The carbon reduction journey continues at YVR and for a second year its Level 3 Carbon Accreditation from Airports Council International has been successfully renewed—demonstrating the success of additional steps taken to reduce the airport’s climate impact. Launched in 2009, Airport Carbon Accreditation is an independent program that reviews and enforces the accreditation criteria for airports on an annual basis. As a leader in environmental sustainability, YVR is among 47 airports in North America (only 16 of which have reached Level 3) that were recently recognized in Tampa, Florida for this achievement. While YVR has been taking measures for many years to reduce its own carbon emissions— upgrading its fleet, improving airport infrastructure and reducing fossil fuel consumption—in order to achieve Level 3 accreditation, YVR also had to demonstrate its influence in reducing emissions in the surrounding community. To that end, Vancouver Airport Authority works closely with community business partners through

programs such as Project Green YVR, an initiative that helps Sea Island businesses reduce their waste, water and energy use and limit their impact on the environment. Additionally, to minimize vehicle, building and aircraft greenhouse gas emissions, YVR supports low-carbon travel options, including a $300-million investment in the Canada Line connection to YVR, as well as electric vehicle parking and cycling infrastructure. Currently, 284 airports actively engage in

Airport Carbon Accreditation in more than 68 countries worldwide. From July 2017 to June 2018, these airports collectively reduced CO2 emissions by more than 347,026 tonnes—the equivalent of growing more than eight-million seedlings for 10 years. YVR’s 2015-2019 Environmental Management Plan sets the framework for all environmental initiatives, which include reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 33 per cent as well as other ambitious environmental goals.

Ongoing projects at YVR: October update

There are several key projects currently taking place that will enhance the airport experience. This is all possible due to YVR’s unique operating structure—a community-based organization that reinvests its profits into the airport and region. The multi-year expansion projects currently underway will help YVR meet growing passenger demand and better connect British Columbians and local businesses to the world, while improving the airport experience for everyone. Terminal • Construction is underway in Air Canada’s Domestic Terminal check-in area for the installation of new selfservice bag drops. Hoarding has been added around the work area and is expected to be complete in December. • There may be intermittent noise at the Transborder area during daytime hours. This work is being done to improve YVR processes for transfer passengers. • Construction continues near Transborder check-in to make several enhancements to the area. Work includes replacing the check-in kiosks with the newest model, movement of a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) unit, relocating the information counter and some other minor updates. • Construction for a new entrance to gate E85 is underway. Once complete in March 2020, it will connect passengers from Level 3 to the Level 2 remote stand operations (RSO) facility. This work includes the addition of new elevators and escalators. • As construction continues

on a number of YVR’s new food and beverage and retail options, passengers can expect to see various hoarding around the terminal. • As part of the International Pier D expansion project, various work is taking place. While much of the work is taking place airside, passengers can expect to see hoarding near the end of Pier D. This may include noisy work. Given that there are 24-hour operations in this part of the terminal, YVR understands that this could potentially be disruptive for those with flights at nearby gates. If you are looking for somewhere quiet, seating can be found in the creek area near the food court. • New exit doors are being installed in the Domestic Terminal post-security, near A-B gates. Hoarding will be in place and work is anticipated to be complete by December.

In and Around Sea Island Safety is a top priority at YVR. With a large number of ongoing projects, customers are reminded to follow all signage, traffic delineators and flaggers in the construction areas. • In October, work is beginning on an upgrade project to the Arthur Laing Bridge. This work will take place between Monday and Friday from 9pm to 5am and is expected to be complete by December. Lane closures are required in order to facilitate this work. Closures will be limited to the area of work and one lane will remain open at all times. For work impacting bike lanes, cyclists will be required to share the road with vehicular traffic. • Construction continues on YVR’s new Parkade and Central Utilities Building. This includes work around the old Value Lot off Grant McConachie Way, as well as within the existing Parkade.

There are various traffic control measures in place for cars arriving and departing from the terminal near this site. O In the existing Parkade, customers will notice fencing, temporary pedestrian walkways and some stalls blocked. This work is for several upgrade projects including building new entry ramps as well as the installation of an automated parking guidance system. O As part of utilities work to connect a new GeoExchange system to the terminal, there are nightly lane closures directly outside the old Value Lot on Grant McConachie Way. This work will be ongoing until December and will take place between 9:30pm and 7am. One lane will be maintained throughout for inbound traffic. • There are also several relat-

ed projects near the site including: O A new crosswalk, which is now open outside of International Arrivals on Level 2. Pedestrians are asked to follow all directional signage in the area. The existing crosswalk will be temporarily closed until the end of the year. O Work is taking place outside International Arrivals in Chester Johnson Park. In order to facilitate the work, a section of the park is closed. O A period of significant excavation from the project site continues. In line with YVR’s commitment to sustainability and construction waste diversion, the valuable earthworks materials will be transported to an unused parcel of land south of the BCIT campus on Russ Baker Way. While there are no current plans to develop

Construction

this site, this is an opportunity to re-use and recycle valuable materials to prepare the land for potential future development. • YVR is planning to redevelop approximately 18 hectares of land on airport property in the Templeton area, adjacent to the Burkeville residential neighbourhood. The redevelopment will include a cargo and logistics facility and a linear greenspace for community use. Site preparation work is now underway to prepare the project site for redevelopment. O As part of this work, crews are demolishing and removing the decommissioned Templeton building. The demolition and associated clean-up are expected to be complete this month. • Little Wings Daycare is relocating from their existing site to the south-west corner of Miller Road and Templeton, adjacent to Sea Island Elementary and Park and Fly. This move is necessary due to their current lease ending. To prepare the area for this relocation, work includes preparation of a ditch crossing, as well as earthworks on the project site and installation of site services and utilities. Parking • A section of McDonald Road is closed for construction traffic only. This work is part of the project to extend the east apron for Remote Stand Operations. Please follow all directional signage to the new McDonald Road, located east of North Service Place. For more information, visit yvr.ca/construction.

DI S T R I B U T I O N:

On September 24, I delivered a speech to an audience of almost 300 people who were mostly too busy researching potential jobs to notice. While this would usually be cause for alarm, in this case— at YVR’s first Open House and Inclusive Hiring Fair for Persons with Disabilities—I was thrilled to somewhat lose the crowd. To be honest, it made me wonder why we haven’t done this sooner. As co-chair of the Presidents Group, which is an organization that’s committed to helping businesses better attract persons with disabilities, I constantly talk to influential leaders on ways we can reach one of the most under-represented employment groups in Canada. The answer, it appears, is very simple: invite them over. And order lots of

refreshments. There’s an untapped talent pool of more than 600,000 people in British Columbia who identify as having a disability. These individuals have a vast range of skills and experiences, not to mention unique personalities and perspectives—a crucial asset for any business. In just 2025, B.C. employers will need to fill an estimated onemillion job openings. We could cut that down significantly by engaging this group. What’s more, studies show that persons with disabilities make great employees, with high retention, strong performance and low turnover. One reason why, I have learned, is they are grateful to have been given an opportunity to find a career path, to be inde-

pendent and, for many, to have that first real job with responsibilities, successes and challenges. Many of us take that for granted, not realizing the inherent privilege we carry with us every day, finding negatives in what many would see as an ideal scenario. So why is the representation of persons with disabilities so low in many organizations? And note that Vancouver Airport Authority is not dodging this one; our figures from 2017 show that persons with disabilities make up less than the labour force average in our workforce (see page 134 in our annual report for more). This is a stat we are determined to change. There is no single answer, but I have observed some reoccurring issues: many people are

unaware of what opportunities are out there, many organizations are unaware of this untapped talent pool and how to reach out to them and, unfortunately, we all have biases of some kind— whether conscious or not— which discourage applications in the first place. We’re constantly working on this at YVR. We offer our employees unconscious bias training, making sure they recognize the signs that lead them to unintentionally avoid interacting with persons with disabilities, often out of a fear of offending (very Canadian). And we are always improving the airport, upgrading the terminal to make sure everyone is comfortable flying through YVR.

Language Line video now available Each year, YVR welcomes millions of passengers from all over the world and with them a wide variety of languages. In keeping with the airport’s commitment to deliver an outstanding customer experience, several services are available to meet the needs of all passengers, including the popular Language Line, which offers phone interpretation in more than 240 languages. Recently, YVR launched its latest service: real-time video interpretation available 24/7 in 36 languages, including American Sign Language.

The new service, which passengers can request through frontline staff, complements the existing Language Line and allows the airport to better serve passengers who are deaf or hard of hearing. It also supports YVR’s goal of greater accessibility by making the airport a more inclusive and welcoming place for everyone. To learn more about YVR’s accessibility initiatives, which range from features supporting people with mobility, hearing and vision loss to developmental disabilities, visit yvr.ca/accessibility.

But what it’s really all about is living up to our commitment. As a not-for-profit, communitybased organization, YVR has a responsibility to reflect our region. Everyone has a role to play in our community and it should thus be the same at our airport, which is only strengthened by every new perspective that contributes to its ongoing success. We are always trying to improve, and I welcome any advice on what we could do better. In addition, I encourage all businesses to open their doors, talk with this valuable group of people and know that by doing this we are all building a better workforce for everyone.

YVR Services

Universal access is a fundamental component of customer care at YVR and a new real-time video interpretation Language Line is now available in 36 languages, including American Sign Language.

Fly it Forward flights introduces girls and women of all ages to flight on a small aircraft to celebrate the anniversary of the world’s first female pilot licence during the annual Women of Aviation Worldwide Week. Photo: courtesy WOAW.

On March 8, 1910, Raymonde de Laroche earned the world’s first female pilot licence—a commercial licence, the only type at the time. In doing so, she formally opened the doors of aviation for all women. When de Laroche received licence number 36, the female pilot population stood at three per cent. Nearly 110 years later, the percentage of female pilots worldwide is less than three per cent. Some countries still have none. In 2010, Mireille Goyer, founder and president of the Institute for Women Of Aviation Worldwide (iWOAW) launched the Fly it Forward Challenge to celebrate the centennial of the formal entry of women in the air and space industry. The goal was to introduce record numbers of women and girls to aviation, in order to address the striking gender gap in some of the industry’s occupations. Since Goyer’s 2010 call to action, aviation enthusiasts, professionals and corporations have rallied to introduce 314,000 women and girls to aviation and conducted 61,265 Fly it Forward flights as part of Women Of Aviation Worldwide Week. To mark the 10th anniversary of the Week (March 2-8, 2020), iWOAW has announced the value for its top Fly it Forward Scholarship will be $10,000 CAD. The scholarship funding is made possible by simulator and

training provider CAE, which is a corporate ally of iWOAW. With civil aviation training facilities in 35 countries, CAE will also offer the 2020 winner a VIP visit to one of the CAE pilot training centres closest to where she lives. To become eligible to win this scholarship, women and girls (age 10 and older) must go on their first small-aircraft flight during Women Of Aviation Worldwide Week. They may also attend one of the hundreds of free events taking place across the globe during the Week or visit a local flight school and take a discovery flight. The latter must be registered online with WOAW. Those who then take the “second step” of taking flying lessons are eligible for the scholarship by becoming the first-to-solo after their 2020 initial flight. By reporting their experience on the Week’s official website, WomenOfAviationWeek. org, before the March 12, 2020 deadline, participants automatically become a candidate for the scholarship. The $10,000 winner will be the first woman, among all eligible candidates, to document flying solo. Additional scholarships may be available depending on the level of donations in the Fly it Forward Fund at the beginning of the March 2020 Women Of Aviation Worldwide Week. For complete participation details, please visit WomenOfAviationWeek.org.

IATA launches gender diversity campaign

Photo: courtesy IATA.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA), which represents some 290 airlines—82 per cent of global air traffic—has launched a 25by2025Campaign—an airline industry initiative to advance gender diversity in the airline industry by 2025. The campaign is a voluntary commitment by participating IATA member airlines. Key among the commitments of airlines participating in the 25by2025 Campaign are: • Increasing the number of women in senior positions (to be defined by the member airlines) by either 25 per cent against currently reported metrics or to minimum representation of 25 per cent by 2025 • Increasing the number of

women in under-represented jobs (e.g., pilots and operations) by either 25 per cent against currently reported metrics or to a minimum representation of 25 per cent by 2025 • Reporting annually on key diversity metrics IATA member airlines who have already signed up to the 25by2025 Campaign include China Eastern, Lufthansa Group and Qatar Airways. Currently, there is no comprehensive airline industry-wide gender diversity statistical report. But, with women representing around five per cent of the global pilot population and three per cent of CEOs, the gender imbalance in the industry speaks for itself. In addition to the commit-

ments from member airlines under the 25by2025 Campaign, IATA will also be making the following commitments: • Increasing the representation of women in IATA’s senior management (directors and above) from the current 19 per cent to at least 25 per cent by 2025. • Working with member airlines to increase the number of women they appoint to IATA governance roles from the current 17 per cent to a minimum of 25 per cent by 2025. • Ensuring that the number of women participating as panelists / speakers at IATA conferences is a minimum of 25 per cent by 2025. • Creating a forum for sharing diversity and inclusion initiatives and best practices across the industry and publishing annual industry statistics on gender diversity. “Our work will not be done in 2025, in fact, this is only the beginning,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s director general and CEO. “Our ultimate aim is, of course, for a 50-50 gender split with equal opportunities for everyone in every part of our industry.”

Hockey season means the return of Air Canada Fan Flight

Air Canada Fan Flight returns for the 2019/2020 NHL season. Photo: Air Canada.

It’s that time of the year in Canada, when the puck drops on another NHL season and fans from coast to coast cheer for their favourite teams. In that spirit, Air Canada has announced the return of Fan Flight (#ACFanFlight)—a season-long program that rewards deserving fans with a VIP game experience, including the opportunity to see their team play either at home or on the road.

Fan Flight rewards fans in several ways, including in-arena giveaways during promo nights and by flying lucky fans to away games. It also recognizes deserving young sports fans, nominated by the Air Canada Foundation, who are making their mark in their communities, giving them the unforgettable experience of watching their favourite team play

at home and away games. For its pre-season warm-up, Air Canada undertook a range of exciting activities nationwide for the #BackToHockey season. Last month, the airline surprised and delighted fans at airports with game tickets and gifts and recognized two lucky fans during pre-season games in Atlantic Canada. Learn more at aircanada.com/ backtohockey.

SERVING THE AVIATION INDUSTRY Retired Boeing 777 Captain Judy Cameron, Air Canada’s first female pilot.

Air Canada will award $20,000 per year for three years to establish the Captain Judy Cameron Scholarship in honour of the airline’s first female pilot. The Captain Judy Cameron scholarship targets young women in pursuit of non-traditional aviation careers as commercial pilots or aircraft maintenance engineers who may not have the financial means to do so. The scholarship was announced at last month’s Elsie MacGill Award Gala in Toronto, the national award program of the Northern Lights Aero Foundation, which recognizes and celebrates the achievements

of accomplished women in aviation and aerospace. Judy Cameron became the first female pilot hired by Air Canada, in April 1978 at the age of 23. She was the first woman to graduate from Selkirk College’s Aviation Technology Program in 1975. Throughout her 40-year flying career and more than 23,000 hours, she has flown the DC-3, Twin Otter, Hawker Siddeley 748, DC-9, Lockheed 1011, Airbus 320, Boeing 767 and Boeing 777 to the far corners of the world. Cameron became a captain in 1997, and in 2010 became the first female captain in Canada of a Boeing 777, the largest aircraft

in Air Canada’s fleet. She retired in 2015, received the Elsie MacGill Northern Lights award in the Flight Operations category that year, and in 2016 was chosen by the 99s (International Organization of Women Pilots) to be on its Canadian postage stamp. Applications for the Captain Judy Cameron Scholarship will be accepted as of November 1, 2019. It will be open to all women who are Canadian citizens who have been accepted, are enrolled or are considering a post-secondary aviation flight program or aircraft repair and maintenance program.

Airport Improvement Fee increased to meet future growth Last month, in an address to the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority, announced that Vancouver International Airport (YVR) will be increasing its Airport Improvement Fee (AIF) to meet forecasted growth and ensure the airport’s longterm financial health. The AIF will increase from $20 to $25 effective January 1, 2020 for passengers travelling to destinations outside of B.C. Following the increase, YVR’s AIF will continue to be one of the lowest among the eight major Canadian airports, with only Ottawa International Airport collecting a lower fee of $23. Additionally, YVR is the only major airport to offer a heavily discounted rate for regional travel at $5 for flights within B.C. and to the Yukon. In his address, Richmond also shared early results from YVR’s latest economic impact study, showcasing the airport’s role in driving economic benefits for the region.

Through its operations, tourism and cargo, YVR helps facilitate $20.2 billion in total economic output, $10.4 billion in total Gross Domestic Product and $1.4 billion in total government revenue in B.C. In addition, YVR supports more than 26,500 jobs on Sea Island and more than 126,000 jobs across the province. These numbers are up significantly from YVR’s previous economic impact study in 2015. YVR earns revenue from three main sources: aeronautical revenue (25 per cent), non-aeronautical revenue (44 per cent) and the AIF (31 per cent), as of 2018. First introduced in 1993, the AIF can only be used to pay for capital infrastructure projects such as terminals and runways. It is an essential revenue stream as the Canadian government does not provide funding to operate YVR. Revenue generated from aeronautical and non-aeronautical sources is not enough to cover both the costs of operating YVR and the major capital projects needed to enhance and

airport to deliver on its public mandate—to provide economic and social benefits to its communities. Given this growth, YVR is currently underway with a multibillion-dollar capital expansion program that will see up to 75 major projects completed over the next 20 years.

Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) is in the middle of a complete $3.6-billion rebuild, with its new South Concourse scheduled to open on September 15, 2020, with Phase Two—the North Concourse—set to open in 2024. The new airport promises to be a game changer for the growing and thriving capital city of Utah. Efficient arrivals and departures, an expansive light-filled terminal offering dramatic views of the towering Wasatch Mountains, outstanding food and cutting-edge retail, are all part of the rebuild that is designed to make the airport an extension of the overall Salt Lake City and Utah experience. Additionally, a new Utah Transit Authority TRAX station

at the SLC South Concourse terminal will provide fast and efficient travel into downtown Salt Lake City. SLC currently serves more than 25-million passengers a year, relying on facilities that were designed 50 years ago to serve half as many travellers, yet it still ranks as one of the most on-time airports for arrivals and departures every year. There will be 29 stores opening in the first phase, including Coach, Frye, King’s English, Hip & Humble and MAC, along with dining options that include eateries offering breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. Delta Airlines offers non-stop flights from YVR to SLC. For more information, visit delta. com.

Board Now leads the way towards sustainable flying Dutch company SkyNRG, a global leader in sustainable aviation fuel, has launched Board Now, the world’s first program that enables companies to contribute directly to the development of sustainable fuel for the aviation industry and actively paves the way for the transition to this energy sector. Organizations that join Board Now commit to purchase sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for a period of five years. With this commitment, they not only reduce their own

business air travel CO2 emissions, but also contribute to the development of a new production facility. The investment by Board Now members will be used by SkyNRG to cover the price difference between sustainable aviation fuel and conventional jet fuel. The coalition that participates in the Board Now program, ensures a substantial purchase of SAF, which will be produced by Europe’s first dedicated plant for the production of sustainable

aviation fuel. Earlier this year, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines already committed to the annual purchase of 75,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel from the European plant, which will annually produce 100,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel. This will mean a CO2 reduction of more than 270,000 tonnes a year for the aviation industry. Sustainable aviation fuel can provide for a CO2 reduction of at least 85 per cent, compared to conventional jet fuel.

Airbus Helicopter—ACH145—to be on-board helicopter for world’s largest superyacht.

Airbus Helicopters is to provide the on-board helicopter for the REV Ocean research and expedition vessel—the world’s largest superyacht. The research expedition vessel, which is 183-metres long, is the flagship of Norwegian businessman and philanthropist Kjell Inge Røkke’s not-for-profit oceanic research foundation, REV Ocean. It will carry one of the first examples of the new Airbus ACH145, with five-blade rotor and increased maximum take-off weight.

The helicopter, which can operate from either of two helidecks on the yacht, plays a key role in passenger transport and re-supply as well as its primary scientific mission. Launched in 2019 and due for certification early in 2020, the new Airbus ACH145 has a bearingless five-blade rotor, which replaces an existing hingeless four-blade rotor and provides 150 kilograms additional useful loadcarrying capability. REV Ocean was established as a result of Røkke signing the Giving Pledge campaign in 2017,

vowing to give away more than 50 per cent of his fortune to philanthropic causes. Any profit generated is reinvested into the work program for a healthier ocean. As well as the ACH145, the vessel is equipped with scientific trawls, sonar systems, laboratories, auditorium and classrooms, moonpool, unmanned aerial vehicle, a remotely operated submarine with 6,000 metres depth capacity and advanced communication equipment. It has a crew of up to 35 and can carry 60 scientists.

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) made from renewable feedstocks is a clean substitute for fossil fuels, made from organic waste streams such as used cooking oil. Compared to conventional kerosene, flying on SAF reduces CO2 by more than 85 per cent and has a positive impact on local air quality.

Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation—SpaceJet, formerly known as the Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ).

Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation plans to establish their Canadian footprint in the Montreal region of Quebec. Having launched the Mitsubishi SpaceJet family of aircraft earlier this year and opened their U.S. headquarters in Renton, Washington, the company is looking to prepare for the next phase of its global growth.

The birthplace of commercial aviation in Canada, Quebec has a long history of innovation and contribution in the regional category of aircraft. As a result, it is am aerospace hub and home to leading air and space companies, including some of Mitsubishi Aircraft’s existing partners. In its first year in the

Montreal area, Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation intends to create approximately 100 jobs focused on certification and entry into service of the Mitsubishi SpaceJet products. The company plans to increase that number in the following years. The office will be located in Boisbriand, an off-island suburb of Montreal.

Last month, the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows, soared over Vancouver and Victoria as part of the final Canadian stop on their biggestever tour to North America. This was the first time the Red Arrows visited Vancouver, part of a fourcity tour in Canada. In addition to special back-toback flypasts over both Victoria and Vancouver harbours, a public programme began with an exclusive screening of the UK documentary Red Arrows: Kings of the Skies followed by a Q&A

with members of the team at Science World at TELUS World of Science. To celebrate the visit, iconic Vancouver landmarks were illuminated in red, white, and blue. These included Science World at TELUS World of Science, the Olympic Cauldron at Jack Poole Plaza, the Vancouver Convention Centre and the iconic five sails at Canada Place at the Port of Vancouver. As part of their visit, members of the Red Arrows also made a special visit to Canuck Place

Children’s Hospice for a chance to connect with the young children receiving care at the facility. More than 765 children living with life-threatening illnesses and their families receive care from Canuck Place. The Red Arrows team also met with local students to promote careers in aviation, science and technology. The tour provided a chance to celebrate and enhance international trade between the UK and Canada, which was worth more than $27 billion in 2018.

Also touring with the Red Arrows aerobatic team across North America was this Atlas A400M transport jet.

KLM celebrates its centenary with the unveiling of its 100th Delftware miniature house. Photo: Floris Heuer, courtesy KLM.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, the world’s oldest international airline still operating under its original name, marks its 100th anniversary this month. In keeping with tradition, the airline has unveiled a new Delftware miniature house—a moment eagerly awaited by faithful collectors all over the world. This year’s miniature is a replica of Huis ten Bosch Palace in The Hague, the home of King Willem-Alexander and his family. Huis ten Bosch Palace was built in the mid-17th century at the behest of Prince Frederik Hendrik of Orange and his wife Amalia van Solms. It was extended in the first half of the 18th century by Prince Willem

IV. After Willem I was crowned King of the Netherlands in 1815, the palace was regularly home to members of the Dutch royal family. Since January 2019, Huis ten Bosch Palace has been the residence of King WillemAlexander, Queen Máxima and their three daughters. The palace also serves as a ceremonial venue. “To me, Huis ten Bosch Palace symbolizes the special bond between KLM and the Netherlands and the fact that we have borne the predicate Royal for the past 100 years,” said Pieter Elbers, KLM president and CEO. “It is, therefore, a point of pride and honour that our 100th Delftware miniature is a replica of this very special building.”

Since the 1950s, KLM has presented specially designed Delftware miniature houses to World Business Class passengers on intercontinental flights. The houses are replicas of monumental buildings throughout the Netherlands. The number of houses in the collection has kept pace with KLM’s anniversary since 1994, with new miniatures added to the collection on or around KLM’s anniversary on October 7. KLM will also mark its centenary with a special book titled Welcome Aboard – 100 years of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. For information on KLM flights from YVR to Amsterdam, visit klm.com.

A new Vancouver-designed, direct-to-consumer luggage brand has launched a line of premium suitcases for the North American travel market. Inspired by the Japanese term Mono No Aware—an almost untranslatable phrase that seeks to express the profound appreciation of beauty in fleeting moments—the company’s three founders, Victor Tam, Hubert Chan and Daniel Shin left their previous companies and set about creating the type of luggage they would want to buy. After successfully selling out their initial pre-order stock in just three hours in 2018, the entrepreneurs and long-time friends focused their efforts on building the Monos brand, touted as the “Apple of Suitcases” and creating a superior suitcase for consumers. “We are passionate about creating more than just a brand, but a lifestyle that helps people travel more mindfully,” said Victor

In 2015, Kenneth Lieblich found himself suddenly unemployed. In his early 40s, he had established a decades-long career in public policy and government, including working in the House of Commons and assisting former Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance Colin Hansen. His income supported his wife and their four children and paid his Vancouver mortgage. “I panicked,” said Lieblich. “The organization that I worked with had a financial meltdown and let a bunch of people go. And I didn’t have any immediate job prospects.” That was when his wife Lydia reminded him of his lifelong love for airports and airplanes. She came across the Airport Operations diploma program at BCIT and invited him to attend an upcoming info session with her. “We went and it was fascinating,” said Lieblich. “It sounded like it could be really exciting, but at the same time, it was concerning because this was January 2016 and they told me there was a two-year waiting list.” Buoyed, however, by the

prospect of realizing a dream, Lieblich applied. He was accepted into the program and began studying in the fall of 2017. “My wife and children gave up an awful lot for me to do this and that weighed very heavily on my mind when I was at BCIT,” said Lieblich. “It was a long time that we were without an income. We have four young children, two with special needs: my eldest has Type 1 diabetes and my son is blind. My family relied on me. I needed to make this count.” If the pressure to support his family wasn’t already daunting enough, Lieblich said he was, by far, the oldest person in his class at BCIT. But this taught him a valuable skill. “It was strange at first, but the teamwork aspect of the program gave me the chance to work with people who may be younger, have different experiences and have different approaches to work,” he recalled. “Being able to work with so many different people has proven to be integral to succeeding on a day-to-day basis in my job.” That new dream job is with

the Vancouver Airport Authority, where Lieblich started as senior advisor on government relations and is now working in the customer care department. After achieving a 95-per cent average at BCIT, earning five scholarships and awards during his time there, being chosen as valedictorian for his graduating class and serving as the BCIT student representative on the BC Aviation Council Communications Committee, he was more than qualified for his new role at North America’s topranked airport. He became a BCIT alumnus in February 2019, and was later awarded the prestigious Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Trades in recognition of his outstanding achievement and leadership as a student. Lieblich is proof that a midcareer professional can successfully change their ‘flight’ path, especially when they find a vocation they truly love. “My perfect day would include sitting at the end of the runway watching planes all day,” he said. “Now that would be just about as good as it gets.”

Bombardier’s Global 7500 business jet has once again flown another mission in excess of 14,000 kilometres, successfully connecting Sydney and Detroit in one non-stop flight, the longest city-pair in business aviation in history flown by a purpose-built aircraft. Point-to-point distance between the two cities is approximately 15,232 kilometres, eclipsing the 14,797-kilometres distance between Singapore and Tucson, which

the plane previously flew. The aircraft’s combination of performance, size and comfort has been widely applauded with a string of prestigious awards, among them Robb Report’s Business Jet of the Year for 2019, the 2019 Aviation Week Grand Laureate Award and a Red Dot Award for design. The Global 7500’s aircraft cabin offers spaciousness that is unique among business jets and features an award-winning interior that includes a full-size

multi-functional kitchen space and a stateroom with a permanent bed. Other amenities include Bombardier’s patented Nuage seat, with an all-new deep recline position designed for comfort and relaxation on long-haul flights. Additionally, an innovative Soleil lighting system, aviation’s first circadian rhythmbased cabin lighting technology, features a Dynamic Daylight Simulation designed to help combat jet lag.

The City of Richmond’s first-of-itskind Electric Vehicle (EV) infrastructure requirement has been recognized with a Climate & Energy Action Award from the Community Energy Association. The Climate & Energy Action Award recognizes climate leadership of BC local governments. In December 2017, the City of Richmond was the first municipality to enact a policy requiring that 100 per cent new residential parking spaces be equipped with Level 2 electric vehicle charging capacity, featuring an energized, 208 to 240-volt outlet at each parking stall. This electric vehicle infrastructure requirement was introduced to help the City of Richmond achieve its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging more sustainable transpor-

tation options. “To the best of our knowledge, the City of Richmond was the first city in North America to implement this type of policy,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “In the past 18 months, Richmond’s leadership has influenced many of the region’s large municipalities to also adopt similar EV charging infrastructure requirements for 100 per cent of new residential parking spaces.” This was the second award the City of Richmond received in recognition of its EV infrastructure requirement. In September 2018, the City was honoured with the UBCM Community Excellence Award for governance.
