about two months shorter. The BelugaXL program was launched in November 2014 to address Airbus’ increasing transport requirements. At six metres longer, one metre wider and with a payload lifting capacity six tonnes greater than the BelugaST transporter version it is replacing, the BelugaXL will be able to transport both wings of an A350 XWB jetliner at once, instead of the single wing currently accommodated on the BelugaST. All told, five BelugaXLs are scheduled to enter service for Airbus’ airlift needs.

Boeing leads industry for sixth straight year

Boeing’s 777X series was launched in November 2013 with two variants: the 777-8 and the 777-9. Photo: courtesy Boeing.

Boeing delivered more commercial airplanes than any manufacturer for the sixth consecutive year and set an industry record with 763 deliveries in 2017, driven by high output of its 737 and 787 jets. At the same time, the company grew its backlog with 912 net orders, reflecting healthy demand for its single-aisle and twin-aisle airplanes. Boeing reached a new high on its 737 program, raising production to 47 airplanes a month during the year. It also began delivering the new 737 MAX, contributing to a record 529 deliveries, including 74 of the MAX variety. On the 787 Dreamliner program, Boeing continued building at the highest production rate for a twin-aisle jet, leading to 136

deliveries for the year. “The record-setting performance is a testament to our employees and supplier partners who continue to innovate new ways to design, build and deliver the most fuel-efficient airplanes to customers around the world,” said Boeing Commercial Airplanes president and CEO Kevin McAllister. On the orders front, 71 customers placed the 912 net orders, valued at US$134.8-billion at list prices. The total extended Boeing’s

backlog to a record 5,864 airplanes at the end of 2017, which is equal to approximately seven years of production. “The strong sales activity reflects continuing strong demand for the 737 MAX family, including the ultra-efficient MAX 10 variant that we launched last year, and the market’s increasing preference for Boeing’s family of twin-aisle jets,” said McAllister. “Our planned production increases over the coming years are designed to satisfy this robust demand.”

In 2017, Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner family racked up nearly 100 net orders and its 777 family captured 60 net orders, as

shown in the table below. Other major commercial airplanes milestones include the first flights of the 737

MAX 9 and the 787-10 Dreamliner and the start of production of the 737 MAX 7 and the new 777X.

Visitors to the festival will be able to wander through multiple zones in and around the Richmond Cultural Centre where they can enjoy fun performances for kids of all ages, participate in handson arts and crafts or sign up for Creativity Classes led by professional artists General festival admission allows participants to wander through the Sonic Garden and Art Alley where there will be live performances by Big Easy Funk Ensemble, Kutapira, The Blues Berries, Magic 2 Go, Circus West and others, plus enjoy pop up performances throughout the site. They can also roll their sleeves up at the festival’s numerous Imagination Stations and create everything from tie dye t-shirts to scratch animation with Cinevolution. More than 30 artist-led Creativity Classes will give participants access to a hands-on interactive class led by a professional artist, with classes in a wide range of visual and performing arts such as puppet making, hip hop music, clay creations and more. Registration is required for all Creativity Classes and the fee includes General Admission. In celebration of the 10th anniversary, local children will also have some special opportunities to shape and participate in this year’s festival programming. New to the festival this year will be a cardboard challenge inspired from a documentary film, Caine’s Arcade, that featured a cardboard arcade created by a nine-year-old in East Los Angeles.

Festival participants can create their own arcade games from cardboard and other recycled material. There will be a sneak preview event at Lansdowne Centre on Saturday, February 3 from noon to 3pm including a mini arcade atmosphere with fun music and balloons. The top 10 games from the Lansdowne event will be featured at the festival on Family Day. Youth will also have a chance to run away to the circus. Circus West will be visiting local classes to give students a peek into the world of circus. A few of the students participating will be incorporated into the performance with the Circus West cast, to be given the opportunity to perform at the festival in front of a live audience. General festival admission is $5. Advance sales of general festival admission passes are now available at Lansdowne Centre; visit Customer Service during mall hours to purchase (cash only. While the older 240D and 300D models featured a small, noisy diesel engine, they had bulletproof reliability, with some still on the road today. Today, Mercedes offers their BlueTec diesel, which incorporates the most modern technology—low exhaust emissions,

When you look over the history of automobiles, much modern technology has been birthed by Mercedes and adopted by the rest of the automobile industry. Part of this may be due to the higher price point of these vehicles, which allows for more expensive options to be

For most of car manufacturing history up, until the late 1950s, cars used DC (direct current) generators. While they generated electricity, they did so in a complicated and inefficient manner. Mercedes introduced the alternator on their vehicles and within a few years this became the industry standard. The same can be said for airbags, first introduced in the 1981 S-class sedans. Next time you pull up beside one of these vehicles, roll down your window and listen—you can barely tell that it’s a diesel engine. I’m often asked if Mercedes Benz vehicles are expensive to fix? with these components they can be very costly. Mercedes vehicles (as sold in North America) are all full-featured luxury cars and along with that there is more to go wrong. On the plus side they are well built and typically last longer than many other cars. On the “no” side of expensive-to-fix are many basic service items, such as brakes that are no more expensive for a Mercedes than they are for a Toyota, in fact they are often cheaper.
