On March 8, 2019, International Women’s Day, Vancouver Airport Authority announced that Craig Richmond, president & CEO, had signed the Minerva BC Diversity Pledge, a public commitment to achieve gender parity in the workplace. With this pledge, Richmond joins CEOs from around the province that have also pledged to help support and empower women as leaders in their respective organizations. In 2015, Minerva BC, a registered
charity, released the Face of Leadership BC Score Card, a report measuring gender diversity amongst the largest companies in the province. The program has since expanded with additional initiatives designed to help narrow the gender gap, including the Minerva BC Diversity Pledge, an Inclusive Leadership Forum and Executive for a Day, where emerging leaders have a unique opportunity to spend a day with a CEO or senior leader. “On behalf of Vancouver Airport Authority, I am extremely proud to
sign the Minerva BC Diversity Pledge,” said Craig Richmond president & CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “As a community-focused, financially independent organization, we are committed to achieving gender equality at every level, and over the years we have introduced a broad range of diversity initiatives to help advance women in the workplace. By signing this pledge, we are taking a public stance on the gender equality movement, with other leading organizations in British Columbia, and
we look forward to supporting Minerva BC on their mission to change the face of leadership.” Vancouver Airport Authority continues to champion women in their career paths and to date, women account for more than 40 per cent of the management team, 60 per cent of the officers of the Executive Team and 50 per cent of the Board, including the Board Chair. YVR to host emergency training exercise Regular testing of YVR’s Emergency Management Plan and training response personnel are integral to the airport’s emergency preparedness program, which focuses on three principles: Prevent, Prepare and Practice. As such, emergency exercises are a key part of the Emergency Management Plan and are performed on a regular basis. On April 30, Vancouver Airport Authority will host one of these training exercises, which will be staged airside and in the terminal.
ABFM
Exercises will include emergency response vehicles arriving at a simulated aircraft crash site, exercise volunteers acting as worried family and friends throughout the terminal and airport and air carrier staff participants responding to them. Everyone participating in the exercise will be clearly identified with a vest, name tag or white YVR baseball cap. Signage regarding the exercise will also be posted throughout the airport. Airport operations will not be impacted by this exercise.

Construction at YVR: April update There are several key projects currently taking place that are designed to enhance the airport experience. This includes YVR’s biggest sustainability projects to date, new parking options, terminal expansions and much more. Terminal • There will be various improvements to a section of Pier B, in the Domestic terminal. As part of this work, there will be hoarding and phased closures of two passenger hold rooms. Work is anticipated to be complete by June 2019. • As part of the International Pier D expansion project, steel work continues. This will take place airside and may include noisy work. Given that there are 24-hour operations in this part of the terminal, it is understood that this could potentially be disruptive for those with flights at nearby gates. Travellers who may be looking for somewhere quiet will find seating in the creek area, near the food court. • There may be intermittent noise at U.S. check-in, U.S. pre-board screening area as well as U.S. Customs during daytime hours. This work is being done to improve the
airport’s processes for transfer passengers. In and around Sea Island • Various work is continuing in the old Value Lot (adjacent to the Parkade) for the construction of a new six-storey parking lot and Central Utilities Building. A new toll plaza is now open and is the first
permanent structure of the new Parkade. Please follow all directional signage in the area. There are also several related projects nearby the site including: • Work that is taking place outside International Arrivals on level 2 in Chester Johnson Park. Innovative Travel Solutions named as finalist for Vision to Reality Award The YVR team at Innovative Travel Solutions (ITS) has been named as a finalist in the 2019 PwC Vision to Reality (V2R) Awards in The Builder category for their BorderXpress kiosk solution. Innovative Travel Solutions is an independent business unit within YVR focused on delivering industry-leading travel technology that helps transform travellers’ experience. ITS’ BorderXpress is a self-service solution that automates the administrative functions of border control with a two-step process that makes border processing faster and more efficient, reducing passenger wait times by more than 60 per cent. This results in fewer missed connections and cost and space savings for airports. YVR’s unique, not-for-profit governance model supports innovation within the organization through independent business units like ITS. In turn, ventures such as ITS generate a great source of nonaeronautical revenue, which is reinvested back into the airport. Non-aeronautical revenue

also enables YVR to support the local community with annual donations of more than one-million dollars to community partners across the Lower Mainland. The V2R Awards is PwC Canada’s annual program aimed at recognizing and celebrating the most forward-thinking
organizations in the nation. The Builder award is given to the mid-market organization that best demonstrates a new idea that adds value to people, business or society. The winners for 2019 will be announced at a ceremony to be held on May 9.
First electric aircraft fleet could be Harbour Air’s seaplanes B.C.-based Harbour Air, North America’s largest seaplane airline, and magniX, a company powering the electric aviation revolution, have formed a partnership to transform Harbour Air’s seaplanes into an all-electric commercial fleet powered by the magni500, a 750-horsepower all-electric motor. Operating 12 routes between hubs such as Vancouver and Seattle and across the pristine natural wilderness of the Pacific Northwest, Harbour Air welcomes more than 500,000 passengers on 30,000 commercial flights each year. Through this partnership, both companies are furthering the vision to someday connect communities with clean, efficient and affordable electric air travel. “Harbour Air first demonstrated its commitment to sustainability by becoming the first fully carbon-neutral airline in North America in 2007, through the purchase of carbon offsets,” said Greg McDougall, founder and CEO of Harbour Air Seaplanes. “Through our commitment to making a positive impact on people’s lives, the communities where we operate and the environment, we are once again pushing the boundaries of aviation by becoming the first aircraft to be powered by electric propulsion.
We are excited to bring commercial electric aviation to the Pacific Northwest, turning our seaplanes into ePlanes.” The aviation industry currently contributes 12 per cent of all U.S. carbon emissions and 4.9 per cent globally, all while providing few low-cost, fuel-efficient options for passenger flights under 1,600 kilometres. By modifying existing Harbour Air planes with all-electric magniX propulsion systems, the partnership will create the world’s first completely electric commercial seaplane fleet. A Harbour Air ePlane will have zero reliance on fossil fuels and produce zero emissions—a significant step forward in the innovation and advancement of the airline industry. The first aircraft to be converted will be the DHC-2 de Havilland Beaver, a six-passenger commercial aircraft used across Harbour Air’s route network. Harbour Air and magniX expect to conduct first flight tests of the all-electric aircraft in late 2019. This partnership follows significant milestones for both companies, including the successful testing of magniX’s 350-horsepower all-electric motor and the addition of a Vancouver to Seattle
route in Harbour Air’s destination roster.
“We are delighted to welcome Vancouver Airport Authority to our community of committed leaders,” said Tina Strehlke, CEO of Minerva BC. “For 20 years Minerva BC has supported women and girls in developing their leadership capacity. Investing in women’s leadership development is critical. But we also need business leaders who are serious about breaking down implicit biases and replacing them with attitudes and systems that are supportive to women’s achievement.” Since 2014, the Airport Authority has sponsored the Women in Management program—an initiative that promotes and supports the advancement of women in the workplace. In previous years, YVR has hosted bi-annual meetings for the program on intercultural approaches to gender literacy and unconventional career paths for women. In 2017, the Airport Authority’s Women in Management program launched Women’s Development Circles, a series of group conversations targeting women in non-management roles. Women participate in discussions moderated by a woman in a senior leadership role and have an opportunity to explore a wide range of topics from work-life balance to tangible career advice.

CAC greets funding and screening reforms as positive for air travellers The Canadian Airports Council (CAC) has expressed approval of the Government of Canada’s commitment in Budget 2019 to invest in improving security screening at Canada’s airports for the coming government fiscal year. CAC, the voice for Canada’s airports, has sought permanent structural changes to how the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) is funded on an ongoing basis, requesting that CATSA be accountable to service standards and its funding more responsive to growing passenger volumes. In Budget 2019, the Federal Government pledged additional
funding for CATSA screening for this year and indicated it will introduce legislation to transition CATSA to an independent, notfor-profit entity. “Keeping people and goods moving is essential to business and trade flow,” said CAC president Daniel-Robert Gooch. “Air travellers deserve safe and comfortable journeys through Canada’s airports, and that means being able to go through security screening in a timely and professional manner. Canada’s airports have long called for structural reforms to normalize CATSA’s funding structure to ensure the organization is able to better plan long-term and serve the
needs of travellers well into the future. As is so often the case, there are many details to be worked out to ensure the transition to a new model is successful, and improves service to travellers, while maintaining the high security standards we have today.” Canada’s airports and major air carriers have sought a service level commitment for screening that would see 95 per cent of originating passengers at the eight largest airports screened in under 10 minutes, even quicker standards for connecting passengers and with no passenger waiting more than 20 minutes at any CATSA screening point.

Ian Stewart, president of the National Research Council of Canada and Grazia Vittadini, chief technology officer, Airbus.
A National Research Council of Canada (NRC) multidisciplinary team is studying human responses to the airline cabin environment and the impact of new design concepts and emerging technologies on air travellers and crew to understand how people interact with the controlled air travel environment. The NRC is in the third year of a five-year research collaboration with the Research and Technology team at Airbus Americas Engineering to improve the air passenger experience by studying and demonstrating the human impact of technol-
ogy innovations. The research team is using the new NRC Centre for Air Travel Research and real people in simulated tests to evaluate and analyze innovative disruptive concepts, cabin air quality and environmental control systems, passenger comfort, and issues associated with boarding and exiting aircraft. Analysis of the data gathered during these comprehensive tests will be used by researchers
to identify low-cost, high-return changes that can be applied early in the aircraft design process to the benefit of Airbus and its industry customers. This information will be used by Airbus to make evidencebased decisions that balance the safety and comfort of air passengers and crew with manufacturing and operational costs for its next-generation aircraft. This research collaboration is due in part to Airbus’ Industrial
and Technological Benefits (ITB) obligation associated with Canada’s Fixed Wing Search and Rescue Aircraft Replacement (FWSAR) program. Canada’s ITB Policy ensures that prime contractors provide business activities in Canada equal to the contract value. The FWSAR program is supporting approximately $2.5-billion (CAD) in ITB activities within the Canadian economy.

The Piper 100 is a new, primary, single engine training product for future professional pilots.
When William Piper introduced the Piper Cub in the U.S. in 1937, he had a dream that everyone should have the ability to fly and he believed his company could provide everyone with that freedom. More than 80 years later, and 130,000 Piper aircraft built, his dream lives on. Today, Piper Aircraft is the only general aviation manufacturer to offer a complete line of aircraft. From rugged, reliable trainers to a high-performance turboprop,
from student pilot to experienced aviator—Piper creates the freedom of flight for everyone. Most recently, Piper Aircraft has added two new value-priced additions to its trainer-class line, the Piper Pilot 100 and Pilot 100i. These new products enter the trainer segment at a competitive price point of $259,000. “With the unprecedented demand for professional pilots, our team worked closely with several key suppliers to deliver
an aggressively priced, proven trainer that offers the advanced systems and performance that flight schools and airline programs of all sizes desired,” said Piper president and CEO, Simon Caldecott. “We are excited to add the Pilot 100 series to our training product line at a price point that provides optimal economics for all operators.” The new Piper Pilot 100 / 100i rounds off Piper’s portfolio of training aircraft products.

Innovative solution to in-flight waste management Passengers are increasingly becoming aware of cabin waste on airliners as the amount generated during flights becomes a serious concern—one that takes creative solutions to fix. With costs increasing, new recycling regulations being implemented, and a greater emphasis placed on the aviation industry’s environmental impact, Airbus has initiated discussions with airlines to find innovative solutions for waste management. One answer has emerged from young minds via Fly Your Ideas—the biennial competition organized by Airbus in partnership with UNESCO that enables students around the globe to apply their classroom learning and research in solving realworld challenges. The Retrolley, originally created by Brazilian aviation students from Sao Paolo University (and a competition finalist in the 2015 Airbus Fly Your Ideas competition), is a totally re-designed trolley that collects trash and separates it at the same time. Nicolas Jourdan, an Airbus cabin innovation manager saw the students’ concept from the Fly Your Ideas challenge and thought: “Wow, this is so clear we should do something with this. We can make it fly, especially as it combines innovation and environmental goals together.” Airbus worked on maturing the students’ idea and transitioning the design into reality together with Iacobucci HF Aerospace, an Italian manufacturer that makes cabin products such as coffee machines, trash compactors and trolleys. The initial student concept has been refined and first test flights were performed in late 2018. The Retrolley has several different compartments that can be customized according to airlines’ specific needs. They were created with flexibility in mind, and possible configurations have many variations, such as one container
for stacked-up cups, another for liquids, one more to hold recyclable paper and plastics, and a fourth slot for trash that cannot be easily recycled. With its straightforward, non-electrical and lightweight design—as well as an ability to be integrated into any galley without modification—the Retrolley fulfils airlines’ key requirements and contributes to a more environmentally-friendly approach to in-flight waste. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), 5.2 million tonnes of cabin waste were created in 2016—and this number is expected to double by 2030. Contributing factors to the growth of in-cabin waste include the increase in air traffic, the rising consumption of passengers, more elaborately wrapped food and goods, as well as travellers bringing airport-bought food along with them. Currently, in-cabin waste is collected by cabin crews, rarely sorted, and nearly all of it is handed over to airports, which send it to landfills or incinerators. Some airports are raising their charges for handling waste that is not pre-sorted and some carriers find it more economically advantageous to hold on to their trash for the return flight, then unload it back at their hub, where fees may be lower. Overall, IATA estimates the cost of handling cabin waste to be approximately $500-million per year—and this figure is expected to double by 2030. IATA assistant director Jon Godson values the Retrolley as a way forward in the campaign against waste because it addresses health inspectors’ concerns about the need to clearly separate recyclable rubbish from other waste. “The Retrolley is a great step forward and should provide assurance to regulators that we can keep recyclables free from any bio-security risks,” said Godson.
Airbus also is convinced the Retrolley will be welcomed by airlines and contribute to a more sustainable future for air transport industry.
The Retrolley has several customizable compartments, which can be fitted for carriers’ specific needs.

Aviation museum seeks to restore Cessna 180 The Saskatchewan Aviation Museum and Learning Centre in Saskatoon has begun crowd funding through a GoFundMe page to raise money for the restoration of an aircraft of historic significance. The Cessna 180 CF-JDO aircraft was retrieved earlier this year after resting in Peter Pond Lake in Northern Saskatchewan for 60 years. Pilot Ray Gran and conservation officer Harold Thompson were on board the Saskatchewan Government Airways Cessna 180 aircraft when it went missing in 1959. Sixty years ago, the technology to find and raise the wreck either didn’t exist or was not available. However, about a
year ago Gran’s daughter Linda Kapusta and her husband Don organized a search using modern sonar equipment. The aircraft, which was lying on the bottom of the lake, quickly appeared on the screen. Don Kapusta and his crew from Ontario, as well as Dorrin Wallace, Saskatchewan Aviation Museum president, bush pilot and businessman, planned and led the recovery procedure. The badly damaged wreck was raised and trucked to the museum building at Hangar 5 at the Saskatoon airport. At the request of the northern community the aircraft will remain in the museum hangar on display for the next year, after

New process for review and authorization of air carrier joint ventures now in place Effective immediately, the authority to review and authorize joint ventures between airlines in Canada will now be reviewed and authorized by the Minister of Transport. Previously, only the Competition Bureau reviewed air carrier joint ventures to determine whether a joint venture would substantially lessen or prevent competition. It did not consider factors beyond those related to competition, such as impact on employment. This new process allows the Minister of Transport, currently the Honourable Marc Garneau, to authorize a proposed joint venture that would be in the public interest by balancing those interests with impacts on competition. This was a key priority from the Minister’s Transportation 2030 strategy to promote greater choice and connectivity in the air sector. Joint ventures are an increasingly common practice in the global air transportation sector. They allow
two or more air carriers to coordinate functions on specific routes, including scheduling, pricing, revenue management, marketing and sales. Such ventures can open up new routes and markets for Canadian travellers and allow access to more destinations, including more international markets, without needing to book separate tickets on different carriers. The Transportation Modernization Act (Act) set out the new voluntary process where air carriers can seek authorization for joint ventures from the Minister of Transport, and to allow the Minister to consider both the impacts on competition (assessed by the Commissioner of Competition) and the public interest when authorizing such arrangements. New regulations stemming from the Act also allow for the recovery of costs from participating air carriers for Transport Canada activities related to the public interest review of joint ventures.
British Airways becomes first airline to receive Autism Friendly Award
British Airways provides substantial investment in accessibility training for all its customer service staff. Photo: Stuart Bailey.
In celebration of World Autism Awareness Day on April 2, British Airways announced it is the first airline to be awarded the renowned Autism Friendly Award, accredited by the National Autistic Society. The airline has been recognized for the work it is doing to raise awareness of autism among its staff and for creating a personalized, seamless travel experience for autistic customers, allowing them to fly independently and with ease. As British Airways celebrates
its centenary year, the airline has been working closely with several specialist charities, including the National Autistic Society, and has implemented numerous enhancements to improve the experience for all customers requiring additional assistance, including those with autism and other hidden disabilities. Supporting customers with additional needs Earlier this year, the airline launched its ‘Beyond Accessibility’ campaign, its
biggest-ever global accessibility training programme, empowering colleagues to fully support customers requiring additional assistance. In addition to this substantial investment in accessibility training, the airline endorses the ‘Sunflower’ hidden disability lanyard, a subtle way for customers to let British Airways customer service agents know they have a hidden disability and may require extra help. The airline regularly meets with its accessibility customer advisory group and has implemented a series of improvements across all stages of the customer journey, from booking to arrival at the destination, leading to a significant increase in customer satisfaction from travellers with both hidden and visible disabilities. Abbotsford Airshow as “Canada’s National
Due to Transport Canada’s continued closure of Canadian airspace to the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, Air Canada has further adjusted its schedule through to May 31. The carrier anticipates it will cover 98 per cent of previously planned flying for the month through a series of mitigation measures, schedule changes and temporary route suspensions. In compliance with the safety notice issued by Transport Canada on March 13, 2019, Air Canada grounded its fleet of 24 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. Air Canada is now updating its June schedule to optimize its fleet and re-accommodate customers. Since the timeline for the return to service of the 737 MAX is unknown, for planning purposes and to provide customers certainty for booking and travel, Air Canada has removed 737 MAX flying from its schedule until at least July 1, 2019. Final decisions on returning the 737 MAX to service will be based on Air Canada’s safety assessment, following the lifting of government safety notices and approval by international regulatory authorities. Among the measures taken by Air Canada: Mitigations To mitigate the impact, Air Canada has been substituting different aircraft on 737 MAX routes. This includes flying routes with similar-sized or larger aircraft.
To help provide this replacement flying, the carrier has extended leases for aircraft which were scheduled to exit the fleet. Air Canada is also accelerating the in-take of recently acquired Airbus A321 aircraft from Icelandic airline WOW Air into its fleet. Working with partner airlines The carrier has worked with other carriers to provide immediate extra capacity and provide alternative options to passengers. Schedule changes until June 30 The airline has implemented several route changes to date, either changing operating times or substituting larger aircraft with fewer frequencies on routes operated more frequently by smaller aircraft. In some cases, seasonal route launches have been delayed. This includes Vancouver-Boston, which will now start June 16 instead of June 1. In addition, selected frequencies on domestic routes will be served by Air Canada Rouge aircraft. Route suspensions In a small number of cases, Air Canada has suspended service temporarily on certain 737 MAX routes where alternative aircraft are not presently available. Customer information As changes are finalized in the flight schedule, customers
whose flight times or flight numbers have changed can expect to receive an email detailing their updated itinerary. This information is also available in My Bookings on the Air Canada app or Air Canada website. Customers are advised, whether they have booked directly through Air Canada or not, to ensure their contact information is on their booking to facilitate communication of any flight changes. Air Canada has put in place a flexible rebooking policy with full fee waiver and a refund option for affected customers. Customers originally scheduled to travel on a 737 MAX may call Air Canada at 1-833354-5963 for information within 72 hours of their planned flight. Customers who have booked flights through a travel agent should contact them for immediate assistance. Customers are further advised to check the status of their flight using the Flight Status function on the Air Canada app or on aircanada.com prior to going to the airport. Additional information, including specific changes to the April and May scheduled operation of Air Canada’s 737 MAX aircraft is provided at the special page, ‘Update on flights operated by the Boeing 737 MAX,’ available on aircanada. com, which will be updated as warranted.

WestJet ratifies five-year agreement with AMEs Earlier this month, 93 per cent of the 688-membership Aircraft Maintenance Engineers Association (AMEA) voted in favour of a five-year agreement with WestJet. The agreement, which will begin on May 1, 2019, recognizes the value of WestJet AMEs and technicians and their dedication to safety. “We are pleased that our AMEs have accepted what we believe is an excellent agreement for our members,” said Todd Hunt, AMEA Chair. “The compensation is competitive, fair and maintains our ability to retain and recruit skilled AMEs.”
The agreement will remain in place until 2024. “WestJet is pleased at the vote outcome and believes this agreement is beneficial to our hard-working AMEs, while providing long-term sustainability for WestJet and all employees,” said Jeff Martin, WestJet chief operating officer. “I sincerely thank the AMEA for the transparent, fair and open process and for representing WestJet’s AMEs with professionalism.” The AMEA is a member of the WestJet Employee Association.

World’s first airline surveillance system goes live An historic milestone for the aviation industry, one that ushers in a new era of safety and efficiency, has been made possible by Aireon, the first-ever real-time, global air traffic surveillance system, which is now fully operational and in trial use over the North Atlantic. Aireon’s space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADSB) system provides real-time air traffic surveillance and tracking to 100 per cent of ADS-Bequipped aircraft on the planet. Prior to Aireon’s system coming on-line, traditional groundbased surveillance covered just 30 per cent of the globe, meaning civil aviation authorities, commercial carriers and related industry stakeholders relied upon position updates from aircraft every 10 to 14 minutes to track aircraft outside of radar coverage, not the real-time updates that the Aireon service provides. The Aireon system is expected to reduce overall flight safety risks by approximately 76 per cent in the North Atlantic, according to a joint analysis by NAV Canada and NATS—the first Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) to use the service. Improved visibility and control over previously un-surveilled
Planes equipped with ADS-B capabilities can now stream their exact position to a network of 66 satellites.
airspace—especially across oceanic regions—will allow airlines to fly routes at optimal speeds and levels, delivering expected cost savings of up to US$300 per transatlantic flight, plus reducing carbon dioxide emissions by two tonnes per flight, based on an analysis conducted by NATS and
the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Use of the Aireon system over the Atlantic allows for air traffic controllers to trial the reduction of aircraft in-trail separation distances from 40 nautical miles (nm) to just as little as 14nm, making the airspace more flexible, predict-
able and able to accommodate the immense growth predicted in the coming years. Regulations mandating ADS-B equipage on aircraft have already been implemented throughout the world, going into effect in the United States in January 2020 and
in Europe in June 2020. Other countries are in the process of drafting mandates for implementation over the next few years. Eight years in the making, Aireon’s ADS-B payloads are hosted on the Iridium NEXT satellite constellation—the final deployment of which took
place January 11, 2019. After receiving control of the final six ADS-B payloads from Iridium on February 7, 2019, Aireon completed payload testing, validation and calibration stages prior to launching the full system into operation to support current ANSP customers.
Sunwing partners with Mount Royal University on pilot cadet program Sunwing Airlines has established a new partnership agreement with Mount Royal University and plans to hire its first graduates this coming summer. Mount Royal is the latest university, and the first in Alberta, with which the airline has partnered as part of its direct entry cadet program for aviation graduates. Sunwing already has agreements in place with both the University of Waterloo and Seneca College in Ontario and has hired 24 graduates since the program was established in 2016. The Mount Royal Aviation Diploma offers students the opportunity to graduate with both the academic qualifica-
tions and the inflight training needed to become a commercial airline pilot. Mount Royal University aviation graduates have an average employment rate of 98 per cent. Once licensed to fly the aircraft, newly hired graduates follow Sunwing Airlines’ continuous program of line indoctrination and receive mentoring to ensure that they achieve their career goals. Overall, the airline plans to hire between eight and ten new First Officers from its cadet program this coming year. More information on careers within Sunwing Airlines can be found at sunwing.ca

Hybrid air-breathing SABRE rocket engine to enter test phase British aerospace manufacturer Reaction Engines has received further endorsement of its revolutionary SABRE engine design via its collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the UK Space Agency (UKSA). The two agencies recently reviewed the preliminary design of the demonstrator engine core of the Synergetic Air-Breathing Rocket Engine (SABRE), which Reaction Engines will use to undertake ground-based testing at its under-construction test facility at Westcott, Buckinghamshire. The successful review of the hypersonic engine, which is designed to act as both a jet and a rocket, means that the company can move on the major testing milestones in the next 18 months. Reaction Engines launched a significant new element of its development programme in
October 2016 to design, build and demonstrate a SABRE engine core. The test item consists of an engine core, which is a major module of the complete SABRE engine, but without the pre-cooler and rocket nozzle in place. This core design and development activity is a major undertaking and upon completion of the tests, major elements of the world’s first air-breathing engine capable of accelerating from zero to Mach 5 will have been demonstrated. The SABRE engine core tests are part of a range of development activities currently underway at Reaction Engines. The company will shortly begin its HTX ‘hot’ heat exchanger testing in a unique test facility it has constructed in Colorado, United States.

The HTX test programme is a manufacturing and performance ground-level demonstration of the SABRE engine ‘Pre-Cooler’ heat exchanger in a high temperature environment, similar
with that expected to be seen by the SABRE engine during its air-breathing flight regime—up to 1,000-degrees Celsius air inlet temperature. “One of the great advantages
of the SABRE propulsion concept is that it is totally modular from both design and operational perspectives,” said Richard Varvill, CTO, Reaction Engines. “Therefore, it is possible to subject
each of the key components of the engine to rigorous ground testing, which fully mimic the operational conditions the engine will face up to Mach 5 flight at 25-kilometre altitude.”
KLM to suspend tax-free sales on board From July 2019, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will no longer offer tax-free articles for sale on its European flights. The airline will also suspend sales on intercontinental flights in January 2020, as well. “Because the current sales
process no longer meet today’s customer requirements, we have decided, after extensive deliberation, to bring this to an end,” said Miriam Kartman, executive vice president, KLM Inflight Services. For decades now, KLM has
been meeting customer needs by offering tax-free articles, both online and on board. More recently, however, customers have grown accustomed to an almost infinite range of products for which they can look up the lowest price online.

Competition with product ranges offered at airports is also growing. KLM is currently exploring alternative forms of travel retail concept. “We will shortly be launching several pilot projects to this end,” said Kartman. “Customer convenience and a wide range of products are central to this.”
