February 5, 2020
The safety and security of our passengers, employees and all airport visitors is our top priority. We are aware of increasing concerns around coronavirus and we wanted to provide an update on the measures underway here at YVR. We are working very closely with the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), the lead agency on coronavirus response in Canada and the body responsible for all decisions about health-related screening of passengers at Canada’s ports of entry, including YVR. PHAC has implemented a number of new measures at YVR over the last several weeks in response to coronavirus. This includes new signage displayed in the international arrivals area reminding travellers to inform a border service officer if they are experiencing flu-like symptoms. A new health-screening question has been added to the electronic border kiosks, requiring travellers to declare if they have visited Hubei province in China over the last two weeks. PHAC has also stationed Quarantine Officers at YVR to complete health assessments on passengers exhibiting flu-like symptoms. As the airport operator, we have also implemented a number of preventative safeguards. We have placed additional hand sanitizer dispensers in high traffic areas, we have added signage on effective preventative measures in washrooms and key locations throughout the terminal and we have increased cleaning procedures for the border kiosks, jet bridges, hand rails, washrooms and other high touch surfaces, with a focus on international arrivals. We would like to emphasize that PHAC continues to deem the risk to Canadians as low. Additionally, while the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Novel Coronavirus outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, WHO’s Director General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted his key concern is the outbreak spreading to countries with weak healthcare systems. We have full confidence in the Canadian healthcare system and the measures already underway to detect and combat coronavirus, including effective airport screening. WHO also noted they do not recommend any travel or trade restrictions at this time. As always, safety and security is our top priority and we will continue to work closely with PHAC and all our government partners to fully support them in any new public health measures at YVR to ensure the safety of the entire airport community. Finally, we would like to thank the amazing airport community, including the many public health officials, first responders, all frontline staff and everyone else involved in dealing with the response to coronavirus for the tremendous efforts underway to ensure public safety—both at YVR and beyond.
Thank you,
Robyn McVicker Vice President, Operations and Maintenance Vancouver Airport Authority

Change continues at YVR: February update Several key projects to enhance the airport experience continue at YVR. These projects are all possible due to YVR’s unique operating structure—a community-based organization that reinvests its profits into the airport and region. The multi-year expansion project currently underway will help YVR meet growing passenger demand and better connect British Columbians and local businesses to the world, while improving the airport experience for everyone. While much of the work is taking place airside, passengers can expect to see hoarding near the end of Pier D. This may include noisy work. Given that there are 24-hour operations in this part of the terminal, YVR understands that this could potentially be disruptive for those with flights at nearby gates. Travellers looking for somewhere quiet can find seating in the creek area, near the food court. In and around Sea Island Safety is a top priority at YVR. With several ongoing projects, customers are reminded to follow all signage, traffic delineators and flaggers in the construction areas. • Construction continues on YVR’s new Parkade and Central Utilities Building. This includes work around the old Value Lot off of Grant McConachie Way, as well as within the existing Parkade. There are various traffic control measures in place for cars
arriving and departing from the terminal near this site. • In the existing Parkade, customers will notice fencing, temporary pedestrian walkways and some stalls blocked. This work is for a number of upgrade projects including building new entry ramps as well as the installation of an automated parking guidance system. • As part of utilities work to connect the new geoexchange system to the terminal, there is a lane closed off directly outside the old Value Lot on Grant McConachie Way. Two lanes are maintained throughout for inbound traffic. • As part of this project, YVR is also installing district energy piping, which requires a full curbside closure of Level 1. Every effort is being made to reduce the impact of construction on tenants and passengers. Pedestrians will still be able to access the Parkade from the Domestic Terminal Building Level 1 through designated walking routes. • There are also several related projects near the site including: • A new crosswalk, which is now open outside of International Arrivals on Level 2. YVR’s high-tech snow-melting machines, fondly known as ‘hot tubs,’ can melt 20 truckloads of snow every hour.
The recent major snowfall at YVR was a real test of the YVR team’s snow preparedness. And while the winter wonderland is a nice change of pace for Vancouver, the safety and security of YVR’s travellers depend on the snow being managed efficiently and effectively. YVR takes winter operations very seriously, with planning and preparation starting as early as summer. The team works proactively to conduct training exercises, prepare specialized equipment and develop plans for the winter months. Throughout the year, YVR also works with a meteorologist who tracks weather trends and predictions, so we can get realtime information about when to expect the first flake to fall. And when the snow does fall, the team works closely with Aero Mag, who manages the deicing process for airplanes before takeoff. As a result of these combined efforts, when faced with severe weather conditions, YVR’s team is prepared to take action and ensure that operations continue to run safely and smoothly. Beyond this, YVR has also invested more than $75 million into the runway and taxiway snow removal fleet. This is a significant investment, allowing YVR to purchase 82 pieces of specialized equipment, including the recent addition of two combination units that plow, broom and spread chemical primary on taxiways. Some of my favourite trucks are the high-tech snow-melting machines, known as ‘hot tubs,’ that are each the size of a semitrailer and able to melt 20 truckloads of snow per hour. With this impressive fleet, YVR’s snow removal team can clear the equivalent of Granville Street, full width and full length, from the Fraser River to Burrard Inlet, in less than 15 minutes! As you can imagine, there are a lot of moving parts and teams involved in snow operations at the airport and managing the airfield during winter conditions is no simple feat.
From airside operations and ground handlers to airlines and the incredible employees and volunteers in the terminal, I’d like to give a big shout out to everyone who helped ensure the safety of our passengers this past month. To all the people who worked early hours and late nights, I thank you for your dedication and commitment to providing a top-notch experience to all who pass through YVR. And, lastly, but by no means least, to YVR’s passengers and airline partners for their patience and understanding.
Specialized equipment included in YVR’s runway and taxiway snow removal fleet: • Five OshKosh H-Series snow blowers with a combined capacity to blow close to 23,000 metric tons of snow as far as 46 metres every hour. • Four OshKosh P-Series/MB 4600 trucks, each capable of ploughing and sweeping a 7.3-metre wide path. • Three OshKosh H-Series sweeper with a 6.7-metre wide high-speed broom. • Three OshKosh P-Series trucks, each equipped with a 7.3-metre high-speed snow plough.
Ways to fight germs on an aircraft • Once you’re on the plane, use disinfecting wipes as an extra cleaner on hard surfaces—tray table (top and bottom), armrests, TV-screen remote, seat buckle and call buttons. The tray table is the most important—it tops the list for bacteria per square inch. • Turn on the overhead air vent, the cabin filters clean the air as it comes through. • If using the seatback pocket to place items, put them near the top rather than letting them slip all the way down. • Drink lots of water. Eight
ounces per hour is a good guideline. Staying hydrated not only serves as a defense against dry cabin air, but can ease jet lag and keep you healthier overall. • Adding moisture to your nose, e.g., a saline nasal spray and using eye drops to relieve dry eyes can help boost your body’s germ defenses. • When using the airplane bathroom, wash your hands thoroughly and use a paper towel to open the door. Don’t drink water from the sink or use it to brush your teeth.

Toyota is exploring a new flight path for mobility through a collaboration with aerospace company Joby Aviation (Joby). The collaboration reflects Toyota’s recognition of the longterm potential of the urban air mobility market. Joby is developing and commercializing all-electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, which combine elements of helicopters and small airplanes, offering benefits that include high reliability, zero emissions, fast flight speeds and quiet operations.
Along with an investment of $394-million, Toyota will share its expertise in manufacturing, quality and cost controls for the development and production of Joby’s aircraft. Both companies believe that leveraging synergies with automobile technologies, as well as integrating best practices from the Toyota Production System, will help facilitate the efficient mass production of these aircraft. “Air transportation has been a long-term goal for Toyota and while we continue our work in the automobile business,

this agreement sets our sights to the sky,” said Toyota Motor Corporation president and CEO Akio Toyoda. It is anticipated that eVTOLs will help to create new mobility services with the potential to help alleviate persistent mobility challenges. Those challenges include traffic congestion in urban areas, increased environmental burden and the lack of transportation in underpopulated areas, among others. More details of the prototype aircraft and production plans will be announced at a later date.

Airbus’ E-Fan became the world’s first all-electric, two-engine aircraft to cross the English Channel on July 10, 2015.
Airbus’ E-Fan X is the aerospace manufacturer’s flagship hybrid-electric aircraft. But its predecessor, the all-electric twin-propeller aircraft E-Fan 1.0, can be credited for playing a key role in laying the groundwork for the next generation of zero-emission aircraft technology. On July 9, 2015, the world of aviation witnessed a milestone. At the Lydd Airport on the southeast coast of England, a twinpropeller aircraft embarked on a journey to the Calais-Dunkerque Airport—approximately 74 kilometres by air. Less than an hour later (36 minutes to be exact), the aircraft—known as E-Fan—landed safely in Calais, France. The E-Fan was no ordinary aircraft: it was powered solely by

lithium-ion batteries. As a result, it became one of the first allelectric aircraft to successfully cross the English Channel. It also paved the way for the next generation of electric-powered and zero-emission aircraft technology at Airbus. The original E-Fan has now been retired and is currently on display at the Aeroscopia
Museum in Toulouse, France. It is thanks to the lessons learned from the E-Fan 1.0 project that the E-Fan X has emerged—a hybrid-electric aircraft demonstrator 30 times more powerful than its predecessor. It can be said that with the Airbus E-Fan X, zero-emission flight continues its upward trajectory.

Richmond Olympic Oval marks Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games anniversary
Photo: courtesy Richmond Olympic Oval.
A decade ago, the eyes of the world were on Richmond and the Richmond Olympic Oval as a Venue City and host venue for 12 medal events at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. As a community, British Columbians welcomed the world, sang the national anthem on the Canada Line with passion, carried the torch through Richmond and collectively ignited a flame of Canadian pride that continues. “In the 10 years since Canada proudly united wearing the maple leaf, the Richmond Olympic Oval has become a living legacy of the games,” said City of Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “During the Olympic Games, the Oval hosted 12 long track speed skating events and since then has become a true sport and fitness destination that is a lasting legacy for the Olympic Games, our country, and our community.” Today, the Richmond Olympic Oval features facilities for sports like basketball, climbing, volleyball, hockey, rowing, table tennis, hockey and more.
Athletes at every stage of their sport and fitness journey come to the Oval from across BC, Canada and around the world to learn, train, push their limits and exceed their goals. To celebrate this historic anniversary, the Richmond Olympic Oval is hosting a three-day celebration of all things sport and all things Winter Olympic Games from Friday, February 21 to Sunday, February 23. Activities will include public skating, admission to the Richmond Olympic Experience, Canada vs. USA Women’s Para Ice Hockey exhibition games, speed skating demonstrations, and autograph signings with Canadian Olympians. There will also be photo opportunities on the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Podium, complete with replica torch and medals, figure skating shows by Connaught Figure Skating Club, an activity area previewing the upcoming CARHA Hockey International World Cup Kids Zone, and much more. For more information, please visit richmondoval.ca/10years.
As the EV market continues to expand, the City of Richmond wants to support this growth by ensuring that new and existing charging stations are being used effectively. Currently, EV users often park their vehicle in EV spots without charging, or leave their vehicle parked long after their charge is complete, which limits access for others. As of March 1, 2020, the City is implementing measures to improve access by restricting use of EV charging stations to vehicles that are actively charging and through the introduction of hourly charging fees. By applying hourly fees, users will be encouraged to charge their vehicle and then move it to make room for other users. Non-electric vehicles will not be permitted to park in EV charging spaces and will be subject to fines. As of March 1, EV users will pay up to $2 per hour for the first two hours and up to $5 per hour thereafter at a Level 2 Charging Station. Those using a Level 3 DC Fast Charging Station will pay up to $8 per hour at 25-kW station or up to $16 per hour at a 50-kW station. Users will pay only for the time they are plugged in on a minute-by-minute basis. The fees, which were calculated on
