Juliane Eller / Juwel Weine, Alsheim, juwel-weine.de “Do what you can with what you have, wherever you are.” That is the philosophy of Juliane Eller, one of my oldest and most favorite clients from the beginning! When she was 23 years old, Juliane took over her parents’ vineyard in Alsheim in Germany’s biggest wine region and completely revamped it. In the last seven years, it has been lovely to see everything that she has achieved for herself and the wine world: shaking up a traditional industry and moving with the times instead of standing still! That makes me so proud! Ladies, Wine & Design Mainz, Mainz, ladieswinedesign.com/mainz Ladies, Wine & Design is a global nonprofit initiative with “Chapters” in 280 cities worldwide—it was started by Jessica Walsh to empower and support other women in creative businesses and to build a platform for sharing experiences. The network within Mainz is growing with awesome events, for example with Frauke Bönsch (photography), Stefanie Böttcher (Kunsthalle Mainz), Ela Wenner (author), workshops with Korliane (Letterling) and a lot of good wine and incredible talks! It’s an important place for creative ladies to meet. Hermann Schmidt Verlag & Leander Greitemann, Mainz, typografie.de Verlag Hermann Schmidt is the Mainzbased publishing house for all things typography and graphic design. It has pub lished a number of fantastic books with artists, graphic designers, and creative writers. From reference books about fine typography to food for thought for creatives. This year they published a book by a friend of mine: Leander Greitemann: Unfog Your Mind—Perspektivwechsel für mehr Lebenslust und LeichtSinn. Which brings us full circle!

Monika Nickel, Kindenheim, flechtwerk-gestaltung.de Monika Nickel is a master basket maker and wickerwork designer. Upon entering her workshop in Kindenheim, you are greeted by a cool breeze of incense and the smell of watered willows. This craft requires both strength and sensitivity. Weavers process a wide range of materials, from willow to recycled materials. For her work that was awarded with the State Prize for Arts and Crafts RLP, Monika Nickel weaves clothesline and willow into iconographic laundry baskets. Photo: © Michael Jarmusch Martina Stertz, Urbar, martina-stertz.de Martina Stertz is a master furrier by passion. In her workshop in Urbar she creates unique pieces of the highest quality in craftsmanship and design. A special focus lies on the careful handling and responsible use of the materials. In this way, an aging heirloom can be easily turned into a new favorite piece of clothing or a fluffy piece of furniture. Martina Stertz has received several awards for her innovative approach to working with fur. Photo: © Michael Jarmusch

Tischlerei Sommer, Breitscheid, tischlerei-sommer.de Tischlerei Sommer is a family business with the highest standards in craftsmanship and design. Roswitha Kaster, Riol, roswithakaster.de Roswitha Kaster is a photographer with a clear expression. “I prefer to photograph people” states the master photographer who works in her studio in Riol on the Moselle. The intense presence of the per son in the here and now is her concern. The open, intrepid look into the camera shows her intuitive ability to set aside all preconceptions for a short moment and to solely focus on the person. She captures this moment in her large black and white photographs. Her series of portraits of craftsmen was awarded the Crafts Prize RLP in 2019. Photo: © Roswitha Kaster Philipp Gröninger, Bendorf, philipp-groeninger.de Philipp Gröninger is a master gold- and silversmith, state certified designer within crafts and restorer. He has a workshop for jewelery and tableware in Bendorf and is a lecturer at the State Academy of Drawing Hanau. His work is characterized by a clear, minimalistic design language and excellent craftsmanship. Unobtrusive but beguilingly poetic. Phillip Gröninger has received several awards for his excellence in design and craftsmanship. In 2016 and 2019 he received the Crafts Prize RLP. Photo: © Philipp Gröninger Edu Tarin, edutarin.com Edu Tarin received his fundamental education in crafts at the family’s workshop in Valencia. He further refined his skills first at the EASD in Valencia and subsequently at the University of Applied Sciences Trier at the Department of Gemstone and Jewelry Design, from which he graduated with a Master in Fine Arts in 2015. Edu Tarin carves out his infinite loops from the raw stone, digitizes the shape and reconstructs the blank. In 2020, he was announced a finalist for the Loewe Craft Prize. Photo: © Michael Jarmusch

gutenberg-museum mainz Experience the history of printing, books, and writing “live”: Opposite Mainz Cathedral is one of the oldest book and printing museums in the world. Founded in 1900 by citizens of Mainz, the Gutenberg-Museum is dedicated to the “man of the millennium” Johannes Gutenberg and his inventions. Among the museum’s greatest treasures are two original Gutenberg Bibles from the middle of the 15th century. The reconstructed Gutenberg workshop is also one of the main attractions. Every day, there is an hourly demonstration of how printing was done in Gutenberg’s time. A modern film introduces the life and work of Gutenberg. In the Gutenberg-Museum you can learn about printing technology, the art of book production over many centuries, the history of paper and writing all over the world, the history of the press and much more. In changing special exhibitions, examples of historical and modern book and printing art and typography are shown and the bow to the 21st century is drawn. A visit to the educational workshop of the Gutenberg Museum is also exciting. In the print shop, everyone can try out typesetting and printing for themselves under expert guidance and become creative.

Institution The Gutenberg-Museum Mainz is one of the oldest museums for the history of books, printing, typography, and writing in the world in the place where Johannes Gutenberg brought letterpress printing with movable type to maturity. Established 1900

Ein Hoch auf das Netzwerk

Silke Philipps-Deters & Carolin Dürrenberg descom—Designforum Rhineland-Palatinate EN Hello! We are the Designforum Rhineland-Palatinate, a project supported by the Ministry for Economic Affairs, Transport, Agriculture and Viniculture RhinelandPalatinate. In 2019 we had our 20-year anniversary. We are dealing with all topics concerning design in Rhineland-Palatinate and act as a link between designers, professional associations, politics and all industries using or planning to use design services. In order to connect these different actors and to increase the visibility of design made in Rhineland-Palatinate, we are hosting the symposium Mainzer Designgespräche once a year in Mainz as well as the competition Designpreis Rheinland-Pfalz. The organization and conduct of seminars, workshops, and networking events are part of our activities as well. So how did we get into this magazine? The story began two years ago when we were sitting in the courtyard of the state museum in Mainz with Julia Kahl, co-founder and editor of Slanted. She had come to Mainz to be part of the design competition jury. We started talking about our exceptional exhibition project in Rwanda, the partner country of Rhineland-Palatinate, and our enthusiasm about it became clear very quickly. Only a few months later Julia came up with the idea to publish a special issue about Rwanda in cooperation with us. With great pleasure we started helping the Slanted editors in planning and only a year later the Rwanda issue of Slanted was published, simultaneously to the opening of our exhibition Products in Dialogue—Rwanda and RhinelandPalatinate at the Festung Ehrenbreitstein, Koblenz. Following this inspiring and successful cooperation, a few months later Julia came back to us with the idea to shine a light on Rhineland-Palatinate with a special issue. So, the year 2020 began with anticipation and an inspiring meeting with the Slanted editorial team—when suddenly the Covid 19 pandemic changed our life and working conditions at once. But we were lucky enough to recover very soon and the Slanted team found new (digital) ways to implement the issue. So, now you are holding the Rhineland-Palatinate edition in your hands. We hope that you have already discovered the vivid design scene of our federal state. And there is even more: people who promote design voluntarily, who bring together designers on a regional level and give their work the attention it deserves. A lot of what you can see here is supported by initiatives. We would like to express our sincere thanks to them: first

Transformation.

slanted—rhineland-palatinate

Above all, Rhineland-Palatinate stands out for its wine with 65 percent of German wine being produced there. But what about design? Following the Special Issues of Babylon (2013), Marrakech (2016), and Rwanda (2019), we were curious to find out more about our Heimat Germany and highlight regional differences. The first destination of our journey took us right across the Rhine, to Rhineland-Palatinate. In its state capital Mainz, Johannes Gutenberg invented letterpress printing and delivered the first printed Bible in 1456, and probably drank a pint of wine on it. The state was formerly founded from the French occupation zone after a referendum on the state constitution on May 18th, 1947, two years before the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany. The black, red, and gold of the flag of the Hambach Festival, the first democratic demonstration, are still the colors of the Federal Republic of Germany today. The state has a long tradition of arts and craftsmanship, supported and kept alive by a strong middle-class as well as strong regional institutions and cultural drivers. Awards such as the State Prize for Arts and Crafts promote, amongst others, outstanding gem and jewelry designers, ceramists, silversmiths, carpenters, barrel makers, and textile designers of the region. With the help of descom—Designforum Rhineland-Palatinate we sourced designers, photographers, illustrators and makers—all people who love their region and are passionate about what they do. So yes, beyond beautiful landscapes with vineyards, rivers, forests, and castles, Rhineland-Palatinate is a shining example of design in Germany, that moves with time while sticking to its roots.
