KNOWING BC INSIDE AND OUT. IT’S OUR THING TOO.

We Are Your Airport There are so many things that make YVR a successful airport—from our awardwinning customer care to our local connections and strategic vision—and they all stem from our unique operating model. YVR is, quite literally, your airport. We have no shareholders and we reinvest all profits back into the airport, constantly improving it for everyone. We are not government run and instead we have to compete with airports around the world, spurring innovation. And we have a deep connection to our region, with a community-appointed Board that keeps your interests in mind. The result? As a business, we are able to lead the competition while supporting innovation and growth. Thanks to our unique model, we are able to pursue unique non-aeronautical revenue sources, such as our BorderXpress kiosks and the Designer Outlet Centre, which help us keep costs low for airlines and attract air services. This is important because every new airline or service spurs job activity at YVR and across the province, as we constantly grow. As an airport, our unique model allows us to invest in constant improvements—making YVR an attractive option for passengers and airlines. We are in the second year of a 20-year expansion program and in the coming years we will open a new parkade, an international pier and one of Canada’s largest GeoExchange systems. And all the while, we constantly improve our terminal experience, working on our baggage system, upholding a great customer care program, launching new offerings and more.

As a community contributor, our model compels us to support the people who live and work in our region. We give back, with an annual $1+ million community investment program that supports over 50 great organizations. And we seek to make new relationships. In 2017, we signed the historic, 30-year Musqueam Indian Band – YVR Airport Sustainability & Friendship Agreement , a major achievement that will see YVR and Musqueam achieve a sustainable and mutually beneficial future for our community. As a world-class hub, we stand behind a strong mission—to connect B.C. proudly to the world. YVR is the first and last impression of B.C. for millions of people around the world, every year. It’s also the first sign of home for many travellers. Thus, we have an opportunity to represent the best of B.C. in our airport and we do this by showcasing incredible art, providing a warm and welcoming experience and leading the way in sustainable growth—all thanks to our unique operating model. Interestingly, most people are not aware that we are a community-based, not-for-profit organization. Through recent surveying, we discovered that only 17% of British Columbians are aware of YVR’s unique operating model and its many benefits. So, we are spreading the word. You will start to see some creative pieces, like the images in this month’s Skytalk edition, highlighting our unique airport. I encourage you to spread the word. After all, our unique model is important to us and, I strongly believe, it’s important to you. It’s something to be proud of and something worth protecting.

Construction projects at YVR: June update

There are several key projects currently taking place at YVR that will enhance the airport experience. This includes some of the biggest sustainability projects to date, including new parking options, terminal expansions and more. This is all possible due to YVR’s unique operating structure. The multi-year expansion project currently underway will help YVR meet growing passenger demand and better connect British Columbians and local businesses to the world, while improving the airport experience for everyone. Terminal • There may be intermittent noise at U.S. check-in, U.S. pre-board screening area as well as U.S. Customs during

daytime hours. This work is being done to improve airport processes for transfer passengers. • Construction for a new entrance to gate E85 is underway. Once complete in March 2020, it will connect passengers from Level 3 to the Level 2 remote stand operation (RSO) facility. This work includes the addition of new elevators and escalators. • As construction begins on several of YVR’s new food and beverage and retail options, passengers can expect to see various hoarding around the terminal. • As part of the International Pier D expansion project, various work is taking place. This will take place airside and may include noisy work.

Given that there are 24-hour operations taking part in this area of the terminal, there may be potential disruption for those with flights at nearby gates. In and Around Sea Island • Various work is continuing in the old Value Lot (adjacent to the Parkade) for the construction of a new six-storey parking lot and Central Utilities Building. A new toll plaza is now open and is the first permanent structure of the new Parkade. Please follow all directional signage in the area. • Work is taking place outside International Arrivals on level 2 in Chester Johnson Park. In order to facilitate the work, a section of the park is

closed. The pet relief area and Japadog will remain in the current location. • A period of significant excavation from the project site has begun. In line with YVR’s commitment to sustainability and construction waste diversion, the valuable earthworks materials will be transported to an unused parcel of land south of the BCIT campus on Russ Baker Way. While there are no current plans to develop this site, this is an opportunity to re-use and recycle valuable materials to prepare the land for potential future development. This waste diversion project is expected to prevent more than 215,000 cubic metres of soil from landfill this year alone.

BorderXpress technology is a self-service solution that automates the administrative functions of border control with a two-step process that makes border processing faster and more efficient and can reduce passenger wait times by more than 60 per cent.

Vancouver Airport Authority was recognized last month as a winner at PwC Canada’s 2019 Vision to Reality (V2R) awards for its self-service border control solution BorderXpress. V2R is PwC Canada’s annual program aimed at recognizing and celebrating the most forwardthinking organizations in Canada. The awards are judged by an independent panel of judges and include four categories: The Visionary, the Builder, the Reinventor and the Accelerator. BorderXpress technology, which won the award in the Builder category, was developed by Innovative Travel Solutions (ITS), an independent business unit within YVR, which delivers industry-leading automated border control solutions that are proven to enhance the overall traveller experience and airport performance. In addition to Vancouver Airport Authority’s win in the Builder category, British Columbia’s Ministry of Health, GHGSat Inc., and Sun Life Financial were also named winners in the other respective categories.

“With increased demand for air travel and changing border regulations, the industry must embrace innovation to increase efficiencies and improve passenger satisfaction, while maintaining the highest security standards,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. BorderXpress is a self-service border control solution that uses an efficient two-step process to expedite the border clearance process, reducing passenger wait times by more than 60 per cent. This results in cost and space savings and allows border officers to focus on maintaining the safety of the border. “Never has there been a more important time to bring together a community of innovators to encourage, support and value Canada’s most forwardthinking organizations,” said Chris Dulny, chief innovation officer, PwC Canada. Since 2009, ITS has sold more than 1,600 kiosks at 44 airport, seaport and onboard sites around the world, helping more than 250-million passengers to clear borders safely and securely.

National AccessAbility Week celebrated at YVR

Honeybees take flight at YVR

Honeybees are the world’s most important pollinator of food crops and are crucial for sustaining life on Earth.

Vancouver Airport Authority is continually working to improve the air and water quality and the amount of protected wildlife that surrounds the airport, with the aim of ensuring a more eco-conscious airport. As part of this mandate, YVR recently collaborated with Alvéole, a Canadian-based social beekeeping company, and installed Italian honeybee hives

on the north side of Sea Island. The addition of these hives will increase the bee population, help pollinate the vegetation that sustains Sea Island’s wildlife and play an important role in the ecohealth of the community. Italian honeybees were chosen because they are well-known for their mild temperament, which makes them perfect Sea Island cohabitants.

National AccessAbility Week (NAAW), which takes place each year, starting on the last Sunday in May, is a time when accessibility and inclusion is promoted across communities and workplaces to celebrate the contributions of Canadians with disabilities. It is also an opportunity to recognize the efforts of those who are actively removing barriers and ensuring persons with disabilities have an equal chance to participate in all aspects of Canadian society. YVR strives to offer a positive experience to all travellers who visit the airport by ensur-

ing that it is fully accessible and inclusive and in honour of National AccessAbility Week recognized its many community and accessibility partners who help ensure everyone who wants to fly, can fly. YVR’s accessibility features include hearing loops at all information counters, visual paging across the terminal, sign language display on monitors in the arrivals area, automatic doors, contrasting floor tiles to help guide those with visual impairment or partial vision loss, heat-sensitive speakers with self-adjusting volume, animal relief areas, curb-to-

gate assistance pre-arranged with airlines, and more. In December of last year, YVR was officially rated ‘Accessibility Certified Gold’ under the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification program—the first airport to receive the gold rating and the highest-rated building in the program. In 2018, YVR welcomed 25.9-million passengers and one of its top priorities is providing an accessible and inclusive airport for everyone, including detailed travel guides to help and support customers preparing for air travel.

Canada’s airports prepare to navigate a connected future

Booster Juice transitions to compostable straws

Following two intensive days of discussion and planning at Airport Canada 2019, held last month in Kelowna, Canada’s airports are preparing for a more connected future. With changes coming in the airline sector and the Government of Canada’s announcement that airport security screening will be placed in the hands of private management, the biennial event, held by the Canadian Airports Council (CAC), attracted more than 200 aviation leaders from across North America. Conference delegates heard from senior executives and subject matter experts representing airports, airlines and government. “Every decade or so it seems that the aviation sector upends itself,” said CAC chair and airport director of the Kelowna

Booster Juice is in the Domestic Terminal, Level 3 before security.

International Airport, Sam Samaddar. “We could not have chosen a better time to have everyone together in one place, talking everything through. Canada’s airports are determined to offer an efficient and respectful experience to an increasingly diverse and growing group of travellers. After two days of discussion among ourselves and with our airline and government partners, I think we identified a lot of the pressure points and can see a clear path forward.” A highlight of the conference was a keynote address by U.S. Consul General Katherine Dhanani, who stressed the strong bonds between the U.S. and Canada and the many initiatives underway to help ease air border processing. Panel and session discussions

included topics such as how airports around the world are dealing with drone incursions; how officials and businesses on both sides of the border are working to enhance preclearance and other border services; how the changes in airline sector might affect airports and travellers; how airports work with and for their communities; and the challenges and opportunities for regional aviation service. With 54 members representing more than 100 airports, including the National Airports System (NAS) airports and most passenger service airports in every province and territory, CAC members handle virtually all Canadian air cargo and international passenger traffic and 90 per cent of domestic passenger traffic.

Despite the City of Vancouver’s postponement of the ban on plastic straws and Styrofoam until April 2020, Booster Juice locations across Canada are currently transitioning to compostable straws. Known for their signature smoothies, Booster Juice has a unique product that cannot be easily consumed without a straw and finding a compostable option that offered a similar look and feel was no easy task for the company. “We worked closely with our supplier, Stone Straw, to develop the right straw for our product, fine tuning every detail, including the packaging and colour,” said Malcolm Wilson, Booster Juice chief operating officer. “Our purple compostable straws

can now be easily recognized by customers and come in one size, which can be used in all of our beverages.” Stone Straw’s eco-friendly straws are made from renewable, plant-based materials that are also certified compostable as per ASTM D6400. This means that in 180 days the straws will

5

decompose to 90 per cent CO2 and 10 per cent biomass (humussoil) in an industrial or municipal composter. Booster Juice will have completed its transition to the new purple, single-use compostable straws, not just in British Columbia but nationwide, by the end of this month.

Air Canada and Drone Delivery Canada sign sales agreement Air Canada has entered into a sales agency agreement with Drone Delivery Canada (DDC) through which Air Canada Cargo will market DDC’s drone delivery services in Canada. DDC will benefit from Air Canada Cargo’s expertise and ability to develop, promote and sell DDC services through Air Canada Cargo’s marketing and sales technology channels in Canada. The specifics of the agreement will be made clear once DDC routes pass regulatory approval from Transport Canada, the two companies said. Air Canada Cargo has agreed not to use any other drone delivery service. Tony Di Benedetto, chief

executive officer of DDC, called the agreement “transformational” for the drone delivery industry. DDC is a public company based in Toronto, which was founded in 2014. The company’s drones range from the Sparrow, which can carry up to 4.5-kilograms of cargo, to the Condor, which can deliver 181 kilograms and travel 200 kilometres. “Air Canada is pleased to partner with Drone Delivery Canada, a leading player in today’s emerging drone industry,” said Tim Strauss, vice president of cargo at Air Canada. “We believe drone technology has the potential to offer the cargo community cost-effective solutions to complex issues relat-

De Havilland aircraft of Canada returns to the skies Longview Aviation Capital Corp., manager of a portfolio of long-term investments in the Canadian aerospace industry, has launched De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited—the trade name of the subsidiary company that will operate the worldwide Dash 8 aircraft business. Longview has acquired the entire Dash 8 program including

the 100, 200 and 300 series and the in-production Q400 program from Bombardier Inc. The Dash 8 joins Longview’s comprehensive portfolio of aircraft programs, including the Twin Otter program and the DHC-1 through DHC-7 series, as well as the former Canadair CL-215, CL-215T, and CL-415 waterbomber aircraft.

“We are particularly proud to introduce De Havilland Aircraft of Canada as an operating company and return the De Havilland Canada brand to prominence in the global aerospace industry,” said David Curtis, chairman, Longview Aviation Capital. “The iconic De Havilland name dates back almost 100 years and is responsible for some of the most

renowned aircraft in aviation history. With a new corporate identity that draws on the rich brand heritage, we are excited about the opportunities we see ahead for this company, and for the Dash 8 aircraft.” De Havilland Aircraft will continue to produce, service and support Dash 8 and Q400 aircraft under land lease agreements,

which extend until 2023. Todd Young, a 30-year veteran of Bombardier who most recently was responsible for the Q-Series program, will lead the business as chief operating

IATA and Star Alliance extend travel document cooperation

Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s director general and CEO in a signing ceremony with Jeffrey Goh, CEO Star Alliance, at IATA’s 75th annual general meeting in Seoul, Korea.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Star Alliance airline network have renewed their collaboration on traveller document verification to improve the passenger experience. Star Alliance and IATA have agreed that IATA’s Timatic AutoCheck solution will continue to power Automated Document Check (ADC) for Star Alliance member carriers. IATA Timatic AutoCheck enables Star Alliance customers checking-in at the airport counter or online to verify that their travel documents are valid and complete for the entire journey, including any transit point before travel begins. This delivers several significant benefits:

• Preventing passengers from being denied entry to a country on arrival, because of missing or invalid documents • Enabling a seamless experience when travel encompasses multiple carriers. Passengers will no longer need to see an agent to have their travel documents checked and rechecked at transit points • Avoiding the passenger fine to airlines for transporting inadmissible passengers “Digital transformation is essential to meeting evolving passenger expectations today and into the future,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s director general and CEO. “Star’s selection of Timatic will give its customers a better experience.”

special meeting of shareholders, expected to take place in July. Onex is headed by Gerry Schwartz, who attempted a takeover bid for Air Canada in 1999. That bid was abandoned after an unfavourable court ruling. Onex was also part of a group that attempted to purchase Australia’s Qantas Airways in 2007. The acquisition of WestJet is valued at $5 billion including assumed debt. Onex will pay $31

Quebec firm Group Mach makes rival bid for Transat Last month, Air Canada announced it had entered into an exclusive agreement with tour operator Transat A.T. to acquire the company, subject to completing a 30-day due diligence period. The transaction was valued at $520-million or $13 per share. Quebec real-estate developer Group Mach Inc., with potential support from the Quebec government, has now offered a rival cash bid of $14 per share, valued at more than $1 billion. Transat’s exclusive negotiations with Air Canada will expire at the end of this month and both companies have stated that

there is no assurance a definitive agreement will be reached on the transaction. Air Canada has all necessary funding to complete the transaction, which is not subject to financing conditions and does not require government or taxpayer assistance. Group Mach’s offer is conditional on the Quebec government providing approximately $120 million in financing. Transat offers vacation packages that include hotel accommodation and air travel under its Transat and Air Transat brands. Its airline unit was co-founded in 1986 by current Quebec premier Francois Legault.

Bombardier to sell commercial jet business to Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi’s MRJ regional jet is the first airliner designed and produced in Japan since the NAMC YS-11 of the 1960s.

The CRJ (Canadair Regional Jet) aircraft is a family of regional airliners manufactured by Bombardier, which the company claims to be the most successful family of regional jets in the world.

Tokyo-based Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. is in talks with Montreal-based Bombardier to purchase it’s CRJ regional jet program. Mitsubishi produces the MRJ regional jet, a rival to Bombardier’s CRJ, with first delivery slated for mid-2020.

Bombardier is the secondlargest producer of regional jets and an agreement with Mitsubishi would result in the Japanese company becoming the biggest challenger to Embraer’s commercial aircraft, which has been acquired by Boeing.

per share for the airline, which will be operated as a privately held company. “The good news is that Onex is looking to maintain WestJet as a Calgary-based airline,” said CUPE 4070 president Chris Rauenbusch. “They’ve committed to no job losses and to WestJet’s expansion plans. We will hold them to that promise.”

Swiss aerospace company, AMAC, and Italian car design firm Pininfarina have presented a cabin concept for the Airbus A350-900, which aims to make travellers forget they are on a jet and instead feel they are in the comfort of a home.

The inspiration came from Pininfarina’s eclectic design expertise, which ranges from architecture, nautical, automotive and aviation. This cabin concept is designed to create a comfortable and enjoyable multifunctional space in which travellers can relax, work, dine, and hold meetings. The welcoming area of the open space concept cabin is equipped with a wet bar for entertaining. There is a relaxation area with design sofas located across from a large window, where travellers can enjoy the view. A dining area, which can be also used as a meeting space, complements the design of the lounge. “What we see today from Pininfarina is a whole new kind of cabin, harnessed with clever human input that manifests itself

into areas that anyone can work in, relax and utilize,” said Waleed Muhiddin, AMAC aerospace director business development & marketing. “The work that has gone into this concept sets the bar for the future, taking into account harmonized and social spaces, new technologies and exotic materials. “Airbus has created a wonderful new wide-body platform and we are excited to see how much attention it can create in the private aviation market.” Founded by Battista “Pinin” Farina in 1930, Pininfarina has been employed by a wide variety of automobile manufacturers to design dream vehicles. Since the 1980s, Pininfarina has been a leading designer in the aviation sector, designing interiors for private jets and commercial aircraft.

Air New Zealand plans future growth around Boeing’s 787-10 Dreamliner Air New Zealand plans to add the largest Boeing 787 Dreamliner model to its fleet with a commitment to buy eight 787-10 airplanes valued at $2.7 billion. The carrier, known for its global network and long-range operations, says the 787-10 complements its current 787-9 and 777 fleet by offering more seats and greater efficiency to grow its business. “This is a hugely important decision for our airline,” said Air New Zealand chief executive officer Christopher Luxon. “With the 787-10 offering around 15 per cent more space for both customers and cargo than the 787-9, this investment creates the platform for our future strategic direction and opens up new opportunities to grow.” The 787-10 is the largest member of the Dreamliner family. At 68 metres long, the 787-10 can serve up to 330 passengers in a standard two-class configuration, about 40 more than the

787-9 airplane. Powered by a suite of new technologies, the 787-10 set a new benchmark for fuel efficiency and operating economics when it entered commercial service last year. The airplane allows operators to achieve 25 per cent better fuel efficiency per seat compared to the previous airplanes. Air New Zealand was a global launch customer for the 787-9 and today operates 13 aircraft of the Dreamliner variant. With another 787-9 on the way and the 787-10 airplanes in the future, the airline’s Dreamliner fleet will grow to 22. Air New Zealand’s widebody fleet also includes seven 777300ERs and eight 777-200ERs, which it is progressively replacing with the 787-10 aircraft. As part of its efforts to maintain an efficient and reliable fleet, Air New Zealand utilizes several Boeing Global Services solutions, including Airplane Health Management. This digi-

LIMITED TIME OFFER DURING LAUNCH: The Flying-V is propelled by the most fuel-efficient turbofan engines that currently exist. In its present design it still flies on kerosene, but can easily be adapted to make use of innovations in the propulsion system through the use of electrically boosted turbofans, for example.

KLM is partnering with Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) to continue making aviation more sustainable, starting with their innovative flight concept known as the “Flying-V.” This concept embraces a different approach to aircraft design, integrating the passenger cabin, cargo hold and fuel tanks in the wings to make a V-shaped aircraft. This improved aerodynamic shape will reduce the aircraft’s weight and use 20 per cent less

fuel, but still fit the existing airport infrastructure that currently house the A350. KLM has also invested in a biofuel plant set to open in 2022 and committed to a 10-year contract for 75,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel per year. KLM is the first airline in the world to invest in sustainable aviation fuel at a large scale and continues to be a leader in airline sustainability through this relationship with TU Delft.

During a test flight, the 12,000th aircraft delivered by Airbus took a special route in the sky over Quebec.

Last month, Airbus celebrated the delivery of its 12,000th aircraft. The aircraft was an A220100, assembled in Mirabel, Canada and handed over to U.S.based Delta Air Lines. The aircraft is the 12th A220 delivered to date to Delta Air Lines since the carrier received its first A220 in October 2018.

Delta is the first U.S. airline to operate the A220 and is the largest A220 customer, with an order for 90 aircraft. This milestone delivery of a Canadian-made Airbus aircraft to a U.S.-based airline highlights the growing presence of Airbus in North America. Airbus delivered its first air-

craft, an A300B2 to Air France, in 1974. Fast forward to 2010, Airbus handed over its 6,000th aircraft, 36 years after its first. The pace continued to accelerate, taking Airbus just nine years to double that number, reaching 12,000th Airbus aircraft delivery on May 20, 2019.

Auto Talk Koenigsegg Jesko World Tour included an exclusive Canadian debut on Sea Island

The Koenigsegg Jesko with the Weissach dealership team at its exclusive Canadian debut in the London Air hangar on Sea Island.

It is touted as the world’s fastest megacar and it made an exclusive Canadian debut at the London Air hangar in Richmond, B.C., on May 31, 2019, before heading off to Germany. “We are extremely excited to welcome the Koenigsegg Jesko to Vancouver as part of its World Tour and share the experience with fellow supercar enthusiasts,” said Asgar Virji, president of Weissach Vancouver, Canada’s authorized Koenigsegg dealer. “Koenigsegg’s simulations say that the Jesko should Solution for June 2019 Crossword.

be the world’s first 300mph car. It truly is a technological marvel.” Unveiled in March at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, the Koenigsegg Jesko is the successor to the Agera RS, which broke the production car world speed record in November 2017. At its heart, the Jesko features one of the most powerful production internal combustion engines on the planet. Re-designed with a 5.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that produces 1,280-horsepower on standard gasoline and 1,600-horsepower on E85 biofuel, it also features the world’s lightest V8 crankshaft. The revolutionary new ninespeed Koenigsegg Light Speed transmission (LST) seven-clutch gearbox is perhaps arguably its most impressive component— capable of upward and downward gear changes with lightening-fast precision results in seam-

less acceleration/deceleration. But that’s not all. Named after the father of company founder Christian von Koenigsegg, the Jesko boasts a power-to-weight ratio greater than 1:1, advanced aerodynamics offering more than 1,000-kilograms of downforce, active rearwheel steering and a re-designed carbon fibre chassis. Its shape takes many cues from the aerodynamic Agera, but with more of a fighter jet stance, thanks to a taller roof line. Being 30mm taller and 40mm longer than the Agera, this allows for better ingress and egress, a more spacious cabin and better visibility. Jesko’s production will begin at the end of 2020 at the rate of one per week, totalling 125 cars. The model can be specified in either of two variants—track or top speed—and has a starting price tag of around US$2.8 million.

The ‘Just hook my car up to the computer’ folk tale This myth has grown for many years. While connecting a diagnostic computer to a vehicle’s computer(s) is a crucial part of many diagnostic procedures, doing this will not tell the technician what is wrong—it only points to the problem area. It is my suspicion that car owners were told that any or all problems could be diagnosed by “the computer” by manufacturers and salesmen who wanted to brag about their technology and how it makes their cars easy to fix. While diagnostic information accessed from a vehicle’s computer is often vital in order to solve driveability concerns, additional tests are required to confirm which component of the system is faulty. For example, when the “check engine lamp” comes on, the trouble codes generated and the data available on the scan tool/diagnostic computer is based on information that is received from numerous

sensors, not simply the engine lamp. For example, if the code is for an oxygen sensor defect, the vehicle’s computer has no way of knowing if the sensor is reading the information correctly or if a wire to the sensor has broken or if the computer itself has an internal defect. Very specific tests must be

conducted from the information gathered on the diagnostic computer, and this is where a technician’s skill, resources and other diagnostic equipment come into play to find the real problem. So, forget the “plug it in for diagnosis” myth, more thorough tests are always required to be certain the real cause of the concern is found.

At 74 years strong, the Steveston Salmon Festival, presented by YVR, is better than ever. This year, activities will extend from Britannia Shipyards to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery and to its traditional home in Steveston Park, ensuring a truly epic Canada Day celebration on July 1. “The Steveston Salmon Festival is a beloved Richmond tradition and a great way to celebrate Canada Day,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “This year it will be bigger and better than ever as we fully integrate our other July 1 celebrations, including the popular evening fireworks over the Fraser River, under the festival’s banner.” Headlining the Main Stage, presented by TD Bank, will be Canadian rock radio mainstays, 54-40. Vancouver’s own Bend Sinister and Steveston staples Urban Myth and Line 49 will also hit the stage to help celebrate Canada’s birthday. The music won’t stop there, Steveston Village will host nine stages with more than 50 performances, highlighting some of the

best local talent Richmond and the Lower Mainland has to offer. Returning will be the crowd favourites; the region’s largest Canada Day parade, preceded by a children’s bicycle parade, the longstanding and mouth-watering traditions of the salmon barbecue and chow mein feast, plus the Japanese Cultural Show, Trade Show, Horticultural Show and much more. Festival goers will have a chance to check out Sammy’s Fun Zone, featuring carnival fun for the whole family and a stage with kid-friendly performances all day. Stop over at the car show for a peek at some of the Lower Mainland’s finest vintage rides, and enjoy a performance by Elvis! To cap off the day of celebration the Steveston Village, proud Canadians can line the waterfront to enjoy a fantastic firework show, presented by Dueck GM. The Nikkei Memorial public art project will be officially unveiled in Richmond on Saturday, June 22. The project is a public memorial acknowledging the departure of Japanese Canadians from Steveston and their subsequent return after the period of internment. Commissioned by the City of Richmond in partnership with the Steveston Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre Advisory Committee, the project was designed by Hapa Collaborative. A concept design was created from meetings with stakeholder groups and individuals who shared their experiences from before, during and after the internment period. The design pays tribute to Issei (first) and Nisei (second) generations and

provides a metaphor for resilience. These themes will be expressed through landscaped pathways, plantings and design elements including paving patterns based on hand-made origami mats created by seniors at the Steveston Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, a plum tree, stone monuments and lanterns. The Nikkei Memorial Public Art Project will be unveiled on Saturday, June 22, 2019 from 1pm to 2pm. The event will take place at Steveston Community Park, 4010 Moncton Street, beside the Steveston Tram building. For more information, contact the City of Richmond, Public Art Program at 604-247-4612 or visit richmond.ca/ publicart.
