It has been just over two years since the historic Musqueam-YVR Sustainability and Friendship Agreement was signed. This 30-year agreement formally acknowledges YVR’s ongoing working relationship that has always, but unofficially, existed. Based on friendship and respect, the agreement ultimately supports YVR and Musqueam’s mutual drive to achieve a sustainable future for both communities. Last year, YVR issued a call to Musqueam artists for submissions of a design that represents this Friendship Agreement. The competition sought an approach that captured the strong YVR-Musqueam relationship and showcased a foundation of respect for both one another and the environment, while tying into YVR’s award-winning “Sense of Place” theme. On July 11, 2019, YVR celebrated the unveiling of the agreement’s new official emblem and formally rec-

Ongoing construction at YVR: August Update There are several key ongoing projects taking place at YVR, designed to enhance the airport experience. These include the airport’s biggest sustainability projects to date, new parking options, terminal expansions and much more. This is all possible due to YVR’s unique operating structure—a community-based organization that reinvest its profits back into the airport and region. The multi-year expansion project currently underway will help YVR meet growing passenger demand and better connect British Columbians and local businesses to the world, while improving the airport experience for everyone. Terminal • There may be intermittent noise at U.S. check-in, U.S. pre-board screening area as well as U.S. Customs during daytime hours. This work is being done to improve processes for transfer passengers. • Construction for a new entrance to gate E85 is underway. Once complete in March 2020, it will connect passengers from Level 3 to the Level 2 remote stand operation (RSO) facility. This work includes the addition of new elevators and escalators. • As construction begins on several of YVR’s new food and beverage and retail options, passengers can expect to see various hoarding around the terminal. • As part of the International Pier D expansion project, various work is taking place. This will take place airside and may include noisy work. Given that there are 24-hour operations in this part of the terminal, YVR understands that this could potentially be disruptive for those with flights at nearby gates. Travellers looking for somewhere quiet can find seating in the
creek area, near the food court. • Construction continues near Transborder check-in to make several enhancements to the area. Work will include replacing the check-in kiosks with the newest model, movement of an HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) unit, relocating the information counter and some other minor updates. • There is hoarding around a small section of the Domestic food court to prepare for the installation of a new centralized food court station. • Passengers travelling internationally will see ceiling scaffolding in the security screening area. This work is being done to prepare for the construction of a new passenger bridge. In and Around Sea Island • Construction continues on YVR’s new Parkade and Central Utilities Building. This includes work around the old Value Lot off Grant McConachie Way, as well as within the existing Parkade. There are various traffic control measures in place for cars arriving and departing from the terminal near this site. Please follow all road signage and flaggers in the area. • In the existing Parkade, customers will notice fencing, temporary pedestrian walkways and some blocked stalls. Work is for several upgrade projects including building new entry ramps as well as the installation of an automated parking guidance system. This will help decrease the time drivers spend circling, also reducing vehicle emissions. The new Parkade will be fitted with this parking guidance system. • As part of utilities work to connect the new GeoExchange system to the terminal, there are nightly
lane closures directly outside the old Value Lot on Grant McConachie Way. This work will be ongoing until December and will take place between 9:30pm and 7:00am. One lane will be maintained throughout for inbound traffic. • There are also several related projects near the site, including: • Work is taking place outside International Arrivals on level 2 in Chester Johnson Park. In order to facilitate the work, a section of the park is closed. The pet relief area and Japadog will remain in the current location. • A period of significant excavation from the project site has begun. In line with YVR’s commitment to sustainability and construction waste diversion, the valuable earthworks materials will be transported to an unused parcel of land south of the BCIT campus on Russ Baker Way. While there are no current plans to develop this site, this
is an opportunity to re-use and recycle valuable materials to prepare the land for potential future development. This waste diversion project is expected to prevent more than 215,000 cubic metres of soil from landfill this year alone. • Construction is underway to prepare for Phase II of the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport. This phase is scheduled to open in Summer 2019 and will deliver more than 7,800 square metres of additional retail space. • YVR is planning to redevelop

I take my role at the airport and the work we do here to keep people safe extremely seriously; and providing social and economic benefit for our community is important and I don’t take it lightly. But in the same breath, I also try not to take myself too seriously. Which is why you’ll find me challenging Jackie Chan to a fight, doing my best Jerry Seinfeld impersonation or transforming into a video game character. And most recently, it’s why you’ll find me trying (some say
desperately) to get the attention of Ryan Reynolds and convince him to be a YVR spokesperson. If you haven’t seen Finding Ryan yet, please do give it a watch. You can find it on our social channels or head to youryvr.ca. In case I haven’t made it outrageously clear in the video, the message we are trying to get across here is that YVR is a community-based, not-for-profit organization. But why is it important for you to know that? Well, when we go out and survey, less than
two out of 10 people can describe our operating model with any accuracy. And we believe that this unique operating model is an absolutely crucial component to the success of the region, province and even the country of Canada. If we were a private, forprofit organization, things would be vastly different, we believe much worse, for the economy and our community. I feel so strongly about this, that when my marketing and communications team tell me that if I do something a little silly
it will help get the word out, I happily put my ego aside and ham it up for the camera. Do I get a little red in the face when I watch this stuff back? Sure. And do I get texts from my friends asking me what the heck I was thinking? I do. But I trust my team and I trust the public to understand it is all in good fun and it is all for an extremely important cause: connecting with our community. The premise might be a bit silly and the tone is downright absurd—but the message is dead
serious. YVR is your airport. It exists to provide social and economic benefit for our community. At the end of the video, I say I will do whatever it takes to find Ryan Reynolds and I haven’t given up, but I will truly go to whatever lengths necessary to make sure we are delivering for our community. I must admit, though, I’m starting to wish the video series was called Finding Seth—his calendar certainly seemed a lot more open when TransLink came calling!

YVR’s unsung heroes leave a lasting impression YVR Stars is the official program to celebrate the airport’s employees and volunteers who provide exceptional customer care experiences. Passengers from around the world and employees on Sea Island nominate YVR’s team members for YVR Stars when they are recognized as having gone the extra mile. Over the years, countless YVR Star nominations have been received from passengers and customers who have had memorable experiences to share. There are, however, instances where the person who has experienced exceptional customer care may not know or mention the YVR Star’s name in their nomination. These nameless nominees, who go above and beyond every day, are the airport’s unsung heroes. Some of these stories include: • A security guard who provided a lost passenger with directions • A screening officer who helped a passenger who had become ill in the Customs Hall • A Green Coat volunteer who guided passengers through the airport • An airline staff member who was welcoming and personable to international passengers
Whether you need directions within the airport or travel tips around Vancouver, YVR’s Green Coat volunteers in their signature green vests are always ready with a smile and a helping hand.
The names of these and other nominees may not be known, but their service and exceptional customer care is appreciated by those who experienced the helping hands that were offered. The past year at YVR has been full of standout moments—from being named the Best Airport in North America for the 9th consecutive year to celebrating a 25-mllionpassenger milestone. While these big moments highlight
YVR overall, it is also recognized that individual members of the YVR community, who go above and beyond each day, contribute to making these successes possible. If you ever see or experience any YVR employees or volunteers going the extra mile, please nominate them for a YVR Star and share your story at @yvrairport, using the hashtag #YVRStars or send an email to yvrstars@yvr.ca.

During the consultation process of its 20-year Master Plan (YVR 2037), YVR received feedback from its planespotting community that included the suggestion that a new planespotting platform be considered. YVR’s Master Plan now includes the recommendation that a platform be built for the North Runway in the future.
While there are no immediate plans to build a new planespotting platform, a survey is being circulated by YVR to identify the preferences of the YVR planespotting community, the details of which will be considered in the airport’s future planning efforts. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey at yvr.ca/ planespotters.
New Canadian Air Passenger Protection Regulations
In May 2018, the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) began developing Air Passenger Protection Regulations to establish airline obligations towards passengers, including minimum compensation levels and standards of treatment in different circumstances. The CTA consulted broadly for three months with the travelling public, consumer rights groups and the airline industry through a variety of channels, including public sessions across the country, online questionnaires, surveys of passengers in airports, face-to-face meetings with key experts and stakeholders and written submissions and comments. As a result of these consultations, air travellers now have new rights and regulations under the CTA’s Air Passenger Protection Regulations. The new regulations require airlines to meet certain obligations towards passengers, such as: • communicating to passengers in a simple, clear way, information on their rights and recourses and providing regular updates in the event of flight delays and cancellations • providing compensation of up to $2,400 for bumping a
passenger for reasons within the airlines’ control • ensuring passengers receive prescribed standards of treatment during all tarmac delays and allowing them to leave the airplane, when it’s safe to do so, if a tarmac delay lasts for more than three hours and there is no prospect of an imminent take-off • providing compensation for lost or damaged baggage of up to $2,100 and a refund of any baggage fees • setting clear policies for transporting musical instruments Additionally, starting on December 15, 2019, airlines will also have obligations towards passengers during flight disruptions and when seating children. Airlines will be required to follow the obligations set out in the regulations and could be subject to administrative monetary penalties of up to $25,000 per incident for non-compliance. In the event of an air travelrelated dispute that cannot be resolved directly by a passenger and an airline, the passenger can make a complaint to the CTA. Icelandair’s special livery aircraft celebrates latest addition to UNESCO World Heritage List Iceland set a milestone last month as Vatnajökull National Park became the third site in this Nordic nation to join the UNESCO World Heritage List. Along with Þingvellir National Park and the volcanic island of Surtsey, this latest addition now accounts for more than 14 per cent of Iceland’s territory being a part of the World Heritage List. Vatnajökull National Park is 14,701 square kilometers of unique landscapes featuring breathtaking natural phenomena. The vastness of the biggest ice cap in Iceland—Vatnajökull glacier—dominates the national park and offers unparalleled panoramas of glacier tongues, glacial lagoons and icy peaks. When the volcanoes hiding under the ice wake up, it offers a show of its own. Shaped by the mighty forces
of Iceland’s environment, the area offers opportunities to explore the greatness of the Icelandic highlands, plus some of the newest lava formations, monumental mountains, thundering waterfalls and iconic canyons. Stretching from the southeastern shores, the national park reaches all the way to the north of the country. Locals and tourists have been attracted to this natural reserve throughout the years and it’s no coincidence that national carrier Icelandair has paid tribute to the glacier’s beauty and grandeur by outfitting one of its aircraft in special Vatnajökull glacier livery. Using the technique of airbrushing, it took 24 days for a team of 25 to spray paint by hand the image of the glacier, the results of which are truly something to behold.

British Airways predicts ultra-convenience, immersive tech and ‘air cruises’ According to a major global travel report published by British Airways, hyper-personalization, immersive virtual realities, 3D printed health solutions, modular aircraft connected to city infrastructure, hypersonic flying and the rise of super-slow “flight cruises” are all part of the future of air travel. The BA 2119: Flight of the Future Report was commissioned by the airline to mark its centenary year. Surveying 13,000 consumers across 10 countries and with consultations from leading sector experts and futurologists, the report is one of the largest global consumer travel studies of its kind and offers a picture of what flying will look like in 20, 40, 60 and even 100 years into the future. Key findings and possible outcomes include: • Far greater personalization flying experiences for consumers, which could be delivered through aircraft seats that use biological scanners to gather travellers’ physiological and nutritional needs. This data will suggest food and drink to meet individual requirements, which can
be 3D-printed on board the aircraft. • Acclimatization to the destination, be that combating jet lag or pre-travel care, will be a thing of the past, with 3D printers also used to print personalized health supplements. • Artificial intelligence-powered personalization will enable passengers to bring cloud-based work and entertainment profiles to their seats, while holographic flight attendants will field basic questions and requests, freeing up cabin crew to offer more value-added interactions. • Consumer demand for ultraconvenience and personal autonomy also emerged as key trends of the study, with passengers especially keen on speeding up their whole travel experience while still on board the plane. For example, inflight technology that allows travellers to self-complete immigration and visa control while they are still in the air. • The environment is a key consideration for travellers,

with 43 per cent of people prepared to pay more if the flight was more environmentally friendly. Star Alliance has signed a partnership agreement with NEC Corporation to develop biometric data-based identification platform to improve the travel experience for frequent flyer programme customers of its member airlines. Once implemented, Star Alliance customers who opt in to biometrics will be able to pass through curb-to-gate touchpoints within airports—check-in kiosks, bag-drop, lounges, and boarding gates, which traditionally require both a passport and boarding pass—by using a secure identity management solution that uses facial recognition technology. The service will be available to customers who are enrolled in one of the Star Alliance frequent flyer programmes and who have authorized the use of their biometric data. With a few easy steps on their mobile device, customers will have the option to securely enrol in the new platform. They only need to enrol once and can then

use their biometrics data multiple times at biometric touchpoints of any participating airport whenever they travel with a Star Alliance member airline. Personal data, such as photo and other identification details, are encrypted and stored within the platform. Star Alliance says that the system has been designed in compliance with applicable data protection laws making use of the latest facial recognition technology. Personal data will only be processed with the consent of the passenger. Passengers may be required to show their passport during security and immigration procedures. Star Alliance and NEC aim to introduce the first biometric solution at a Star Alliance airport hub by the first quarter of 2020. Star Alliance airline members that fly from YVR are Air Canada, Air China, Air New Zealand, ANA, EVA Air, Lufthansa and United.
covering more than 43,000 kilometres and visiting 30 countries in about four months. The route will initially take them to Iceland, and from there to Canada and the USA. A total of approximately 100 flight segments will be needed to complete the mission from start to finish. During their journey
through different time zones, Brooks and Jones will wear a special timepiece that makes it possible to set the time to a different time zone by simply turning the watch’s bezel to the desired location. Day-to-day flying activities on The Longest Flight can be followed at iwc.com and the silverspitfire.com.
On the heels of being named Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion for the fourth consecutive year, Delta will soon be rolling out a uniform language bar option for more than 300 sign languages around the world. Delta is the first U.S. airline
to offer this option, which will allow customers and qualified employees to recognize when they hold sign language as a common connection. Customers can expect to see uniformed employees sporting the new language bars later this fall.

Red Arrows depart for their biggest-ever tour of North America.
A huge tour of North America by the Red Arrows— aimed at promoting the United Kingdom—has begun. Fighter jets from the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team took off from their base at RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire, UK earlier this month, to begin a 4,922-kilometre journey across the North Atlantic. This is the largest North American tour to date for the famed Red Arrows, which will
include performances or flypasts at more than 20 locations across Canada and the United States. Stretching coast to coast, audiences across North America will have the unique opportunity to see the Red Arrows take flight during the team’s 11-week deployment, which is aimed at showcasing the UK at its best and supporting trade, business and defence interests. The last time the Red Arrows visited Canada and the United States was in 2008. With stops across North America, the 2019 tour will comprise a combination of nearly 20 aerobatic displays, several iconic flypasts and 100 separate ground engagement activities—from business receptions led by the UK’s Department for International Trade to sessions aimed at inspiring young people. Planning for the North American tour has spanned more than a year, and technical equipment and other resources have already been shipped to key
“hub” locations in Canada and the US in advance of the jets setting off from RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire. The team’s Hawk jets, which cannot refuel in the air and do not have the range to make the transatlantic crossing in one sortie, will be flown via several stops, including Scotland, Iceland and Greenland, to reach Halifax—the first major location of the tour. Planned dates for visits to Vancouver and Victoria are as follows: • Vancouver—September 24, 25, 26 (flypast) and 27 • Victoria—September 26 (flypast) For more information on the Red Arrows tour, follow @rafredarrows on Twitter, like the team’s Facebook page at RAF Red Arrows, view pictures on Instagram @rafredarrows or visit raf.mod.uk/reds Use #redarrowstour online to keep up to date with the Red Arrows’ tour of North America.
The Red Arrows will visit more than 25 cities across North America, with a combination of displays, flypasts and ground events helping to support a range of UK interests across business, trade, defence, education and other sectors.
An RAF Atlas A400M transporter aircraft carrying personnel and equipment will accompany the Red Arrows on the tour.

YVR Chapel update Life at the YVR Chapel continues to thrive, thanks to the many travellers and Sea Island employees who visit for respite throughout the day. The Chapel’s team of 50-plus volunteers are always pleased to welcome all visitors for a chat or quiet moment at this interfaith organization, which is conveniently located across from Tim Hortons in the International Terminal, Arrivals Level 2. Many of the Chapel’s volun-
teers are long-time supporters, such as Simon and Luce Klaver, who were honoured at last month’s annual summer BBQ for their 23 years of service in countless ways to the Chapel and the YVR community. Plans for the Chapel include a new space in the D Pier by 2021. In the meantime, new board members, associate chaplains and volunteers are being added to the Chapel team to serve the continued growth at YVR and on Sea Island.
Chaplain Dennis Kirkley (left), Anne Kirkley and retiring Chapel volunteers Simon and Luce Klaver, both of whom have been pillars of the YVR Chapel for decades.
More than 50 volunteers and members of the Chapel leadership team attended the Chapel’s summer barbeque, held last month.

cabins on Tasman and Pacific Island services under five hours in duration, as well as from its Works Deluxe offering on these flights. The initiative will divert more than 460,000 bottles that are sent annually to landfill and save more than 300 tonnes of carbon emissions by reducing weight on the aircraft. The airline also plans to roll out coffee cups made from plants rather than plastic across its domestic and international networks from October, while plastic water cups will be transitioned to recyclable alternatives next month. The airline’s previous commitment had targeted coffee and water cups on its domestic network, where most cups are used, but the scope has now been expanded to introduce the lower impact cups across the international network. This will lift the total number of cups being replaced this year from 14.7 million to 44.5 million. Individual plastic sauce packets are also being removed from Business Premier cabins on mainland North America and Hong Kong services, and the airline plan to eliminate them entirely from its global network by the end of October. Customers will instead be served sauce in reusable dishes, which is expected to prevent around 200,000 plastic packets going to landfill each year. Air New Zealand has already substituted or removed 7.1-million plastic stirrers, 3,000 plastic straws and 260,000 toothbrushes and eye mask wrappers from flights.

Making massive ‘rides’ to combat cancer Harbour Air is not only a sponsor of this year’s Ride to Conquer Cancer, but will be actively participating through once again fielding a team of riders in the event. Last year, Harbour Air’s team of 24-riders helped raise more than $80,000 and not content with that number, the organization is upping its goal this year to $500,000. Funds raised will be used to launch a three-year program called LOGIC (Liquid Biopsies of Gastrointestinal Cancers). Biopsies are a standard diagnostic tool for most types of cancers, but can be invasive, are expensive to the medical system and cause considerable discomfort for patients. Harbour Air plans to fund a project to study the efficacy of simply using blood samples to detect cancer in patients. Some other ways in which Harbour Air will be fundraising for this goal: • 100% of its Share the Fare program, which donates $1 on behalf of every passenger, every Friday, will be donated to the Ride to Conquer Cancer. • Entering a team of more than 25 to ride and fundraise all summer long
• Hosting community and staff fundraisers to raise support, awareness and as many dollars as possible A few ways in which Harbour Air is encouraging the public to be part of this initiative: • Donating to Harbour Air’s Team: conquercancer.ca/goto/HarbourAir2019 100% of every dollar donated goes directly to the program and tax receipts will be provided. • Taking part in Harbour Air’s community fundraisers—weekly BBQs at its terminals, riding kit auctions, Friday Sunset Sessions and opportunities for special deals on souvenirs. Follow Harbour Air on social media to find out more about upcoming fundraising events and take part where you can. • Fly on Fridays! Leading up to the ride on August 24-25th, 100 per cent of the funds raised through the airline’s Share the Fare Friday’s program will be going towards the team’s goal. Brenda Baptiste, board chair, Indigenous Tourism BC and regional chief Terry Teegee agree to support expansion of B.C.’s Indigenous tourism industry.
Indigenous Tourism BC (ITBC) and the British Columbia Assembly of First Nations (BCAFN) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to expand B.C.’s rich collection of Indigenous tourism products and experiences. By signing the MOU, both parties agree to collaborate with each other—as well as with tourism, business, educational and government organizations—to support growth of Indigenous tourism province-wide. “We are thrilled to collaborate with ITBC with the mutual goal of supporting the expansion of B.C.’s Indigenous tourism industry,” said regional chief Terry Teegee. “Our next steps are to connect with Indigenous business owners, operators and community members, and identify strategies to inspire growth in this
important economic sector.” Both organizations pledge to ensure business owners and operators are equipped with the necessary skills and resources to meet increased demand for authentic cultural experiences. They will also develop guiding principles and initiatives that contribute to the economic prosperity of Indigenous people while supporting the provincial economy. “Tourism is one of the fastest growing industries in B.C. and a key economic driver,” said Brenda Baptiste, board chair, Indigenous Tourism BC. “Similar expansion of Indigenous tourism relies on stakeholder collaborations, such as our new partnership with BCAFN. We look forward to working closely with BCAFN to promote economic development in Indigenous communities across the province.”

Flagship for future technology: MINI Electric readies for take-off
MINI Cooper SE tows a Boeing 777F freight aircraft to demonstrate its ‘muscle’ prowess.
A recent testing programme for the first purely electrically powered MINI was unconventional: on a foray to Frankfurt airport, a close-to-series prototype of the new model demonstrated just what electromobility in the style of MINI is capable of setting in motion. The MINI Cooper SE slipped straight into the role of an aircraft tug, setting off to the loading point, towing a Boeing 777F freight aircraft with an unladen weight of some 150,000 kilograms. Created collaboratively by the BMW Group and Lufthansa Cargo, a 45-second commercial filmed of the event shows the MINI Cooper SE as a ‘muscle
car’ pulling the significantly larger and heavier transport aircraft across the airfield. The MINI Cooper SE will go into serial production at the British plant in Oxford as of November 2019. It is based on the MINI 3-door and combines locally emissions-free driving with the brand’s characteristic go-kart feeling, premium quality and expressive design. As such, the MINI Electric offers a new type of sustainable mobility defined by driving fun and individuality. After the BMW i3, the MINI Cooper SE is the second purely electrically powered model within the company’s premium automobile portfolio.

Range Rover air suspension repair Among the many luxuries of the Range Rover is its air suspension system, which makes it possible for the vehicle to navigate a variety of different terrains. Air suspension uses pressurized air and is useful for allowing the Range Rover to ride low safely at high speeds and with the push of a button gain a few centimetres of ground clearance on rough roads. Air suspension adds complexity to a vehicle and with that complexity comes the potential for added repairs. The Range Rover air suspension system consists of several major components. Air bags sit in the four corners of the vehicle and can be inflated or deflated to adjust the vehicle’s body height from the wheelbase. Height sensors also sit in each corner of the vehicle and detect its distance from the ground. The air compressor and storage tank store and filter air and the valve block routes air to different corners of the car. Lastly, the Range Rover’s electronic control unit regulates
the system’s settings and allows the driver to adjust the vehicle’s height. Many of these parts are expensive to replace and if any of these components fail, the entire air suspension system is inoperable. Recently, our automotive shop came across a refreshingly inexpensive air suspension repair on a 2006 Range Rover HSE. An air suspension failure warning appeared on the dash and the system became inoperative: stuck in the high-ground clearance position. With scan tool attached, we found a trouble code indicating a blockage in the air suspension exhaust system. Further diagnosis found the cause of concern: a plugged air compressor muffler. With the muffler plugged, the system could not vent the air from the springs and lower the vehicle. The muffler’s function is to quiet the air flowing in and out of the compressor and over time this one had plugged. After replacing the muffler along with an updated dryer assembly to pre-

vent future failures, the system functioned normally. Diagnosing the Range Rover is a real treat when compared to many of the older-generation air suspension systems. The Range Rover features a comprehensive series of trouble codes to help pin-point areas of concern, along with excellent scan tool data readings of all components. This contrasts with systems found 10 to 20 years ago on Subaru, Lincoln and Cadillac models, which had no scan tool data and perhaps a few basic trouble codes. So, is air suspension
worthwhile? The answer: it costs more to repair, but is unbeatable for giving a vehicle the versatility of a level ride under all load conditions. Air suspension gives a vehicle like the Range Rover the best of both worlds—a comfortable city/highway cruising ride and high-clearance, off-road ability.
