To commemorate the first anniversary of the Musqueam Indian Band – YVR Airport Sustainability and Friendship Agreement, a design competition for Musqueam youth and established artists was launched at YVR. The competition sought an approach that captured the strong YVR-Musqueam relationship, with its shared interests and mutual respect, while tying into YVR’s awardwinning Sense of Place. After much deliberation by a selection committee, composed of representatives from YVR and Musqueam, the competition winners announced were Thomas Cannell and his daughter Summer, who submitted their first joint design.

Thomas and Summer’s winning design, which will be unveiled in the coming weeks, draws on the Musqueam teaching of raising open hands to give thanks and offer a friendly greeting. “It symbolizes the opening of hearts and minds, showing both strength and vulnerability,” noted Thomas and Summer. “The design is a timeless story, meant to invoke feelings of a joyful friendship between Musqueam and YVR for years to come.” While Thomas and Summer took first place, the selection committee was very impressed by everyone’s submissions—so much so that awards were provided to each artist and YVR will be looking

into opportunities to display their designs in the future. A big congratulations to Sandra Fossella (and younger cousin Felecia Stogan); Chrystal Sparrow (and younger brother Samson Sparrow); and Joseph Campbell (with grandson Darnell Campbell).

Chinese New Year, a time of celebration at YVR

The design competition is one of many benefits in the YVR-Musqueam agreement, which seeks to foster the longterm sustainability of YVR through cooperation with the Musqueam people. In addition to providing jobs, scholarships and revenue-

sharing, the agreement creates an environment that encourages shared cultural experiences and initiatives. Throughout 2019, YVR will work on a range of initiatives under the agreement. This includes the full roll-out of the winning design.

The Year of the Pig was ushered in on February 5 and to celebrate in style, YVR partnered with LunarFest, Canada’s premier presenter of contemporary expression in Asian arts and culture. From now until February 13, visitors to YVR will find plenty of ways within the YVR terminal to commemorate this auspicious occasion, including creative pop-ups, shopping deals and beautiful festive décor. Weekdays at The Spirit of Haida Gwaii: The Jade Canoe and different locations postsecurity, YVR is giving passengers the opportunity to create and decorate their very own Chinese New Year lanterns to celebrate the Year of the Pig. Passengers may choose to take their lanterns with them on their travels or have them adorn various archways around the terminal for all to see.

Construction is wrapping up on YVR’s new jetSet YVR Parking product. The existing jetSet Parking is being improved to provide customers with an ultra-efficient service. jetSet YVR Parking will remain in its current location on North Service Road, minutes from the terminal, with complimentary YVR shuttle bus service available. Starting next month, customers will enter the new facility and drop off their vehicle in a designated drop-off lane. From there, customers will take their baggage into the customer service building, where they will check in and drop off their keys before a five-minute bus ride to the terminal. This drop-and-go service is popular throughout Europe

and YVR is the first to bring this technology and approach to North America. The entire process from entering the parking facility to arriving at the terminal will take about 15 minutes. YVR is experiencing record passenger growth, with current terminal facilities nearing capacity. Several multiyear expansion projects are taking place in order to meet future demand. The new jetSet YVR Parking product will enhance the current parking services offered at YVR and complement the existing options: Gateway Valet, Parkade and Value Long Term.
