KNOWING BC INSIDE AND OUT. IT’S OUR THING TOO.

We Are Your Airport There are so many things that make YVR a successful airport—from our awardwinning customer care to our local connections and strategic vision—and they all stem from our unique operating model. YVR is, quite literally, your airport. We have no shareholders and we reinvest all profits back into the airport, constantly improving it for everyone. We are not government run and instead we have to compete with airports around the world, spurring innovation. And we have a deep connection to our region, with a community-appointed Board that keeps your interests in mind. The result? As a business, we are able to lead the competition while supporting innovation and growth. Thanks to our unique model, we are able to pursue unique non-aeronautical revenue sources, such as our BorderXpress kiosks and the Designer Outlet Centre, which help us keep costs low for airlines and attract air services. This is important because every new airline or service spurs job activity at YVR and across the province, as we constantly grow. As an airport, our unique model allows us to invest in constant improvements—making YVR an attractive option for passengers and airlines. We are in the second year of a 20-year expansion program and in the coming years we will open a new parkade, an international pier and one of Canada’s largest GeoExchange systems. And all the while, we constantly improve our terminal experience, working on our baggage system, upholding a great customer care program, launching new offerings and more.

As a community contributor, our model compels us to support the people who live and work in our region. We give back, with an annual $1+ million community investment program that supports over 50 great organizations. And we seek to make new relationships. In 2016, we signed the historic, 30-year Musqueam Indian Band – YVR Airport Sustainability & Friendship Agreement, a major achievement that will see YVR and Musqueam achieve a sustainable and mutually beneficial future for our community. As a world-class hub, we stand behind a strong mission—to connect B.C. proudly to the world. YVR is the first and last impression of B.C. for millions of people around the world, every year. It’s also the first sign of home for many travellers. Thus, we have an opportunity to represent the best of B.C. in our airport and we do this by showcasing incredible art, providing a warm and welcoming experience and leading the way in sustainable growth—all thanks to our unique operating model. Interestingly, most people are not aware that we are a community-based, not-for-profit organization. Through recent surveying, we discovered that only 17% of British Columbians are aware of YVR’s unique operating model and its many benefits. So, we are spreading the word. You will start to see some creative pieces, like the images in this month’s Skytalk edition, highlighting our unique airport. I encourage you to spread the word. After all, our unique model is important to us and, I strongly believe, it’s important to you. It’s something to be proud of and something worth protecting.

Construction projects at YVR: July update

There are several key projects currently taking place at YVR that are designed to enhance the airport experience. These projects include some of the airport’s biggest sustainability projects to date, new parking options, terminal expansions and much more and are possible due to YVR’s unique not-forprofit, community-based operating structure. The multi-year expansion project currently underway will help YVR meet growing passenger demand and better connect British Columbians and local businesses to the world, while improving the airport experience for everyone. Terminal • There may be intermittent noise at U.S. check-in, U.S. pre-board screening area as well as U.S. Customs during daytime hours. This work is being done to improve the

airport’s processes for transfer passengers. • Construction for a new entrance to gate E85 is underway. Once complete in March 2020, it will connect passengers from Level 3 to the Level 2 remote stand operation (RSO) facility. This work includes the addition of new elevators and escalators. • As construction begins on several of YVR’s new foodand-beverage and retail options, passengers can expect to see various hoarding around the terminal. • As part of the International Pier D expansion project, various work is taking place. This will take place airside and may include noisy work. Given that there are 24-hour operations in this part of the terminal, this could potentially be disruptive for those with flights at nearby gates. If you

are looking for somewhere quiet, you can find seating in the creek area, near the food court. • Construction is starting this month near Transborder check-in to make several enhancements to the area. Work will include replacing the check-in kiosks with the newest model, movement of an HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning controls) unit, relocating the information counter and some other minor updates. In and Around Sea Island • Various work is continuing in the old Value Lot (adjacent to the Parkade) for the construction of a new six-storey parking lot and Central Utilities Building. A new toll plaza is now open and is the first permanent structure of the new Parkade. Please follow

all directional signage in the area. There are also several related projects nearby the site including: • Work taking place outside International Arrivals on level 2 in Chester Johnson Park. • In order to facilitate the work, a section of the park is closed. The pet relief area and Japadog will remain in the current location. • A period of significant excavation from the project site has begun. In line with YVR’s commitment to sustainability and construction waste diversion, the valuable earthworks materials will be transported to an unused parcel of land south of the BCIT campus on Russ Baker Way. While there are no current plans to develop this site, this is an opportunity to re-use and recycle valuable materials to prepare the land for poten-

This waste diversion project is expected to prevent more than 215,000 cubic metres of soil from landfill this year alone. • Construction is underway to prepare for Phase II of the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport. This phase is scheduled to open in Summer 2019 and will deliver more than 7,800 square metres of additional retail space. • YVR is planning to redevelop approximately 18 hectares of land on airport property in the Templeton area, adjacent to the Burkeville residential neighbourhood. The redevelopment will include a cargo and logistics facility and a linear greenspace for community use. Site preparation work is now underway to prepare the project site for redevelopment.

Construction Update

• Little Wings Daycare is relocating from their existing site to the south west corner of Miller Road and Templeton, adjacent to Sea Island Elementary and Park and Fly. This move is necessary due to their current lease ending. To prepare the area for this relocation, work includes preparation of a ditch crossing, as well as earthworks on the project site and installation of site services and utilities. Parking • A section of McDonald Road is closed for construction traffic only. This work is part of the project to extend the east apron for Remote Stand Operations. Founding members of Project Green YVR, a Vancouver Airport Authority initiative that helps Sea Island businesses limit their impact on the environment.

On May 22, 2019, Sea Island businesses were brought together to help launch Project Green YVR, an environmentally friendly sustainability initiative that will reduce waste, water and energy consumption. The businesses signing on as founding partners for the project have all been recognized for exceptional sustainability practices by YVR, demonstrating their commitment to improving the environment through energy and water conservation projects or through ambitious recycling targets. Founding businesses are: • Fairmont Vancouver Airport

• World Duty Free Group • McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport • MTU Maintenance Canada • Dexterra • SSP Canada Food Services Inc. • Harbour Air Project Green YVR aims to bring together Vancouver Airport Authority’s successful environmental engagement programs and further support efforts by Sea Island businesses to reduce waste, water and energy use, while saving money.

Additionally, the launch of Project Green YVR is designed to bring positive, lasting change beyond operations at the airport by building a community of environmental leaders who regularly get together to share ideas, receive training and work collaboratively to tackle environmental challenges. Sea Island businesses, who are not yet a part of this program, are encouraged to join a growing community of environmental leaders and become involved by signing on as a YVR Green Partner. Waste Wars at YVR, a winning strategy for all

Last month, YVR celebrated its fifth annual Waste Wars—a friendly competition that engages tenants on the importance of managing waste. The objective of Waste Wars is to evaluate food and beverage tenants on their habits and accuracy of sorting waste into YVR’s four waste streams, while helping YVR achieve its target of 50 per cent waste diversion by 2020. The rules of Waste Wars are simple: organic waste belongs in the green bin, plastics, paper and metals go in the appropriate recycling or container bins and the remaining goes in the garbage. In the world of YVR waste management, there is no higher accolade than being declared Waste Wars champion and it is one accompanied with superb prizes and bragging rights.

Every week, tenants’ bins were inspected by YVR’s waste experts and points were awarded based on the success of sorting. The better the tenant separated their waste, the more points they received. YVR’s waste warriors battled the bins, and after weeks of intense binning, digging and sorting, victories were claimed and the best bins at YVR were declared. There are two categories in the Waste Wars competition: Quick Service Restaurants (QSR) and Restaurants. YVR’s QSR Waste Wars champion was Thai Hang. This Vietnamese restaurant is no stranger to winning this competition, having done so in 2018. Once again, Thai Hang achieved a perfect Waste Wars score, having not a single cup, straw or napkin out of place. In 2019, five QSR tenants

tied for second with 41 points. All five second-place winners will also be recognized and awarded this year—Java U Café, Vera’s Burger Shack, Camden Food Co., Subway (D-Pier) and The Banh Shop.

In the Restaurants category, the champion was Lift with 39 out of a possible 42 points. In second place with 36 points was Globe at Fairmont and third place was taken by White Spot with 33 points. White Spot

is new to the podium for 2019. All these winners are the true champions of YVR’s environmental initiatives, and their success contributes to the airport’s goal of diverting 50 per cent of YVR waste from landfill.

A dedicated team from security provider Paladin Security helps passengers as they leave YVR, providing a variety of services including directing traffic and hailing taxis. This team was put to the test several months ago after a woman collapsed near a crosswalk. Immediately after the incident, two Paladin employees took action and ran over to the woman to see if she was alright. They notified YVR Operations and opened a conference line with paramedics and a ground transportation dispatcher.

Thanks to the Paladin team’s efforts, the passenger received immediate attention. The team demonstrated incredible teamwork and customer service in a difficult situation, working together seamlessly to help the passenger, all while ensuring curbside service was still operating and getting people on their way. The team was recognized with a YVR Star, the airport’s official recognition program, awarded for going above and beyond to ensure the safety and security of passengers travelling

WestJet granted first regulatory approval for acquisition by Onex

WestJet has received approval from Canada’s Minister of Transport for its proposed acquisition by private equity firm Onex to proceed. WestJet and Onex entered into the agreement on May 12, 2019, with Onex offering a cash buyout price at $31 for each outstanding share of WestJet. Receipt of the Minister of Transport’s approval was one of the conditions to close the acquisition agreement. “We welcome the decision by the Minister of Transport and we will continue to cooperate with the necessary authorities on

the remaining regulatory approvals,” said Ed Sims, WestJet president and CEO. The purchase is still subject to other closing conditions, including other regulatory approvals, approval by the securityholders of WestJet at a special meeting to be held on July 23, 2019, and final approval by the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta. Assuming the approval of the agreement by WestJet’s shareholders and the timely receipt of regulatory approvals, the transaction is expected to close in the latter part of 2019.

Jetlines granted aircraft slots at YVR

Startup ultra-low-cost airline Canada Jetlines has been granted slots at YVR to operate its first Winter Schedule when it launches operations in December 2019. According to a Jetlines news release, the slots will permit the airline to operate up to 10 flights per day and more than 1,000 flights during the airline’s first winter season from December 17, 2019 to March 28, 2020. The initial two Airbus A320 aircraft that Jetlines has secured through its partnership with SmartLynx will be hangered nightly at YVR, which Jetlines has stated will be its home airport and primary base of operations. “I am excited to share that all slots to operate our winter schedule have been awarded,” said Javier Suarez, Jetlines CEO. “It is significant for Jetlines as we work to commence operations out of Vancouver International Airport. The airport operates at a very high capacity in the winter season, as travellers plan trips to see family and friends, or to go

on a vacation. These slots will allow us to fly our first passengers for these special occasions at incredibly low fares—at a price point that most Canadians have not had the opportunity to fly at.” The ability for Jetlines to sell tickets and launch airline service remains subject to the completion of the airline licensing process, the receipt of applicable regulatory approvals and the completion of financing. Led by a board and management team with experience and expertise in low-cost airlines, start-ups and capital markets, Jetlines was granted an unprecedented exemption from the Government of Canada that will permit it to conduct domestic air services, while having up to 49 per cent foreign voting interests. In addition to operating flights across Canada, Jetlines plans to provide non-stop service from Canada to the U.S., Mexico and the Caribbean. For more information on Jetlines, visit jetlines.ca.

Boeing and Kitty Hawk Corporation have formed a strategic partnership to collaborate on future efforts to advance urban air mobility. The strategic partnership will bring together the innovation of Kitty Hawk’s Cora division with Boeing’s scale and aerospace expertise.

Headquartered in Mountain View, California, Kitty Hawk builds electric transportation solutions. The company gets its name from the beaches of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina where the Wright Brothers took flight for the first time in 1903. Kitty Hawk’s portfolio of vehicles includes Cora, a two-

person air taxi and Flyer, a vehicle for personalized flight. According to Boeing, the agreement with Kitty Hawk Corp. is part of its long-term strategy of entering into partnerships that enhance and accelerate growth and deliver key differentiators for Boeing’s customers.

Uber Elevate plans aerial ridesharing

The Uber Elevate Network includes five of the world’s most innovative aircraft manufacturers, each developing concepts for electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft built specifically for aerial ridesharing.

Uber plans to give riders the option of an affordable shared flight by 2023. The ridesharing company is working closely with federal and local policymakers to develop an aerial offering that’s safe, quiet, and environmentally conscious. Uber has convened leaders across industry and government—vehicle designers, manufacturers, investors, operators, infrastructure providers, policymakers, and regulators—to build this future of urban aviation. Uber recently announced Melbourne, Australia, will join Dallas, Texas and Los Angeles,

California in becoming the first cities to offer Uber Air flights, with the goal of beginning demonstrator flights in 2020 and commercial operations in 2023. A network of distributed Skyports is being planned to enable Uber Air operations. At scale, Skyports require all-new designs to handle an unprecedented number of takeoffs and landings. The top names in architecture, design, and engineering are devising solutions capable of handling up to 1,000 landings per hour, even within footprints as dense as 4,000 square metres.

Survey shows more B.C. parents relying on others to drive their kids A recent survey for conducted by Insights West for the British Columbia Automobile Association (BCAA), shows that busy B.C. parents are increasingly relying on others to get their kids where they need to go, raising concerns about unsafe travel and poor understanding of B.C.’s child passenger laws. Carpooling to field trips and camp, rides from relatives, friends and child-care providers are just a few transport realities that parents face, particularly in summer when schools are out. According to the BCAA survey, 77 per cent of B.C. parents with children in booster or child car seats, expect their kids to travel in another person’s vehicle this summer, with almost half (49 per cent) saying their kids are riding with others more than ever before. At the same time, parents have concerns, with 74 per cent saying that they worry about their children’s safety when they’re not the ones behind the wheel and 25 per cent admitting to not being sure that those driving know the relevant laws and liabilities. The latest statistics show that motor vehicle collisions remain the leading cause of accidental death for Canadian children. Child car seats, when used correctly, reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71 per cent and serious injury by 67 per cent. To make sure kids are safe when driving with others, BCAA offers the following advice: Driver responsibility – B.C. laws state that the driver

is responsible for a child’s safe transport and can be fined if they break the law and liable in an accident. Parents should make sure that the driver is clear on the laws and proper seat installation and fully accepts the responsibility. If a parent senses any hesitation or a lack of understanding of the seriousness of the task, it’s a good sign to explore another way to get their child where they need to go. Parent’s job – while the liability lies with the driver, it’s the parent’s job to understand and communicate the rules to the driver and make sure that the child car seat or booster seat meets Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and is installed properly. Plan ahead – parents are strongly advised to plan ahead. They should bring their own booster or child car seat and install it themselves. When installing the seat in another person’s vehicle, parents need to locate the Universal Anchor System or check that there is a lap/shoulder seatbelt and that it locks. If using a forward-facing child seat, locate the tether anchor

in the position where the car seat will be installed. In Canada, all forward-facing child seats must be tethered. Using hired services – Parents riding with their child in hired services such as taxis or ride shares, should ensure full responsibility for the child’s safety. BCAA encourages parents to never expect drivers of these services to have knowledge of child passenger safety or to help with it – even if a hired service offers child car seats as an option. BCAA provides information for parents as well as training child passenger educators in communities across the province. Its Community Child Car Seat Program donates child car seats to non-profit agencies and community groups working with families in need across the province and this year distributed its 10,000th child car seat. For information on their BCAA community programs focused on keeping kids safe on the road and at play through community programs such as School Safety Patrol, Child Passenger Safety and BCAA Play Here, visit bcaa.com.

The 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed launched Airspeeder— an airborne motorsport for a new generation of race fans—by dropping the flag on the world’s first full-size quadcopter racing event. Featuring two Mk II prototype Speeders racing head-tohead at speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour and an average of four metres above the ground, the global launch gave a flavour of the edge-of-the-seat action spectators can expect when the first manned Airspeeder World Championship gets underway in 2020. The Airspeeder race series is designed appeal to fans of traditional motorsport, while tapping into the rich heritage of air racing,

which has existed for almost as long as conventional motorsport. However, Airspeeder’s technology-focused approach will allow the racing to plug into the emerging and rapidly growing world of drone competition, as well as eSports, to carve out a new audience for aerial motorsport. The series will tour the world with Grand Prix held at iconic motorsport venues, intended to reflect the drama of the airborne action, with the series broadcast live to a global audience. Initially, each Grand Prix will feature head-to-head racing between 10 pilots competing for five teams. Developed by Alauda Racing, the Airspeeder concept has taken just four years to get off the

ground as the company seeks to make the jump from technologydriven start-up to world-wide motorsport brand. With a team consisting of aerospace engineers, designers, pilots and entrepreneurs, the Alauda Racing vision is to change the direction of motorsport. Solution for July 2019 Crossword.
