Canada and the United Kingdom have successfully concluded a new Open Skiestype air transport agreement. The new agreement will allow any number of Canadian and British air carriers to operate between both countries and gives those airlines full flexibility on frequency of service, pricing and route selection, including via third countries. The agreement also includes unrestricted rights for all-cargo services as well as code-share services—when an air carrier sells seats on a flight operated by another carrier. “The Canada-UK trading relationship is at the core of our DNA as a trading nation,” said the Honourable James Gordon Carr, Canada’s

Minister of International Trade Diversification. “As Canada’s largest trading partner in Europe, the successful conclusion of negotiations of this agreement is a great example of how our relationship will
continue to flourish. It reinforces confidence for millions of friends and families travelling between our two great nations and ensures that Canadian exporters will continue to benefit from critical air transport

services across the Atlantic for their goods and services.” The new agreement will take effect when the United Kingdom, Canada’s third largest two-way air travel market, is no longer covered by the
Canada-European Union Comprehensive Air Transport Agreement. Air Canada welcomed the news of the new air services agreement between the two countries, especially since the U.K. is the airline’s largest international market and London Heathrow Airport its largest international operation. “This agreement is important as it provides our airline, and the two-million Air Canada customers we carry each year between the two countries, certainty that our operations will be uninterrupted by Brexit,” said Ferio Pugliese, senior vice president, regional markets and government relations at Air Canada. Each year, just before the holiday season, Air Transat and the Children’s Wish Foundation sponsor a flight with Santa Claus for hundreds of children across Canada. Children and their families are welcomed by elves and animated characters at check-in counters at Vancouver to YVR, Toronto-Pearson and Montreal-Trudeau before take-off in an Air Transat airplane. Once in the air, Santa himself appears in the cabin, much to the delight of everyone on board. “At Air Transat, it warms our heart to enable hundreds of children and their families to experience a unique and magical moment,” said Annick Guérard, chief operating officer, Transat. “Since 2004, this
flight holds a very special place in our hearts, and every year we are amazed by the dedication of the Foundation, our employees, volunteers and collaborators that make this tradition such a wonderful event. They go all out to make this day an unforgettable one.” During this year’s unique event, Air Transat announced a donation of $80,000 to the Children’s Wish Foundation, which represents the amounts collected over the past year as part of the air carrier’s Small Change, Big Hearts program and other initiatives. December YVR construction update
Community
YVR is undergoing a multi-year expansion plans that will see the airport complete 75 major projects, totaling $9.1-billion over the next 20 years.
There are several key projects currently taking place at YVR that will enhance the airport experience. This includes its biggest sustainability projects to date, new parking options, terminal expansions and much more. Terminal • There are various improvements taking place to a section of Pier B, in the Domestic Terminal. As part of this work, there is hoarding and phased closures of two passenger hold rooms, as well as a scaffolding structure in a corridor. Work is anticipated to be complete by June 2019. • As part of the International Pier D expansion project, steel work has begun. This will take place airside and may
include noisy work. Given that there are 24-hour operations in this part of the terminal, it is understood that this could potentially be disruptive for those with flights at nearby gates. If you are looking for somewhere quiet, you can find seating in the creek area, near the food court. • In order to improve the airport’s processes for transfer passengers, there is work taking place in the transborder terminal. There may be intermittent noise within the U.S. pre-board screening area, as well as U.S. Customs during daytime hours. • Last month, construction began on an enclosed area between the International and Domestic terminals. As work continues, there may be intermittent noise. This
work is being done to create a temporary baggage system, which is expected to be in place until July 2019. Parking • As part of the jetSet Parking lot reconfiguration project, the cell phone lot has been temporarily relocated. There is clear directional signage to the lot. When construction is complete, it will be paved and have WiFi, offering an improved customer experience. • A section of McDonald Road is now closed for construction traffic only. This work is part of the project to extend the east apron for Remote Stand Operations. Please follow all directional signage to the new McDonald Road, located east of North Service Place.
and Japadog food stand will remain in the current location. • Construction started in November on the Great Blue Heron Multi-Use Pathway. The project is expected to be complete by January 2019. The path will connect to the existing path on Airport Road, connecting alongside Larry Berg Flight Path Park, across Russ Baker Way to Cessna Drive. • Construction is underway to prepare for Phase II of the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport. This phase is scheduled to open in Spring 2019 and will deliver more than 7,800 square metres of additional retail space. For more information, visit yvr.ca/ construction.
In and Around Sea Island • Various work is continuing in the old Value Lot (adjacent to the Parkade) to prepare for the construction of a new six-storey parking lot and Central Utilities Building. This month, the work includes traffic control measures around the south-west exit and utilities relocation. Please follow all directional signage in the area. • As part of ongoing construction for YVR’s new Parkade and Central Utilities Building, preparatory work started late last month outside International Arrivals on level 2 in Chester Johnson Park. In order to facilitate the work, a section of the park is now closed. The pet relief area

Each issue can be accessed online each month at www.skytalkonline.com.
It’s hard to believe that we will soon hit the 25-million passenger mark. And what’s even more incredible is that it was originally a 2020 goal! Yet here we are. After five years of hard work and careful planning, our passenger count has soared from 17.9- to 25-million-plus. As you can expect, this has had a profound impact on our airport. We are now one of North America’s fastest-growing major international airports. We have a wide range of expansion projects underway and there is simply more of everything: more people moving through our terminal on any given day, more flights connecting people and products to destinations all over the world and more economic benefits for our region—through construction and our ongoing growth. To celebrate our 25-millionth passenger and everything this momentous number represents, we have put together an ambitious 25 Million campaign—complete with amazing giveaways and prizes, all leading up to the big day on December 18 when we unveil a grand prize. The campaign highlights
many of the people and organizations that make our airport great—from our retail partners to our many airlines, construction businesses and much more. Of course, we can’t possibly capture everyone who contributes to YVR’s success in one campaign. So, on that note I want to stress that our success is truly a team effort. It is thanks to you—our community members, business partners and employees. We are entering not just another busy holiday period but an incredible growth phase, where we will transform the airport to ensure it continues to connect everyone proudly to the world. We couldn’t do it without your support and patience. So, thank you for supporting our airport and making us proud. As a community-based organization, we are committed to serving you and we will continue to do this by reinvesting our success back into the airport and the region. For more information on the campaign, check out our social channels and yvr.ca/yvr25million. Craig Richmond is president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority.

Air transport agreement from page 1
“We applaud both governments for their foresight in making advance preparations to ensure the stability of this vital market, ” said Pugliese. In 2019, Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge will operate up to 91 round-trip flights weekly between Canada and the U.K. from seven Canadian gateways, making it the largest carrier in the market.
This new Canada-UK agreement was reached under Canada’s Blue Sky policy, which encourages long-term, sustainable competition and the development of international air services. Under the Blue Sky policy, the Government of Canada has concluded new or expanded air transport agreements covering 105 countries.
Travel Tips from page 1 • The airport staff is doing its part to conserve B.C.’s natural gas and have lowered the temperature in the terminal slightly. You may want to consider keeping a sweater in your carry-on baggage. • If you are driving to the airport, have a parking plan. Pre-book your YVR parking at yvr.ca. • Travel to YVR on the Canada Line is quick and efficient, delivering you to the terminal door in 26 minutes or less. • Allow ample time to check in, clear security and board your flight. Factor in time for traffic congestion, parking
and walking to the terminal. • For a broad selection of inflight food, check out YVR Food on the Fly. Your favourite YVR restaurant will package up a meal or snack to take with you on the flight. • Forgot someone on your holiday giving list? YVR’s retail shops offer up an extensive array of gift options and free gift-wrapping is available post security for these purchases. Questions? Keep an eye out for YVR’s friendly group of Customer Care employees in blue jackets and Green Coat volunteers.
‘Fog Woman and Raven’ sculpture at YVR. Photo: Joan Stewart.
The art collection at YVR is an award-winning visual display that gives visitors through the airport a unique journey of Land, Sea and Sky, with each terminal building strategically representing the cultural heritage, natural beauty and experiences that embody British Columbia. One of the most stunning sculptures is that of Fog Woman & Raven by Dempsey Bob, of Tahltan and Tlingit First Nations descent. Located in the International Departures area, his captivating sculpture tells the story of how the annual salmon run originated. In Bob’s telling, Fog Woman created and controlled the salmon. Raven, a greedy and cunning trickster married Fog Woman to have access to the riches of her salmon. When Fog Woman realized she was being used for her salmon, she retreated into the fog,
taking all the salmon with her, but allowing them to return once a year to spawn and bring food to the people. Carved from a red Cedar log, Raven perches on the side of a pool behind Fog Woman looking satisfied, while Fog Woman,
carved from a block of laminated yellow cedar, kneels at the head of a stream that flows toward the river and the ocean with salmon in her hands. To learn more about art and architecture at YVR, visit yvr. ca.

Helijet partners with Pacific Salmon Foundation Helijet International and the Pacific Salmon Foundation (PSF) have created a new partnership that is designed to generate donations to help the PSF fund wild salmon restoration projects in the Strait of Georgia and on Vancouver Island. “Helijet has been a proud supporter of PSF for the last 15 years,” said Danny Sitnam, president and CEO of Helijet. “Like many other British Columbians, we depend on the beauty and natural resources of B.C.’s coast for the longevity of our business, which is linked to the success of our fishing lodge clients and the satisfaction of their guests. “If we don’t do our part to help protect salmon stocks and our West Coast environment, it will impact all of us. Our company benefits from the recreational fishing sector, but doing our part to help maintain the overall wellbeing of coastal B.C. is also the right thing to do.” The partnership will generate an annual donation based on the number of one-way flights sold on Helijet’s scheduled passenger service routes between Vancouver and Nanaimo harbours and it is anticipated that annual donations as much as $24,000 per year could be achieved. “Helijet has sponsored PSF’s fundraising dinners for well over

a decade,” said Michael Meneer, executive vice president of PSF. “We were thrilled when Helijet president Danny Sitnam said that they wanted to step up their commitment. The result is this unique partnership that will raise money for Pacific salmon, and help us significantly reduce costs, by donating chopper time to our Chinook restoration program in Rivers Inlet, BC, with the Wuikinuxv First Nation.” This September, Helijet donated a helicopter and pilot for an egg-take on the Chuckwalla and Kilbella rivers in Rivers Inlet. Eggs and milt were collected from returning Chinook in both rivers and flown to the Percy Walkus Hatchery also in Rivers Inlet. The fertilized eggs will become approximately 130,000 salmon fry that will be
released back into the rivers to enhance those stocks. The rivers were identified as a top priority by a steering committee dedicated to Rivers Inlet recovery. To help spread awareness of PSF’s work, the PSF logo will be emblazoned on Helijet’s fleet of courtesy vehicles and on a brandnew Sikorsky S-76 helicopter. “Apart from the importance of raising funds, this is also a great opportunity for PSF to generate awareness among potential new donors and supporters,” said Sitnam. “Many of our customers who fly between Vancouver and Vancouver Island are anglers or government workers who are uniquely positioned to make a difference for salmon.” To read more about PSF, visit psf.ca.

Through early 2019, the power system will continue to be upgraded and tested in stages to advance it for flight. Meanwhile, the Ardiden 3Z engine will undergo ground tests in France and the U.S., ahead of integration with the flying testbed in 2019, which will continue to be upgraded with successive prototypes until start of certification in 2020-21. “This aircraft is going to transform how we live and work,” said founder and Aero
chief engineer Matt Knapp. “We’ve pushed ourselves to challenge conventional wisdom and the limits of engineering to deliver an aircraft of which we are extremely proud—one that offers efficiency and performance without compromise.” The new 12-passenger aircraft are designed to deliver breakthrough operating costs of 8 cents per available seat mile or $250 per hour for the aircraft, which is 60-80 per cent lower than comparable conventional aircraft of comparable size. Founded in 2013, Zunum Aero is funded by Boeing HorizonX, Jet Blue Technology Ventures and the State of Washington Clean Energy Fund.

YVR’s Airport South includes the South Terminal Building and the public floatplane facility on the Fraser River. It is a hub for small aircraft, float planes, helicopter operations, corporate charters, sport fishing camps and aerospace facilities.
Vancouver International Airport YVR will welcome more than 25-million travellers this year, setting a record for its annual passenger traffic (see “Celebrating 25-million passengers” on page 3 of this issue). Most of those travellers will pass through YVR’s main terminals located on Grant McConachie Way, but at least another 500,000 people—including private passengers—will pass through YVR’s South Terminal, a facility located nearby on Cowley Crescent. From the South Terminal at Airport South, airlines such as
For aviation enthusiasts, there is a plane-spotting platform adjacent to the South Terminal building that allows unobstructed views of the South Runway with complimentary parking available for those visiting the platform. The Coast Guard also maintains 24-hour availability at its base of operations close by, where their hovercraft vessels are stored at the ready, if a call comes for response. Airport South is also steeped in YVR history. It is the original site of the airport’s terminal building and where the famous Centennial Rocket, created in
Pacific Coastal Airlines, Central Mountain Air and KD Air connect travellers to B.C.’s interior and to the world. In fact, if YVR’s Airport South was its own airport it would be one of the 30 busiest in Canada. Airport South includes the South Terminal Building and a public floatplane facility attached to the world-famous Flying Beaver Bar and Grill from which patrons can watch the arrival and departure of Harbour Air’s seaplanes on the Middle Arm of the Fraser River. Further down river, there is
another dock from which Seair operates its float planes, flying scheduled Vancouver Island and other Gulf Islands routes, as well as private charters and scenic flights. Between the South Terminal, floatplane docks, Helijet helipad and several private airline hangars and fixed-base operators (FBOs) that operate out of Airport South, there is a world of exciting airport action that includes small aircraft, helicopter operations and corporate charters to sport fishing camps taking place just off the banks of the Fraser River.

Marriott properties acknowledge massive data hack Last month, the Marriott properties hotel chain confirmed that approximately 500-million guests have had their personal data compromised in a massive hack of its Starwood Hotels and Resorts brand. A subsequent investigation into the incident revealed that unauthorized access to the Starwood network system had been taking place since 2014. The incident is one of the biggest single breaches of personal consumer data to date. According to the hotel chain spokesperson, affected guests have been notified of the data breach via email. In a statement, the company said: “Marriott deeply regrets this incident happened. From the start, we moved quickly to contain the incident and conduct a thorough investigation with the assistance of leading security experts. Marriott is working hard to ensure our guests have answers to questions about their personal information with a dedicated website and call center…. Marriott is also devoting the resources necessary to phase out Starwood systems and accelerate the ongoing security enhancements to our network.” According to Marriott, the database, which contained guest information relating to reservations at Starwood properties, was accessed on or before Sept. 10, 2018. Starwood properties involved include: • W Hotels • St. Regis • Sheraton Hotels & Resorts • Westin Hotels & Resorts • Element Hotels • Aloft Hotels • The Luxury Collection • Tribute Portfolio • Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts • Four Points by Sheraton • Design Hotels that participate in the Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) program • Starwood-branded timeshare properties For approximately 327-million of these guests, the information includes some combination of name, mailing address, phone number, email address, passport number, Starwood Preferred Guest (“SPG”) account information, date of birth, gender, arrival and departure information, reservation date, and communication preferences. For the remaining guests, the information was limited to name and sometimes other data such as mailing address, email address, or other information. A dedicated call center for guests’ questions about the incident has also been established,
open seven days a week and available in multiple languages. Marriott is also providing guests in Canada, the U.S., and the U.K. the opportunity to enroll in privacy-monitoring service WebWatcher free of charge for one year. The program monitors inter-
net sites where personal information is shared and generates an alert to the consumer if evidence of the consumer’s personal information is found. More information can be found at Marriott’s dedicated website at answers.kroll. com.

The Icelandair sovereignty aircraft painted in the colours of the Icelandic flag.
On December 1, 1918, Iceland became a free and sovereign nation when the Union Treaty with Denmark came into effect. The Union Treaty was an important step towards full independence, which was achieved on June 17, 1944. Before 1918, Iceland had been under the rule of first Norway and then Denmark for centuries, since the end of the Commonwealth in 1262. In celebration of Iceland’s centenary and continuing the tradition of naming its aircraft after Icelandic volcanoes and natural wonders, Icelandair took the opportunity to unveil a special new livery for one of its 757 aircraft. The new Þingvellir (pronounced Thingvellir, for those unfamiliar with Icelandic letters) sovereignty aircraft is painted in

On the body of the aircraft are the words: 100 Fullveldi Íslands (100 Sovereignty Iceland). The Þingvellir area is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and national park. Aside
from its historical importance, the area is of great geological interest as well. The Þingvellir plains are in fact a rift valley on the boundary between two tectonic plates, created by their drifting apart. It’s one of the few places in the world where this phenomenon can be seen clearly on dry land.
YVR issues $250-million of Series G Debentures
Diana Vuong, YVR’s vice president, finance and chief financial officer.
THE FLIGHT IS DIRECT
Vancouver Airport Authority recently closed a private placement of C$250 million aggregate principal amount of 3.656 per cent Series G unsecured debentures due November 2048. “The successful sale of our Series G debentures reflects the strength of YVR’s unique community focused and financially independent governance model,” said Diana Vuong, YVR’s vice president, finance and chief financial officer. “The 3.656 per cent rate on the debentures represents the lowest issued
rate by Vancouver Airport Authority with a 30-year term and I am happy to report that both Standard & Poor’s and DBRS have confirmed our rating at AA and AA (low), respectively. Our AA credit rating is the second-highest airport rating in the world.” The net proceeds from the Series G debenture issuance will be used to refinance Vancouver Airport Authority’s outstanding C$200 million aggregate principal amount of 4.424 per cent Series D debentures due December 7, 2018 and for general corporate purposes.

Canada’s airports welcome engagement on federal tourism strategy The Canadian Airports Council (CAC) has been actively engaged with the Government of Canada on federal action concerning the development of a tourism strategy, including challenges and opportunities facing the country’s air transport sector. As such, last month the CAC welcomed the announcement of an Advisory Council on Jobs and the Visitor Economy to assist Melanie Joly, Minister of Tourism and Official Languages in the development of a strategy by next summer. Some of the CAC’s prebudget submissions for Federal Budget 2019 next spring include the following: • Service level standards for government services at airports, notably security screening and border services conducted by the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), respectively. • Infrastructure funding for small airports and for regional ground connectivity. • Reconsidering the fiscal approach to airports, which contributed $368-million to the federal government in “airport rent” last year, and towards eliminating rent for all airports with fewer than three-million passengers.
• Programs to improve international connections through Canada, which help support new international air routes and additional service on existing routes that would not be viable without connecting traffic. This would open new opportunities and capacity for travellers to come to Canada. “Tourism does help every part of the country, urban and rural, and it does support middle-class jobs that cannot be easily replaced,” said CAC president Daniel-Robert Gooch. “Many of these are in air transport and given the important role of air transport to the success of our tourism sector, an effective tourism strategy must consider the government role in addressing issues and opportunities identified by Canada’s airports and our partners in the air travel supply chain.” The CAC has 53 members representing more than 100 airports, including all the privately operated National Airports System (NAS) airports and many municipal airports across Canada. Together, CAC members handle virtually all the nation’s air cargo and international passenger traffic, and 95 per cent of domestic passenger traffic. CAC members provide municipal, provincial and federal governments $6.9-billion in tax revenues each year.

Merry Christmas & Safe Driving to all our Loyal Customers.
Cold, dry, powder snow offers comparatively better traction than moist snow. Photo: courtesy Kallerna.
During the winter months, it is critical to make driving defensively the number one priority. The best tip for driving in severe winter weather conditions is to avoid it. If you do not have to travel to work or school, try your best to stay off the roads. There is no reason to put yourself in danger if driving in snow and ice is not necessary. In addition, it is also important to prepare for roadside emergencies. Keep an emergency roadside kit in your car and make sure you have extra blankets and snacks and proper gear for staying warm in a storm should you get in an accident and must wait for help. Following is a list of some of the most common problems faced in winter months along with top tips on how to avoid getting into these situations in the first place. Visibility Issues During winter time the sun sets a bit earlier in the day, meaning there’s less daylight, which can be an issue especially during your commute back home. Fix any burnt-out bulbs to maximize your visibility to other drivers as well as being able to see the road clearly. Completely defrost your front and back windshields before driving Frost significantly reduces visibility. Even if there is no snow or icy to deal with, make sure that your vehicle’s windows are completely defrosted before driving. Check Your Tires You want to ensure you switch over to your winter tires
well in advance of the temperatures dropping. Ensure your tires are properly inflated as air pressure decreases in cold weather. Having four matching, properly inflated winter tires will give better traction. Check Your Battery It’s more difficult for batteries to operate in cold weather than in warm weather. A load test on your battery before winter is vital to make sure the battery is working properly and will last you through the season. Understand your winter driving skills Think about other safe options rather than just ‘going for it’ such as turning around to go another way, waiting until the problem has cleared or pulling over to park and leave your car. Use a lower gear to provide more traction Your vehicle will be less likely to accelerate quickly if it begins to slide on an icy road if it is being driven in a lower gear. Never use cruise control
in winter weather conditions, since there is a chance that a loss of traction will not be detected before it is too late to react. Understand winter road conditions Streets and hills are slippery overall, side streets are narrower due to plowed snow along the curb, driving through deep water can damage your car and parking lots will be more difficult to maneuver within. Drive with lights on, even during the day Winter weather conditions reduce visibility. Even if it is not snowing, sleeting, or icing at the moment, your headlights will serve as an extra safety precaution. Plan Ahead Lastly, check weather and road reports before you drive anywhere. Don’t use your vehicle if the weather is extremely bad or at least wait until the road conditions improve. Also, think about changing your routine during winter months to avoid dangerous situations.
