EDITOR’S NOTE The HOMEBOUND project was born when the pandemic began to cause lockdowns worldwide. It all started in March 2020 when many designers and artists had to cancel commis sions and projects and many lost their clients. This gave me the chance to act and I simply asked publicly in an Instagram Story if some people would like to collabo rate. After receiving answers from all over the world, we decided to create a magazine that would present the free projects everyone created during this period to use up the extra time. In addition, there were the open calls for those who wanted to work together on a topic. The result was an incredibly beautiful documen tation of that time and of work that would never have been made under normal circumstances. With the second wave of the pandemic, I thought we had to repeat that. Has our attitude changed? What about our slowly emerging home office culture? Where are the contradictions? What can I touch? Which projects would never have been created without the pandemic? What have other designers and artists done? All these things were questioned, answered, and visualized in this publication. Every project submission was accepted and the designers and artists were even allowed to write their own articles. There is no competition here. The magazine is as personal and loud as possible. With this project I offer the whole community a stage. With the first publication we already formed a large family. That family has now become even larger through this one. The new waves of the pandemic brought a new aesthetic, a new voice and a great progress in networking and cohesion within the community.

IS AN ART DIRECTOR
HUGO SUISSAS
AS AN ARTIST, WHAT INSPIRES ME IN LIFE IS TO KNOW THAT ART AND IDEAS ARE ABLE TO PRODUCE MIRACLES. I BELIEVE THAT CREATIVITY CAN BE MAGIC AND IT CAN HELP OVERCOME GREAT CHALLENGES IN THE WORLD. MY HEAD DOESN’T KNOW WHAT THE WORD `´`‘STOP’ MEANS AND, SINCE THE WORLD NEVER STOPS, I WOULD SAY THAT IT’S A GREAT COMBINATION. I AM A SIMPLE GUY, I LIKE SIMPLICITY AND SIMPLE LIFE.
FROM LISBON, PORTUGAL, WHO’S NOW BASED IN GERMANY.
BY HUGO SUISSAS My name is Hugo Suissas and I’m an Art Director from Portugal, currently living in Germany, working as Art Director in a creative agency. What inspires me in photography is knowing that one image has the power to impact and helping to solve serious problems in the world. I entered the photography world around nine years ago and what I like the most in photography is, when I have a novel idea that I haven’t seen anywhere else. What I like the least is, when copycats try to copy my work, show ing a great deal of lack of respect for others and for the art community. My head doesn’t know what the word “stop” means, and since the world never stops, I would say that it’s a great combination. I am a simple guy, I like simplicity and a simple life. I am what you may call an obsessive artist, in the sense that I won’t stop until I can materialize what’s in my head through a photo. It’s a great deal of hard work. Everyday I sit on my desk with a white paper and pen and I exercise my brain, trying to come up with meaningful ideas and interesting projects. What allowed me to get here, is my almost uncontrollable desire to create things that haven’t been created before on this planet or any other in the galaxy. This is what gets me going. When I was a kid, I did magic as a hobby and did some magic shows. For me, magic and perspective are similar in the sense that all is an illusion. I have started to use perspective in my photos, when I realized that it was a great technique to convey an idea and get a reaction from the public. I believe that it was my “magic” childhood that inspired me to do what I do today.

MARVIN LOSCHELDERS
WE
MAKE
DESIGN.
JONAS DIEFENBACH
BY MARVIN LOSCHELDERS & JONAS DIEFENBACH Creating a design podcast was already in our heads before the lockdown 2020 started. We were just joking about it. “Come on, let’s record something about our favorite topic—design.” That was our intention. But first, let’s introduce ourselves. When we talk about “us” we mean Marvin Loschelders and Jonas Diefenbach, the founders and hosts of “Keine schönen Dinge.” Two guys working intensely in the field of design for many years. We both studied Communication Design in Cologne and in Dortmund in NRW, a high populated and open-minded region of Germany. We found ourselves talking about design all day long: Drinking beer at night, the topic was design, texting randomly, the topic was design. Design, design, design. Essentially, we enjoyed talking about design and loved to meet interesting designers, artists, and learn from those conversations. When the lockdown started, we didn’t think too much about what possibly could go wrong. We just wanted to begin something and occupy ourselves during this time of doing nothing! We started with by brainstorming possible episode structures and creating the concept behind the podcast, but the most important thing was: DOING! Executing. As efficiently as we can. It’s like the MVP Method from Product Development. Create, test, learn, and iterate. With our momentum, we chose to name ourselves “Keine schönen Dinge,” which means “No good-looking things.” It is related to the assumption that design has to be good-looking. We really hated that type of commentary about designers just making things look pretty and needed to set a statement against it. Our first recording was created using our iPhone microphones. It was decent enough in the beginning. A month later we bought studio microphones as well as began to interview several designers
and design professors from our universities. During this time we met Cihan Tamti, the creative guy behind this magazine. He was one of the first designers we had the chance to interview. Shoutout and big thanks for this collaboration! After almost one year, we had the chance to interview around about 15 designers during a time, where social distancing was omnipresent for all of us. We used the lockdown to con nect with other interesting protagonists within the design scene. Nikolai Dobreff, founder of the Heart-Directors-Club, Jan-Erik Baars, a Design Officer at Philips, Julian Zimmermann of Deutsche & Japaner, and interesting professors and students from design universities. We are thankful to everyone who shared their expertise and experience with us and our listeners. Our main goal with our podcast is to share knowledge and show different aspects of being and working as a designer. We think that our podcast can potentially help introduce various fields and job profiles. I mean, you can become a UI / UX Designer, a web designer, a graphic designer, or a motion designer, the list is endless. We hope to give anyone an orientation to find their favorite field to work in. Finally, we want to encourage an open discussion about design and help the creative community get to know each other better. Thanks to everyone who participated.

DAAN’S LATEST TYPEFACE, ROSDAR, WHICH HE IS CHOOSING TO SELL EXCLUSIVELY IN PRINTED FORM, IS THREADED TOGETHER WITH AN UNDULATING MOVEMENT IN ALL THE CHARACTERS TO CREATE SOLID, DYNAMIC SHAPES THROUGHOUT WORDS. THE TYPEFACE IS DESIGNED WITH ‘BLACK ON WHITE OR WHITE ON BLACK’ IN MIND, AND THE DESIGNER SAYS HE ENVISIONS IT ‘PLACED AT MAXIMUM WIDTH AND PREFERABLY AS ONE WORD AT THE BOTTOM OF A PRINT, DEPENDING ON WHICH LETTERS ARE BEING USED … OR EVEN BETTER,’ HE ADDS, ‘AS A LARGE WALL PAINTING OR A POSTER IN PUBLIC SPACE.’
BY DAAN RIETBERGEN “Rosdar” is a grid-based typeface designed in quarantine at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. While developing this typeface, I also decided to fine-tune the printer I got from my grandmother and for the first print release people could choose any character, word or sentence and I would make a custom print for them on a nice A5 paper for only 9.– euros. It was really great to make all these custom cards with different characters, because it’s the perfect way to see, if the typeface works and what needs to be improved. Additionally, I teamed up with my girl friend Korinna van Balkom, who designed sustainable and fashionable face masks as a counter-reaction to all the disposable face masks. She has a fashion background and this was a great opportunity to combine her work with my typography. When I design a typeface, I work with one strong basic principle. This principle determines the graphic language and the rules I impose on myself sometimes outweigh the legibility. In this case there is an undulating movement in all the characters. Specific parts are exaggerated, for example the belly of the lowercase “a.” The typeface is not consciously inspired by other languages or scripts, but many people see sim ilarities with languages that I did not know, like Armenian, Cambodian, and South Indian scripts, such as Malayalam and Telugu.

“NEW AESTHETIC” APPROACHES TYPE DESIGN AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE ART: LOOKING AT TYPE DESIGN WITH A BENEVOLENCE TO EXPERIMENTS AND PROCESSES, AND FINDING POTENTIAL IN THE UNUSUAL.
SOPHIA BRINKGERD
LEONHARD LAUPICHLER
BY SOPHIA BRINKGERD & LEONHARD LAUPICHLER Human language shows itself in so many artifacts of visual expression. Letters, hieroglyphs, runes, and icons—written language can work in many ways. Typography, as we understand it today, can serve as a universal, reliable, and longevous tool. What if we saw it as a playground? Designing on a molecular basis, questioning the small est unit of design, we can reinterpret what typography means. Can it be a keepsake from a creative odyssey, a teacher, or simply an ephem eral servant? “New Aestethic” challenges typography as a tool in reading culture and its functional shape—more so seeing letters in their individual appearance as artworks of their own. Independent type design doesn’t seek competition, it doesn’t seek or alter perfection, it tells stories of formal exploration and creates an ex pressive form of art in itself. The expressive nature of non–traditional, more open typography is a new kind of creative output worth aiming for and worth exploring. Technical perfectionism and a classical understanding of polished shapes are not the main parts of our debate. More so, “New Aesthetic” wants to acknowledge creative processes and see the stories behind them, as well as encourage designers to keep an open attitude towards new forms, styles, and systems. There is potential in blurring and obfuscating the lines of legibility and practicality pushing the boundaries of emotional expressiveness and allowing for unusual approaches in modern graphic design. “New Aesthetic” considers type design as an opportunity to create art: looking at type design with a benevolence to exper iments and processes, and finding potential in the unusual that might point us into a new future of practicing visual communication.

Last December I started working with collages again. I haven’t done that for many years, and that although collages could almost be called my first artistic affair. A lot of my work uses vintage photographies. For my new series “G I R L S I N T H E G R E E N H O U S E ” they are mainly from old PLAYBOY magazines from the 60s. I like these old magazines because the women there were mostly photographed carefully and respect fully. This creates an atmosphere of tenderness, a liberated and sometimes almost innocent portrayal of sexuality, which in my opinion has unfortunately been lost in the pornography of the present time. While I was joyfully working on this and other projects, I was unfortunately diagnosed with lung cancer at the end of the year. “S T R A N G E F R U I T ” deals with this shocking news.
