On August 2, Air Transat celebrated the launch of its brand-new direct service be tween Vancouver and Quebec City, becoming the first and only airline to operate this route. Flights will be offered once a week, on Mondays from Vancouver, and on Sundays from Quebec City, until October 25. “It was only natural for us to add this route to our summer schedule,” said Joseph Adamo, Transat’s chief sales and marketing officer. “As we predicted, travellers are showing a strong interest in domes-

Federal funding awarded to YVR for safety and climate-related projects The Government of Canada has confirmed new federal funding, processed through Transport Canada’s Airport Critical Infrastructure Program (ACIP), will be awarded to Vancouver International Airport (YVR) for essential airport safety and infrastructure projects. This funding comes at a pivotal time, as YVR prepares to welcome back travellers and help lead the region’s economic recovery. “Canada’s airports are major contributors to our economy and play a crucial role in sustaining the social

YVR celebrates its first 90 years On July 22, 1931, when the Vancouver International Airport (then known as Sea Island Airport) officially opened its doors, the airport consisted of a single runway, a small wood-framed two-storey administration building, two concrete hangars, a floatplane harbour and a control tower. Today, YVR (the IATA abbreviation code for the airport) is Canada’s second busiest airport and a global industry leader—recognized for innovation and growth,

while serving the community and the economy that supports it. Over the past 90 years, YVR has achieved many milestones and as such, the Vancouver Airport Authority is pleased to share an interactive timeline on its website to bring the airport’s history to life. With more than 22-million Canadians fully vaccinated at the end of July and borders beginning to reopen, a new survey from leisure airline Sunwing has revealed that more than half (58 per cent) of Canadians plan on returning to travel in the next 12 months, and more than two-thirds (68 per cent) are interested in an all-inclusive vacation. What’s more, according to the research, 57 per cent of Canadians with at least one dose of the vaccine intend on travelling this upcoming holiday season. Residents of British Columbia are significantly more likely to be planning leisure travel this holiday season, with 71 per cent indicating they would be travelling this winter. The survey was conducted by Sunwing among members of the Angus Reid Forum between July 19-20, 2021, with a representative sample of 1,533 Canadians, in both English and French. For comparison purposes,
a sample of this size would yield a margin of error of +/- 2.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20. The survey also uncovered a growing interest in group bookings, with younger travellers especially eager to vacation as a group— almost 40 per cent of respondents aged 18-34 indicated they would be travelling with friends on their next getaway. In addition, more than one-third (38 per cent) of respondents who plan on travelling in the next 12 months indicated an interest in vacationing with family members, while nearly three-quarters (71 per cent) expressed an intent to travel with their partner or significant other. Sunwing, which offers flights to popular sun destinations across the U.S., Caribbean, Mexico and Central America, resumed flights to select destinations on July 30, 2021. Amazon’s Prime Air lands at YVR Spotted at YVR, Amazon’s Prime Air cargo airline, which operates exclusively to transport Amazon’s packages. Prime Air is a critical part of Amazon’s strategy to meet one- and two-day delivery targets. In January 2021, Amazon purchased 11 used Boeing 767-300 jets from Delta and WestJet, which are expected to be in service by the end of 2022. Some analysts have dismissed Amazon as a potential competitor to UPS and FedEx since its current cargo fleet of approximately 74 aircraft is far smaller than FedEx, which has 679 planes, and UPS, which has 572 owned, leased or chartered aircraft.

IATA’s airline statistics confirm 2020 was worst year The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released its IATA World Air Transport Statistics (WATS) publication, with performance figures for 2020 demonstrating the devastating effects of the COVID-19 crisis on global air transport during that year. “[The year] 2020 was a year that we’d all like to forget.” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s director
general. “But analyzing the performance statistics for the year reveals an amazing story of perseverance. At the depth of the crisis in April 2020, 66 per cent of the world’s commercial air transport fleet was grounded as governments closed borders or imposed strict quarantines. A million jobs disappeared. And industry losses for the year totalled $126 billion. Many governments
recognized aviation’s critical contributions and provided financial lifelines and other forms of support. But it was the rapid actions by airlines and the commitment of our people that saw the airline industry through the most difficult year in its history.” Some statistics from the IATA report: • 1.8 billion passengers flew in 2020, a decrease of 60.2

demand (RPKs) dropped by 48.8 per cent compared to 2019 • Air connectivity declined by more than half in 2020, with the number of routes connecting airports falling dramatically at the outset of the crisis, and was down more than 60 per cent year-on-year in April 2020 • Total industry passenger revenues fell by 69 per cent to $189 billion in 2020, and net losses were $126.4 billion in total The decline in air passengers transported in 2020 was the largest recorded since global RPKs started being tracked around 1950. Cargo Air freight was the bright spot in air transport for 2020, as the market adapted to keep goods moving—including vaccines, personal protective equipment (PPE) and vital medical supplies—despite the massive drop in capacity from the bellies of passenger aircraft. Industry-wide available cargo tonne-kilometres fell 21.4 per cent year-on-year in 2020, leading to a capacity crunch and the industry-wide cargo load factor up 7.0 percentage points to 53.8. the IATA series since starting in 1990. By the end of 2020, industry-wide cargo tonne-kilometres (CTKs) had returned close to pre-crisis values. However, the yearly decline in cargo demand (CTKs) was still the largest since the Global Financial Crisis in 2009, at a sizeable 9.7 per cent year-on-year in 2020.

Volocopter’s eVTOL takes to the Oshkosh skies
Eviation’s all-electric Alice aircraft.
DHL Express has ordered 12 fully electric Alice eCargo planes from Eviation, the Seattle-areabased global manufacturer of all-electric aircraft. The Eviation Alice electric plane can carry up to 1,133 kilograms at a top speed of 400 kilometres per hour and can fly 800 kilometres on a single charge. DHL’s plans are to set up an unparalleled electric express network and make a pioneering step into a sustainable avia-
tion future. The aircraft will be used for transporting packages from major air hubs to smaller markets. “We strongly believe in the zero-emission future of logistics,” said John Pearson, CEO of DHL Express. “Together, we are venturing into a new decade of sustainable aviation.” Eviation, owned by Singapore’s Clermont Group, expects to deliver the Alice electric aircraft to DHL Express in 2024.

Volocopter, a pioneer of urban air mobility (UAM), flew a fully electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft at the 2021 Experimental Aircraft Association’s (EAA) AirVenture Oshkosh in Wisconsin. The four-minute Volocopter 2X flight was the first ever, public-crewed test flight of a fully electric vertical eVTOL air taxi in the U.S. The flight marked a key milestone in Volocopter’s plan to raise awareness of air taxis and was
critical to the long-term success of delivering advanced air mobility (AAM) and urban air mobility (UAM) solutions. “We can talk about our lead in certification, low noise emissions, and global partnerships all we want, but nothing shows just how close we are to launch UAM as a service as does flying an air taxi in front of crowds and inviting people to sit in our aircraft,” said Florian Reuter, CEO, Volocopter. “Air taxis are coming, and we are working to bring electric flights to
cities around the globe in the next two to three years.” Volocopter is the only eVTOL developer with a family of electric aircraft for passengers and goods. This aircraft family includes aircraft for both long and short distances within cities and beyond (VoloCity and VoloConnect air taxis and VoloDrone heavy-lift drone). “Oshkosh is a haven for enthusiasts and experts to embrace the pioneering spirit of aviation, and [the] Volocopter flight is one for
the history books,” said Rick Larsen, EAA vice president of communities and member programming. “This is the spirit of Oshkosh giving our visitors the chance to experience real pioneers, who will change aviation for good, right here.” Both traditional aerospace companies and new start-ups are working on the production of eVTOL aircraft. These aircraft could be used to move passengers and cargo around and between cities.

Iskwew Air announces scheduled service between Qualicum Beach Airport and YVR Iskwew (pronounced Isskway-yo) Air has announced its first scheduled service between Qualicum Beach Airport and Vancouver International Airport (YVR). The decision to begin flights to Qualicum was made after overwhelming support was received from residents of Qualicum Beach, Qualicum First Nation and the surrounding area, who were consulted through surveys and a community engagement session to hear how the airline could serve the community.
“The town has been working diligently to provide regular airline service to and from Qualicum Beach and we are pleased that Iskwew Air will begin flying out of the Qualicum Beach Airport,” said Mayor Brian Wiese. “They will be a valuable addition to our town.” Indigenous Tourism BC, through a partnership with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport, is delivering $5 million in grants to 140 Indigenous tourism businesses through the BC Tourism
Indigenous Recovery Fund. Iskwew Air is using its grant to launch the Qualicum Beach service. “Indigenous Tourism BC [ITBC] congratulates Iskwew Air on their new scheduled services between YVR and Qualicum Beach,” said Paula Amos, chief marketing & development officer ITBC. “We are proud to see our Indigenous tourism businesses, including Iskwew Air, recover from COVID-19 with adapted strategies to deliver exceptional Indigenous tourism experiences
to domestic travellers and soon international travellers.” Iskwew Air was founded by Teara Fraser, a Métis who was born in Hay River, N.W.T. and whose Métis family comes from Fort Chipewyan, Alta., a fly-in only community. On July 12, Central Mountain Air (CMA) launched its first flight from Campbell River to Vancouver, after the airline had announced restored connectivity for this route. Flights will be offered on Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday, and will consist of eight round-trip flights per week. CMA has also begun new service from and to Prince George, offering two roundtrip flights per week. “We are excited to grow and develop this market,” said Bob Cummings, CEO Central

Pacific Coastal Airlines resumes Vancouver–Bella Bella service Starting August 10, Pacific Coastal Airlines resumes nonstop service between Vancouver International Airport South Terminal (YVR) and Bella Bella Airport (ZEL). “Over the past 16 months we have been working closely with the Heiltsuk Nation, operating charter flights to support their essential service travel requirements,” said Quentin Smith, president Pacific Coastal Airlines. “I am excited that we have received approval from the Heiltsuk Nation to resume our scheduled flight service and we are looking forward to supporting the commu-
nity of Bella Bella again.” Non-stop flight service between Vancouver and Bella Bella will be offered six days a week via a Beechcraft 1900D aircraft. The 1900D offers comfortable seating, 6-foot cabin height, and generous cargo capacity. “The pandemic has seen many travel restrictions in place for our health and safety, we are pleased to see commercial flight services back to our community, now that it is safe,” said Chief Marilyn Slett, Heiltsuk Nation. Jaguar Land Rover is developing a prototype hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) based on the new Land Rover Defender, with testing scheduled to begin towards the end of 2021 in the UK to verify key attributes, such as off-road capability and fuel consumption. The FCEV concept is part of Jaguar Land Rover’s aim to achieve zero tailpipe emissions by 2036, and net zero carbon emissions across its supply chain, products and operations by 2039, in line with its Reimagine strategy. FCEVs, which generate electricity from hydrogen to power an electric motor, are complimentary to battery electric vehicles (BEVs) on the journey to net zero vehicle emissions.

City of Richmond participates in E-scooter pilot project
Richmond City Council endorsed participation in the Province of BC’s active transportation electric kick scooter (e-scooter) three-year pilot project on May 25, 2021. Following provincial approval in July, the City of Richmond is now a participating community in the provincial program. The e-scooter pilot project supports a new low carbon mobility option for Richmond residents, work force, students and visitors, and encourages transit use with a solution for the first and last mile trip. “The goal of bringing e-scooters to Richmond is to trial a safe, convenient and enjoyable personal mobility option that reduces private automobile use, and promotes active transportation and transit use,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “Through monitoring and evaluation, the pilot project is an opportunity to understand the safety of e-scooters, impacts on the public realm, potential for travel mode shift, and community perceptions that in time, will help inform future active transportation initiatives.” The pilot project allows the use of e-scooters within the City of Richmond in accordance with the provincial regulations and Richmond bylaws, which designate locations where the devices may be operated and at what speeds. As e-scooters are relatively new transportation devices, a measured approach of permitting where e-scooters can operate and their maximum speeds during the
pilot project will enable their safe introduction to riders and those who share the road and pathways with e-scooters. Specific rules apply as to where and how fast the e-scooters can operate on public roadways and pathways. Within Richmond, e-scooters are permitted to operate only on: • designated cycling facilities • local streets defined as a street without lane lines or a directional dividing line with a speed limit of 50 km/h or less • streets with a directional dividing line and a maximum speed of 30 km per hour • off-street paved pathways next to the roadway or in parks that are signed or marked for shared use. Maximum speeds limits are in place and vary—on roadways it is 20 kilometres per hour and on shared pathways the maximum speed is 15 kilometres per hour. In the presence of pedestrians on a shared pathway, riders must slow to a walking speed. E-scooter riders must be a minimum of 16 years old, must wear a helmet, must not carry passengers, and must not ride on the sidewalk. Riders are not required to hold a driver’s licence. Additional “Shared Use” signage will be added to paved pathways (where required), to identify where e-scooters can operate. For more information, visit richmond.ca.

As an airline ground service provider, we must maintain our ground service equipment in good, reliable condition to meet the operational needs of our airline customers. We are seeking a Ground Service Equipment (GSE) Mechanic to perform regular maintenance and repairs on a wide range of vehicles and equipment in our organization. The position is based at the maintenance hangar, South Terminal close to the Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and will involve working collaboratively with our airport teams and station vendors, under the direction of the Base Manager, to perform a variety of tasks throughout our network to ensure that ground service equipment is kept in optimal condition. With safety and quality of workmanship always considered a priority. Job Responsibilities: • Source outside vendors to maintain equipment at all RS and Associates stations, coordinate repair and preventative maintenance of equipment while maintaining a good working relationship with our vendors. • Advise manager on all work performed, general vehicle condition, equipment malfunctions and future repair requirements. • Complete and maintain technical reports for work performed on ground service equipment. • Inspect, diagnose, repair and service mechanical, electrical and electronic systems and components of all RS and Associates ground service equipment. • Maintain tools and support equipment in safe and operational working conditions. • Maintain a complete inventory of all parts and tooling that are that are used for the ground service equipment by utilizing computer tracking system. • Able to work within the procurement policy to purchased items for RS and Associates ground service equipment. • Vehicles may consist of tugs, forklifts, pay loaders, fuel trucks and other larger airport vehicles. • Inspects parts and/or motor vehicles to identify defective or broken parts. • Repairs diesel engines, hydraulic, electric, and mechanical systems. • Keep work areas clean and free of hazards. • Maintain the highest levels of standards, safety and security always. • Travel within the RS and Associates network to support our station ground service equipment when required. • Other duties as assigned. We are currently looking to find the right person to join our team as the United Ramp Inc., Prince Rupert Airport Base Operations Manager. YOUR ROLE: As a people leader, the URI Operations Manager directs all facets of station operations and station employees and establishes priorities of all customer-service functions, including ticketing, baggage handling, cargo operations (weight and balance), passenger security and reservations in a manner that ensures compliance with company service standards. Additionally, you will be expected to manage human resources, communicate priorities, motivate staff and create an environment that promotes teamwork. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: • Lead team and establishes priorities of all customer-service functions at the station, including ticketing, baggage handling, cargo operations (weight and balance), passenger security and reservations, in a manner that ensures compliance with customer & company service standards • Manage work group to meet pre-established on-time goals and minimum accepted performance goals • Manage all vendors, shareholders, and all related Prince Rupert contracts • Manage operations schedules, staffing schedules & all necessary training, to ensure exceptional service is provided for each customer’s needs • Implement customer service procedural process changes for each client’s service requirements • Represent United Ramp in the community through public relations activities • Oversee all station and customer resources, such as facilities, equipment & supplies • Develop people through effective performance management & ongoing feedback—focusing on delegation for stretch assignments, team growth & development, and time management • Supervise labour contracts & review & relay all schedule changes to all departments • Measure and report daily performance to the Director. • Ensure compliance with company policies and all federal, provincial, and local airport authorities’ regulations • Ensure all administrative reports, payroll and shift scheduling is kept current and sent in within the required timelines • Manage and approve Payables, ensure Receivables’ reports are fully completed and all financial documents are sent in as they occur QUALIFICATIONS: • A minimum of 5 years experience in guest services preferred • A minimum of 2 years leadership or management experience • Bachelor’s degree, or an additional two years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree, an asset • Budget management experience an asset • Analytical, with strong decision-making skills and the ability to problem-solve • Willingness and ability to instruct and train staff • Detailed oriented and highly organized, with ability to multi-task and work independently with limited guidance in a fast-paced environment • Proven ability to motivate employees and improve and enhance group dynamics • Proven ability to use tact in communicating with others and able to constructively resolve problems • Strong communication (e.g., verbal, written, and listening) and presentation skills • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) • High school diploma or equivalent is required • Able to successfully pass a Criminal Records Check • Experience in station operations, passenger service, cargo handling, or ground operations • Knowledge of scheduling shift work, administering bargaining unit employees and budget controls • Experience managing large work groups • Knowledge of Air Canada System Regulations and FAA policies and procedures • Job-specific Leadership Expectations • Embody the company’s values: to own safety, do the right thing, be kind-hearted, deliver performance and be remarkable.
