Guten morgen! If you had a great sleep last night you will enjoy and deserve an excellent “guten morgen”. If you are waking up in Germany, and if you are holding this magazine in early May, you must either be an exhibitor or a visitor at interzum Cologne. interzum is phenomenon in the furniture and bedding industries. It is always a pleasure to be part of such events. They play a pioneering role in industries. They direct and lead the way for others. They deserve respect and recognition from all related parties. Last month we were at interzum Guangzhou. It was also a big story. It was a truly success from all points of view. This means we have returned from a successful interzum to a bigger interzum. We are running inter-interum. But next stop will be home for us. We will be in Istanbul where we are headquartered. We will be at Evteks international home textiles show. Once again EVTEKS is ready to set new trends in home and contract textiles at the trend area for the following season. The show which renews its concept each edition, will present the trend area again this year with a rich content to inspire young talents on color, design, styles and more. With our next issue we will cross the Atlantic to attend Las Vegas Market in July, a rather hot season for Nevada but we are expecting hot business as well in the sleep products industry. We will be there to promote mainly the Turkish sleep products industry and the international brands which advertise with us. We wish success to all for their challenge in today’s tough economic and trade conditions! See you in Istanbul in October for Sleep Well Expo Istanbul, the only trade fair of the region dedicated to the sleep products industry only.

stores in export markets directly. England, Denmark, Belgium, Switzerland, Azerbaijan, Iran, Libya, Saudi Arabia and UAE are among our target markets. 2015 will be a year of leap forward for us.

General assessments on bed industry Bed production is a star segment for furniture industry in Turkey. People have become aware of the importance of beds for their health and comfort. So, the industry grows fast. Share of beds in trade fairs focused on furniture industry is also rising remarkably. Even special fairs, such as Sleep Well, are organized. We, as manufacturing companies, are selling products that have serious impact on public health. So we have to be as more cautious about the hygiene, health and quality of our products as the outlook and appearance of our products. We emphasize on these issues, as well.

BRN Sleep Products do not pave the way for any allergic diseases and discomfort. Berna Ilter also furnished information on the OEKO-TEX. The OEKO-TEX Standard is an independent test and certification system for textile raw, intermediate and end products at all stages of processing. Examples of articles that can be certified: yarns, fabrics, treated fabrics, manufactured articles (clothing of all kinds, domestic and household textiles, bedding, towels, soft toys and many more.) The OEKO-TEX testing for harmful substances is always geared towards how the textile will actually be used. The more closely the product is in contact with the skin, the stricter the human ecology requirements that it must meet. Confidence in Textiles – that has been the motto of the independent testing for harmful sub-

25

stances according to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for textile products of all types pose no risk whatsoever to health. With regard to the global structure and high division of labor in textile production the OEKO-TEX criteria catalogue for the first time provides manufacturers in the textile and clothing industry with a uniform benchmark on a

scientific basis for the evaluation of potentially harmful substances in textiles. The OEKO-TEX label indicates the additional benefits of tested safety for skin-friendly clothing and other textiles to interested end users. The test label therefore provides an important decision-making tool for purchasing textiles. “The Company is determined to upgrade its dynamic performance.

Having outlet centers scatted over Turkey, BNR aims at its countries to which it exports in 2015,” She added. “As a matter of fact, innovation has turned to be a way of life and the key strategy of BRN and become the strategic part of company’s long term growth. Instead of focusing on competitors, BNR has been keeping the pulse of its customers around the globe,” Berna Ilter noted.

A closer look at the mattress industry at home and in the globe The world mattress production is composed of %40 spring and %45 foam mattresses. The USA, China and Brazil are the top three bed producers in the world. The top three importers of beds are ranked as Germany, France and the USA. Poland, China and Belgium are the top three exporters of bed in the world respectively. Turkey is not among the top ten countries in terms of neither imports nor exports.

27

There are 25 greater companies employing 50 to 500 people. When counted with all of the smaller ones there are about 400 companies in the sector. Costs of entry are relatively low in Turkey and thus the number of companies in the industry tends to increase more. However about half of the companies are socalled shadow companies producing low quality products. Producers are heavily concentrated in three provinces, Kayseri, Istanbul and Izmir, respectively. Kayseri meet half of the total domestic production in Turkey with its about 2 million production annually. Annual bed exports accounts for about 46 million dollars. Most of the production is sold the European and Middle Eastern countries. Thanks to the labor, energy, raw materials and geographic advantages, Turkey is becoming an important center for mattress manufacturing. Industry sells about 3 million mattresses in traditional channels and 1 million mattresses in the modern channels of distribution and in individual stores of the companies. The mattress industry is expected to grow exponentially when more than thousand of hotel investments that each will have 700 to 900 beds.

28

Factors that hinder further development in the industry

and there are deficiencies in design fields.

Problems caused by shadow economy.

There is lack of international promotional activities that limits competitive power of the industry in international arena.

Even smaller companies can enter the industry easily as well as greater companies Unfair competition is a problem. R&D activities are highly limited

Mattress manufacturing is still regarded as part of furniture industry. There must be companies who produce only and especially mattresses. As for the profile of

individual customers, they are still not having enough information about the importance of mattresses for their health. They use the same beds for many years. Having some health and physical problems, they do not replace their beds. They must be educated for the effects of bed in their health. In Europe, people replace their beds in two years, while it takes about 8 years to renew it.

Ozay group exports fully A major company in production of bed cover exports all of its products

Lokman Ozay was a student in the eighties when he founded his company Ozay Group to export and to contribute in the national economy. Soon he was awarded by Turkish Union of Exporters as the youngest businessmen of the year. He told his story to our magazine Sleep Well: Lokman Ă–zay, Board Chairman of Ozay Group

53

On Ozay Groups successes I founded it in 1983 to export and trade of bed covers. Our product portfolio reached up to 52 items soon and become one of the major buyers of towels produced in Bursa. We import curtained bed covers from Germany for the first time in Turkey. In 1986 we started to produce futon beds, known as Japan beds, similar to floor beds used in Anatolia. It is made of % 100 cotton that was layered as 5 cm. of layers. They weigh less than 17 kilogram. Later we began to produce bed cover sets and visco bed bed covers. In 2003 we quit the production of beds.

54

On brands and products We use Turkuaz brand in bed covers, Mavi Ay in box spring bases. We have 104 different bed covers made of different materials including bamboo, horse hair, camel hair, wool and fibers, each are for certain season of the year. We even produce covers out of coconut fibers. Being natural they are healthier and comfortable.

On exports From the very beginning our policy is to export all our products. Our products are delivered to Germany, Belgium, Holland and Austria. Our box spring bed bases are exported to Switzerland, France and Israel. We seek new markets, as well.

On production We produce in our facilities of 5,500 sqm on a 20 thousand sqm land. We process 8,000 meter of fabrics daily and produce 3,500 bed covers. We produce 75 bed bases daily. Box Spring is movable and have springs beneath. These are delivered to Sweden, France and Holland. Recently to Hungary and Poland.

55

56

On fairs and fair activities We did not miss any fairs in the past. They were all profitable. This year we are going to participate only in Interzum fair, because we utilize our capacity fully. Our connections that we have built in 14 years are bearing their fruits. We may participate in the Sleep Well Expo Istanbul additionally. There must be more fair events in the industry.

Additional comments About 30 million dollars worth of bed covers is exported from Turkey. This can be increased remarkably. Only Germany and Austria need 8,5 million beds annually. Turkey may become a leading country in the world in bed cover manufacturing if we keep our quality and prices at suitable levels.

58

Yaysan dresses up beds of Europe

One of the oldest companies in the field, Polya Foreign Trade company will produce 6,000 bed covers daily, top in Europe, in 2015. Temel Cetkin, general manager of Yaysan, introduced his company.

On products of Polya company

On investments

It was established by Tomsire Cetkin in 1987 and had been producing beds of spring and foam types by 2000. Then it focused on the production of bed covers, by securing a great amount of order from a German company. Now our company expands its buyers in Germany. Besides, we produce 150 beds daily for domestic market under Polya brand name.

We employ about 300 people in our factory of 12 thousand sqm where we produces bed covers on about 170 machinery for quilt, zipping and industrial sewing. Some of them are automatic. We have a daily capacity of 3 thousand pieces of bed covers. Next year it will be doubled. Our headquarter is in Istanbul, other functions including manufacturing and logistics have been carried out in the factory in Tavsanli, Kutahya.

59

On basic product, bed covers The line seems to be a simple production. However, number of factors is important, including the quality of fabrics, zippers and fibers. They have to be combined accordingly. Productivity and efficiency in manufacturing operations are also important. Human factor and faults are another field for focusing on. We have successfully been preferred by buyers in Germany.

60

61

On export markets In our field, Germany, Austria and Poland are major countries. Poland has the lion’s share. Estimates show that in these three countries about 1.5 million pieces of bed covers is produced annually. Our share is about 10%. 90% of our production goes to exports. We also export to Switzerland, Belgium, France, Holland, Island, Finland and Sweden. In 2014 we sold about half million pieces in export markets. The volume will be higher when our operations an new factory gained momentum.

On developing automation of machinery In some cases standard machinery would not suit best to our processes. In these cases we seek better ways to do our work. By visiting fairs and exhibitions our experts find and develop solutions for productivity and quality of the work.

On mattress production We produce mattresses made of bonnell and pocked springs in our factory besides latex and visco

kinds. We use bed covers that we produce. Beds are mainly sold in domestic market. Some of our oldest buyers in export markets are also demanding beds from us. Sales of beds and pillows depend on the cultural and aesthetic choices of customers. In Turkey, people prefer harder beds, while Europeans sleeps on softer beds. Recent reports on the outlook of bed industry in the world point out that Turkish people replace their furniture more than their beds. Younger generations seem to change the sleep culture.

99

K.MOB 2015 5th Kayseri Furniture Fair organized by TĂźyap A.Ĺž. with the support and cooperation of Kayseri Chamber of Industry, Kayseri Chamber of Commerce, Kayseri Chambers of Merchants and Craftsmen Union, and Kayseri Chamber of Carpenters, Furniture Makers and Upholsterers, was held at the Kayseri World Trade Center, 22-26 April 2015. High-ranking officials attended the opening ceremony including Kayseri Governor Orhan Duzgun, Kayseri Chamber of Commerce Mahmut Hicyilmaz, Cooperative of Merchants and Craftsmen

Chairman Mustafa Alan, Chamber of Merchants and Craftsmen Chairman Ahmet Övüç, borough masters, furniture manufacturers and invitees. Delivering a speech at the opening ceremony Kayseri Governor Orhan Duzgun said that the furniture sector was one of the locomotive industries of the city. “Marketing of the products is also

101

crucial for trade. For that reason trade fairs offer excellent opportunities. Manufacturers find new fields for themselves to market their products and they make new business ties. It is also important to develop the trade of the region and the city,” the governor said. “We had witnessed during the agriculture fair staged last month that this fairground is not sufficient for the city. Works should be done for a new and wider fairground.” Governor Orhan Duzgun said one of their important projects was Mobilyakent which will collect almost 700 SMEs under one single roof. “They will continue their manufacturing on the one hand and they will display their products on the other. Mobilyakent will offer working atmosphere at places which have sound and strong infrastructure and the place will offer good opportunities for the consumers as finding

102

a lot of alternatives at one place to source what they really need.” The governor also stressed that the sector needs better and more active R&D studies in order to compete at international markets. Speaking on his part at the opening ceremony Mahmut Hiçyılmaz, Chairman of Kayseri Chamber of Commerce, also stressed the fact that the furniture industry was the locomotive of Kayseri and that R&D studies should be given more priority and more attention. “In a survey we conducted last year we saw that Kayseri is not at the forefront in R&D studies. We are better in developing projects. That means we have scientific men to develop projects but we need to reinforce this with more R&D studies and more commercial production,” Hiçyılmaz said. Mahmut Alak, Chairman of Kayseri Furniture Industrialists’ Association (KAYMOS), also made a speech and promised that they would spare no efforts to develop Kayseri furniture industry but they wanted the Kayseri administrators to provide a better exhibition center. “We had organized a trade visit to Israel last month. We met Israeli manufacturers there. We invited them to Kayseri to promote their products with the promise that we would reimburse their expenses for the visit. They asked us how big our exhibition

103

104

area was. We slid over the question by saying ‘it is big enough’ without mentioning any square meter. If we had mentioned the real size I am afraid they would refuse to come. If we can overcome this problem we will perform better, Mahmut Alak stated. Kayseri Furniture Fair, organized for the fourth time in 2014 hosted a total of more than 50,000 professional visitors from 35 countries and 63 cities from all over Turkey, and generated millions of dollars of business volume. Turkish furniture industry becomes a fashion sector 110

111

Furniture production in Turkey dates back to the 19th century and was done in small workshops as artisan production. However, by the rapid globalization and all other aspects, present furniture industry is becoming a fashion sector.

In Turkey, furniture is produced both in workshops and industrial-scale manufacturing units. Furniture production is highly fragmented among a large number of small workshops. These small workshops play an important role in producing hand carved and handmade furniture. Workshops are flexible establishments in nature and have enough capacity and labor force to expand their production line in order to supply large orders. Large-scale furniture firms produce standard models by using automated mass-production techniques and most of their production is oriented towards export.

In accordance to data from Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat), in 2009 furniture production was realized as 6.4 billion Turkish Liras. According to the recent General Census of Industry and Business Establishments (2008), the furniture sector employs 150,427 people and the industry has 34,438 companies manufacturing various furniture. Moreover, capacity data of The Union of Chambers of Commerce and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) reports 40 companies who have over 250 employees and 155 companies who have over 100 employees. Besides, Istanbul Chamber of Industry’s list

112

of the top 500 industrial establishments of Turkey includes six furniture companies. According to the list, these six companies are; Boytaş Mobilya San. ve Tic. A.Ş, Merkez Çelik San. ve Tic. A.Ş, Merinos Halı Sanayi ve Tic. A.Ş, İstikbal Mobilya San. ve Tic. A.Ş, Major SKT Oto Donanım San. ve Tic. A.Ş. and Teknik Malzeme Tic. ve San. A.Ş. Furniture production in Turkey is concentrated mainly in IIstanbul, Ankara, Bursa (İnegöl), Kayseri, İzmir and Adana. The most important furniture production districts are Istanbul and the region of Bolu-Düzce, which is famous for its production of wood products. The well-known furniture-manufacturing district in Turkey, called “Siteler”, is located in Ankara.

113

The number of registered small and medium sized enterprises in “Siteler” is over 10,000. In Ankara, there are many labor–intensive small enterprises manufacturing classical-handmade furniture and there are about 10 major furniture manufacturers who have mass-production capabilities. The wood industry is developing rapidly in the Bursa-İnegöl area, the third most important furniture production region, which is sur-

rounded by forest areas. The furniture industry of the İnegöl area is small sized but has great potential to improve itself. Another important furniture region is Kayseri, which has large capacity for the production of sofa beds, couch beds and seven of the twenty two largest manufacturers of Turkey are established here. İzmir also has a furniture production districts called “Karabağlar and Kısıkköy” which supply furniture to the Aegean Region.

PRODUCTION In Turkey, furniture production can be classified in accordance with materials used as wooden furniture (massive and veneered), metal furniture and others. Wooden furniture has a major share in total furniture production. As it is known for good quality furniture, the types of wood used and plywood inputs have to be taken into consideration. The main types of wood used in the manufacture

114

of massive furniture in Turkey are ash, beech, oak, pine, linden and mahogany. In veneered furniture, oak, beech, walnut and mahogany are used. Turkish furniture factories use the latest technologies in producing furniture, which is always up to world standards. Since 1990 the application of advanced technology and the use of CNC benches in the Turkish furniture industry have been increasing. Today, all of the large enterprises in the furniture sector use CNC benches.

115

Most companies are equipped with modern machinery which allows the production of good, export-quality products. Quality control starts from the stage when the raw material is produced and continues till the end of the packaging process. Most of the companies have already obtained ISO 9000 certificates

and other required quality certificates. The large scale firms comply with world standards in their packaging processes. In packaging PE, PP, foam, poly-urethane and cardboard boxes are used. Many of the large companies have special packaging sections. As with many other consumer products, furniture production is

sensitive to changes in fashion. Since furniture design is an important aspect of marketing, Turkish designers are constantly following consumer preferences in foreign markets and introduce new designs and make model variations and improvements. Turkish furniture manufacturers and exporters are aware of the

116

fact that market trends and consumer behavior play an important role in the development and design of new products. Since Turkey has a strong textile industry, Turkish furniture manufacturers have the advantage of being able to use and to monitor a wide range of colorful new fabric collections as upholstery.

EXPORTS Turkey’s furniture exports have had an upward trend in recent years. In the last ten years, exports of Turkish furniture increased from US $ 192,1 million in 2001 to US $ 1,607.3 million in 2011. This is mainly due to improvements in capacity, quality and design. The export figure for 2011 was

US $ 1,607 million, representing an increase of 18 % with respect to the previous year. Main export products were: wooden furniture (excl. for offices, kitchens and bedrooms, and seats), wooden furniture for bedrooms (excl. seats) and seats for motor vehicles. In 2011, Turkey ranked third in the world exports of seats convertible into beds which also traditional

117

items which are showing the large family, hospitality and past nomadic characteristics of our nation. In 2011, Turkey exported furniture to 172 countries throughout the world. The main markets for furniture exports were Iraq, Germany, Azerbaijan, Iran and France. In recent years, Turkish furniture companies have been establishing showrooms and depots in increasing numbers in most of these countries. The Turkish contracting sector is one of the major sectors exporting services. Turkish contractor companies who have undertaken construction work abroad have completed many housing complexes, tourism projects, hospitals and health center projects, most of which were decorated with Turkish furniture. Turkish furniture is designed and made from the highest quality materials to ensure comfort, perfor-

mance and attractive appearance for a very long life. Different styles are produced such as classical, traditional and contemporary. With its designers and architects combined with its flexible production capacity, the Turkish furniture industry is able

to satisfy the requirements of all individual markets all over the world. Today, with all these aspects of the furniture industry, Turkey is among the most promising furniture suppliers in the world.

Start every day with a good night’s sleep Better Sleep Council has published a “BETTER SLEEP GUIDE”. The charming guide is published with the courtesy of the BBC and can be reached at: www. bettersleep.org

A good night’s sleep, just like proper diet and exercise, is essential to your mental, emotional and physical health. Yet many people just do not get the recommended amount of sleep needed each night to perform their best during the day. Instead, they sacrifice sleep and wake up to the consequences including difficultly concentrating, irritability, weakened immune system and even higher stress. The good news is that it does not have to be this way. Better sleep can be as simple as

sleeping on a better mattress! This brochure provides solutions, ranging from how to select a new mattress to tips on creating a sleep sanctuary, which will help you improve the quality of your life by improving the quality of your sleep.

A COMFORTABLE MATTRESS: THE FOUNDATION OF A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP The “shelf life” of a mattress depends on several factors such as usage, quality and even your

own changing comfort and support preferences. In general, a mattress set that has been in use for five to seven years may no longer provide proper comfort and support, and should be evaluated. A scientific study from Oklahoma State University, “Subjective Rating of Perceived Back Pain, Stiffness and Sleep Quality Following Introduction of Medium-Firm Bedding Systems,” found that participants with mattresses five years old or older reported significant improvements in sleep quality and comfort when sleeping on a new mattress, regardless of the sleeper’s age or weight.

So it is important to compare the mattress and boxspring/foundation you are sleeping on now to newer models every few years. After all, a new mattress can make the difference in how you feel and function each and every day and help you Start Every Day With a Good Night’s Sleep.

You may need a new mattress if... Like your favorite old chair or worn pair of shoes, your mattress can still feel comfortable long after it has lost its ability to provide your body with the proper comfort and support it needs. Here are a few

SLEEP ON THIS:

The warranty on a mattress and foundation is NOT AN INDICATOR OF HOW LONG THE PRODUCT SHOULD BE USED before replacement. instead, the warranty exists to protect the consumer from product defects, not against gradual loss of comfort and support.

things to consider when deciding whether it’s time to buy a new mattress and boxspring/foundation: * Your mattress is five to seven years old * You wake up with stiffness, numbness, aches and pains * You had a better night’s sleep somewhere other than your own bed (such as a hotel or friend’s guest room) * Your mattress shows signs of overuse (it sags, has lumps, etc.)

MATTRESS MENU: CHOICES IN BEDDING COMFORT The right mattress for a great night’s sleep is the one that meets your per- sonal needs for comfort and support. But before you start shopping for a new mattress, you will need to know some bedding basics. With some general mattress information on the variety of choices available, it will be easier to choose the right bed for you—and get a great night’s sleep.

* INNERSPRING. The most widely purchased type of bedding uses the support of tempered steel coils in a variety of configurations. Varying types and layers of upholstery provide insulation and cushioning between your body and the spring unit, resulting in a range of comfort choices. * FOAM. Solid foam mattresses also offer a wide choice of sleeping sensations or “feels.” They can be made of a solid core or of several layers of different types of foam laminated together. Advanced technology in polyurethane foams, refinements to traditional latex and the new visco-elastic (“memory”) foams have added to the choice of comfort, support and performance. * AIRBEDS. Airbeds are now designed to look like the familiar mattress/ foundation (boxspring) combination, with an air-filled core

providing the support instead of an innerspring unit or foam core. These designs also offer a range of “feels” and typically are adjustable to suit individual sleeper’s needs.

of sleep system you decide to purchase, always evaluate a mattress for comfort, support, durability and space. The mattress that best addresses these needs is the mattress for you.

* OTHER SLEEP OPTIONS. There are many popular mattress alternatives to address individuals’ comfort, support and space needs, including futons, adjustable beds and waterbeds. Futons are a popular alternative for those who need a sofa by day and a mattress by night. Electrically adjustable beds enable sleepers to adjust the head and foot of the bed to the most comfortable position. And most waterbeds are now designed to look like the familiar mattress/foundation, with a water-filled core providing support, coupled with layers of upholstery for insulation and surface comfort. Regardless of the type

* COMFORT. Today’s top quality mattress/foundation ensembles are built for superior comfort. Luxurious new cushioning materials and extra-soft surface treatments create a plusher, more comfortable feel. * SUPPORT. A good mattress and foundation will gently support your body at all points and keep your spine in the same shape as a person with good standing posture. Pay special attention to your shoulders, hips and lower back— the heaviest parts of the body. * DURABILITY. It’s the quality of the materials used and how they’re put together that determines how

long a mattress and foundation will provide comfort and support. * SPACE. Cramped quarters can turn sleeping into a nightly wrestling match. A healthy person moves anywhere from 40-60 times a night, including dozens of full body turns. You need freedom of motion while you sleep and to help you relax while getting to sleep. Make sure that your mattress gives you room to move around comfortably throughout the night.

SIZE MATTERS. Two people sleeping on a full sized (‘double’) mattress only have as much personal sleeping space as a baby in a crib. It is recommended that bed partners buy a mattress no smaller than a queen mattress. CALIFORNIA KING: 72” x 84” kinG 76” x 80”

QUEEN: 60” x 80” FULL (DOUBLE): 53” x 75” twin 38” x 75” Deciding between a queen or king size mattress really boils down to personal choice. A queen bed is 60 inches wide by approximately 80 inches long, perfect for couples who prefer close quarters. King beds are 76 inches wide by 80 inches long, the best choice for couples that want maximum personal sleeping space. Both twin and full sizes are approximately 75 inches long, which may be too short for some adults, especially men. Full size allows only enough space for a single sleeper shorter than 5 feet 5 inches tall.

FINDING THE MATTRESS OF YOUR DREAMS Once you are familiar with the menu of mattress options available, start the shopping process at a store that you know and

trust. Remember, it is important to have an educated salesperson who can guide you through the many choices in bedding to help you find the mattress that best meets your personal preferences. Once in the store, be sure to “test drive” your new mattress following the S.L.E.E.P. test. Remove your shoes (if you’re a woman, it’s best to go mattress-shopping in jeans or pants) and lie down on several different models in various positions, especially the one you usually sleep in. And remember, those few extra minutes of focusing on the “feel” of different mattress choices can save a lot of time later. Keep in mind as you test various mattresses that comparison shopping by model name may lead to frustration. You probably won’t find exactly the same model name in one store as you did in

136

another. As with so many products on the market today, many retailers prefer to offer products that are exclusive to their store. For consumers that means more to choose from, and following the S.L.E.E.P. test will help you make the right selection.

Mattress to mattress, helpful tips to guide your purchasing decision: * For proper support, a mattress and foundation must support the body at all points with the spine in the same shape as a person with good standing posture. * Ask the salesperson if they can show you illustrated or actual “cutaways” of the interior of the different mattress and foundation choices so you can see what’s inside. * Compare store services such as delivery, financing and removal of old bedding as well. Many retailers today offer mattress removal service as part of your purchase price or for a nominal fee. * Shop for the best value, not the lowest price. The best assurance for good mattress performance

over many years is to buy the highest quality sleep set you can afford. After selecting your new mattress, buy the manufacturer’s recommended boxspring/foundation to support the mattress, as the two are designed to work best together. In fact, buying the mattress without its

matching foundation may affect the terms of the warranty and could also compromise its level of fire resistance. You should never put a new mattress on an old boxspring/foundation.

DEVELOP YOUR SLEEP SANCTUARY While the mattress is the heart of your bedroom, other environmental elements such as lighting, color and accessories, play an important role in the total sleep experience. Your bedroom should be an oasis—a soothing space conducive to relaxation and indulgent comfort. And producing a sleep sanctuary doesn’t have to be difficult or costly. Regardless of space or budget you can transform your bedroom into a haven of comfort. Comprehensive bedroom makeover tips are available online from the Better Sleep Council at www. bettersleep.org.

SLEEP ON THIS:

SOME RETAILERS OFFER “COMFORT GUARANTEES,” the option to return a mattress if you take it home and find that it is not comfortable. That offer can sound appealing, but in practice, it can mean extra days of coordinating pick-ups, re- delivery and another day of shopping. Consumers are advised to take steps in the store to assure the mattress and foundation they choose is the right one first time around. BETTER SLEEP COUNCIL BETTER SLEEP TIPS The sleep set is literally the foundation of your sleep. It’s important to make an overall commitment to healthy, restorative sleep. Here are some tips from the Better Sleep Council for maintaining a healthy sleep cycle and ensuring the best night’s rest: 1. Make sleep a priority by keeping a consistent bedtime and wake schedule, including weekends.

2. Create a bedtime routine that is relaxing. Experts recommend reading a book, listening to soothing music or soaking in a hot bath. 3. Make a room that is dark, quiet, comfortable and cool for the best possible sleep. 4. Evaluate your Mattress and pillow to ensure proper Comfort and support. If your mattress is five to seven years old, it may be time for a new one. In general, pillows should be replaced every year. 5. Keep work Materials, Computers and televisions out of the bedroom.

6. Exercise regularly, but complete workouts at least two hours before bedtime. 7. If you sleep with a partner, your Mattress should allow each of you enough space to move easily. A queen mattress is ideal for two people sharing a mattress. 8. Avoid eating, alcohol, nicotine and caffeine close to bedtime. These can lead to poor sleep, keep you awake or disrupt sleep later in the night.

The retail market for home furniture & bedding in US Industry Market Research Report from IBISWorld Updated Bolstered by rising consumer confidence and housing starts, the home furniture and bedding retailing industry is expected to grow over the five years to 2019; additionally, access to credit is expected to rise substantially over the five-year period, boosting the ability of consumers to purchase big-ticket items, such as furniture. For these reasons, industry research firm IBISWorld has updated a report on the The Retail Market for Home Furniture & Bedding industry in its growing industry report collection.

139

among individuals aged 25 to 34, this consumer segment’s share of market revenue has declined from the end of 2009 to 2014.

New York, NY (PRWEB)

Despite a moderate degree of sales volatility, rebounding consumer confidence and housing starts have spurred purchases for home furniture and bedding retailers in recent years. Industry operators span a diverse range of retail channels, selling bedding, sofas, chairs and other furniture for household use. While the price of the industry’s average product is expected to increase slowly, rising sales volumes have driven revenue growth for industry operators over the five-year period. More specifically, given that all of the industry’s products are ultimately destined for the homes of consumers, the annualized growth anticipated for housing starts from the end of 2009 to 2014 has allowed industry revenue to recover from recessionary lows. More specifically, over the five years to 2014, industry revenue is expected to increase at an annualized rate. According to IBISWorld Industry Analyst Stephen Hoopes, “Con-

trasting the industry’s moderate degree of revenue volatility, the industry’s target markets have remained consistent.” The largest market segment for home furniture and bedding retailers remains consumers aged 35 to 44. These consumers are the top spenders with respect to furniture purchases, largely because the group includes a number of first-time homebuyers. Alternatively, the second-largest market segment for industry operators comprises of consumers aged 55 to 64. While this segment ranks second in terms of furniture spending, they spend significantly more on bedding than any other consumer segment. Perhaps the largest change in the industry’s markets has stemmed from younger consumers. For example, given climbing student loan debt levels

Over the five years to 2019, industry revenue is forecast to rise at an annualized rate. “Spurred by renewed sales, the industry’s average profit margin is forecast to rise slightly over the period,” says Hoopes. Capital improvements also explain a portion of the industry’s improving profitability, with efficiency gains lowering operating costs to a certain degree. However, home furniture and bedding retailers are anticipated to remain heavily reliant on labor for sales, with wages failing to keep pace with revenue explaining a larger portion of the industry’s forecast improvement in profitability.

Greater access to credit will allow more people to purchase bigticket items, like furniture

Finding a back-friendly mattress: 6 tips” from Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Spine Health Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Spine Health has focused on the type of mattress playing a key role in your health. Excerpts:

The type of mattress you sleep on plays a key role in the health of your spine. But one style does not fit all when it comes to mattresses. Your body weight, shape and personal preference determine whether an innerspring or a foam mattress will be most comfortable for you, says physical therapist Marleen Caldwell, PT, MS, Cred MDT, of Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Spine Health.

Clues that you may need a new mattress include: -Morning pain or stiffness -Restless sleep -Sleeping better when you’re away from home -Visible mattress sagging or lumpiness

Here are 6 tips for settling on the right mattress: 1. Spend at least 15 minutes on a mattress you want to buy. Lie on your sides, your back and your stomach (if you sleep prone), to

make sure the mattress is right for you. It will be a wise investment of time, and your back will thank you for it! 2. Weigh the benefits of foam versus innerspring. Innerspring mattresses support you with coils that exert an equal force opposing the weight placed on them, producing pressure points on the back of the skull, tailbone, shoulder blades and heels. Foam mattresses contour to the entire body, but can make it more difficult to turn and get out of bed. Sleeping on a rigid surface (top)

141

versus a softer surface (bottom) affects the position of your pelvis and lower spine. 3. Consider your body type. If your hips are wider than your waist, a softer mattress can accommodate the width of your pelvis and allow your spine to remain neutral. If your hips and waist are in a relatively straight line, a more rigid surface offers better support. A spring mattress can produce pressure points at the back of the head, the shoulder blades, the tailbone and the heels, and does

not support the curves of the spine at your neck or lower back.

4. Make sure there are enough coils. If you go with an innerspring mattress, more coils mean more support and firmness. The thicker the coil, the firmer the mattress, with heavy-gauge coils providing the most support. There are no magic numbers for coils, but steer clear of mattresses with few of them. They’ll quickly become lumpy.

es mattress life by absorbing maintain mattress shape. Consumer Reports estimates that a new mattress lasts 10 years on a new box spring, but just three to four years on an old box spring. 6. Don’t waste money on expensive upholstery. Fabric layers between your body and the mattress springs. Wool or silk padding over a foam or cotton mattress may feel luxurious. But these layers are easily compressed and can make your mattress feel as though it is sagging long before the springs give out. Foam mattress toppers are inexpensive alternatives that can be changed easily when the foam wears out. And remember – to continue to reap the benefits of a good mattress, keep it in optimal condition and replace it when necessary.
