On December 5th, YVR and Quest Food Exchange collected a record 1,289 food hampers for the 2019 holiday season. The hampers, which included all the essentials for a holiday meal, were collected and counted at The Spirit of the Haida Gwaii: The Jade Canoe. For every hamper collected, YVR donated a turkey and Quest provided fresh seasonal vegetables. Hampers were then distributed to families in need across the Lower Mainland. “Supporting our community is fundamental to YVR, and we strive to take care of our neighbours,” said Kim Halowski, manager, community relations for YVR. “Quest Food Exchange is one of our incredible community partners who makes a difference in the community and we are extremely proud of the work they do. Over the years, we have introduced Quest to a number of YVR business partners, who have found ways to work together to reduce food waste at YVR and to help families in need.” Since the Hamper Drive

started in 2011, Quest has received donations of more than 7,000 meals. Quest works to reduce hunger in local communities by providing dignified access to affordable and sustainable food options in not-for-profit grocery markets to those who face food security challenges in British Columbia. “Over the past decade, YVR has been one of the most significant support-

ers of Quest; from providing three refrigerated trucks, to hosting a penny drive, to donating 5,835 holiday hampers [prior to 2019’s event] that enabled 29,175 individuals to share a turkey dinner with loved ones,” said Elizabeth Lewis-Crudgington, executive director, Quest Food Exchange. “On behalf of the entire Quest Food Exchange team and board of directors,

we would like to thank YVR Airport Authority and the Sea Island community for placing their trust in Quest to facilitate the distribution of hampers to hundreds of clients of social service agencies throughout the Lower Mainland.” As a community-focused organization, YVR supports programs that empower communities in Metro Vancouver and beyond, donating more

than $1 million annually to more than 50 organizations that have created innovative programs to help their communities. Partnerships such as the one with Quest are part of YVR’s commitment to bring social benefits to the communities the airport serves, while also bringing the Sea Island community together for an event that celebrates the spirit of giving.

Change is in the air at YVR: January update

Construction

There are several key projects currently taking place at YVR to enhance the airport experience. This is all possible due to YVR’s unique operating structure—a community-based organization that reinvests its profits into the airport and the region. The multi-year expansion project currently underway is designed to help YVR meet growing passenger demand and better connect British Columbians and local businesses to the world, while improving the airport experience for everyone. Terminal • Construction continues near Transborder check-in to make several enhancements to the area. Work includes replacing the check-in kiosks with the newest model, movement of a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) unit, relocating the information counter and some other minor updates. • Work has begun on an upgrade project to the ceiling pre-security, near the A/B screening point. As part of the construction, there will be scaffolding in the area. • In December, a new holdroom opened in YVR’s Transborder terminal for remote stand operations (RSO). The hold-

outside International Arrivals in Chester Johnson Park. In order to facilitate the work, a section of the park is closed. • YVR is planning to redevelop approximately 17 hectares of land on airport property in the Templeton area, adjacent to the Burkeville residential neighbourhood. The redevelopment will include a cargo and logistics facility and a linear greenspace for community use. Site preparation work is now underway to prepare the project site for redevelopment. For more information on these projects, visit yvr.ca/construction.

room includes four new bus positions and gate counters. Work is still underway on this project and once complete, it will connect passengers from Level 3 to the Level 2 remote stand operations (RSO) facility. This work includes the addition of new elevators and escalators. • As construction continues on several new food and beverage and retail options at YVR, passengers can expect to see various hoarding around the terminal. • As part of the International Pier D expansion project, various work is taking place. While much of the work is taking place airside, passengers can expect to see hoarding near the end of Pier D. This may include noisy work and given that there are 24-hour operations in this part of the terminal, YVR understands that this could potentially be disruptive for those with flights at nearby gates. Passengers looking for somewhere quiet can find seating in the creek area, near the food court. In and Around Sea Island Safety is a top priority at YVR. With this large number of

ongoing projects, customers are reminded to follow all signage, traffic delineators and flaggers in the construction areas. • Construction is continuing on YVR’s new Parkade and Central Utilities Building. This includes work around the old Value Lot off of Grant McConachie Way, as well as within the existing Parkade. There are various traffic control measures in place for cars arriving and departing from the terminal near this site. • In the existing Parkade, customers will notice fencing, temporary pedestrian walkways and some stalls blocked. This work is for several upgrade projects,

including building new entry ramps, as well as the installation of an automated parking guidance system. • As part of utilities work to connect a new GeoExchange system to the terminal, there is a lane closed off directly outside the old Value Lot on Grant McConachie Way. Two lanes are being maintained throughout for inbound traffic. • District energy piping will also be installed as part of this project, which requires a full curbside closure of Level 1 for a six-month period, scheduled to start on January 14, 2020. Every

effort is being made to reduce the impact of construction on airport tenants and passengers. Pedestrians will still be able to access the Parkade from the Domestic Terminal Building Level 1 through designated walking routes. • There are also several related projects near the site, including: • A new crosswalk, which is now open outside of International Arrivals on Level 2. Pedestrians are asked to follow all directional signage in the area. The existing crosswalk will be temporarily closed. • Work that is taking place

Level 1 road access to Domestic Terminal closed As part of the new Parkade and Central Utilities Building project, YVR is installing district energy piping, which necessitates a full curbside closure of Level 1 for a six-month period, starting on January 14, 2020. Each year, Vancouver Airport Authority recognizes exceptional Sea Island businesses for their outstanding commitment, enthusiasm and innovation in improving the environment with a YVR Green Excellence Award (formerly known as the Clear Skies Award). Since 2011, this award has been given to YVR tenants in recognition of a diverse range of environmental services, ranging from a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and waste to improving water efficiency and ecosystem health on Sea Island. Most recently, Air Canada and Fairmont Vancouver Airport received a 2019 YVR Green Excellence Award in the airside/ groundside and in-terminal categories, respectively. In recent years, Air Canada’s carbon footprint was reduced in its cargo facility and operations centre through the installation of LED lighting and improved heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) efficiency. Last year, Air Canada also installed 12 electric vehicle chargers, rolled out new recycling stations in its operations center and reduced water consumption by replacing flush valves in its large hangars. Additionally, on a rainy September day, Air Canada employees were out in force with 345 volunteers during a beach cleanup that was organized with 4Ocean, an organization with a mission to clean the oceans and coastlines.

Sustainability KLM trials closed-loop recycling for catering supplies

During KLM’s innovative closed-loop test, specially adapted dessert and salad trays, lids, plastic glasses and hot meal trays were washed and checked before being recycled.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has trialled a closed-loop recycling system for catering materials collected from four flights from Amsterdam to Vancouver. The airline collected catering waste material, including plastic food containers, cups, covers and cutlery from the flights, which were then cleaned and recycled on another flight to Vancouver. The materials for the products were adapted especially for the test. Dessert and salad bowls, lids and glasses for the

flight were made of a material with a lower specific gravity than the original, which allowed them to be washed and properly recycled into new catering equipment. KLM is the first airline to test a closed-loop recycling system, which is part of the airline’s commitment to create a sustainable future for air transportation. “The test fits in with KLM’s sustainability initiative Fly Responsibly and should contribute to the goal of reducing the volume of waste by 50 per cent

by 2030, compared to 2011,” said Martine van Streun, KLM director cabin product & service engineering. Through KLM’s Fly Responsibly Program, the airline invites its customers to take part in its CO2 compensation program or its Corporate BioFuel Program to reduce the carbon footprint caused by KLM flights. More information about KLM’s initiatives for improving the sustainability of air transportation is available at flyresponsibly.klm.com.

Harbour Air’s historic ePlane flight ushers in the future of aviation Harbour Air, North America’s largest seaplane airline and magniX, the company powering the electric aviation revolution, made history last month with a successful flight of the world’s first all-electric commercial aircraft. Piloted by Harbour Air CEO and founder Greg McDougall, the flight of the ePlane, a six-passenger DHC-2 de Havilland Beaver magnified by a 750-horsepower (560 kW) magni500 propulsion system, took place on the Fraser River at Harbour Air Seaplanes terminal at YVR South. “Today, we made history,” said Greg McDougall, CEO and founder of Harbour Air Seaplanes. “I am incredibly proud of Harbour Air’s leadership role in re-defining safety and innovation in the aviation and seaplane industry. Canada has long held an iconic role in the history of aviation, and to be part of this incredible world-first milestone is something we can all be really proud of.” Earlier this year, Harbour Air announced its partnership with magniX and the company’s intention to build the world’s first completely electric commercial seaplane fleet. The magni500, is a high-power-

density electric propulsion system that provides a clean and efficient way to power airplanes. “In December 1903, the Wright Brothers launched a new era of transportation—the aviation age—with the first flight of a powered aircraft. Today, 116 years later, with the first flight of an all-electric powered commercial aircraft, we launched the electric era of aviation,” said Roei Ganzarski, CEO of magniX. “The transportation industry and specifically the aviation segment that has been, for the

most part, stagnant since the late 1930s, is ripe for a massive disruption. Now we are proving that low-cost, environmentally friendly, commercial electric air travel can be a reality in the very near future.” Harbour Air and magniX will now begin the certification and approval process for the propulsion system and retrofitting aircraft. Once the certification is complete, the rest of Harbour Air’s fleet can be magnified with magniX’s all-electric propulsion technology.

Canada’s new air passenger bill of rights Last month, the Canadian Transportation Agency’s (CTA) second half of Canada’s air passenger rights’ bill, which outlines what form of compensation passengers are entitled to when their flights are delayed or cancelled, came into effect. The CTA’s first phase of the passenger bill of rights was introduced in July 2019 and laid out new rules for airlines to follow, including clear communication to passengers and compensation guidelines in the event of denied boarding, overbooking, lost or damaged baggage and the transportation of musical instruments. The final set of regulations require airlines flying to, from and within Canada to compensate passengers for flight delays

that are within their control and not related to safety. The amount of compensation is dependant on the size of the airline and the length of delay. Larger carriers, such as Air Canada and WestJet, will be required to pay from $400 to $1,000, depending on the length of the delay. While smaller airlines, such as Porter and Swoop, will be required to pay from $125 to $500. In addition to compensation, in the event of a flight delay airlines will be expected to provide a minimum “standard of treatment”—food and drink, free Wi-Fi, and overnight accommodation and free transport to the accommodation if the delay is expected to extend into the night.

Along with compensation for delays and cancellations, the passenger protections lay out rules for seating children on a plane at no additional charge to the customer as follows: • Under the age of 5: in a seat adjacent to guardian • Aged 5 to 11: in the same row and separated by no more than one seat from guardian • Aged 12 or 13: separated by no more than one row from guardian The onus will be on passengers to file a claim for compensation under the new passenger protections, the onus will be on passengers to file a claim for compensation. Travellers will have one year to make a claim with the airline

responsible for a flight disruption. Following that, the airline will have 30 days to respond to the complaint, either by issuing

compensation or an explanation as to why it thinks it’s not owed. If the dispute cannot be resolved directly between the

passenger and the airline, the passenger can file a complaint with the CTA through its website at otc-cta.gc.ca.

CTA issues determination on acquisition of WestJet and Swoop by Onex

The Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) has determined that WestJet and its ultra low-cost carrier Swoop would continue to meet the Canadian ownership and control requirements following their proposed acquisition by an affiliate of Onex. Onex Corporation is a publicly traded company and asset manager that manages capital on behalf of shareholders, institutional investors and high net worth clients around the world. The CTA’s determina-

tion that WestJet and Swoop would remain Canadian is on the condition that Onex amends its by-laws to ensure that any matters pertaining to and affecting WestJet and Swoop are voted on at Board of Directors’ meetings, where most Canadian directors are present. The CTA ruling is key, because in order to hold a domestic licence the Canada Transportation Act requires carriers to be Canadian and controlled

by Canadians. The CTA has stated that the requirement to be Canadian is an ongoing one and for WestJet and Swoop to remain Canadian, Onex must also remain Canadian. WestJet and Swoop must also notify the CTA of any change to their Canadian status. Onex has also been directed by the CTA to provide copies of any document, previously submitted as draft, in their final executed form within 60 days of the completed transaction.

Uber and Hyundai announce aerial ridesharing partnership Uber and Hyundai Motor Company have formed a partnership to develop Uber Air Taxis for a future aerial rideshare network and have unveiled a new full-scale aircraft concept. Hyundai is the first automotive company to join the Uber Elevate initiative, bringing automotive-scale manufacturing capability and a track record of mass-producing electric vehicles. In this partnership, Hyundai will produce and deploy the air vehicles and Uber will provide airspace support services, connections to ground transportation and customer interfaces through an aerial rideshare network. Both parties are collaborating on infrastructure concepts to support take-off and landing for this new class of vehicles. “We believe Hyundai has the potential to build Uber Air vehicles at rates unseen in the current aerospace industry, producing high quality, reliable aircraft at high volumes to drive down passenger costs per trip,” said Eric Allison, head of Uber Elevate. “Combining Hyundai’s manufacturing muscle with Uber’s technology platform represents a giant leap forward for launching a vibrant air taxi network in the coming years.” The Hyundai air vehicle concept was created in part through Uber’s open design process, a NASA-inspired approach that jump-starts innovation by publicly releasing vehicle design concepts so any company can use them to innovate their air taxi models and engineering technologies. • As a result, Hyundai’s S-A1 concept model reflects previous electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) designs released by Uber Elevate in the following ways: • It is designed for a cruising speed up to 290 kilometres per hour at a cruising altitude of approximately 300 to 600 metres above ground and to fly distances up to 100 kilometres. • It will be 100 per cent electric, utilizing distributed electric propulsion that will require about five to seven minutes for recharging during peak hours. • Hyundai’s electric aircraft utilizes distributed electric propulsion, powering multiple rotors and propellers around the airframe to increase safety by decreasing any single point of failure. Having several, smaller rotors also reduces noise relative to large rotor helicopters with combustion engines, which is very important to cities. • The model is designed to take off vertically, transition to wing-

borne lift in cruise and then transition back to vertical flight to land. • Initially, the Hyundai vehicle will be piloted, but over time they will become autonomous. • The cabin is designed with four passenger seats, allowing riders to board and disembark easily, with enough space for a personal bag or backpack. “Our vision of Urban Air

Mobility will transform the concept of urban transportation,” said Jaiwon Shin, executive vice president and Head of Hyundai’s Urban Air Mobility (UAM) Division. “We expect UAM to vitalize urban communities and provide more quality time to people. We are confident that Uber Elevate is the right partner to make this innovative product readily available to as many customers as possible.”

Air Canada’s Rouge fleet began operation in 2013 and consists of Airbus 319, 320, 321 and Boeing 767 aircraft.

The entire Air Canada Rouge fleet of 65 aircraft that fly globally and across North America is now equipped with Wi-Fi high-speed satellite-based connectivity. Air Canada Rouge passengers can choose from a selection of Wi-Fi packages to suit their requirements simply by connect-

ing to the airline’s Wi-Fi network onboard and following the instructions or purchasing a pass or plan before boarding. In addition to the full Air Canada Rouge fleet, satellitebased Wi-Fi is already available on all Air Canada Boeing 777s and most Boeing 787s and Airbus A330s, with the remain-

der to be completed early this year. Air Canada Wi-Fi connectivity is also available across the carrier’s entire mainline narrow body fleet and the Air Canada Express Embraer 175 and Bombardier CRJ-900 fleets, as well as the airline’s new Airbus A220 fleet.

Air Transat celebrates inaugural flight from YVR to two Costa Rican cities Travel Talk

2019, a y We should all be very proud of YVR’s achievements this past year. B.C.’s airport continued to succeed—connecting more people and products to the world, providing more social and economic benefits for the region and leading the aviation industry in sustainability. Without a doubt, 2019 was testament to the strength of our

Last month, Air Transat inaugurated a service between Vancouver and Costa Rica, consisting of a direct flight to San José and a second flight segment to Liberia, located 215 kilometres northwest of San José. The route is available twice weekly, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, until April 18, 2020. To mark the occasion, the team at YVR served beverages and sweet treats to passengers before they boarded Air Transat’s first-ever flight TS796. “We are proud to be adding these new destinations to our winter 2019–2020 program and in the process enhancing service out of Vancouver,” said Jean-François Lemay, president-general manager of Air Transat. “These new routes make it easier than ever for travellers to explore Costa Rica, an increasingly popular tourist destination that has so much to offer in the way of rich culture and majestic scenery.”

After its initial stop in San José, the aircraft landed at Daniel-Oduber-Quirós International Airport in Liberia to a traditional water cannon salute. Disembarking passengers watched a ribbon-cutting celebration and enjoyed snacks in the company of César Jaramillo, CEO of the airport. “We are excited to see the fruits of our ongoing efforts in conjunction with government authorities to attract new flights and airlines,” said Jaramillo. “The new route operated by Air Transat provides direct service to and from Vancouver but also connections to the rest of Canada. This is a very important market for achieving our goal of maintaining growth in tourist arrivals from the northern part of the continent.” Air Transat flights to Costa Rica will be operated using the airline’s new A321neoLR. We’re opening more than 20 new food and beverage concepts over the next two years as part of an enhanced food and beverage program. In 2019, we celebrated the opening of Urban Crave, illy Caffè, Joe and the Juice and Sal y Limon. Stay tuned for more great offerings in 2020!

YVR celebrated decades of success with a historic Skytrax win for the 10th consecutive year. BorderXpress kiosks, a first at YVR.

We once again received the Skytrax award for Best Airport in North America—for a record 10 years in a row!

We recently announced that our BorderXpress kiosks are now being used at the NEXUS lines. This is a big win for us as it makes YVR the first Canadian airport to offer NEXUS members a more seamless border clearance process.

Air Canada’s begins new service from YVR to Auckland.

Thanks to our airline partners, we will surpass a record 26-million passengers in 2019. We also welcomed several new services from Air Transat and WestJet and, recently, we welcomed Air Canada’s new service to Auckland, a great destination that will further establish YVR as a Trans-Pacific hub.

YVR’s bioport study is an industry-led project to increase the supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

We strive to be a leader in environmental management and sustainability and in 2019 we made great progress, having been selected as the Canadian airport to participate in a bioport feasibility study with industryleading partners.

We successfully completed year 2 of the historic, 30-year Musqueam Indian Band-YVR Airport Sustainability & Friendship Agreement. In 2019, we provided 13 scholarships to Musqueam students and we saw more than 90 Musqueam members—10 per cent of the Musqueam Band population—working at YVR.

We continued to deliver exceptional customer care to everyone, with new accessible features such as video interpretation, a nursing pod, free use of the Aira app for the blind or those with low vision, and more. And we hosted our first Open House and Inclusive Hiring Fair to support accessibility. I look forward to hosting many more.

Air Canada’s new Airbus A220-300, a North American first

Hope Air has a simple mission: To provide free flights for Canadians who are in financial need and must travel to healthcare. Donate. Volunteer. Organize. Ask us how. We need your help.

Air Canada’s first A220-300, which enters service this month, will allow the airline to open routes that were previously not feasible.

Air Canada has taken delivery of its first A220-300, designed, built and delivered from the Mirabel A220 programme facilities in Canada. The first aircraft out of an order of 45 will enter service

this month, making Air Canada the first airline to operate the A220-300 in North America. Air Canada currently operates a fleet of 116 Airbus aircraft. The A220 is the only aircraft purpose-built for the 100-150

seat market. It combines state-ofthe-art aerodynamics, advanced materials and Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation PW1500Ggeared turbofan engines to offer at least 20 per cent lower fuel burn per seat, compared to pre-

vious generation aircraft, and a reduced noise footprint. Fully in line with Air Canada’s plan to become a sustainable airline, the A220 is the most eco-friendly aircraft in its category.

Boeing suspends 737 MAX production, replaces CEO Boeing has announced that it is suspending production of its Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, starting this month. The decision is driven by several factors, including the extension of certification into 2020, the uncertainty about the timing and conditions of return to service, global training approvals and the importance of ensuring that Boeing can prioritize the delivery of stored aircraft. Throughout the grounding of the 737 MAX—now hitting the nine-month mark—Boeing has

Artistic rendering of the Canada Line’s Lansdowne Station circa. 2005. (TransLink).

A new Canada Line station is coming to Richmond following the transfer of $28 million in developer-supported funds from the City of Richmond to TransLink. The long-envisioned Capstan Station will be built in the area of No. 3 Road and Capstan Way in Richmond, between the existing Bridgeport and Aberdeen stations. Its construction results from a 2012 agreement that would see a new station added to the Canada Line to support growing development in the area once funds were raised. “This is an excellent example of how the City of Richmond works with developers and partners such as TransLink to build strong communities,” said City of Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “Parks, trails, recreation facilities and even green spaces are often created by developers who are building higher density communities in urban areas. Now, through a shared vision and this precedent-setting agreement, we have an important transit location as well.” With more than 6,000 residen-

tial units being built in and around the Capstan Village area, the community will benefit enormously from the transit access the new Canada Line station will bring, as it will provide an accessible, sustainable mode of travel to support urban lifestyles. “The Canada Line has been a tremendous success story for this region, with around 90,000 people now using the system each weekday,” said TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond. “Strong ridership growth has spurred on an astonishing amount of property development, so partnering with the City of Richmond and leveraging developer dollars to help fund a new station is an important model for transit infrastructure enhancements.” Work to explore concept design options for the station commenced in 2017 with the transfer of $1.1 million from the City of Richmond to TransLink. Further work will now be undertaken to finalize the station design. The project is expected to be complete mid-2022.

LYDIA MORRISON Answer:

Fokker 50

4760 Inglis Drive, Richmond, BC Send your answer: Email joanbelgrave@hotmail.com; Mail to: #181-4438 West 10th Avenue Vancouver, BC V6R 4R8 A draw will be made from all correct entries received by January 31, 2020. The winner’s name will be published in the February 2020 edition of SkyTalk and at skytalkonline.com.

The Fokker 50 was developed during the early 1980s following a decline in the sales of the company’s earlier F27 Friendship. It was decided that the new airliner would be a derivative of its predecessor, sharing much of its airframe and design features, while incorporating new advances and several improvements, such as the adoption of Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127B turboprop engines.

Change Canada for 2017, Honda Canada’s vehicle fleet had the best overall fuel economy in the industry and emitted less CO2 than the average among internal combustion engine manufacturers. As society moves towards a

more electrified future, Honda aims to electrify two-thirds of its global auto sales by 2030. To achieve those targets, the company is taking a measured approach to transitioning from producing mainly internal combustion engines to vehicles

equipped with gasoline-hybrid powertrains. More information on CO2, its relationship to vehicles sold in Canada and what Honda Canada is doing to educate and inform consumers can be found here.
