President’s Message

Abe Degnan Degnan Design Builders, Inc.

As this year and my second term as president of MABA comes to a close, I want to thank you for the honor of serving and the trust placed in me. I have one year remaining on the Board and the Executive Committee as Immediate Past President, where my job is to provide continuity and background information, to help the yearly transition in those groups.

I’m excited to reflect upon our year of change. And as I’ve said every month, expect more to come! I’ve encouraged you to be involved and to take pride in how strong MABA has remained through the challenging economy and changes we’ve experienced. What I said in January bears repeating at the end of this year: The Madison Area Builders Association is still strong! We have a long history of good management, successful events, and strong volunteers. Our staff, though small in number, are dedicated and hardworking. We have consistently had a great Board of Directors that has exhibited careful decisionmaking and care for MABA. MABA Volunteers are involved -- the committee members perform so much of the work of this Association. People work hard in their own jobs, and yet work even harder through volunteerism for MABA. Throughout this year, have you felt our strength grow? Have you felt the strength in your own business grow?! I’m excited by what I see in our membership, in our staff, among my trades and suppliers, and in my own business. I hope you are experiencing the same blessings and rewards for your hard work as well. I’m proud of MABA’s accomplishments this year. Here are just a few, and if you missed them, plan on taking advantage of the 2014 opportunities! • The Silent Auction success, raising the most money since 2008, and creation of

the “Mayors Club.” • A re-invigorated education program, including the Mock Trial, OSHA violation prevention, and several other educational offerings throughout the year. • Hammer With A Heart reached a milestone of 10 years, under the continuous leadership of Al Terry (Stealth Security LLC)! • Our long standing trade show is re-branded and reinvigorated as the Dream Home Showcase for 2014. • Our December installation dinner was streamlined this year, and our our September meeting became a “tailgate event” in MABA’s parking lot. Wow! As I look back on things, it has been quite a year indeed. Have you been one of our members who have helped to keep MABA strong this year? I thank everyone who has helped: The Executive Committee, Board of Directors, our staff, the Committee Chairs, all the Committee volunteers, and every one of you members who have attended at least one event this year. I salute you, and look forward to many more years together. December 2013

Dream Home Showcase, A Transformation In the November edition of The Right Angle we announced the re-branding of the Home Products Show - now known as the Dream Home Showcase. There’s great news for us in the industry ... consumer confidence is on the rise. Home sales were up in 2013 by 18 percent. Homeowners are optimistic about the future. They are ready to start projects, and that’s why we’re enthusiastic about the 2014 Show! We’ve had great feedback about the upgrades to the show ... from members to exhibitors. People are already buzzing about it. They’re excited about the changes we’re making, and so are we. We have listened and observed, and we’ve taken on the challenge to transform our Show into a modernized event that will attract a broader cross section of the public, in particular, the younger demographic. The committee is hard at work to finalize plans for a more interactive show, making it a great experience for the consumer, as well as the exhibitor. We’ve come up with ideas that haven’t been tried in past Virgil Waugh Dream Home Showcase shows but are successful in other shows across the country. Committee Chair

No dream is too small or big for The Dream Home Showcase! The Dream Home Showcase is about new technologies, new products, and new services. It’s about making dreams come true, whether it be a new kitchen or a closet. Homeowners will learn what and where to buy, as well as who to call for installation and servicing. So pass the word - tell your friends and neighbors about it, and please consider exhibiting in the 2014 Show. Mark your calendar: February 28-March 2, 2014. The standard registration deadline has been extended to December 20th. More details are forthcoming. Questions? Contact Amber Schroeder at (608) 288-1133 x12.

Membership Report from Committee Chair Andy Voeltner Well, it’s been quite a whirlwind of a year as the Membership Committee Chair! The economy has begun to bounce back and we’re no longer hearing objections about the cost of joining MABA, but the time commitment involved in joining. I hope you’re as excited as I am about this change… the industry is finally making a comeback! All in all, MABA had a very successful year in membership. We are on “The industry is track to finish the year with a net increase in members for the first time finally making a in many years. I thank all of you for your help in making this possible. I’m so thrilled to have led the organization through a successful October comeback!” membership drive. 23 new members—this was beyond my wildest expectations!! I’m so proud to have worked with the dedicated individuals that serve on the Membership Committee in recruiting so many new members. It was fun to see many members - old and new - at the Annual Spike Dinner. I enjoyed hearing from the legends of MABA who shared what it’s been like to work in this industry over the years. I look forward to continuing their tradition as a relatively new leader and continuing to serve in this capacity as a member of the 2014 Board of Directors. The Ambassador Committee was implemented this year, and while not fully ironed out, I’m excited to report an increase in new members participating in MABA events and committees. I know Kayla Storlid, 2014 Membership Committee Chair, will continue to grow this program and make it even more impactful for the organization! Thank you for the opportunity to serve as Chair of the Membership Committee this year. Happy Holidays and a prosperous 2014 to you all!

Celebrating a Successful Year of Events In my very brief tenure at MABA, I’ve learned two things when it comes to events. MABA members are passionate about their industry, and MABA members like to have fun! In 2013, the MABA Tailgate was a big hit, with over 200 in attendance. The Parade of Homes Preview Party came back in a big way - 1,100 people enjoyed the festivities! From what I’ve heard a good time was had by all at the Brew, Brats & Builders party and had great energy to boot. So many more events were successful throughout the year, such as the Mock Trial and Silent Auction. As a matter of fact, the Silent Auction brought more folks to the event than in the past, and we collected the most in contributions since 2008. Good news - all of these events will return in 2014, including many other opportunities to learn from others in the industry on the issues that impact your business, and plenty of chances for networking as well. Perhaps even an unscheduled event....stay tuned. We’re shaking things up a bit by establishing a new format for membership meetings - socials will be socials, and meetings will be meetings. You will see that there is also a change-up in locations, taking advantage of the many great venues available throughout the area. In addition, we scheduled events for different days of the week to accommodate more members’ schedules.

We’ll celebrate 2013 successes by continuing to provide valuable programming in 2014.

Thank you to all who participated in MABA programming throughout the year. We’ll celebrate your participation and 2013 successes by continuing to provide valuable programming in 2014. Plenty of Activity during 2013 for MABA’s Government Affairs Efforts Business Day 2013 A group of 15 MABA members participated in Business Day at the Monona Terrace and State Capitol. Business Day is long standing MABA tradition and also serves as our Association’s lobby day. The MABA group joined fellow WBA members from around the state, as well as other Wisconsin business leaders from a variety of industries to listen to several nationally-renowned speakers. In addition, the group went the capitol to advocate on behalf of MABA’s legislative agenda to our local Dane County legislators. The group was able to speak face-to-face with MABA members who attended Business Day in our area’s elected officials giving the group the are pictured here with Dane County opportunity to make the officials aware of concerns Madisonl Representatives in the State Legislature. affecting our industry. The common theme throughout the legislative meetings became clear: HOUSING=JOBS. Spring Elections During the spring of each year, voters go to the ballot box for Wisconsin’s annual nonpartisan elections. This past Spring, four MABA supported candidates were victorious – Fitchburg Mayor Shawn Pfaff, Madison City Council members Paul Skidmore and Larry Palm and Supreme Court Justice Pat Roggensack. The campaign season saw MABA members fundraise and assist in the campaigns of candidates thereby personalizing the relationship it has with local policymakers. The Spring’s bright spots included Pat Roggensack’s re-election to the State’s top court whose docket is always full of high profile cases affecting the price of doing business in our state. Additionally, Shawn Pfaff, a long-time friend of the Fitchburg is a city that is developing at a fast pace building industry, was re-elected with a resounding 71% and Builders have been steadfast in their support of the vote to his post as the mayor of Fitchburg - one of for Mayor Shawn Pfaff during his campaigns. our area’s fastest growing communities. With 2013 being an “off year” as far as state and federal elections, Andrew and the growing Government of Affairs are ready to tackle a busy 2014 which includes full slate of elections in both the Spring and the Fall. Building Relationships One of the biggest priorities for the Director of Government Affairs & Advocacy is to foster the relationship between MABA members and elected officials. In a highly regulated industry and an industry that is dependent on the approval and permitting process by local elected officials – building a positive rapport with key decision makers is critical. Aside from the Government 10

Building Relationships (continued) Affairs Committee where local elected leaders appears regularly, MABA also invites key officials to special events where members can network with them in a relaxed and informal environment. In 2013, we saw Judge Rebecca St. John, Congressman Sean Duffy, and State. Rep. Keith Ripp and many others attend MABA’s socials events. This will continue and in fact will greatly expand in 2014 as the Government Affairs Committee has even more plans to give an opportunity for all of MABA’s members to become connected with local elected officials. Auction The theme from this year’s event was clear – The Auction is Back! Over 120 members and their guests descended on Bishops Bay Country Club for MABA’s annual political Fresh off fiscal-cliff negotiations U.S Congressman and former start of the Real World Sean Duffy made a fundraiser. After two years of partnering with the surprise visit at a MABA Board of Directors meeting. Realtors Association of South Central Wisconsin (RASCW), the 2013 auction had returned to an exclusively MABA event and the result could not have been more positive. Over 120 members and guests that attended the auction represented a 70% increase over last year’s attendance figure. Overall, the event raised nearly $20,000 which is the best haul the auction has had since 2008! These political funds are so critically important to ensure that the voice of our industry is heard by lawmakers. (When last month’s Right Angle listed Mayors Club item donors (items valued at over $100) for the 2013 Silent Auction, we inadvertently left Bob Tobe off the list and he should have been included. We apologize; thanks you so much for your generous contribution Bob!!) New in 2013 was the incredibly popular Mayors Club reception which was held immediately prior to the Auction. Members who donated an item or cash valued at over $100 were invited. Several of Dane County’s pro-growth elected officials joined the Mayors Club members for cocktails and conversation in an intimate setting. The event demonstrated to the elected officials that MABA members are united, organized and influential! The Government Affairs Committee and I could not be more excited to build from the resurgence of the auction in 2013 to set the stage for 2014’s planning. The bar has been set high so you can expect 2014 to deliver: higher valued items, another animated live auction, higher attendance and a larger presence of elected officials at the Mayor’s Club reception! Celebrity Auctioneers Tyler Wilkinson and Don Tierney kept the audience thoroughly entertained during the live auction portion of the event. The most highly sought after items are saved for the live auction and this year those items were fantastic. Here, Mark Brehmer is pictured as a live auction winning bidder of condo stay at the Northern Bay resort.

Wisconsin Builders Association Year in Review This past year has been busy for the Wisconsin Builders Association (WBA.) The WBA Board was hard at work retooling the organization to make our efforts at the state level even more impactful and relevant to all of our local associations. One major transformation was the restructuring of our senior staff. The decision to restructure the WBA and transform other areas of the association was done with thoughtful consideration for our future. Our new senior management team is now in place. In the newly restructured model, Kirsten Lee Villegas, WBA State Executive Officer, will work alongside Brad Boycks, WBA Vice-President of Advocacy, to advance the efforts of the home building and remodeling industry within the state. New WBA State Executive Officer Kirsten Lee Villegas was hired after a statewide search that attracted over 60 applicants. With Villegas’ appointment, the WBA – for the first time in its 66-year history – will be led by a female executive. She is a Wisconsin native with over 20 years experience in both the nonprofit and private sectors. “Kirsten brings a unique set of skills to the WBA,” said Craig A. Rakowski, WBA Board President. “Her strong executive experience and marketing savvy was exactly what we were looking for in the candidate to become our State Executive Officer. We are confident she will take the WBA to the next level in the years ahead.” “I am eager to work with and help promote the great home builders, remodelers, developers, and industry experts from around the great state of Wisconsin,” said Villegas. “Working with our 23 local Executive Officers throughout the state to support them and help advance their efforts will be a top priority in the years ahead.” State Advocacy 2013 was another very busy and very successful year for WBA’s advocacy efforts. We were able to achieve a number of legislative and regulatory wins in the first year of the 2013-2014 legislative session, some of which have been on our agenda for over a decade and were finally addressed in 2013. Deliberations on the Wisconsin State Budget dominated our efforts during the first six months of the year and produced a number of key wins which included: • Elimination of the Building Contractor Registration (BCR) which was a $100 fee “credential” forced on those that were working on a home but not required to pull a building permit • A property tax freeze to keep housing affordable • A $676 million income tax cut for consumers and WBA members structured as an LLC • A uniform commercial erosion control standard and more uniform stormwater standards Some additional key wins in 2013 include: • A six year review cycle for the Uniform Dwelling Code (UDC) • A streamlining of the wall bracing code • Modernization of the remodeler’s rule, DATCP 110 • An end to the patchwork of regulation on shoreland zoning areas that were formally under county regulation • Better contractor and consumer guidance to deal with contracts signed as part of an insurance claim to combat “storm chasers” If you have ideas or suggestions for the WBA for 2014, please do not hesitate to give us a call or send an email. Here’s to A Prosperous New Year! 2013 has flown by and there’s so much in the works for 2014! It’s such an exciting time for MABA and it’s been my great pleasure to get to know all of you in my first six months. 2013 brought changes to some of our programming, communication and messaging, but look for even more of that in 2014 - including a new website later in the year. We’ll continue to look for ways to provide increased member value in the next year. Please don’t ever hesitate to contact me with any ideas you may have to improve and grow MABA! As we usher out 2013, and welcome in 2014, I wanted to take a moment to thank you all for the warm reception you’ve given me. There’s one thing that makes MABA unique—the relationships you all share with one another. You truly are members who treat each other as family. You’ve all quickly welcomed me as a member of your family and I know that several lifelong friendships have already been formed! Finally, a great big thank you to the many volunteers, committee and board members for all they’ve done over the last year to make MABA successful. Your time and energy is incredibly valuable - thank you doesn’t seem a big enough word! Happy holidays to each and every one of you - here’s to a prosperous new year!

The Caring Hearts of MABA Members Were on Display in 2013! MABA Members Build for the Less Fortunate in El Salvador - Early in 2013, Chuck Elliott and Dawn McIntosh spent 8 days in a rural area of El Salvador building homes for Habitat International. This was a truly labor intensive project as they built basic, functional housing for El Salvador’s least fortunate in a remote and isolated part of the country. The two have both spoke about on what a meaningful adventure they had. “This trip has been personally very rewarding” commented Chuck Elliott. “It was a lot harder than I thought, but well worth it,“ shared Dawn McIntosh. Habitat for Humanity of Dane County, which has been a frequent partner of MABA, has made a 3 year commitment to supporting Habitat of El Salvador. MATC Scholarship Award Winners - Annually, MABA provides the funds for two $1,000 scholarships to MATC students who are enrolled in the following programs: Construction & Remodeling, Cabinet & Millwork, or Architectural Technician. Interested students must submit application materials, and the scholarships are competitively awarded. The scholarship is funded by the MABA foundation and each year the MABA golf outing there is a fundraising effort to continue this effort. The 2013 scholarship recipients, Jordan Henkel and Jon Compean, are talented, young students at MATC with a bright future in the industry. Jordan and Jon were able to attend the February Evening Membership meeting where they were recognized by MABA’s membership. In 2014, look for the newly re-configured Workforce Development Committee to enhance MABA’s scholarship efforts. Habitat for Humanity - 2013 also saw the construction of a Habitat for Humanity house in Verona led by MABA volunteers. This undertaking allowed deserving homeowner Carla Hamilton to provide safe shelter for her young children. Carla is extremely grateful for all the help that volunteers from the Madison Area Builders Association have provided to her. She learned a great deal working side-by-side the MABA volunteer builders while working to complete her 325 hours of sweat equity in the building of her home. Several MABA member businesses provided in-kind services for this special build. MABA also provided in-kind labor where the skill of MABA craftsman will forever be on display within the house. All in all, over 40 members participated in this undertaking led by the dedicated efforts of Dan Duren and Dawn McIntosh. The event wrapped up with an official House Blessing in June when Carla officially moved in and expressed her sincere appreciation for MABA making such a big difference in her life at the move-in event. Hammer with a Heart - In May of this year, MABA marked the 10th year that it has teamed up with Hammer with a Heart to help local homeowners make necessary home repairs to improve unsafe and unhealthy living conditions. This year’s homeowner who received the repairs was a military combat veteran and two-time cancer survivor who is currently in the midst of severe financial challenges. The homeowner’s neighbor was the MABA home for the 2009 Hammer with a Heart/MABA partnership. The repairs done by MABA volunteers this year allowed the homeowner to stay in and enjoy his home as it was at risk of being uninsurable. A special thanks to Al Terry who perennially spearheads this operation and has led the efforts that has touched so many families in need over the years delivering to them $250,000 in total home repairs over the course of the Hammer with a Heart/MABA partnership. Fire Safety House - In October, with the Dane County Fire Chiefs Association and Governor Walker, we unveiled a mobile fire safety house built by the labor and material donations from MABA members. The small-scale home will be available for each Dane County Fire Department to use for fire prevention education in a realistic setting. The newly constructed house replaces the existing fire safety house which was also built by MABA, it had seen more than 10,000 visitors tour it annually and we expect even more exposures for our new fire safety house!
