INTRODUCTION

THE BATTLE Sober: A poster should invite, communicate, inform, convince, and also provoke. If a viewer feels addressed, a poster is able to influence his or her decisions through text and images. Emotional: @100posterbattle — one poster a day, for a hundred days, the span of a semester. Inspired by daily events from politics and current affairs. With the aim to try out different techniques, beyond the limits of conventional tools. Enriched by numerous guest lectures (Ariane Spanier, Götz Gramlich, Jiri Oplatek, Erich Brechbühl, Mirko Illic, Kris Andrew Small, André Liohn, Mona Bischof, Julia Weiss and Lukas Grassny). A challenge. An experience. In the end, 100 days of poster design reads like a diary. 20 / 21 was marked by the pandemic and its consequences for culture, society and education, the scary tweets of Trump and the upcoming US-elections, BLM, LGBTQ, Söder and Laschet in the power struggle, pro-democracy demos in Thailand, climate goals 2030, and fun-facts like the height of Mt. Everest which has shrunk by 86 cm, the eruption of the Sakurajima volcano in Japan, Elon Musk has become the richest man in the world as well as the boom of sextoys ...

01 ONLY COLLAGE 04.11.—20.11.2020

COLLAGE The political madness of the First World War produced DADA. Trump and his policies shook the world and insinuated madness. aside lockdowns, climate change and wars — together forming a good canvas for collages. well combined, often cheeky and reduced, collage can punch bluntly and directly in the face. One of the most famous artists representative for the revolt of artists against society and its value system is probably Hannah Höch (1889—1978). Höch’s work was intended to dismantle the fable and dichotomy that existed in the concept of the “New Woman”: an energetic, professional, and androgynous woman, who is ready to take her place as man’s equal. Hannah Höch’s “Klebebilder” are some of the most iconic works of the collage style from that period. As a child, Höch was already making paper collages. She created photomontages, using the child-like technique of replacement — the wrong head on the wrong body, reshuffling images, already exploring gender roles, androgyny, and politics, calling into question the very way society viewed itself. She already created a feminist discourse, which encouraged the liberation and agency of women during the Weimar Republic (1919–1933) and continues through to today. As of the beginning of last century, cut, paste and create stays one of the purest form of expression for our epoque, with all its juxtapositions, eclecticism, and strange bedfellows. Presently, the simple act of mixing together different elements allows us to question our reality and make new worlds.

MOST ABSURD RULES The story about typography has been told 1000 times, over and over. So here is a collection of the most absurd rules and assertions to follow in order to create a good poster and be a successful poster designer: 1. Align your choice of typography with the content of your poster. The designer has to carefully craft his design to make sure that the typeface is both legible and artistic at the same time (who the hell defines what is legible?). 2. N ever use more than three different kinds of type (why limit yourself when the sky is the limit?). 3. D on’t forget about the typeface’s weight. Choosing the right weight of font can draw the viewer’s eye, focusing their attention on a specific word or phrase that you want them to prioritize (priority, rules, laws, restrictions ... jail!). 4. Understand kerning (play around with spaces, tracking, leading). 5. Bring visual hierarchy into play (make your design look chaotic, make it complex!). 6. Work with grids (why that, content is king!) List to be continued. Forever ...

22.12.2020—05.01.2021

TOOL CHANGE Adobe was founded in December 1982 by John Warnock and Charles Geschke, to develop and sell the postscript page description language. In 1985, Apple Computer licensed PostScript for use in its LaserWriter printers, which helped spark the desktop publishing revolution. Since 2013, the Adobe Creative Suite CS6 stopped selling boxed copies and switched to Creative Cloud, a subscription model. Adobe acquired Macromedia in December 2005. In 2007, it stalled development of freehand, a direct competitor to Adobe Illustrator, effectively rendering it obsolete. In 2011, a group of 5,000 FreeHand Graphic designers convened under the banner “Free FreeHand,” and filed a civil antitrust complaint against Adobe at the US District court for the Northern District of California. The suit alleged that Adobe violated federal and state antitrust laws by abusing its dominant position in the professional vector graphic illustration software market. Further, it accuses Adobe to be engaged in a series of exclusionary and anti-competitive acts and strategies designed to kill freehand — the dominant competitor to Adobe’s Illustrator Software Product — instead of competing on the basis of product merit (according to the principals of free market capitalism). Adobe had no response to the claims and the lawsuit was eventually settled. The FreeHand community believes Adobe should release the product to an open-source community if it cannot update it internally. (Source Wikipedia) As of 2017, Adobe had approximately 12 million Creative Cloud subscribers. A good reason not to design with Adobe Applications in this session. Not that these are necessarily better, but the default settings of a software per se determine its output. Especially the hijacking of tools leads to exciting results.

USE ANYTHING ELSE Why would a designer ever use anything else to design than a computer? Well, there are things they can’t do. A brushstroke by hand is made in a second. The look of torn paper is created in seconds. The snot of ink runs uncontrolled. The smudged pencil is as unique as the fingerprint. Tough it is much more about controlled chance. Through random meetings, experimentation, improvisation, “mistakes,” or even unexpected results — happy accidents combine with sagacious insights to lead to novel outcomes, methodical innovation, changes in design direction, or new areas of research. One may ponder: Would all time great designers such as Paul Rand have used computers if they existed? Or would they still go on looking for happy accidents?
