President’s Message The Parade of Homes is in full swing as I write this in midJune. I hope it is fruitful for all MABA members—both the Builders who participate and the Associates who are promoted and who gain their work by being employed by our Builders! I’ve done my own unofficial tally and here at Abe Degnan Conservancy Place in DeForest, attendance looks to be up Degnan Design over last year again, possibly by as much as 10%. I visited Builders, Inc. every site and appreciate the work of everyone involved to help make this event fantastic. Thanks especially to Parade Chair Justin Temple (Temple Builders) and everyone who was involved on the Parade Executive Committee for making this happen, as well as Andrew, Sandi and Chuck for their staff work during transition. I also thank Justin Temple and his Preview Party subcommittee who put on an amazing event—I think we doubled attendance over last year! Wow! I loved the food, the music, the beer, the homes and the networking. What a lot of fun! What a positive start to a successful Parade year. I’ll remind you again about the fantastic, fun events we have coming up The MABA golf outing is on Tuesday July 16th. WBA committee and board meetings on July 11th golf outing on 12th, . Gathering at the Grove is Monday August 5th.. Our first Evening Membership Meeting of the fall is Monday Sept. 9th. These are your opportunities to make the most of your membership. Are you looking for a reason to attend? You haven’t been anywhere lately? You wonder if you are getting your value out of MABA? Well, consider this: Want to meet people? Want to network, get to know potential new vendors and subs? Want to meet Builders who might want to do business with you? Want to meet other Associates who might need your services? Want to chat with and learn from friendly competitors? Want to drink some beer? Want to be a sponsor and promote your company? You can do any of these at any of these events. Don’t miss out. What are you waiting for? Get involved! Finally, let’s remember our responsibility as industry professionals, and make sure that MABA members are industry leaders. The Education Committee has a robust schedule planned for the summer and fall-- see the insert in this issue and sign up today. The seminars include relevant and practical info for ALL of our members including: a DCQ accredited OSHA course for Builders, a seminar that will teach you to put the sizzle in your website (relevant to any business owner!) and the almost-famous Contractor/Client mock trial at the Madison Club accompanied by a cocktail reception. Remember- Get involved, be a leader, be a professional—Improve yourself and improve MABA! July/August 2013

A Message from the Executive Director Wow—what a time to join MABA as the new Executive Director! To those of you I’ve had the pleasure of meeting as I toured the Parade of Homes or visited at the Parade Preview Party, thank you for the very warm welcome. I look forward to meeting the rest of you at upcoming committee meetings or at one of MABA’s educational or networking events! From OSHA seminars to mock trials to help you from ending up on the wrong side of a law suit, we have a busy summer schedule— and don’t forget to join us for a round of golf and a laugh or two at MABA’s golf outing on July 16, 2013. I’m truly inspired by the passion MABA members have for this organization, industry and community. In my short tenure with MABA, the Parade of Homes has launched and finished (quite successfully, I might add!), a MABA sponsored Habitat for Humanity house has been raised and blessed and committee discussions regarding the Home Products Show have begun and planning is well underway. I look forward to all that the next few months brings! Please feel free to contact me at any time with questions, concerns, thoughts or ideas you may have in regards to MABA’s membership, programs, and community activities at Schroeder@maba.org or at 608288-1133 x12. I welcome any new thoughts or insights you may have and look forward to helping you achieve both your personal and business goals!

MABA helps defeat a dangerous Madison ordinance In mid-June the Madison Common Council voted down an ordinance proposal that would require city contractors to disclose certain political donations. Many MABA members participate in bidding for city work and have expressed that the process is already rife with endless and unnecessary questionnaires and reporting requirements. The new disclosure obligation would not only add one more hurdle to the already burdensome process, but it also inquires into an area that is completely irrelevant to any piece of information that would be helpful to evaluating the actual merits of a bid for city work. In fact, a common council member publicly stated that it was intended to publicly “embarrass city contractors who fund political causes that are not favored with the Council. As a result, the ordinance effectively gives the Council power to use city contracts to punish political adversaries and reward political allies. After lobbying common council members and vigorously informing them of the ordinance’s ethical shortcomings and chilling effect it will have on local businesses that contract with the City, Alders rejected this proposal by a slim 11-9 margin.

Green Corner Clean Clear Waters Initiative will provide “Green Built” solutions for clean lakes, clearer waters At its June Board meeting, the MABA Board approved the Clean Clear Waters initiative proposed by WEI/Green Built Home as a way to highlight what builders are doing to reduce/avoid run-off from construction sites. To be recognized as a Clean Clear Waters builder, contractors must comply with the erosion control plan required for building permits by the local municipality and earn a minimum of 10 points from the Clean Clear Waters Checklist, a stewardship tool that identifies over 40 best practices in landscape conservation, stormwater management and builder operations. Participating contractors will establish a baseline of current stormwater management practices, set goals, implement best practices and measure improvements. Contractors will also receive market attention through use of the Clean Clear Waters logo, website listing, social media and plugs to the press. The program is free to Green Built Home members who certify all of their homes each year to Green Built Home standards. Otherwise, builders pay $100 per home. ”The building community can play an important role in improving our lakes by implementing best practices in erosion control, landscape conservation and stormwater management”, said WEI Executive Director John Imes. “By following some simple guidelines and achieving Clean Clear Waters recognition, builders can exceed customer expectations, increase their value proposition and help preserve our lakes for future generations.” To register for Clean Clear Waters and receive market attention for your efforts to reduce or avoid run-off from construction sites, please visit www.weigogreener.org
