Last year, YVR sponsored a litter of puppies, Amelia, Orville and Wilbur, that are each being raised and trained to be assistance dogs for someone with a physical disability or who may be deaf or hard-of-hearing. On February 21, Amelia, Orville and Wilbur’s first birthday was celebrated at YVR. Alongside some of their other four-legged friends, YVR feted the progress and achievements of these special puppies on the path to becoming assistance dogs. During their first year of train-

ing, Amelia, Orville and Wilbur were busy and working hard on the following: • Becoming socialized to a wide variety of environments including grocery stores, movie theatres, airports, transit, etc. • Learning basic obedience (sit, stand, loose leash walking, down, etc.), as well as durations—learning to hold those cues for longer and longer periods of time. March Construction Update

Several key ongoing projects are currently taking place at YVR that will enhance the airport experience for everyone. This includes YVR’s biggest sustainability projects to date, new parking options, terminal expan-

sions and much more. Terminal • There will be various improvements to a section of Pier B, in the Domestic terminal. As part of this work, there will be hoarding and

They have learned so much in such a short time and the airport community is proud of their hard work. As part of its Community Investment program, YVR invests more than one-

phased closures of two passenger hold rooms. Work is anticipated to be complete by June 2019.

may include noisy work. Given that there are 24-hour operations in this part of the

terminal, it is understood that this could potentially be disruptive for those with flights at nearby gates. Travellers

who may be looking for somewhere quiet can find

seating in the creek area, near

the food court. • There may be intermittent noise at U.S. check-in, U.S. pre-board screening area as well as U.S. Customs during daytime hours. This work is being done to improve

the processes for transfer passengers. In and Around Sea Island • Various work is continuing in the old Value Lot (adjacent to the Parkade) for the construction of a new six-storey parking lot and Central Utilities Building. A new toll plaza is now open and is the first permanent structure of the new Parkade. Please follow all directional signage in the area. There are also several related projects near by the site including: • Work that is taking place outside International Arrivals on level 2 in Chester Johnson Park. In order to facilitate the work, a section of the park is now closed. The pet relief area and Japadog will remain in the current location. • Preparatory work, which has started outside the Domestic

Terminal Building on level 1. There will be timed road closures, with access limited on a rotating basis. The area remains open and vehicle traffic will not be stopped for more than 10 minutes. The hours of work will be 10pm6am and expected to be complete by the end of March. • A period of significant excavation from the project site has begun. In line with YVR’s commitment to sustainability and construction waste diversion, the valuable earthworks materials will be transported to an unused parcel of land south of the BCIT campus on Russ Baker Way. While there are no current plans to develop this site, this is an opportunity to re-use and recycle valuable materials to prepare the land for potential future development. This waste diversion project

is expected to prevent more than 215,000 cubic metres of soil from landfill this year alone. • Construction is underway to prepare for Phase II of the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport. This phase is scheduled to open in Summer 2019 and will deliver more than 7,800 square metres of additional retail space. Parking • A section of McDonald Road is closed for construction traffic only. This work is part of the project to extend the east apron for Remote Stand Operations. Please follow all directional signage to the new McDonald Road, located east of North Service Place. Vancouver Airport Authority, one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers and one of BC’s Top Employers Vancouver Airport Authority, the organization that manages Vancouver International Airport (YVR), has been recognized as one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers in addition to one of BC’s Top Employers. This is the second year that Vancouver Airport Authority has been recognized as Best Diversity Employer and the 13th consecutive year it has made the list as BC’s Top Employer. “We are honoured to once again be named as one of the leading employers in the province and one of the Best Diversity Employers in Canada,” said Craig Richmond, President & CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “At Vancouver Airport Authority, we are committed to creating a workplace environment that not only promotes diversity and inclusivity, but also offers employees a range of competitive benefits to attract and retain top talent.” Canada’s Best Diversity Employers recognizes employers across the country that deliver exceptional workplace diversity and inclusiveness program. As part of the organization’s commitment to employment equity, Vancouver Airport Authority identifies occupational gaps in the workforce and the Executive Team sets specific hiring targets for the four designated groups—women, Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities

and members of visible minorities, which exceed employment equity targets. ”Our unique operating model as a community-focused, financially independent organization allows us to place an emphasis on diversity and inclusion in the workplace,” said Richmond. “With a broad range of perspectives on our team, we’re better able to serve everyone, through universal access terminal design, inclusive hiring practices and a culture that promotes respect and equality.” Vancouver Airport Authority has a dedicated Employment Equity and Diversity committee, mandated to provide feedback and support on the implementation of Employment Equity programs. Employees also receive extensive training on diversity and respect in the workplace. In 2018, the Employment Equity and Diversity team led a variety of initiatives, including events for Canada’s National AccessAbility week, National Indigenous History Month and Diversity Awareness Month.

The airport’s passenger growth is fuelled by expanded services from its airline partners, including significant continued growth from Air Canada who has chosen YVR as its premier transPacific hub. In 2018, Air Canada introduced new flights to 10 destinations, including Paris and Zurich and increased service on five existing routes, including making its popular non-stop service to Delhi year-round. New services such as these are made possible by YVR’s rates and charges program, ConnectYVR. The program provides a highly competitive rate structure and includes rates lower than any other major airport in Canada and competing U.S. airports. YVR is on track to serve more than 29-million passengers in 2020, with projections indicating the airport will serve 32-million by 2022. To facilitate recent and projected growth, YVR is investing $9.1-billion in its expansion pro-

gram, which includes 75 major capital improvement projects scheduled over the next 20 years. Once complete, the expansion will enhance the airport experience, improve the speed and ease of passenger and bag movements, and further YVR’s position as a leading international hub. YVR’s multi-year expansion plans are made possible by its unique, not-for-profit operating model, which ensures all profits generated at YVR are reinvested back into the airport for the benefit of its customers, partners and communities. Passenger Growth Highlights: January – December 2018 • 25.9-million passengers, a 7.3 per cent increase over the same period in 2017 • An 8.5 per cent increase in international traffic • A 6.1 per cent increase in domestic traffic • A 5.5 per cent increase in transborder (US) traffic • YVR moved 338,000 tonnes of cargo, an 8.1 per cent increase from 2017.

essential brand Relay, as well as three Vancouver-inspired travel essentials concepts. Accompanying Relay will be a full-service illy Café, which will feature a wide variety of authentic Italian coffee, pastries and other on-the-go treats. As one of North America’s leading hubs, YVR provides convenient connections to destinations in Canada, the United States, Asia, Europe and the Americas and has received the Skytrax award for Best Airport in North America for a record nine years in a row.

Founded in British Columbia in 1982 and headquartered at YVR South, Harbour Air provides a vital transportation link along coastal British Columbia, servicing an average of 400,000 passengers per year. Harbour Air’s showcase fleet of Canadian-built DeHavilland Beaver, Single Otter and Twin Otter aircraft are envied worldwide for their history, craftmanship, safety record and workload capability.

In Spring 2018, Harbour Air added a new Cessna Caravan EX to its fleet to service routes to downtown Seattle and Tofino. The Caravan EX is unique as it is the first one ever to operate solely on floats. On select weekends this month, Harbour Air is offering special prices on flights between YVR South to Victoria and Nanaimo destinations. For more information, visit harbourair.com.

Government strengthens seaplane regulations The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, has announced changes to the Canadian Aviation Regulations that are designed to enhance safety for seaplane passengers and crew. Seaplanes offer a unique and convenient way to explore Canada’s landscape and provide a vital lifeline into remote corners of Canada’s North during the summer months. The changes require: • Passengers and crew of commercial seaplanes with nine passengers or less to wear an inflatable flotation device while the aircraft operates on or over water. In seaplanes with 10 to 19 passengers, flotation devices will continue to be required onboard for all occupants; however, occupants will not be required to wear the flotation device. • Mandatory training for all pilots of commercial seaplanes on how to exit an aircraft under water. The changes to the Canadian Aviation Regulations respond to

recommendations made by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada. “Our Government understands how important a safe and reliable seaplane industry is to the economic and social development of Canada’s coastal and northern communities,” said Minister Garneau. “By mandating that passengers wear personal flotation devices while on or above water, and by strengthening requirements for underwater exit training for pilots, we’re enhancing safety for thousands of Canadians and tourists who rely on seaplanes for their personal and business travel needs.” Commercial seaplane operators have until September 2020 to implement the new rules requiring passengers to wear personal flotation devices while on or above water. The pilot exit training must be implemented by 2022.

Franz Zeno Diemer before setting his altitude world record in 1919.

This month, BMW celebrates 103 years since its founding. During this period, a small aeroengine factory transformed itself into the world’s leading premium manufacturer of automobiles and motorcycles. BMW’s first achievement was a high-altitude flight performed 100 years ago when on June 17, 1919, the experienced test pilot Franz Zeno Diemer set out to help the fledgling company achieve a first world record. Diemer took off from Munich’s Oberwiesenfeld airfield piloting his aeroplane manufactured by Deutsche Flugzeugwerke and powered by the BMW IV aero-engine on the route to the record attempt. The design of the 230-horsepower engine was based on a principle conceived especially for flying at great altitudes. Diemer took around one and a half hours to fly his machine

up to an altitude of 9,760 metres. In the open cockpit, he had to contend with temperatures down to minus 50 degrees and breathe in air with gradually diminishing oxygen levels. Never had an aircraft flown so high. Now known for producing luxury automobiles, BMW’s logo references the company’s airline roots. Inspired from the circular design of a rotating aircraft propeller, the white and blue checker boxes are supposed to be a stylized representation of a white/ silver propeller blade spinning against a clear blue sky.

Air France, KLM and Virgin Atlantic agree to codeshare partnership Air France, KLM and Virgin Atlantic have announced their first codeshare agreement— creating new transatlantic travel options to and from North America and allowing more opportunities for passengers on these airlines to earn frequent flyer miles and redeem them via their own airline loyalty scheme. The codeshare partnership also allows customers to enjoy seamless connections through a single booking reference. Customers from Vancouver on Air France and KLM-operated flights can access routes to the

UK on flights via Charles de Gaulle Airport, Paris, France; and Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, respectively. Air France, KLM and Virgin Atlantic are set to form an expanded joint venture with Delta later in 2019. Subject to final clearance from regulators, the airlines will be founding members of a $13-billion transatlantic partnership for customers between the UK, Europe and North America, offering more than 300 daily transatlantic flights, 108 non-stop routes, and more than 340 destinations.

British Airways picks Boeing’s 777 to modernize much of its long-haul fleet

Supersonic Concorde now part of the history books

British Airways has agreed to purchase up to 42 Boeing 777 airplanes, valued at up to $18.6-billion. The airline joins a group of leading carriers that have selected the new 777-9, which will debut next month as the largest and most efficient twin-engine passenger jet in the world. British Airways has been modernizing its fleet—one of the largest in the airline industry—to more efficiently serve its extensive global route network.

In recent years, the airline has introduced the super-efficient 787 Dreamliner family to replace its medium-sized widebody jets. The new 777-9 will replace British Airways’ larger widebody airplanes, mainly the four-engine 747 jumbo jet. In ordering the 777-9, British Airways extends a long-running relationship with Boeing’s 777 family of aircraft. The airline is one of the largest 777 operators with a fleet of nearly 60 of the long-range jet. The airline

last year committed to four more 777-300ER (Extended Range) jets via operating lease. The 777-9 is larger and has a slightly wider cabin than current 777s, which seat 400-425 passengers in a standard two-class cabin. Powered by 787 Dreamliner technologies, an all-new composite wing, and other enhancements, the 777-9 offers airlines 12 per cent lower fuel consumption than competing airplanes. The 777-9 can also fly farther than its predecessors with a standard range of 14,075 kilometres. It will also debut a redesigned cabin that incorporates popular 787 features and new technologies. Recently unveiled online, the interior offers larger windows, a wider cabin, new lighting, while providing passengers with a smoother ride, better cabin altitude, humidity, and sound quality. Production began in 2017, with first flight planned for this year and first delivery expected in 2020.

On March 2, 1969, the first Concorde supersonic commercial aircraft took flight from Toulouse, France. The first major cooperative venture between Britain and France to build an aircraft, Concorde was lauded in its day as a technological achievement. Concorde was the prestige flagship of British Airways and Air France, with flights offered on both airlines’ transatlantic routes. With a take off speed of 402 kilometres and a cruising speed of 2,179 kilometres—more than twice the speed of sound—a typical London to New York crossing took a little less than three and a half hours as opposed to about eight hours for a subsonic flight. Concorde’s fastest transatlantic crossing was on February 7, 1996 when it completed a New York to London flight in 2 hours 52 minutes and 59 seconds. In November 1986 a British Airways Concorde flew around the world, covering more than 45,000 kilometres in 29 hours, 59 minutes. Concorde used the most powerful pure jet engines flying commercially. The aircraft’s four engines took advantage of what is known as ‘reheat’ technology,

adding fuel to the final stage of the engine, which produced the extra power required for take-off and the transition to supersonic flight. Concorde measured slightly more than 62 metres in length and stretched between 15 and 25 centimetres in flight due to heating of the airframe. It was painted in a specially developed white

paint to accommodate these changes and to dissipate the heat generated by supersonic flight. Despite its technological acclaim, the aircraft proved to be an economic disaster as the noise of its engines and operating costs limited its service. Only 14 Concorde aircraft went into service, with the last being retired in 2003.

Airbus to scrap production of superjumbo A380

A380 prototype on its maiden flight.

Airbus will cease production of its superjumbo A380 as a result of dwindling orders and a recent decision by Emirates, the Dubai-based airline and largest A380 customer, to cut its order from 162 to 123 aircraft. As a result of the decision by Emirates, and given the lack of backlog orders with other airlines, Airbus will cease deliveries of the A380 in 2021. According to Airbus chief executive Tom Enders, the order cut by Emirates, together with

“no substantial A380 backlog” made continued production of the A380 unsustainable. The spacious jet, which had its first commercial flight in 2007 with launch customer Singapore Airlines, was hailed as a technological marvel that would meet the needs of airlines for large aircraft to connect the world’s largest airport hubs—London, New York, Dubai, Tokyo. The product of a multinational effort by France, Germany, the U.K. and Spain, the A380

proved expensive to build, partly because production was spread across various locations. As of 2016, the list prices of an A380 was US$432.6-million. In comparison, Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner, a long-haul, widebody, twin-engine jet airliner, cites a list price of US239-million. “What we’re seeing here is the end of the large, four-engine aircraft,” said Enders. The future success of Airbus now very much depends on its new generation of aircraft.

Qantas Group CEO (4th from left) will be asking help from staff, customers, suppliers and regulators to achieve the airline’s goal to slash 75 per cent of its landfill waste by the end of 2021.

The Qantas Group has announced an ambitious plan to become the world’s first airline to reuse, recycle and compost at least three-quarters of its general waste by the end of 2021. Announcing the plan, Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said that business had a responsibility to lead on environmental issues. “In the process of carrying 50-million people each year, we deal with more than 30,000 tonnes of waste. That’s the same weight as about eighty 747 jumbos,” said Joyce. “It is quite literally a waste and we have a responsibility to our customers, shareholders and the community to reduce it. We’ve already removed plastic wrapping on our pyjamas and headsets, as well as plastic straws. Even plastic Frequent Flyer cards are going digital. It adds up to millions of items a year because of our scale and there’s a lot more we can do.” Some examples of changes to be implemented across Qantas and its affiliates QantasLink and Jetstar from later this year

Now Hiring

include: • Introducing coffee cups that can be recycled or composted • Effectively eliminating single-use plastics by switching to alternative packaging • Removing unnecessary paper, such as boarding passes and operational manuals, by going digital • Increasing donation or composting of food • Recycling of old uniforms In targeting the removal of 100-million single-use plastic items per annum, the Qantas Group will replace 45-million plastic cups, 30-million cutlery sets, 21-million coffee cups and 4-million headrest covers with sustainable alternatives by end-2020. This list of items goes well beyond the recent European Union ban, both in scope and speed of implementation. The Group has an existing target to reduce waste to landfill by 30 per cent by 2020, which it is on track to reach through recycling and other programs. The 75 per cent goal now takes its place. Separate targets exist for fuel,

water and electricity consumption, and Qantas has the largest carbon offset scheme of any airline in the world. Airlines are legally required to dispose of some materials permanently, such as quarantined food from international flights and hazardous materials. With support from industry and regulators, the Group believes it can ultimately reduce the volume of this regulated waste as well. Similarly, there are some single use plastics used by airlines (such as wrapping for hygiene purposes and some heatresistant containers for meal preparation) that don’t currently have a practical alternative. As part of its broader approach to sustainability, the Qantas Group enables customers to fly carbon neutral when booking through qantas.com. From mid-2019, customers will earn 10 points for every dollar spent offsetting their travel on QF marketed flights. Qantas and Jetstar are also working with manufacturers and other airlines to innovate and further reduce waste to landfill.

long-term partnership is designed to raise public awareness about Canada’s dynamic aviation and space industry. Rooted in discovery and innovation, the sector requires new talent to design, develop, deploy, and maintain sophisticated air traffic management technologies, in order to keep Canada’s skies safe for the future.

“With Canadian air traffic on the rise, there is a growing demand for skilled professionals in our industry,” said Neil Wilson, president and CEO of NAV Canada. “These are incredibly rewarding jobs; helping people of all ages and backgrounds learn about careers in aviation will bring tremendous benefits to the future of air travel in Canada.

The new exhibition will offer a window into our industry; it will honour the men and women who make Canada’s air navigation service the safest in the world, while offering inspiration for some to become part of Canada’s future aviation story.” To foster the next generation of industry leaders, innovators, and employees, the museum and NAV Canada are working together with national industry, government, and academic partners from the Aero/Space Network to engage directly with youth through special events such as Fly to the Future. “Workers in the aviation and space sector play a critical role in the past, present, and future of our aerospace industry, which touches the lives of all Canadians,” said Christina Tessier, president and CEO of Ingenium. “Through highquality educational programming developed through this partnership with NAV Canada,

we hope to share the important history of this work and inspire a new generation of leaders that can make their mark on the industry.” Currently under development, the interactive exhibition at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum will engage visitors by showcasing the history of air traffic control, today’s advanced technology and innovations, the many faces behind Canada’s air navigation system, and a glimpse at where the industry is headed. A travelling exhibition, featuring similar artifacts and information, will take a cross-country tour to other museums and public venues across Canada. Both are scheduled to be unveiled in 2020. NAV Canada is internationally recognized for its safety record, and technology innovation. Its air traffic management systems are used by air navigation service providers in countries worldwide.

security of the border by collecting physical characteristics of an individual which when captured, can be used to verify the identity or check against other entities in the database. Biometrics also help airports by reducing passenger wait times, improving passenger flow and operational efficiency. More than 70 countries around the world use the collection of biometrics as part of their immigration programs. “As countries look for solutions to best handle passenger processing amidst increased traffic flow, they are placing increased importance on modernizing border management through biometrics,” said Hankinson. “Each country has its own immigration requirements and BorderXpress can be configured to meet those specific needs—not only with respect to air travel, but also sea and rail travel, where border management is also critically important.” BorderXpress kiosks use an efficient two-step process to expedite the border clearance process, reducing passenger wait times by more than 60 per cent. This results in cost and space savings and allows border officers to focus on maintaining the safety of the border. BorderXpress provides better exception handling, is fully accessible to persons with disabilities, and can be configured with up to 35 different languages. It can process any passenger, including families travelling as a group. BorderXpress technology was developed by ITS, an independent business unit within YVR. Innovative Travel Solutions (ITS), Vancouver International Airport’s industry-leading selfservice border control solution, BorderXpress, is the first in Canada to be updated to meet the Government of Canada’s expanded biometric screening requirements, coming into effect March 31, 2019. Under this expansion, all primary inspection kiosks at major Canadian airports will require fingerprint verification for certain travellers. Primary inspection kiosks are biometric-enabled kiosks that automate the border clearance process. “The Government of Canada has stated that the collection of biometrics is a critical aspect of their immigration program and one that allows for accuracy in establishing a traveller’s identity,” says Steve Hankinson, vice president, innovation and planning, Vancouver Airport Authority. “Our BorderXpress primary inspection kiosks are the first to be adapted to accommodate the needs of the Canadian government, while also providing a border control solution that unites security, efficiency and innovation to transform the passenger experience, which is ultimately what drives our team forward.” Under the Government of Canada’s biometric expansion, primary inspection kiosks at major Canadian airports will now require fingerprint verification for all temporary resident visa, study and work permit applicants (excluding U.S. nationals), as well as all permanent residence applicants. In recognizing Air Canada, Mediacorp cited the airline’s ongoing work to foster inclusiveness through various partnerships, its success outreaching directly to diverse communities when recruiting and other initiatives. “We are very proud to be recognized for cultivating diversity and inclusion as these are important strengths for a global airline like Air Canada,” said Arielle Meloul-Wechsler, senior vice president, people, culture and communications at Air Canada. “By having a diverse and inclusive workforce, we can attract and retain the best talent and our customers and stakeholders also see themselves and their cultures reflected in our 30,000 employees. Our people work in more than +80 languages, and women occupy prominent roles

throughout our airline, from nontraditional roles to the C-suite.” In naming Air Canada, Mediacorp cited the airline’s inclusivity through partnerships including: • Indspire’s Indigenous scholarship and award program, providing financial support for Indigenous students completing their education in an aviation-related program such as pilot or aircraft mechanic; • a program with Jazz Aviation to create a partnership with First Nations Technical Institute to help young Aboriginal students become pilots -- the initiative includes guidance on resume and job interview preparation as well as site visits to flight simulators and flight operations; • Ready, Willing and Able to match the unique qualifications of candidates with intellectual disabilities or Autism Spectrum Disorder to specific roles -- the company also participates in Dolphin Digital Technologies’ disability mentoring day. Bombardier’s Global 7000 aircraft has completed the world’s longest-range business jet flight, a 13,119-kilometre nonstop journey. The business jet departed from Singapore Changi Airport at 7:12am local time and arrived at Tucson International Airport, Arizona, at 8:19am local time, completing the long-range speed record flight for the city-pair. “The Global 7500 aircraft was built to break all the records,” said David Coleal, president, Bombardier Business Aircraft. “It achieved the industry’s longest mission ever in business avia-

tion after only two months in service. We’ve demonstrated its unequaled long-range and high-speed capabilities, but also its ability to break records confidently with healthy fuel reserves remaining, once again, confirming its unsurpassed performance to customers.” The Global 7500 has a top speed of Mach 0.925, and has completed more than 170 hours of flights around the world. The aircraft also debuts Bombardier’s patented Nuage seat, which was designed for maximum comfort and is exclusive to Bombardier’s new Global family of aircraft.

The City of Richmond has submitted a ground-breaking and transformative final proposal for the Smart Cities Challenge. The Smart Cities Challenge is a national competition created by Infrastructure Canada that encourages communities to adopt a smart cities approach to improve the lives of their residents through innovation, data and connected technology. Developed by City staff teams, who worked alongside a variety of external partners from more than 25 government agencies and First Nations, business and community partners to prepare the City’s final submission, the City of Richmond’s proposal includes initiatives that would minimize community impacts from major disasters, while also enhancing our quality of life in day-to-day activities. Richmond is a finalist for one of two $10-million prizes in the competition. The City’s primary proposal is to create an Intelligent Operation Hub that will seamlessly integrate data and coordinate emergency response, while also enhancing day to day delivery of key

local services. The Intelligent Operations Hub will allow the City and its partners to better understand what is happening in the city in real time. The enhanced situational awareness will enable improved communication and data sharing that will drive critical decision making for both dayto-day service delivery and emergency response. In addition to enhanced emergency response and recovery, the proposal includes initiatives to improve traffic management, reducing collisions and congestion and to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Other benefits of the proposal will include real-time incident notifications; faster response times; safer streets; greater community resiliency; early incident detection; improved communication and way-finding and expanded on-demand e-services. Richmond’s final proposal and a supporting video are now available on the project website at smartcity.richmond.ca.

A new large-scale public artwork has been installed in front of the soon-to-open Minoru Centre for Active Living. The work by David Jacob Harder is called Together, and is composed of more than 300 silhouettes of local people and elements in steel combined to form the shape of an adult and child. Harder is a Canadian visual artist based in Wells, B.C. Born in Quesnel, he earned a B.F.A. in Visual Arts, as well as B.A. in Social History, from Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops. His work has been exhibited across Canada. In the process of creating the work, the artist sourced the metal shapes by photographing community members who currently use the Minoru Precinct facilities. Harder met with dozens of individuals at Minoru Place Activity Centre, Minoru Aquatic Centre and Minoru Park as they were involved in a wide variety of activities and through his photographs

Richmond residents are represented throughout the artwork. The Minoru Centre for Active Living will house an aquatic centre, seniors centre and amenities to support Minoru Park’s outdoor sports facilities. Located in the heart of the Minoru Civic Precinct, an area in central Richmond that is home to a range of community facilities and amenities, this innovative new complex represents the next step in the evolution of the precinct and a legacy for Richmond residents. The Seniors Centre and Events Centre at the new Minoru Centre for Active Living will open to the public at 7am on Monday, March 11. The aquatics and fitness centres within the facility will open later—date to be announced. For more information on the Minoru Centre for Active Living and updates on the opening, visit the facility’s website at minorucentre.ca.

Don’t drive snow and winter tires year round Many car owners own both summer (all season) and winter (snow) tires. If you are in this category be sure to switch them over as the seasons change. We recently serviced a 1987 Mercedes 190E on which the driver had failed to remove his winter tires at the appropriate time and had kept them on until August. The high mileage that occurred on the tires caused them to wear out. In fact, the tire treads

had the most unusual and severe cupped wear we had ever seen. After inspection, all steering and suspension components were found to be in good condition, as was the wheel alignment. This ruled out a problem with the vehicle itself causing the tire wear. Snow tires are made with very soft rubber and wear much faster than all-season tires. With

all the twists and turns and bumps encountered in everyday driving these tires started to wear unevenly and, coupled with leaving them on too long, accelerated their destruction. Had these snow tires been removed in April, which is appropriate in the Vancouver area, they would still be in good condition. Instead, the car owner will have to purchase two new tires for the next winter season.

While this occurred on an older Mercedes, this scenario plays out on many different types of cars and trucks. Drivers should be proactive—those who use winter and summer tires should change to winter tires in November and summer tires April. This is particularly recommended because mounting tires seasonally is much less expensive than purchasing new ones.

Porsche has announced that its next generation Porsche Macan will be fully electric. Production will begin early in the next decade and will take place in Leipzig, Germany at the same facility as the current Macan. The development represents an expansion in electromobility for Porsche. The Taycan – the first purely electrically driven sports car from

Porsche – will launch at the end of 2019, followed shortly by its derivative, the Taycan Cross Turismo. “Electromobility and Porsche go together perfectly; not just because they share a high-efficiency approach, but especially because of their sporty character,” said Oliver Blume, chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG. “By 2022 we will
