Stars shine brightly at YVR Stars Awards Vancouver Airport Authority is proud that YVR has been voted Best Airport in North America for eight straight years. But more importantly, the Airport Authority is proud of the people that helped make that happen. It is the dedication of the workers and volunteers at YVR, who go above and beyond for visitors and passengers at the airport, which makes the difference, and that is why the YVR Stars program was started. The YVR Stars program recognizes great customer care in action. Anyone can nominate a YVR Star—visitors, passengers, as well as people who work and volunteer on Sea Island and notice a coworker, volunteer, or business partner performing exceptional customer service. Nominees are recognized annually at the YVR Stars Award ceremony. In 2017, 568 YVR Stars’ nominations were submitted. Submissions represented a range of roles and organizations, ranging from Green Coat volunteers to airline staff, retail partners and much more. On February 1, at the third annual YVR Stars Awards, the people who go above and beyond were celebrated and overall award recipients named in the categories of Safety, Teamwork, Individual and Peer to Peer. Here are some of the stories of the overall 2017 YVR Stars Award recipients. Safety Upon overhearing a conversation about an incident in the parking lot, Randy quickly attended the scene and determined that an individual was exhibiting signs of a stroke. He immediately called BC Ambulance Service and remained with the individual and kept him calm until help arrived. His quick thinking saved a life. Teamwork Two people, one an airline employee and one a volunteer, worked together to reunite a passenger in transit with her passport. The passport had been turned in to Terry, a Green Coat volunteer. Airline employee Kuniko, provided the critical information that helped locate the passenger just in the nick of time as the flight was boarding. Individual Ann assisted a newly arriving family that had immigrated to Canada with all their possessions and limited funds. When she finished her shift, she organized a hotel for the family and then went home to get her personal vehicle, so she could drive them to their hotel in Tsawwassen. Ann clearly went above and beyond for this family. Peer to Peer On a cold winter’s day, an airline employee was having trouble getting his car started and was unable to find someone to help with a jumpstart. Airport employee Hershcel stopped to ask, “Is there anything I can do to help?” Working together, Hershcel and her fellow airport employee got the car started. If you know somebody at the airport who has gone above and beyond, the Vancouver Airport Authority wants to hear about it. Please nominate your YVR Star at yvr.ca/yvrstars.

Airlines is based in Kelowna, B.C. In addition to its domestic scheduled service, the airline also supplies ad hoc charter and large aircraft contract services.
Since last year, Flair has flown more than 376,600 passengers on more than 3,090 flights, with plans to operate 12 aircraft by spring of 2019 as its network expands. “Flair Airlines is excited to begin operating from Vancouver International Airport,” said Chris Lapointe, vice president commercial operations, Flair Airlines. “We believe strongly that in this market there are thousands of people who are looking for low airfare travel options and we are thrilled to be the airline to provide that for them. By operating direct flights from Vancouver to Edmonton and Kelowna, plus one-stop service to Toronto, we believe this is a great start to our routes operating from Vancouver.” New flight services such as these are made possible because of YVR’s ConnectYVR rates and charges program, which provides a highly competitive rate structure and includes rates lower than any other major airport in Canada and competing US airports.

National Aviation Day celebrates Canada’s air safety, strength and successes By total area, Canada is the second-largest country in the world and, as a result, aviation plays a large part in the Canadian lifestyle. Although Canada was not the first country to take to the skies, its contribution to aviation has been significant. Last month, Canadians celebrated the aviation industry on National Aviation Day— February 23—honouring the Canadian pioneers who opened the skies to connect people and move goods safely and quickly within the country and around the world.
In addition to connecting Canadians in large and small communities with one another, Canadian aviation contributes to the health of the economy and creates jobs. For example, annual sales of Canadian aerospace products and services total more than $20-billion, with exports of aerospace goods and services approaching $17-billion. Canada also has one of the safest air transportation systems in the world. During the last decade, the accident rate has continually declined. In 2000, this rate was nearly eight accidents
per 100,000 hours flown; today, this rate is fewer than six accidents a year per 100,000 hours flown—a 25 per cent drop. In fact, Canada recently saw the total number of accidents decline to the lowest recorded figure in modern aviation history. Following are some of the country’s other aviation achievements: 1909 – On February 23, the Silver Dart flies nearly 800 metres in Baddeck, NS, marking Canada’s first powered, heavierthan-air flight. 1915 – The first series pro-

duction of aircraft in Canada began when the Curtiss JN-3 was put into production in Toronto. 1919 – Bush pilots were vital to the discovery and early development of Canada’s natural resources. In June, La Vigilance, a Curtiss HS-2Ls, performed the world’s first commercial bush flight in the St. Maurice Valley north of Trois-Rivières, Québec. 1919 – The first direct transAtlantic flight was made from St. John’s Newfoundland to Clifden, Ireland, by John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown in a twinengine Vickers Vimy bomber. 1920 – Formation of the Royal Canadian Air Force. 1930s – Canada moves more freight by air than the rest of the world combined. Air traffic control, flight plans, fixed routes, designated levels and radio contact, soundproof cabins and flight attendants are introduced. 1934 – Jessica Jarvis be- comes the first woman in Canada to earn her commercial pilot’s licence. 1937 – The government creates Trans-Canada Airlines (which became Air Canada in 1964) to meet Canada’s need for a transcontinental service.

1938 – The first coast-tocoast passenger service begins on March 6. 1944 – The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) was founded with the signing of the Convention on International Civil Aviation. Canada was one of the original 52-member states, and since 1945 the organization has been headquartered in Montreal. 1958 – On March 18, the Avro CF-105 Arrow makes its first high-speed flight. 1999 – Canada leads the world by being the first country to implement safety management systems (SMS) as a new way to eliminate safety risks in civil aviation. 2008 – Canada’s Bombardier, the world’s third-largest civil aircraft maker, unveils its ‘green’ CSeries family of fuel-efficient jets.
2015 – The Bombardier C Series CS100 aircraft is certified. 2016 – Transport Canada approves the establishment of test ranges of unmanned aircraft systems (or drones) to facilitate research and development. This will provide the aviation industry with dedicated, restricted airspace where they can test drones beyond visual line-of-sight. 2017 – Drone Delivery Canada, in partnership with Moose Cree First Nation, conducts real-world testing of technology that could allow for improved community re-supply in remote locations. Feathered friends, therapy dogs and aquatic life; YVR teems with animals
Three distinguishing traits that make raptors different from other birds are hooked beaks with sharp edges, feet with sharp curved claws or talons and keen eyesight.
Vancouver International Airport is a place filled with people, aircraft and luggage, but did you know about all the animals located here? There are service dogs and working raptors and because YVR is located on Sea Island it is also home to lots of wildlife. Following are some of the animals to be found at YVR. Remarkable Raptors At YVR, a wildlife team works with raptors to help keep other feathered birds away from its metal ‘birds’. While YVR also employs other techniques, such as pyrotechnics and lights, to move flocks of birds from the airport’s runways, the sight of a predator keeps birds away for much longer. This ensures the safety of passengers, as well as other bird friends. Presenting Horatio While dogs have become a familiar site at YVR because of the Less Airport Stress Initiative (LASI) and the airport’s therapy dogs, there is another dog that just loves to find food, sprint around the YVR offices and lay on his back in the middle of the office cubicle walkways. Meet Horatio, the guide dog of one of YVR’s employees. If you ever see him with his owner in the terminal, remember, you can only say hello if he isn’t working. When his
Six YVR Ambassor Dogs from St. John Ambulance take turns touring the halls at YVR between 11am and 1pm from Monday to Friday as part of the airport’s Less Airport Stress Initiative.
harness is on that means he is working to keep his owner safe—and that goes for all working dogs. If in doubt, always ask first.
2007 as part of the International Terminal’s expansion to showcase the beauty of B.C.’s underwater ecosystems.
LASI airport therapy dogs Since last summer, the airport’s LASI therapy dogs have really stolen the show at YVR. In partnership with St. John Ambulance, airport therapy dogs can be found in the terminal Monday to Friday from 11am to 1pm. Molly, Bailey, Mira, Norman, Grover and Soda are on-site to help passengers manage anxiety associated with travelling, work and general stress. These YVR Ambassador Dogs are specifically trained for interaction. The next time you are travelling through YVR, say hello to them.
Jellyfish YVR is also home to an 1,800-litre jellyfish aquarium. The exhibit features Pacific sea nettle jellies that are reared at the Vancouver Aquarium by its resident jellyfish expert. Next time you arrive at YVR, look and see how many jellyfish you can count—hint, there are 12.
Puppy Patrol Puppy cuddles are just the best, but unlike the LASI therapy dogs, the border collies at YVR have the same job as the airport’s raptor friends, they patrol the airfield to keep birds away from aircraft.
Jellyfish are found in every ocean and have roamed the seas for at least 500-million years or more, making them the oldest multiorgan animal.
Savannah Sparrow These small birds can sometimes find their way into the terminal. They can be spotted in the Graham Clarke Atrium, where they can enjoy the sunshine without having to brave the elements. Salmon-Safe Certification Sea Island, located in the Fraser River Estuary, is not only home to YVR but salmon, too. Just last year, YVR became the first airport in North America to achieve Salmon-Safe certification. This recognition acknowledges YVR’s ongoing efforts and commitment to transform its land and water management practices to protect Fraser River water quality and enhance the habitat so that Pacific salmon continue to thrive.
The Savannah Sparrow breeds in southern British Columbia to northern California. Its song is a mixture of chirps and trills.
YVR became the first airport in North America to achieve SalmonSafe certification, an accreditation program linking management practices with the protection of agricultural and urban watersheds.
Located in the International Terminal, Level 3, the Vancouver Aquarium exhibit at YVR houses a rich collection of marine life native to British Columbia.
Aquarium Located in the International Terminal is a 114,000-litre aquarium that is home to more than 5,000 creatures including wolf eels, anemones, sea stars, kelp greenlings and sea urchins. The aquarium was added to YVR in
Animals at YVR include Horatio, a guide dog for one of the airport’s employees.
The Border Collie is a working and herding dog, specifically bred for intelligence and obedience. At YVR, they are used to keep birds away from the aircraft.

Icelandair adds Boeing 737 MAX to its fleet Icelandair has received its first Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, which will join the airline’s fleet of Boeing 757 and 767 jets serving destinations throughout North America and Europe. In 2013, Icelandair placed an order for 16 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, including the MAX 8 and larger MAX 9 models. Both airplanes provide airlines with lower seat-mile costs and more range (up to 6,510 kilometers) to open new routes profitably. “The arrival of the new aircraft represents a milestone, the start of the renewal of our fleet, which is an exciting undertaking for Icelandair,” said Björgólfur Jóhannsson, president and CEO Icelandair. “The MAX will be an excellent addition to our fleet of Boeing 757s and 767s and increase both flexibility and capacity for the growth of our
network, through added frequencies and new destinations.” The 737 MAX family is powered by CFM International LEAP-1B engines and includes design updates such as Boeing’s Advanced Technology winglet that result in less drag and further optimize the 737 MAX performance, especially on longer-range missions. Together, these improvements reduce fuel use and CO2 emissions by at least 14 per cent compared to today’s NextGeneration 737s—and by 20 per cent more than the singleaisle airplanes they replace. Icelandair offers three flights per week from Vancouver to Reykjavik, Iceland. The airline connects 26 gateways in Europe from its Reykjavik-Keflavik hub. For more information, visit Icelandair.com.

Cathay Pacific brings yoga to the skies
Cathay Pacific has partnered with Pure Yoga to offer an inflight well-being programme, Travel Well with Yoga. In harmony with the airline’s Life Well Travelled campaign, the series of videos have been developed by Pure Yoga instructors to help passengers ease into their journeys with yoga and meditation exercises and tips. Passengers can access the Travel Well with Yoga videos in
English, Cantonese, Mandarin and Japanese across all Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon routes by accessing the Lifestyle section on their inflight entertainment screens. Split into six easy-to-follow videos, the series demonstrates yoga and meditation routines that can be done before, during or after a flight. Exercises are designed to improve circulation, enhance joint mobility and relax
the mind for a comfortable and restful journey. “We all know that sitting still for a long period of time can be uncomfortable,” said Simon Cuthbert, Cathay Pacific entertainment, platforms and connectivity manager. “The need to get up, move and get your blood pumping is important during a flight. Yoga is an innovative way to do this. There are a series of exercises that can easily be done
from an Economy class seat, whilst other moves are suitable for after the flight in your hotel.” Pure Yoga is also offering all Cathay Pacific Marco Polo Club members a complimentary 10-day trial, 50 per cent discount on studio joining fees and a complimentary upgrade for access to all Pure Yoga studios across Asia. For information on Cathay’s flights from Vancouver, visit cathaypacific.com.

The first Ultra Long Range version of the A350 XWB has rolled out of the Airbus final assembly line in Toulouse. Air New Zealand’s Skycouch seats are in the forward Economy cabin of all its Boeing 777 and 787-9 aircraft.
The Air New Zealanddesigned Skycouch, a row of three Economy seats that convert into a flat, flexible surface for rest, relaxation or for kids to use as a play area, was first introduced in 2011. The airline has now further developed the product, introducing a dedicated Skycouch Infant Harness, Belt and Pod, allowing infants to remain lying down throughout the cruise phase of flight. Previously, they were required to be seated on a guardian’s lap when the seatbelt sign was on. A new infant pod also pro-
vides additional protection for the airline’s youngest Skycouch customers. The Skycouch Cuddle Belt, which was previously only certified to allow two adults or an adult and child travelling together to lie down side by side on the Skycouch, has also been updated to allow two children to use it, providing greater flexibility to families. Pending certification and regulatory approvals, the airline plans to make the modified Skycouch product available progressively onboard its Boeing 777 and 787-9 Dreamliner fleets in the coming months.

Air Transat adds domestic flights to offer more accessibility to Europe
This summer, Canadian holiday travel airline Air Transat will be adding new domestic flights from Vancouver, Calgary and Quebec City to allow their passengers to have more access to the airline’s European destinations departing from Toronto and Montreal. Air Transat will offer three flights a week between Vancouver and Toronto and inaugurating a new route between Calgary and Montreal. Travellers from Vancouver will have access to 25 European destination with Air Transat, including three new destinations via Montreal added to the airline’s summer 2018 program: Nantes and Toulouse (France);
and Malaga (Spain). Travellers from the greater Calgary area will have access to 23 European destinations, including eight new ones via Montreal. Passengers will also be able to benefit from multi-destination flight options, which allow travellers to land in one European city and return from another at no extra cost—an affordable way for Canadians to get the most of out of their European vacation. “For more than 30 years, Air Transat has been the preferred holiday travel airline for Canadians flying to Europe,” said Annick Guérard, chief operating officer at Transat.
“Our domestic flights are very popular with travellers, as they offer more choices and the flexibility to easily plan their dream vacations to Europe. This allows us to reinforce our position as leader in the transatlantic market, because a greater number of travellers are choosing the unique experience of flying with Air Transat to Europe.” Starting this month, Air Transat begins leased Airbus A320 operation, followed by A321 aircraft in the second quarter of 2018. These aircraft will gradually replace the airline’s current fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft. For more information on Air Transat flights, visit airtransat. com.
Following completion of the airframe assembly, the first aircraft has now moved to an outdoor station where it will undergo extensive ground tests, prior to installation of its Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines. The aircraft will then embark on a short flight test programme to certify the changes over the standard A350-900 that will bring the additional range capability. These changes include a modified fuel system that increases fuel carrying capacity by 24,000 litres, without the need for additional fuel tanks. The test phase will also measure enhanced performance derived from aerodynamic improvements, including extended winglets. The A350 XWB features the latest aerodynamic design, carbon fibre fuselage and wings, plus new fuel-efficient RollsRoyce engines. Together, these latest technologies translate into operational efficiency, with a 25 per cent reduction in fuel burn and emissions and significantly lower maintenance costs. To date, Airbus has recorded 854 firm orders for the A350 XWB from 45 customers worldwide. Singapore Airlines is one of the largest customers for the A350 XWB Family, having ordered a total of 67 A350-900s, including seven Ultra LongRange models.

Air cargo demand off to a robust start in 2018 The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released data for global air freight markets showing that demand, measured in freight tonne kilometers (FTKs), rose eight per cent in January 2018 compared to the year-earlier period. This was up from the 5.8 per cent annual growth recorded in December 2017. Freight capacity, measured in available freight tonne kilometres (AFTKs), rose by 4.2 per cent year-on-year in January 2018. “With eight per cent growth
in January, it’s been a solid start to 2018 for air cargo,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s director general and CEO. “That follows an exceptional year in which demand grew by nine per cent. We expect demand for air cargo to taper to a more normal 4.5 per cent growth rate for 2018. But there are potential headwinds. If President Trump follows through on his promise to impose sanctions on aluminum and steel imports, there is a very real risk of a trade war. Nobody wins when protectionist
Air Cargo
measures escalate.” All regions reported an increase in demand in January 2018. North American airlines’ freight volumes expanded 7.5 per cent in January 2018 yearon-year, as capacity increased 4.2 per cent. IATA is the trade association for the world’s airlines, representing some 280 airlines or 83 per cent of total air traffic. The association helps formulate industry policy on critical aviation issues.

Seoul’s Incheon Airport’s new Terminal 2 (T2) has increased the airport’s capacity by 18-million passengers per year. The new terminal, which is initially being used by Korean Air and fellow SkyTeam Alliance carriers Delta Air Lines, Air France and KLM, makes extensive use of self-service processing. Passengers flying from the new facility can use self-service check-in kiosks, self bag drop and automated immigration processing. Passengers may also find a robot guide roaming the terminal to provide information about the services in T2. Since mid-2017, Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC) has been working with LG to trial customer-facing robots. A great deal of effort has also been made to create a unique passenger experience. For example, there are cultural performances to complement the airport’s Korean Cultural Experience Centres, an

observation deck, which offers views over the airfield, artwork displays and exhibition. The terminal building is also flooded with natural light and includes areas of greenery to help create a calming atmosphere for passengers. To help avoid disruption, passengers who arrive at the wrong terminal for their flights are being issued with an “I’m late” card. This card can be used to access priority check-in counters and security lanes to fasttrack the passenger through the
check-in and security processes once they arrive at the correct terminal. Airlines in T2 offer passengers the opportunity to use dozens of self-check-in machines. Korean Air, which offers flights from Vancouver to Incheon Airport, encourages passengers to make use of its large bank of smart bag-drop machines. Korean Air also offers its first and business class passengers separate check-in lounges.

Air Canada launching new service to Kauai; doubling frequency to Hawaii Jazz operates more than 700 flights a day, flying to more Canadian destinations than any other carrier. It is also the Air Canada Express service operator to 72 destinations in Canada and the U.S.
Air Canada’s largest regional partner, Jazz airline, has been named one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers for the seventh consecutive year, in an annual national employer survey by Mediacorp Canada Inc. Canada’s Best Diversity Employers recognizes employers across the country that have exceptional workplace diversity and inclusiveness programs. These include successful diversity initiatives in a variety of areas, including programs for employees from five groups: women; members of visible minorities; persons with disabilities; Aboriginal peoples; and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered/transsexual (LGBT) people. “We are very proud to be ranked as one of the Best Diversity Employers in Canada for the sev-
enth year in a row,” said Colin Copp, president, Jazz. “For Jazz, diversity is not a program. It is core to the makeup of our people and business. Facilitating inclusion by acknowledging the unique and diverse perspectives of all individuals creates one incredible team of employees—something we celebrate.” In recognizing Jazz with the award, the editors of Mediacorp praised the airline for the following initiatives: • The development of a corporate strategy to support mental health in the workplace, including participation in the Not Myself Today program to build greater awareness and understanding of mental health. • The creation of a dedicated Aboriginal recruitment web
page and working with several community partners to reach out to Aboriginal candidates. Additionally, members of the company’s Aboriginal employee resource group offer mentoring to students from First Nations Technical Institute and Confederation College. • The Jazz Aviation Pathway Award for Professionalism and Diversity, a $3,000 scholarship awarded to a full-time student in their final year who self identifies as Aboriginal, a person with a disability, a visible minority or female for outstanding contributions to safety, leadership and professionalism. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is aiming for one-billion passengers to fly on flights powered by a mix of jet fuel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2025. The organization set this aspiration last month on the 10th anniversary of the first flight to blend sustainable aviation fuel and ordinary jet fuel. On February 24, 2008, a Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747 flew from London to Amsterdam with sustainable aviation fuel in one of its engines. The flight demonstrated the viability of drop-in biofuels, which can be blended with traditional
jet fuel, using existing airport infrastructure. The push to increase uptake of SAF is being driven by the airline industry’s commitment to achieve carbon-neutral growth from 2020 and to cut net carbon emissions by 50 per cent compared to 2005. A flight completely powered by sustainable fuel has the potential to reduce the carbon emissions of that flight by up to 80 per cent. Several airlines, including Cathay Pacific, FedEx Express, JetBlue, Lufthansa, Qantas and United have made significant investments by forward-purchasing more than five-billion
litres of SAF. Airports in Oslo, Stockholm, Brisbane and Los Angeles are already mixing SAF with the general fuel supply. If this usage continues and expands, it is anticipated that half-a-billion passengers will have flown on a SAF-blendpowered flight by 2025. Acknowledging that some sources of biofuels for land transport have been criticized for their environmental credentials, Alexandre de Juniac, president of IATA, has emphasized strongly the determination of the airline industry to only use truly sustainable sources for its alternative fuels.

Bank of Canada unveils new $10 bank note featuring Viola Desmond on International Women’s Day A new Canadian $10 bill will be in circulation later this year. Once issued, it will mark the first time that an iconic Canadian woman is portrayed on a regularly circulating Bank of Canada note. Viola Desmond was selected for the new $10 bank note by Finance Minister Bill Morneau following an open call to Canadians to nominate an iconic Canadian woman for i design. A successful black Nova Scotian businesswoman, Viola Desmond defiantly refused to leave a whites-only area of a movie theatre in 1946 and was subsequently jailed, convicted and fined. Her court case is one of the first known legal challenges against racial segregation brought forth by a black woman in Canada. It would take 63 years for Nova Scotia to issue Desmond, who died in 1965, a posthumous apology and pardon. Her name now graces a Halifax Transit harbour ferry, a Canada Post stamp and there are plans for streets named in her honour in Montreal and Halifax ,and a park in Toronto. The new $10 note is the first vertically oriented bank note issued in Canada. This allows for a more prominent image of Viola Desmond and differentiates this
The back of the $10 bank note features images and symbols that represent Canada’s ongoing pursuit of rights and freedoms. It features the Canadian Museum for Human Rights—the first museum in the world solely dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights. Also depicted on the note is an eagle feather—representing the ongoing journey toward recognizing rights and freedoms for Indigenous Peoples in Canada—and an excerpt from the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Richmond Council approves community grants Richmond City Council has approved 64 grants with a value of more than $857,200 as part of its annual community grants program. Funds go toward supporting local and regional organizations which provide a wide variety of important community services. “As Richmond’s population continues to thrive, so does the demand for valuable programs that make positive impacts on our community,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “Our grants program supports and provides additional funding to organizations that offer many important services in Richmond.” To address specific community needs, the City has established four different grant categories: • health, social, and safety services • arts and culture • child care • parks, recreation and community events The grants program is essential for many local organizations that are faced with challenges in securing funding from senior governments, and others, at the levels necessary to meet the demand. While not intended to be a primary funding source for the organization it supports, grants help ensure that community needs are being addressed. Child care grants are funded from developer contributions while health,

Annually, in the fall, the City calls for grant applications from community groups and some can qualify for multi-year funding. Since 2003, The City of Richmond Lulu Series: Art in the City program, which explores the relationship between art and the urban environment, has presented international, national and regional speakers. The objectives of The Lulu Series are: • to educate participants on the importance of art as a means for citizens to establish connections with their communities • establish evidence that as people connect with their communities and the spaces and businesses in them, there will be an enhancement in commerce • create benefits for business leaders and design professionals to proactively incorporate artistic expressions into their places of business and building designs and for politicians to promote and support this; and • lay challenges and establish goals for the growth of art in Richmond and other Lower Mainland communities Members of the public, artists, planning experts and design enthusiasts from across Metro Vancouver are invited to attend the following lineup of speakers in this year’s series: Thursday, March 15: Social Impact Through Design: How Curiosity Transformed our Practice Michael Henderson of HCMA Architecture + Design will describe how using outside the box approaches to collaboration and engagement allow his firm to achieve social impact through design. Auto Talk Auto journalists name 2018 Canadian Car; Utility Vehicle of the Year The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC), an association of professional journalists, writers, photographers and corporate members whose focus is the automobile and the Canadian automotive industry, has chosen the 2018 Honda Accord as Canadian Car of the Year and the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica as Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year. The choices followed a year of testing and two rounds of voting by nearly 100 voting members of AJAC, who assessed the vehicles throughout the year by driving them and testing them in a variety of conditions. The vehicles were scored anonymously on numerous factors, including performance, features, technology, design, fuel consumption and value for money. The highest scorers in each category were declared the category winners. Those 14 winners were voted on again by AJAC’s journalist members to determine the very best car and utility vehicle. In the second round of voting, they were asked to consider more subjective qualities, such as the levels of comfort, convenience and practical performance. “We’re thrilled to declare the Honda Accord to be the Canadian Car of the Year for 2018, and the Chrysler Pacifica
