At YVR, we are powered by our vision to operate a world class, sustainable airport. As we work to realize our vision, we are looking ahead with an ambitious new plan to continue to reduce our impact on the environment. Learn more at yvr.ca/environment
OUR ENVIRONMENTAL JOURNEY As a leader in environmental stewardship, we develop an Environmental Management Plan every five years to outline our environmental priorities. We are excited to introduce our 2020 – 2024 Environmental Management Plan (EMP), which sets ambitious targets for the organization over for the next five years in each of our four focus areas:
CARBON REDUCTION WASTE REDUCTION
WATER CONSERVATION ECOSYSTEM HEALTH
With our previous 2015 – 2019 EMP, we set a foundation for the organization’s environmental efforts by identifying four strategic focus areas and corresponding goals that aligned with our mission, vision and values. We are pleased to report that we made positive progress under each focus area, including: • Reducing our greenhouse gas emissions every year since 2012, effectively decreasing emissions by 34 per cent per passenger, • Surpassing our 50 per cent waste diversion target (we’re now at 54 per cent!),
Our new plan builds on these achievements and introduces a set of targets that will help further reduce our impact on the environment—we are committed to becoming carbon neutral this year and achieving net zero emissions by 2050, improving water conservation by 50 per cent per passenger by 2024, and diverting 60 per cent of airport waste from landfill. We will continue to work with our Sea Island business partners, supporting them with their environmental goals through our Project Green YVR initiatives. We will also continue to work with our airline partners to advance efficiencies in aircraft movement on the ground and in the air, and with industry and government to increase the use of sustainable aviation fuel in BC. YVR is a place where people begin journeys of discovery and adventure. Our EMP is also a journey and requires action and involvement from everyone. Your everyday choices—what you buy, how you dispose of items and how you move around—will help us achieve our targets. A giant thank you to our employees, passengers and the surrounding business community for contributing to the ongoing success of our EMP.
• Achieving a 39 per cent reduction in water use per passenger, and
Together, we will address today’s environmental challenges while looking ahead with purpose to care for our natural resources, enabling us to connect British Columbia proudly to the world for generations to come.
• Becoming the world’s first airport to achieve Salmon-Safe certification.
I invite you to learn more about our plan at yvr.ca/environment. Thank you,

Is Turkey, with its cultural connections to the ancient Greek, Persian, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires, on your bucket list? If so, it will become much more accessible to fly to its capital city from Vancouver, thanks to a Turkish Airlines’ announcement that the airline will begin direct service from YVR to Istanbul Airport (IST). Set to start on June 9, 2020, the thrice-weekly service will depart YVR on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Established in 1933, Turkish Airlines, which currently flies to more than 300 destinations with its fleet of more than 350 aircraft, has earned the title of airline that flies to the most countries in the world.
Turkish Airlines Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft will be flown on the new YVR to Istanbul Airport (IST) route. (Left) In 2019, Turkish Airlines unveiled new flagred and anthracite greycoloured cabin uniforms, which were inspired by the many classical details in Turkish culture, such as the currents of the Bosphorus strait, artisanal glassware, ceramics and calligraphy.
The Vancouver-Istanbul route will be operated using a Boeing 787-9 with a seat configuration of 30 Business class and 270 Economy class seats. For more information and to book online, please visit turkishairlines.com.

Little Wings Daycare, which has been part of the Sea Island community for nearly 30 years and plays an important role in the lives of many residents and employees, has reopened at a new location. Little Wings Day Care Centre Society, which opened in November 1991 as an infant/toddler centre, was created as an initiative of the maintenance and engineering department of Canadian Airlines International. The purpose of Little Wings Daycare was to develop and deliver a Richmond-based, self-sustaining, integrated continuum of child-care services that reflected family and community needs. After its old lease ended in 2019, the costs associated with purchasing and retrofitting suitable space, moving and securing playgrounds and setting-up new infrastructure extended well beyond Little Wings capacity as a non-profit society to fund on its own. YVR, along with an army of companies and volunteer

that already work in the Sea Island community. At the grand reopening of Little Wings, special guests Minister Katrina Chen, Teresa Wat (MLA, Richmond North Centre), Richmond City councillors Kelly

Change is in the air at YVR: March update There are several key projects currently taking place at YVR that are designed to enhance the airport experience. These projects are all possible due to Vancouver Airport Authority’s unique operating structure—a community-based organization that reinvests its profits into the airport and the B.C. region. The multi-year expansion projects currently underway will help YVR meet growing passenger demand and better connect British Columbians and local businesses to the world, while improving the airport experience for everyone. Terminal • Construction continues near Transborder check-in to make several enhancements to the area. Work includes replacing the check-in kiosks with the newest models, movement of a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) unit, relocating the information counter and some other minor updates. • In December 2019, a new holdroom for remote stand operations (RSO) opened in the Transborder terminal. The holdroom includes four new bus positions and gate counters. Work is still under-
way on this project and once complete, it will connect passengers from Level 3 to the Level 2 remote stand operations (RSO) facility. This work includes the addition of new elevators and escalators. • Work continues on an upgrade project to the ceiling pre-security, near the A/B screening point. As part of the construction, there will be scaffolding in the area. • As construction continues on a number of YVR’s new food and beverage and retail options, passengers can expect to see various hoarding around the terminal. • As part of the International Pier D expansion project, various work is taking place. While much of the work is taking place airside, passengers can expect to see hoarding near the end of Pier D. This may include noisy work, given that there are 24-hour operations in this part of the terminal. This could potentially be disruptive for those with flights at nearby gates. If you are looking for somewhere quiet, you can find seating in the creek area, near the food court.
In and around Sea Island • Safety is a top priority at YVR. With a large number of ongoing projects, customers are reminded to follow all signage, traffic delineators and flaggers in construction areas. • Construction is continuing on YVR’s new parkade and Central Utilities Building. This includes construction in what was the old Value Lot off Grant McConachie Way, as well as within the existing parkade. There are various traffic control measures in place for cars arriving and departing from the terminal near this site. o In the existing parkade, customers will notice fencing, temporary pedestrian walkways and some blocked parking stalls. This is to accommodate construction of new entry ramps and the installation of an automated parking guidance system. o As part of utilities work to connect the new heating and cooling geoexchange system to the terminal, there is a lane closed off directly outside the old Value Lot on Grant McConachie Way.
THE FLIGHT IS ONE-STOP THE AWE IS NON-STOP PERU
CLOSER THAN EVER VIA MEXICO CITY

o Underground piping, which requires a full curbside closure of Level 1, is also being installed. Every effort is being made to reduce the impact of construction on tenants and passengers. Pedestrians are still able to access the parkade from the Domestic Terminal Building Level 1 through designated walking routes. o As part of this project, there is also work taking place outside International Arrivals. Please follow all signage and traffic delineators in the area.
• YVR is planning to redevelop a parcel of land on airport property in the Templeton area, adjacent to the Burkeville residential neighbourhood. In preparation for future development, YVR is installing utilities, building roads, clearing the site and building a linear greenspace for community use. It is anticipated that construction of the next phase of work will commence mid-March 2020 and continue through the end of this year. Cycling and pedestrian access in the area will be detoured off Templeton Street
Construction for a new multi-use pathway. • The bypass road around YVR’s Value Long-Term lot is closed until approximately mid-March 2020. Access to the Value Long Term lot is maintained via Grant McConachie Way. Detours will be put in place for any cycling routes impacted by this work. Please follow all signage in the area. This work is part of the Vancouver Airport Fuel Facilities Corporation (VAFFC) Fuel Delivery Project. For more information, visit yvr.ca/construction.

This year, marks 10 years since YVR was an Official Supplier for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games—an exciting time for the entire airport community. During the two-month-long games period, YVR welcomed a total of 1.3-million athletes, VIPs, media and airport travellers. And, although not built specifically for the Olympic Games, the addition of the Canada Line and the Domestic Terminal’s expanded C-Pier were integral to delivering a great airport experience. Here are some of the champion moments for YVR: Welcoming the world In 2010, YVR worked with its partner airlines and businesses to rally around a common goal: the delivery of a gold-standard airport experience during the Olympic Games. Not only did the Airport Authority conduct customer-care training for more than 3,000 employees and volunteers to “get their game faces on,” it also ensured maximum efficiency in terminal facilities to ensure a smooth and fun travel experience. Terminal experience The International Arrivals hall became a virtual United Nations of flags and banners, which greeted teams from around the world as they emerged from the customs hall, while enthusiastic media and fans eagerly sought photos and autographs. Sixty-five gates and 160 shops and services were available to serve travellers’ needs, including six dedicated Olympic stores. To keep Olympic spirits high and ensure a stress-free journey home at the end of the games, YVR introduced in-terminal live music and entertainment that included mascots, living statues, and photo ops.
The entertainment was so well received that this program still exists to enhance the interminal experience for passengers and make travelling through YVR even more enjoyable. Record-breaking stats During the Games, the entire airport community was swept up by Olympic fever, with excite-

Coronavirus travel advice Coronaviruses (also called COVID-19 or 2019nCoV) are a large family of viruses that cause respiratory illnesses. Some coronaviruses can cause no or mild illness like the common cold, but other coronaviruses can cause severe illness, like Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV). Available information indicates that older people and those with a weakened immune system or underlying medical conditions are at a higher risk of developing severe disease. Some human coronaviruses spread easily between people, while others do not. There are no specific treatments for illnesses caused by human coronaviruses. Most people with common human coronavirus illnesses will recover on their own. The Public Health Agency of Canada is actively monitoring the situation and working with the WHO and other international partners to gather additional information. In the meantime, the Canadian Government has issued the following precautionary recommendations for travellers. During your trip: • Avoid spending time in large crowds or crowded areas • Avoid contact with sick people, especially if they have fever, cough, or difficulty breathing • Be aware of the local situation and follow local public health advice Wash your hands: • Wash your hands often with soap under warm running water for at least 20 seconds • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer only if soap and water are not available. It’s a good idea to always keep some with you when you travel
Practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette: • Cover your mouth and nose with your arm to reduce the spread of germs • If you use a tissue, dispose of it as soon as possible and wash your hands afterwards Monitor your health: If you become sick when you are travelling, avoid contact with others except to see a health care professional. If you feel sick during your flight to Canada or upon arrival, inform the flight attendant or a Canadian border services officer. Upon return to Canada: For 14 days, monitor your health for fever, cough or difficulty breathing and avoid places where you cannot easily separate yourself from others if you become ill. To further protect those around you, wash your hands often and cover your mouth and nose with your arm when coughing or sneezing. If you develop a fever, cough or difficulty breathing within 14 days: • isolate yourself from others as quickly as possible • immediately call a health care professional or public health authority • describe your symptoms and travel history • follow their instructions carefully Government of Canada novel coronavirus information line: 1-833-784-4397; canada.ca/ coronavirus. Canadian airlines waive fees for flight changes In view of concerns about the coronavirus, many Canadian airlines are waiving fees for customers wishing to change their flights. Air Canada is permitting a one-time change for tickets purchased from the airline between March 4 and March 31 for travel within 12 months. This also applies to the airline’s Aeroplan flight reward bookings. Air Canada’s fee waiver applies up to 14 days before travel. Air Canada Vacations, a subsidiary of Air Canada that provides vacation packages to more than 90 destinations, has implemented flexible booking policies. WestJet Airlines is permitting a one-time change fee waiver applied to new bookings made between March 3, 2020 and March 17, 2020 for travel through June 24, 2020. Leisure airline Air Transat has two policies
in place, including one that applies to Venice, Italy, which has been hit with some of the first positive coronavirus cases in its historic center. All Air Transat customers who booked flights on or before March 2, 2020 for travel until June 30, 2020 can change their date or destination for a trip until Oct. 31, 2020. Other passengers travelling outside Air Transat’s eco budget fare class may change their travel dates, destination or hotel at no charge for bookings made between March 4, 2020 and March 31, 2020 for travel through Oct. 31, 2020. Most Canadian airlines
will waive the fee for changes made at least 14 days before travel. However, Air Transat passengers can change their booking up to 24 hours before departure. Sunwing’s waiver applies to all new bookings made from March 4-19, 2020 for flights until June 24, 2020. Passengers on Sunwing’s flights can purchase insurance starting at $50 per person that provides full cancellation coverage up until three hours before departure for any reason. All airlines require passengers to pay any fare difference between the original and new flights.

American Airlines debuts new uniforms After more than three years of collaboration with its frontline team members and union representatives, American Airlines has debuted a new uniform collection for more than 50,000 staff members. The new uniform collection, manufactured by classic U.S. lifestyle brand Land’s End, features new Aviation Blue suiting colour, and shirting and accessories that are unique to each workgroup. To help create the new uniform collection, American formed a Frontline Uniform Advisory Team, who made key decisions such as fabric colour and collection design. The airline also enlisted more than 1,000 frontline team members to field test the collection for six months before going to production. Team members were asked to vote on select design decisions along the way, as well as surveyed to provide feedback. For the first time, American Airlines’ team members were able to select their choice of either a wool-blend or synthetic suiting fabrication to ensure they felt comfortable in the new uniform. Freeman’s wish was to see the contributions and sacrifices of Indigenous Peoples and all Canadian Veterans honoured through the installation of this plane. Inspired by the Comox Canadian Forces Base unit badge, which features the Kwakiutl Thunderbird, he asked that it be added to the installation. The original badge,

In Memoriam Daryl Smith: Pacific Coastal Airlines founder and CEO
July 26, 1939 – February 1, 2020 Employees of Pacific Coastal Airlines are mourning the loss of its founder and CEO Daryl Smith. A former truck logger, Smith obtained his pilot license and began his aviation career as a “bush” pilot, where he accumulated thousands of flight hours and came to know the BC coast like few others. Throughout his early flying days as a seaplane charter pilot and flying salesperson, Smith was constantly searching for an aviation opportunity, which eventually materialized in the creation of Wilderness Airline, Canyon Airways, Powell Air and, finally, Pacific Coastal Airlines. From its inception, Smith made it clear that Pacific Coastal Airlines had a responsibility to support the people and commu-
nities it served and this spirit of giving back has become deeply embedded in the airline’s corporate culture. Throughout his career, Smith made a significant contribution to the development of the aviation industry in B.C. and was a recipient of the British Columbia Aviation Council (BCAC) Rob S. Day Trophy in 1998, and Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000. While the loss of the airline’s founder is a significant event, management of the business remains in the capable hands of son and president, Quentin Smith and an experienced executive and senior leadership team. A privately owned, British Columbia-based regional airline operating from the South Terminal of Vancouver
International Airport (YVR), Pacific Coastal is the sixth-largest airline operating at YVR—based on outbound seats—and third largest in takeoffs and landings. The airline flies to 16 airports in British Columbia, including destinations from as far east as Cranbrook in the Rocky Mountains; as far north as Prince George; to Masset on the legendary island of Haida Gwaii; and as far west as Tofino on Vancouver Island. With its affiliate airline Wilderness Seaplanes, located in Port Hardy on northern Vancouver Island, Pacific Coastal connects to more than 50 additional destinations along the south coast. Pacific Coastal also operates WestJet Link, which provides service from its base in Calgary

to Cranbrook, Prince George, Lethbridge, Lloydminster and Medicine Hat, and between Vancouver and Cranbrook. The airline’s network encompasses major ski destinations, a multitude of fishing lodges, outdoor and wildlife adventure tours and authentic First Nations cultural experiences. Daryl Smith’s love of family and friends, spirit of giving and visionary passion for aviation was evident to all who knew him and will continue to have a significant impact on the company

BC drivers embrace the move to electric vehicles If you’re already driving an electric vehicle, or maybe just thinking about taking the “plug” into ownership, consider yourself lucky to be living in British Columbia. Per capita, more electric vehicles were sold in B.C. in 2019 than anywhere else in North America—nearly one in 10 of all vehicles sold. And with more vehicle options and increasing range for all models, sales are expected to increase significantly in 2020. Not only are EVs in this province powered by clean and renewable BC Hydro electricity, but an expanding charging network and a range of EV rebates has made B.C. a haven for drivers of these vehicles. Following are eight things to know about EVs in B.C.: It’s becoming easier to charge an EV outside urban centres The bulk of BC Hydro’s fast-charging network is in the southwest corner of the province, but the network is fast expanding northwards and also on Vancouver Island, helping to bring BC Hydro’s fast-charging network to more than 70, and the total number of fast-charger stations in B.C. to more than 250. Funding has also been
approved for the rollout of 16 new BC Hydro stations and 15 upgraded or twinned stations over the next year. Etiquette is key at fast-charging stations The EV community is remarkably supportive of one another, at least until a driver stays plugged into a fast-charging station for more than 40 minutes—the time it takes to charge most plug-ins to at least 80 per cent of capacity. A fast-charging fact: after 80 per cent, the charging rate slows considerably and eventually to a trickle. Visit bchydro.com for more information on charging etiquette. Register early to test drive an EV at this month’s Vancouver Auto Show There’s a surging demand for electric vehicle test drives in B.C. and that can make it difficult to get behind the wheel of an EV. Consider test driving multiple vehicles available at the Vancouver International Auto Show, March 25-29 at the Vancouver Convention Centre, but expect that the drives will be popular, so register early. Install a home charger before March 31 BC Hydro’s top-up rebate on
the Government of BC’s up-to$350 rebate for the purchase and installation of eligible Level 2 chargers for homes expires on March 31, 2020. Only after the charger is installed can the single-family home charger rebate application, which offers up to a 50 per cent rebate on purchase and installation costs to a maximum of $700 when the BC Hydro top-up rebate is included, be processed. Learn more about the home charger rebate on BC Hydro’s EV charger rebate page. Not only Teslas can go 300 kms-plus between charges Tesla raised the bar on plugin vehicle range and its Model 3 has emerged as the highest-selling fully electric car in Canada. Other automakers are rising to the challenge and there are now nine different models from six different automakers available in B.C. that have ranges of between 363 kilometres and 539 kilometres. There are also three SUVs in the mix—the Tesla Model X, Hyundai Kona electric and Kia Niro EV. Not ready to go fully electric, consider a hybrid B.C. boasts at least 24 hybrid options that offer the combina-

Plugshare.com shows fast-charging stations in B.C. operated by BC Hydro (and in the southern Interior and Alberta by the Flo network) as of February 2020. tion of electric and gas-power for the practicality most drivers crave. They range from the MINI Cooper SE Countryman to the Chrysler Pacifica PHEV van. A big seller on the list is the Toyota Prius Prime, which boasts 40 kilometres of electric range and more than 1,000 kilometres of range on gas. Thanks in part to the federal rebate, EVs are becoming affordable While the tipping point at which the purchase price of electric vehicles is roughly the same as similar gas-powered vehicles is still a few years away, the gap is narrowing, with rebates continuing to play a major role: • When B.C.’s $3,000 rebate is combined with the $5,000 federal rebate, savings up to
$8,000 are available for the purchase of eligible new battery electric vehicles. • Hybrid plug-in rebates are available to a maximum of $4,000 when federal and provincial rebates are combined. • If you’re willing to scrap your old gas-powered vehicle, B.C.’s limited number of SCRAP-IT incentives offer an additional $6,000 rebate when you take your old vehicle off the road and buy a new battery electric vehicle. There’s also a SCRAP-IT rebate for the purchase of a used battery-electric vehicle of $3,000. • When the provincial and federal rebates are combined ($8,000), there are now at least nine fully electric
cars available for less than $40,000, including several whose base models can be purchased for less than $30,000 after rebates. The popular Toyota Prius Prime hybrid base model costs $29,000 after the $4,000 hybrid rebate is factored in. Grocery shopping while charging emerges as the perfect match There’s a distinct trend in B.C. towards a practical way to use time wisely while getting a vehicle charged at a fast charger: shopping. The three most popular BC Hydro fast chargers in December were in Loblaws parking lots at Coquitlam East, Southeast Marine Drive in Vancouver, and in Richmond.
