Identify yourself!

The mattress industry is a huge industry, however, it is sometimes considered as part of the home textile industry and as a part of the furniture sector most other times. In fact, it is too big to be able to squeeze in any of these two. It is the industry itself! This big industry will be very well represented at its own fair in Istanbul, 22-25 October 2015 for the second time. The fair was almost doubled this year. Its premiere edition was a true success but it is now a proven international event as early as its second edition. It has identified itself in Istanbul. The fair has already been an excellent platform to launch and to see the latest technologies, innovative products and latest collections. It brings all professionals of the sleep products industry together and visitors come from all parts of the world especially from the neighboring countries. As the main media sponsor and part of the organizing company we already know that the show attracted especially the interest of those world brands who want to sell to the Turkish market, and those who want to invest in and penetrate into Turkish market. The CEOs of the world mattress industry, top officials, purchasing managers, manufacturers, consumers, domestic and foreign representatives and dealers attend the fair. The Sleepwell Expo Show embraces and brings all collaborators of the sector together. It is a real trade platform for all branches including the main industry, the supply industry, machinery and equipment industrialists. We wish success and lucrative business for all exhibitors and visitors.

New Era in Mattress Exhibitions

PERISCOPE

Ă–nder Honi onderhoni@gmail.com

Except for America and the Central Europe, the mattress industry conducted its activities as a sub-sector of furniture industry. However, the industrialists of the sector have become an independent sector within the last decade. As known ISPA fairs are organized in different states of the USA biennially. The events attract visitors from the Northern and Central America, including Latin American countries and around the world. American customers generally prefer softer and higher mattresses generally. The fabrics of mattresses differ from those of other countries. Besides, flame retardancy standards of America also differ. The culture of mattress changes from country to country. For this reason, we can say that ISPA fairs cannot assume an international position in terms of mattress market penetration. Apart from ISPA, High Point Market and Las Vegas Market are the other significant events of the region. The Central and Western Europe are the two other remarkable mattress markets. Among the major fairs of this region, Interzum Cologne Fair, displaying the latest developments and innovations of the sector, becomes marked with its 60,000 visitors from 150 countries. IMM Cologne is another fair predominantly designed for furniture sector but also for the mattress industry. These fairs target the Euro-

pean markets in particular. Apart from these two fairs of Germany, MeubelBeurs of Belgium, Salon De Meuble of France, Meble Polska of Poland and NBF Bed Show of the United Kingdom are the other major fairs of Europe. Interzum of China particularly focuses on inputs for the mattress industry. Turkey’s ISMOB particularly targets furniture and mattress industry. Based on the facts mentioned above, we can say that SleepTech Magazine, being the specialist publication of the sector, has turned out to be successful from the standpoint of conveying the message of Turkish mattress industrialists. The leading industrialists of the sector and I proposed the idea of establishing a specialist mattress fair. Voli Fair Services Company organized the first one, SleepWell Expo last year. The Fair proved to be an ideal ground for the state-of-the art technologies, innovative products and latest collections of the mattress and supplier industry. Recording a remarkable success in 2014, SleepWell Expo is organized for the second time this year, 22-25 October, at Istanbul Expo Center. I am convinced that SleepWell Expo will pave the way for remarkable business opportunities in European, Asian and African markets. I wish success for all participants of the Fair.

Let’s wake up in Istanbul on October 22! Dear Readers and Valuable Exhibitors and Visitors of Sleepwell Expo,

Ömer Faruk GÖRÜN

Published first in 2011 our publication Sleep Well was so successful that in a short time it forced us to publish a second publication named Sleep Tech, a new publication focused on technical sides of the business. Presenting Turkish mattress and its supply industries to the world markets, these publications have always been at the service of both domestic producers and foreign companies who have interested in the development in Turkish sleep industry. We hope that with our publications and with our activities we will be at the service of our business partners for many years to come. While at the beginning, from the early days of our publication, we had been informing about our dreams of organizing a special fair for mattress and sleep products. Several names in this business, including Onder Honi, Berna Ilter, Mustafa Cetinbulut, Mustafa Nebi Dogan, and others have always encouraged, motivated and supported us with their valuable ideas. At the end of talks, last year we have decided to organize the first and only trade fair focused on sleep products, the Sleep Well Expo, borrowing the name of our publications. We may have act somehow unprepared in the first edition. We had both problems and also excitement for success. In Turkish we have special saying for these cases, something to be translated as “Caravan is made up as it runs along”. As it may be the first but our guests and participating companies were mostly happy when leaving the event. Number of participants was about 50. Their number reached more than a hundred. Many new international companies were with us.

In this special edition of our publication you will find detailed information about participating companies. I had dared to say, “this is the first and the only fair in the world”. I really meant it. There are only a few mattress and supply industries fairs in the world. Some of mattress manufacturers are participating in the fairs focused on furniture industry. However, there is no other event in the world that brings all partners in the mattress and sleep products industry with all their machinery, products, services and components, etc. The fair needs your genuine support for further expansion of the fair. You will find a special interview with Erol Boydak who says, “Sleep Well Expo is really an exciting fair for us. Evteks, Ismob have become the largest fairs in the world. With the potential Turkey has, this event may be a new Interzum in the world. To this end, we, the industrialists, have to extend our powers and contribution in this great investment for Turkish economy. We as companies in this segment, have to be both visitors and participants in this fair. We have been producing the best products and mattresses in the world, why not we have the largest fair in this field?” I appreciate the encouraging words of Erol Boydak. He efficiently reflected our sense and mission. Starting with this issue, I personally will inform about the latest development in our publications, fair activities and in our industry. For now, I say goodbye to you, and welcome to our visitors. Those friends of ours, who could not get a chance to participate in or visit to the fair this year we remind them to take

Boxsprings, as important as mattresses Better Sleep Council has some good advices on buying and using bed bases.

A good foundation, often called a boxspring or adjustable bed base, is as important as a good mattress. The box springs take a lot of the nightly wear and tear and contribute to the bed’s overall comfort and support. Never put a new mattress on an old foundation. When you select your new mattress, buy its companion foundation - the two are designed to work best together. In fact, buying the mattress without its matching foundation may affect the terms of the warranty.

Adjustable Bed Bases An adjustable bed base allows you to customize your mattress position by using a remote control to independently adjust the head and foot of the bed for maximum comfort. Adjustable bed bases are compatible with most innerspring, foam and air mattresses. Since flexing causes extra wear on the mattress, choosing a quality mattress is very important. When you are shopping, be sure to find out whether the mattress you prefer is adjustable-friendly. SOURCE: BETTER SLEEP COUNCIL

Turkish Sleep Medicine Society on insomnia therapy

When patients are examined at sleep laboratory after a day spent in nature, it is determined that their deep slow sleep rate was increased compared to other nights. Turkish Sleep Medicine Society (TUTD) has been undertaking researches and rendering services to the industry in cooperation with universities and has been assuming a pioneering role in Turkey’s sleep medicine with international activities. TUTD has a website to help people to understand sleeping well and to cure the problems they have. The following article is published at the web of the Society offering excellent advices:

Pay attention to the times and duration of sleep! As mentioned in the previous sections, each of us has different sleep time. Although

some of us are satisfied with 5 hours of sleep; some of them need 10 hours even more. The hour when we start sleeping may also change from one person to another. As a result of our previous experiences, all we know what time we need to sleep. For some people, this hour maybe early hours of night; while for other people it is late hours of night. This genetically determined characteristic put into us one of these groups: either “chickens” or “owls”. The first requirement for a healthy sleep is to know our sleeping hours and sleeping times and going to bed and waking up accordingly. However, it is not always possible to follow these usual

16

hours of sleep. Some nights, we wake up more often than usual nights; we face difficulty in falling asleep at night; or we wake up early in the morning. The following night, our organism compensates these negativities. However, prolonging to duration of sleep in the morning in order to compensate this situation may cause other problems. As morning sleep will mainly be consisting of superficial phase of slow sleep, it does not substitute night sleep. Waking up late in the morning will delay the following night’s sleep; therefore it will show itself as difficulty in falling asleep in the following night. One other matter that should be considered in hours of sleep is the afternoon sleep. As it is known, tendency to sleep at noon increases physiologically and affing asleep at hours becomes easier. In this case, should afternoon naps be recommended for insomniacs sturdy? There are two kinds of answers to be given this question. First; even short-term sleep reduces the accumulation of sleep; as it affects homeostatic mechanism and affect to sleep by delaying to fall asleep at night; it should not be recommended for insomniacs. Secondly, we should not block to a physiological event in order to apply a homeostatic rule. If a person already suffers from insomnia and if he needs to sleep, he must be allowed to sleep in the afternoon. However, in this case the patient should be aware of that; night sleep necessity may be felt latee and he should not try to sleep at 22:00 although he already slept 1 hour in the afternoon.

Any drink taken in the evening and known as stimulating also disrupts sleep structure; and makes it difficult to fall asleep.

Get ready for sleep during the day! Most of us spend the daylight hours without doing intense physical activity. Our bodies are used less and we work mainly giving more space to the intellectual activities. Meanwhile, increasing mental activity and eventually brought tension, emerges as a factor which complicates to sleep

However, when patients are examined at sleep laboratory after a day spent in nature, it is determined that their deep slow sleep rate was increased compared to other nights. Performing physical activities in certain days of the week; such as walking, jogging, playing tennis or swim etc. prepares us for a good sleep. However, heavy physical activity such as heavy gymnastic activities –especially

18

have a glass of warm milk or lime while you eat a few biscuits. They will make it easier to fall asleep and provide you a quality of sleep

the activities which stimulate the autonomic nervous system – are not recommended before sleeping or late hours at night because they disrupt the quality of sleep.

Pay attention to the physical conditions of the sleeping environment!

Pay attention to your food and drink! Eating an excessive amount of food in the evening bothers your stomach; therefore it prevents you to have a good sleep. If you have snoring or sleep-related breathing disorder problems; eating excessively in the night makes these problems worse. Excessively taken liquids bother your stomach as well as causing you to wake up at nights frequently in order to satisfy your urination necessity. Consuming alcohol before we going to bed is another factor which affects negatively our sleep.

Organize physical conditions of the sleep environment according to your personal needs.

Also, any drink taken in the evening and known as stimulating also disrupts sleep structure; and makes it difficult to fall asleep. Therefore, an excessive amount of tea, coffee, cola drinks should not be consumed in the evening. Dinner meals should be light and must be eaten a few hours before sleeping time. You can

Although some of us do not feel bothered from noise when they sleep, some of us are affected by the slightest noise and wakes up very often. The persons who developed sensitivity against noise must isolate the environment from noise. Although some of us like to sleep in a hot environment, others prefer to sleep in a cool room. Although personal preferences always change; our knowledge about the physiology of sleep show that; our body temperature is reduced at nights.

20

Light level of room is one of the factors which affect the sleep. While some of us feel bothered from a slightest light, others are scared of sleeping in the dark.

sons who sleep in new beds are compared to the persons who sleep on old bed; it is observed that, the persons who sleep in old beds wake up very often at nights and their deep slow sleep rate is decreased.

Each of us has preferences about hardness of our bed and height of our pillow. Some of us sleep better in hard beds, some of us like soft beds. But sleeping on an old bed adversely affects the sleeping quality of all of us. Therefore, we must change the beds whose center is pushed down and the beds whose wires are dislocated. When the per-

The studies show that sleeping partners affect each other’s sleep. Sleep records show that; partners’ night movements affect to each other; when one of them is moved, another wakes up and although this awakeness is not consciously perceived, it affects sleep quality by making sleep superficial. Therefore, although our traditions require otherwise,

Therefore, a warm or hot bath before sleep will raise our body temperature; and then sleeping in a cool room makes us easier to fall asleep and makes it easier to have a deep sleep. Light level of room is one other factor which affects the sleep.

especially when the couples who suffer sleep disorders in separate beds, they fall asleep easier and they continue to sleep at night easier.

Do not use your bedroom as if it is your living room! Some of us have habits of reading books in the bedroom and even they study in the bedroom. Some of us have

22

habits like eating on the bed and watching television in the bedroom. People generally fall asleep unwillingly while watching television on bed. We fall asleep while TV is on and we wake up after sleeping a little. As this short period of sleep will reduce the pressure of sleep, we would have difficulty on falling asleep again. However, some experts consider that reading a relaxing book before we sleep in bedroom can facilitate to sleep. It is also known that sexual intercourse before bedtime also has different effects on people. It is known that; sexual intercourse facilitate sleeping for some people while it delays falling asleep for other people due to the increase on the level of tension

Limitation of sleep time

The studies conducted mentioned methods in this article showed that patients highly benefited from these treatments.

There is a recently applied and highly successful method in the treatment of insomnia. In our discussions with patients suffering from insomnia we learn that; these patients go to bed early at nights in order to try to sleep and they remain in bed in the mornings; because they could not sleep at night. If we examine sleep diaries of these patients, we observe that these persons spend long time in bed although they sleep for a short time. The rate of sleep time -which

24

is expressed as sleep efficiency- to the time spent in bed is reduced for these patients. The studies conducted in the recent years showed that; reduction of sleep efficiency makes persons to feel as if they did not sleep at all. It is thought that; when the patients’ sleep efficiency is increased; they would wake up as if they slept more and they would be more satisfied with their sleep. Total sleep duration detected in sleep diaries is defined as the patient’s duration of staying in bed. This period of time is subtracted from the patient’s wake-up time in the morning and the patient is allowed to sleep at night only after the calculated time. When you ask “why did you stay 11 hours in bed although you slept only 4 hours?” to a patient who goes to bed at 10 p.m. and sleeps only 4 hours; but wakes up 6 a.m. and remains in bed until 8 a.m.; his answer would be “in order to rest or to sleep more”. When sleeping hours are

limited for these patients, it is aimed to increase sleep efficiency from 40% to 100%. In order to achieve this efficiency, the patient is asked to go to bed at 02.00 a.m. instead of 10.00 p.m. as well as going out of the bed when he wakes up at 06.00 a.m. In the first days of treatment, the patient may feel himself a little tired, but when sleep efficiency is increased, their sleeping time can be extended for 15 minutes of period. The studies conducted on the above mentioned methods showed that patients highly benefited from these treatments. Using these methods, around 5060% of insomnia patients largely solved their sleep problems at the end of six months period. The comparative studies showed that relatively new methods such as stimulant control and sleep time limitation etc. are more successful than the older methods such as relaxation and “biofeedback” etc.

“SLEEP WELL EXPOISTANBUL” opens with grater space and more exhibitors!

There are only a few exhibitions dedicated only to the sleep products industry in the world. There is only one in a big geography covering Turkey, Balkans, East Europe, former Soviet Block countries and Middle East. It is in Istanbul titled “Sleep Well Expo” organized by Voli Fuar and supported by Sleep Well and Sleep Tech magazines. As the Turkish housing construction sector developing very fast and the population is growing faster, new houses are being built at a tremendous number and the need for filling these houses is growing considerably. Sleep products are

among the basic needs of these needs. The industry has been growing also in line with the living conditions of people on the one hand; it has been growing in line with people being more conscious for better sleep products on the other. The Turkish sleep products industry has been prospering fast at all aspects from mattress to machinery, from pillows to quilts, from box spring to headboards. It adapts the latest trends and technologies. As the first and the only fair in its field in Turkey, SLEEP WELL EXPO is a show bringing mattress main

The fair is an excellent platform to launch and to see the latest technologies, innovative products and latest collections. To be held on October 22-25, 2015, the fair was introduced in 2014 and the premiere edition was welcomed very well by the industry. The show brings all professionals of the sleep products industry together and visitors come from all parts of the world especially from the neighboring countries. The fair attracted especially the interest of those world brands who want to sell to the Turkish market, and those who want to invest in and penetrate into Turkish market. the main industry, the supply industry, machinery and equipment industrialists. Turkey is an emerging and stabile market with its fast growing population, advantageous location and developing economy. The mattress industry, mattress machinery and equipment are among the fastest growing sectors in Turkey. The developments experienced in the sector and the innovations, the collaboration among industrialists are the important factors motivating the improvement of the mattress and bedding industry in Turkey. All these positive developments urged a fair in the industry and that’s how SLEEPWELL EXPO show was born. It is held at the opposite side of Istanbul’s most famous international airport,

36

Ataturk International Airport from where you can get the exhibition grounds in a few minutes. It is almost very clear that the fair will be one of the strongest fairs in the bedding industry worldwide in the very near future. The industry imports a lot, too. Turkey is a good market for machinery, some types of mattresses and raw materials. The first and only fair dedicated to the sleep products industry in Turkey, SLEEP WELL EXPO ISTANBUL was held April 17-20, 2014 and recorded a huge success which almost all industry professionals applause. Now the second edition of the fair is shaping up. Over 70% of exhibitors have already booked their spaces according to the officials of Voli Fair Organization, the organizers of the show. The fair was scheduled to be at the same venue but instead of 2 halls and the big foyer, there will be an extra hall at the second edition, October 22-25, 2015. Stating that the fair attracted a great deal of interest from domestic market and by companies from different countries, Omer Faruk Gorun, Project Manager of Sleep Well Expo outlined, “Sleep Well Expo covers the mattress main
industry, sub industry, machinery and equipment. The venue of this important fair is Istanbul Expo Center, which is exactly facing the Istanbul Ataturk International Airport. When an exhibitor or a visitor arrives at Istanbul by air, he or she could even walk to the exhibition ground. The first edition of this annual event was held in April 17-20, 2014. As the first of its kind in Turkey, Sleep Well Expo

contributes to Turkey’s being a production hub for the mattress industry. Sleep Well Expo is now hosting a professional platform where the latest technologies and products are on display altogether. Because of ever increasing value of mattress and other sleep products the fair has been an important organization to bring once again
leading companies and reps of the industry together. Many international companies doing business with Turkey in this industry have already shown their interest in the fair which will bring together CEOs, top level officials, purchasing managers, producers, consumers, foreign and domestic
dealers and representatives. Product groups of the fair include Turkish mattress producers, mattress importers, furniture and mattress stores, foreign mattress producers, sub-industry products, mattress and quilting machinery and equipment, etc.
The visitor portfolio includes experts and high-level officials of the private sector, buyers from different sectors to realize projects, businessmen, investors, mattress industry authorities, dealers
and representatives, chambers of commerce, associations, furniture manufacturers, purchasing officials of tourism, hotel and hospitality industry, etc.”

European consumers perceptions and expectations toward mattresses Bekaert Textiles, a Belgian professional company in the industry, supplied the following info based on a comprehensive survey of European Bedding Industries’ Association.

1- A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP How important is a good night’s sleep? 98% agree that quality sleep is essential to a good quality of life. This majority says that a good night’s sleep is ridiculously important and can affect everything in your day-to-day life. It is fundamental for my life, to rest and have a good day. WHAT PREVENTS A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP? When aided, stress, wrong temperatures and the quality of the bed/mattress are key barriers. Q: What do you think are the main factors that disturb your sleep?

WHICH IS THE BEST MATTRESS TECHNOLOGY? Memory foam is perceived as the best by most, followed by latex and spring technologies Q: According to you, which technology is the best fitted today for a good mattress?

71

Increasingly consumers understand it is both the mattress and bed base that matters. Consumers have 3 main expectations regarding a mattress: Good for the back, a good night’s sleep, degree of firmness. Latex and especially foams are preferred for their comfort and perceived quality. Spring mattresses are regarded as trustworthy.

Sleep – waste of time or welcome respite? Better Sleep Council research shows Americans are torn on feelings about sleep

Research recently conducted by the Better Sleep Council (BSC) shows Americans are conflicted about sleep. The survey found that a large majority of people understand that sleep is necessary to recharge, restore and refresh. However, when asked about their feelings toward sleep, their answers become more complex and polarized. The survey, administered during April 2015 in support of the BSC’s

annual “May is Better Sleep Month” campaign, shows that the way sleep is framed influences the way people feel about it. When asked about how important sleep is, only 2 percent view sleep as a waste of time. But negative feelings become more prominent when people are told how much of their lives are spent asleep. For example, when told they will spend an average of one-third of their lives sleeping, 15 percent of respondents felt negatively about

74

the amount of time spent “wasted” on sleep – despite the fact that this is the typical biological requirement. And when told that they will have slept for roughly 20 years by the time they reach age 60, a total of 33 percent of respondents were dismayed that they were “about to waste 20 years” of their life or said they “never want to sleep again.” “The research clearly shows that what we understand about sleep versus how we feel about it is polarizing – and that has profound ramifications on how Americans treat the importance of sleep,” said Mary Helen Uusimaki, BSC vice president of marketing and communications. “Spending onethird of your life sleeping is not a negative; it’s a biological need. Those that feel time is being wasted on sleep will more likely cheat themselves of the seven

to nine hours they need to make their waking hours more healthy, productive and enjoyable.” According to the research, Millennials are significantly more likely to feel that spending 20 out of 60 years sleeping is a waste of time (30 percent), compared to Generation X (23 percent) and Baby Boomer (21 percent) respondents. That number rises when examining male responses only – 34 percent of Millennial males feel the time is wasted, compared to Generation X males (18 percent) and Baby Boomer males (20 percent). A possible reason for this difference is the desire for younger people to experience the here and now to its fullest, as captured by the popular slogan, “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.” “Negative attitudes about sleep can be linked to what other experts have concluded – that

a primary cause of excessive sleepiness among Americans is self-imposed sleep deprivation,” said Terry Cralle, R.N., certified clinical sleep educator and BSC health and wellness spokesperson. “Health professionals should be concerned that Americans may think of sleep as a waste of time, when in fact, chronic sleep deprivation can lead to serious health issues, including heart disease, obesity, stroke and dementia.” There is some hope, however, as 33 percent of respondents have no concerns about spending one-third of their lives sleeping – the statement evokes positive feelings, and they consider sleep worthy of that much of their time. Another 24 percent feel it’s necessary to recharge. However, half of respondents struggling to fall asleep, unfortunately, turn to the television for help – a method

76

sleep experts discourage. What should they try instead? The Better Sleep Council recommends starting with these five tips: 1 Make sleep a priority. Keep a consistent sleep and wake schedule – even on the weekends. If necessary, try adding sleep to your to-do list. And don’t be late. 2 Maintain a relaxing sleep routine. Adjust a bedtime routine that relaxes you. Experts recommend reading a book, listening to soothing music or soaking in a hot bath. 3 Generate a sleep sanctuary. Your bedroom should be a haven of comfort. Make a room that is dark, quiet, comfortable and cool for the best sleep possible. Consider a bedroom makeover. 4 Evaluate your sleep system. Your mattress and pillow should provide full comfort and support. Your bed and your body will naturally change over time, so if your mattress is seven years old (or older), it may be time for a new one. Pillows should generally be replaced every year. 5 Banish technology. Television, smartphones, tablets, laptops and computers should be kept out of the bedroom. Intense backlighting of electronics triggers stimulating chemicals in the brain that tell your body it’s time to be awake.

es, doing good job and producing quality products.

On activities of the company

Customers have priority of having sets for bedrooms, youth rooms and living rooms, leaving bases behind. The products we produced are used daily while other are utilized once in a while. Bases should be robust and durable.

Four brothers began to produce differentiated bases in 2012 and prepared a product portfolio that addresses to the buyers in Europe. Unlike other base producing companies who go out of business in a year or two, they have become successful by keeping their promis-

exported to markets in Germany, Libya, Greece and others. We want to be active in many countries as possible. We committed ourselves to perfection, progress, innovation, quality and being a trusted supplier for our buyers.

On production facilities and investments We produce 200 bases and 75 beds and head steads daily. Production facility is ever growing. Lately, we acquired rollpack machinery to press mattresses while packing. Now we can haul more than 300 mattresses on a truck. Earlier, we can only load 150 to 200 mattresses. It reduced cost of transport. First vacuumed to about

8 cm. from its normal size of 30-35 cm, the mattresses then roll over and made ready to delivery. They are especially advantageous for export deliveries.

On R&D activities It is important. We have a team of research and development. They design new products, getting feedback and produce pilot products. We have about a dozen of different models in our product line. Three kinds of springs, bonnel, pocked and Hercules types are used in our mattresses. We have also standard types. We also are able to make changes in our products demanded by our customers

in foreign countries. They may demand for softer felts.

On export markets and targeted countries We have business ties with customers in Germany, Holland, in other European countries, in Middle East, etc. Instead of proliferating our markets we want to penetrate more and expand our distribution network in the markets we have already in. That is sufficient for our production capacity. When we have additional machinery towards the end of 2016 production volume will be higher.

AE&Premus Betten, a new but experienced company for Europe

Ersan Madeni has started mattress manufacturing for Europe with its new brand AE&Premus Betten. Starting with Germany, the brand has an intention to sell to all Europe in a short time. Continuing its operations for 30 years by supplying movable systems for Turkey and a lot of countries, Ersan Madeni has combined its experience with mattresses. Pointing out that they started to manufacture for those who want quality sleep, Aynur Erman, owner of AE&Premus Betten, spoke to Sleep Well about the feedbacks of their

customers and gave the details of their success:

How did the Premus brand come out? What is the story of it? For over 30 years Ersan has been serving in the bedding sector. Before it was in a position of providing and supplying metal parts and accessories of production for large enterprises and organizations. Engaged in the manufacture and sale of finished products like metal bed, nightstand, folding

89

Rendering services to the mattress industry for 30 years, Ersan Madeni has started mattress manufacturing with AE&Premus Betten for Europe.

bed, bunkbed. But in 2011 after the start of operation in the Free Zone it made the transition to the production of soft groups. Here professionally continues to produce for the bedding sector. The idea of opening store and to realize in Germany belongs to the owner Aynur Erman. And the brand name Primus in Latin means “ First” “ First Quality” and the A&E logo design consists of Aynur Erman’s initials.

How was the reaction of the sector for this new brand? They showed a great interest both in brand and product quality and aesthetic design. Every moment we continue to receive positive feedbacks. Due to these improvements and major interest we are very pleased.

What kind of mattresses have you been manufacturing? Can you give us details about your new mattresses? In this sector we produce different

designed orthopedic properties, high level of comfort and providing stylish boxspring and adjustable beds for all age groups; young, adult and advanced age. Multi adjustable boxsprings, motor beds with remote control, pull back and sliding system beds with led lights and tv lift boxbases. Equipped and using with Pocket spring and hygienic fabric beds, viscose foam and gel toppers and smart sleeping systems. Unlike their counterparts in the market the frames and cases including the mechanisms are made of solid metal plate and produced with own style and capability.

Are you planning to sell other countries or regions except Germany where you are already selling? The adjustable Boxspring Systems were not common in Global Market. But, the boxsprings and Adjustable Bed sector is at a faster growth compared to the normal mattress industry. At the beginning it was much more com-

90

mon and familiar in countries; Holland, Germany, Belgium, Sweden, England and USA. But now we have also customers in Israel, Kenya, Greece, Hungary, Luxembourg and Bosnia and Herzigovina. Especially this high level of comfort Adjustable Boxsprings which are popular in Europe, will spread to other continents over time. Because we can see the results in the local and international fairs which we participate. Now we see demand from the Arab countries, that we asking 3-4 years ago if this was a medical bed. Our aim is to sale the most orthopedic, well style beds all over the World. And to make the brands “Ersan” and “ A&E” in Europe a well known and reliable name. And is to bring our unusual, unique and innovative products to everone.

How do you undertake your R&D studies? We know the importance of R&D and innovation for a company. And we continue our unremitting efforts in this direction. In R&D activities we usually focus on where we are experienced in metal subjects. We move with the idea of “How we increase the comfort of people” In this respect we carry out the R&D activities. We are making further improvements on our products

91

in accordance with demands from the people in the fair and business trips. For example, now we are carrying out R&D working on a system that people can go or lay more easily on a bed

What would you say about mattress production in Turkey? Since it is a hygienic product, how should it be properly manufactured? Sleep culture is not an invention of modern times. Up to this very day its nature is a mystery and we still don’t really understand its function and effect. But, one thing is certain: sleep is very important in our Daily life. At the moment the adjustable beds are not so common in Turkey. But, on the interest we have seen in the local exhibition we can say that for the next 2-3 years also from Turkey we will have much demands. Now, people do not use the bed only for sleeping. When reading a book, watching TV they spend their time in bed. And we have seen in Turkey that Boxsprings and Adjustable beds have also a popularity and interest. Making Dream Beds of top processing quality for people with high expectations. This has been a requirement for top qualified adjustable beds. So, in the coming years the adjustable, high comfort beds will replace the normal beds in Turkey, as well as in Europe.

What else would you like to underline? Our primary goal is to expand Ersan’s and A&E’s market share in the bedding industry and to raise the bar. Rather than the general requirements demanded by the sector, make more extraordinary, elite, ergonomic products that provides luxury and comfort level high quality sleep.

Will we only see these mattresses on the domestic market? Do you have plans to export? The B-mix brand was created to be active in the domestic and shop in shop market. We are not considering expanding into the foreign market at this time.

You will be participating in the Sleepwell Expo. What is your objective in this fair and what are your thoughts about the fair? This will be the first exhibition for our brand. This is why we are experiencing a different kind of excitement. Our most important expectation is to meet potential business partners towards increasing the recognition of our brand and sales locations.

brand, Bucca, as a result of our 8 months’ endeavor. Every detail of the product have been retouched from raw materials to fabrics and labels.

You said you produce natural mattresses and sleep products. Would you furnish us about your products and production?

What else did you change in your products?

We have developed a new concept and new design rather different from other products in the market. The concept is made by combining country style with sleep needs. We produce visco, latex and organic mattresses. We will get the actual response of buyers and customers in the fair. We re-establish our

We make bedsteads out of massive spruce wood; we use oak in the mosquito nets. In short all are made of natural materials. We are about to sign contracts. We

collection

design sleep centers of 150 sqm in these shops under Bucca brand.

There is limited number of companies producing similar products in your segment. What distinguish your products from them? We produce mattresses at more affordable price levels. Companies sell their products at 10 to 15 thousand lira. We support our dealers by offering them architectural services to design their stores. There are limited firms in Istanbul that produce similar items. They sell the products at higher prices because they are located at prestigious streets such as Bagdat, Istinye and

106

Etiler. They charge their prices depending on the purchasing power of their customers.

What is the position of organic mattress manufacturing in Turkey? What are the differences? There are really good companies in America and in Europe. Some of them make high quality mattresses out of horsehairs. We use the same material in our products. We buy coconut fibers and horsehairs from Holland. Latex comes from Italy. We buy cotton and wools from the best producers. Some companies in Turkey produce similar mattresses on automatic machinery, however we make our products on boutique style. For us, it is highly satisfactory to produce 50 mattresses a day. This is our target. We do not sell mattresses of 200 to 300 liras. Our products are at highest quality, more expensive, and made of special materials

What was the response of your consumers to these products? Most are satisfied. Organic has become a popular concept in recent years. People have to be more familiar with this concept. Customers should be aware of the fact that horsehair may show up beneath the cover of the mattress and the surface may not be so smooth as other standard mattresses. Actually, 8 kilogram of natural materials

either wool or cotton are spread out on the mattress. Our products will bear about 25 years of guarantee.

What is your opinion on SleepWell Expo? We have visited the fair last year. Actually we did not participate in it, because we are so busy. Our customers suggested that we should take part in these kinds of activities. So, we will be at Sleepwell Expo this year, with an aim to introduce our brand in the country. First we will make a presentation to other producers, furniture and raw material suppliers. There may be orders from foreign markets, however, our target is first to serve in domestic market.

The ‘bed’ product group is growing

Heimtextil is expanding its offer of mattresses, bedding and bed systems. Renowned new exhibitors join returning companies to unveil new sleeping products at the international trade fair for home and contract textiles (12 to 15 January 2016). Overall, Heimtextil sees growth in the ‘bed’ product group, which is made up of the areas of bed linen, bedding, duvets, decorative pillows and mattresses.

for Heimtextil. The trade fair is distinguished by its comprehensive product portfolio in the ‘bed’ sector. It serves as an optimal platform for the mattress industry, especially because of the strong visitor interest. Nearly one in five visitors at Heimtextil 2015 was interested in mattresses, sleeping systems and bedding,” states Meike Kern, Director of Household Textiles at Heimtextil.

“We are delighted that leading representatives of the international mattress industry have opted

After over ten years away, Rössle & Wanner is back at the event with a special exhibition. The

111

Swabian company has had over one hundred years of success in producing bed systems and beds for the European market. ‘There is hardly any other sector that is as international as the textile industry. This is one reason why we participate in Heimtextil. Above all, however, it’s because this is where the entire specialist trade meets,’ explains Manfred Greiner, Managing Director Rössle & Wanner. In Gallery 1, Rössle & Wanner will be using its Röwa brand to address a wide range of topics.

Alongside a historical exhibition, innovative designs and sustainably produced articles will be displayed, in addition to attractive concepts for the POS. ‘We are pleased to be represented at Heimtextil. The special exhibition aims to unveil new inventions to the sector, whilst also offering a communicative platform for the exchange of knowledge,’ adds Greiner.

Focus on mattresses Individuality, growing health awareness and sustainability

dominate the mattress industry. Textile digital printing, for instance, enables completely unique bed design. At the same time, companies manufacture bed systems using recycled fibers and wood from sustainable forestry. Box spring beds remain firmly in fashion. Embellished by the addition of bed linen, covers and accessories, these beds catch the eye with their strikingly opulent look. Numerous companies from the international mattress industry will be presenting these trends and much more at Heimtextil.

112

Another prestigious returnee to Heimtextil this year is f.a.n. Frankenstolz. The German-based company will present its new products for mattresses and quilts. The exhibitor has particular praise for the new fair schedule. ‘From our point of view, one of the reasons that Heimtextil has become more attractive to exhibitors is because it has brought the date forward by a day,’ says Eberhard Künstler, Director of f.a.n. Frankenstolz. ‘We have also found that especially our customers from abroad are extremely dedicated about visiting Heimtextil. This trade fair is therefore of great importance for our export business.’ Just a few months before Heimtextil, spirits within the industry remain high. ‘We view current market developments for mattresses and bed systems extremely positively. Consumers are increasingly willing to invest in high-quality mattresses and bed systems, and are developing more awareness of quality. Our brand obviously benefits from this, too,’ states Frank Gänser, Director of Brinkhaus GmbH. The premium bedding manufacturer has been represented at the fair since 2012. ‘For us, Heimtextil is one of the most important trade fairs, especially when it comes to bedding.’ Visitors can discover the entire range of textiles in the ‘bed’ area in halls 8 to 11. Renowned manufacturers will present the perfect combination of bedspreads, pillows, bed linen, mattresses and bed systems. The sleeping campaign in Gallery 0 will also offer comprehensive information on the topic of “good sleep”.

Elit Yatak, a new player in mattress market

Started to produce visco and spring type mattresses and pillows at the beginning of the year, Elit Yatak has three stores in Ankara. Having 20 years of experience in medical products the company has added sleep products to its product portfolio. Hatice Hayyaoglu, general manager of the company informed about her company, export targets and on SleepWell Hatice HayyaoÄ&#x;lu, General Manager of Elit Medikal

Expo fair.

Brief info about your company Actually we have three companies in our group: Elit Medika, Istem Medikal and Matek Medikal. We started in the medical industry 20 years ago as Istem Medikal, with my husband Levent Hayyaoglu. We entered mattress manufacturing

115

and selling business this year. We are now at the beginning of a long way. We have an experienced and knowledgeable staff in the factory. We want to grow with all our products. Ten years ago we started to import and export of medical products.

What kind of mattresses and products do you produce? Most of our products are in the chemical field. For this reason visco products were more attractive for us. Following one year of R & D study, we launched visco and than spring type mattresses. Then we opened three stores to sell our products in Ankara. We are happy of sales we made in short a period. We aim to open 5 more stores in Ankara.

What are your expectations from SleepWell fair that you have participated for the first time? We want to export our mattresses as well as other chemical products we produced. With this aim, we are going to participate in the fair and want to establish promising contacts. Besides, we want to observe the developments, new products and the companies in the fair.

What type of mattresses and sleep products do you produce? We produce visco, orthopedic spring, orthopedic visco and spring type of mattresses, besides visco quilts and pillows. We started studies to produce springs for mattress production. Presently we have only spring arrangement machinery. Other equipment will follow suit.

We have cutting and closing machinery, and moved a new factory in Ankara organized industrial zone, having a working space of 2 thousand sqm.

What is the position of Turkish mattress industry in the country and in the world? I do not think that the industry is mature enough to produce health products of this kind. We aimed to improve the production base in the country. Production must be carried out by experts and professionals, because it is a serious business, because it is closely related with health issues. We have some deficiencies, however, we aim to

produce right mattress for the right people.

What do you plan to offer your customers as of a mattress producer? Medical products are produced by people who are acting as if in a space base. They have to be covered from head to toe, outfits to gloves. Air must be cleaned and sterilized, processes have to be carried out in clean rooms. We do all these in the mattress manufacturing as well. We are also keen on the workspaces of staff and the health of products until they are delivered to customers.

What happens while Sleeping?

116

Everyone’s desire is to have an incessant sleep though it is rather hard to achieve. Preventing bodily movements during sleep may increase the chance for better sleep. There are several candidates to solve the problem. People live two kinds of sleep, called Rem and Non-rem, during night by passing through for different phases of it. Energy system of the body is refreshed; neural, immune and skeleton systems rest. According to scientists, different phases of sleep supports different functions of memory.

Sleep is vitally important Rem (deep) sleep is know as supporting to unconscious learning, helps to overcome the difficulties of realities and solutions. Sleep is a physical necessity for all livings. Rejuvenating of the body needs sleeping. Insomnia is hazardous for immune system and learning and memory functions.

Body supporting application Special materials such as Tempur are considered a revolution in sleep. It proved that mattresses should not be either hard or soft, what is import-

117

ant for better sleep is to remove pressing points causing pains and to prove the right form and position of the body needed. It reduces the movements during sleep by reacting both hardly and softly at every point where needed.

Clinically tested Reduction of movements during sleep on Tempur mattresses have been clinically tested and approved. In these tests, it was observed that these mattresses reduce the bodily pressure as much as and even more than the high technology, high priced mattresses. Thus patients have lesser pains and

deeper sleep cycles. Medical experts advice to their patients of sleep, who have also joints and back pains, to use this products.

Pressure reducing characteristic Tempur products are used in hospitals, care and sleep centers in many parts of the world. The formula used in these mattresses and pillows is regarded as the best solution in sleep technology. The specific material was first developed by Nasa in its Ames research center in 1970’s to prevent the hazards of G pressure subject to astronauts. It provides a perfect resting opportunity for the body.

Largest-ever Summer Las Vegas Market exceeds expectations Launches of five new destinations, increased registration and buyer attendance at Summer 2015 event, August 2-6, 2015

119

LAS VEGAS – The largest-ever Las Vegas Market – highlighted by increases in new registrations and overall attendance, as well as expansion of leading showroom resources and the debut of five new resource destinations – exceeded buyer and supplier expectations, August 2-6, 2015. The Summer 2015 Market celebrated its 10th year with five launches: Casual/ Outdoor on C12 and 13; gourmet housewares on C11, better home décor on C5; and the Pavilions at Las Vegas Market featuring DISCOVERIES, a new temporary exhibit venue with 90,000 net square feet of exhibit space. Las Vegas Market is the most comprehensive furniture, home décor and gift market in the United States, presenting a unique cross-section of 2,700+ resources in an unrivaled market destination. With two markets each year, retailers and designers can shop a broad assortment of product from thousands of manufacturers of furniture, mattress, lighting, decorative accessories, floor coverings, home textiles, tabletop, general gift and more — delivering the

most complete, cross-category wholesale tradeshow for the furniture, home décor and gift industries in the United States. “We set the bar high for our tenth anniversary this August, and we exceeded our customers’ expectations, as well as our own,” said Robert Maricich, chief executive officer of IMC. “We launched five new destinations simultaneously, introduced new-to-market

showroom resources and debuted major showroom expansions by leading vendors like Christopher Guy, Global Views, The Phillips Collection, Michael Aram, Ivystone/CMA and many more. We have made exponential progress towards our goal of becoming the only ‘whole home and gift’ market in North America, and anticipate continued and remarkable growth as we continue to build upon our strong foundation.”

120

Overall attendance at the recent Summer Las Vegas Market was up 5% over last summer, and gift continued its double-digit, year-over-year growth with a 17% increase over last Summer. Since Las Vegas Market’s gift and home décor strategic plan was launched in Summer 2012, gift and home décor attendance has grown 180%. Buyers indicating an interest in Housewares/Gourmet in support of the C11 launch were up 61% over last Summer and casual buyers were up 50% over last Summer supporting the new outdoor floors on C12 and 13. The largest growth states for buyer attendance this market were again from the west and southwest, including California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and Texas. Even more important than the attendance numbers is the feedback from tenants and exhibitors that were experiencing good traffic, exposure to new customers and strong order writing at the market.

LVM cements its position as THE national bedding market with signing long-term leases of Serta, Simmons, Fashion Bed Group (A Leggett & Platt Company), Symbol Mattress, Magniflex, Glideaway, Knickerbocker and more mattress manufacturers to join over 100 companies.

C5 “It has been phenomenal and the response exceeds all of our expectations and orders are totally bananas,” said Mark Sage, owner of Bobo Intriguing Objects. “We came into the summer show with our eyes wide open and we are overwhelmed. Many West Coast buyers just shop this show and we needed that visibility. We foresee Las Vegas being THE Show. The Market is gaining momentum every show and we are glad to be part of it.”

Casual/Outdoor “This has been the biggest win for us; we have had an unbelievably successful Market,” said Steve Baut, Stocking Dealer Manager with Polywood All Weather Furnishings. “Since this was our first Las Vegas Market we didn’t know what to expect and this Market has surpassed any expectations we could have imagined. We’ve been able to touch base with

121

dealers we’ve wanted to see and we’re extremely excited to see what happens in January. This has been the best Market for reaching new dealers. About 80% of the dealers we’ve seen are new to our brand.”

Pavilions “We had the best first day ever at a trade show on Sunday and we are at a lot of shows,” said Kelly Stevens, owner, Fab Funky. “Monday also was strong with some repeat customers, but also 99% new clients. January was our first Las Vegas show, and summer market has brought a 50% increase, with orders three times the size of winter. We covered our costs on day one. We are seeing buyers from all over the US.”

C11 “We are seeing an upward trend in Las Vegas,” explained Amy Johnson, vice president, DII Catalog Sales-Design Imports. “IMC has put lots of effort and energy into attracting good buyers. The C11 launch marketing was help-

122

ful to us. There is a good mix of buyers here – small independent gift shops, plus the members of HTI and Gourmet Catalog – from West of Mississippi, with lots of southwest and northwest (WA, OR), as well as KY and TX buyers that couldn’t make other shows. We’ve met a lot of new retailers, and buyers attending in lieu of other regional markets because Las Vegas is comfortable to shop.” Buyers at the recent market recognized the growth in depth and breadth of products providing a comprehensive buying experience for anyone in the gift and home industries. “Summer Las Vegas Market was fantastic – very productive for our team,” agreed Niraj Shah, CEO, and Mike O’Hanlon, Vice President Business Development & Buying for Wayfair. The Casual/Outdoor launch on floors 12 & 13 in building C was awesome! We also

love how densely populated ALL the buildings are becoming with exhibitors.” Wendell Wo, owner of C S Wo & Sons, commented that this Summer Market was “productive and always enjoyable! Over the last few years, Las Vegas Market has evolved into being a relevant and cutting-edge market. Getting more and more important suppli-

ers to exhibit AND introduce new collections has made attending Las Vegas Market very important. And, of course, no one can beat Vegas in coordinating a smooth, well run convention with lots of after hour offerings!” Las Vegas Market is the leading furniture, home decor and gift marketplace in the western U.S., presenting 2,700 gift, home décor

and furniture resources in an unrivaled market destination. Las Vegas Market features thousands of gift, furniture and home décor lines, allowing for cross-category commerce among these industries. Winter Las Vegas Market runs January 24-28, 2016.

What is a latex mattress? What is the use of it in human health and sleep quality? Latex is a natural material obtained from a tropical plant. After processed by using latest technology this is used in the production

of mattresses. Having air channels in it, the material balanced the humidity level of the body that perspires. It prevents bacteria production and with high anatomical and orthopedic characteristics takes the form of body, and distributes pressure evenly. In addition to natural materials, the 7 zone systems have 7 different pressures for head, back, belly, and legs. The mattress touches the body at every point and provides a perfect comfort and support.

Importance of a good sleep and mattress for overall health

No matter what your age, sleeping well is essential to your physical health and emotional well-being. For seniors, quality sleep is particularly essential due to its impact on concentration, memory and its restorative qualities. Sleep can help the body try to mend cell damage that occurred during the day and it can refresh the immune system, which helps prevent disease and infection. Along with good nutrition and exercise, sleep is now recognized as an important contributor to good health. Lack of

sleep and poor quality sleep contribute to depression, poor concentration, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Many health practitioners consider sleep to be a barometer of a person’s health, like taking one’s temperature. Seniors and their adult caregivers that do not get quality sleep are more likely to have an increased chance of depression, memory problems, faulty judgment and excessive drowsiness. They are also more likely to suffer falls, have a lower pain threshold and use more prescription or over-the-counter sleep aids.

129

Insufficient sleep can also lead to an increased risk of restless leg syndrome, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, weight problems and breast cancer in women. Sleep is particularly important for women. Some chronic conditions affecting sleep are more common in women, including osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue

syndrome. When combined with hormonal changes from the child rearing process and menopause (after which the rates of sleep apnea in women triple), women deal with added challenges to attain quality sleep. It is also associated with mental illness, road deaths, and reduced productivity costing an unacceptably high volume of expenses to

the economy. Research shows that around 1 in 3 people suffer from poor quality sleep and one important factor that contributes to a good night’s sleep is the right mattress. Considering we spend around one third of our life in bed it is worth doing some research into getting it right. The right mattress needs to be comfortable whist still being firm

130

enough to provide good postural alignment. Its length should be at least 15cm longer than the tallest person using the bed. This means that you need to try the mattress in store and it is important that both you and your partner are content that the mattress provides comfort and support. This may be problematic for some couples who vary significantly in weight. Some mattress models come with differing comfort layers on each side of the bed and this may be a viable option for such couples. The most common mistakes people make when choosing a mattress? • Don’t test the mattresses at the end of a day’s shopping – everything will feel comfortable! • When testing the mattress try rolling over. If it is difficult to turn it may be too soft, if uncomfortable on the hips or shoulders it may be too firm. Things to consider when buying a mattress Your sleep position is also important when choosing your mattress. •Firm mattress tops are best suited if you sleep mostly on your back or stomach, giving you the proper comfort and support • Plush layers work best for helping sooth pressure points throughout your body as you sleep • Pillowtop mattress layers are constructed of material soft enough to let your body sink in and are particularly suited to side sleepers Make sure the base you have at home is similar to the base in the display room, as a mattress

can feel very different on another base. There are four main types of mattress: • Continuous or open-coil mattress – Often more affordable but less durable than pocket springs. The springs move as one unit so tossing and turning can disturb your partner. • Memory foam mattress – These mattresses are topped with a layer of memory foam which takes pressure off joints as you sink into the foam. The downside is that it can feel too warm for some. • Latex foam mattress – Tend to be durable and the materials

breathe, so they are a good option for those prone to allergies (except latex!) and dust mites and there is less chance of overheating. These mattresses have a solid feel and they can be cumbersome to move due to their weight. Cheaper versions can get lumpy after a time. • Pocket-sprung mattress – a pocket-sprung mattress has up to 3000 springs sewn into individual fabric pockets. They can be customized to have two sides, of different firmness. They offer good support by distributing your body weight evenly, and will support two people of

131

two different body weights well because the springs are separate. The open-spring construction allows air to circulate. The springs can be customized to different tensions – soft, medium or firm. They can be heavy to turn and natural materials such as lamb’s wool can exacerbate allergies. Restless sleep, frequently waking up and not feeling rested

or being plain tired during the day are better indications of not getting enough quality sleep at night. Also, infection, viral issues or other emergent health conditions can affect sleep, and if the disturbance in sleep and/or other physiological pattern changes are identified proactively and early enough, the issue can be addressed and further problems prevented.

Naturepedic goes “Beyond Certified

133

Naturepedic is ready for Las Vegas Market in July, an industry show where companies showcase their latest and greatest offerings in furniture, home décor and gifts. To see surprising offerings of Naturepedic, visit booth C-1565. The biannual Las Vegas Market is a whopper of a show: picture some 50,000 or more buyers for the stores you know and many you don’t arriving from all over the country, even world, to decide the products their stores will carry. It’s big. For the July show, Naturepedic debuts its Beyond Certified campaign to educate retailers about the clever innovations and product variety offered in our adult organic mattresses, which, on top of everything are independently certified organic to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). Not only do its mattresses earn GOTS certification, but so does their entire manufacturing facility. “That gives us bragging rights. The Beyond Certified campaign works toward two goals. One is to reinforce the importance of GOTS certification, which separates organic products like ours from those making hollow ‘green’ claims. Another goal is to flaunt how Naturepedic is bringing a fresh approach back to organic mattresses, which for years was stuck in a latex-only funk,” says an official of Naturepedic. “We do make amazing GOTS-certified all organic latex mattresses, but we

do a lot more. Regarding latex, we are the only organic mattress manufacturer exclusively using latex certified to the Global Organic Latex Standard, or GOLS.” Latex is great, but many people enjoy the cooler sleep offered from the increased airflow afforded by coils or simply don’t want an all-foam mattress, organic or not. Naturepedic provides a variety of GOTS-certified designs to make them very happy. Not only does the company offer organic latex foam top comfort layers atop organic cotton fabric encased coils for a best of both worlds design, it also provides latex-free models with comfy encased comfort coils for luxurious latex-free comfort. Fresh also means doing things differently, like offering an organic sleep system that lets you customize your layers. Naturepedic’s EOS™ brings a European flair to organic mattresses with a modern look, and allows customers to realize their own dream mattresses, even with different firmness levels on each side of the bed for sleep partners with clashing preferences. That’s something you just don’t see in typical organic mattresses! And that’s the point of Beyond Certified. “At Naturepedic we are not typical. We are constantly innovating, developing and offering creative new approaches to organic mattresses and accessories made with healthier materials, but always with a dedication to old-fashioned quality. I guess we’re just an old-fashioned, non-traditional trendsetting innovator of healthier, safer, more comfortable mattresses! It’s fun to brag sometimes,” the official takes pride.

The pillows, crucial for quality sleep 134

Better Sleep Council provides useful information about pillows, an inseparable part of a bed Just as your bed should provide good support for your body, your pillow should give you the right cushioning to position your head and neck properly. It should hold your head in the same relation to your shoulders and spine as if you were standing with correct upright posture. If you sleep on your side, you may want a fairly firm pillow to give your head and neck extra support. If you sleep on your back, try a medium-firm pillow to cradle your head with more “give.” And if you sleep on your stomach (although some physicians caution against this position), choose a soft pillow to lessen the strain on your neck. Today’s consumer has access to a wide variety of pillows at a variety of price points. Shopping for the right pillow is an essential part of building your perfect sleep system.

135

The timeframe for how long a pillow can be used often depends on the quality of the pillow. Generally, pillows should be replaced every year, but some pillows may wear faster than others. A simple test to determine if your pillow needs to be replaced is to fold your pillow in half (thirds for larger

pillows) squeezing out the air. In general, when you release the pillow it should spring back into its original shape and fullness. If it doesn’t, then it’s likely time for a new one.

you should consider replacing your pillow.

Additionally, pillows can show signs of wear and tear over time. If you notice the following signs,

• Feels lumpy and bumpy

• No longer feels the way you did when you first bought it • Shows visible signs of dirt

Additional customs duty to please home textiles sector The surcharge imposed on imports will have a positive affect on the Turkish home textile industry, too. With a new decision on import taxes an additional 50% duty has been imposed on imports of bedcovers, quilts and pillows. Yasar Kucukcalik, President of Turkish Home Textile Industrialists’ and Businessmen’s Association (TETSIAD), said that the cheap products coming from the Far East will not influence the production and this would generate a considerable amount of added value and employment. The additional duty imposed with the purpose of limiting imports will provide positive results for the home textile sector.

Yasar Kucukcalik commented, “Imports will be reduced with this new initiation and the sector will increase production capacity and there will be millions of dollars of added value with this new tax imposed 50% on bedcovers, quilts and pillows.”

Yasar Kucukcalik President of TETSIAD

As of May 25, 2015, the products imported from all countries except EU members, EFTA members, Israel, Macedonia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Morocco, Western Bank and Gaza Strip, Tunis, Egypt, Georgia, Albania, Jordan, Chili, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, South Korea and Mauritius, are imposed 50% surcharge to support domestic industry.

Thanks to Charlene, the quality of your little ones’ sleep is “very good” 140

BÖNNIGHEIM - Numerous studies show how important sleep is for children’s mental development. For example, children who had a sleep deficit at the age of 2.5 years performed less well in tests of mental development at the age of six than those who had no such deficit. (Associations Between Sleep Duration Patterns and Behavioral/ Cognitive Functioning at School Entry (Touchette, Petit, Séguin, Boivin, Tremblay, Montplaisir). Comfortable bedding is one very important factor in having a long and relaxing sleep. Sleeping comfort in bedding means it ensures that the child’s body remains at a comfortable temperature and that any sweat released during sleep is quickly and effectively transported away from the body. Children not only sleep for longer at night but also, especially in the early years, have an “afternoon nap” as well. Because the bedding is in use for longer, sleeping

comfort is especially important when purchasing for children. The way children and adults produce heat, and their body dimensions, are different, so the measuring and assessment system for adults cannot simply be applied to children’s bedding. This is why scientists at the Hohenstein Institute in Bönnigheim developed the thermal articulated manikin Charlene, allowing recommendations to be made about sleeping comfort at the point of sale.

© Hohenstein Institute Charlene is the name of a thermal articulated manikin 92 cm tall and weighing 14 kg, i.e. approximately the size of a 2-3 year old child. It was developed at the Hohenstein Institute.

Charlene is 92 cm tall and weighs 14 kg and so is roughly the size of a 2-3 year old child. Since the model cannot sweat, measurements are supplemented by the Hohenstein Skin Model which simulates the way human skin gives off heat and sweat. Unlike Charlene, children have hair which retains warmth and so protects the body against heat loss. So that Charlene does not lose heat through her head, the

Consequently, the bedding is the only variable in the test. The Hohenstein Institute evaluation system is based on objective measurements which are correlated with subjective assessments. In this way it is possible to predict how the sleeping comfort of children’s bedding will be experienced in actual use by means of tests in the laboratory. The values for the thermo physiological comfort of children’s bedding that are worked out in the laboratory with the help of Charlene are expressed in the form of what is called the sleeping comfort rating. This ranges from 1 for

“very good” to 4 for “poor”. The assessment system shows one sleeping comfort rating for low ambient temperatures and one for high temperatures. The sleeping comfort rating that is relevant when buying depends on the

room temperature and the individual needs of the child. However, the rating has to be above 2.5 (“good”) for the bedding to be allowed to bear the Hohenstein quality label. The endorsement with the Hohenstein Institute’s “Sleeping comfort rating” quality label allows parents immediately to recognize high-quality bedding that will enable their children to sleep comfortably. The objective assessment system also enables sales staff to make expert and need-based recommendations for their customers. The Hohenstein Institute’s testing of the sleeping comfort of children’s bedding is complemented by the “Sleeping comfort rating for children’s mattresses” quality label. One of the current research projects to do with sleeping comfort for children concerns children’s sleeping bags. The main challenge in this research is to establish the different thermal ranges in which they are used. The researchers expect to be able to publish their results within the next few months.
