Vancouver International Airport (YVR) was recently voted Best Airport in North America for a record ninth consecutive year at the Skytrax World Airport Awards. To acknowledge this achievement and to recognize all those who contribute to the airport’s success, Craig Richmond, president & CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority, published an open letter to the community: “About 90 years ago world-famous aviator and explorer Charles Lindbergh snubbed an invitation to Vancouver, stating “There is no fit field to land on.” Well, we’ve been taking great pride in proving him wrong ever since. And, today we are humbled to once again be recognized for our efforts. But words like proud and honoured don’t quite cut it— only grateful comes close. We are so thankful to our community, our city and our province to have won Best Airport in North America for a ninth straight year. YVR is all about you. You

the passenger, the bag handler, the volunteer, the first responder, the cherry exporter and the countless others who touch the airport—it’s because of you YVR is number one. And, it’s with your support we’re able to continue running our airport in a way that reflects our unique

region, always with the best interests of our local community in mind. We take our role in representing British Columbia on the world stage very seriously and we need your help to stay on top. YVR is experiencing record growth and, to

be frank, there will be some turbulence as we expand. However, I promise that it’ll be worth it. We’re investing in a better airport—a thriving community asset that creates jobs, gives back and makes us all proud. So, thank you for your

patience. And thank you so much for the continued support. I’m honoured to lead the YVR team and connect B.C. to the world. And we couldn’t do this without you—because of you, we will continue to thrive. A thousand thanks.” See BEST AIRPORT page 3

Current projects underway at YVR

There are several key projects currently in progress at YVR. Designed to enhance the airport experience, they include YVR’s biggest sustainability projects to date, new parking options, terminal expansions and much more. Some projects you may see on Sea Island this month include: Curbside enhancement The curbside enhancement project continues, which includes work to glass windows and the sidewalk along the Departures level. There are several construction zones set up along the Departures level that may impact sidewalk and curb access. This work is expected to be complete

by late spring. CATSA Plus screening system Work is taking place in the Domestic Transfer and In Transit Pre-Clearance Facilities, as well as the International Terminal security screening area, to introduce CATSA Plus, a high-performance security screening system. Passenger routing may be modified for short periods of time around work areas. Any noisy work will take place at night to limit disruptions. All new systems are expected to be operational by the end of June 2018. Pier D expansion As part of the Pier D expansion proj-

ect, a floor-to-ceiling hoarding wall near Gates 58 and 62 will be installed over the coming weeks. No airport operations will be impacted during this installation. Parking upgrades Various early works will be taking place in the old Value Lot (adjacent to the Parkade) to prepare for the construction of a new six-storey parking lot and Central Utilities Building. This work includes fence and hoarding installation, grubbing and some minor traffic control measures around the exit toll plaza. Work is starting this month to prepare for the upcoming reconfiguration of the

jetSet Parking lot. This work will impact some parking spots, but the lot remains open and continues to be a parking option for travellers. As part of the parking reconfiguration project, the cell phone lot will be temporarily relocated, starting on April 20. There will be clear directional signage to the interim lot. Once the cell phone lot re-opens, it will be paved and also have WiFi service, offering an improved customer experience. RESA Preparation work is underway as utilities are relocated as part of the North Runway End Safety Areas (RESA) project. YVR is proactively building RESAs,

Construction Update

which are specialized areas at the end of a runway designed to protect passengers and reduce the severity of aircraft damage, in the unlikely possibility that an overrun or undershoot occurs on a runway. Equipment and material for this project will be visible from Ferguson Road on Sea Island. Taxiway project Taxiway improvement work is currently underway, including pavement repair. This project will be complete by the end of this month. More information can be found on the airport’s construction projects at yvr. ca/construction.

Air Canada announces 2018/2019 winter schedule for sun destinations Air Canada’s additional service for its 2018/2019 winter schedule out of Vancouver International Airport (YVR) includes increased frequencies and new service to Lihue Airport (LIH) in Kauai, Hawaii. All flights from Vancouver to Kauai, Honolulu, Maui and Kona, along with other popular sun destinations in Mexico, will be flown via Air Canada’s new mainline Boeing 737 MAX fleet. The schedule will take effect starting from October 2018. “We’re pleased to see Air Canada add a new destination and increased frequencies to many sunny destinations, including the introduction of numerous double daily flights,” said Anne Murray, vice president of marketing and communications, Vancouver Airport Authority. “This provides our passengers with more

flexibility when looking to escape the winter weather. I would like to thank Air Canada, our long-term partner, for continuously providing more exciting connections and benefits to our passengers.” From December 2018 to April 2019, the YVR-LIH route will offer a threetime weekly service. Lihue is the second largest town on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, which is known as a cultural and

historical getaway. The route will use a Boeing 737 MAX, which uses 20 per cent less fuel per seat than the original Next-Generation 737. Air Canada has configured the cabin to include North American Business and Economy class seats. “The introduction of the fuel-efficient Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft to our fleet has given us tremendous flexibil-

ity to strategically enhance our already extensive North American network and offer more flights to popular destinations with more connection options from our YVR hub,” said Benjamin Smith, president, passenger airlines at Air Canada. “With 41 weekly flights next winter to Hawaii, we’re very pleased to launch new flights to Kauai, as well as double the number of flights from Western Canada and offer day-time return flight options from Honolulu and Maui to Vancouver. The new 737 MAX is the mainstay of our refreshed North American fleet and customers are already enjoying the next generation of our onboard entertainment system, ample storage space in its generous overhead bins and the ability to stay connected during flight with WiFi.” In addition to the new service to

Kauai, Air Canada’s increased frequencies from YVR include: • Vancouver-Honolulu: Twice daily (B737 MAX) • Vancouver-Maui: Twice daily (B737 MAX) • Vancouver-Kona: Four times weekly (B737 MAX) • Vancouver-Cancun: Four times weekly (B737 MAX) • Vancouver-Ixtapa: Three times weekly (B737 MAX) • Vancouver-Puerto Vallarta: Four times weekly (B737 MAX) • Vancouver-Los Cabos: Three times weekly (B737 MAX) • Vancouver-Phoenix: Daily (A320) • Vancouver-Palm Springs: Daily (A320) For more information and to book online, visit aircanada.com.

All-female crews operate two intercontinental Air Canada flights on International Women’s Day The European-styled luxury shopping destination McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport features luxury premium and lifestyle brands, with year-round savings of up to 70 per cent.

Since its opening in July 2015, McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport has welcomed nearly 10-million shoppers. The award-winning Designer Outlet will soon begin Phase II construction to deliver more than 7,800 square metres of additional retail space and up to 35 new luxury, premium and lifestyle brands, with a scheduled opening in Spring 2019. In addition, the expansion will result in the creation of 400 jobs for the construction and retail sectors. Phase II will adjoin east of the existing centre and will mirror the current European design, expanding on the centre’s notable open-air village style, with luxury piazzas, cobblestone walkways and a variety of facades. This Phase II project forms part of McArthurGlen Group’s plan to develop more than 148,000 square metres of retail space over the next three years across its 24-centre portfolio. The Sea Island expansion comes after 32 months of successful operation. A record-breaking opening weekend in 2015, when the centre welcomed more than 170,000 shoppers, has been followed by ongoing growth as well

as several accolades, including Best New Development at the ICSC Canadian Shopping Centre Awards, the NAIOP Commercial Real Estate Award of Excellence for Retail Development and the MAPIC Best Outlet Center. The current 22,000–squaremetre centre will remain fully open during Phase II construction and will continue to offer its shoppers year-round savings of up to 70 per cent at designer brands such as Polo Ralph Lauren, Coach, Tommy Hilfiger and Tumi, as well as the recently opened Kate Spade, Sandro and Maje. “In less than three years the centre has become a key retail destination in Metro Vancouver,” said Robert Thurlow, general manager of McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport. “We have seen tremendous support from local communities and tourists from all over the world and we’re proud of our growing list of awards and various in-centre events and activities. “As one of Canada’s best performing malls, we are excited to expand our existing offer, elevating the retail experience for our guests and brand partners.” Tourism has also been a major driver for the centre due

to its proximity to the Vancouver International Airport (YVR). More than 24-million passengers transit through the airport annually and the centre caters to these visitors in several ways. “The success we’ve seen so far at the centre has been incredible and we are excited to provide the community with more shopping options with Phase II kicking off this spring,” said Scott Norris, vice president, commercial development, Vancouver Airport Authority. “The Designer Outlet Centre not only creates jobs and encourages tourism for our local community—it is also one of the ways we look at generating revenue outside of airport operations with the goal of keeping costs for our passengers and airlines low. This innovative business model enables us to continue building YVR as a world-class connecting hub.” In addition to the free Canada Line connecting guests to the airport in just three minutes, the centre employs multilingual staff, real-time flight information on digital screens throughout the centre, free charging stations and a free luggage locker facility. McArthurGlen is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 9pm; Sundays 10am to 7pm.

All-female crews operated an Air Canada Dreamliner and a Boeing 777-200LR to London Heathrow and Hong Kong, respectively, on International Women’s Day.

Last month, Air Canada marked International Women’s Day, March 8, 2018, by operating two intercontinental flights with all female pilots and flight attendants from its Toronto hub across both the Atlantic and Pacific. The flights were additionally supported by female ground crews providing aircraft servicing, loading, dispatch, pushback functions, customer boarding and more. Flight AC868, the Daytripper from Toronto to London Heathrow onboard Air Canada’s flagship Boeing 787 Dreamliner, departed at 8:30am with an allfemale crew of two pilots and six flight attendants. Flight AC15 from Toronto to Hong Kong, Air Canada’s longest flight operating on March 8, departed with an all-female crew of four pilots and 11 flight attendants onboard a Boeing 777200LR, its longest-range aircraft. “We proudly salute and

Vancouver to Mexico City, YVR recognized for waste management program new service via WestJet

The Palacio de Bellas Artes, a prominent cultural center in Mexico City, features a dramatic marble performance hall and museum with murals by Diego Rivera and other notable artists. Photo by Jeses.

WestJet has begun three-time weekly flights from YVR to Mexico City International Airport (Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juárez, MEX), marking the airline’s newest flight to Mexico. This month, the service will be moved to daily operation on the route, starting April 29 as follows: • Departing Vancouver at 7:40am daily, arriving Mexico City at 3pm. • Departing Mexico City at 4pm daily, arriving in

Vancouver at 7:30pm WestJet first landed in Mexico in 2007 and now serves 11 cities in Mexico from 15 Canadian cities, offering more non-stop routes than any other Canadian airline. The airline’s growth in Mexico makes up nearly 10 per cent of its available seat miles and at peak winter schedule, the airline will operate up to 37 daily flights.

The waste management program at YVR was recently selected as the winner of the 2018 ACINA Environmental Achievement Awards in the Environmental Management Award category. The awards, organized annually by the Airports Council International – North America (ACI-NA), celebrate the achievements of ACI-NA members in promoting innovative environmental initiatives within an airport community. Environmental management is a core component of all activities at YVR, with the airport

achieving a waste diversion rate of 51 per cent, three years ahead of schedule and one per cent above its 2020 target. Diverted materials from landfill included bottles, paper, pallets, glass, metal, latex gloves and plastics. Some of the ways waste is being reduced at YVR: • YVR has a centralized food court sorting station in the International Terminal Building. Patrons leave their trays on the counter for trained airport staff to sort into different waste streams, ensuring that recyclable material is being sorted properly and improving customer service. • In late 2016, YVR partnered with ChopValue Manufacturing, a Vancouverbased engineering and design company that creates innovative material using recycled chopsticks. Since then, more than 228,000 chopsticks have

been diverted from going to a landfill. • All liquid soap in public washrooms was replaced with DEB Refresh Clear Foam Soap. Not only does this unscented foam soap use 20 per cent less water than regular liquid soap, but it also comes in recyclable plastic bottles and leaves no residue. • Canadian Border Security Agency (CBSA) employees use several pairs of latex gloves per day at security checkpoints. In 2017, YVR started working with TerraCycle to provide latex glove recycling boxes at all its security check points. To date, more than 42,500 gloves have been diverted from landfills. YVR is committed to reducing waste and strengthening its diversion culture with several new initiatives planned this year.

UPS plans $500-million investment in Canada American multinational package delivery company UPS plans to invest more than $500-million towards facility expansions and technological enhancements in Canada, adding more than 1,000 new jobs. The investment and expansion are fuelled by the rise of e-commerce and the resulting growth in volume of Canadian businesses. “UPS Canada is capitalizing on customer growth and solid operating leverage,” said UPS chairman and chief executive officer, David Abney. “Strong returns coupled with continued customer demand create an optimal time for this investment that we expect to even further contribute to Canada’s vibrant economy.” Construction of a $125-million, 16,000-square-metre expansion to the company’s Montreal hub, which will be UPS’s first

automated sorting facility in Canada, has already begun. Additional facility-based projects include expansions in the Greater Toronto Area and other parts of Ontario as well as Quebec, British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba. As the first market in the company’s international expansion in 1975, UPS’s Canadian operations have grown to include more than 12,000 employees, 1,100 UPS Access Point locations and 63 facilities. In addition to optimizing the UPS Canada network through facility expansions and improvements, UPS will maintain its focus on meeting environmental sustainability goals using alternative fuels and technology designed to reduce distance and fuel consumption. UPS Canada has set a goal to have 50 per cent of its fleet

running on alternative fuels by the end of 2018. The company has also launched a fleet of compressed natural gas vehicles in British Columbia, a first for UPS in Canada. UPS continues to support the Canadian communities it serves, contributing more than $2-million in grants and charitable donations in 2017. Employees across Canada donated 127,837 hours volunteering in their communities, helping local initiatives such as Youth Without Shelter, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and planting more than 4,000 trees to help offset emissions. Globally, UPS has committed to volunteer 20-million community service hours by the end of 2020 and has already reached more than 70 per cent of this goal.

Boeing receives services contract for RCAF’s fleet of Chinooks The Canadian government and aircraft manufacturer Boeing have agreed to an amendment of an existing performancebased logistics (PBL) contract for the Royal Canadian Air Forces (RCAF) fleet of Chinook helicopters. Operating under a 20-year performance-based sustainment and training contract since 2013, the RCAF reviews its Chinook fleet support requirements every five years. Under the $313-million fixed-price amendment, Boeing will continue to provide full system logistics, engineering support, supply chain, data analytics and training services to the RCAF’s 15 CH-147F Chinooks through to 2023. Unlike traditional contracts based on payment for specific parts and services, under a PBL agreement the customer pays for a support package with an agreed-

to level of readiness, which can lower costs while increasing mission-capability rates. Boeing supports PBL contracts with customers around the world and across multiple platforms.

Through this contract, Boeing will also continue to work with companies across Canada in support of the country’s Industrial and Regional Benefits Policy, which supports long-term opportunities for the Canadian aero-

space industry and workforce. Currently, Boeing works with nearly 560 Canadian suppliers and the company employs approximately 2,000 highly skilled workers throughout Canada.

Boeing recognized by Guinness World Records for 10,000th 737 Thousands of Boeing employees gathered at the company’s Renton, Wash., factory to celebrate the 10,000th 737 to come off the production line last month. This special 737 MAX 8 aircraft, designated for Southwest Airlines, broke the Guinness World Records title for the mostproduced commercial jet aircraft model. The 737 previously held this world record title in 2006 for the 5,000th airplane to come out of the Renton factory, an achievement that took almost four decades to reach. Due to growing market demand and higher production rates, the Boeing 737 program reached its 10,000th airplane milestone only 12 years later.

RCAF unveils CF-18 Hornet for 2018 demonstration season

Each year, the Royal Canadian Air Forces (RCAF) selects a theme for its CF-18 air Demonstration Team, which takes to the skies during the air show season to demonstrate the skill and teamwork of Canadian Forces personnel. This year marks the 60th Anniversary of NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command)—the combined, bi-national military command established by an agreement in 1958 between Canada and the U.S. to monitor and defend North America. In commemora-

tion, the RCAF will fly a CF-18 Hornet in special livery colours of both the Canadian and U.S. national flags. Coated in a bright blue, red and white paint scheme, chosen to be both eye-catching to airshow audiences on the tarmac and from a distance in the air, the commemorative CF-18 Hornet’s paint design captures elements of a radar sweep and the Northern Lights across its wings This CF-18 Hornet will be flown at 26 airshows throughout North America and the United Kingdom throughout 2018.

Boeing’s 10,000th 737 aircraft came off the production line and entered the Guinness Book of World Records.

“The speed at which Boeing achieved this new milestone is very impressive,” said Michael Empric, official adjudicator for Guinness World Records. “We are excited to once again rec-

ognize the 737 and the important role it plays in commercial aviation.” Later this year, Boeing will increase production of its 737 aircraft from the cur-

rent rate of 47 per month to 52. There are currently more than 4,600 aircraft still on order, fuelled by sales of the newest 737 variant, the 737 MAX.

Munich Airport chosen as Europe’s best

One of the world’s most modern airport buildings, Munich’s Terminal 2 includes a wide range of shopping and dining options amid surroundings flooded with natural light. Photo: courtesy Munich Airport.

The new long-haul airliner Airbus A350-900 takes one third less time to build than other Airbus models, since its fuselage, wings and tailplane can be assembled at the same time.

Lufthansa has begun flights on its new, flagship long-haul Airbus A350-900 aircraft to North American destinations. The first flights from Munich to U.S. destinations—Denver, Chicago, Newark—began last month. On May 1, 2018, the A350900 will be introduced on the Munich-Vancouver route. Flight LH476 will depart from Munich at 3:35pm, arriving in Vancouver at 4:45pm. The return flight, LH477, will depart from Vancouver at 6:25pm, arriving in Munich at 1:20pm on the following day. This flight between Vancouver and Munich will travel daily. “The strategic placement of Lufthansa’s cutting-edge A350 aircraft on an increased number of North American routes, beginning with our summer travel season, emphasizes the level of commitment that the Lufthansa Group has towards the United

States and Canada,” said Tamur Goudarzi Pour, Lufthansa Group vice president airline sales for The Americas. “The state-of-theart A350-900 is more efficient and eco-friendly compared to other long-haul aircraft. It offers our passengers a premium product with elevated levels of comfort, including a more generous amount of space. It is a new experience of flying.” A350-900 cabin classes The A350-900 uses 25 per cent less fuel, produces 25 per cent fewer emissions and is significantly quieter on take-off. The aircraft has space for 293 passengers with 48 seats in Business Class, 21 in Premium Economy and 224 in Economy Class. In Business Class, Lufthansa passengers enjoy a self-service area where they can help themselves to snacks and drinks throughout the flight. A new Premium Economy Class travel class allows passen-

gers to check in two pieces of luggage at no charge, each with an allowable weight of up to 23 kilograms. Travellers can select their favourite food from a menu card, and the food is served on porcelain dishes. The award-winning Economy Class, furnished in various shades of blue, features special ergonomically formed seat upholstery and provides more personal and storage space. The A350 Economy Class was awarded the 2018 German Design Award \by the German Design Council.

Throughout the cabin, passengers can use their own mobile device as a second screen, as well as pre-select programs from the on-board entertainment system up to six weeks prior to flight time. Improved cabin pressure during the flight and a novel LED lighting system, which adjusts with the day and nighttime rhythm of passengers, provide a more well-rested in-flight experience. Munich International Airport (MCU) has once again gained the title of Europe’s Best Airport for 2018. The award marks Munich Airport’s 11th first-place finish in this category. The Bavarian hub was selected for the honour in the annual World Airport Awards, announced last month by London-based aviation research institute Skytrax. The World Airport Awards are based on a global survey of passengers. This year, more than 14-million passengers from 100 countries helped Skytrax produce ratings for 550 airports around the world. In the global rankings, Munich took the number one

position among airports handling 40 to 50-million passengers per year and sixth among all international airports. Munich Airport’s Terminal 2 (T2), a joint venture between Lufthansa and the Munich airport operator, was awarded second-place honours in the Best Terminal category. T2 is a central hub for Lufthansa and its partner airlines and includes five new Lufthansa lounges, as well as 27 additional gate positions that allow passengers to board aircraft directly without bus transportation. Since 2015, MCU has boasted five-star airport status, the only European airport to earn that honour.

Junkers factory back in business with replica The Junkers F 13, the world’s first all-metal transport aircraft, achieved its maiden flight 99 years ago. Developed in Germany by aviation entrepreneur Hugo Junkers at the end of World War I, the aircraft was retired in 1951, having provided commercial service for almost 20 years. Junkers’ fascination with flight, aeronautical science and the impending possibility of public air transportation inspired his design and series production of the F 13 in 1919. The airplane proved to be one of the most significant milestones in the history of air travel, with more than 300 sold during its 13-year production run. Junkers even created his own airline, Junkers Luftverkehr, which would later merge into German flag carrier Lufthansa. Now thanks to investor

An original Junkers F 13 in Munich’s Deutsches Museum.

Dieter Morszeck, grandson of the founder of Rimowa luggage, an historic F 13 replica has once again received type certification. The construction of the replica required long-forgotten construction techniques to be revived, including using corrugated aluminum. Under the supervision of the Swiss Federal Office for Civil Aviation (BAZL), engineers and aircraft craftsman were able to gradually bring a piece of aviation history

back to life. In building the replica, compromises with modern technology were made in as few areas as possible. For example, brakes and hydraulic shock absorbers were added to the landing gear. The search for a reliable powerplant resulted in the installation of a 450-horsepower Pratt & Whitney R-985 “Wasp Junior” radial engine, which is still in use worldwide. Another challenge was the

first flight, since there were no pilots with prior F 13 experience remaining to provide information on the aircraft’s flying qualities. Despite this, “everything went smoothly, and we were even surprised at the benign handling characteristics of the F 13,” said Morszeck. Further plans include smallscale production in response to individual market demand, using the experience gained in the construction of the first airplane.

Smart glasses and mobile app assist visually impaired passengers at Sea-Tac airport The Port of Seattle has launched a pilot programme to help blind and visually impaired passengers access a new assistive technology—Aira—to navigate Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac), safely and independently. Aira is a subscription service that includes a mobile app, a pair of smart glasses, AT&T data and by-the-minute access to live, human agents for a monthly fee. Agents serve as visual interpreters to accomplish a variety of tasks in the airport—from viewing a flight information board to finding the queue line at a security checkpoint to verifying their luggage at a baggage carousel. The Port of Seattle’s pilot programme will cover the cost of any passenger using the Aira service. “Our airport seeks to meet the needs of all travellers,” said Courtney Gregoire, commission president, Port of Seattle. “We

are prioritising customer service, innovation investments and community partnerships to make Seattle-Tacoma Airport more inclusive and the most accessible airport in the United States.” Sea-Tac Airport will cover the cost of all minutes used by Aira’s customers while they visit the airport, allowing them to use the service without deducting

any minutes from their regular plan. “Travel is such an important part of many people’s lives, whether they are blind, low vision, or sighted,” said Suman Kanuganti, CEO of Aira. “We are so proud to partner with SeaTac Airport to provide equal access to visual information to all airport travellers and expand

the Aira airport network to the West Coast.” With more than 20-million individuals who are blind or visually impaired living in the U.S., and more than 285-million worldwide, the programme is poised to have a major impact on these flyers as they travel to or from the Pacific Northwest.

Qantas begins operation of third-longest commercial flight Qantas’ first Perth to London flight took off on March 24, marking the start of the only direct air link between Australia and Europe—and currently the fastest way of travelling between the two continents. The history-making Flight QF9, carrying more than 200 passengers and 16 crew, pushed back just before 7pm on the evening of Saturday March 24 and landed in London at 5am on Sunday March 25.

Operated by a Boeing 7879, the flight reduces total travel time by eliminating stopovers and taking advantage of the most favourable winds on any given day without having to factor in a mid-point in the Middle East or Asia when choosing a flight path. Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce, who was one of the passengers on the inaugural flight, described it as a major milestone for Australia as well as global aviation.

“This is a truly historic flight that opens up a new era of travel. For the first time, Australia and Europe have a direct air link,” said Joyce. “The original Kangaroo Route from Australia to London was named for the seven stops it made over four days back in 1947. Now we can do it in a single leap. “The response to the flight has been amazing, both for the attention it’s received since we

announced it and the bookings we’ve seen coming in. It’s great for Australian tourism, for business travellers and for people visiting friends and family on both sides of the world.” Joyce said a huge amount of work had gone into improving the experience for customers taking the 17-hour journey, including a cabin design that gives passengers more space in every class. Qantas has worked with the University of Sydney to create a menu that helps the body cope better with jetlag and adjusted the timing of when food is served in order to encourage sleep. Healthy poke bowls and herbal tea, designed especially for Qantas, are among the new dining choices to increase hydration and help reduce jetlag. Qantas chose its newest Dreamliner Emily to operate the inaugural service, which features a striking livery based on the artwork Yam Dreaming by Indigenous artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye.

In recent years, technology has helped airlines and airports to achieve record low levels of mishandled luggage and in the build-up to the International Aviation Transport Association (IATA) Resolution 753, which will become effective on June 1, 2018, this rate is expected to drop even further, with airlines proactively boosting baggage handling efforts. Launched in 2013, IATA’s Resolution 753 is intended to encourage airlines to reduce mishandling by implementing crossindustry tracking for every baggage journey. “We have introduced a service that allows airlines to have baggage tracking implementation validated at their hub of full network, leading to a certification,” said Andrew Price head of global baggage operations, IATA. “Our team is also working on a platform that allows airlines to see where they have tracking gaps, so that they can prioritise their tracking capability to be aligned with their operational needs.” While some airlines have

already implemented advanced technology to be able to track baggage and improve operational efficiency, others are still in the process of implementing systems to be able to do so. RFID technology The airline industry has explored different technology approaches, ranging from digital GPS luggage tags to providing a door-to-door tracked service. In 2017, IATA, together with information technology company SITA, published a detailed business case focusing on the concept, which estimated that Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology could reduce the number of mishandled bags by an extra 25 per cent by 2020. The research also showed that the use of RFID technology could save the air transport industry $3-billion in baggage mishandling costs. The benefits of RFID have already been recognised by industry players. A prominent example is Delta Air Lines, which in 2016

invested $50-million to deploy RFID at 344 stations. Collaborating with stakeholders While IATA Resolution 753 applies only to IATA’s member airlines, in many cases airlines will be seeking the support from stakeholders involved in the baggage journey—such as airports and ground handlers. “A bag is typically touched 13 times on a simple baggage journey, so the role of the airport and the ground handler is crucial to ensure mishandling rates continue to fall,” said Price. Price’s vision of the future begins with baggage tracking as a short-term target, however he is already looking to a future when complete automation is available and more services and options will be introduced. “My personal ideal baggage journey is one where travelling with a checked bag is easier than travelling with cabin luggage,” said Price.

The app offers a convenient, user-friendly way to purchase select Travel Guard products and services that are offered as specific blocks of insurance coverage up to 90 days, for use within 365 days from the date of purchase. When the app’s geolocation feature senses that the customer has arrived at an airport or a border crossing into the United States, a notification is sent to the customer’s iPhone to ask whether he or she wants to activate the purchased insurance. Then, for each hour the coverage is activated, the app automatically subtracts that time from the block of coverage purchased.

Richmond honours ‘Once Upon A Time’ with its own special day The City of Richmond, the real life setting for the fictional town of Storybrooke, paid tribute to the producers, cast and crew of the acclaimed television series, Once Upon A Time on the Easter long weekend as the show neared the end of its seven-season run. “Once Upon a Time entertained television audiences for seven highly successful seasons,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “It also produced millions of dollars of economic impact for our local and provincial economy and it raised the international profile of Richmond. Tourists from around the world have visited historic Steveston Village to see the real life setting for Storybrooke. We’re pleased to offer our congratulations and thanks to the producers, cast and crew as they conclude the series’ successful run.” Since 2011, the streets of historic Steveston Village as well as many popular local businesses and tourism sites have regularly been transformed overnight to become Storybrooke scenes— Granny’s Café, Storybrooke Post Office, Storybrooke Country Bread, Mr. Gold Pawnbroker and Antiquities Dealer and more. An economic impact study completed for The Motion Picture Association of Canada this year found that over its seven seasons Once Upon A Time production was responsible for 7,727 full time equivalent jobs and was responsible for $382.4-million in direct production expenditure in British Columbia. The series was also a strong tourist attraction, with many visitors to Tourism Richmond’s tourism information centre in Steveston Village, reporting they had come specifically to visit Storybrooke.

With series production recently returning to Steveston to shoot scenes for the series’ final episodes, Mayor Brodie visited the set on March 29 to declare the date as Once Upon A Time Day in Richmond. Brodie, who was featured in the show’s season 1 DVD bonus section as the “real Mayor of Storybrooke,” thanked the producers, cast and crew for their contributions to the community. Richmond prides itself as a filmfriendly community and has set new records for filming over the past three years. More than 200 days of filming activity took place in both 2016 and 2017. In recent years, major motion pictures such as Deadpool, War for the Planet of the Apes and Godzilla undertook extended shooting in Richmond. Numerous TV series, including Once Upon A Time, Supernatural and The Magicians also regularly film in Richmond.

Don’t drive with snow tires after winter Depending on where you drive in Canada, many car owners have both all-season tires and snow tires. All-season tires are built to provide a relatively quite ride, good tread life and fuel economy. They offer versatile performance and are designed to perform well in a variety of conditions, providing a combination of the benefits from summer and winter tires. They are also a great option for drivers who do not encounter extreme cold, ice and snow in the winter months. Snow tires are needed where the combination of cold temperatures, black ice and snow make driving conditions unpredictable. These conditions challenge tires to provide traction, which can be best met by snow tires, which are specially designed for performance in these conditions. For car owners who use both sets of tires throughout the year, it is important to remember to switch tires as the seasons change. Case in point: The owner of a 1987 Mercedes 190E, who had driven his vehicle with snow tires on until August, brought the vehicle in for servicing with front tires treads that had the most unusual and most severe cupped wear we had ever seen. Inspection of the steering,

Uneven tire wear affects the life and performance of tires and the handling of the vehicle.

suspension and wheel alignment ruled out these mechanical areas as a cause of the tire wear, as they all proved to be in good working condition. Snow tires are made with a formulated trade compound that is designed to stay soft in wintry weather. That is why they stick better on frozen roads. But, that softness also means they wear out faster. According to Consumer Reports, while snow tires are better at accelerating through snow, in summer conditions, they generally do not stop well on either dry or wet surfaces, often needing several more car lengths to do so than all-season tires. With all the twists, turns and bumps the Mercedes owner had

encountered in everyday summer driving, his snow tires had become severely worn. If he had removed his winter tires in April, which is appropriate in the Vancouver area, the tires would still be in great shape. While this occurred on an older Mercedes, the same scenario can occur on several types of cars and trucks if their winter tires are not changed at the right time of year. If you use winter and summer tires, winter tires should be put on the vehicle in November and summer tires in April. Additionally, whether the vehicle is being driven with winter or summer tires, make sure they are at the right tire pressure for the vehicle—the numbers on the sticker inside the vehicle’s door. Tire pressure drops with the temperature, so, in winter, check tire pressure at least once a month.

Tires are an extremely important vehicle component and should be checked periodically to see how they’re faring.
