Ratings agency Standard & Poor’s recently confirmed its AA long-term issuer credit and senior unsecured debt rating for Vancouver Airport Authority— for the 13th year in a row. The AA rating re-affirms YVR’s position as one of the world’s most financially stable airports, an achievement that stems from the airport’s focus on sustainable growth. “YVR’s strong financial health is testament to the success of Canada’s unique, not-for-profit airport governance model,” said Diana Vuong, YVR’s vice president finance and

chief financial officer. “As a community focused and financially independent organization, YVR

reinvests its financial success back into the airport and the region, driving growth while constantly

improving the airport for everyone.” YVR’s financial strength is based on a diversified revenue

model that focuses on providing unique business solutions while keeping costs low.

A consortium that includes Air Canada, The Toronto-Dominion Bank, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and Visa Canada Corporation have entered into an agreement in principle for the acquisition of Aimia’s Aeroplan loyalty business. Aimia is the data analytics company that manages the Aeroplan loyalty program. The aggregate purchase price for the acquisition of Aimia’s Aeroplan business consists of $450-million in cash and is on a cash-free, debt-free basis and includes the assumption of approximately $1.9 billion of Aeroplan Miles liability.

In July, the same consortium offered $250-million cash plus $2-billion of Aeroplan Miles liability to acquire Aeroplan—an offer that was rejected. The transaction is expected to deliver significant value to Aimia’s stakeholders and the agreement in principle was approved unanimously by Aimia’s Board of Directors upon recommendation by its Special Committee of independent directors. “We are pleased to see that an agreement in principle has been reached as Aeroplan members can continue to earn and redeem with confidence,”

said Calin Rovinescu, president and CEO of Air Canada, on behalf of the consortium. “This transaction, if completed, should produce the best outcome for all stakeholders, including Aeroplan Members, as it would allow for a smooth transition to Air Canada’s new loyalty program launching in 2020, safeguarding their miles and providing convenience and value for millions of Canadians.” The transaction is subject to the satisfactory conclusion of definitive

September YVR construction update Several key projects currently are taking place at YVR to enhance the airport experience. These include the airport’s biggest sustainability projects to date, new parking options, terminal expansions and much more. Some projects that may be seen on Sea Island this month include: • Construction underway to prepare for Phase II of the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport. This phase is scheduled to open in Spring 2019 and will deliver more than 7,800 square metres of additional retail space. BC Hydro is completing utilities work in and around Grant McConachie Way and Templeton Street. Paving on Miller Road as well as bike lane repairs on Grant

McConachie Way have been postponed until September. Once schedules are finalized, more information will be provided. • Various work is continuing in the old Value Lot (adjacent to the Parkade) to prepare for the construction of a new sixstorey parking lot and Central Utilities Building. This work includes traffic control measures around the south west exit and construction of a new toll plaza, which will see the closure of the express pay lanes at the end of the month. • Scheduled maintenance work will be taking place on level 3 of the Parkade. This work will occur in phases during daytime hours and is expected to be complete by early October. • Work is wrapping up on the curbside enhancement

project, which is occurring on the sidewalk along the Departures level. There are construction zones set up along the Departures level

which impact sidewalk and curb access. • Work is underway for an expansion to YVR’s international Pier D. As part of the

project, various work is currently being done behind the hoarding area between gates D58 and D64. While disruption is expected to be mini-

There is clear directional signage to the interim lot. When construction is complete, it will be paved and have WiFi, offering an improved customer experience. • A section of McDonald Road is now closed for construction traffic only. This work is part of the project to extend the east apron for Remote Stand Operations. Please follow all directional signage to the new McDonald Road, located east of North Service Place. • Construction has begun on the North Runway End Safety Area (RESA). All YVR’s runways will have 300-metre RESAs, double the recommended Canadian standards. RESAs protect the travelling public in the unlikely event of an aircraft overrun or undershoot. This construction is expected to be completed in November and will include night-time work. Vancouver Airport Authority is doing its best to minimize impact to the neighbouring members of the Richmond, Vancouver south slope and Burkeville communities and encourages anyone who has more questions about construction to visit yvr.ca or to email RESAinfo@yvr.ca. • Preparation work is underway as utilities are relocated as part of the above-mentioned North Runway RESA project. Equipment and material will be visible from Ferguson Road. For more information, visit yvr.ca/construction.

Credit rating In-terminal banners at YVR explain the airport’s effective and innovative governance model.

It has been an incredible summer for YVR. Along with our airline partners, we have continued the trend of strong growth, with record passenger numbers. We kicked off construction on key projects that will transform the airport. And we provided more air services, connecting people and products to new destinations all over the world. A large part of our ongoing success is the result of an effective and innovative airport governance model. You may have seen some advertising of this model around the airport—on the banners in the international food court, at the Canada Line station and on select displays. Understandably, you may also be wondering what these ads mean. How does an airport, after all, help deliver value for your money? It comes down to who we are. YVR is managed by Vancouver Airport Authority—a private, community-focused and financially independent organization. As a not-for-profit, we receive no money from the government (but we do pay the government annual rent through a Ground Lease agreement).

We also have no shareholders; instead, we are accountable to our communities through a mandate that stipulates we operate a safe, efficient and reliable airport while providing economic and social benefits. And we do this by reinvesting our profits back into the airport. The result is an airport that is a thriving hub. We are a community contributor, providing more than $1-million per year in donations to a range of organizations. We are a jobs creator: more than 24,000 people work at YVR, every day, supporting our operations. And we are an economic generator, contributing more than $16-billion in total economic output every year across B.C.— through our operations, as well as the facilitation of tourism and cargo. Because we are focused on reinvesting our success back into YVR, it constantly improves. We innovate, coming up with effective solutions to everyday challenges in the airport industry. For instance, we invented our BorderXpress kiosks several years ago to reduce lineups at Customs. Since their introduction, we have become a world-leader in

Conquer Cancer In addition to team fundraising efforts, Harbour Air’s support included assistance with ride operations and a new Harbour Air lounge to greet tired riders back to camp with lounge chairs, games and activities. In the months leading up to the ride, Harbour Air team members and employees collected personal donations, hosted charity BBQ events and assisted with securing corporate fundraising. Working towards a total besting the team’s 2017

contribution of $65,000, the Harbour Air riders celebrated breaking the $80,000 milestone mid-way through the ride’s first day. Harbour Air’s Ride to Conquer Cancer team and corporate sponsorship align with the company’s Share the Fare charitable giving program. Introduced in 2017 and raising over $75,000 in its first year, Share the Fare is Harbour Air’s way of giving back to the coastal BC communities that have supported the airline for more than 35 years.

self-serve kiosk technology. We sell these kiosks to airports and sea ports all over the world and we reinvest our profits back into developing further solutions such as the CheckitXpress self-bag drop, which we recently unveiled at YVR. And there’s much more. We recently kicked off a $9.1-billion, 20-year expansion program that includes a wide range of projects—from a new Parkade to a terminal expansion. The building of these many projects provides good-paying local jobs, with up to 2,500 people working at YVR in construction alone by the end of 2018. And we recently partnered with Musqueam Indian Band, through a 30-year agreement that ensures we will work together to make YVR a leader in sustainability. So, every time you travel through YVR, your money goes further. It goes back into the community, through donations to many worthwhile causes. It supports our expansion, improving the airport for everyone while creating jobs at the airport and around the province. And it helps us continue to connect B.C. proudly to the world—something we can all get behind.

For each passenger travelling on a “Share the Fare Friday,” Harbour Air automatically makes a $1 donation. Passengers also can make their own contributions on any flight, any day. Share the Fare proceeds are divided evenly between three local charity partners: Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, the BC Cancer Foundation and the Boys & Girls Club of South Coast BC. For information on Harbour Air’s flights from YVR, visit harbourair.com.

from page 1

Almost half of YVR’s revenue comes from non-aeronautical sources, including YVR’s awardwinning BorderXpress kiosks, dutyfree sales, concessions, land and terminal rents, parking and more. Vancouver Airport Authority reinvests all profits back into the airport, which has allowed YVR to maintain the lowest Airport Improvement Fee (AIF) of all major Canadian airports. In addition, YVR has the lowest airline rates and charges of all major airports in Canada and competing U.S. airports. As a world-class hub, YVR plays a significant role in driving economic benefits across British Columbia—facilitating $16.5-billion in total economic output, $8.4-billion in total GDP and $1.4-billion in total government revenue. YVR’s operations generate more than 24,000 jobs at the

airport and, together with tourism and cargo, the airport supports more than 100,000 jobs across B.C. YVR has entered a period of significant growth, which will further contribute to the economy. The airport recently announced the commencement of a $9.1-billion expansion plan, which includes 75 projects over 20 years. Work has already started on key projects, including a new Parkade, a Central Utilities Building and an international terminal expansion. By the end of 2018, construction activities at YVR will create nearly 2,500 fulltime construction jobs on Sea Island and hundreds more offsite. Much of the work will be done in the province, offering a significant number of jobs for British Columbians.

Air Canada Cargo receives IATA certification for animal transport

Air Canada Cargo has become the first airline to receive a new global certification for the safe transport of live animals. This certification reinforces that Air Canada Cargo is operating to the highest standards in the transport of live animals, be it exotic species or household pets. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) awarded Air Canada Cargo with the Center of Excellence for Independent Validators for Live Animals Logistics (CEIV Live Animals) Certification, following successful completion of the verification process in its

Montreal facility. IATA launched the new standardized global certification program earlier this year to improve and reinforce the safety and welfare of animals travelling by air. Air Canada Cargo was chosen to undergo a pilot for the program and over several months from January to July, as part of a thorough audit, IATA’s specialists reviewed Air Canada Cargo’s live animal transport policies and procedures in its Montreal facility. Compliance with Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) was fully reviewed as was compliance with protocols like the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

Alaska Airlines partners with NASA for more real time efficient routes Alaska Airlines is partnering with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to invest in aircraft technology that can select optimal flight routes in real time. The software called TAP, or Traffic Aware Planner, is part of NASA’s Traffic Aware Strategic Aircrew Requests (TASAR) program. TAP automatically monitors for potential flight trajectory improvements while in the air, passes that information on to pilots and helps them to get permission to make the changes. In addition to getting passengers to their destination faster, NASA estimates between 30,000 to 45,000 litres of fuel could be saved annually per Alaska Airlines aircraft, along with 900 to 1,300 fewer minutes flying each plane.

NASA’s Traffic Aware Planner (TAP) software gets tested on the flight deck. Photo: Ingrid Barrentine, courtesy Alaska Airlines.

“TASAR’s mission is simple: Give pilots recommended flight paths and changes in altitude that air traffic controllers are more likely to approve,” said David Wing, who leads the TASAR project for NASA. “TASAR allows more efficient flying without adding more work for those on the flight deck or those in the

control center.” The software is undergoing trials on three Alaska Airlines’ Boeing 737-900ERs aircraft with “promising” results. Operational evaluation of the system on Alaska Airlines flights began in July 2018 and is expected to last until September 2020.

Innovative new landing gear in Boeing’s 737 MAX 10 Production of components for the very first Boeing 737 MAX 10 airplane is underway, thanks to a new, innovative solution for the airplane’s main landing gear. From an engineering standpoint, this new airplane will be a straightforward stretch of the MAX 9, which entered service in 2018. More than 95 per cent of the design and 90 per cent of the build of the MAX 10 will be identical to previous models.

The primary difference in the MAX 10 compared to other models is in the new, levered design of the main landing gear. What makes this landing gear so unique? There are two key features that are critical for the longer design of the MAX 10. One is a lever that allows the landing gear to grow taller upon takeoff, the other a shrinking mechanism that helps the gear retract to fit into the existing wheel well. Last summer, at the Paris Air

Show, Boeing announced the launch of the MAX 10. Since then, interest in the airplane has grown, with more than 20 customers from around the globe placing orders and commitments for this new member of the 737 family. With additional capacity for up to 230 passengers, combined with greater overall efficiency, the MAX 10 is expected to set a new benchmark for profitability in the single-aisle market when deliveries begin in 2020.

Escape to New Zealand and go ‘forest bathing’ to unwind

Awaroa Lodge

Modern life means being connected constantly, either on a phone, on a computer or multitasking a whole host of matters. Research has shown that spending time in a wooded area within nature, also known as ‘forest bathing’, is beneficial for the body, mind and spirit, restoring the physical, mental and emotional self. It has also shown to decrease blood pressure levels, increase a sense of self-awareness and relaxation peaks to a higher level. With its vast landscapes, distinct biodiversity and sharp mountain peaks, New Zealand provides the precise starting point for ‘disconnecting’ and getting back to nature. Following are five unplugged escapes in New Zealand’s South Island that are designed to refresh, renew and revitalize guests. Awaroa Lodge Nestled in the heart of the Abel Tasman National Park it is not accessible by road. Get there via water taxi to a part of the Abel Tasman Coast Track before walking a short distance to the lodge. There are no televisions or mobile phone signals and guests are encouraged to get closer to nature. Their minimally designed rooms are set amongst lush trees, some overlooking native bush and wetland views. Enjoy walks by the beach, guided sea kayaking, or take flight in a small plane to see spectacular aerial views of the coastline and park. awaroalodge.co.nz Furneaux Lodge Furneaux Lodge is so sheltered that it is only accessible by boat, even the locals get their groceries and mail brought in by boat once a week. It is situated at the foot of Mount Furneaux and is surrounded by more than 800 hectares of forest deep in the Marlborough Sounds. The native bush nearby is renowned for some of the best flora and fauna found in New Zealand. Apart from the restaurant at the lodge, there are no other restaurants or shops around for urban necessities. Sit back and relax at the lodge or bask in pure nature. Inhale the scent of native flowers in the air on an early morning stroll through the beautiful Waterfall Walk, or explore the

Furneaux Lodge

Milford Sound Lodge The Milford Sound Lodge is the only accommodation site to stay at in Milford Sound. It is a 30 to 35-minute walk from the closest boat terminal therefore its privacy is one of its big appeals. The beautiful riverside chalets sit on the banks of the Cleddau River and have been designed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding native beech forest and views. Wake up in the morning and take a moment to listen to the sweet secluded sound of nature and breathe in the fresh mountain air. You can also go kayaking beyond Stirling Falls, explore the neighbouring hiking tracks or go trout fishing at the nearby lakes. milfordlodge.com Martins Bay Lodge When it comes to the Martins Bay Lodge, exclusivity and inaccessibility go hand in hand. It is not accessible by road, instead expect to arrive at the lodge by helicopter, only one of two ways to gain access. Likewise, expect to leave the lodge in a similar fashion. However, the only difference is that guests take a jetboat water taxi part way down Lake McKerrow before walking back to the lodge to make a grand exit via helicopter. The lodge is located within a natural clearing and surrounded by wild growths of flax grass and gorse. Expect a warm welcome and to be treated like long-lost friends by the lodge hosts as they prepare three-course dinners daily for guests. Take a walk to Long Reef Point to look at the nearby colony of New Zealand fur seals or simply unwind with a glass of wine by the panoramic windows. hollyfordtrack.com Camp Glenorchy Although not set in the middle of a forest, Camp Glenorchy offers a unique take on ‘disconnecting’. JAL prepares for the future with supersonic aircraft and innovation lab

Japan Airlines has invested $10-million in the Boom supersonic project and has the option to purchase up to 20 of the future aircraft. Photo: courtesy Future Travel Experience.

Japan Airlines (JAL) has been busy looking to the future. In December 2017, the airline announced a strategic partnership with Boom Supersonic, before revealing in May this year that it has created the JAL Innovation Lab. In the same month, JAL also announced its intention to launch a new lowcost carrier ahead of the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020. JAL has invested $10-million in the Boom project and has the option to purchase up to 20 of the future supersonic aircraft. It plans to offer its know-how in the design phase. “As a premium full-service

carrier, with extensive worldwide operations, we have ample experience when it comes to onboard passenger experience, which we hope will contribute to the design process,” said Akira Mitsumasu, vice president products & services planning division. “Today, with smart computers, computational fluid dynamics, carbon fibre composite material and modern engine technology, it is possible—unlike the days of the highly uneconomic Concorde— to produce a supersonic aircraft that is economic, by combining existing certified technology in service and speed.

“Our new supersonic aircraft will fly at 60,000 feet, the same as Concorde, where through our large windows, you can actually see the curvature of the Earth. The sky is a deeper blue, and the air is much thinner and therefore there is much less turbulence. With regards to inflight entertainment and connectivity, we will look into using the latest technologies available to ensure an enjoyable personalised onboard experience.” While it waits to send its customers faster than the speed of sound, JAL plans to quicken the pace of development in other areas of the passenger experi-

ence, having established the JAL Innovation Lab earlier this year. “We want to utilize the many ideas generated from our customers and employees to create new ways of solving problems and to design alternative ways of better serving our customers,” said Mitsumasu. “Through partnerships with companies and startups, we are beginning to create prototypes using artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things and 3D printing technologies. Connectivity will increase the number of things that can be done onboard the aircraft, hence it will also be possible for airlines to propose and deliver new

value offerings, or perhaps even quite dramatically change the onboard experience. Imagine for example, if you could see from your aircraft window sceneries of all the streets and cities the aircraft is flying past, quite like that of riding on a train or a car, wouldn’t that be wonderful?” Technological advances aren’t the only strategic focus for JAL’s future onboard product, with a new airline subsidiary also in the planning ahead of the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. “In addition to JAL and our short-haul joint venture Jetstar Japan, we thought we also needed a medium-to-long haul

LCC in our portfolio to meet the diverse needs of our customers, whilst at the same time generating new travel demand,” said Mitsumasu. “We also want to support Japan’s goal to receive over 60-million foreign visitors by 2030. We will be investing in many areas, from airport counter refurbishment to enhanced IT service improvements, as well as a barrier-free mobility environment. Japan experienced a period of miraculous economic growth after the 1964 Games and we hope that with the 2020 Games, we will work towards building a better future for all.”

Construction will begin this fall on River Parkway, an important new transportation link that will transform traffic flow within Richmond’s City Centre. Construction will begin later this fall and completion is anticipated for early 2020. “The opening of River Parkway will provide a huge improvement to traffic flow throughout north Richmond,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “It will provide a great new option for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians travelling to and through the City Centre. It will also facilitate eventual development of the new Lulu Island Park, a major new 37-acre waterfront park along the Middle Arm that will serve residents, workers and tourists within the City Centre.” The project entails further northward extension of River Parkway from Gilbert Road, along the former railway corridor to Cambie Road near No. 3 Road. The estimated cost of the overall River Parkway project is $13.2-million with secured funding from TransLink of about $2.55-million towards the cycling and pedestrian components of the overall project. Funding for the balance

of the project is sourced from Roads Development Cost Charges (DCCs). An initial section of River Parkway has already been constructed in association with new development in the area. Extending River Parkway will: • enhance traffic operations of the existing River Road-Gilbert Road intersection; • improve overall traffic circulation in the City Centre; • facilitate the development of Lulu Island Park as well as access improvement for abutting properties; • advance the completion of the north loop road as part of the ultimate City Centre road network; and • support the City’s commitment to reduce vehicle trips and encourage alternative modes of transportation by improving cycling and pedestrian infrastructure along the corridor. Once River Parkway is complete, an existing section of River Road running from Gilbert Road to Cambie Road will eventually be closed to allow for the development of the 37-acre Lulu Island Park.City of Richmond.

Vancouver’s Electra Meccanica collaborates with 7-Eleven Canada Electra Meccanica, a Vancouver designer and manufacturer of electric vehicles, will work with 7-Eleven, the world’s largest convenience retailer, to take to the streets of Vancouver, with two of its all-electric, singlepassenger SOLOs. The new-to-market, threewheel electric vehicles will be used to promote 7-Eleven’s delivery service. “7-Eleven has more than 600 stores in Canada and more than 66,000 stores in 17 countries,” said Jerry Kroll, chairman and CEO of Electra Meccanica. “The brand is widely recognized as an

innovative leader in convenience retailing and as the convenient solution for people on the go. Coincidently, so is the SOLO. At Electra Meccanica, we share the same values, and collaborating with 7-Eleven Canada makes perfect sense as our customer bases are very much alike. Being associated with a brand that is so embedded in today’s culture and synonymous with quality, ease and enjoyment-- all in the name of serving its customers -- is a perfect way to demonstrate what we do well.” Intermeccanica, a subsidiary of Electra Meccanica, has

been building high-end specialty cars for 59 years. The Electra Meccanica family aims to deliver next-generation affordable electric vehicles to the masses. “Not only do these vehicles put our brand on the road in a fun, attention-getting package, they allow us to explore alternate transportation options to reduce our carbon footprint, minimize environmental impacts, and gain cost efficiencies that we can share with our customers,” said Doug Rosencrans, vice president and general manager, 7-Eleven Canada.

Volvo – reimagining the work-life balance and the future of cities

Where would you live if you could commute each workday in an autonomous driving, fullyfunctional, connected, comfortable, mobile office space? What if the service was provided via an on-demand subscription basis? Or what if it was provided by one employer yet not another—at which company would you choose to work? This is a mere glimpse of a myriad of scenarios and questions raised by Volvo Cars’ new Volvo 360c concept, revealed as part of the company’s vision for the future of travel—autonomous, electric, connected and safe—and which may allow Volvo Cars to enter new growth markets. The concept environments reflect the potential for change in the fundamental structure of how people live, by transforming unproductive or boring travel time into useful and enjoyable minutes or hours on the road. “The 360c explores what becomes possible when we remove the human driver, using new freedoms in design and recapturing time, it’s a glimpse at how autonomous drive technology will change the world as we know it,” said Mårten Levenstam, senior vice president of corporate strategy at Volvo Cars. “The possibilities are mind-boggling.” Fully autonomous and electric travel offers a range of advanced safety and environmental benefits, such as less pollution, less traffic congestion, and related health and lifestyle advantages for those living in cities. One example of this is the 360c’s potential as a lucrative competitor to short-haul air travel, a multi-billion-dollar industry comprising airlines, aircraft makers and other service providers. The 360c sleeping environment enables first-class private cabin travel from door to door, without the inconvenience of airport security, queuing and airliners. “We regard the 360c as a conversation starter, with more ideas and answers to come as we learn more,” said Levenstam. “Yet we believe fully autono-
