To commemorate the first anniversary of the Musqueam Indian Band – YVR Airport Sustainability and Friendship Agreement, a design competition for Musqueam youth and established artists was launched at YVR. The competition sought an approach that captured the strong YVR-Musqueam relationship, with its shared interests and mutual respect, while tying into YVR’s awardwinning Sense of Place. After much deliberation by a selection committee, composed of representatives from YVR and Musqueam, the competition winners announced were Thomas Cannell and his daughter Summer, who submitted their first joint design.

Thomas and Summer’s winning design, which will be unveiled in the coming weeks, draws on the Musqueam teaching of raising open hands to give thanks and offer a friendly greeting. “It symbolizes the opening of hearts and minds, showing both strength and vulnerability,” noted Thomas and Summer. “The design is a timeless story, meant to invoke feelings of a joyful friendship between Musqueam and YVR for years to come.” While Thomas and Summer took first place, the selection committee was very impressed by everyone’s submissions—so much so that awards were provided to each artist and YVR will be looking

The design competition is one of many benefits in the YVR-Musqueam agreement, which seeks to foster the longterm sustainability of YVR through cooperation with the Musqueam people. In addition to providing jobs, scholarships and revenue-

sharing, the agreement creates an environment that encourages shared cultural experiences and initiatives. Throughout 2019, YVR will work on a range of initiatives under the agreement. This includes the full roll-out of the winning design.

Construction is wrapping up on YVR’s new jetSet YVR Parking product. The existing jetSet Parking is being improved to provide customers with an ultra-efficient service. jetSet YVR Parking will remain in its current location on North Service Road, minutes from the terminal, with complimentary YVR shuttle bus service available. Starting next month, customers will enter the new facility and drop off their vehicle in a designated drop-off lane. From there, customers will take their baggage into the customer service building, where they will check in and drop off their keys before a five-minute bus ride to the terminal. This drop-and-go service is popular throughout Europe

and YVR is the first to bring this technology and approach to North America. The entire process from entering the parking facility to arriving at the terminal will take about 15 minutes. YVR is experiencing record passenger growth, with current terminal facilities nearing capacity. Several multiyear expansion projects are taking place in order to meet future demand. The new jetSet YVR Parking product will enhance the current parking services offered at YVR and complement the existing options: Gateway Valet, Parkade and Value Long Term. For more information about YVR parking options as well as to book online to reserve and save, visit yvr.ca/parking.

February YVR construction update

There are several ongoing key projects currently taking place at YVR that will enhance the airport experience for everyone. These include YVR’s biggest sustainability projects to date, new parking options, terminal expansions and much more.

Terminal • There will be various improvements to a section of Pier B, in the Domestic terminal. As part of this work, there will be hoarding and phased closures of two passenger hold rooms, as well

as a scaffolding structure in a corridor. Work is anticipated to be complete by June 2019. • As part of the International Pier D expansion project, steel work has begun. This will take place airside and may include noisy work.

Given that there are 24-hour operations in this part of the terminal, this work could potentially be disruptive for those with flights at nearby gates. Travellers who are seeking somewhere quiet can find seating in the creek area, near the food court. • There may be intermittent noise at U.S. check-in, U.S. pre-board screening area as well as U.S. Customs dur-

ing daytime hours. This work is being done to improve YVR’s processes for transfer passengers. • In November, construction began on an enclosed area between the International and Domestic terminals to create a temporary baggage system during which there may be intermittent noise. Work is expected to be complete in July 2019.

Construction Update In and Around Sea Island • Various work is continuing in the old Value Lot (adjacent to the Parkade) for the construction of a new six-storey parking lot and Central Utilities Building. A new toll plaza is now open and is the first permanent structure of the new Parkade. Please follow all directional signage in the area. • As part of ongoing construction for YVR’s new Parkade and Central Utilities Building, preparatory work is taking place outside International Arrivals on level 2 in Chester Johnson Park. In order to facilitate the work, a section of the park is now closed. The pet relief area and Japadog will remain in the current location. • Construction is underway to prepare for Phase II of the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport. This phase is scheduled to open in Summer 2019 and will deliver more than 7,800 square metres of additional retail space. Parking • A section of McDonald Road is closed for construction traffic only. This work is part of the project to extend the east apron for Remote Stand Operations. Please follow all directional signage to the new McDonald Road, located east of North Service Place. For more information on these construction projects, visit yvr.ca/construction.

If you’ve been to YVR this January, you’ll notice that it hasn’t slowed down much since the holiday rush. After all, we welcomed a record 25.9-million passengers in 2018 and we are set to continue this pace for 2019— with a goal to reach 29 million by 2020. While passenger growth brings many benefits, including economic growth for our region, it also has very real implications for our terminal, which is nearing its capacity limits. To address this “good problem,” we embarked on an ambitious $9.1-billion expansion program in 2018, which will see 75 projects completed over 20 years. Several of these projects are now well underway. In fact, you can’t help but notice them. That large open space with lots of machinery near the parkade—that will soon be the

home of a second parkade and a central utilities building, set to be operational in 2021. And underneath both buildings will be a new GeoExchange field, one of the largest in Canada, in charge of heating and cooling our main terminal building. We will soon launch a new jetSet YVR Parking product. The approach for this new product is very efficient: you pull up, an employee parks your vehicle, and you get on a shuttle for the airport—saving time and taking the stress of having to park out of your journey. Inside the terminal, we have several offerings set to launch in 2019. This includes new food and beverage choices, which we will unveil soon. In addition, we are working on several terminal improvements—from baggage to checkin areas and more.

You also may have noticed a building forming at the end of our international “D” pier. This is our largest terminal expansion since 1996 and, when complete in 2020, will offer new gates and amenities—as well as a new central west coast island feature. We’ll have more information on this expansion soon, so stay tuned! During this busy year, we will strive to minimize disruptions while delivering an efficient and comfortable airport for everyone. This is a big task, but our team is up for the challenge. So, I would like to thank you, in advance, for your ongoing support. We look forward to another great year as B.C.’s airport—full of people, projects and success.

The YVR Chapel had a memorable December and early January, with mounds of delicious goodies and 19 gallons of apple cider served to hundreds of airport employees during the popular annual Holiday Drop-In event. Chaplain Dennis Kirkley was grateful to all the volunteers who decorated, shopped, baked goodies and then welcomed and befriended passengers and airport employees who entered their doors. The volunteers were especially happy to interact with 35 employees who came to the Chapel for the first time. Chaplain Dennis and several associate chaplains also visited the offices of almost every YVR airline partner and most of the pre-security retail stores, distributing chocolates

and invitations to the Drop-In to receptive employees. Fundraiser Results Concurrent with its Holiday Drop-In, visitors to the Chapel were offered the opportunity to give $10 towards daily operation costs. The names of everyone who donated were entered for a Fundraiser Prize Draw to win gifts that were provided by YVR stakeholders, WestJet Airlines, the Fairmont Vancouver Airport and Monk’s Grill. On December 21, David Hamilton (WestJet), Lesliann Kuhn (Fairmont Vancouver Airport) and Damon Wong (Monk’s Grill), drew the winning names. Prize winners were: • Jon Henderson, two WestJet Airline tickets

• Jason Humeniuk, a Fairmont Vancouver Airport guest package • Hok Soh, gift certificate to Monk’s Grill The Chapel also received more than $2,000 in donations for its work and mission and Chaplain Dennis was extremely grateful to all those who provided a donation. Open 24 hours daily, with volunteers onsite from 9am to 7pm, the YVR Chapel is an interfaith organization that functions to serve and minister to the personal, social and spiritual needs of the travelling public and airline/airport employees at YVR. Located at Arrivals Level 2, International Terminal, all visitors are welcome.

Starting in Summer 2019, Air Canada will replace plastic with wood stir sticks in drinks served on all flights, a move that will save 35-million plastic stir sticks annually—enough to join Halifax and Vancouver, if laid end-to-end. “Air Canada has made sustainability central to its decision-making and business processes, including acting responsibly with respect to the environment,” said Teresa Ehman, director of environmental affairs at Air Canada. “Through seemingly small measures such as eliminating plastic stir sticks, to major investments such as our $10-billion fleet modernization, we are making great strides in our ongoing sustainability programs, notably improving fuel efficiency by 43 per cent since 1990. “Air Transport World Magazine recognized the effectiveness of our environmental programs when it named Air Canada the 2018 Eco-Airline of the Year, citing our participation in the development and support of alternative fuels in Canada, and our innovative sustainability programs.” Air Canada’s stir stick replacement will be made of bamboo and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, which assures products come from responsible sources so that forests remain thriving environments for future generations. Air Canada’s ongoing plas-

tic reduction efforts also include researching and rethinking important decisions made at various stages of the supply chain. The airline is supporting this in partnership with University of Toronto graduate students in their final year of their Master of Science in Sustainability Management program. The students are working with Air Canada to identify alternatives to plastic use onboard the airline’s aircraft. Looking out to 2020, Air Canada has set environmental targets to reduce waste sent to landfills from offices, facilities and its Maple Leaf Lounges by 20 per cent, or just under the equivalent weight of two empty Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, and to recycle 50 per cent of approved items onboard. Waste reduction at Air Canada includes more than recycling paper and aluminum cans. For example, since 2016 Air Canada has partnered with Partners in Project Green to distribute lightly used duvets to

social service agencies that assist people in need and other duvets are donated to local kennels. To date more than 13,000 duvets have been donated, equivalent to more than 20,000 kilograms of material. Additionally, when Air Canada announced new uniforms in 2017, creative solutions were employed to reduce landfill waste. These included: • Donating employee uniform pieces to Brands for Canada, which had all Air Canada’s branding removed and offered the items to people reentering the workforce without the means to purchase new clothes. • Shredding and repurposing uniforms into stuffing for punching bags that were donated to community centres, converted into alternative items, such as automotive stuffing, or incinerating them to generate energy. Oneworld alliance unveils major benefits for customers The oneworld global airline alliance was launched on February 1, 1999 by founding members American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways and Qantas. Since then, the alliance has been joined by Finnair, Iberia, LATAM, Japan Airlines, Royal Jordanian, S7 Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qatar Airways, and SriLankan Airlines. Additionally, some 30 airlines linked to the alliance’s full members are oneworld affiliate members, offering its full range of services and benefits. Collectively, oneworld member airlines: • Serve 1,100 airports in 180 territories, with 14,000 daily departures • Carry almost 550-million passengers a year on a combined fleet of 3,500 aircraft • Generate US$135-billion annual total revenues • Have boarded a total of seven-billion customers—equiv-

alent to almost the entire current global population In celebration of its 20th anniversary, the CEOs of oneworld member airlines met earlier this month to unveil several new initiatives to make oneworld even more relevant to international travellers and its member airlines. Oneworld’s transformation will include: • A new oneworld digital platform that will, as it is progressively rolled out, provide seamless connectivity for customers flying on multisector, multi-airline journeys, via their preferred member airline’s mobile app or website, without having to download any additional app or enter more log-in credentials. • An increased level of alliance co-location projects at several key global airports, with plans to unveil the first oneworld-branded, developed and managed lounge this year

• A faster response to requests for alliance contracts, which currently generate US$1billion a year for member airlines. • A revised process for prospecting potential new members. • The alliance’s first new membership platform, oneworld connect—designed with

smaller, regional airlines in mind. • New brand positioning designed to encourage passengers to “Travel Bright”— complete with a new oneworld.com website. “In the two decades since oneworld was launched, the industry and consumer behaviours have changed funda-

mentally,” said Rob Gurney, oneworld CEO. “Most of our member airlines have undergone comprehensive restructuring. Some have merged. When oneworld first took off, hardly any airline offered online bookings. Smartphones were in the future. Social media did not exist. Airlines fares included everything. Low-cost carriers were in

their infancy. “Since then, global alliances have grown greatly in terms of membership but, to be frank, they have failed to keep pace with he changes that their members, the industry at large and the marketplace have experienced. At oneworld, we’re making up for that.” Oneworld member airlines offer special privileges and rewards for frequent flyers, including earning and redeeming miles and points across the entire alliance network. Top tier cardholders (Emerald and Sapphire) enjoy access to more than 650 airport lounges and are offered extra baggage allowances. The most regular travellers (Emerald) can also use fast-track security lanes at select airports. For information on flights oneworld member airlines from YVR—American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Japan Airlines, Qantas Airways—visit yvr.ca.

British Airways’ 100-year celebration to include a 747 with retro design As part of its 100-year birthday in 2019, British Airways will be painting a Boeing 747 in the much-admired design of its predecessor British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC). The livery from the airline’s 1964 – 1974 BOAC-era will adorn a B747, reg: G-BYGC. The aircraft will leave the paint shop in Dublin and arrive at Heathrow on February 18, before entering service the following day. This coincides with the 50th anniversary of the first Boeing 747 flight only a few days earlier. The BOAC 747 will be the first aircraft to receive a popular design from British Airways’ past with more details of further designs to be revealed in due course. Aircraft which receive the retro liveries will fly British Airways’ routes, showcasing some of the popular designs as part of the airline’s centenary celebrations. All new aircraft entering the fleet, including the A350, will continue to receive the airline’s current Union Jack flag design. “So many British Airways customers and colleagues have fond memories of our previous liveries, regularly sharing their photos from across the globe, so it’s incredibly exciting to be re-introducing this classic BOAC design,” said Alex Cruz, British Airways’ chairman and CEO. “Our history has shaped who we are today, so our centenary is the perfect moment to revisit our heritage and the U.K.’s avia-

tion landscape through this iconic livery.” The 747 has been deliberately chosen for the BOAC livery as it is a later variant of the same aircraft type that adorned the design when it was initially in operation. The BOAC livery will remain

on the Boeing 747 until it retires in 2023. By this time, British Airways will have retired the majority of its 747 fleet, replacing them with new state-of-theart long-haul aircraft. This fleet overhaul includes taking delivery of 18 A350s and

12 Boeing 787 Dreamliners in the next four years—which feature new cabins and are more environmentally efficient—as well as another 26 short-haul aircraft, all part of the airline’s 6.5-billion-pound investment over the next five years.

Special NASA guest to attend world’s largest gender diversity event The Sky’s No Limit - Girls Fly Too! is an annual, two-day event that is held by the non-profit Achieve Anything Foundation to inspire female future leaders in Aviation, Aerospace, Marine and Defence, as well as other high-tech STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields. This year’s event will be held March 9-10 at Abbotsford International Airport during the Week of International Women’s Day. Activities during the event are fun, hands-on and completely free to ensure that there are no barriers to participation. Last year, more than 20,000 people from Canada, the U.S. and beyond attended and 1,955 girls and women were able to experience their first flight in a small aircraft.

This year, NASA astronaut Heide Stefanyshyn-Piper will be a special guest. A NASA Mission Specialist and fixer of space stations with numerous special honours, and commendations to her credit, Stefanyshyn-Piper is also a 30-year veteran of the US Navy as Dive Officer, Salvage Officer, Engineering Duty Officer, Surface Warfare Officer and Underwater Ship Husbandry Operations Officer. Stefanyshyn-Piper was deeply immersed in a successful career with the US Navy when a colleague mentioned NASA’s plans to build a space station. Intrigued, she researched NASA’s plans for the Freedom project—which later evolved into the International Space Station— and concluded that her experience fixing ships underwater for the US Navy was very similar to

that of building a space station. During her subsequent 13-year career with NASA, Stefanyshyn-Piper logged more than 27 days and 15 hours in space. She flew on Mission STS115 on space shuttle Atlantis with Canadian astronaut Steven MacLean in 2006 and Mission STS-126 on space shuttle Endeavour in 2008. She also completed five space walks totaling 33 hours and 42 minutes of Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA) time. In addition to this special NASA guest, Canadian and US Military, cadets, RCMP, Canadian Coast Guard, Vancouver Police and various civilian entities are expected to join forces and bring aircraft and tactical assets for participants to explore. Boeing’s autonomous aircraft completes first flight Boeing’s autonomous passenger air vehicle (PAV) prototype completed a controlled takeoff, hover and landing during its first flight test last month. The test verified the vehicle’s autonomous functions and ground control systems and represents the latest milestone for Boeing. Boeing NeXt, which leads the company’s urban air mobility efforts, worked with Boeing subsidiary Aurora Flight Sciences to design and develop the electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. “In one year, we have progressed from a conceptual design to a flying prototype,” said Boeing chief technology officer Greg Hyslop. “Boeing’s expertise and innovation have been critical in developing aviation as the world’s safest and most efficient form of transportation, and we will continue to lead with a safe, innovative and responsible approach to new mobility solutions.” Future flights will test forward, wing-borne flight, as well as the transition phase between vertical and forward-flight modes. This transition phase is typically the most significant engineering challenge for any high-speed VTOL aircraft. Boeing NeXt is working with regulatory agencies and industry partners to lead the responsible introduction of a new mobility ecosystem and ensure a future where autonomous and piloted air vehicles safely co-exist.

tions reach as much as $24,000 per year.” In addition to financial support, Power To Be will be promoted through videos and other materials in Helijet’s terminals, and the organization’s graphics will be placed on Helijet courtesy vehicles and on one of Helijet’s S-76 passenger helicopters. Helijet will also provide occasional use of a smaller helicopter in its fleet for events and promotional activities. “Through this program, we hope to make our passengers aware of our enthusiastic support for this deserving group, and the good work they perform every year. We sincerely hope this will be helpful in attracting even more support for Power To Be,” said Sitnam. For more information about Helijet’s flights, please visit helijet.com.

Conference Board forecasts strong tourism growth in 2019 The number of overnight visits from both within Canada and international markets is projected to increase by two per cent in 2019, according to The Conference Board of Canada’s Travel Markets Outlook reports. While Canadian households are expected to face growing economic and financial challenges heading into 2019, domestic travel volumes are still projected to increase. According to the Conference Board’s travel intentions survey, a growing share of Canadian households’ plan to take a winter vacation and among those a slightly higher share plan to stay in Canada for their longestduration trip. Meanwhile, growth from the U.S. and overseas markets is expected to strengthen in 2019, as travel price inflation eases and a favourable exchange rate for many international markets remains. “Tourism activity in 2018 was weighed down by a number of factors, including rising travel prices, the weaker economic envi-

ronment and lack of major events like those that happened in 2017,” said Greg Hermus, associate director for The Conference Board of Canada’s Canadian Tourism Research Institute. “Fortunately, 2019 should see stronger growth in tourism activity thanks to more modest increases in travel prices and easing uncertainty surrounding trade negotiations.” The recently issued travel advisory for Canada from the Chinese government presents a downside risk to the tourism forecast. International markets represent the strongest growth prospects for overnight visits to the country and China is Canada’s second most important overseas market.

Vancouver Among the 10 Canadian cities covered in the Travel Markets Outlook: Metropolitan Focus, growth in overnight visits is expected to average between 1.6 per cent and 3.3 per cent this year, with Vancouver experiencing the strongest growth and the only city where tourism activity expands by more than 3 per cent. The projected robust economic growth in British Columbia and strong influx of tourists from overseas markets will continue to be the major sources of growth for tourism in Vancouver. The Conference Board identifies one potential challenge to future growth would be wildfires, which don’t directly impact Vancouver but leave a heavy lingering haze over the city and surrounding areas during fire season. In all, overnight visits are forecast to grow by 3.3 per cent this year. The Conference Board’s Travel Markets Outlook: National Focus provides a tourism forecast for each of the 10 provinces and Yukon. Its Travel Markets Outlook: Metropolitan Focus analyzes and provides a forecast for the tourism industry in Canada and in 10 metropolitan areas.

Greg McDougall inducted into Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame

Greg McDougall, founder and CEO of Harbour Air Seaplanes.

On May 16, 2019, Greg McDougall, founder and CEO of the Harbour Air Group and Harbour Air Seaplanes, will be one of two B.C.-based industry leaders to be inducted into Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame. The 2019 inductions will be the 46th annual celebration of Canadian aviation accomplishments and will bring to 237 the number of Canadians who have been installed as Members of the Hall. In addition, 23 organizations have been honoured for their contributions, receiving the Belt of Orion Award of Excellence. “It’s an incredible honour,” said Greg McDougall, founder and CEO of Harbour Air Seaplanes. “I am extremely proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish as an airline and how our efforts have contributed to a number of innovations and enhanced safety standards in our

industry.” Starting out with two planes servicing the forestry industry, Harbour Air has grown into one of the largest all-seaplane airlines in the world and now plays a vital part in B.C.’s transportation infrastructure. With more than 450 staff and transporting more than 500,000 passengers each year, Harbour Air is internationally renowned for its business model and offers consulting services to airlines around the world, including the UK, USA and China. In 2007, Harbour Air was the first airline in North America to become completely carbon neutral, an achievement it continues to this day. “I think we recognized early on that in order for us to make seaplane travel a sophisticated air transportation option we had to change the stereotypical, bushplane culture of the West Coast and elevate safety standards to

that of a professional airline,” said McDougall. “Our steadfast focus on safety, innovation and service was the breakthrough of our operation and certainly its ongoing success.” Born in 1955 in Santa Barbara, California, McDougall made annual family trips to his family’s remote cabin in B.C., which sparked his desire to return to the coast and begin flying commercially. In 1982, during an economic downturn, when the company he was working for began to struggle, McDougall decided to lease back the aircraft, co-founding Harbour Air. Over the next 35-plus years, Harbour Air grew, offering scenic tours, private flights and scheduled service across 12 destinations, including its first international service between downtown Seattle and downtown Vancouver, which launched in Spring 2018.

Female-lead Super Hero Captain Marvel takes to the skies with Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines and Marvel Studios team up to release special edition plane.

Ahead of the release of Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel on March 8, International Women’s Day, Alaska Airlines debuted a special-edition plane, featuring Marvel Studios first female Super Hero lead, earlier this month. Decked out in a red-and-navy suit, Captain Marvel is taking

flight and commands the attention she deserves as a female pilot who acquired special powers to fight for the greater good. “This new plane featuring Captain Marvel will delight guests of all ages,” said Natalie Bowman, Alaska Airlines’ managing director of marketing and advertising. “We’re excited to

showcase a pilot who’s risen to Super Hero status––an image that embodies strength and confidence and inspires future aviators across our expansive network to go further.” The Captain Marvel-themed 737-800, tail number N531AS, has begun flying throughout Alaska’s route network.

Boeing’s iconic humpbacked 747 turns 50 One of the world’s most recognizable aircraft, Boeing’s 747, debuted at the end of what is known as the golden age of flight when travel was glamourous, and most flights catered to an elite clientele. On September 30, 1968, the first 747 was rolled out of Boeing’s Everett assembly building before the world’s press and representatives of the 26 airlines that had ordered the airliner. Over the following months preparations were made for the first flight, which took place on February 9, 1969. Boeing designed the 747’s hump-like upper deck to serve as a first–class lounge or extra seating and to allow the aircraft to be

easily converted to a cargo carrier by removing seats and installing a front cargo door. Just to produce the 747, Boeing first had to erect what was and still is the largest building by volume ever constructed—large enough to hold 75 football fields. During its reign as “Queen of the Skies,” the mighty 747 became the world’s most recognized aircraft. While most commercial airliners have decommissioned their 747 aircraft, they will continue to be seen flying as freighters—UPS purchased 14 747-8F freighter aircraft in 2016, making it the largest operator of the 747-8 worldwide.

The Everett, Washington factory where the 747 is built is still the biggest building in the world by volume.

Boeing President and Bill Allen and Pan Am CEO Juan Trippe (right) celebrated the launch of the Boeing 747 “Jumbo Jet” in 1968. The long-time friends sealed the deal on selling the airplanes to Pan Am with a handshake while on a fishing trip.

The 747 was known not just admired for its technological achievements, but also for its glamour. With a lounge, cocktail service and sometimes even a piano, it held the promise of an elegant, relaxing travel experience. YOU R AIRP

Canadian government warns of trafficking scams targeting senior travellers

AVIATION SERVICES DELIVERED WITH PASSION AND AGILITY The largest Canadian-owned, ground-handling company in the world, Strategic Aviation is an emerging company offering a rapidly-broadening range of passenger, cargo and ground support services to Canadian businesses centered around aviation. Our focus on customer service, superior product delivery and sound business partnerships means that we can turn on a dime, and provide what our customers need—on time, every time.

The Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the Government of Canada have issued a warning to Canadian seniors travelling abroad, who are being increasingly targeted to act as unwitting drug couriers. Foreign drug trafficking organizations prey on seniors with promises of romance, large sums of money or business opportunities with travel and expenses paid. Using various means such as phishing email messages, websites, mail and phone calls, unsuspecting senior citizens are tricked into establishing a relationship with the scammers, which can result in unknowingly transporting illegal narcotics. Awareness is the best defence. Be suspicious of any unsolicited emails, letters or phone calls for travel or moneymaking opportunities that sound too good to be true. If you are unfamiliar with the person or group contacting you or if you have any doubts, you should carefully research available information before conducting a transaction, agreeing to travel or giving any personal details such as passport information. The scam operates as follow: • The criminal organizations begin by contacting seniors, usually online, and offering various financial opportunities, or romantic relationships. • They invest a lot of time developing close relationships with them through frequent communication. • Some known scams include International Monetary Fund scams, United Nations scams, inheritance scams, foreign beneficiary scams, etc. • At some point, the organization will require the victim to travel to destinations such as Africa, South America or Asia in order to receive the

promised financial rewards. • During these trips, the victims may be asked to take seemingly harmless items along with them for contacts in another country that they are being directed to travel to or back home to Canada. • Upon arrival and inspection, these items are found to contain drugs, such as heroin or cocaine, resulting in detention and arrest by local authorities. • The drugs are often concealed, for example, in the false sides of luggage, clothing, chocolates, candies, canned goods, boxes of tea, picture frames and toiletries. • Even when the victims are warned by law enforcement, family or friends they tend to remain loyal to the organization and may follow through with travel in return for promises of financial gain. • Many of the elderly victims are travelling to, or transiting through, countries that have severe penalties for drug smuggling (life in prison or even death) whether the individual is aware they are carrying narcotics or not. • If you are found transporting narcotics you may face arrest, criminal charges and a conviction for drug smuggling. The fact that you didn’t know will not necessarily exonerate you of responsibility for what you possess in your luggage. • If you are a victim or believe you have been targeted by one of these criminal organizations, report the incident to your local law inforcement and contact the Canadian AntiFranud Centre toll free at 1-888-495-8501. You can also contact the Canada Border Watch Tip line: 1-888-502-9060; Monday to Friday 9am to 9pm EST.

The new Minoru Centre for Active Living, located at the southwest corner of the Minoru Civic Precinct, is expected to open to the public on Monday, March 11, subject to receipt of final occupancy. An official grand opening of the facility will be held in early April. The new $79-million complex is designed to meet the needs of Richmond’s growing and evolving population. A seniors’ centre within the facility will provide expanded service for the fastest growing segment of Richmond’s population. Built over two storeys, the seniors’ centre will provide double the program space of the existing Minoru Place Activity Centre. The Minoru Seniors Society will provide a comprehensive and expanded range of programs and services through the new facility. With six bodies of water, including Canada’s largest hot tub, the aquatics centre in the new facility will provide 60 per cent more surface water area than the current Minoru Aquatic Centre.

The new facility also includes a 789-square-metre fitness centre, sport programming and support space, full service cafeteria and bistro, commercial kitchen, three new outdoor public plazas and two public art installations. Existing registered programs and services at Minoru Aquatic Centre and Minoru Place Activity Centre will transition to the new facility when it opens. Registration for new programs to be offered at Minoru Centre for Active Living will be available through the City’s website at richmond.ca/register, starting online February 12, 2019 at 8 pm for Aquatic programs and 10pm for Senior and Fitness programs. Further details on the opening of the Minoru Centre for Active Living and details on the official grand opening will be announced soon. A new Minoru Centre for Active Living website will also be launched. In the interim, more details on the facility are available at the project website at yourminoru.ca.
