Change is in the air at YVR: May update
There are several key projects currently taking place at YVR that will enhance the airport experience. This includes the airport’s biggest sustainability projects to date, new parking options, terminal expansions and much more. Terminal • There will be various improvements to a section of Pier B, in the Domestic terminal. As part of this work, there will be hoarding and phased closures of two passenger hold rooms. Work is anticipated to be complete by June 2019. • s part of the International Pier D expansion project, steel work continues. This will take
place airside and may include noisy work. Given that there are 24-hour operations in this part of the terminal, this could potentially be disruptive for those with flights at nearby gates. Travellers who may be looking for somewhere quiet will find seating in the creek area, near the food court. • There may be intermittent noise at U.S. check-in, U.S. pre-board screening area as well as U.S. Customs during daytime hours. This work is being done to improve the airport’s processes for transfer passengers. • As construction begins on several of YVR’s new food and beverage and retail options, passengers can
expect to see various hoarding around the terminal. In and Around Sea Island • Various work is continuing in the old Value Lot (adjacent to the Parkade) for the construction of a new six-storey parking lot and Central Utilities Building. A new toll plaza is now open and is the first permanent structure of the new Parkade. Please follow all directional signage in the area. There are also several related projects nearby the site, including: • Work taking place outside International Arrivals on level 2 in Chester Johnson Park. In order to facilitate the work,

a section of the park is now closed. The pet relief area and Japadog will remain in the current location. • A period of significant excavation from the project site has begun. In line with YVR’s commitment to sustainability and construction waste diversion, the valuable earthworks materials will be transported to an unused parcel of land south of the BCIT campus on Russ Baker Way. While there are no current plans to develop this site, this is an opportunity to re-use and recycle valuable materials to prepare the land for potential future development. This waste diversion project is expected to prevent more than 215,000 cubic metres of soil from landfill this year alone. • Construction is underway to prepare for Phase II of

Craig Richmond, president & CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority, at the annual YVR Stars Awards Gala.
This past year, YVR has received many significant accolades, including being named Best Airport in North America by Skytrax for a record tenth consecutive year. This incredible achievement would not be possible without YVR’s outstanding team of dedicated employees, partners and volunteers on Sea Island, all of whom go beyond, every day to ensure passengers’ journeys are carried out as smoothly as possible. Outstanding work is recognized annually at the YVR Star Awards Gala, an official airport program that recognizes workers and volunteers on Sea Island who go the extra mile for customers.
A YVR Star can be anyone, from a ground transportation employee helping a passenger jump start their car to a barista who puts a smile on someone’s face. At the fourth annual YVR Star Awards Gala, held earlier this year, 280 YVR Stars were honoured, including individuals from the airport’s Green Goat volunteer program, customerservice providers, retail partners, airline staff, curbside operations and many others who demonstrated exceptional safety and security, teamwork and overall customer care. In 2018, YVR received a total of 450 YVR Star nominations for individuals from 39 companies,
all of which featured stories of above-and-beyond service. Have you seen someone provide exemplary service at YVR? Or has someone helped you when you really needed it? If so, nominate them as a YVR Star and share your memorable experience. Anyone may nominate a YVR Star. Once a nomination is submitted, the employee or volunteer named is notified of their new YVR Star status and given a special thank-you gift. During the year, stories of individuals who have been nominated will be featured in Skytalk. Learn more at yvr.ca/yvrstars or email your nomination to yvrstars@yvr.ca.
Multi-agency training exercise hosted at YVR On April 30, YVR hosted a multi-agency training exercise, which included nearly 500 participants from 25 different agencies across Sea Island and the Lower Mainland. Airport operations were not affected by this exercise. The training exercise simulated a mock aircraft crash, which involved a mid-air collision between an inbound aircraft and a helicopter that necessitated an emergency landing for the aircraft. The fictional flight received significant damage to its landing equipment and crashed upon landing at YVR. The simulated aircraft wreckage was attended to by emergency responders. A zone for family and friends was also set up to simulate the care and dissemination of information needed during an emergency. A team of volunteers played injured victims, passengers, family members and mock media, giving everyone involved a realistic experience. This type of training exercise provides crucial opportunities to practice emergency response plans with business partners and the airport community.

confidently navigate the airport, opening up a world of air travel opportunities,” said Jull. CAN and YVR began their partnership in 2014 with the aim of decreasing anxiety associated with air travel and building confidence for future travel success. Since its launch, the annual YVR & CAN Autism Accessibility Tour has been delivered to more than 400 individuals, many of whom have since travelled successfully. “At YVR, one of our top priorities is providing a positive and accessible experience for everyone,” said Kim Halowski, manager, community relations, Vancouver Airport Authority. “We were proud to once again partner with CAN to host this year’s autism accessibility tour. Beyond the tour and through our long-standing partnership with CAN, we have been able to introduce a number of accessible travel tools and resources to help families and individuals living with autism navigate the airport experience—another step
towards our goal of removing barriers to air travel.” The autism accessibility program includes helpful resources such as the YVR Resource Kit, which features a step-by-step story-book, interactive checklist, airport map and tips for travel and a video series that helps travellers with autism prepare for flight. YVR has also introduced the YVR Autism Access Sticker, a self-identification tool for individuals living with autism that can be placed on boarding passes. The sticker ensures an expedited airport process through screening and customs and better communicates the specific needs of passengers to airport employees. Special thanks have been expressed to Air Transat, the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (US CBP) and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) for their support of the program. For more information about autism accessibility at YVR, please visit yvr.ca/autism.
YVR’s recent emergency exercise simulation included live scenario training to test airport safety and response in the unlikely event of an incident.
“At YVR, safety is our number one priority,” said Robyn McVicker, vice president, operations & maintenance, Vancouver Airport Authority. “We view exercises and training as an essential part of this commitment to safety by remaining prepared in the unlikely event of an incident. I was pleased to see the level of coordination between all our partners and volunteers to manage effectively the simulated emergency. “Hosting multi-agency training allows us to test our Emergency Management Plan in realistic conditions and helps refine our plans to incorporate the knowledge gained.”
Emergency exercises are a key part of YVR’s Emergency Management Plan and are performed on a regular basis. Emergency exercises may include live scenario training, table-top exercises and emergency simulation drills. YVR’s Emergency Manage‑ ment Plan deals with all emergency situations including aircraft incidents, natural disasters, medical emergencies, security threats and biological hazards. It is refined on a regular basis to incorporate knowledge learned through exercise and the latest developments in airport safety and emergency management.

YVR’s 2019-2023 Noise Management Plan outlines goals to minimize noise impact Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is a global hub airport and community-focused company that operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. With all this movement comes hundreds of aircraft each day, with a flight taking off or landing every two minutes, on average, and each bringing a measure of noise. Over the past 20 years, newage aircraft have been developed with the goal of reducing noise. For example, the audible ground noise from the latest 747 model is 40 decibels less than a 747 manufactured in the 1980s. To put that in perspective, this approximates the noise difference between a window air conditioner and a rock concert. As YVR strives to be a responsible neighbour to its surrounding community, it is working to reduce noise significantly. For example, as part of its ground lease with the federal government, YVR is required to manage noise within 18.5 kilometres of the airport. Additionally, every five years Vancouver Airport Authority publishes its Noise Management Plan: a comprehensive program to address noise from aircraft and aircraft operations. In February 2019, YVR’s Noise Management Plan for the years 2019-2023 was accepted
by Transport Canada. The plan is a culmination of reviewing noise management practices at other airports, working collaboratively with stakeholders, such as the YVR Aeronautical Noise Management Committee (ANMC), and engaging its neighbouring community. This new Noise Management Plan consists of 12 elements that will serve to minimize environmental and noise impacts associated with airport operations. These include reviewing the airport’s night-time operations guidelines and supporting the development of PerformanceBased Navigation (PBN). PBN procedures use GPS technology to optimize airspace used along aircraft routes to make them more environmentally efficient. They can also be
used to design routes that are less noisy for communities on the ground. Operating 24 hours a day to support British Columbia’s travel and business demands, YVR has grown to be Canada’s secondbusiest airport. In addition to its continued work in minimizing its environmental and noise impact, YVR, as a financially independent and community-focused organization, also donates more than $1-million to various Lower Mainland community organizations each year. Implementing its Noise Management Plan is just one more way in which YVR continues to be accountable to the community. The YVR 2019-2023 Noise Management Plan is available on yvr.ca.
Larry Berg Flight Path Park features aviation-themed information panels, a climbable dome-shaped top of a globe and is also the perfect area to spot overhead aircraft on their way to landing.

First-of-its-kind smart waste bins piloted at YVR
Hassan Murad, CEO of Vancouver-based Intuitive AI. The Oscar intuitive artificial-intelligence sensor uses a camera and ultrasonic sensor to see a person approaching a trash can, predicts what the piece of garbage is and tells the person the correct section of the bin in which to place it.
An artificial intelligenceenabled Smart Waste Bin pilot program designed by Intuitive AI, a Vancouver-based technology company, was recently introduced at YVR. Known as Oscar, after trashloving Sesame Street character Oscar the Grouch, the smart bin leverages a combination of robotics, machine learning and
computer vision to detect and accurately route disposed items into the correct waste category. YVR is the first airport to leverage this technology, with three smart bins currently located in the terminal. The system includes a 32-inch display screen and an artificial intelligence-powered camera that automatically identifies recycling
from trash and instructs users on whether it belongs in the containers, compost, paper or landfill stream. The technology allows Oscar to differentiate between items that are partly obscuring one another and prioritize which ones to instruct users about first. “At YVR, we strive to be a leader in environmental management,” said Shaye FolkBlagbrough, senior environmental specialist, Vancouver Airport Authority. “Understanding that our passengers come from around the world with different waste sorting systems, one of the challenges we face is ensuring waste is correctly sorted at waste bins located throughout the terminal. As such, we’re constantly looking at creative approaches to waste management. We’re thrilled to work with Intuitive AI and welcome Oscar to YVR. In a short amount of time, we’ve seen the positive impact Oscar has had on our waste diversion program at YVR. Aiding our passengers with waste sorting through artificial intelligence is an innovative way of improving the airport’s environmental footprint through
technology.” YVR’s waste management efforts focus largely on the airport’s main terminals. Initiatives include working collaboratively with partners to reduce the impact—from offering passengers multi-stream recycling stations throughout the terminal, to implementing alternative solutions with food and beverage tenants to divert waste from landfill. “At Intuitive AI, our vision is to empower a zero-waste world and we’re starting right at the source with Oscar,” said Hassan Murad, chief executive officer, Intuitive AI. “We couldn’t think of a more innovative place than YVR. The airport has provided Oscar with an opportunity to constantly improve itself and nudge hundreds of travellers into diverting waste away from landfills every single day.” In 2018, YVR recycled and composted 2.4 of 4.8-million kilograms of Domestic and International terminal buildings waste, resulting in a 51 per cent diversion rate—one per cent over the 2020 target, for the third year in a row.
Smart waste bins leverage a combination of robotics, machine learning and computer vision to detect and accurately route disposed items into the correct waste category.
Airbus’ ACJ319neo accomplishes recordsetting test flight
Five-person flight crew on Airbus’ ACJ319neo’s record-setting test flight.
Last month, the first ACJ319neo (new engine option) successfully completed a test flight lasting 16 hours and 10 minutes and setting a record for the longest A320 Family flight by an Airbus crew. The aircraft was flown from Toulouse, France, to northern Greenland and back, in an endurance flight that included a simulated diversion under 180 min ETOPS (extended range twin-engine operations) rules, for which the A320 airliner family is already certified.
“We want to fly customers to their destination using the quickest routes, as well as delivering unsurpassed comfort and service, and it’s impressive to see such long-range capability at first hand,” said K5 Aviation CEO and Chief Pilot Erik Scheidt, who participated in the flight. Airbus’ previous record was a Santiago-Paris flown in 15 hours and 15 minutes by an ACJ319 in 1999. The ACJ319neo is derived from the A320neo airliner Family, which features new engines and wingtip-mounted Sharklets.

Air Canada’s Aeroplan recognized internationally Last month, at a ceremony for the Freddie Awards in Dallas, Texas, Air Canada’s Aeroplan loyalty program was presented with the 210 Award for the airline in the Americas whose program value vote rating was trending higher. Known as the Voice of the Frequent Flyer, the Freddie Awards were established in 1988 and are named for Freddie Laker, who revolutionized the global travel industry in the 1970s. The awards this year were based on 7.1-million ballots submitted by frequent travellers from 237 countries. “We’re thrilled to receive this acknowledgment that Aeroplan is among the best at engaging mem-
bers and delivers some unbeatable value,” said Mark Nasr, vice president, loyalty and eCommerce, Air Canada. “This provides more welcome momentum as we move closer to launching a more rewarding loyalty program in 2020. The Freddie Awards celebrate the best in loyalty programs, and we’re pleased to see our ongoing efforts to strengthen our program recognized by our own members.” Earlier this year, Air Canada signed a multi-year Software-asa-Service agreement with IBS software to power its new loyalty program, launching in 2020. The use of IBS’ iFly Loyalty cloud-based loyalty management platform will be the underlying
core technology solution used by the airline to provide its members with more value-added options. First JAL A350-900 makes debut from paint shop The first A350 XWB for Japan Airlines (JAL) has rolled out of the Airbus paint shop in Toulouse, France. The A350-900 is the firstever Airbus aircraft produced directly for JAL and features a special A350 XWB red logo on the fuselage. The aircraft will now pro-
ceed to ground and flight tests, before delivery to JAL in early summer 2019. In total, JAL has ordered 31 A350 XWB aircraft, comprising 18 A350-900s and 13 A350-1000s. The A350 XWB is a longrange aircraft in the large widebody market (300 to 400+ seats). It features the latest aerodynamic
Canada Jetlines launch delayed until December 2019
Canada Jetlines described its mission as “To provide Canadians with the best value in air travel with a focus on safety and reliability.”
Vancouver-based Canada Jetlines, the proposed new Canadian Ultra Low-Cost Carrier (ULCC), has moved its official launched date to December 17, 2019. Originally, tickets were supposed to go on sale in spring 2018. The airline latest target launch date is the result of new financing partnerships with SmartLynx Airlines SIA for up to $15-million and a Korean special purpose fund, led and established by InHarv Partners from Seoul, Korea, for up to $14-million. As a result of the agreement with SmartLynx, Jetlines is terminating the leases for two Airbus A320 aircraft from AerCap and entered into a letter of intent with SmartLynx for the lease of two alternate Airbus A320. These aircraft will be available
for delivery in Q4 2019, in line with the new launch date. “I am pleased with the Jetlines strategy of launching for the winter peak, in time for the holidays,” said Canada Jetlines executive chairman. “The leased aircraft are on favourable terms as a result of our partnership with SmartLynx and this decision is expected to help Jetlines deliver better results than originally anticipated. In addition to our financing announcements with SmartLynx and InHarv, the company continues to work with other groups in effort to secure the rest of the capital required for our start-up.” Canada Jetlines plans to offer ultra low fares and direct flights across Canada and non-stop from Canada to the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Montreal-based CAE, best known as one of the world’s leading providers of civil aviation training and simulation, has successfully expanded into other areas, such as training solutions for defence and security and health care. The 71-year-old public company has annual revenues of more than $2-billion, with 8,500 employees, customers around the world and a training network that spans the globe, including more than 65 training centres and flight schools in some 35 countries. Founded in 1947 by an ex-Royal Canadian Air Force officer, CAE had its first order for a flight simulator from the Canadian forces in 1952 and by the 1970s had reached 50 per cent of the global market share in
simulator sales. The company achieved an important milestone in 1982, creating a product certified by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration to be so realistic that since that day all the training for commercial pilots around the world is done on flight simulators. By 2000, CAE had 70 per cent of the market share in simulators worldwide. The next move was into the training market and the company began opening and acquiring aviation training centres. With its increasing focus on training, these services now account for 60 per cent of CAE’s revenues, up from the 2001 level of 15 per cent, which was primarily related to simulator maintenance.
In 2009, the company launched a health-care division, leveraging its experience in simulation-based training to improve safety and efficiency in the new sector. CAE’s lifelike manikins now help medical practitioners train for everything from emergency procedures to anesthesiology and ultrasound techniques. Innovation remains at the heart of the company’s strategy. For example, CAE has developed next-generation technology that relays a wide range of information about pilot training sessions directly to flight instructors. The system provides data-driven insights showing whether a pilot’s performance is within exact tolerances, which is an efficient method for evaluating critical skills.
While CAE today is number one in selling simulators and in commercial aviation training, according to Al Contrino, global leader of business development & strategic partnerships at CAE, the company’s strategic plan over the next three to five years is to “look at places where we’re not, or where airlines are growing and something has changed.” Partnerships and joint ventures with airlines to develop training centres are key for the company, especially in fastgrowing markets. “This allows airlines to concentrate on revenue-generating activities, such as filling up airplanes and for CAE to concentrate on what we do well, which is providing simulation-based training,” said Contrino.
Pilots perfect skills using simulators Flight simulator facts: • Most pilots currently flying around the world have trained on CAE equipment. • A simulator replicates in every detail the cockpit of the aircraft that it simulates; • The simulator also reproduces, with great accuracy

and realism, the visual environment the aircraft appears to be flying in, including clouds, thunderstorms and the landing approaches of airports around the world. • Simulators also simulate sound and motion, including the banking and turning of the aircraft, accelerations and the feel of tires as they roll across the bumps and cracks in the runway. CAE’s visual system uses
satellite imagery of the whole planet. • A simulator can reproduce 250 to 400 incidents or malfunctions so that the pilot can practice and be ready for all sorts of scenarios: engine failures, smoke in the cockpit, wind shear, electronic or hydraulic failures, etc.. • The electronic brain of a simulator is stronger than 30 Xboxes. A simulator weighs about 12 tonnes—
the equivalent of four elephants. • Simulators are environmentally-friendly: CAE estimates that 18.5 million gallons of jet fuel are saved annually by using a simulator for a Boeing 747 instead of an actual aircraft. • The list price for a flight simulator can range from $8- to $20-million, depending on the type of aircraft and all the data, parts and equipment needed.

Airlander 10 blimp to be used in electric propulsion development A partnership between British company Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV), Iowa-based Collins Aerospace, and the University of Nottingham have won grant funding in excess of one-million pounds from the UK Aerospace Research and Technology Programme to develop electric propulsion technologies, using an Airlander 10 helium airship as the initial platform. Designed and built by HAV in 2016, the Airlander 10 helium airship flies using both aerostatic and aerodynamic lift and is powered by four diesel engine-driven ducted propellers. The project, named E-HAV1, will deliver a full-sized prototype 500kW electric propulsor for ground testing and technologies ready for future production. These technologies will be
directly applicable to a future Airlander 10, with the goal of replacing its fuel-burning forward engines as the first step towards an all-electric version of the aircraft. “Reducing our carbon footprint is one of the biggest challenges facing aviation today,” said HAV’s CEO Stephen McGlennan. “While Airlander 10 is already helping customers rethink the skies with incredible efficiency, we have to find ways of further reducing the impact we have on our environment. This project will move us closer to our goal of zero-carbon aviation.” Airlander 10’s ability to support a broad range of activities, from passenger travel to fisheries protection, made it the ideal platform for pioneering electric propulsion in civil aircraft.
Zero-carbon aviation is one step closer with the award of a UK Aerospace Research and Technology Program grant to develop electric propulsion for the Airlander 10.

TWA Hotel opens at JFK Airport
Travel Talk
At the center of the TWA Hotel is Finnish architect Eero Saarinen’s iconic TWA Flight Center, where restaurants, bars and retail outlets take flight.
The rooftop infinity pool, which measures 19.5-metres, is said to have been inspired by the infinity edge pool at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes.
This month, New York’s JFK Airport will boast its first and only onsite hotel, complete with an infinity rooftop pool overlooking the runway. Inspired by the year 1962, when Jet Age excitement electrified the country, John F. Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy graced the White House in the golden Camelot era and The Beatles released “Love Me Do,” the $265-million TWA Hotel and its 512 guestrooms will have views of JFK’s runways and the historic TWA Flight Center. In keeping with its homage to the Golden Era, TWA Hotel includes a 1950s rotary phone
ters) and the Aviation (Crème de violette, Maraschino liqueur, gin and lemon juice). To honour TWA, Gerber Group will offer the official TWA Martini and put its own modern twist on the Royal Ambassador Cocktail (Champagne, orange juice and Grand Marnier), which was served in gold-flecked glassware to elite passengers. Original signature cocktails are also available, including the Come Fly With Me, inspired by Frank Sinatra’s 1958 album cover and garnished with a rainbow of swizzle sticks. The stirrers are
retrofitted with a pulse-to-tone converter on which guests can make unlimited free international and local calls. Gerber Group, owner-operator of 12 innovative cocktail bars and restaurants in New York, Atlanta and Santiago, Chile, operates The Sunken Lounge, the premier bar at the hotel in which a great deal of history has been made. Designed by Finnish architect Eero Saarinen, The Sunken Lounge was where crowds gathered to watch the Beatles arrive in the United States in 1965, and visitors saw the Ford Trimotor three-engined transport aircraft,
aka the Tin Goose, break a transcontinental record right outside the window in June 1962. When The Sunken Lounge welcomes its first guests this month, travellers will clink glasses in a space unlike any other. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide views of the hotel’s 1958 “Connie” airplane (parked on the tarmac just outside), while overhead a split flap departures board displays custom messages. Naturally, Gerber Group will stock the menu with 1960s cocktail favourites, including the Old Fashioned (whiskey and bit-
modeled after TWA’s original sets highlighting its travel destinations (Africa, Greece, England) and its own propeller fleet. Guests can also order from an expansive collection of small-batch spirits, carefully-curated wines and regionally brewed craft beers, all complemented by elevated bar fare. A rooftop infinity pool and observation deck at the hotel will remain open 365 days a year. In summer, the water will offer a much-needed cooling respite in sweltering temperatures. In winter, it will turn into a “poolcuzzi”, where the water can be
heated up to 100 degrees. Whatever the weather, the pool’s highly filtered water will be purified every 30 minutes, compared with a standard pool in which water is recirculated every six hours. Once the TWA Hotel opens this month, it is projected to receive 10,000 customers a day. For more information and booking details, visit twahotel. com. Cathay Pacific, Delta Airlines and Philippine Airlines offer flights from YVR to New York’s JFK airport.
Helijet renews BC Air Ambulance Agreement
TWA Hotel’s glass curtain wall— the second-thickest in the world after the wall at the U.S. Embassy in London—is seven panes and 4½ inches thick. The glass’ Sound Transmission Class (STC) rating of nearly 50 ensures the floor-to-ceiling, full-width windows cancel runway noise. Based at YVR, Helijet provides helicopter airline and charter service, as well as air ambulance services.
Last month, Helijet’s dedicated air medical contract with British Columbia Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) was renewed for an additional four years. Helijet will continue to supply four Sikorsky S-76 model helicopters for the B.C. Ambulance Service, which is operated by BCEHS. Under the new agreement, a current Sikorsky S-76A helicopter used by Helijet as a backup aircraft will be replaced with a newer model Sikorsky S-76C to provide consistency throughout the air ambulance fleet.
One of the four S-76C aircraft will continue to be based at Helijet’s Seal Cove, Prince Rupert facility, while the other two and the back-up will operate from Helijet’s Vancouver International Airport (YVR) facility. BCEHS also has another contracted helicopter based in Kamloops, plus seven fixedwing aircraft in its air ambulance fleet to serve British Columbians. All these aircraft continue to provide air ambulance service for patients around the province on a 7/24/365-day operation.

Rendering of Air New Zealand’s new Hangar 4 to be constructed at its Auckland engineering base.
Air New Zealand will begin construction on the largest singlespan timber arch aircraft hangar in the world at its engineering base in Auckland later this year. ‘Hangar 4’ will be large enough to house a wide-body aircraft such as the airline’s 777300 or 787-9 Dreamliner, and two narrow-body aircraft such as the A320 or A321neo, at the same time. The 10,000-square-metre hangar will meet the highest standards of sustainable building construction and operation. A double-layer insulated fabric roof will enable the hangar to
retain heat without the need for a heating system, while several large ceiling fans will circulate warm air back down to floor level in winter and provide a cooling effect in summer. “Our existing hangars were built in the 1960s and 1980s and while they have served us well, our fleet has grown both in number and in physical size over the past decades,” said Carrie Hurihanganui, Air New Zealand chief ground operations officer. “We now have a need for a more modern, innovative structure that takes energy use and other sustainability factors into account.”
The hangar has been designed with input from the airline’s engineering and maintenance employees to ensure it is fit for purpose. “At one and a half times the size of our current largest hangar, Hangar 4 will provide us with a state-of-the-art facility to continue to maintain our modern fleet to a high standard,” said Hurihanganui. “We’re really excited to see it become a reality over the next couple of years.” The two-year construction programme is expected to start towards the end of 2019.

SAN Innovation Lab hosts second group of airport innovators The Airport Innovation Lab at San Diego International Airport (SAN) is once again hosting a group of innovators in a 16-week accelerator program to field test and develop their concepts in a real-world airport environment. While the first group of innovators in 2018 was specifically focused on airport parking and easing the airport experience, the second group was not asked to focus on one or more specific areas. “We wanted to try a wildcard approach this time,” said Rick Belliotti, director of customer experience & innovation at SAN. “This allows people to show us ideas we might not have thought of otherwise. Future opportunities will generally have more definition, but we also may want to offer wild-card opportunities again, depending on how well this plays out.” The five entrants and their concepts are: • AirporTour—testing interactive airport guides with audio tours • Ciari Guitars, Inc.—offering a guitar kiosk featuring the world’s first and only foldable, travel guitar where travellers can play and/or listen to music while relaxing • HOHM, Inc.—providing high-tech sleep pods for travellers to rest in for 30-minute to four-hour periods in otherwise under-utilised space • InnoTech Systems LLC— using autonomous robot guides to provide navigation through the airport and other travel assistance • Nuvve Corporation—pioneering vehicle-to-grid applications at airports with excess electric vehicle (batterystored) energy sold back to
the grid or buildings during peak demand times The unique Airport Innova– tion Lab was launched to reduce barriers for innovators to break into the aviation industry. Its goals are to develop concepts that can enhance the passenger experience, improve operational efficiency, increase revenues and decrease costs. The 325-squaremetre space offers a functional mini-terminal area with ticket counters and a bag claim carousel, all without passenger or security concerns to work around. “Our Innovation Lab was founded to develop new services and amenities that truly enhance the airport experience for everyone flying through San Diego,” said Kimberly Becker, president and CEO of SAN. “We really feel good about the wide range of ideas this group of innovators is bringing to the Lab and I look forward to the good feelings their innovations will create for our customers.” After completing the accelerator program, innovators may have the opportunity to further test concepts at SAN. Ultimately, they could win a contract at SAN and/or gain entry to other airports and analogous industries, such as transportation centres, convention centres, shopping malls and larger venues such as ball parks, theme parks and hotels. In return for providing the space and the accelerator programme, SAN negotiates a revenue share for a period of five to 10 years. The first highly successful concept AtYourGate, which delivers food and other retail items to passengers, flight crews and airport employees at their gates, is currently in place at SAN and five other airports.

The public is invited to learn how the City of Richmond is addressing growth and change in the community at a new series of Community Information Sessions being held this month. These new sessions have been created to better inform and engage community members about City-wide plans, policies and initiatives that guide development and how they are being implemented. Topics to be covered will include planning and development, transportation, affordable housing and sustainability. In 2019, four sessions are planned, with three sessions held this spring—the first one was on May 2nd—and one to be held in the fall: Community Information Session 2 Thursday, May 16 4pm to 8pm Cambie Community Centre – 12800 Cambie Road Community Information Session 3 Thursday, June 13 Noon to 4pm West Richmond Community Centre – 9180 No. 1 Road Community Information Session 4 Thursday, October 24 4pm to 8pm Richmond Cultural Centre – 7700

Staff from the departments of Development Applications, Policy Planning, Affordable Housing, Transportation and Sustainability will attend the sessions. “The Best Little School in Richmond!”
SEA ISLAND ELEMENTARY Seeking students for 2019-20 school year.
Air Transat took delivery of its first Airbus A321neoLR (long range) earlier this month, with 14 more to be added in the coming months and years. Air Transat’s second Airbus A321neoLR is set to land in June, with four more arriving in fall 2019. New planes will be added gradually, leading to an all-Airbus fleet by 2022. Following are some cool specs about the A321neoLR for aviation aficionados. Maximum takeoff weight: 97,000-kilograms That’s 713 times heavier than Canadian strongman Rev. Kevin Fast, Guinness World Record
holder for pulling three fire trucks in 2017. Length: 44.5-metres Three times longer than a standard yellow school bus, which measures 12.5-metres. Wingspan: 35.8-metres Three times the wingspan of the first plane invented by the Wright brothers in 1903—that wingspan measure 12.3-metres. Speed: Up to 902-kilometres per hour, with a long-range cruising speed of 858-kilometres That’s about 80 per cent of the speed of sound. Cruising altitude: 11,887 metres That’s as high as 21 ½ CN
Towers stacked on top of each other. Range: At 74,000-kilometres, the longest of any single-aisle jetliner In one year, an Air Transat A321neoLR can transport as many as 140,000 people. Engineering: Powered by 2 Pratt & Whitney PW113G-JM geared turbofans, with a maximum thrust of 145KN In easyspeak—it rivals 28 Formula One race cars in horsepower, and the power produced by both engines could supply electricity for 30 standard apartments. Transat AT Inc., the parent company of Canadian leisure airline Air Transat, is in preliminary discussions with more than one party concerning a potential sale of the company. According to a statement issued by Transat, these discussions result from expressions of interest that have been made to the company and are at a preliminary stage.
A committee of independent directors has been formed to evaluate the proposals and make recommendations to the Board of Directors in the best interests of the company and its stakeholders. Based in Montreal, Transat A.T. Inc. is an integrated international tourism company specializing in holiday travel. Vacation packages, hotel accommoda-
tion and air travel are offered under the Transat and Air Transat brands to some 60 destinations in more than 25 countries in the Americas and Europe. Transat’s 5,000 employees have been assured that the current talks with potential buyers of the company have no impact on them, nor on day-to-day operations, which are continuing as usual.
Magazine app designed to extend life to inflight publications Global travellers and frequent fliers can now download the latest inflight magazines via a brand-new Altitude inflight magazines app. Touted by its creators as a “one-stop mobile travel resource,” the app, which is available for iOs and Android, provides one-click, download access to dozens of magazines. Readers may sort magazines by airline name, magazine name and geographic region, which allows travellers to be informed about the country or region to which they are travelling.
Additionally, users of the app receive notifications when new issues of their favourite titles are available. The app is the brainchild of Vancouver aviation enthusiast Henry Tenby and his Dutch partner Niels Dam. According to Tenby, “The Altitude app extends each airline’s latest travel destination articles and airline news to an engaged and affluent global readership audience that exists beyond the traditional seatback pocket. We’re opening it up to a truly global audience.” Unlike inflight magazines,
which usually have a shelf life of one month, the Altitude app seeks to extend the readership of inflight content to thousands of new readers and travellers beyond their travel period. “The app promotes an airline’s brand and destinations to potentially millions of global readers who may not yet be passengers, but could very well be in the future,” said Tenby. Altitude’s launch partners are a diverse group of seven international airline participants. Talks are also currently underway with Canadian airlines, among others.

Study finds Canadians drive their cars only four per cent of the time A study by Angus Reid Global has revealed that Canadian cars are sitting idle 96 per cent of the time. The study was conducted in partnership with Turo, a peer-topeer car sharing marketplace. The study conducted in Feburary 2019 and fielded among a representative sample of 2,017 Canadians found that on average, Canadian car owners are behind the wheel for just 380 hours per year. For the remaining 8,380 hours, cars are sitting idle. Car-owning culture Canada is very much a carowning culture: the study found that 84 per cent of Canadians have a car, with an additional nine per cent of Canadians who don’t have a car but would like to have one. The proportion of car owners is lowest among people aged 18-34 (68 per cent); however, they are also the age group that is most interested in owning a car in the future (22 per cent). owners have only one car, multicar ownership is a reality in Canada with 37 per cent of car owners having two or plus cars for personal use. Canadians continue to have a special relationship with their cars, with more than half of Canadians (55 per cent) saying that they feel emotionally attached to their cars and 61 per cent of respondents saying that they have a “dream car” that they would like to own. In the 18-34 age group, almost one Canadian in five (18 per cent) say their dream car is a Tesla. Car ownership costs The study found that the average market value of cars in circulation in Canada is $27,236 at the time of purchase, with Canadians spending thousands of dollars every year on car
payments ($5,149 per year on average for those who lease or finance), insurance ($1,499 per year) and upkeep ($821 per year). Significant differences were found in the cost of car ownership by province: for example, Quebec car owners pay on average 47 per cent less for insurance than Ontario car owners ($74/month in Quebec vs. $140/month in Ontario). In general, 45 per cent of Canadian car owners think the cost of owning a car is too high, while British Columbia residents are more likely than the rest of the country to say this (51 per cent). The overwhelming majority of Canadians (90 per cent) take some sort of action to offset the mounting expenses including washing their own car (65 per
cent), hunting for deals on gas (63 per cent), doing their own car repairs (36%) and carpooling (22 per cent). Cars sitting idle While most Canadians own cars and spend thousands of dollars every year on them, it turns out that Canadians don’t use their cars very much. The average Canadian car owners only spends about seven hours per week (7.3) behind the wheel, meaning that the car sits idle 96 per cent of the time. One Canadian car owner in five (21 per cent) drives two hours or less in an average week
and almost two-thirds (63 per cent) of Canadians don’t drive their car every day. 41 per cent of those who have a second car say that it never or almost never gets used. Can’t live without it Despite Canadians using their cars a small portion of the time, they still rely heavily on them for their day-to-day. Three-quarters (78 per cent) of Canadians think that it would be impossible for them to not have a car, and half of Canadians (49 per cent) say they would have to change jobs if they didn’t have a car. These
proportions jump to respectively 89 per cent and 58 per cent in rural areas, highlighting the relative lack of alternative transportation options (car sharing, ride-hailing, public transportation) in rural Canada. Ambivalent future for car ownership At a time when individual car ownership is challenged by the rise of mobility services and th e progress in the field of autonomous vehicles, the study paints an ambivalent future for car ownership in Canada. Many Canadians (41 per cent) wish they had better options so they wouldn’t need a car, and 39 per cent of respondents indicated that, at some point in their lives, they would prefer to not own a car. A large proportion of Canadians (43 per cent) also expressed concerns over their car’s impact on the environment, with a significantly higher proportion of environmental concern among 18-34-year-olds and in Quebec. However, only 11 per cent of Canadian car owners have plans to get rid of their car within the next 10 years.
