YVR’s plans for the future include expanded terminals, new taxiways, a geoexchange system and upgraded roads and bridges to Sea Island.

For the 14th year in a row, financial ratings agency Standard & Poor’s has confirmed an AA long-term issuer credit and senior unsecured debt rating for Vancouver Airport Authority. The AA rating re-affirms the position of Vancouver International Airport (YVR) as one of the world’s most financially stable airports, an achievement that stems from YVR’s focus on sustainable growth.

“YVR’s strong financial health is testament to the success of Canada’s unique airport governance model,” said Diana Vuong, vice president finance and chief financial officer, Vancouver Airport Authority. “As a communitybased, not-for-profit organization, YVR reinvests its financial success back into the airport and the region, driving growth while constantly improving the airport for everyone.”

YVR’s financial strength is based on a diversified revenue model that focuses on providing unique business solutions while keeping costs low. Almost half of YVR’s revenue comes from non-aeronautical sources, including YVR’s award-winning BorderXpress kiosks, Duty Free sales, concessions, land and terminal rents, parking and more. As a world-class hub, YVR plays

a significant role in driving economic benefits across British Columbia— facilitating $16.5 billion in total economic output, $8.4 billion in total GDP and $1.4 billion in total government revenue. YVR’s operations generate more than 24,000 jobs at the airport and, together with tourism and cargo, the airport supports more than 100,000 jobs across B.C.

Ongoing projects at YVR: September update There are several key pro jects currently taking place at YVR that will enhance the airport experience. This includes the airport’s biggest sustainability projects to date, new parking options, terminal expansions and much more. These projects are all possible due to YVR’s unique operating structure—a communitybased organization that reinvests its profits into the airport and region. The multi-year expansion projects currently underway at YVR will help meet growing passenger demand and better connect British Columbians and local businesses to the world, while improving the airport experience for everyone. Terminal • Construction is underway in Air Canada’s Domestic Terminal check-in area for the installation of new selfservice bag drops. Hoarding has been added around the work area and is expected to be complete in December. • There may be intermittent noise at the Transborder

area during daytime hours. This work is being done to improve YVR processes for transfer passengers. • Construction continues near Transborder check-in to make several enhancements to the area. Work includes replacing the check-in kiosks with the newest models, moving a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) unit, relocating the information counter, and some other minor updates. • Construction for a new entrance to gate E85 is underway. Once complete in March 2020, it will connect passengers from Level 3 to the Level 2 remote stand operations (RSO) facility. This work includes the addition of new elevators and escalators. • As construction continues on several of YVR’s new food and beverage and retail options, passengers can expect to see various hoarding around the terminal. • As part of the International Pier D expansion project, various work is taking

place. While work is taking place airside, it may include noisy work. Given that there are 24-hour operations in this part of the terminal, YVR understands that this could potentially be disruptive for those with flights at nearby gates. Travellers looking for somewhere quiet can find seating in the creek area, near the food court. • New exit doors are being installed in the Domestic Terminal post-security, near

A-B gates. Hoarding will be in place and work is anticipated to be complete by December. In and Around Sea Island • Construction continues on YVR’s new Parkade and Central Utilities Building. This includes work around the old Value Lot off of Grant McConachie Way, as well as within the existing Parkade. There are various traffic control measures in place for cars arriving and departing from

the terminal near this site. Please follow all road signage and flaggers in the area. • In the existing Parkade, customers will notice fencing, temporary pedestrian walkways and some stalls blocked. This work is for several upgrade projects including building new entry ramps, as well as the installation of an automated parking guidance system. • As part of utilities work to connect a new geoexchange system to the terminal, there are nightly lane closures directly outside the old Value Lot on Grant McConachie Way. This work will be ongoing until December and will take place between 9:30pm and 7am. One lane will be maintained throughout for inbound traffic. • There are also several related projects near the site including: • A new crosswalk, which will be opening outside of International Arrivals on Level 2 this month. Pedestrians are asked to follow all directional signage in the area. The existing crosswalk will be temporarily closed until the end of the year. • Work is taking place outside International Arrivals in Chester Johnson Park. In order to facilitate the work, a section of the park is closed. • A period of significant excavation from the project site continues. In line with YVR’s commitment to sustainability and construction waste diversion, the valuable earthworks materials will be transported to an unused parcel of land south of the BCIT campus on Russ Baker Way. While there are no current plans to develop this site, this is an opportunity to re-use

Construction

and recycle valuable materials to prepare the land for potential future development. • As part of work to install new EV charging stations in the Templeton employee parking lot, the west-bound lane of Templeton Station Road near Templeton Street will be partially closed from early to mid-September. One lane will remain open. Please follow all signage and direction from work crews in the area. • YVR is planning to redevelop close to 18 hectares of land on airport property in the Templeton area, adjacent to the Burkeville residential neighbourhood. The redevelopment will include a cargo and logistics facility and a linear greenspace for community use. Site preparation work is now underway to prepare the project site for redevelopment. • As part of this work, crews are demolishing and removing the decommissioned Templeton building. The demolition and associated clean-up are expected to be complete by mid October 2019. • Little Wings Daycare is relocating from their existing site to the south west corner of Miller Road and Templeton, adjacent to Sea Island Elementary and Park and Fly. This move is necessary due to their current lease ending. To prepare the area for this relocation, work includes preparation of a ditch crossing, as well as earthworks on the project site and installation of site services and utilities. Parking • A section of McDonald Road is closed for construction traffic only. This work is part of the project to extend the east apron for Remote Stand Operations. Please follow all directional signage to the new McDonald Road, located east of North Service Place. For more information, please visit yvr.ca/construction.

Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority, 2019 BC CEO Award, Not for Profit Category.

Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority, has been recognized by Business in Vancouver as a CEO of the year for the annual BC CEO Awards. Richmond is the recipient for

CEO of the year in the not-forprofit category and is one of six winners for the 2019 awards. As president and CEO of Vancouver Airport Authority, Richmond has been successful in maintaining Vancouver

International Airport (YVR) as a top performing airport and has been instrumental in its growth as a world-class sustainable hub. His visionary leadership continues to focus on one of the airport’s most significant strategic

master plans to date. The result? YVR welcomed 25-million passengers two years ahead of forecast and was named Best Airport in North America by Skytrax for 10 consecutive years. And in 2020, YVR will open Pier D, a new International Terminal. Beyond this, Richmond champions diversity and accessibility across the organization. He is the Chair of the President’s Group, a voluntary team that encourages businesses in B.C. to employ persons with disabilities.

He has worked with his team to develop specific hiring targets for underrepresented groups— women, aboriginal people, persons with disabilities and visible minorities. In 2018, YVR received the Accessibility Certified Gold rating under the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification program, the first airport in North America to receive the rating and the highest-rated building in the program.

Utilizing technology to handle record growth Every year, YVR welcomes more and more people through its terminals. In 2018, the airport served 25.9-million passengers—hitting its goal of 25-million passengers two full years ahead of schedule. With facilities at capacity, there is an extensive capital construction program currently underway at YVR to help meet demand. In addition to new construction facilities, Vancouver Airport Authority recognizes that innovative technologies are needed to handle the record-breaking growth, while maintaining the high-level standards set for customer experience. YVR’s unique operating model as a not-for-profit, financially independent organization drives its team to invest in innovations that improve the airport experience, while also keeping costs as low as possible. One way this growth has been managed effectively is through BorderXpress—an end-to-end border control solution. This has allowed YVR to increase international arrivals by 210 per cent since the opening of the customs hall in 1996—all without having to expand immigration facilities or add staffing resources. YVR’s in-house innovation team, Innovative Travel Solutions (ITS), launched BorderXpress, a first-of-its-kind border control solution, more than 10 years ago to expedite the process for arriv-

ing passengers. The team saw incredible success with this technology, reducing passenger wait times by more than 60 per cent. Through automating administrative functions, they were able to increase efficiencies, minimize interventions and deliver outstanding passenger experiences, all without compromising security. The team at ITS worked closely with Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) to adapt and advance the solution over the years. For example, in 2017, BorderXpress was expanded to meet new requirements to modernize the Canadian border by accepting digital declarations from all arriving international passengers. Since this allows all travellers to use an efficient self-service option, it has provided YVR with the flexibility to grow at an unprecedented rate without having to expand or hire more staff. Additionally, the success of the BorderXpress system goes beyond YVR—ITS is a trusted partner for more than 43 airport, seaport and onboard sites, having helped more than 250-million passengers worldwide to clear borders safely and securely. For more information about Innovative Travel Solutions, visit innovativetravelsolutions. ca.

Designed with versatility, safety and security in mind, BorderXpress self-service kiosks at YVR reduce passenger wait times by more than 60 per cent.

Nicola Berardi (left) receives a YVR Star certificate from Craig Richmond, president and CEO Vancouver Airport Authority, in recognition of outstanding customer care.

Security screening can be a stressful part of the travel experience for passengers—especially during busy times—but, thankfully, when there is top staff on the job, unforeseen circumstances will result in customer service that produces supportive and positive results. Two passengers experienced this type of excellent service at YVR on a recent summer day, while travelling domestically. At passenger screening, a bride-to-be was travelling with her mother, who was stopped briefly during screening as she had accidentally brought cream in her carry-on bag. While screening officers helped sort out the situation, another passenger mistakenly took the future bride’s carry-on bag, which contained her wedding dress. The bride-to-be was understandably upset, believing the likelihood of seeing her dress again to be very slim. That’s when Nicola Berardi, operations manager at G4S security services company, sprang into action.

Berardi calmly and cheerfully handled both situations by walking back and forth between the passenger and her mother, assuring them that he would locate the missing carry-on bag and fit as much cream in a plastic bag as he could. He retrieved the camera footage that showed which passenger had accidently taken the bag and managed to retrieve the bag with its precious contents before it left YVR. Because of Berardi’s quick and calm actions, all three passengers avoided a difficult situation and went on to enjoy their journey. Berardi went above and beyond and received welldeserved recognition as this month’s YVR Star. If you ever see any employees or volunteers on Sea Island going the extra mile and providing exceptional customer care, please nominate them for a YVR Star and share your experience. Sunwing’s winter schedule finalized without Boeing 737 MAX 8

Sunwing’s fleet comprises more than 40 Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which the airline will operate solely for the upcoming winter season.

Sunwing has announced that it will operate its coming winter schedule without the use of Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. The airline’s winter schedule comes into effect on November 5, 2019 and runs until mid-May 2020. The ongoing worldwide grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft created operational difficulties for Sunwing during the summer months, caus-

ing the airline to make schedule changes or cancellations to more than 3,000 flights. The airline’s revised winter schedule will now be operated entirely on Boeing 737-800 aircraft. However, should the Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft become available during the winter season, Sunwing will evaluate opportunities to add capacity or reintegrate them into the fleet. All schedule changes

required to accommodate the change in aircraft type have already been made and are now live on the company’s website and reservation system, through to mid-May 2020. Any customers who have been affected by these changes have been notified either directly or through their travel agent, depending on how their reservation was confirmed.

Cargojet signs agreement to grow partnership with Amazon Ontario-based Cargojet has entered into a new strategic agreement with e-commerce giant Amazon that could include acquiring a stake in Cargojet. While Amazon already utilizes Cargojet’s overnight air network and charter aircraft services to move packages from its facilities to distribution centres before final delivery, the new agreement is designed to encourage it to use even more of Cargojet’s services. Under the agreement, Cargojet will issue warrants to Amazon for variable voting shares that will vest based on milestones of business that it receives from Amazon. The first tranche will allow Amazon to buy up to 9.9 per cent of Cargojet’s variable voting shares at an exercise price

of $91.78 per share. They will vest over a period of six-and-ahalf years, with vesting tied to the delivery by Amazon of up to $400 million in business to Cargojet. Amazon will also receive additional warrants to acquire up to an additional five per cent of Cargojet’s variable voting shares, with vesting tied to the delivery by Amazon of up to an additional $200 million in business volumes after the first tranche of warrants is fully vested. “The commercial relationship the Cargojet team continues to build with Amazon has now allowed us to further strengthen and align our long-term strategic commercial interests,” said chief executive officer Ajay Virmani. “Our continuous commitment

to provide value-added services enables us to earn all of our customers’ trust as the leading overnight air-network operator.” Cargojet plans, over time, to add more non-stop flights allowing later departures and earlier arrivals to the 15 major cities that it already serves, and to add new cities on its overnight network. These service and frequency enhancements will be available to all Cargojet customers and will expand Cargojet’s reach to approximately 95 per cent of the Canadian population. The new agreement between Cargojet and Amazon comes as Amazon continues to expand its own air and ground delivery fleet to control how its goods are delivered to customers and rely less on outside carriers.

Cargojet Boeing 757-200ER—the airline’s all-Boeing freighter fleet also includes 767-200ER and 767300ER aircraft.

Air Canada challenges Onex takeover of WestJet

Greatest demand for commercial airline personnel in Asia Pacific region

Air Canada headquarters at Montréal–Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport.

Air Canada has filed a challenge with the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) over private equity firm Onex Corporation’s proposed takeover of WestJet Airlines. Onex announced in May 2019 that it would be buying WestJet for $5 billion, including debt, and taking the airline private. WestJet shareholders overwhelmingly supported the buyout in July, with 92.5 per cent voting in favour. Last month, WestJet announced that the Canadian Competition Bureau had granted unconditional approval for WestJet’s proposed transaction with Onex, an important step to closing the

transaction, which is still subject to remaining regulatory approvals. Air Canada’s submission to the CTA argues the transaction could flout Canada’s foreign ownership rules. “The uncertainty and flexibility of co-investor participation introduces significant risk that non-Canadian co-investors will

have control-in-fact of WestJet following the transaction,” wrote Air Canada in its submitted challenge to the takeover. Under the CTA’s foreign ownership ruling, a Canadian airline is restricted to 49 per cent and a single international investor or carrier is unable to control more than 25 per cent of voting interests.

WestJet, which began operations as a low-cost airline alternative in 1996, now provides scheduled and charter air service to more than 100 destinations in Canada, the United States, Europe, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

The Asia Pacific region continues to drive global demand for commercial pilots, technicians and cabin crew, according to a report by global aerospace manufacturer Boeing. The 2019 Boeing Pilot & Technician Outlook is an industry forecast of new aviation personnel demand. It is closely tied to projections for new airplane deliveries around the globe, including annual aircraft utilization rates, crewing requirements by region and regulatory requirements. Over the next 20 years, airlines around the world will need 44,000 new airplanes, with more than 17,000, or 39 per cent, of those airplanes delivered to the Asia Pacific region. The forecast projects that the Asia Pacific region will need 244,000 new commercial pilots, or 38 per cent, of the pilots needed around the globe.

This demand, stemming from a mix of anticipated fleet growth, retirements and attrition, will be most significant in China; the country is expected to need 124,000 pilots, which is more than half of those needed in the region. Southeast Asia and South Asia follow, with 20 per cent and 17 per cent of the demand, respectively. The Asia Pacific region is also expected to lead global demand for maintenance technicians (249,000, or 39 per cent of global demand) and cabin crew (323,000, or 37 per cent of global demand), with China leading demand for both (124,000 maintenance technicians and 150,000 cabin crew). For more information about the 2019 Pilot & Technician Outlook, please visit: boeing.com/commercial/market.

WestJet Link will begin operating nonstop flights between Vancouver and Cranbrook, B.C., on October 27, 2019. “This new route linking interior British Columbia with our Vancouver hub provides convenient travel options between the two areas, and gives our guests in Cranbrook access to a second WestJet hub with connections across our entire network,” said Brian Znotins, WestJet vicepresident network planning and alliances. “WestJet is now providing the City of Cranbrook with the most flights and options to travel easily across the country and beyond.” All WestJet Link flights are operated through a capacity purchase agreement with Pacific Coastal, using the latter’s fleet of 34-seat Saab 340B aircraft.

Each aircraft includes six seats available in WestJet Premium, offering guests advanced boarding, no-charge for two checked bags and seating at the front of the aircraft. “We are delighted to welcome WestJet Link’s daily service from Vancouver to Cranbrook,” said Anne Murray, vice president, airline business development and public affairs, Vancouver Airport Authority. “As Canada’s second busiest airport, Vancouver International Airport proudly links passengers to cities in British Columbia, North America and around the world. WestJet Link’s route to Cranbrook connects customers to a great B.C. destination and drives economic benefits for our region.”

‘weird’ about being so passionate about planes and flying. That all changed when he joined the Cadet Program. “I didn’t feel weird in cadets,” said Lourens. “I joined for the flying, but the best part is the friends I have made along the way. It feels cool to have found them and I have made some great buddies.” Lourens has just graduated from Salmon Arm Secondary School and hopes to pursue a lifelong career in aviation.

Air Canada is celebrating the 35th anniversary of its travel loyalty program Aeroplan with its biggest contest yet—the opportunity for 45 lucky members to win a total of 38.5-million miles. From now until September 25, 2019, Aeroplan is offering members two ways to win. Ten lucky Aeroplan members will have the chance to win 3.5-million miles and make their dream bucket list trip a reality. In addition, 35 members will be able to win 100,000 miles. Aeroplan members can register to enter the contest by going to aeroplan.com/35 and submitting their Aeroplan number. Grand Prize Draws: There will be 10 grand prize draws of 3.5-million miles. After a member registers, every transaction with an Aeroplan partner counts as an automatic entry for the grand prize. Each time the registered member earns miles with any of Aeroplan’s 75+ partners, redeems miles for a flight, hotel stay, car rental, merchandise, activities or donates miles via Aeroplan’s Member Donation Program, they will be entered for one of these 10 grand prizes. Aeroplan-affiliated cardholders get 35 bonus entries if they

make at least one transaction with their card during the contest period. Share on Social: Share your picture-perfect trips, tag the people you would go with and hashtag #withaeroplan for a chance to win a secondary prize. Participants can post every day for more chances to win one of 35 secondary prizes of 100,000 miles. Air Canada recently announced changes to Aeroplan ahead of the plans relaunch in 2020. To make Aeroplan more flexible and member-friendly, the changes include full refunds

Cadet Warrant Officer First Class (WO1) Nicholas Lourens, 17, from Salmon Arm, British Columbia, is having the summer of a lifetime. He’s learning to fly with Canadian Flight Centre at Boundary Bay Airport, just south of Vancouver, B.C., where he will earn his private pilot’s licence. Lourens is a cadet with 222 Shuswap Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron and is one of just 34 cadets in British Columbia to receive a scholarship from the Department of National Defence that covers his flying lessons, accommodation and travel. The Cadet Program develops confident, self-sufficient leaders who form lasting friendships and become engaged in their communities. The program also promotes physical fitness and healthy living and fosters an interest in the activities of the Canadian Armed Forces. “My dad took me to Salmon Arm Airport one day after daycare when I was four years old,” WO1 Lourens said. “I looked at a plane and I thought, ‘This is it!’ I’ve wanted to be a pilot since then. That is why I joined cadets, and now I’m achieving that dream thanks to this program.” Lourens, who dreams of flying the Griffon helicopter with the RCAF, always felt a little

As part of its biometric boarding programme at its largest hub in Dallas, Texas, American Airlines has launched biometric boarding for customers departing from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). American also implemented a biometric boarding program at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) earlier this year. American Airlines plans to expand biometric boarding to nearly 75 international gates throughout Terminals A, B, C and D by the end of this year. When a customer begins the boarding process, the facial recognition programme will scan an image of their face and send it to an existing cloudbased CBP database. The system then instantly matches the image against the passport photo already on file with CBP and if a ‘yes’ is sent back, the customer is cleared to board within seconds at the gate. According to American Airlines, no customer biometrics will ever be stored. Agents will still be able to

clear a customer for boarding using the regular clearance process, and will continue to ensure customers have their passports before departing. Customers with a U.S. passport may choose not to use the new system and board with their regular boarding pass.

The carrier will continue evaluating the program and its potential expansion to more locations and flights throughout its global network. American Airlines offers flights from YVR to Dallas and Los Angeles. For more information on flights, visit aa.com.

KLM’s CO2Zero program encourages travellers to buy carbon credits to reduce CO2 emissions.

Cascade Aerospace Hangar, 1337 Townline

In 2008, KLM was one of the few airlines with its own carbon footprint compensation service, CO2Zero. This program enables passengers to achieve CO2-neutral travel by providing compensation for emissions caused by their flights. This can be done when booking or via MyTrip on the KLM website before boarding a flight. The calculations of CO2 emissions are made based on the type of aircraft, the distance flown and the historical load factor of a specific flight. The verification of the emission data and the methodology for calculating carbon emissions are carried out by an independent auditor. A carbon credit is a form of permission to emit greenhouse gases, which are then reduced or removed from the atmosphere through an emissions-reducing project. Over the past 11 years,

around 200,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions have been compensated via KLM’s CO2Zero program. KLM only invests the compensation funding in projects that are certified within the Gold Standard of the Global Goals. These projects do not only reduce CO2 emissions, but also promote local sustainable development. Since October 2017, the airline has been investing the compensation funding in a reforestation project in Panama, called the CO2OL Tropical Mix. This project transforms former pastures into new forests consisting of a mix of tree species and a variety of ecosystems. The project combines the protection of biodiversity and the restoration of ecosystems with sustainable wood production (FSC-certified) and sustainable cocoa production (UTZ-certified). In addition to the environ-

mental benefits, the project also provides 150 jobs with a fixed income and good labour conditions, offering workers a basic education and training in sustainability and ecological alternatives. It also ensures that local workers can improve their standard of living and hone their skills and knowledge. During KLM World Deal Weeks—from August 29 to September 16, 2019—KLM will double any amount paid by passengers departing from The Netherlands, should they choose to compensate for their share in the CO2 emissions for their flight through the CO2ZERO program. Passengers and travel agents can use MY Trip to arrange CO2 compensation, even if the travel booking has already been made. For information on KLM flights from YVR, visit klm. com.

• The Arts • Active Living • Culture • Sustainability • City Centre • Nature One design will be chosen that represents each theme, with the 10 winners having their creative genius turned into approximately 100 street banners each. These will be installed throughout Richmond’s downtown core, on walking paths and on main gateways leading in and out of the city. A community volunteer judging panel will initially select up to 20 designs as semi-finalists, with the final judging taken to a public vote. All semi-finalist designs will be posted on the City of Richmond’s Facebook page and City’s webpage where the community will be invited to pick their favourite designs. Contest winners will receive

Artist Nancy Chew’s brush painting artistry adorns the piano at King George Park. Photo: courtesy City of Richmond.

Adamson reimagined the pianos at Britannia Shipyards and Richmond Nature Park with her distinctive “Jackson Pollack meets Van Gogh” style of painting. The story of the much-loved character Peter Rabbit, recreated by artists as young as five years old from Thompson Community Association’s Terra Nova Nature Camp, can be seen on the piano in the Community Gardens at Terra Nova Rural Park. Young Cambie Community Centre students of Chinese Brush Painting artist and instructor Nancy Chew creatively interpreted traditional Chinese imagery to beautify the piano at King George Park, and the Richmond Cultural Centre Plaza piano was artistically transformed by the Richmond Art Gallery Youth Collective. Community members of all ages and musical abilities are invited to enjoy and play these pianos from now through to the end of September. The Pianos on the Street Program is sponsored by the City of Richmond Public Art Program and Pacey’s Pianos, in partnership with local community groups and artists.

Will technology eliminate calls from backseat drivers? “Watch that truck!” “You’re trailing too close.” “Slow down, you’re driving too fast!” Ah, the incessant (helpful?) advice from a backseat driver. But perhaps the days of these common calls from backseat drivers are coming to an end, thanks to new driver-assist technologies. According to a recent study from Ford and sociologist Dr. Jess Carbino, 68 per cent of drivers believe that backseat driving behaviour will decrease because of driver-assist technology. Ford teamed with Dr. Carbino, best known for her work with Bumble—a locationbased social and dating application that facilitates communication between interested users—to Solution for September 2019 Crossword.

perform a study on how backseat driving affects drivers. No surprise to drivers, the study confirmed backseat drivers can cause more harm than good for the well-being of those inside the vehicle. “For a lot of drivers, constantly getting advice from passengers is more than just annoying, it’s stressful,” said Carbino. Car manufacturers, such as Ford, insist that available driver-assist technologies—such as Blind Spot Information System with cross-traffic alert and Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking—can help reduce the risk of collisions and build confidence in certain driving situations, while always allowing the driver to remain in

control. In fact, the study’s findings contradict a growing belief that technology inhibits human connection. Insights from the study show that while backseat driving can cause in-vehicle relationships to suffer, driver-assist technology can help avoid unnecessary backseat banter. Since the technology can help assist with some of the burdensome tasks of navigating, drivers and passengers can focus on more enjoyable aspects of the ride, namely each other. The data also suggests that since respondents have confidence in the technology, it can help eliminate the perceived need for their backseat driving input.
