On June 14, YVR broke ground on several capital construction projects that will enhance the airport experience and improve YVR’s competitive position as a world-class connecting hub. The projects are part of YVR’s multi-year expansion plans that will see the airport complete 75 major projects, totaling $9.1-billion over the next 20 years. They include building one of the largest GeoExchange systems in Canada, significant terminal expansions, new parking options and improved vehicle rental facilities. Vancouver Airport Authority president and CEO Craig Richmond was joined by British Columbia Premier John Horgan; Ken Hardie, Member of Parliament for FleetwoodPort Kells; and Fiona Famulak, President of the Vancouver Regional Construction Association to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new construction projects. New Air Canada services to Zurich and Paris celebrated at YVR
Last month, YVR and Air Canada celebrated the launch of two new, non-stop seasonal services: Air Canada’s thrice-weekly service to Zurich and four-time weekly service to Paris.
YVR recently celebrated the launch of two new, non-stop seasonal services. The new routes will further connect YVR’s passengers with two key European cities: Zurich and Paris. “I would like to thank Air Canada for their ongoing support of YVR and providing our passengers with such exciting bucketlist travel destinations just in time for the busy summer season,” said Anne Murray, vice president, airline business development and public affairs, Vancouver Airport Authority. “Both new services further connect Europe and British Columbia, providing new opportunities to grow commercial relations in business, technology, education and tourism.” These new services have a direct economic benefit, generating $10.8-million in total economic output for British Columbia.
Air Canada will service the new routes with its state-of-the-art 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, featuring Air Canada’s Signature Class lie-flat pod suites, Premium Economy and Economy Class seats. “We are delighted to launch new non-stop flights from Vancouver to Zurich and to Paris, both onboard our state-of-the-art Boeing 787 Dreamliners,” said Benjamin Smith, president, passenger airlines at Air Canada. “The strategic addition of these seasonal international flights further strengthens our YVR hub, which combined with our extensive North American network, provides excellent options for travellers from B.C. and the North American west coast to Europe, and as well as for European visitors and beyond to western Canada and the Pacific Northwest.” See ZURICH page 2

Change is in the air and on the ground at YVR
There are several key projects currently taking place at YVR that will enhance the airport experience. This includes YVR’s biggest sustainability projects to date, new parking options, terminal expansions and much more. Following are this month’s ongoing projects on Sea Island: • Construction to prepare for Phase II of the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport. This phase is scheduled to open in Spring 2019 and will deliver more than 7,800 square metres of additional retail space. In anticipation of this opening, BC Hydro is doing utilities work around the intersection of Grant McConachie Way and Templeton Street. • As part of the above-mentioned work, there are lane closures on Miller Road. Work will occur intermittently until midJuly and will only take place during the day. Access will be maintained, with one lane kept open at all times in both directions during work hours. At the end of each shift, all lanes will be re-opened. • Various early works are continuing in the old Value Lot (adjacent to the Parkade) to prepare for the construction of a new six-storey parking lot and Central Utilities Building. This
work includes fence and hoarding installation, grubbing, some minor traffic control measures around the exit toll plaza and exploration work on nearby roadways. • As part of the abovementioned project, utilities work involving hydrovac investigation
Travel tips Continued from page 1 • Given recent parking changes at YVR, we recommend having a parking plan and reserving your spot in advance at yvr.ca/parking to guarantee your preferred lot. • Consider taking the Canada Line to YVR. It’s quick and efficient, delivering you to the terminal door in 26 minutes or less. • Check with your airline and arrive at the recommended time for your flight. This is typically 90 minutes before a domestic flight, two hours before a flight to the U.S. and
three hours prior to an international flight. • Make sure you say hello to the YVR Ambassador Dogs, part of the Less Airport Stress Initiative (LASI). The dogs are around the terminal Mondays through Fridays from 11am to 1pm and can be easily identified by their YVR-branded leashes and St. John Ambulance bandanas. • Once through security, relax and enjoy a variety of summer activities including live entertainment in the terminal every Wednesday, Friday
is continuing. This work will take place in phases, overnight. There will be no power disruption. • As part of the jetSet Parking lot reconfiguration project, the cell phone lot has been temporarily relocated. There is clear directional signage to the interim lot.
and Sunday from 10am to 1pm. • YVR has more than 170 shops, services and restaurants. For a complete list, visit yvr.ca. Check out YVR Food on the Fly for a broad selection of in-flight food. Your favourite YVR restaurant will package up a meal or snack to take with you on the flight. Need more information? Keep an eye out for YVR’s friendly group of Customer Care employees in blue jackets and Green Coat volunteers.
When construction is complete, it will be paved and have WiFi, offering an improved customer experience. • In mid-July, a section of McDonald Road will be permanently closed to prepare the site for upcoming construction. This work is part of the project to extend the east apron for Remote Stand Operations. Please follow all directional signage to the new McDonald Road, located east of North Service Place. • The curbside enhancement project, which includes work to the sidewalk along the airport’s
Zurich
Departures level, is continuing. There are several construction zones set up along the Departures level that impact sidewalk and curb access. • Construction has begun on the North Runway End Safety Area (RESA). All YVR’s runways will have 300-metre RESAs, double the recommended Canadian standard. RESAs protect the travelling public in the unlikely event of an aircraft overrun or undershoot. This construction is expected to be completed in November and will include night-time work.
Construction Update
YVR is doing its best to minimize impact to its neighbours in Richmond, Vancouver’s south slope and Burkeville and encourages anyone who has more questions about construction to visit yvr.ca/construction or to email RESAinfo@yvr.ca. • Preparation work is underway as utilities are being relocated as part of the above-mentioned North Runway RESA project. Equipment and material will be visible from Ferguson Road. For more information on all these projects, please visit yvr.ca/ construction.

These new routes are in addition to a slew of expanded air services Air Canada has introduced at YVR in the last year. This includes new flights to Denver, Dallas, Boston, Melbourne, Taipei, Nagoya, Frankfurt, Yellowknife, Orlando and Sacramento. The airline also expanded service on their pre-existing routes to Delhi, San Diego, Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Jose. For more information on Air Canada flights, visit aircanada.com.

Starting Dec. 30, 2016, Beijing Capital Airlines (BCA) will begin service between Vancouver and Hangzhou, via Qingdao, China. Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “Beijing Capital Airlines is the sixth airline to serve YVR from mainland China—two more than any other airport in North America or Europe. It is a true testament to YVR’s position as a connecting hub to the AsiaPacific region, and to YVR’s competitiveness in attracting new carriers.” The new route between
YVR and Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (HGH) via Qingdao Liuting International Airport (TAO) will be flown on an Airbus 330, with seating for 222 passengers, including 36 in business class and 186 in economy. This flight will depart HGH at 2:15pm, followed by a 6:05am departure from TAO, arriving at YVR at 1:15pm each Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
Cathay adds frequency and new aircraft to YVR-Hong Kong route
Departures from YVR will take place at 4:30pm, arriving at TAO at 7:40pm and then 11:25pm at HGH, both the following day. China and Canada have a long history of cultural and economic links. Hangzhou, located in the central eastern coast of China, is the capital city of Zhejiang province. Hangzhou is a city of more than nine-million people
and is among the seven most ancient cities in China. When the great Italian explorer Marco Polo visited in the 13th century, he declared Hangzhou the “most beautiful and elegant city in the world.” Qingdao, located in northeast China, also has a population of more than nine million people. Vancouver Airport Authority welcomed the recent Sichuan Airlines service change announcement for its flights out of YVR. Sichuan Airlines currently serves YVR three times weekly, operating between Chengdu and Vancouver, via Shenyang, China. Beginning November 1, 2016, Sichuan Airlines will open up a new nonstop destination from YVR to Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport (CGO). The new service to Chengdu via Zhengzhou replaces the airline’s existing flight to Chengdu via Shenyang on Tuesdays and Fridays. The airline’s Sunday
flights remain unchanged and will continue to be flown through Shenyang. “Sichuan Airlines has been a valuable partner since 2012 when it launched its first service between YVR and Mainland China—the airline’s first long-haul destination,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “We commend the airline for its vision in opening up new non-stop service between Vancouver and Zhengzhou and introducing another new destination from YVR.” Sichuan Airlines services out of YVR are operated on Airbus A330 aircraft.

The expansion projects will have significant economic and employment benefits in the region. By the end of 2018, construction activities at YVR will create nearly 2,500 full-time construction jobs on Sea Island and hundreds more off-site. Much of the work will be done in the province, offering a significant number of jobs for British Columbians. YVR’s multi-year expansion plans are made possible by its unique, not-for-profit operating model. We are also working with our retailers to have authentic Musqueam Art and Salish Seas (seafood) products available for purchase throughout the airport. YVR recently celebrated the groundbreaking for our new Parkade and Central Utilities Building, which are part of our 20-year, $9.1-billion initiative to expand and improve the airport [see story on cover page]. At the event, I was very honoured to share the stage with Larry Grant, a Musqueam elder who provided a traditional welcome. Larry’s presence demonstrated incredible progress for YVR and Musqueam, from lengthy negotiations just a few years back to our shared vision of a successful, thriving airport. As we build the future airport, we will work with Musqueam to ensure we remain committed to be a leader in sustainability—a community asset that protects the environment, generates opportunities and breaks new ground in what it means to work together with Indigenous peoples. to say that many of these are moving along nicely. For instance, in 2017 Musqueam received the first revenue sharing installment from YVR, valued at $5.3-million (one per cent of our revenue). Shortly after, we hired Mary Point from Musqueam as the agreement’s relationship manager—a crucial role that ensures we implement the agreement and bridge our cultures. We made great progress in the first year thanks to Mary’s guidance. Together with our airport partners, we filled 25 positions with Musqueam members, with more to come. We provided eight scholarships to Musqueam people and we launched an apprenticeship program for Musqueam members. We also looked at ways we can empower Musqueam organizations and work together to improve our sustainability practices. For instance, Musqueam Fisheries and YVR’s Environment team are now working together to manage invasive plant species and improve Sea Island habitat. And that’s just the first year. We will continue to deliver and evolve these initiatives, while launching new programs and projects under the agreement. For the second year, we are

Canada’s National Indigenous Peoples Day [designated June 21] is a time where we celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding achievements of our nation’s Aboriginal peoples. For YVR, this day was an opportunity to not only celebrate the diverse communities we serve, but also marked the oneyear anniversary of our historic, 30-year Musqueam Indian Band – YVR Airport Sustainability & Friendship Agreement. At this time last year, I sat down with Chief Wayne Sparrow and signed a document that represented a big step forward for our airport and the Musqueam people. It was the culmination of decades of collaboration and a year of negotiating, where YVR and Musqueam leaders came together and worked toward a common goal of improving our airport for everyone. We sought to strike a balance between the needs of the airport and the needs of Musqueam and what we got, incredibly, was a new way forward that will change us both. The agreement contains a range of benefits for both parties, including Musqueam support for YVR’s long-term development, scholarships and jobs for Musqueam people, as well as revenue-sharing. And I’m happy

measure that prohibits the possession of battery-operated handheld lasers of more than one milliwatt within a prohibited zone. The measure allows Transport Canada and delegated law enforcement to issue fines on the spot to anyone who possesses a hand-held laser outside of a private dwelling without a legitimate purpose, such as for work, school or education purposes. The maximum fines are $5,000 for an individual and $25,000 for a corporation. The hand-held laser prohibition applies to: • municipalities within the Vancouver, Toronto and greater Montreal regions. • a 10-kilometre radius around any airport or certified heliport across Canada. In 2017, Transport Canada received 379 reports of laser attacks in Canadian airspace. From January 1 to April 30, 2018, there were 63 reported laser attacks. Shining a laser into the cockpit of an aircraft can distract the pilot during the most critical phases of take-off, descent and landing and interfere with their ability to land safely. Anyone convicted of doing this intentionally could also face up to $100,000 in fines, five years in prison or both. “I take very seriously the increased risk to aviation safety and to people on the ground caused by lasers,” said Transport Minister Marc Garneau. “That is why I am proceeding with these new safety measures which take effect immediately—to enhance the safety of aviation and the public while we work to bring into force permanent regulations.” To learn more about the new safety measures as well as the dangers and consequences of laser attacks, visit Canada.ca/ Not-A-Bright-Idea.

Chester Johnson Park totem poles undergo restoration work For many visitors, YVR’s art and architecture, reflective of the province’s diverse landscape and people, provides the first and last impression of British Columbia. The airport’s award-winning “Sense of Place” thematic art and architecture draws on the themes of land, sea and sky. As part of YVR’s celebrated art collection, there are three totem poles carved by celebrated Gitxsan carvers, Walter Harris and Earl Muldon (Muldoe). Standing at more than 10-metres tall, the totem poles were previously located across from International Arrivals at the entrance to Chester Johnson Park.
Given the current construction taking place at the terminal, the three totem poles were recently relocated. They will be kept at an offsite City of Vancouver storage facility where conservation treatments will be performed. The totem poles will be re-installed once construction in the same area is completed. This conservation and restoration project is an effort coordinated by YVR’s art program in consultation with the Museum of Vancouver, Andrew Todd Conservators Ltd., YVR Engineering, Protech Industrial Movers Ltd. and various other partners.
Carved by celebrated Gitxsan carvers, these totem poles will be re-installed at the entrance to Chester Johnson Park on Sea Island once their conservation treatments are completed.

Air Transat to lease seven new Airbus A321neos
When the Airbus A321neo LR aircraft joins Air Transat’s fleet in 2019, the airline will be the first North American operator of the longest-range single-aisle aircraft in the world.
Air Transat has signed an agreement with AerCap for the long-term lease of seven new Airbus aircraft: two A321neos and five A321neo LRs
(long-range). These next-generation, single-aisle jets will be delivered between 2020 and 2022 and will replace the airline’s wide-body
A330s, whose leases will expire during this period. “We are continuing our fleet transformation in order to achieve greater efficiency and

versatility,” said Jean-François Lemay, president of Air Transat. “With their smaller size, the A321neos will enable us to implement our air strategy, which involves increasing our flight frequencies, expanding our network and strengthening our position in several markets. The goal: continue to provide our customers with comfortable service at the best possible price.” With 199 seats in a two-class configuration, the A321neo will be used for feeder flights and
service to the South (short- and medium-haul), while the longrange version (A321neo LR) will be deployed for Sun and transatlantic destinations (medium- and long-haul). While this type of aircraft has been selected to optimize the airline’s fleet, its fuel efficiency will also keep cost per seat as low as possible, while reducing its carbon footprint. Additionally, because of the cockpit commonality of the A330 and A320 (including the A321),
Air Transat’s pilots will be able to fly both types of aircraft, which will result in greater operating flexibility and savings, including on-training costs. Air Transat’s fleet currently consists of 33 permanent aircraft in a flexible-fleet model that allows it to deploy more widebody aircraft in summer for the high transatlantic season and narrow-body aircraft in winter for the high Sun destinations season. By 2024, the airline will have an all-Airbus fleet.

Air Canada’s new uniforms receive recognition for Best Corporate Design Air Canada’s new uniforms, launched earlier this year, were recognized for Best Corporate Design by the U.K.’s Professional Clothing Awards at a ceremony in London. The U.K. Professional Clothing Awards bring together the global professional clothing industry to recognize the international uniform supply chain and reward exceptional workwear, corporate clothing and Personal Protective Equipment. This is the first time a North American company has been recognized in these highly regarded awards and it follows on two Image of the Year Awards the airline received in March from the North American Association of Uniform Manufacturers and Distributors. “This is a very welcome accolade for Air Canada’s new uniform collection, now proudly being worn by our employees,” said Andrew Yiu, vice president, product at Air Canada. “We are delighted their design, which projects Air Canada’s and Canadian values, is clearly making a fashion statement around the world. Winning a European award is gratifying as it further advances our ambition to be a Top 10 global carrier in everything we do. I thank Canadian designer Christopher Bates and Unisync for designing the new uniforms, as well as Air Canada’s employees who are excellent brand ambassadors.”
Designer Christopher Bates has outfitted all of Air Canada’s 28,000 employees in a fully coordinated 150-piece collection that include 100 per cent wool tailored suiting and dresses coloured in black and charcoal.

Travel Talk Top 10 parental fears when travelling with children
British Airways conducted a study that looked at the age at which children take their very first flight. It showed that the average age for a child’s first flight is four years old—three times earlier than their parents. Flying with children so young isn’t always without its turbulence, as one in ten parents admitted to being unprepared for their first flight with their children. One-third confessed to forgetting to take their child’s favourite toys (34 per cent), while one in five (21 per cent) even forgot to pack their child’s medication. A quarter (27 per cent) failed to plan their child’s sleep around the flight times. Other worries parents have when travelling with little ones include children getting lost in the airport, forgetting something important and having to travel with extra bags and buggies. Top 10 biggest fears as a parent when travelling with children: 1. Keeping the kids entertained (42%) 2. Disturbing other passengers (35%) 3. The pressure in the cabin causing them problems (29%)
To make travelling with little ones easier, British Airways has introduced a number of new initiatives at Heathrow airport.
4. The children becoming distressed (29%) 5. Children getting lost/separated in the airport (23%) 6. Forgetting something important (22%) 7. Not being able to settle them/get them to sleep (19%) 8. Travelling with buggies, extra bags, etc. (17%) 9. The airport journey (17%) 10. Other passengers’ reactions to their child’s behaviour (17%) For information on British Airways’ flights from YVR, visit britishairways.com.

Destination BC named Marketer of the Year Destination British Columbia, an industry-led Crown corporation that works collaboratively with tourism partners across the province to coordinate marketing at the international, provincial, regional and local level, has earned the title of Marketer of the Year from the BC Chapter of the American Marketing Association (BCAMA). The organization won out against fierce competition to secure the honour, which rec-

In a compelling video, Destination BC shared game-changing work undertaken daily by each part of the organization, including deep research into key markets and shifting consumer expectations; the Remarkable Experiences Program, a collaborative workshop that helps tourism businesses improve their product experiences while

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) have announced joint efforts to advance the biometric exit mandate at Orlando International Airport (MCO). A biometric entry-exit system based on facial recognition is minimally disruptive to the flow of travel. MCO is the first airport in the United States to commit to processing all arriving and departing international travellers with facial recognition technology. “We are committed to delivering a premiere travel experience to Orlando International Airport’s more than five-million annual international passengers,” said Phil Brown, GOAA CEO. “By incorporating biometric technology into our entry and exit processes, safety, security and speed are optimized so customers can enjoy a more streamlined and comfortable journey through Florida’s busiest airport.” CBP built a facial biomet-

BelugaXL transport aircraft unveils special livery The first Airbus BelugaXL has rolled out of the paint shop, unveiling a special livery that makes it look like a Beluga whale. The livery was one of six choices submitted to Airbus employees through a poll in which 20,000 people participated. With 40 per cent votes in favour, the smiling livery won. The new oversize air transporters are based on the A330-200 Freighter, with a large re-use of existing components and equipment. The decision to build the BelugaXL was taken in November 2014 to address the transport and ramp-up capacity requirements for Airbus beyond 2019. Ground tests will be undertaken before the aircraft’s first flight planned for this summer. Planned service entry for the BelugaXL is 2019.
Airbus’ no. 1 BelugaXL oversize cargo airlifter received its distinctive Beluga whale-inspired livery at the company’s paint shop in Toulouse, France.

Schiphol trials Bitcoin cryptocurrency ATM Passengers at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) can now exchange their leftover euros for Bitcoin or Ethereum at a Bitcoin ATM, which is being trialled at the airport. The six-month trial will explore whether a demand for this service exists among passengers. The maximum amount that each passenger can redeem is limited to 100 euros. “Schiphol is constantly looking for ways to innovate and provide optimum service to passengers,” said Tanja Dik, director of
consumer products and services at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. “With the Bitcoin ATM, we hope to provide a useful service to passengers by allowing them to easily exchange local euros for the global cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin and Ethereum. That can be beneficial if, for instance, it’s not possible to spend euros in their home country.” The trial is the result of cooperation between Schiphol and the Dutch company ByeleX Data Solutions BV, The Byecoin Company.

The opening of the Garden City Lands public trail in Richmond. Photo: courtesy City of Richmond.
A new 2.9-kilometre public trail is now open on the Garden City Lands in Richmond. The multi-use perimeter trail loop is universally accessible for use by both pedestrians and cyclists and will allow users to enjoy the natural beauty of the Garden City Lands. Only the perimeter trail loop—the sections immediately adjacent to Garden City Road, Westminster Highway, No. 4 Road and Alderbridge Way—are intended for public use at this time as work continues to complete the overall Garden City Lands Legacy Landscape Plan. In the interests of safety, a parallel trail network is reserved for use by farm equipment and City vehicles working on the site and the public is requested to remain on the perimeter trail portion. The Garden City Lands are an extraordinary 55.2 hectares of open space located within the Agricultural Land Reserve, in the heart of Richmond, between Westminster Highway, Alderbridge Way, Garden City Way and No. 4 Road. In addition to completing the trails network, the City has also completed sig-
nificant soil and drainage improvements to support planned farming and urban agriculture uses on the site; preserve the environmentally-sensitive bog area in the southeast corner of the site; and manage storm water and groundwater flow throughout the site. More than 700 trees and 50,000 shrubs, all native to the area, have been planted along the perimeter trail to further enhance the site’s natural landscape. Additional landscaping and plantings, drainage management initiatives and environmental monitoring is continuing to support further implantation of the site plan. A portion of the site has also been leased to Kwantlen Polytechnic University for use as part of its Farm School program. The Garden City Lands is designated to remain an important community green space with diverse uses, including urban agriculture, environmental preservation and interpretation, recreational and cultural uses. The project will be completed over several years.
New child care facilities to open in Richmond New child care spaces are coming to Richmond with the opening of the Gardens Children’s Centre, located at 10640 No. 5 Road. The child care facility, which provides 37 spaces of licensed child care for infants, toddlers and children up to five years old is the eighth Cityowned, purpose-built child care facility in Richmond. Townline Homes provided the child care facility as a community amenity contribution to the City as part of ‘The Gardens’ development. This unique facility was built by converting and repurposing ‘The Gardens’ development sales centre and the Coevorden Castle. The castle is a Richmond landmark and a replica of the original Coevorden Castle given by the Netherlands to the City of Vancouver as a centenary gift for Expo 86. It was subsequently moved to Richmond where it was a focal point of Fantasy Gardens, which was located on the site of the new development. The Gardens Children’s Centre will begin operations in September 2018. The City’s eight child care facilities
