Change is in the air at YVR

There are several key projects currently taking place at YVR that will enhance the airport experience. This includes its biggest sustainability projects to date, new parking options, terminal expansions and much more. Some ongoing projects on Sea

Island this month include: • Construction is underway to prepare for Phase II of the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport. This phase is scheduled to open in Spring 2019 and will deliver 7,803 square metres

Hainan Airlines Continued from page 1 The new service has direct economic benefits to the B.C. region. The operational and tourism impacts contribute $12.4-million in economic output and more than $6-million in GDP for B.C. “The Shenzhen-TianjinVancouver service will further enhance Hainan Airlines’ network in Canada,” said Yang Fei, general manager of marketing, Hainan Airlines. “The new route

will provide passengers with more travel options and convenience and facilitate prosperous development between our two countries.” New services such as this are made possible because of YVR’s five-year airline rates and charges program, ConnectYVR. The program offers some of the lowest landing fees to airlines to attract and incent them to grow sustainably at YVR.

Chicago Continued from page 1 The flight departs YVR at 11pm and arrives at ORD at 5:14am the next day. The return flight leaves ORD at 8:35pm and arrives at YVR at 11:14pm. “American has proudly served Vancouver for more than 30 years and Chicago will become a great addition to our existing network,” said Sean Lee, American Airlines general manager for YVR. “There is growing demand for travel

between the U.S. and Canada and American is meeting that demand with a great product, operated by the best team that can connect travellers to the largest network in the world.” The route is operated on a Boeing 737-800 with seat capacity for 160 passengers, featuring 16 Business Class recliner seats, 30 Main Cabin Extra seats, and 114 standard Economy seats.

of additional retail space. Starting on Monday, June 11, there will be lane closures in both directions on Grant McConachie Way, lasting for a period of approximately two weeks. These lane closures are expected to increase travel time to and from the airport. • Various early works are continuing in the old Value Lot (adjacent to the Parkade) to prepare for the construction of a new six-storey parking lot and Central Utilities Building. This work includes fence and hoarding installation, grubbing, some minor traffic control measures around the exit toll plaza and exploration work on roadways nearby. • As part of the construction taking place east of the parkade, utilities work has started and involves hydrovac investigation. The second

phase of this work begins Monday, June 11. This will have progressive lane closures along Westbound Grant McConachie and areas inside Chester Johnson Park. The hours of work will continue to be 12am-8am. Construction will occur in close proximity to the parkade entry ramps and the car rental return lanes, however, they will remain open at all times. A small portion of this work will include a temporary sidewalk diversion. Passengers will be assisted around the work area by traffic control personnel. • As part of the jetSet Parking lot reconfiguration project, the cell phone lot has been temporarily relocated. There is clear directional signage to the interim lot. Once the cell phone lot reopens, it will be paved and have WiFi, offering an improved

Sacramento Continued from page 1 The city is well-known as one of the sunniest locations in the world during the summer season and for being a city of trees, rivers, parks and attractions. “We are delighted to launch the only non-stop flights from Canada to Sacramento, offering convenience to both business and leisure customers travelling between B.C. and Sacramento,” said Benjamin Smith, president, passenger airlines at Air Canada.

Construction Update

customer experience. • The curbside enhancement project continues, which includes work to the sidewalk along the Departures level. There are several construction zones set up along the Departures level that impact sidewalk and curb access. • Work is taking place in the Domestic Transfer and In Transit Pre-Clearance Facilities, as well as the International Terminal security screening area, to introduce CATSA Plus, a high-performance security screening system. Passenger routing may be modified for short periods of time around work areas. Any noisy work will take place at night to limit disruptions. • Construction has begun on the North Runway End Safety Area (RESA). All YVR’s runways will have 300-metre RESAs,

“As the largest foreign carrier serving the U.S., we also look forward to connecting customers from California’s capital city area onward through our extensive global network via our Vancouver transpacific hub.” The new, daily service operates on an Air Canada Express CRJ-900 76-seat aircraft configured with a choice of Business or Economy classes of service. The flight departs YVR at 8:55am and

double the recommended Canadian standards. RESAs protect the travelling public in the unlikely event of an aircraft overrun or undershoot. This construction is expected to be completed in November and will include night time work. The Airport Authority is doing its best to minimize impact to its neighbours in Richmond, Vancouver’s south slope and Burkeville and encourages anyone who has more questions about construction to visit its website or to email RESAinfo@yvr.ca. • Preparation work is underway as utilities are being relocated as part of the above-mentioned North Runway RESA project. Equipment and material will be visible from Ferguson Road. For more information on all these projects, please visit yvr.ca/ construction.

In addition to offering passengers another key location, the new service brings considerable economic benefits to B.C. Ten B.C. and Yukon Indigenous artists were recognized at the 2018 YVR Art Foundation scholarship awards, which also included the unveiling of the 2017 scholarship recipients’ art work at YVR. YVRAF art scholarships are awarded annually to artists of British Columbia and Yukon Indigenous ancestry in two categories: Youth (under age 27) and Mid-Career (ages 27 and up). The recipients receive a $5,000 scholarship to attend a formal art institution or study with an artist mentor over the course of one year. Mid-Career recipients will work with a master artist, attend an art institution or undertake a special project that is of cultural significance to their community. At the end of their scholarship year, recipients are invited back to Vancouver to display their artwork at the awards event,

followed by an exhibition of their work at YVR for one year. “It is with great pleasure that we are awarding the 2018 scholarships to such a welldeserving group of individuals,” said Susan Jackson, executive director, YVR Art Foundation. “For 13 years, winning a YVR Art Foundation scholarship has provided early recognition and support for young and mid-career artists, many of whom have gone on to thriving art careers. We are excited to encourage a new generation of artists in their creative and professional development.” The recipients of the 2018 YVR Art Foundation Youth Art Scholarships are: • Emma Frank, age 23, K’omoks, Namgis, Eh-ChoDene, from Comox • Sage Nowak, age 25, Tahltan/Vuntut Gwitchin, from Whitehorse • Sesyaz Saunders, age 20,

Boeing has launched new workforce development programs, the latest step in fulfilling its 2017 pledge to invest $300-million in employees, infrastructure and local communities because of U.S. tax reform. The new programs come after the company crowdsourced more than 40,000 ideas from employees through an online survey and dozens of iPad-equipped Idea Stations at Boeing sites worldwide. “When we asked our people how best to invest in their learning and development they spoke up loud and clear,” said Heidi Capozzi, senior vice president of Human Resources. “We listened and read every single idea that was submitted. Our long-term plans represent a down payment on the future of our employees and tomorrow’s technical workforce.” The workforce development programs will launch an online network of resources designed to make learning more accessible to employees

at all levels of the company. A new partnership with Degreed.com will provide employees with access to online lessons, certification courses and degree programs. The investment will also fund several programs to help employees enhance technical skills and understand industry trends, tools and technologies. The first program will focus on digital literacy, a key enabler of Boeing’s growth strategies. The company plans to announce additional employee education investments later this year. Boeing also made a $6-million investment in the future technical workforce through a partnership with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and several historically Black Colleges and Universities. The investment will support scholarships, internships and immersive boot camp programs to help students experience what it’s like to work at Boeing.

YVR launches world’s most efficient, self-service bag drop system YVR’s Innovative Travel Solutions (ITS) and Glidepath, one of the world’s leaders in airport baggage handling, recently celebrated the installation of the first CHECKITXPRESS self-bag drop unit at YVR. CHECKITXPRESS is the world’s most accessible, efficient and intuitive self-service bag drop on the market, improving speed and ease of use for travellers regardless of age, digital fluency, language or mobility. The collaboration between a Canadian airport and a New Zealand baggage handling solutions company brought together two leaders in airport innovation. Glidepath and ITS applied ergonomic design principles by lowering the profile of the conveyor to 10 centimetres off the floor and creating durable ramps to wheel bags onto the conveyor. This allows CHECKITXPRESS to be accessible from multiple sides, offering a user-friendly bag-

drop for all travellers. This industry-first ultimately creates a more seamless and enjoyable travel experience for everyone. CHECKITXPRESS also takes up less space in airport terminals and helps alleviate congestion in the bag drop area. Airports benefit by avoiding costly terminal expansions and

saving valuable space for other airport features, amenities and procedures, which ultimately helps increase overall competitiveness. “We strive to deliver an outstanding experience for every traveller that comes through YVR,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “This is an exciting time for us and offering

solutions that are more accessible, efficient and intuitive enables us to prioritize speed and ease of movement for everyone, which improves overall traveller satisfaction. We’re excited to be launching CHECKITXPRESS at YVR as a major step forward in becoming a world class sustainable hub airport.” Through its innovative cam-

era technology and superior first-time read-rates on baggage, CHECKITXPRESS has achieved some of the quickest customer processing times in the industry, with no agent intervention or assistance required. This results in a cost-effective solution that reduces passenger wait times, while taking pressure off essential airport personnel. “Glidepath is proud to partner with North America’s best airport on this major milestone for our industry,” said Sir Ken Stevens, chairman of Glidepath. “The holistic collaboration allowed us to create a truly unique product designed for the airport of the future.” With the installation of the first CHECKITXPRESS at YVR, ITS and Glidepath will roll out more units in the airport over the course of the year. The team is also planning to expand CHECKITXPRESS to other airports around the world.

WestJet’s new Dreamliner ‘Spirit of Canada’ unveiled WestJet has unveiled its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner livery, logo and cabin interior, which will include the airline’s firstever business class cabin. The reveal was part of WestJet’s leadup to the arrival of its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners in early 2019. “The introduction of Boeing’s 787-9 Dreamliner, a state-ofthe-art aircraft, is the dawn of a new era for WestJet and the next step in our transformation to a global network airline,” said Ed Sims, WestJet president and CEO. “The updated livery is modern and dynamic while the interior is world-class, distinctly Canadian and uniquely WestJet. Both reflect WestJet’s transition from a regional airline in 1996 to a new era of connecting Canada with the world and bringing the world to Canada.” WestJet has ordered 10 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft

and placed options for another 10, all of which will feature the new livery, logo and interior. Three-class cabin The airline’s 787-9 Dreamliner features a three-class cabin including business class seating, premium economy and economy seating. The design was created by PriestmanGoode, a design consultancy firm located in London, England, specializing in transportation and travel branding. Drawing from Canadian themes, the cabin interior welcomes guests with a rich colour palette: a soothing alpine lake blue in Economy class; aurorainspired shades and tones in Premium Economy; and in Business class, luxuriously rich earth tones inspired by the splendour of Canadian summers. Business class will feature touchscreen service and on-

demand dining that allows the traveller to define exactly how they like to fly. Lay-flat mattresses, bedding and turn-down service will also be offered to allow WestJet guests the opportunity to enjoy a tranquil flight. Premium Economy will include a premium menu and comfort enhancements such as a self-serve social area and more space to move and relax. Economy class will feature oversized, self-dimming windows and leading-edge in-flight entertainment and connectivity with in-seat device charging. Government passes Transportation Modernization Act Last month, after a year of debate, Transport Bill C-49 was passed by elected lawmakers and the Canadian Senate. Also known as the Transportation Modernization Act, Bill C-49 affects the air transportation system in the following ways: • The foreign ownership limit in airlines such as Air Canada and WestJet will be raised to 49 percent, from its current 25 per cent limit. • The Canadian Transportation Agency is to launch consultations to develop an air travellers’ rights charter with clear rules about how airlines in Canada must treat passengers. • Under the charter, passengers could receive financial compensation in case

of denied boarding during overbooking, delays and cancellations of flights and loss of their luggage. The charter would also frame lengthy delays on the tarmac. • Air carriers would not be held responsible for delays or cancellations caused by events beyond their control

such as weather, air traffic or a security threat. • The bill also authorizes the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) to enter into agreements for the delivery of screening services on a cost-recovery basis. “The CTA [Canadian Transport Agency] will get to work right away and in the coming months will consult with Canadians and all those involved in this charter—the airlines and others—so that this year, we can present an air travellers’ rights charter,” said Transport Minister Marc Garneau. The obligations of air carriers to their passengers will have to be “explained in a simple and clear way,” said Garneau.

uniform and current style. The logo also now uses a single colour to soften the regional emphasis on “West.” The Maple Leaf symbol has been retained, albeit with an updated stylized look, appearing on the aircraft’s tail. In another nod to WestJet’s heritage, the form of the Canadian flag appears at the front of the aircraft.

The new livery will also marry both of Canada’s official languages with the words “The Spirit of Canada” appearing on one side of the aircraft and the French translation, “L’esprit du Canada” on the other, both extending across the middle of the aircraft fuselage. The livery will gradually appear across WestJet’s entire fleet as new aircraft are deliv-

ered in 2018 and as aircraft are repainted in their normal cycle. The Boeing 737 MAX-8 will be the first aircraft in the new livery. This summer, WestJet’s growing fleet will operate an average of 777 daily flights to 90 destinations. For more information on WestJet flights from YVR, visit westjet.com.

The 2019 competition asks teams to respond to one of the following challenges: • Electrification: How can we fly further, longer and cleaner by developing embedded electrical energy systems? • Data Services: What innovative applications and services can you create based on Airbus data? • Cyber Security: How can we securely and seamlessly authenticate travellers while minimizing the impact on passengers, airport security and airlines? • Internet of Things: How can the power of loT revolutionize the passenger experience or improve collaboration in the aerospace industry? • Artificial Intelligence: In the future of aerospace of industrial manufacturing, how can

we use AI to identify opportunities or entirely new business models? • Mixed Reality: How can the aerospace industry put Apple and Google’s mass market Mixed Reality apps to work? Teams of three to four students will submit their Round 1 ideas from September to end of November 2018. Airbus specialists will assess the ideas and select the 50 top teams to go through to Round 2. These teams will have three months to develop their idea further with support from Airbus mentors and specialists before a second assessment, where up to six teams will be selected for the final. Before pitching to a jury of industry experts, the finalist teams will be invited to work in Airbus facilities and develop their proposals with Airbus’ innovation and digital specialists. Boeing 737 MAX 8 joins the Sunwing fleet

Boeing 737 MAX 8 joins the Sunwing Fleet—left to right, John L. Plueger, chief executive officer and president of Air Lease Corporation; Mark Williams, president of Sunwing Airlines; Matthew J Hart, Air Lease Corporation chairman, Audit Committee, Governance Committee; Tobias Lutterodt, sales director The Boeing Company.

Leisure airline carrier Sunwing Airlines has taken delivery of its first brand-new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. The aircraft is the first of four new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft acquired by Sunwing as part of a lease agreement with Air Lease Corporation. The $350-million deal also includes the acquisition of two

further Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The second Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft will be delivered this month, with the remaining two 737 MAX planes anticipated to be delivered in 2019. “The 737 MAX 8 aircraft is an integral part of Sunwing’s overall expansion plans across an increasing number of both Canadian and U.S. gateways and illustrates the evolution of the company,” said Mark Williams, president of Sunwing Airlines. “Sunwing may have increased in scale, however, what drove the company in the early 2000s is still central to our business today—in particular, the airline’s commitment to its passengers that when they travel with Sunwing, they travel with an award-winning airline and one

of Canada’s most modern fleets.” The 737 MAX 8 comes with the latest technology, uses less fuel and reduces CO2 emissions by 20 per cent compared to the older aircraft that it replaces. Sunwing has more flights to the south than any other leisure carrier, with direct service from 33 gateways across Canada to more than 45 popular sun destinations. All Sunwing vacation packages include return flights on Sunwing Airlines with inflight service that includes a sparkling wine toast, complimentary nonalcoholic beverage service and buy-on-board selection of light meals and snacks. Air Canada and Air China sign first China-North American airline joint venture agreement Air Canada and Air China have signed the first joint venture agreement between a North American and a Chinese airline, deepening the two carriers’ longstanding partnership. The joint venture allows the two countries’ flag carriers to expand their existing codeshare relationship on flights between Canada and China. In addition, both carriers will be able to increase commercial cooperation on key connecting domestic flights in both countries to provide customers travelling between the two countries with greater benefits, including access to a range of flights, products and services. “The Sino-Canada market is one of the important long-haul markets to Air China, which has been developed rapidly in recent years with an increase of 17.8-per cent in 2017,” said Jianjiang Cai, chairman of Air China Limited. “Air China and Air Canada as Star Alliance members have the foundation of a profound cooperation and under a joint venture framework will offer a wider range of products and quality services, and provide more flexible flight choices, favourable fare products and seamless travel experiences for customers. Moreover, both parties will take the China-Canada Year of Tourism as an opportunity to support the tourism, trade and culture exchanges for both countries.” In the last two years, Air China has launched flights directly linking Beijing with Montreal, while Air Canada has launched new non-stop flights between Montreal and Shanghai to meet growth in demand. The two carriers now operate up to a total of 52 trans-Pacific flights per week between Canada and China from Vancouver,

Toronto and Montreal to and from Beijing and Shanghai. “Our joint venture agreement with Air China, the highly respected flag carrier of the People’s Republic of China, is an important strategy in our global expansion as it significantly increases Air Canada’s presence in an aviation market set to become the world’s largest by 2022,” said Calin Rovinescu, Air Canada’s president and chief executive officer. “Air Canada is

honoured to formalize this strategic partnership with Air China during the Canada-China Year of Tourism to offer customers travelling between our two countries an unparalleled network and expansive options for travel ease. Having served China for more than 30 years, and as demonstrated by Air Canada’s average annual capacity growth of 12.5-per cent over five years and the $2-billion of aircraft assets currently committed on routes

Though the National Historic Site has lain empty for more than 300 years, the Huu-ay-aht First Nations has brought Kiixin back to life as an authentic tourism experience that brings visitors intimately close to the region’s culture, history and nature. During the Kiixin experience, guests hike the trail to the site, exploring Vancouver Island’s pristine old-growth rainforest and beautiful protected beaches. Alaska Airlines moves to marine-friendly stir sticks Starting July 16, 2018, Alaska Airlines will replace single-use, non-recyclable, plastic stir straws and citrus picks with sustainable alternatives in its airport lounges and on all domestic and international commercial flights. The initiative is one of many in Alaska Airlines’ push for sustainability and its goal of reducing inflight waste per passenger going to landfills by 70 per cent by 2020. Alaska Airlines has partnered

with Lonely Whale, an incubator that drives impactful, marketbased change on behalf of the Earth’s oceans. Last year, Lonely Whale launched For a Strawless Ocean, a free public resource to reduce ocean plastic pollution. Starting with the elimination of single-use straws, the resource was designed as a toolkit to educate and demonstrate practical use cases. “Whether providing fantastic service or leading in sustain-

ability, caring about people and communities is in our DNA,” said Diana Birkett Rakow, Alaska Airlines’ vice president of external relations. “Without a doubt, we fly to some of the most beautiful places on earth, including many communities that depend on healthy oceans. We’re thrilled to partner with Lonely Whale to take this next step in our sustainability journey and help keep the places we live and fly beautiful for

years to come. It’s especially appropriate now as ending plastic pollution was the theme for Earth Day this year.” On April 22, the Earth Day Network declared ending plastic pollution to be the theme for Earth Day this year. The group challenged everyone to reduce the amount of plastic they consume. Plastic straws are of special concern because they cannot be recycled and have been shown to kill birds and other marine life. In 2017, Alaska Airlines handed out 22-million plastic stir straws and citrus picks. Those two items will be replaced starting in July with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified, white birch stir sticks and a bamboo alternative for the citrus pick. Non-plastic, marine-friendly straws will be made available to guests with special needs and upon request. Since it started auditing its recycling efforts in 2010, Alaska Airlines has reduced passenger waste to landfill by 54 per cent, essentially cutting waste in half. In the last eight years, flight attendants captured 12,000 tons of recyclable materials, about the same weight of 244 Boeing

To further reduce environmental impact, Alaska Airlines has replaced bottled beer with aluminum cans, which are lighter and easier to recycle; and introduced a policy to refill plastic cups rather than requiring a new cup for every round of beverage service. Alaska Airlines awarded top ranking in satisfaction study for 11th consecutive year For the 11th year in a row, Alaska Airlines has been recognized as the highest ranked airline in customer satisfaction among traditional carriers in the J.D. Power 2018 North America Airline Satisfaction Study. The study is based on 11,508 responses. It measures the satisfaction of business and leisure

travellers who flew a major North America carrier between April 2017 and March 2018. Alaska won among traditional airlines with an overall score of 775, up 10 points from 2017, and highest of any traditional airline across five categories, including aircraft; cost and fees; boarding/ deplaning/baggage; flight crew;

and check-in. The J.D. Power ranking comes as the airline moves into its final stages of its integration with Virgin America. The integration is more than 75 per cent complete after having moved to one airport brand, website, mobile app and call center in late April.

According to report, inflight WiFi calms passengers Research Study explores the changing behaviours of airline passengers across the world as it pertains to inflight connec-

According to a recent Global Traveller Study by in-flight broadband Internet service provider Gogo, more than 75 per cent of travellers said having inflight internet makes them feel less anxious because they can stay in contact with friends and family on the ground. Sixty-five per cent said it makes them feel less anxious because they can stay connected to work. Not only do passengers want to be connected, their expectation is to be connected in the same way while in flight as they are on the ground, which means multiple screens doing multiple activities. “Today, we see a shift as inflight internet moves from being a luxury to an expectation for travellers around the world,” said Alyssa Hayes, director of insights at Gogo. “The importance of internet in the booking process has been increasing as now one-third of passengers are looking for inflight internet

Seatback Screens aren’t dead Passengers still like seatback screens. Half (47 per cent) of air travellers prefer seatback screens in flight versus 33 per cent who prefer their own personal devices. The desire for people to stay connected and in contact with the ground is prevalent; passengers look to not just browse the internet but also engage with social media, read the news and check their email.” Other key findings from the report include: Mobile is king In terms of devices brought on the plane, 90 per cent of passengers bring a mobile device, 59 per cent bring a laptop and 48 per cent bring a tablet. To celebrate the Royal wedding, any customer called Harry, Meghan or Megan departing from Terminal 5 on May 19 was invited to use the airline’s First lounge, accessed through the exclusive First Wing. The celebrations didn’t stop there as individual lemon and elderflower Victoria sponges; the same flavour as Harry and

Meghan’s wedding cake, were given out to British Airways’ customers departing from Heathrow. Extra champagne was also loaded on to the Toronto celebration flight and the ‘Royal Crew’ gave every customer on board a personal bottle of Castelnau Blanc du Blanc to enjoy alongside their individual celebratory wedding cake. Cathay Pacific to fly new Airbus aircraft home using alternative jet fuel

Cathay Pacific is underscoring its strong commitment to eco-efficiency by planning to use a blend of alternative jet fuel to fly its new fleet of Airbus A350-1000 aircraft from France to their Hong Kong home. The airline has 20 of these technologically-advanced aircraft on order for delivery over the next four years. Cathay’s first A350-1000 will depart Airbus headquarters in Toulouse on June 19. A further seven aircraft are due for delivery by the end of 2018. “We have been at the forefront of many initiatives to reduce the impact of greenhouse gas emissions,” said Rupert Hogg, Cathay Pacific chief executive officer. “Achieving carbon neutral growth from 2020 is an important target that we take seriously and using alternative fuels is one of the key strategies in helping us to do so. We will continue to support the development and usage of biofuel to reach mainstream commercial viability.” Cathay Pacific operated the longest biofuel delivery flight at the time when taking delivery of its first Airbus A350-900 aircraft in 2016. Twentytwo aircraft of this type have so far been delivered with a 10 per cent blend of alternative jet fuel in their tanks. Compared to traditional jet fuel, biofuel can

reduce life cycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80 per cent. Cathay Pacific is the world’s first airline to invest in an aviation biofuel company. In 2014, it became an equity investor in US-based Fulcrum BioEnergy Inc., which focuses on turning municipal solid waste into sustainable aviation fuel. In May 2018, Fulcrum broke ground on its first commercial-scale plant in Nevada. When the plant begins operations in 2020, it will produce more than 37-million litres of fuel per year. Cathay Pacific will be one of the first airlines to fly on fuel produced from this facility.

Opening ceremony at 2017 City of Richmond Canada Day celebration. Photo: courtesy City of Richmond.

Following on the heels of the Maritime Festival on Saturday, July 28-29, 2018, on July 1, Richmond will host the ultimate birthday party. The annual Richmond Canada Day in Steveston will feature a free, full-day street party throughout Steveston Village alongside the much-beloved Steveston Salmon Festival. A headline performance by Juno Award-winning blues, reggae rock band Big Sugar and fireworks over the Fraser River will cap off the celebrations. Richmond Canada Day in Steveston is presented by Vancouver International Airport (YVR). Highlighting the day is the Steveston Salmon Festival, known as Canada’s biggest little birthday party. The festival is famous for its salmon barbecue where more than 500 kilograms of wild salmon filets are grilled over open fire pits. An annual tradition since 1945, the Salmon Festival also features a huge Canada Day Parade through historic Steveston Village. Elsewhere in the village, the Canada Day Street Party will feature 50 diverse performances on eight stages including

Main Stage performances by Big Sugar, Terra Lightfoot and Vince Vaccaro. The street party also features an artisan village, marketplace and plenty of food trucks. New this year is the Hockey Zone, featuring a fun 3-on-3 competition in honour of Canada’s favourite national sport, with a special guest appearance by Vancouver Canucks mascot Fin. Visitors can also explore the Village, where there will be additional activities at the Gulf of Georgia National Historic Site, Steveston Interurban Tram and Steveston Museum. The day kicks off with the Salmon Festival’s pancake breakfast at 6:30am, followed by a special Canada Day flagraising ceremony at 8:40am. The Canada Day Parade gets underway at 10am. Big Sugar will hit the Bayview Stage at 9pm, followed immediately at 10:15pm by a fireworks show presented by Dueck GM and held along the historic Steveston waterfront. All events are free admission. City of Richmond a finalist in Smart Cities Challenge The City of Richmond has been named as one of 20 finalists in the Smart Cities Challenge. The Smart Cities Challenge is a panCanadian competition open to communities of all sizes, including municipalities, regional governments and Indigenous communities. The Challenge encourages communities to adopt a smart cities approach to improve the lives of their residents through innovation, data and connected technology. More than 200 submissions were received from across Canada in all categories and finalists were selected by a hand-picked national jury. In its category, Richmond is competing against nine other finalists for one of two $10-million prizes. Richmond’s Smart Cities Challenge submission has proposed creation of an Intelligent Operation Hub that will seamlessly integrate data and coordinate emergency response by all levels of government. Existing and new data streams and asset management platforms would be linked across jurisdictions to effectively

respond to incidents that could be as small as traffic congestion due to a rain event, or as big as a major earthquake. The initiative is designed to enhance the daily lives of citizens, while improving community resilience to major events and protecting critical local and national infrastructure in Richmond. “This is a tremendous honour and we are very excited about the next phase of the competition,” said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “We believe our proposal for an Intelligent Operation Hub is of both local and national importance and offers huge opportunities to improve our residents’ overall quality of life, while ensuring our community and economy are resilient in the face of any level of emergency.” As a finalist, Richmond will now receive $250,000 to support development of a more detailed business case proposal to be submitted later this year. To learn more about the competition and to read the City of Richmond’s full submission, visit smartcity.richmond.ca.

Auto Repair and Maintenance By Bernie Pawlik

Sticky accelerator pedals, a safety reminder In 2013, Toyota took a great deal of heat for accelerator pedals that began mysteriously getting stuck in a number of its vehicles. This unintended acceleration, or sticky accelerator problem, ultimately caused the car manufacturer to reach a $1.2-billion settlement with the U.S. Justice Department. This issue, however, is not unique to Toyota. The US NHTSA (National Highway & Transportation Safety Agency) has investigated complaints of this concern for many years from other manufacturers such as Ford and Chrysler. Unintended acceleration by a vehicle is most certainly a serious concern and one that warrants immediate correction if it occurs. Through the years, my automotive shop has serviced several cars that have had sticking accelerator pedals. Some were due to deficiencies in the throttle cable, while others were due to a floor mat holding the pedal down. While the cable usually requires professional repair by an automotive mechanic, a floor matcaused acceleration problem can be prevented if the mat is properly fitted so that it does not interfere with the movement of the accelerator, brake and/or clutch pedal. Though it is unlikely to ever
