Upgraded bridges and roads on Sea Island, new taxiways to improve aircraft movement and one of the largest GeoExchange energy systems in Canada are just some of the exciting enhancements outlined in the YVR 2037 Master Plan. Approved by the federal Transport Minister Marc Garneau earlier this year, the Master Plan will guide land use decision-making and facility development at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) over the next 20 years. The YVR 2037 Master Plan is now available to the public in both official languages. “On behalf of YVR, I
would like to thank our community: our neighbours, employees, travellers, business partners and our valued stakeholders who contributed their ideas during this process,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “YVR 2037 was founded on British Columbians’ expectations of a world-class airport that is safe and secure—one that instills pride, brings economic benefits to British Columbia and Canada and respects local communities and the environment. We will continue to engage with our communities and stakeholders as future area
planning and development opportunities arise.” YVR embarked on the multi-phase consultation process in 2015 and used a variety of tools and methods to gather information and facilitate meaningful dialogue with business partners, employees, travellers and local communities. Community and stakeholder feedback helped shape future enhancements in six key areas: ground access, environment, community amenities, airside and airspace, terminals and land use. Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and Japan Airlines (JAL) recently celebrated 50 years of service between Vancouver and Tokyo. The occasion was commemorated with a special ceremony to mark this unique and important connection
between Canada and Japan. With YVR’s president and CEO Craig Richmond and JAL senior vice president of the Americas Kiyoto Morioka on hand, a special gate event was held on September 10, which featured a ceremonial ribbon
cutting, a showcase of historic JAL artifacts and, of course, lots of cake. Additionally, YVR also gave away a pair of tickets from Vancouver to anywhere JAL flies in Japan. See JAL 50 YEARS page 2

Iskwew Air CEO Teara Fraser heads Canada’s first Indigenous, woman-owned airline, which will begin charter services in March 2019, with a vision to provide scheduled service to remote communities across the province in the future.
On September 21, YVR welcomed Iskwew Air (pronounced “Iss-Kway-yo”) Canada’s first Indigenous, woman-owned airline. Iskwew—the Cree word for woman—celebrates the reclamation of womanhood, matriarchal leadership and language. The welcome event, which took place at YVR’s South Terminal, featured a blessing from elders of Musqueam Indian Band, on whose territory YVR resides, along with comments from Iskwew Air CEO Teara Fraser and YVR South Terminal superintendent John
Buckle. Fraser, 47, a Metis whose family is from Chipewyan, Alberta, has been a pilot for 15 years, previously flying to towns such as Masset and Prince Rupert for Hawkair, a Terrace-based regional airline. Starting in March 2019, Iskwew Air will be operating charter service out of YVR’s South Terminal and will also provide short-haul flights to specific destinations. Committed to supporting women in management, YVR is looking forward to partnering with Iskwew Air and sharing in its success.

October YVR construction update
Community
YVR has come a long way since its humble beginning as a small administration building with one runway in 1931. The airport is now the largest building in B.C. and the second busiest airport in Canada.
Several key projects to enhance the airport experience are currently taking place at YVR. These include the airport’s biggest sustainability projects to date, new parking options, terminal expansions and much more. Some projects that may be seen on Sea Island this month: • Various work continuing in the old Value Lot (adjacent to the Parkade) to prepare for the construction of a new sixstorey parking lot and Central Utilities Building. This work includes traffic control measures around the south-west
exit and construction of a new toll plaza, which included the closure of the current express pay lanes on September 24. This also impacts the crosswalk in the vicinity leading to/from the Parkade (level P1), which will no longer be in use. Please follow all directional signage in the area. • Scheduled maintenance work will be taking place on level 3 of the Parkade. This work will occur in phases during daytime hours and is expected to be complete by early October. • Construction is underway
to prepare for Phase II of the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport. This phase is scheduled to open in Spring 2019 and will deliver more than 7,800 square metres of additional retail space. • There will be various improvements to a section of Pier B, domestic terminal. As part of this work, there will be hoarding and phased closures of two passenger hold rooms. Work is anticipated to be complete by June 2019. • Starting mid-September,

construction will begin in an enclosed area between the international and domestic terminal. Construction will take approximately two weeks to complete and there may be intermittent noise. This work is being done to create a temporary baggage system for the airport’s partners and is expected to be in place until July 2019. • As part of the International Pier D expansion project, various work is currently being done behind the hoarding area between gates D58 and D64. While disruption is expected to be minimal, there may be intermittent noise in this area. • There will be various other hoarding around the terminal for upgrades. • As part of the jetSet Parking
lot reconfiguration project, the cell phone lot has been temporarily relocated. There is clear directional signage to the interim lot. When construction is complete the lot will be paved and have WiFi service, offering an improved customer experience. • A section of McDonald Road is now closed for construction traffic only. This work is part of the project to extend the east apron for Remote Stand Operations. Please follow all directional signage to the new McDonald Road, located east of North Service Place. • There is construction on the North Runway End Safety Area (RESA). All YVR’s runways will have 300-metre RESAs, double the recommended Canadian standards. RESAs protect the travelling
public in the unlikely event of an aircraft overrun or undershoot. This construction is expected to be completed in November and will include night-time work. YVR is doing its best to minimize impact to the neighbouring members of the Richmond, Vancouver south slope and Burkeville communities and encourages anyone who has more questions about construction to visit yvr.ca or to email RESAinfo@yvr.ca. • Preparation work is underway as we relocate utilities as part of the above mentioned North Runway RESA project. Equipment and material will be visible from Ferguson Road. For more information on these projects, visit yvr.ca/construction.

A consortium that includes Air Canada, The Toronto-Dominion Bank, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and Visa Canada Corporation have entered into an agreement in principle for the acquisition of Aimia’s Aeroplan loyalty business. Aimia is the data analytics company that manages the Aeroplan loyalty program. The aggregate purchase price for the acquisition of Aimia’s Aeroplan business consists of $450-million in cash and is on a cash-free, debt-free basis and includes the assumption of approximately $1.9 billion of Aeroplan Miles liability.
In July, the same consortium offered $250-million cash plus $2-billion of Aeroplan Miles liability to acquire Aeroplan—an offer that was rejected. The transaction is expected to deliver significant value to Aimia’s stakeholders and the agreement in principle was approved unanimously by Aimia’s Board of Directors upon recommendation by its Special Committee of independent directors. “We are pleased to see that an agreement in principle has been reached as Aeroplan members can continue to earn and redeem with confidence,”
said Calin Rovinescu, president and CEO of Air Canada, on behalf of the consortium. “This transaction, if completed, should produce the best outcome for all stakeholders, including Aeroplan Members, as it would allow for a smooth transition to Air Canada’s new loyalty program launching in 2020, safeguarding their miles and providing convenience and value for millions of Canadians.” The transaction is subject to the satisfactory conclusion of definitive

C A R T O O N:
Wherever water meets land—the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup provides Canadians of all ages with the opportunity to make a different in their communities, collecting and disposing of one bit of trash at a time.
Last month, the YVR community was proud to be a part of International Coastal Cleanup Day. This special event was a collaborative conservation effort with Ocean Wise, an initiative of the Vancouver Aquarium and World Wildlife Fund Canada (WWF). Despite occurring on a very rainy Saturday afternoon, coastal cleanup volunteers, including Catherine McKenna Minister of Environment and Climate Change, were not deterred. More than 300 people came out to Iona Beach Regional Park, located just north of YVR, to help take care of the local coastline, one piece of trash at a time. Participants stayed warm with free coffee, hot chocolate and a live DJ, whose musical selections kept spirits high as cleanup volunteers collected and properly disposed of more than 200 kilograms of trash. Coffee
cups, cigarette butts and even an old sneaker were just some of the many objects that were collected. At the end of the afternoon, all volunteers had the opportunity to win two free flights from YVR to anywhere Air Canada flies within Canada. What better way to appreciate the efforts of keeping our planet clean than to travel out there and see it? A special thank-you to all volunteers who participated in this year’s Shoreline Cleanup, including Parks Canada, Metro
Vancouver, Ocean Wise and WWF for helping make this event possible. The Iona Beach Regional Park cleanup was one of 1,801 coastal cleanups that have collected close to 61,000 kilograms of litter from more than 2,700 kilometres of shoreline across Canada this year. For more information on the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup and how you can become involved, visit shorelinecleanup.ca.
Master Plan Continued from page 1
As outlined in the 2037 Master Plan, YVR will work with government and regional partners to improve transportation options to and from the airport. YVR will also explore the possibility of a new runway to welcome and connect more passengers and planes from around the world. Growth and expansion will be safely and sustainably managed, while providing continued economic well-being to the region, support for the community and protection for the environment. Sea Island’s ecology will be respected, with plans for water quality monitoring and reduced
greenhouse gas emissions, water use and waste. Green space and other amenities will be incorporated into YVR’s development projects wherever possible and the implementation of the 2037 Master Plan will be consistent with the obligations in the 30-year Musqueam Indian Band—YVR Airport Sustainability & Friendship Agreement, which was signed in June 2017. To learn more about the multi-phase consultation process and to read the YVR 2037 Master Plan, please visit yvr.ca/ yvr2037.

Richly symbolic to Japanese culture and tradition, cherry blossoms were on display at JAL and YVR’s 50th anniversary celebration.
At the end of the ceremony, JAL Flight 18 was sent off in style with lots of waves and smiles to go around. Japan Airlines began flying its Vancouver-Tokyo route in September 1968. As the first Asian carrier to serve Vancouver, YVR was pleased to partner with an
incredible airline that is renowned around the world. This connection goes far beyond just a flight, it is a symbol of many years of friendship and a signifier of the important social, cultural and economic ties between Canada and Japan. Consistently providing top
notch service to its passengers, not only at YVR but all around the world, JAL recently achieved a 5-star rating from Skytrax, the global benchmark of airline excellence. As YVR continues to grow, YVR looks forward to its continued partnership with JAL in the many years to come.

On Approach with YVR’s Brent Bell Brent Bell is a YVR legend. As manager of the air traffic control tower for NAV Canada, the not-for-profit corporation that owns and operates Canada’s civil air navigation system, Bell has kept the airport community safe for a long time. He recently hung up his radio for the sunnier skies of retirement and before leaving, we checked in with him to learn more about his time at YVR and the fascinating world of air traffic control. How did you get in to the aviation business?
I worked as an aircraft refueller for Seahurst aviation at the South terminal. It was there I got the bug for flying and began taking lessons at one of the local flying schools. I completed my commercial pilot license and flew in the bush flying float planes out of Lynn Lake, Manitoba and Red Lake, Ontario. When I graduated from UBC, I needed a job and my friend’s father brought me an application form for ATC [air traffic control]. From the day I made the application, I never looked back. In recent years,
I have had the chance to fly with Harbour Air and Seair on a weekly basis. I know most of the pilots, so I usually sit up front for a chat and a bird’s-eye view of the service our controllers are providing. It’s a proud feeling to listen and watch this truly unique ATC operation from cockpit. What was your career path leading up to managing the tower at YVR? My first year was at Kamloops tower and in the fall of 1985. I was lucky to get the last seat for training at YVR
Community
YVR’s air traffic control manager since 2007, Brent Bell takes a well-earned pre-retirement airside leap. Bell leaves YVR with an enviable safety record that is amongst the best in Canada and the world.
control tower. I spent two-anda-half years at the tower and then moved to the radar center where I spent a couple years as a terminal controller. Following this, I worked as a YVR tower supervisor until 2006. My first management posting was to Victoria tower and following a seven-month position there, I became the manager at YVR tower. Shortly after becoming the manager of YVR tower my duties were expanded to manage other operations including Abbotsford, Vancouver Harbour, Victoria Harbour and Nanaimo (thankfully not all at the same time). Can you remember your first day at YVR? What was that like? It was incredibly exciting and terrifying at the same time. Exciting, because this was the big leagues and all the airplanes were here. Terrifying, because there was so much to learn. At the end of my first shift at about 10pm, my instructor let me into the runway control position. It was called the “corner” because in those days the tower cab was square, and we would sit in one of the corners for the best view of the runways. It was the first time I had worked at a radar scope. What are some of the biggest differences between YVR and the aviation industry from 35 years ago to today?
Now Hiring
I’m happy to say the operation is more structured than it used to be. In the ‘80s and ‘90s there were so many small airplanes, with student pilots sharing the airspace with sophisticated airline operations. Our radar scopes were analog, so we had to remember which flight number belonged to each blip. When it was foggy, we would role a marine radar into the centre of the room and the controllers would take turns looking through a shroud to see the targets. It was challenging, to say the least. Times have changed, though, and our new technology is the best in the world. The parallel runway is a blessing that has vastly reduced the complexity of the operation. Most notably, there are more airplanes and they are massive by comparison. What is your fondest memory of YVR? So many things—Expo 86; 2010 Winter Olympics; the Concorde; A380; Antonovs; F18s, all flying side by side; to the vintage Beavers and Otters on the river. I am immensely proud of the safety record of YVR airport. This was a team effort involving NAV Canada and YVR. Most memorable day was when I pushed the crash alarm to assist the DC-10 that had announced it was rejecting takeoff. It seemed like things were happening in slow motion and
perhaps the alarm had not been received by the fire hall. It turns out that was just my sense of time in an emergency. The reality was the firehall was responding before the aircraft had even left the runway. Most emotional day was 9/11—nothing was flying, and nothing was moving on the ground. It was a very somber day and it just felt wrong. What was it about the job that kept you coming back? Aviation is an alluring business. It is state-of-the-art and always moving forward. What do you foresee for the future of aviation? Aviation will become even safer. The airplanes will be more efficient. The technology will evolve to the point that we will see pilotless aircraft and towers without controllers. What are you going to do now? I’m going to play more golf with friends and spend more time with my best friend—Heather. What will you miss most about coming to work? I will miss the great friends and colleagues at YVR and their can-do spirit. I will miss the view! The view from YVR tower is absolutely stunning. Watching the sun rise over Mount Baker and set over Vancouver Island is special every time. I will miss watching the big ones take off. After all these years, it’s still a marvel of engineering.

Cathay Pacific, Boeing donate world’s first 777 to aviation museum Cathay Pacific and Boeing have donated the first-ever Boeing 777 airplane to the Pima Air & Space Museum in Arizona, one of the world’s largest facilities devoted to celebrating aerospace. The iconic 777-200 airplane (line number WA001 and registered B-HNL) flew from Cathay Pacific’s home airport in Hong Kong to Tucson, Arizona last month. The jet will be displayed permanently at the museum along-
side more than 350 other historic aircraft. Boeing first flew the 777200 aircraft on June 12, 1994 and continued to use it as a test airplane for several years. The aircraft joined the Cathay Pacific fleet in 2000 and was retired in May after 18 years of service. During its time with Cathay Pacific, B-HNL operated 20,519 flights, recording 49,687 hours of flying time. In the 1990s, Cathay Pacific was one of a handful of airlines
to provide input for the 777 at the design stage, which gave Hong Kong’s home airline a unique opportunity to refine the aircraft’s features to suit its needs. Among the requests were a cabin cross-section like the 747 Jumbo Jet, a modern ‘glass’ cockpit, fly-by-wire system and, crucially, lower operating costs. Today, Cathay Pacific operates one of the largest 777 fleets in the world and is a launch customer for Boeing’s new 777X aircraft.

Saving water, one flush at a time Vancouver Airport Authority, the community-based, not-forprofit organization that manages Vancouver International Airport (YVR), strives to be a leader in sustainability and is committed to being a responsible international airport operator. As a part of this sustainability leadership, YVR’s Environmental Management Plan includes reducing Sea Island potable water consumption by 30 per cent by 2020. One of the initiatives to help do so will soon begin, starting with construction within the airport’s in-terminal washrooms. Work will be done to replace and repair faucets, urinals and toilets to reduce potable water use, while meeting U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) WaterSense standards. WaterSense, a voluntary partnership program sponsored by the U.S. EPA, is both a label for water-efficient products and a resource for helping save water. WaterSense-labelled products and services are certified to use at least 20 per cent less water, save energy and perform as well as or better than standard models. Doing what it can to conserve water is nothing new to YVR. Since 2015, the airport has saved approximately 97,000 cubic metres of potable water—the spatial equivalent of nearly 100 Boeing 747 jets. This result has been achieved through the implementation of several conservation initiatives. These include utilizing the rainwater collection system at YVR’s Airside Operations Building (AOB), optimizing the heat exchangers in the International Terminal Building and shutting off select irrigation and water feature systems, periodically, during the summer months. In addition, YVR has been continuing to work with its business partners and tenants by conducting water audits to identify water-saving opportunities in their facilities, as well as upgrading their pre-rinse spray valves
able future for Sea Island. For information on the various construction projects underway at YVR, visit yvr.ca/construction.
Sustainability WaterSense labelled products meet U.S. Environmental Protection Agency specifications for water efficiency and performance and are backed by independent, third-party certification.

Transat has purchased land in Puerto Morelos on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula to build a beachfront resort. Located on the Riviera Maya, the village of Puerto Morelos is midway between Cancún and Playa del Carmen, some 20 kilometres from Cancún International Airport. “We are very pleased with these transactions in a prominent Mexican tourism market,” said Transat president and chief executive officer Jean-Marc
Eustache. “This is just the beginning, we are continuing our exploratory work with the objective of finding attractive land or hotels that we can acquire or manage. Our company’s future growth will be built on hotel development and, obviously, the strength of our leisure travel business.” This is Transat’s first step toward its previously announced goal of having 5,000 owned or managed hotel rooms at its main Sun destinations by 2024.

The airline plans to begin its operations using Airbus A320 aircraft. The A320’s fuel-efficient, narrow-body framework supports a high-density seat configuration, making it the most widely used aircraft for ultralow-cost carriers worldwide. “With the submission of our manuals to Transport Canada, Jetlines has realized a significant milestone in our operations,” said CEO, Javier Suarez. “We

In preparation for its first flight in 2019, Canada Jetlines, has cleared its first hurdle by successfully submitting operations manuals to Transport Canada to receive its Air Operator Certificate. Starting January 2019, Air Transat will offer its passengers an air-rail travel package in partnership with SNCF, France’s national rail service. Air Transat customers will be able to purchase a TGV Air ticket, comprising a flight to Paris plus rail service on SNCF’s highspeed TGV rail network within France or to Brussels, Belgium. “With this new TGV Air partnership with Air Transat, we are making high-speed rail service departing from and arriving at Paris–Charles de Gaulle station available to even more customers,” said Rémi Habfast, Voyages SNCF’s commercial director for TGV Nord. “SNCF is known all over the world for its TGV, its reliability and its quality service. This agreement also strengthens SNCF’s presence and visibility outside France.” For example, from the ParisCDG 2 TGV station at Paris– Charles de Gaulle airport, served by Air Transat’s direct flights out of Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal (daily) and Quebec City, the TGV Air product will connect Air Transat passengers with 19 French provincial cities, plus Brussels. “We are the leading air carrier connecting Canada and France in summer, with our direct flights to eight French cities,” said Annick Guérard, chief operating officer, Transat. “With TGV Air, we want to make life easier for travellers and broaden their horizons year-round, making it easy for families, friends and holidayers to get where they want to go in France or Belgium, experiencing new destinations and reaching them faster. We are pleased to be the first airline in mainland North America to offer this service in partnership with SNCF. TGV Air is the perfect complement to our range of direct flights to France and Belgium.” Depending on departure date, Air Transat passengers will have access to the TGV Air service product year-round or may book air travel only to and from France and Belgium. Air Transat passengers may book the TGV Air service product from Canada, starting in December 2018.

The final milestone will be achieved through conducting
interviews, hiring and the training of all staff to prepare for aircraft delivery in the second quarter of 2019. “We are proud of the operations team and the work they have carried out to date,” said Mark Morabito, executive chairman, Canada Jetlines. “Their hard work and talent have brought us one step closer to enabling Jetlines to offer a true ultra-low fare service for the
long haul.” Canada Jetlines was granted a five-year Foreign Ownership Exemption Order from the Government of Canada, which permits it to conduct domestic air services while having up to 49 per cent foreign voting interests in the airline—an increase from 25 per cent that is otherwise permitted. Icelandair adds more flight times Starting May 2019, Icelandair will be adding new departures from Keflavik Airport to better serve its North American customers. These departures are additions to current connecting times, which are early in the morning and afternoon. These changes are also related to the ongoing renewal of the Icelandair fleet of aircraft. The airline has already received three Boeing 737-MAX aircraft and will be welcoming an additional six planes early next year. Icelandair will also be increas-

London’s Heathrow Airport has maintained its position as the world’s most connected airport, according to air travel data company OAG. OAG’s Annual Megahubs International Index for 2018 measures the ratio of scheduled international connections to the number of destinations served by an airport in a six-hour window. Heathrow offered 66,000 connections on the busiest day for aviation.
The UK hub was followed by Chicago O’Hare, which moved up to second place this year, followed by Frankfurt in third. The other airports in the top 10 for connectivity are Amsterdam, Toronto, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Singapore, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Jakarta. The United States improved its rankings with three airports in the top 10 and a total of 13 in the top 50 International Megahubs. The fast-growing Asia-
Pacific region had six airports in the top 20, with Singapore Changi in 8th overall, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta in 10th, Kuala Lumpur 12th, Hong Kong 13th, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi 14th and Seoul Incheon 15th. China’s top airport for connectivity was Shanghai Pudong, which came in at 24th, while Guangzhou Baiyun reached 31st place and Beijing Capital 32nd.

Alaska Airlines and Neste partner to expand use of sustainable fuels
Alaska Airlines made history as the first in the world to fly two commercial flights using a new biofuel made from forest residuals—the stumps and branches leftover after a timber harvest.
As part of Alaska Airlines’ ongoing efforts to fly greener and expand use of sustainable aviation fuels, the airline has signed an agreement with Neste, the world’s largest producer of renewable diesel, to increase fuel-efficiency and adopt innovative flight technology. The agreement will allow Neste and Alaska to more closely work together to design, create and implement solutions that lay the groundwork for the wider adoption of renewable fuels within the airline industry. The two companies share the view that closer collaboration within the industry and with key partners will help create the “lift” necessary to help move aviation in the right direction. The aviation industry has set ambitious targets to mitigate
greenhouse gas emissions from air transportation, including carbon-neutral growth from 2020 and beyond, and a 50 per cent reduction of net aviation CO2 emissions by 2050 relative to 2005 levels. Alaska recognizes that the move toward sustainable aviation fuels will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce turbine emissions and potentially provide other performance and operational benefits. Working with other airlines, Alaska is addressing the reality of climate change by adopting targets to mitigate CO2 emissions from air transport. In addition to the reduction of emissions and as part of its sustainability platform, Alaska is identifying operational efficiencies that will protect the environment. These include efficient air-

craft design, optimized approach paths that reduce fuel use, in-cabin recycling and reduced paperwork and paper consumption. At present, the only viable replacement for fossil jet fuel as an energy source for commercial aviation is sustainable aviation biofuel. Neste MY Renewable Jet Fuel technology has been proven in thousands of commercial flights and can be easily adopted by airlines without the need for additional investments in new jet engines or segregated fuel distribution system. Partnerships between companies like Neste and Alaska provide a good foundation to enable the airline industry to continue connecting the world, reducing greenhouse emissions and ensuring a healthy planet.

SkyTeam alliance launches metasearch website tool The SkyTeam global airline alliance has launched a new metasearch tool on its website making it easier for customers to plan and book trips on all its member airlines. SkyTeam is the first airline alliance to offer a comprehensive flight search tool that harnesses the full scope of its global network, showing real-time availability, schedule and pricing information across 1,074 destinations with clearly displayed results all in one place. SkyTeam’s Find Flights metasearch works in three simple steps: • The customer enters their dates of travel and itinerary in Find Flights on skyteam.com. • The metasearch aggregates all the flight options for the customer from the member airlines, which are then all displayed on one page. • The customer selects the preferred trip from real-time price, schedule, availability, and routing, and is then redirected to the chosen airline’s website to complete the purchase. “Find Flights is the most used online function for the millions of unique visitors to our site each year, the majority of whom tell us they want to book travel online with ease,” said Kristin Colvile,

The Allbird eye mask is a sustainable product made from New Zealand merino wool and castor bean oil-based foam.
Air New Zealand and innovative footwear brand Allbirds have joined forces to bring added comfort to the inflight experience with an intelligently designed eye mask to help customers sleep better and wake up fresh. Dubbed ‘the Bird Mask’ due to its birdlike features, Allbirds has transformed the humble airline eye mask into a luxurious and sustainable travel companion designed to
be used again and again. Like Allbirds’ revolutionary footwear, the mask is made from sustainable, ZQ-certified New Zealand merino wool and castor bean oil-based foam. The essential San Diego Beer Week Guide Jazz is one of the largest regional airlines in the world, serving 70 destinations in Canada and the United States, and providing customers with seamless connections to the worldwide networks of Air Canada and the Star Alliance under the brand name Air Canada Express (formerly Air Canada Jazz). With the most flights to the most communities in Canada, Jazz is the airline that brings together family, friends and business. Jazz offers a professional working environment and opportunities for individual career growth. San Diego, the Craft Beer Capital of America, welcomes visitors to raise a pint and toast the milestone 10th anniversary of San Diego Beer Week (SDBW), November 2-11, 2018. Presented by the San Diego Brewers Guild, this premier, annual celebration showcases beers from more than 130 local craft breweries at events held throughout San Diego County at participating breweries, bars, restaurants and more. One of the country’s biggest beer weeks, SDBW is expanding Beer Week 2018 by welcoming breweries from neighboring Tijuana and Baja, Mexico, paying homage to the Cali-Baja culture that makes San Diego a unique destination. The following are some tips for making the most of your beer-cation: Research: From planning your time wisely to knowing the origins of craft beer, it pays to be an informed visitor during SDBW. • Pouring over San Diego’s craft beer scene during SDBW can seem a little overwhelming, but thanks to the San Diego Brewers Guild’s official new “SD Beer” mobile app (available for iOS and Android), all the info visitors need is just a tap and a swipe away. • Discover how agriculture, cities, writing and religion all have ties to ancient craft brewing at the fascinating BEERology exhibit at the San Diego Museum of Man in Balboa Park. Sponsored by several San Diego breweries, the exhibit explores ancient Egyptians, Sumerians, Chinese, and even beerloving headhunters from the Amazon that perfected the brewing arts in interesting, and even strange, ways. Visitors can learn fascinating stories and see phenomenal artifacts that reveal the links between beer and culture, such as the solid gold beer
cup of an Inca king. Let Someone Else Do the Driving: When it comes to SDBW events, ridesharing is an appealing option thanks to discounted rides with Lyft. For visitors looking to do in-depth exploration of the local beer scene, several tour companies provide rides with season experts. • Explore the sudsier side of San Diego on customized private or public tours, featuring a driver and tour guide that picks up guests at their hotels. A fun and safe way to visit San Diego’s breweries, companies like Brew Hop, Brewery Tours of San Diego and San Diego Beer, Wine & Spirits Tour do all the driving while visitors partake in all the beer tasting. Take Time to Unwind: While in San Diego, it’s important to enjoy some down time and relaxation, both of which can be done with beer in hand. • Visitors can tap into spiritual well-being and inner peace at San Diego breweries with Hoppy Yoga, offering yoga sessions for all levels at a featured brewery followed by an optional beer social. The cost is $20 per person and includes a tasting flight or pint. Money saving packages are available, including the 2-pack ($35) and 6-pack ($90). • Every Friday night (7:30-10 p.m.), Flagship Cruises hosts a Hops on the Harbor craft beer dinner cruise featuring a different San Diego brewery each month. Cruise highlights include craft beer flights by the featured brewery, gourmet food stations, meet and greet with brewers, dancing, prize giveaways and spectacular views of San Diego Bay. For more information on San Diego’s offerings, including vacation packages and valuable coupons for attractions, restaurants and more, visit the San Diego Tourism Authority’s website at sandiego.org.

Richmond’s EV charging infrastructure wins Excellence Award The City of Richmond’s innovative Electric Vehicle (EV) infrastructure requirement has been honoured with the Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM) Community Excellence Award for governance. As the first jurisdiction in North America to implement this policy, Richmond is making history by requiring all residential parking spaces in new property developments to provide a level two EV charging infrastructure. After a rigorous multi-stakeholder consultation process and a groundbreaking costing study, this new policy
was implemented to remove barriers and provide the community with options to transition to more sustainable zero-carbon transportation systems. Annually, the Union of B.C. Municipalities awards its members with Community Excellence recognition. In the governance category, a member is recognized for its governance processes and policies that exemplify best practices in accountability, policies that encourage citizen participation, effectiveness, and long-term thinking. and complex clutch technology, along with the lightweight materials used in this vehicle, is just a small part of what makes it a beautiful car to drive.

While this article is about clutch replacement on the Audi S4, I am not highlighting the vehicle’s dual mass flywheel or focusing on modern clutch technology, but instead the use of innovative weight-saving materials related to this job. Auto manufacturers are constantly looking for ways to save weight for improved fuel economy and engine performance. For example, it is understood that shaving a few hundred pounds from a car will require less fuel, and the addition of a 300-horsepower engine will move a lighter car much faster. On many high end cars, aluminum frames and body metal are utilized—even vehicles such as the Ford F150 pickup now utilizes an aluminum frame. Our featured Audi certainly has aluminum in the body, but it was while doing this clutch replacement that we saw some additional weight-reduction features. Firstly, the transmission-toengine bolts were made of aluminum. It’s quite unnerving to hold these large bolts in your hand—they are featherweight. From years of working on cars we definitely get a feel for the weight of a bolt and these are incredibly light. Solution for October 2018 Crossword.

The biggest disadvantage with these aluminum bolts is that they are can only be used once. We have noticed this happening with more vehicles—bolts must be included in the service cost. The other weight-reduction part that we noted from this job was the clutch slave cylinder, which was made entirely of plastic. It, too, was featherweight. These are just a couple examples of what manufacturers are doing to reduce vehicle weight. While the bolts and slave cylinder probable reduce the vehicle’s weight by one kilogram, the overall reduction can be impres-
sive when these materials are used throughout. Clutch replacement on this Audi S4 is time consuming and expensive. As with most high-end European cars many hours are required to remove the transmission and clutch, replace the parts and perform the reinstallation. This clutch utilizes a dual mass flywheel and there is no single mass conversion kit available. With all the labour involved in removing and reinstalling the transmission it also makes sense to change the flywheel at the same time as the clutch, rather than risking having to do it at
