YVR and Destination Canada promote tourism PG 5 Airlines:

Starting May 25, 2018, Hainan Airlines will begin twice-weekly service to Vancouver International Airport (YVR) from Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (SZX), via Tianjin Binhai International Airport (TSN). Headquartered in Haikou, China, Hainan Airlines has received the Skytrax 5-Star Airline Rating for seven consecutive years and continually ranks as one of the World’s Best Airlines. The airline’s network includes more than 1,400 international and domestic routes to more than 110 destinations. “It’s great to start the year with the

announcement of a new airline partner,” said Craig Richmond, president & CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “As the first airport in Canada offering service to Shenzhen and Tianjin, the route will provide direct access to new markets for business travellers and offer more options for leisure travellers exploring China. The addition of Hainan Airlines brings the total of Mainland Chinese carriers to seven plus Air Canada, further strengthening YVR’s position as the connecting hub airport between Asia and the Americas.” The route will be operated using an

Airbus 330 with a seat configuration of 32 Business class and 260 Economy class seats. Hainan Airlines will depart from YVR at 11:30am and arrive at TSN at 2:15pm (+1), before continuing the journey. The flight arrives at SZX at 7:45pm. “We are delighted to announce this new service from Shenzhen to Vancouver via Tianjin at the beginning of the China-Canada Tourism Year,” said Jichun Liu, vice president of Hainan Airlines. “Following our Toronto-Beijing and Calgary-Beijing routes, this new Vancouver service

demonstrates Hainan Airlines’ confidence in the China-Canada civil aviation market. The new route will provide passengers with more travel options and convenience. It will also further strengthen the economic, educational and cultural exchanges between the two countries.” New services such as this are made possible because of YVR’s five-year airline rates and charges program, ConnectYVR. The program offers some of the lowest landing fees to airlines to attract and incent them to grow sustainably at YVR.

Air Canada is expanding its current seasonal non-stop VancouverDelhi flights to year-round operation. The route has been highly popular for British Columbia’s local population and as a result, starting June 8, 2018, passengers will now have access to the Air Canada service throughout the year. This route is made possible by advances in aircraft technology, which allows lighter aircraft to fly further while requiring less fuel.

Air Canada operates a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner configured in three cabins with 30 International Business class lie-flat suites, 21 Premium Economy and 247 Economy class seats. Air Canada has had enormous success growing its transpacific hub out of YVR, launching 10 new services in 2017, alone. Later this year, Air Canada will launch additional non-stop services out of YVR to Paris, France; and Zurich, Switzerland.

Change is in the Air at YVR

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is well-positioned to meet and exceed its goal of serving 25-million passengers by 2020. Longer-term forecasts estimate 35-million passengers will travel through YVR annually by 2037. This growth will require significant changes to the airport. There are several key projects starting in the coming months that will enhance the airport experience. This includes YVR’s

biggest sustainability projects to date, new parking options, terminal expansions and much more. Some projects visible on Sea Island this month: • Construction nearing completion on YVR’s new Value Long Term lot at the Templeton Canada Line Station (see Parking Changes at YVR on page 3). This parking lot will provide more options for customers

and will replace the current Value Lot scheduled to close on February 28, 2018. For more information about parking options at YVR, visit yvr. ca/parking. • Hoarding is in place around carousels 22 and 23 in the customs hall. Work is being completed to increase space for CATSA Plus, a high-performance security screening system.

Construction Update

• Hoarding near gates D55 and D58 for a terminal expansion project to help increase capacity. • There will be various curbside enhancements taking place including work performed on glass windows and the sidewalk along the Departures level. This project will continue into the spring. For more information, please visit yvr.ca/construction.

Wheelchair basketball promotes social change and public awareness The start of a New Year is the perfect time to be inspired to try new activities and the BC Wheelchair Basketball Society (BCWBS) is an organization that encourages just that. Wheelchair basketball is perfect for anyone who would like to try an exciting activity in 2018. In addition to wheelchair basketball being a fast-paced and dynamic sport, it is also a vessel for social change and public awareness. In collaboration with YVR, a video was created to showcase the inclusivity of both the adapted community and able-

bodied athletes within the sport. The annual BCWBS Hoopfest, which will be held on May 17 at the Richmond Olympic Oval, provides an

opportunity for individuals to try out the inclusive sport of wheelchair basketball and interact with athletes who directly benefit from the event.

Hoopfest is BCWBS’s largest annual fundraiser, with tournaments held between corporate, non-profit and municipal organizations to raise funds for furthering programs and providing equipment for BCWBS’s initiatives. YVR will be participating as one of the presenting sponsors for the fourth year in a row. To learn more about the BC Wheelchair Basketball Society, please visit bcwbs.ca for news, updates and opportunities to try wheelchair basketball in 2018.

With record passenger growth at YVR in 2017, current facilities are nearing capacity and as a result several multiyear expansion projects are taking place to enhance the airport experience and ensure that future demand is met. As part of the expansion plan, YVR is developing a variety of new parking options to improve capacity, efficiency and customer satisfaction. This includes a new state-of-

the-art parkade to meet future demand. YVR will close the Value Lot to make room for the new parkade and open a Value Long Term lot, located at Templeton Station on the Canada Line, to replace the existing offering. Once completed, the new parkade will feature several sustainability initiatives including a rainwater harvesting system, electric vehicle charging stations and an automated guidance system

that will help reduce emissions, as drivers will no longer have to circle for a spot. Entry to Value Lot will close on February 28, 2018 with all vehicles having to be removed by March 14, 2018. The Value Long Term lot, will open on March 1, 2018. It will be YVR’s most economical choice for parkers and offer easy access to the terminal via the Canada Line (free travel on Sea Island) or if during off-hours, a

shuttle bus service. The Value Lot offers the lowest parking price per day at YVR, with both drive-up and reservation price points. Starting in February 2018, customers will be able to book online at yvr.ca and receive a further price discount with BCAA memberships (approximately 15 per cent off regular reservation rates). Alternatively, online customers can choose to receive 250 Aeroplan points if they are

an Aeroplan member and qualify by booking for four days or longer. The popular jetSet Parking, which is located only minutes from the Domestic and International terminals, will continue to be offered at YVR. A courtesy shuttle bus runs every 15 to 20 minutes, 24-hours a day. For more information on parking options and to book online, visit yvr.ca/parking.

YVR Chapel Open House draws crowds Last month’s Friends of the Chapel Open House drew many volunteers and YVR employees to the event and provided to learn more about the Chapel’s mission, activities and future. In addition to delicious food, auction items and music, the event included a stimulating visual presentation by Dave Parson, manager airline and government client relations, Vancouver Airport Authority, on the airport’s achievements and its plans for 2018 and beyond. Chaplain Dennis Kirkley presented a special gift to volunteer June Redekop, who retired after 21 years of service at the Chapel. Volunteers Tina Peters and Simon and Luce Klaver hosted a ‘fun-raiser’ silent and live auction that raised $500. These funds will be used by the Chapel towards its operating costs. The Chapel’s ongoing fundraising raffle is also drawing crowds as tickets are being snapped up for a chance to win a grand prize WestJet Travel Package for two and a night at the Fairmont Airport Hotel with breakfast. Tickets are only $10 and are available at the Chapel, Level 2, International Arrivals (across from Tim Hortons). Only 1,000 tickets will be sold up until February 13, 2018. The big draw will be held on Valentine’s Day, February 14, at noon in the Chapel. Representatives from WestJet

Airlines is based in Kelowna, B.C. In addition to its domestic scheduled service, the airline also supplies ad hoc charter and large aircraft contract services.

Since last year, Flair has flown more than 376,600 passengers on more than 3,090 flights, with plans to operate 12 aircraft by spring of 2019 as its network expands. “Flair Airlines is excited to begin operating from Vancouver International Airport,” said Chris Lapointe, vice president commercial operations, Flair Airlines. “We believe strongly that in this market there are thousands of people who are looking for low airfare travel options and we are thrilled to be the airline to provide that for them. By operating direct flights from Vancouver to Edmonton and Kelowna, plus one-stop service to Toronto, we believe this is a great start to our routes operating from Vancouver.” New flight services such as these are made possible because of YVR’s ConnectYVR rates and charges program, which provides a highly competitive rate structure and includes rates lower than any other major airport in Canada and competing US airports.

Last month’s Holiday Hamper Drive at YVR produced a record 53 per cent increase in holiday hampers for Quest Food Exchange.

During the 2017 holiday season, YVR and Quest food Exchange partnered for the 7th annual Holiday Hamper Drive, which ran from November 16 to December 7. Hampers flew in from all over Sea Island and it was thanks to the entire community, including YVR’s neighbours and business partners, that this was possible. In 2016, more than 700 hampers were collected. Last month, that record was surpassed when a total of

1,077 hampers were collected—a 53 per cent increase from the previous year. YVR’s ongoing Community Investment partnership with Quest Food Exchange has helped make quality food more accessible to the local community and the Sea Island community’s generosity has helped more than 1,000 families experience a true holiday meal this past season. CATSA Plus high-performance checkpoint comes to YVR

The x-ray image review process is done by screening officers, who are located in a remote room away from the distractions of the checkpoint.

The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) is responsible for security screening of people and baggage at Canadian airports. While its priority is security, the agency continually strives to improve the screening experience for passengers. As such, CATSA Plus, a new pre-board screening system designed to achieve more efficient and effective screening, is currently being rolled out at major airports across Canada. An innovative screening solution that combines the latest

screening equipment, technologies and processes, CATSA Plus is the result of technology trials run in partnership with Canada’s airports over the past several years. The first CATSA Plus installation at YVR was at the International checkpoint serving D gates. Three lines were installed during May and June 2017, with the work completed in time to welcome passengers during the busy summer travel season. CATSA worked closely with the Vancouver Airport Authority

to minimize any impacts on passengers. This included scheduling work to avoid peak travel times. In fall 2017, CATSA Plus installation work began at the Domestic South checkpoint serving A and B gates. The first two CATSA Plus lines for this checkpoint were installed during October and November. There was a planned break in December during the busy holiday travel season, with work resuming last month to install two more lines to complete the conversion. An additional three CATSA Plus lines are planned for YVR’s International checkpoint in 2018, bringing the total to six. Other plans for the first part of 2018 include the commencement of work at YVR’s Transborder Connections (intransit pre-clearance facility) and Vancouver Link (International to Domestic connections) check-

points, which will each be receiving two CATSA Plus screening lines. Advanced features of CATSA Plus lines include a continuous X-ray belt (minimizing stop and start), remote X-ray image review, motorized bag diverters with split lanes and a motorized bin return system. CATSA Plus also improves passenger flow by addressing

some common traffic bottlenecks that occur during the screening process. A parallel divest area allows four passengers at a time to prepare their belongings for screening. At these divest stations, passengers who have just a few items or can get their items into bins quickly are able to bypass others who may need more time. After the bins flow through

Canada to test technologies to support secure and seamless global air travel During last month’s World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Navdeep Bains, Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development announced that the Government of Canada will pioneer the testing of the Known Traveller Digital Identity system to improve security and the

seamless flow of people across borders. The Known Traveller Digital Identity system employs emerging digital technologies, such as advanced biometrics, cryptography and distributed ledger technologies, to give travellers control over, and the ability to share their information—via personal

mobile devices—with governments and travel providers to expedite travel. Canada will work with the Netherlands to design a proof-ofconcept pilot project to explore opportunities for demonstrating the benefits that these technologies can offer. “Emerging technologies have astounding potential to transform and enhance the global travel security system,” said Minister Bains. “The Known Traveller Digital Identity prototype will help enable governments, businesses and travellers to work together to improve security and the seamless flow of people across international borders.” By 2030, international air arrivals are expected to reach 1.8-billion passengers, a 50 per cent increase from the 1.2-billion arrivals recorded in 2016. To accommodate this growth the public and private sectors will need to address infrastructure, as well as procedures regarding the processing of travellers, while at the same time maintaining security. The launch of the Known Traveller Digital Identity prototype is the first step in an ambitious roadmap for public and private sector leaders to transform the border-crossing experience for legitimate travellers.

No kidding!

Last month, a Norwegian Air flight travelling from Oslo to Munich had to turn back shortly after takeoff due to problems with the aircraft’s toilets. While 85 of the plane’s passengers were plumbers, the toilets could only be fixed by accessing the exterior of the plane. Naturally, this was not an undertaking any of the plumbers wanted to attempt mid-flight. Once the plane landed, technicians were easily able to fix the problems and the plane made it to Munich later that day.

YVR and Destination Canada sign historic agreement to promote tourism and trade Vancouver Airport Authority and Destination Canada have signed a Memorandum of Understanding designed to strengthen the relationship between the two organizations and to align strategic priorities in air service development, tourism and business opportunities throughout Canada. “This agreement is great news for Canadian tourism,” said the Honourable Bardish Chagger, Minister of Small Business and Tourism and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons. “Following Canada 150, and what I expect will be the best year ever for Canadian tourism, this agreement will help bring more tourists to experience all of the great sights and activities our country has become known for around the world. It lays the foundation for what will be another strong year for our industry and partners, as we cel-

It encourages both organizations to share knowledge, expertise and market intelligence to support each other in reaching their respective goals. It also agrees to cooperate in marketing

programs in countries of mutual interest, including China, to support destination growth and the growth of key airline partners. “As the gateway for 25 per cent of all international travellers to Canada, YVR is an important partner for Canada’s tourism industry and we’re looking forward to expanding that partnership,” said David F. Goldstein, president & CEO, Destination Canada. “Under this important

agreement we will align our marketing and share our research and data insights for a competitive advantage.” In 2016, YVR partnered with several tourism partners, including Destination Canada, to create a “Team YVR” approach to better support new and existing airline partners. This Memorandum of Understanding builds on the partnership, further improving

YVR’s overall aviation business. It also strengthens the Canadian economy, with every new flight creating new jobs and contributing to Canada’s GDP and taxes. “We are very excited about this agreement with Destination Canada, which allows us to strategically align our priorities in target markets to benefit not only YVR but also our airline partners,” said Craig Richmond, president & CEO, Vancouver

New Vancouver-Tofino service from Pacific Coastal Airlines B.C.-based regional airline Pacific Coastal Airlines has announced its 2018 spring schedule, which will be in effect from March 4 to June 3, 2018, and which includes a new daily, nonstop flight between Vancouver and Tofino. The new Tofino service begins on Tuesday, April 3 and will operate seven days a week, departing YVR’s South Terminal at 3:15pm and arriving at Tofino/Long Beach Airport (YAZ) at 4pm. It departs YAZ at 4:30pm, arriving at YVR at 5:15pm. “This new route is a natural fit for our airline and introduces

greater capacity and improved service to Tofino, Ucluelet and the surrounding area,” said Quentin Smith, president Pacific Coastal Airlines. Pacific Coastal will use a 19-seat Beechcraft turboprop aircraft to service the 45-minute flight route. The airline plans to upgrade to larger 30 or 34-seat Saab 340A or 340B aircraft, should demand increase. “As an airline that got its start in Bella Coola, we understand the importance of quick, convenient, and affordable travel between smaller communities and larger

hub cities in British Columbia and we will be working hard with key stakeholders in Ucluelet, Tofino and the entire region to earn their support,” said Smith. In addition to the new Vancouver-Tofino route, the new 2018 spring schedule is designed to create better connections between some of the other destinations within Pacific Coastal Airlines’ network, improve ontime performance and adjust seat capacity to better meet local demand. In addition to the new Tofino route, some of the changes to the 2018 spring schedule include: • Williams Lake: Most flights each week between Williams Lake and Vancouver (more

than any other airline). Improved connections between Williams Lake and Victoria. • Port Hardy: Twice daily morning and afternoon

flights between Port Hardy and Vancouver to enhance business travel connections to/from Vancouver. • Masset: Return of the Saturday flight between

Vancouver and Masset starting May 4, 2018. For more information or to book your flight, visit pacificcoastal.com or contact your travel agent.

Bombardier wins against Boeing in USITC ruling

Bombardier’s C Series family of aircraft are designed for the 100- to 150-seat, single-aisle market.

Last month, the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) ruled in favour of Canadian transport company Bombardier, eliminating 292 per cent in duties on its C Series commercial jet and voting 4-0 against the petition filed by Boeing that it suffered harm from prospective imports of Bombardier’s C Series aircraft.

The decision, which came as a surprise to many observers who believed the ruling would be in favour of Boeing, caused Bombardier’s stock to rise to its highest level in three years, with shares gaining almost 15 per cent. In a press release, Bombardier called the decision “a victory for innovation, competition and

low prices. According to Boeing those trade violations by Bombardier “harmed the U.S. aerospace industry.” Boeing is currently pursuing a potential agreement with Brazilian aerospace company Embraer, preparing to offer an aircraft that will compete with the Bombardier C Series.

Vancouver to become newest Lufthansa A350-900 destination

Starting May 1, 2018, Lufthansa will service its route to Vancouver on A350-900 aircraft.

The first 737 MAX 7 is pulled into position for its debut at Boeing’s Renton, Wash. factory.

Earlier this month, Boeing celebrated the third and newest member of its 737 MAX family to come down the assembly line. The MAX 7 is designed for up to 172 passengers and a maximum range of 7,130 kilometres, which is the longest range of the MAX airplane family. Technology improvements allow the MAX 7 to fly 1,852

kilometres farther and carry more passengers than its predecessor, the 737-700, while having 18 per cent lower fuel costs per seat. The first MAX 7 will now undergo system checks, fueling and engine runs on the flight line in Renton, Washington. The airplane, the first of two MAX 7 flight test airplanes, will begin its flight

testing program in the coming weeks. The 737 MAX 7 is scheduled to enter service in 2019, following delivery to launch customer Southwest Airlines. The 737 MAX is the fastestselling airplane in Boeing history, accumulating more than 4,300 orders from 92 customers worldwide.

A330neo one step closer to joining Airbus test fleet

Freshly painted Airbus A330-800, the newest member of the A330neo Family.

The newest member of A330neo Family, the A330-800, has rolled out of the Airbus paint shop, on track for its first flight in mid-2018. The A330-800 is the new generation 250-seater from Airbus’ twin-aisle family aircraft. Building on the success of the A330-200 with more than 600 aircraft in operation, the A330-800 brings new-generation economics and comfort to the

250-seat aircraft market. Together with the larger 300-seat A330-900, they share 99 percent commonality, having the same airframe, engines and cross-crew training. Both widebody aircraft incorporate new Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, zero-splice nacelles, titanium pylons, new wings and new Airspace by Airbus cabins. The most visible new features of the A330neo

wings are the specially developed curved wingtip Sharklets, which draw on A350 XWB technology, extending the wingspan to 64 metres and providing state-of-the art aerodynamic characteristics. Close to 1,400 A330 aircraft have been delivered to 118 customers worldwide on a wide range of routes, from domestic and regional flights to long-range intercontinental services.

Lufthansa has welcomed its seventh A350-900, a plane with the registration D-AIXG, to its fleet. After a short downtime for upgrading, the “Mannheim” will take off this month on its first scheduled flight. With a total of seven A350900 aircraft in its fleet, Lufthansa will be offering its customers six new destinations with these aircraft in its summer flight schedule, including Vancouver on May 1, 2018.

“When the summer flight schedule goes into effect, our passengers will be able to enjoy flights on the world’s most modern long-haul aircraft to six additional destinations,” said Wilken Bormann, CEO Hub Munich. “The A350-900 is quiet and fuelefficient, with a cabin that won the German Design Award.” In late 2017, Lufthansa won the “German Design Award 2018” in the category “Excellent Product Design”. The jury commended the creation of a

unique travel environment. The Economy Class of the A350-900 has seats in various shades of blue and offers passengers additional comfort. The seats have new ergonomic cushions and more space for storing personal items. Lufthansa’s A350-900 seats 293 passengers: 48 in Business Class, 21 in Premium Economy and 224 in Economy Class. Lufthansa has ordered a total of 25 of these state-of-the-art jetliners.

Lufthansa introduces new blue-and-white livery Lufthansa is Germany’s largest airline and one of the five founding members of Star Alliance, the global airline network. The Lufthansa name is derived from Luft (the German word for “air”) and Hansa (a Latin term meaning “guild”.

The Lufthansa logo, an encircled stylized crane in flight, was first created in 1918 by Otto Firle, an eminent German graphic designer and architect, who also created logos for the German postal and railway service. The design was part of the livery of the first German airline,

This month, the first major change to the world’s oldest airline logo in more than 50 years will be seen on Lufthansa aircraft. The new livery features a redesigned tailfin with a white crane logo on a blue background in place of the current blue-andyellow design. The aircraft’s grey underbody is replaced with white. The crane is a highly symbolic bird in may cultures with records dating back to ancient times. Lufthansa describes its stylized bird as a symbol for expertise, open-mindedness and quality. Over the last century, the Lufthansa logo has become one of the world’s most recognizable trademarks and today it represents the first and only European five-star airline.

Travel Talk Globetrotting with just two stopovers now possible A whirlwind globetrotting trip, stopping only at two destinations for at least 24 hours, is now possible using selected Star Alliance Round the World (RTW) fares. In the past, a minimum of three stopovers was required for all RTW tickets. This change increases the number of itineraries available under the RTW product for travel on the Star Alliance network. “By enabling round-theworld travel with only two stopovers, we are increasing the attractiveness of the Star Alliance Round the World fare product,” said Janice Antonson, vice president, commercial and communications, Star Alliance. “Customers will now find it easier to build their bespoke routing choosing from the vast offer provided by our 28-member airlines, operating more than 18,400 daily flights, connecting 1,300 destinations in 191 countries.” The Star Alliance Book & Fly tool, available in English, German and Japanese, allows customers to plan their RTW journey from the comfort of their home, 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. Those wishing to share their travel plans can do so via email or the integrated social media functionality. Once all flights have been booked, electronic tickets can be easily issued via the online tool. Alternatively, customers can contact any Star Alliance member airline or a travel agent to book and purchase an RTW ticket.

RTW fares are generally an attractive value for money proposition, especially when compared to individual one-way tickets on separate airlines for the same journey. The total price of an RTW ticket is dependent on class of travel, the precise itinerary, mileage and routing selected, as well as currency exchange rate fluctuations. In terms of distance, customers can create an individual itinerary covering up to 41,000, 46,000, 54,000 or 62,000 kilometres. To put these distances into perspective, the circumference of the Earth measured at the Equator is approximately 40,074 kilometres. Customers can build their own routings within the maximum mileage of the selected fare level. Travel needs to begin and end in the same country and be in one direction, either going East or West, although some zigzagging is permitted within a single continent. Both the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean must be crossed once. In addition to building an itinerary from scratch, customers can also choose from a

range of themed RTW journeys, which include World Food, World Wonders, Architecture Hotspots, Nature Trail, Aquatic Wonders, Connecting Cultures, Natural Wonders, Sports Hotspots, Wine Tasting, Romantic Journey and Luxury Lifestyle. In the case of a themed journey, the Star Alliance Book & Fly tool automatically loads a suggested routing, which the customer can adapt to their needs. Stopovers of at least 24 hours must be made in a minimum of two cities and the overall itinerary may include up to 15 stops. As part of offering greater choice to RTW travellers, certain RTW special fares are also available, requiring at least three stopovers and allowing a maximum number of stops that range from five to 12. The Star Alliance RTW fares are available for travel in First, Business, Premium Economy or Economy Class and are valid for 12 months. More than half of RTW travellers fly in Business Class, more than a third opt for Economy Class and around eight per cent for First Class. Visit staralliance.com/bookfly for complete details.

International Women’s Day celebration includes female NASA astronaut at Abbotsford event The annual The Sky’s The Limit: Girls Fly Too events, in celebration of the week of International Women’s Day, will be held from March 10-11 at the Abbotsford International Airport. Each year, women of all ages and their families gather from far and wide for a truly unique mission of discovery. Support from agency, industry and community partners allow the events to be offered completely free of charge, ensuring that there are no barriers to participation. One of the unique attractions are free flights for female firsttime fliers. The first flight experience is often the catalyst that is needed to inspire interest in Aviation, Aerospace, Marine & Defence and other STEM-based (science, technology, engineering and math) fields. This year’s event will include a visit by U.S. Navy helicopter pilot and star-conquering NASA astronaut, Wendy Lawrence,

who will share some of her experiences. When the Apollo 11 crew landed on the Moon on July 20, 1969, Lawrence, then 10 years old year, watched on a black-and white-TV from 393,309 kilometres away. That’s when she decided to become an astronaut. From that day, Lawrence applied herself heart and soul towards her goal. After graduation from the US Naval Academy in 1981, she flew helicopters off ships and was tasked with helicopter combat support and anti-submarine squadrons. Later, Lawrence became the first graduate of the US Naval Academy to fly into space and has flown four space missions including a visit to MIR, the Russian Space Station. Airlines enjoyed strong passenger demand in 2017 The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced global passenger traffic results for 2017, which shows demand (revenue passenger kilometers or RPKs) for the year, rose 7.6 per cent compared to 2016. This was well above the 10-year average annual growth rate of 5.5 per cent. While the rate of demand growth slowed to 6.2 per cent in December 2017, compared to December 2016, this largely was owing to less favourable comparisons to the even stronger growth trend seen in the same period last year. Full year 2017 capacity rose 6.3 per cent, and load factor climbed 0.9 percentage point to a record calendar-year high of 81.4

per cent. “[The year] 2017 got off to a very strong start and largely stayed that way throughout the year, sustained by a broad-based pick-up in economic conditions,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s director general and CEO. “While the underlying economic outlook remains supportive in 2018, rising cost inputs, most notably fuel, suggest we are unlikely to see the same degree of demand stimulation from lower fares that occurred in the first part of 2017.” North American airlines had their fastest demand growth since 2011, with full year traffic rising 4.8 per cent compared to 2016. Capacity climbed 4.5 per cent, and load factor edged up 0.3 percentage point to 81.7 per cent.

Employees at Alaska Airlines begin 60-day uniform test Alaska Airlines and fashion designer Luly Yang have debuted a modern, West Coast-inspired, custom-designed uniform collection. At a fashion show last month, held inside Alaska’s Sea-Tac hangar, employee models walked the runway, showcasing more than 90 garments and accessories to thousands of employees. The design, which has been more than two years in the making, will clad 19,000 Alaska, Virgin America and Horizon Air uniformed employees starting in late 2019. “Luly’s designs perfectly capture our fresh, West Coast vibe and we’re absolutely thrilled with the collection,” said Sangita Woerner, Alaska Airlines’ vice president of marketing. “Like our refreshed brand, launched in

early 2016, our new uniform collection includes bright pops of colour, clean lines and stunning finishes, creating a stylish yet approachable look.” The uniforms will be put to the test with 130 employee testers—flight attendants, pilots, customer service agents and lounge employees—wearing the uniforms for the next 60 days. Yang is an internationally known designer headquartered in Seattle, whose portfolio has expanded to include red carpet couture gowns, bridal collections, cocktail attire, bespoke menswear and hotel uniforms. Alaska began the project by surveying thousands of uniformed employees, following up with focus groups and work site visits to understand the features different workgroups wanted to

see in their new uniforms. Overwhelmingly, the top requests from employees were more pockets and designs that look great on all body shapes. The collection is also designed to be layered so that employees can self-regulate comfort while working in the freezing temperatures of Barrow, Alaska, to the balmier weather of Mexico. Seeking high quality and transparency in the manufacturing of their uniforms, Alaska selected Canadian uniform supplier Unisync Group of Toronto. An industry leader, Unisync is one of the largest uniform suppliers in North America. Working in close partnership with Yang, Unisync produced custom fabrics, buttons and signature accessories to ensure the garments provide optimal on-the-job performance, while also reflecting Alaska’s refreshed brand.

The City of Richmond has unveiled its new street banner collection. This year, almost 200 entries were received to the annual contest and the community had its say in choosing the 10 winning banners to beautify the city’s streetscapes. All entries represented one of the contest’s six themes: Parks and Nature; Transportation; Active Living; Community Pride; City Centre; and Arts, Culture and Heritage. “With such a wide array of visual art categories accepted, the annual Street Banner Contest provides residents an opportunity to become more involved with the beautification of their city,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “New to this year’s contest, residents were also given the opportunity to vote for the 10 winning designs from a narrowed down selection provided by a community judging panel.” One of the winning designs celebrates the spirit of a fast-paced city through an array of light captured at an intersection.

Winner Crystal Chan said that to her, “the design highlights how far we’ve come as a community and that the streaks remind her of the people who work to keep it running, no matter what.” More than 1,200 street banners are produced for the city. A complete set of the new street banners are currently on display at Richmond City Hall. The winning banners will beautify the City Centre area and gateways throughout the city starting later this month and will remain on display until early 2019. For more information on the street banner program and to view the winning designs, visit www.richmond.ca/banners. Beginning Monday, April 2, last year’s banners will be available in their original banner form and as recycled banner bags. These items can be purchased from 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday, from the Community Services Division reception located at the City of Richmond’s Operations Yard, 5599 Lynas Lane.

Automotive cabin air filters are usually found in one of three places: Under the hood, right by the windshield; Underneath the dashboard; Behind the glove compartment.

A vehicle’s interior air quality is something that is taken for granted—until it smells badly. Although dogs and smoke can add an offensive odor to a vehicle’s cabin, the worst offenders can be molds and mildews. Not only do they create an uncomfortable smell, these nasty particles can create serious health problems. How do these particles get into our vehicles? Molds and mildews grow in the presence of

excessive moisture in the vehicle and that usually happens in one of two ways. The first is through improper long-term storage of a vehicle, especially one that has a water leak. Once this type of mold gets into the vehicle it is almost impossible to remove—short of replacing the complete interior. Fortunately, this circumstance is quite rare. The second and more common way in which mold and

|

FEBRUARY

Maintaining good cabin air quality mildew particles are formed in a vehicle is through the air conditioning system. Under the dash sits the evaporator core, which is located inside a box. The evaporator core creates chilly air in the car and in so doing, attracts moisture from the air. A great deal of water forms inside the box, which drains out onto the ground (if you look under your car on a sweltering day with the air conditioning running you’ll see this happening). Under certain conditions, this moisture can create a breeding ground for mold and mildew. Relief from this problem is available in two ways. One way is to remove the evaporator box and manually clean it—a very labour-intensive and expensive job. The more cost-effective way involves a procedure that uses a special spray designed to kill the nasty particles and freshen up the interior. If the interior of your vehicle emits an unpleasant smell when the heat or air conditioning system is on, these sprays are usually the best cure. Lastly, another routine ser-

vice (on vehicles so equipped) is to replace the cabin air filter at regular intervals. The cabin air filter, a feature found on most late-model vehicles, cleans the air that comes into the interior through the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system. It catches dust, pollen and other airborne particles that cause unpleasant odors. If your car has a cabin air filter it usually requires replacement at intervals between 25,000 and 50,000 kilometres.

Report says competition would bring significant savings to BC’s auto insurance market A report entitled The Benefits of Competition in the Provision of Automobile Insurance in BC, commissioned by the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC), the national industry association representing Canada’s private home, auto and business insurers, concludes that competition would bring significant savings to British Columbia’s auto insurance market. Currently, all drivers in B.C. are covered by auto insurance company ICBC (Insurance Corporation of BC). By law, any vehicle registered and driven or parked on public streets in British Columbia must be covered by ICBC’s basic insurance package, which can be purchased from independent brokers across the province. This basic coverage, called “Autoplan,” includes protection from third party legal liability, under-insured motorist protection, accident benefits, hit-and-run protection, and inverse liability. Solution for February 2018 Crossword.

The report found that Canada’s private insurers have developed product innovations and new ways to reduce claims costs that could lower premiums for drivers, if they could operate in BC. Safe drivers could see their premiums reduced up to 18 per cent from an improved pricing structure that based premiums on factors highly correlated with risk, such as claims history and kilometers driven ICBC posted a loss of

$935-million for the first nine months of its 2017/18 fiscal year ending March 31 and is forecasting a total loss of $1.3-billion for the full year. By comparison, in the first nine months of its last fiscal year, the net loss was $232-million, and the loss for the entire year was $533-million. ICBC blames the increasing loss on the number of crashes occurring across the province.

Answer:

The winner’s name will be published in the March, 2018 edition of SkyTalk and at skytalkonline.com.

Seeing a gap in the market for a regional aircraft with mainline capabilities, Embraer launched the E190 in 2004. A single-aisle aircraft, it can carry up to 100 passengers in a two-class configuration or up to 124 in single-class high density configuration.
