Sleep well, be happy! All experts stress the importance of adequate sleep to overall health and wellbeing. But life's challenges in our harried and chaotic world prevent us from realizing the fact that sleep deprivation has been associated with all sorts of problems from catching a cold to unsafe driving. Insomnia is a state of being not able to get to sleep, getting up frequently during night times, not feeling rejuvenated after getting up from the bed in the morning, etc. Thus, it is clear that it is not just the hour quantity of sleep but the quality of sleep that matters. Sleep is so vital to maintain good health and a positive mental wellbeing. We must attain the habit of getting a restful sleep each night. The most important condition of quality sleep is a quality mattress. Then comes the quilt, pillow, other

parts of the bed and the environment if we don't count the health and psychological mood of the person. Sleep Well magazine, one of the very few publications specialized in sleep products, has been offering the best products for the best sleep but it never gets asleep. It is running from one part of the world to other for covering international fairs and to distribute free copies in them. The next issue to be printed on the last day of August will be intensely distributed in the most important fairs of the year such as Maison & Objet-Paris, Mood-Brussels, ZowIstanbul, Modef Expo-Inegol and Heimtextil-Russia. Let's tour the world together. Until then, take care, get good sleep, and wake up for big successes!

ISPA supports decision not to enact mandatory used mattress recycling law The International Sleep Products Association (ISPA) issued the following statement regarding the Connecticut General Assembly's decision to adjourn for the year without passing used mattress recycling legislation: Collecting, dismantling and recycling discarded used mattresses can be a complicated process. After listening to parties with an interest in the legislation, and recognizing the fundamental practical problems that a new statewide system may encounter, the Connecticut legislature decided not to enact a mandatory used mattress recycling law. ISPA opposed the bill when it was introduced because it would have imposed unreasonable costs and burdens on mattress manufacturers, retailers and consumers. We support the decision not to enact a mandatory state recycling law. ISPA has been working for a number of years to encourage responsible recycling of used mattresses and supports the development of legitimate recycling operations. ISPA is currently leading the push for a federal mattress recycling program. “The sponsors of S.B. 89 considered the important logistical and commercial

concerns with the mattress recycling bill at a state level. However, ISPA firmly believes that the best approach to efficient and legitimate mattress recycling lies in federal legislation. A federal recycling program would permit efficiencies and economies of scale that are not possible at a state or local level. It would apply consistent collection and processing practices across the country that would benefit all parties concerned by driving down recycling costs for both consumers and manufacturers while also increasing recycling rates, said ISPA President, Ryan Trainer.

ISPA will continue to advocate for federal legislation with the goal to build a mattress recycling solution that is efficient for both consumers and businesses. To make a program that operates most efficiently, ISPA believes national legislation must be made to address the needs of all consumers, retailers and manufacturers - under one unified, consistent program. The association will continue to work with state and local governments to address the mattress disposal challenges that municipalities face while continuing to advocate for a broad-ranging federal solution.

Mattress sizes by regions Mattresses are produced in a variety of sizes, not just American but also European Mattress sizes. There are twin, full, queen, and king. Although most of these sizes do not vary much in the U.S. they are often different when it comes to other countries. The full size mattress in the U.S. is 54 inches wide by 75 inches long. This is the same size as the European full size mattress. However, in other countries it measures somewhat less. Asia's full size mattress is 48 inches wide by 78 inches long. Although it is 3 inches longer in length, the width is 6 inches shorter. When it comes to king size

18

beds they are not the same either. The king size bed is typically made up of two box springs and one mattress. The length of the mattress in the U.S. is typically 80 inches long. The width however is another matter. The U.S. king size bed is believed to be two-twin size box springs. However, the two twin size box springs are 78 inches wide which is 2 inches wider than the width of a traditional king size bed, which is only 76 inches. The different sizes are thought to be because of the measurements used. In the U.S. inches are used and most countries overseas use the metric measurement.

20

The following is an example of the difference in size between typical beds and the countries in which they are different. Twin Mattress size - In the U.S. this bed is 39 x 75 inches. In Australia it is 36 x 75 inches. Europe measures 35 x 79 inches. Double/Full Mattress Size - U.S. measurements are 54 x 75 inches. In Europe it is 55 x 79 inches. Queen Mattress Size - In the U.S. it is 60 x 80 inches. In Europe the queen is 63 x 79 inches. King Mattress Size - U.S. measurements are 76 x 80 inches. Australia measures 72 x 80 inches. UK measurements are 72 x 78 inches and Europe is 71 x 79 inches. While these measurements only vary by a few inches, it may make a big difference for someone who is tall. They may find t hat their feet may hang over the edge of their bed if they do not have one that is long enough for their stature.

At one time the three quarter bed was a popular one. They were normally used when the requirement for a bigger bed than a twin was required but there may not have been room for a double bed. Measuring 48 x 75 inches they are not used anymore. There are so many sizes available so when you say you want a king or queen set you should really measure

it so the exact size of the bed is known especially before purchasing sheets. Some sheets are made for beds that are longer than the normal length. This should be on the package however; most people really do not take the time to make sure of the length. They just assume that twin means twin and king means king.

Narda; innovative, comfortable, hygienic and healthy mattresses Beyzan is a manufacturer of textiles and components for the mattress industry. The company is a reliable supplier for mattress manufacturers with tailor made textile products and components and has been serving mattress manufacturers for long years. Beyzan has realized an investment project for the production of warp

knitted 3 dimensional spacer fabrics for the mattress industry and has become the first company in Turkey to produce these special technical textile products. The company carries out intensive research and development work in order to make innovations in mattress and bedding textiles. In year 2012,

Beyzan has begun to produce 3D fabrics for mattresses and started a new R&D project for the application of these special textile structures to mattresses and bedding products. There are several opportunities for the 3D fabrics to be utilized in mattresses. The project leader, Ozan Mahir, has summarized these application possibilities as follows:

23

- 3D spacer fabrics are sewn on mattress borders to provide improved ventilation and prevent formation of bacteria, mites, bedbugs and other harmful live organisms inside the mattress - 3D spacer fabrics of 5-15mm height are used for manufacturing the mattress core. In the mattress core, Ozan Mahir Mechanical Engineer "We have developed an innovative mattress design. Due to a special convoluted foam geometry, there is no need to use chemical adhesives to fix the multiple layers of 3D spacer fabric inside the mattress core. The mattress cover also consists of several layers of 3D fabric."

they provide a mechanical spring effect, as if there were metal springs inside the mattress, even though no metal springs are present. Furthermore, the presence of the 3D fabric layers within the mattress core creates layers of ventilation inside the mattress. These layers of ventilation enable air flow through the mattress, providing efficient heat transfer in the form of convection. Efficient air flow means that the excess heat of the human body is efficiently dissipated throughout the mattress and the mattress user feels perfect thermal comfort during sleep. Also the improved air flow maintains low levels of temperature and humidity inside the mattress, and therefore prevents formation of bacteria and other harmful live organisms.

24

- 3D spacer fabrics distribute the pressure applied on a certain area to a larger area. This means that they provide pressure relief: the pressure applied by a certain part of the human body is distributed through a larger area, the mattress user will feel less reaction from the mattress surface in the form of pressure. This pressure relief effect provides an unparalleled comfort for the mattress user and also

Ă–zge Mahir - interior architect: “Our innovative design for the mattress sector provides superior functional properties for the sleep comfort and health.â€?

a perfect solution for the disease called decubitus ulcers. During the comprehensive researches made by Beyzan's R&D team, various applications of 3D fabrics to mattresses have been realized. The 3D fabrics have been employed in the mattress core, mattress cover, and mattress topper. The R&D team has come up with many innovative

solutions for the mattress production process, as well as product designs for the bedding industry. The most significant result of these research activities is an innovative mattress design. Conventional mattresses are usually manufactured by a combination of metal springs, nonwoven felts, foam and chemical adhesives. Each layer of

25

the mattress core is fixed to the adjacent layers by the intensive application of chemical adhesives. These adhesives sublimate (change directly from solid to vapour state) while the mattress is in use. During sleep, the mattress user is in direct contact with the mattress and therefore inhales these chemicals. These chemicals form residues inside the human lungs, causing cancer. Metal springs are employed during the mattress manufacturing process in order to fill the mattress volume with low cost. There are some scientific studies showing that the metal springs inside the mattress collect and reflect the radiation waves caused by base-

stations, mobile phones, radio and television broadcasting, and electronic devices. The metal mattress forms a weave of radiation waves and the strength of this field of radiation reaches its maximum on 75cm from the mattress surface. Although it has not been scientifically proven yet, some researchers claim that this radiation field on a mattress causes cancer. Due to the manufacturing processes, the design and the materials used in production of conventional mattresses, bacteria and other microorganisms grow very fast within the mattress while it is in use. Because of the heat dissipated from the human body and

the stains of liquids (such as sweat) the environment inside mattresses. After 6 months of use, the most clean conventional mattress is said to contain at least 2 millions of microorganisms. The design team members Ă–zge Mahir and Sevi Mahir mentioned about the differences between conventional mattresses and their new innovative mattresses: The innovative mattress production process and the mattress finished products were designed by the R&D team of Beyzan within the light of the above information.

Sevi Mahir - architect: “Our innovative mattress manufacturing process makes it possible to produce mattresses without using any chemical adhesives, metal springs and non-woven felts.

26

Sinem Mahir - textile technician, responsible from test and analysis of functional properties.

The mattress contains no metal springs, nonwoven felts and chemical adhesives. Instead, perfect combinations of high quality foam and 3D fabrics are used. The foam is cut in CNC cutting machines in a special geometry so that it forms a base for the other layers of the mattress core including the 3D fabrics. This special geometry eliminates the need of using chemicals in order to fix different layers of materials. The mattress core can be assembled easily in such a way to provide stability and integrity of the mattress. Several layers of 3D fabric are present in between foam layers in order to improve sleep comfort by providing efficient thermal comfort due to unparalleled air circulation and

mechanical comfort due to dramatically improved pressure relief. The highpressure relief effect is a perfect solution for the prevention of decubitus ulcers, a disease which harms tissues of human body because of constant pressure applied. Another significant feature of using several layers of 3D fabrics is that the improved air circulation regulates the temperature and humidity inside the mattress and thus prevents formation of bacteria, mites, bedbugs and other harmful live organisms inside the mattress. The borders of Narda mattress contain 3D spacer fabrics which are highly air permeable. The spacer fabric along the mattress border meets the air flow channels of the specially designed convoluted foam geometry and also the layers of 3D spacer fabrics within the foam. Therefore a very efficient air flow is obtained from top to bottom, front to back, and left to right, ie. in all possible directions. Narda mattresses are covered with removable mattress covers. Zippers are present along the mattress borders so that the cover can be removed and machine-washed. This brings two significant advantages: 1. the consumer is able to see what is inside the mattress before purchase. 2. the mattress cover can be washed regularly and the mattress can be kept clean for years. The innovative mattress cover is quilted with 3D spacer fabrics of height ranging from 3 to 10mm. These 3D fabrics are softer than the 3D fabrics inside the mattress core. The mattress user feels a perfect sleep

comfort, perspiration is prevented, and a strong solution is provided for the decubitus ulcers disaese. The company also offers special mattress toppers, mattress pads and pillows which contain layers of 3D fabrics. Narda mattress toppers and pads can be used on top of an existing mattress. This is an economical solution for obtaining better sleep comfort and hygiene, preventing perspiration and formation of decubitus ulcers. Narda's pillows contain high quality materials such as viscoelastic foam or latex in the core, and special types of 3D fabrics on the cover. The user feels the unique softness which does not permit sinking of the head inside the pillow when he/she lays his/her head on it. The perfect air circulation prevents perspiration of the human head during hot summer nights. R&D team member Sinem Mahir is carrying out the tests and analysis of the functional properties of the sleep products made with 3D fabrics. “There are many academic studies showing the effectiveness of warp knitted 3D textile fabrics in preventing decubitus, prodiving improved air circulation, better thermal comfort and better pressure relief she says. Beyzan aims to provide the mattresses as finished products, mattress toppers, pads and pillows to its customers who are renowned mattress manufacturers and bedding brands. Also with the Narda brand, the company will serve bedding retailers and export customers.

Visko Love, the first visco mattress and pillow producer in Turkey

Visco Elastic “Memory Foam” was developed by NASA in the 1960s to decrease the burden and pressure on the astronouts' spine during their flights. It was introduced to the industrial environment years after. Ural Grup has been producing Visco Elastic material since 1996, right after it was introduced to the common use

of the public in the early 1990s. An official of the company made the following statement regarding Visko Love: “Our company is differentiated from other companies by its qualified production system and innovative works to introduce you better products continuously.

33

“Our products are being manufactured in the specially designed moulds one by one and made of open cell Visco Elastic material. Preferring mould system and high density materials in our production not only increase the comfort in usage but also extend the durability of the products. “Our mattresses help in regulating your blood circulation, relieving joint pain, and keeping your spine straight by adjusting with your body and filling all the spaces. Your sleep will not be disturbed by your movements and eventually you end up with a sound, continous sleep. Our pillows are manufactured with the same material in the same manufacturing system. Our pillows help in making the possible pains go away by supporting the neck and shoulder muscles. We suggest our products not only for people with health problems but also for anybody who wants to keep their health stable. “Ural Grup is also the first gel pillow and mattress producer in Turkey. The gel part which gives off a great coolness for the user is applied to the visco in the moulds without using any extra chemicals for glueing. “Although Visko Love is a very new brand in Turkey, there are 95 exclusive stores (franchises) around Turkey, and there are more than 200 sales points in total. “Visko Love has the largest product range for visco mattresses and pillows. There are more than 20 mattress and 50 pillow types. We have different kind of pillows for sleeping but also we have travel pillows, special waist pillows, and sitting cushions for comfort and for medical needs.

“Our mattresses and pillows produced by Visco Elastic material are being preferred by many people who pay

attention to their health around the World and in Turkey due to their superior features.”

34

Men should sleep alone? “Sleeping with a lover has a powerful and negative effect on one part of a man's anatomy: his brain,” had said Austrian Professor Gerhard Kloesch couple years ago. “Men, whether you have sex or not, sharing your bed all night long can actually make you stupid, sapping your brain power -at least temporarily.” That was the

surprising conclusion reached by scientists from the University of Vienna in Austria. Oddly, men thought they slept better with a partner and women believed they did not. In fact, both men and women had more disturbed sleep, but in men it affected their ability to perform on cognitive tests the next day. This has nothing to do

with having sex-or not. It's all about sleep quality. That's probably why mattress producers started to develop one single mattress with two different features. It could be one side hard and the other side soft or they could have some some other features.

36

This even may solve the problem partially‌ Led by Gerhard Kloesch, the team had studied eight unmarried, childless couples in their 20s using both questionnaires and a wrist activity monitor called an "actigraph" to assess sleep patterns. The couples spent 10 nights sharing the same bed and 10 nights sleeping in different beds. Here's a startling side effect of insomnia. Lack of sleep not only makes you tired and cranky the next day, but it also has this astonishing effect on your job. Men had said that they had slept better with their partner, but in actuality they had had more disturbed

sleep even when they did not have sex before falling asleep. That lack of sleep caused increased levels of a stress hormone, which reduced their ability to perform simple cognitive tests the next day, reports New Scientist. Interestingly, when men had sex and then fell asleep with their partner, they were better able to remember their dreams the next day. Women had said they had slept better alone, and they were right. Still, even when they had slept with their partners they had reported being far more refreshed in the morning than their sleep time indicated. Unlike their partners, their stress levels and mental scores did not suffer. When it comes to dream recall, women were the opposite of men. They remembered

their dreams better when they slept alone than when they slept with their partner. "It's not surprising that people are disturbed by sleeping together. Historically, we have never been meant to sleep in the same bed as each other. It is a bizarre thing to do," Dr. Neil Stanley, a sleep expert at the University of Surrey, told the BBC News. "Sleep is the most selfish thing you can do, and it's vital for good physical and mental health. Sharing the bed space with someone who is making noises and who you have to fight with for the duvet is not sensible. If you are happy sleeping together that's great, but if not there is no shame in separate beds." Kloesch presented the research at a meeting of the Forum of European Neurosciences in Vienna.

Phi - the symbol for harmonic proportions. The ancient Greeks have tried to define beauty by using mathematics. In nature they discovered many examples, in which dimensions fall within a numerical ratio of 1 : 1.618, otherwise known as the golden mean. In nature the golden cut is everywhere. In the drawing of butterfly wings, in the turn time of planets, in the pattern of the seeds of a sunflower and in the slag house‌ The proportions in the diagrid of the slag house develop in a range, in which the next point is the sum of the current point and the preceding point: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21. The Greek written Phi has the form of a slag house.

Phi-ton is always searching to the ideal proportion. In drafts form, materials and comfort. Women sensitivity and touch on pillows and duvets...

“Beehouse” as a brand name has only 9 months of brand history but its developers have 16 years of experience in home textile and especially specialized in the field of pillow and duvet.

The personalities behind this success are three businesswomen. “It has been such a short time doing our business but our brand name 'beehouse' has been known even from the first month of our start of producing which has

been progressing every day, ” says an official of the company and adds: “We feel that we have made a sign of the water because it wasn't easy to work as three women especially as a producer in the men's field but when

55

you have an experience, faith and honesty, you can get your own place and make your own success story. “We believe that whatever you come across in your life with, you have to interpret it right. “We have been serving in the home textile field with 40 different types of pillows and around 20 different types of duvets. Beside natural products such

as goose down, bamboo and wool, developing with the technological products such as viscoelastic-nano and silicone pillows and duvets are also our expertise. “Now we are glad to announce 'beehouse' even in other countries such as Middle East, Europe and Far East.”

A smart bed tidying up itself from Ohea

It's a smart bed, which actually knows how to tide up itself when the user pushes the button. The bed is mechanical and with one push of a button, it can tuck away sheets, blankets and pillows with ease, much to the amusement of the child who is sleeping on it. Ohea, the innovator of this smart bed, indicates on their site that it will “soon be available” for sale. The bed is equipped with a device that enables it to automatically straighten the bedding, what is called “to make the bed”, once the occupant has gotten up and left the bed unmade. The time the bed takes to make itself is 50 seconds.

58

When the bed-making mechanism activates, a lid on each side of the bed opens and a mechanical arm with two rollers emerges on each side at the foot of the bed. After positioning the lateral cord that holds the duvet between the two rollers, the arm pulls the duvet up to the head of the bed. Once the cord is fully extended, the arm descends and the lid closes.

The main pieces that are straightened and put in order are the following: the bottom sheet, top cover (duvet), and the pillowcases. The duvet, the pillowcase, and the pillow itself are straightened mechanically while the bottom sheet is kept straight since it is attached with Velcro to the mattress cover. Following is the statement of Ohea on their website:

At the same time, the pillows are straightened by cords attached to the pillowcases after which the panels rotate elevating the pillows; and once the upper coverlet has been stretched to the head of the bed, the pillows fall back onto it.

“Making the bed after getting up is a daily chore. Although it might seem a minor one, it has the character of a ritual that must be carried out, so much so that many people are simply unable to leave the home without having made their bed and this often gives

rise to conflicts and arguments between parents and children. It's a proven fact that for many people making their bed after getting up can be a tiresome, even painful task; sometimes out of sheer habit, other times because one is in a hurry and lacks time. There are also many instances in which because of advanced age, some genetic defect, some type of physical disability or because of an accidents, the individual is simply unable to make the bed or where to do so the person would have to make an extraordinary effort which itself could end up being detrimental to the person's health.

Good sleep memories on adjustable bed memory foam Adjustable bed memory foams are ideal for increasing the comfort of sleeping, relaxing, reading, writing, eating, etc‌

61

An adjustable bed memory foam is an innovation that is partly derived from technology researched by NASA for their astronauts to provide extra comfort to household users. Memory

Foam was originally innovated for NASA astronauts because the slowrecovery cushions relieved some of the G-force on astronauts during launches. Memory Foam used as materials for

adjustable bed memory foam will also mold to your body's pressure, providing comfort and support. An adjustable bed memory foam uses foam materials that is a unique combination of progressive visco elastic foam that gives a sensation that is different from other mattress types because it molds to each individual torso and returns to its normal shape. Visco Elastic Foam is used by NASA in the space shuttle seats to cushion the effect of G-forces during lift off since it is energy absorbing. An adjustable bed memory foam does not just relieves pressure on the body, but also is wrapped in a special fabric which protects the Visco material and extra edge support for ease of getting up from bed.

62

This makes the adjustable bed memory foam a unique type of mattress. Always try to look for adjustable bed memory foam that is designed to deliver maximum comfort. Adjustable bed memory foams are ideal for increasing the comfort of sleeping, relaxing, reading, writing, eating, etc. Usually adjustable bed memory foam comes with convenient hand control to set the sections settings independently. On the normal basis, an adjustable bed memory foam comes with the following features. Adjustable bed memory foam is normally high quality orthopedic mattress with matching foam base. They also come with independent head and foot operation for ease of control. Some units of adjustable bed memory foam come with wireless pendant with glow-inthe-dark buttons for extra visibility.

63

Never forget to ask you sales person to recommend an adjustable bed memory foam that has two powerful, yet extremely quiet electric motors respond instantly to commands. If you have the time to shop for a proper adjustable bed memory foam, then look for one that has an individual locking casters, because it allows easy movement of the bed, as well as a locked into position. Finally, I would prefer to recommend people to buy one with unitized steel frame that features armor shield plating. You'd want your adjustable bed memory foam to possess exceptional toughness, impact resistance and

extensive corrosion protection for many years of useful life. I also came across new models of adjustable bed memory foam that come with a dual 10 speed

massager which you can set using a 30 minute timer, to provide you with a soothing muscle relaxation after a hard day's work.

Therapedic International launches “Agility” Collection Eye-catching, sleek line debuts at Las Vegas Market

Therapedic International announced it will introduce its new Agility collection, which combines innovative gel foam and thousands of microcoils for unmatched cooling comfort and support, at the upcoming Las Vegas Furniture Market, July 30 - August 3, 2012. “The combination of micro-pocket coils and gel infused memory foam give the Agility line the most supple and responsive sleep surface of any mattress on the market,” said Therapedic president and CEO, Gerry Borreggine.

The new line is made with thousands of micro-pocket springs, which are encased in a three-way stretch fabric, giving the mattress a quick response surface feel, and allows it to be highly resistant to body impressions and sagging. Preserve® VG, the first biobased viscoelastic gel foam on the market, which is swirled into the foam compound, adds comfort and cooling performance to the line. Each mattress in the four-model series features a combination core, which includes a mix of high-density foam, Preserve VG and thousands of pocketed micro-coils,

offering unmatched comfort and support. Highlighting the Pantone Color of the Year, the Agility line features a vibrant orange- tangerine and white ticking with a contemporary floral design, enhancing the curb appeal of the beds on the showroom floor. “The Agility collection provides retailers with a striking product that will really 'pop' on the sales floor,” said Borreggine. “It's the perfect example of how a design element, like a vibrant color, can draw a consumer

71

to a product, and how a special feature, such as the highly responsive micro-coil, can seal the deal at the point-of-sale.” Four models, the Dash, the Tango, the Freestyle, and the Crossover comprise the national line and range in retail pricing from $1,299 to $2,499 in queen. Experience the new Agility collection in Therapedic's showroom at the Las Vegas Furniture Market, located in space B-822. Therapedic International is a 55-yearold mattress and sleep products manufacturer, with over 50 licensees producing products under the Therapedic brand label throughout the world. It is a recognized top-10 mattress brand, and has significantly increased its brand awareness and distribution in the related sleep products categories over the past five years.

Therapedic International launches new Ecogel series at Las Vegas Market Mattress sleeps 30% cooler than other foam products Therapedic International announced that it will introduce its EcoGel® mattress series at the Winter Las Vegas Market, Jan. 30 - Feb. 3, 2012. The collection solves the critical issue of sleeping hot on foam. The EcoGel collection is made using a pre-polymer that is added and 'swirled' into the foam compound as it is made, giving the product better adherence to the foam. The open cell design of the gel-memory foam technology supports air and moisture movement while improving blood flow and oxygen exposure to skin cells. The combination of the DynaFlow® Cooling Fabric, designed to increase both the breathability and cooling effect, and the swirl gel-memory foam, allows the EcoGel beds to sleep cooler than traditional foam. The new gel collection also features a layer of soy.

“With the rapid growth of the gel category, the introduction of the EcoGel series provides our customers an affordable alternative for consumers looking to ease into the gel or green category without the hefty price of other brands,” said President and CEO Gerry Borreggine. “While most manufacturers are introducing products with specs of gel infused into the foam, our EcoGel line features swirls of gel, which offers greater gel coverage, and greater cooling and comfort benefits.” The EcoGel series has three models: The Blue Lagoon 8.25-inch mattress, which combines gel memory foam with a layer of latex enhanced support, and high density foam, as well as the DynaFlow® Cooling Fabric; the Blue Essence 11-inch mattress includes an additional layer of high support memory foam; and the Blue Heaven 13-inch mattress, which has an extra layer of Talalay latex. The company

will display one of the models on an adjustable base in collaboration with Leggett & Platt. To highlight the line in a room full of gel introductions, Therapedic is offering a bold new point-of-purchase package that incorporates bright colors, banners and informative materials. The suggested retail price of the EcoGel series ranges from $1,199 to $1,999 in queen. Experience the new EcoGel collection at Las Vegas Market in Therapedic's showroom, B-0822. Therapedic International is a 54-yearold mattress and sleep products manufacturer, with over 50 licensees producing products under the Therapedic brand label throughout the world. It is a recognized top-10 mattress brand, and has significantly increased its brand awareness and distribution in the related sleep products categories over the past five years.

Visco-Spring速 Wonderpillow: a step into the future Bedding manufacturers are often asked these days if they have any new products to propose and, when they do, it is usually just an improvement on an existing one that is already quite good - nothing revolutionary. This time, with its over 4-decade long experience in design, manufacturing and world-wide marketing of premium bed pillows, Soff-Art has something truly special to offer its distributors and their customers. After months of research and testing they have finally developed a pillow that did not exist before and that will arguably outperform any other. They are so convinced of its merits that they have applied for a patent and built a state-of-the-art plant especially designed for this production. Visco-Spring速 Wonderpillow has now been introduced as a winning combination of two systems that have been successfully used for decades, so that there is no longer any need to choose between a memory foam pillow and a spring pillow and the benefits of both can be enjoyed at once. Furthermore, the intrinsic resilience of its components will allow this particular pillow to maintain its shape and comfort level much longer than any conventional pillow.

It is comfier, quicker, better and entirely manufactured in Italy

73

Soff-Art, the Pillow Atelier announces the introduction of a groundbreaking product combining the two most advanced technologies in pillow design: the Visco-Spring速 Wonderpillow

Memory Foam, also known as viscoelastic foam, is heat and pressure sensitive and it moulds quickly to the shape of the body. Originally developed in the 60's under a contract by NASA's Research Center, it was subsequently released for commercial use. Memory foam's open cell structure varies from very open to almost close, with the more open generating more airflow through the foam and resulting in increased comfort and better recovery. Pocketed Coils, fitted together, become an independent suspension system that contours to each person's form and weight, adjusting instantly to every movement and providing new levels of support and comfort. The air contained inside gently flows in and out with every movement of the head, thus reducing heat and moisture accumulation. Given the recognized importance of the pillow in the bed environment and its undeniable relation with good sleep quality and generally accepted hygienic considerations, a product of this caliber cannot go unnoticed in the bedding industry. The Visco-Spring速 Wonderpillow is already quite popular in Europe, the Far East and the Americas and it is likely to become the new benchmark against which savvy marketers and discerning public will measure other products of the same category.

That precisely corresponds with the expectations of modern, active customers. They want natural textiles with a positive effect on their skin - a wish SeaCell® and smartcel™ can fulfill. SeaCell®-fibers contain healthpromoting active agents of seaweed, allow an active nutrient exchange between fiber and skin and thus provide a long lasting effect of wellbeing and protection against environmental influences for the user. smartcel™ sensitive is the first antibacterial fiber on the market with the essential trace element zinc. This fiber innovation combines revitalizing skincare with antibacterial properties. Furthermore, smartcel™ sensitive arrests the development of mites - a crucial argument in the home textile sector! Both of smartfiber's natural fibers are particularly suited for the application in all kinds of textiles and are already integrated in numerous product lines of renowned international suppliers. Their products provide wellness for the skin of their customers - thanks to SeaCell® and smartcel™ sensitive.

Home is where SeaCell® is - the wellness-fiber with seaweed for an active generation SeaCell® - the cellulose fiber with incorporated seaweed - is the basis for natural textiles of high quality that

link real complacency to an additional benefit for the skin. The seaweed in the SeaCell®-fibers contains salutary active ingredients like vitamins, minerals and trace elements. Because of an active nutrient exchange

between fiber and skin, it has a health promoting and skin caring effect. Furthermore, seaweed with so-called antioxidants contains a natural protection against free radicals and sustainably reduces damaging environmental influences on the skin. This radical scavenging efficacy has been verified by the ABEL® antioxidant test of the University of Jena. SeaCell® provides a particularly soft and smooth touch. Whoever sleeps in duvets and pillows with SeaCell® can experience a heavenly night that is pure wellness. SeaCell® provides you with comfort and care: After a busy day, just snuggle in your wellness blanket and enjoy the calming effect of the seaweed on your skin. Body and soul can recover much better from everyday stress - because home is where SeaCell® is. SeaCell® contains brown seaweed with the name ascophyllum nodosum

or knotted wrack. Because of its high amount of mineral substances (e.g. magnesium, calcium, potassium, phosphor), trace elements (particularly iron and iodine) and the vitamins B, A and E, knotted wrack enables various application possibilities. Knotted wrack is harvested in the unique ecosystem of the cold and pure fjords of Iceland. These far into mainland reaching estuaries with mostly very steep slopes present pristine nature and are a paradise for animals.

Medical studies on knotted wrack have verified that it contains the active ingredient fucoidan, which has a growth inhibiting effect on tumor cells. Other studies prove a strong antithrombotic, blood thinning and anticoagulant effect. The SeaCell®-fibers are produced in a completely natural and environmentally friendly way. The astonishing fact about this development is the solid integration of the substances into the fiber.

114

The regenerative effect will remain consistent in the cellulose fiber even after several washing cycles. SeaCell® provides the healthy combination of palpable comfort, numerous processing possibilities and good compatibility with other fibers in knitted and woven fabrics as well as in fleeces. Concerned with the environment and hence up-to-date, SeaCell® brings the positive achievements of nature back to men. Hence, the European Union has awarded this process with the European Environmental Award 2000 in the category “technology for sustainable developments”. SeaCell® can be used for the production of home textiles that combine cozy comfort with gentle care and provide protection against negative environmental influences. SeaCell® - time to relax! smartcel™ sensitive: soft hygiene with a revitalizing effect - your skin appreciates! The smartcel™ sensitive fiber uses the skin caring effect of the essential trace element zinc for all kind of home textiles with a soft, regenerative effect. Since it is directly incorporated into the fiber, zinc is not only an important part of the human nutrition but also skin regenerating and antibacterial, plus it enhances the healing of inflammation and wounds.

The healthy growth of the skin and hair is highly determined by zinc. It fosters the regeneration of cells and hence catalyses the healing of inflammation and wounds. Therefore, zinc oxide is also utilised in pharmacy, cosmetics and multivitamin products. As care product for external application, for example as zinc oxide in sun blocker, it protects from harmful UV radiation. In ointment, powder, baby creams and cosmetic products zinc oxide supports the natural processes of the skin, fosters the wound healing and fights skin inflammation. Thus, smartcel™ sensitive holds the secret of natural freshness. The antibacterial and consequently odor-reducing effect of smartcel™ sensitive is triggered when the skin gives off moisture, and an active exchange between the fibers and the skin is produced. The metabolism of bacteria is disrupted and odor is reduced. This antibacterial effect of zinc could be detected several times by various independent tests. Moreover, smartcel™ sensitive offers effective help against mite allergies, which mostly trigger chronic rhinitis, allergic asthma or torturous neurodermatitis. Zinc within the fibers provides for an environment that is

unfavorable for mites. This positive reaction is verified by the renowned Hohenstein institute. Thanks to this nurturing, hygienic and verifiably health-promoting effect on skin and body, smartcel™ sensitive is particularly suitable for home textiles, since, most of the time, they are in direct contact with the skin. In addition to an enhancement of the wear comfort and the protection of stress factors or similar environmental stesses, the revitalizing properties of this fiber particularly help allergic persons and people who are susceptible to diseases such as neurodermatitis or psoriasis. So to speak, by using bedding with smartcel™ sensitive, the skin regenerates itself during sleep. By the insertion of pharma grade 4 zinc white - a snow-white zinc oxide that is used medically as well as in food - into the fiber a dyeing of textiles in all colors - including white - is possible. And: smartcel™ sensitive is equally effective in combination with wool mixes. Quality is an ace up smartfiber's sleeve: The fibers SeaCell® and smartcel™ sensitive are certified by Eco-Tex® standard 100, product class 1 (for baby products) and have been tested by several independent institutes regarding their efficiency.

Beyzan offers a wide range of specialty textiles for mattresses

Beyzan Tekstil was founded in 1999 and manufactures mattress edge tapes and jacquard woven tapes for mattresses. The company has been serving the bedding industry for 9 years since 2004. In 2011, Beyzan started implementing a new investment project for the production of specialty textile products for mattresses. The investments were completed and the new investment units became fully operational at the beginning of 2012. The new products,

namely the 3 dimensional warp knitted spacer fabrics, jacquard labels and readymade mattress borders are manufactured within the scope of this investment. These products have also led the way for Beyzan to develop further innovative technical textile products and ready made textile components for the mattress and bedding industry. Beyzan now offers a wide range of textile products and components for mattress manufacturers:

* Mattress tapes * 3D spacer fabrics * Jacquard label tapes * Ready made mattress borders with jacquard tapes and spacer fabrics * Quilts with 3D spacer fabrics * Removable mattress covers with spacer fabrics * Mattress toppers with 3D spacer fabrics * Pillows and pillow covers with 3D spacer fabrics * Tufting tapes * Fabric mattress handles

117

distribute pressure to wider areas. Therefore spacer fabrics of 10mm or 15mm height are employed in the mattress core to provide pressure relief effect for the mattress user. Also, the presence of 3D fabric layers within the mattress core provides layers of efficient air circulation inside the mattress.

Innovation Comes With The Warp Knitted 3D Spacer Fabrics 3D fabrics (also called, sandwich fabric, spacer fabric or air mesh) add superior and unparalleled functional properties to mattresses and mattress components. Spacer fabrics are open mesh textile structures which are highly air permeable. Therefore they are used in mattress borders to provide superior air permeability as well as an elegant look. The mattress borders are either prepared by utilizing a tape of spacer fabric in the middle of the border, or by quilting the spacer fabric with fiber and interlining and making the whole border with the spacer fabric. 3D fabrics have a strong pressure relief effect, they are like metal springs, but their relative superiority is that they

This brings perfect thermal comfort, due to efficient heat transfer in the form of convection within the core. When the core is combined with a specially quilted mattress ticking which contains spacer fabric on its bottom layer, the excess heat of the human body is easily dissipated. Thus, excess heat and moisture is not accumulated inside the mattress, the growth of bacteria, mites, bedbugs and other harmful microorganisms is prevented. Efficient air circulation is vital for mattress hygiene. Thanks to the presence of the 3D fabrics, the consumer feels thermally comfortable due to the dramatically improved air circulation and also feels mechanically comfortable due to the pressure relief effect and softness provided by the spacer fabrics. Beyzan also develops certain types of spacer fabrics, the top layers of which comprise of texturized polyester yarns. These fabrics are softer when compared to spacer fabrics produced with FDY yarns. The complete mattress

border can be manufactured with these 3D fabrics and they can also be used as the mattress ticking fabric, as seen in applications which many of the specialty mattress manufacturers around the world prefer to use. The mattress covers, toppers and pads manufactured with spacer fabrics provide strong solutions for the prevention of decubitus ulcers, a dangerous disease from which patients who have to lie in the same periods for long durations suffer. Beyzan develops many functional designs of removable covers, toppers and pads for preventing decubitus ulcers.

BeautyrestŽ finds 30 US cities most in need of a recharge™ Online analysis reveals hot spots of the sleepless and stressed

Simmons, the mattress company which has made the Beautyrest Mattress, has compiled a list of cities across the United States, which they think needs recharging the most. As part of its brand promise of "Living Life Fully Charged™," Beautyrest recently set

out on a search for the U.S. cities most in need of a recharge. Through a unique blend of research, the company studied millions of Twitter posts, Google searches and other social media behaviors of residents in major cities across the country to find the

locations where people shared they were sleepless, stressed out, overworked, or otherwise less than fully charged. The analysis found the following 30 U.S. cities most in need of some rest and relaxation in order by need:

128

Las Vegas, Miami, Austin, Atlanta, Durham, Houston, Chicago, ArlingtonTexas, Pittsburgh, Columbus-Ohio, San Diego, Nashville, Charlotte, LynwoodCalif., Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Boston, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Dallas, San Jose, New York, Raleigh, Portland-Ore., Seattle, San Francisco, Denver, Minneapolis, Phoenix and San Antonio. To compile the list, the Beautyrest team studied quantitative and qualitative metrics in the areas of exercise, diet, mental health and sleep, measuring each pillar of wellness to understand the level of a city's overall health and happiness as evidenced by residents' social media and search behaviors. In its search,

the company found that over 5.6 million tweets related to people "needing recharge" were posted last year. "Anyone who doesn't feel fully charged in their day-to-day life should know there are some simple steps they can take to help restore balance and recharge themselves," said health and fitness expert and chairman of the board for the American Council on Exercise (ACE) Chris Freytag, a wellness expert for Beautyrest. "Getting better sleep is a great first step, especially since 73 percent of us are getting less sleep per night than we should, and 70 million Americans are affected by sleep problems." Other interesting data revealed by the Beautyrest study include:

o New York City has the highest volume of stress related tweets o Los Angeles is home to the most people that "can't sleep" o Residents of Boston perform the most anxiety-related Google searches o Women make up a disproportionate size of the group needing a recharge To help residents of these cities-and anyone who feels the need to recharge their human battery-Beautyrest suggests the Beautyrest® Recharge™ Sleep System, which combines three cutting-edge technologies - AirCool™ Memory Foam, Independent Support™ Technology and AirCool™ Design crafted to deliver the comfort you want and the support your body needs so you can wake up Living Life Fully Charged™.

Sleepskin™ by Springs Creative increases better sleep performance

Sleepskin™ by Springs Creative Products Group is the first real performance fabric for better sleep. Performance fabrics have improved our lives everywhere - but the most important place - where we sleep. Sleepskin™ changes that by being scientifically developed for improved sleep. Bodies don't turn off at night. In fact, the opposite is true. The body works very hard to repair and

rejuvenate itself during sleep and change in heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature rival many strenuous activities during the day. Fluid Stretch™ dramatically reduces pressure points Considerable improvements to the mattress surface have been made by recent developments in visco, latex and gel technology to relieve

pressure points, yet current mattress fabrics actually negate these benefits significantly by not offer¬ing the same level of movement. SleepSkin™, on the other hand, helps diffuse pressure points with Fluid Stretch™ a performance level of fabric stretch and recover that gives a dramatic new feel. Fluid Stretch™ makes any mattress better.

131

Air and moisture transport means greater comfort In the same way sports performance fabrics are designed to ventilate, SleepSkin™ is uniquely constructed to move air and vapor away from the body. Improved sleep comfort is possible due to this better evaporation tech¬nology. Testing has proven SleepSkin™ out performs traditional knits by a large margin. Temperature regulation Heat buildup is proven to interrupt good sleep and actually lower REM

sleep quality. Sleepskin™ allows heat to pass through it instead of insulating like traditional mattress fabrics, which gives a more comfortable mattress surface throughout the night. With the addition of Thermic, an optional temperature regulating technology developed by by Belgium-based Devan Chemicals, even greater temperature control is possible. By reacting to the body's temperature changes, the fabric actually helps a person stay closer to the thermal neutral zone.

SleepSkin™ also opens a whole new world of design as well with unlimited creative possibilities. Because SleepSkin™ is constructed completely different than any other mattress fabric, new printing and design technology can be used that open a whole new avenue of design expression. SleepSkin™ is made to deliver a higher level of comfort to help better sleep performance - and the better sleep performance is at night, the better perfor¬mance is during the day.

How mattress is made With the exception of a few large companies, most mattress manufacturers are fairly small, community-based operations. Of the approximately 825 mattress factories across the United States, most are still owned and operated by the founding families.

From the available evidences, it seems fairly certain that the concept of the mattress originated during prehistoric times. By lying on piles of leaves, straw, and animal skins, early humans were able to sleep more comfortably and more soundly than they could have on hard surfaces. To a large extent the development of the mattress is closely linked with that of the bed. In many ancient societies, the bed was considered the most important piece of furniture in the household; often, it provided a central

133

gathering place for dining and relaxing as well as sleeping. Over the centuries, bed frames became more elaborate for those who could afford luxury; however, mattresses themselves remained unsophisticated-and uncomfortable. Until the twentieth century, they generally consisted of lumpy pads filled with horsehair, cotton, or rags. Poorer people relied on ticks -fabric sacks stuffed with straw, corncobs, or other crop debris. In addition to offering an inconsistent texture, such primitive mattresses were difficult to clean-and they generally started out dirty, stuffed as they were with agricultural debris that often entered the pad or ticking with soil and insects. However, they offered one concrete advantage: made at home from castoff farm goods, they were cheap. Even late in the nineteenth century when small local manufacturers began to produce mattresses commercially, the items remained inexpensive because early mattress makers continued to rely on extremely inexpensive stuffing (usually, unusable fabric remnants discarded by second-hand tailors).

134

Mattresses with stabilizing interior springs, probably the single most significant advance in mattress design, were first developed during the mid1800s. By placing a set of uniform springs inside layers of upholstery, mattress manufacturers could imbue their product with a firm, resilient, and uniform texture. However, because socalled innerspring mattresses were expensive to manufacture, only luxury ships and hotels that could pass the cost along to their affluent patrons purchased them initially. It was not until after World War I that innerspring mattresses were mass-produced by Zalmon Simmons, Jr., the president of a company that had theretofore produced bedsteads. Despite the fact that Simmons asked 40 dollars-more than twice the cost of the finest horsehair mattress available at that time-for his innerspring mattress in 1926, his products proved so comfortable that millions of Americans purchased them.

136

To render potential customers more willing to spend what must have struck many as a small fortune on his innerspring mattress, Simmons promoted the advantages of a good night's sleep. The effectiveness of this marketing strategy has only increased over the years, as subsequent research has confirmed that abundant, highquality sleep constitutes a fundamental component of good health. Today's sophisticated mattresses improve sleeping comfort in several ways. First, through a variety of enhanced innerspring designs, modern mattresses distribute the weight of the body over a broad area; this also helps to prevent differential

wear on the mattress. In addition, mattresses offer surfaces of appropriate softness and flexibility to help keep the spine in its naturally curved position. However, contemporary mattress manufacturers carefully avoid excessively soft surfaces that would distort the position of the sleeper's spine, resulting in discomfort or even pain. Presently, the consumer demand for mattresses is fairly consistent. In 1990, approximately 16 million mattresses were sold in the United States. Together with foundations, mattresses accounted for about $4 billion in retail sales.

Raw Materials Mattresses are presently made of many materials, both natural and synthetic. The innerspring, helical, and boxspring components are made from wire; the boxspring wire is usually of a heavier gauge than that used in the innerspring. The insulator consists of semi-rigid netting or wire mesh, and the cushioning layers can comprise a number of different materials including natural fiber, polyurethane foam, and polyester. The flanges are made of fabric, and the hogs rings of metal. Top, bottom, and side panels consist of a durable fabric cover quilted over a backing of foam or fiber, and the binding.

138

Innerspring unit is received in mattress factory.

Once the completed innerspring unit is received, workers manually apply the insulator. Next, they apply the cushioning layers that will determine the feel and comfort of the final product. Meanwhile, the decorative cover that will serve as the exterior for the top, bottom, and sides is made on a giant quilting machine, which controls a multitude of needles that stitch the cover to a layer of backing material. Tape that holds the ticking together is made of heavy-duty, fibrous, synthetic material. The underlying boxspring may consist of either a wooden frame with slats or of metal coils similar to those used in the mattress itself. The boxspring may be upholstered, but, even if it is not, it always receives a fabric covering. The Manufacturing Process Building mattress layers 1) Most mattress manufacturers subcontract the production of the innerspring unit to an outside firm that specializes in making springs. Once the completed spring unit is received

Insulator is manually applied by workers.

and inspected, the workers manually apply the insulator. Next, they apply the cushioning layers that will determine the feel and comfort of the final product. 2) While the mattress is being "built up" in one part of the plant, the decorative cover that will serve as the exterior for the top, bottom and sides is being made in another part. Usually this cover is made on a giant quilting machine, which controls a multitude of needles that stitch the cover to a layer of backing material. The stitching chosen serves both useful and ornamental purposes, as it must prevent the mattress cover from slipping or creeping over the layers of cushioning in addition to creating a visually pleasing exterior. 3) Once the fabric is quilted, it is cut into panels that will fit the top and bottom of the mattress. The side panels are often cut from this same composite or made separately on a border machine. If side handles or vents are to be added, they are attached to the side panels before these are applied to the mattress.

Cover for mattress is quilted automatically.

Attaching the flanges 4) Specially modified sewing machines are used to attach the flanges to the top and bottom panels, and the hogs rings are stapled to the flanges. Everything is now ready for the closing operation, during which the hogs rings will be secured to the innerspring unit. Completing the mattress 5) The closing operation is of one of the most highly skilled and critical procedures in the entire process. It is done with a movable sewing head that is mounted on a track. Tape edge operators manually feed the top, bottom, and side panels and a heavy duty binding tape into the sewing machine as it moves around the mattress. As this combination of materials is fed into the machine, the operators use their skill to feed the proper amount of each material into the machine to produce a professionally tailored product. 6) Some of the highest quality mattresses may also feature a pillowtop, a panel filled with soft upholstery

140

and attached to the top and bottom panels of the mattress for a more luxurious feel and appearance. Prequilted, the pillow-top is then taped to the mattress.

Cover is cut info panels to fit top and bottom of mattress. Side panels are also cut.

Boxsprings 7) If the desired boxspring has a spiked coil design, it is made by stapling the bottom of each coil to a flat wooden frame. A wire grid is then placed on top of the springs and, once aligned, manually locked to them.

Flanges are added and stopled with logs rings.

A thin layer of upholstery is applied to the top. If the desired boxspring contains no springs, Once the cover is quilted, it is cut into top, bottom, and side panels. Next, flanges are added, and hogs rings are stapled to them. Finally, in the closing operation, workers use a movable sewing head mounted on a track to feed the top, bottom, and side panels and a heavy duty binding tape into the sewing machine as it moves around the mattress. The mattress is then ready for packaging. It consists of a wooden frame that may or may not have a layer of upholstery attached to its top. Regardless of the internal composition, the frame is usually inserted into a pre-sewn cover. that encases the top and sides of the unit. A border fabric that matches the mattress exterior is applied to the sides, and a dust cover is added to the face.

Movable sewing head is fed side panels and tape manually as it seals them to mattress cover.

Interzum 2013 on track for success

All Koelnmesse's events relating to home living, interior design and furnishings enjoy great popularity all over the world and can boast high

booking levels with an excellent demand for space. interzum, the international venue for the supplier industry, is no exception: Some 612

companies made definite bookings by June. This corresponds to an increase of approx. 8 % as compared to the same period in 2010.

147

Matthias Pollmann, Project Manager of interzum

Koelnmesse said that the space in many of the halls is thus already virtually sold out. In particular, the event's popularity with foreign firms shows no signs of abating. In 2013, interzum will also be enhancing its profile with the InnoMateria trade fair and congress, which will take place parallel to the suppliers show for the first time. The available space at interzum 2013 is highly sought after - in fact, it is already becoming scarce in some halls. “The level of bookings is extraordinarily good, a great many exhibitors took advantage of the early bird period and have confirmed their participation,” explains Matthias Pollmann, Project Manager of interzum. Of the 612 registrations already received, 195 have come from German companies and 417 from abroad. The biggest contingent of exhibitors comes from Italy, closely followed by Turkey

and Spain. interzum 2013 will also grow in terms of group organisations: associations from Brazil, Rumania, Sweden and Vietnam have been acquired for the forthcoming event. “It's very clear just how important interzum is as a platform for the global furniture supplier industry,” says Pollmann. As compared to the same point in 2010, there has been an approx. 8 % increase in the number of exhibitors and an almost 5 % rise in the amount of space booked. 1,450 exhibitors are expected to participate in 2013. These pleasing figures are also reflected in the high level of occupancy in Halls 6, 7, 8 and 9, where only smaller, individual spaces are still available. As a result of the new structure with three segments instead of seven, Hall 6 is now allocated to the Materials & Nature segment, Halls 7 and 8 to Function & Components and Hall 9 to Textile & Machinery.

Growing international participation. Italy and Turkey take the lead

148

“We're starting in pole position,” says Matthias Pollmann. “We will use this excellent starting point and the lead it gives us to set interzum 2013 on the home straight with further strategic measures designed to promote the format's development.” Every two years, as a major source of impetus for the design of tomorrow's living spaces, interzum showcases the industry's world firsts, product innovations and concept studies. The trade show format has evolved from a fair purely for suppliers into the sector's No. 1 innovation hub and is thus a must-attend event in the trade show diaries of decision-makers in the

furniture industry and interior finishing sector. Another success factor for interzum 2013 is the interdisciplinary InnoMateria trade fair and congress, which will take place parallel to the suppliers' show. The event is dedicated to the preliminary stages in the development of, for example, the kind of products on show at interzum. Visitors will thus gain a unique insight into new materials and their usability for furniture production and interior finishing. “The future starts at interzum. InnoMateria 2013 will be adding yet another interesting focal point: the theme of innovative

materials,” says Pollmann. “The two events complement one another excellently and will be proposing even more concepts and potential solutions for new developments to our visitors from all over the world.”

Strong demand for space in all segments

We conducted an exclusive interview with Mr. DENIZ BOYDAK, Sales and Marketing Manager of Boyteks, to learn about the expectations of Boyteks from the fairs, its targets and its market plans for the future. How is the intense fair marathon of 2012 going for Boyteks? In 2012, we have started our fair marathon with Interzum-Guangzhou and Evteks and continued with Furtex fair in Nigeria and Furnexpo Fair in Iraq. It is going well, as we have expected. In these fairs we have had the chance to display our mattress and upholstery fabrics and carpet collections, which is our new area of production, and in all of these fairs we experience things that are greater than we expect. There is ForMobile Fair that will be organized in July in Brazil. We believe that we will get similar results from this fair, too.

Why are there new fairs on the 2012 fair schedule of Boyteks? We have participated for the first time in Furtex Fair that was held in the city of Lagos of Nigeria and Furnexpo Fair, one of the most famous furniture fairs of the world that was organized in the city of Erbil of Iraq because of the economical crisis and the uncertainty dominant over all Europe. We have participated in these fairs in order to grow our market share and to add new markets into our portfolio. One of these fairs was organized in Africa, another was organized in the Middle East and the other one was organized in South America - all in places other than Europe. In addition to our available markets, we will focus also

on these regions benefiting from the advantages of the technology and our production capacity and hence our marketing activities for these regions will gradually increase. There is a serious amount of depression and decrease in demand in nearly all of the sectors in Europe which has completed its process of population increase. However, the increase of the population in the developing and developed countries in the Middle East, Africa and America make an increase in consumption and production inevitable. In parallel with the increase in consumption and demand, there are investors in these countries looking for new areas of investment.

153

For this reason, as Boyteks, we are planning to have a say also in these markets by offering our quality, product ranges, R&D products in order to cater for the increasing demand here and to provide the investors in quest of profitable investment with revenue. What is more, we develop collections suitable for these regions with the intense work of our product development and design team. Boyteks has laid the foundation of customer relations in order to increase its market share. How do these relations develop? During the fairs, we tell those who visit our stand for the first time that we would like to host them in Turkey and we make this invitation sincerely. They welcome this invitation as they see the economical development of Turkey. We receive these guests of ours coming to Istanbul from different parts of the world and receive them in our Istanbul office and showroom, which is an important transfer center for the region that it is located in. Here, the Regional Sales Representatives of Boyteks for Istanbul greet them and do the necessary presentations in the showroom area. What is more, we receive the guests in Kayseri if they have time and this way we have the chance to show our factory to them in Boydak Holding premises.

APEX Nonwovens widens its marketing network Operating in the field of nonwoven sales, APEX has been working with leading companies in Turkey and Europe. Aiming at penetrating the US market, the company has major targets. The sleep products such as mattresses, quilts, pillows and similar industries take the lead in the usage of nonwoven textiles. Offering antimicrobial, antibacterial, flame retardant, UV additive sunlight resistant and usage resistant products APEX has its main clientele in Central Anatolia. We conducted an exclusive interview with Himmet Atik, Founding General Manager of Apex and Ergun Ciftci, Foreign Marketing Manager.

When was your company established and what areas it has been mainly operating? Himmet Atik: Our company was established in 2011 with the name of Apex Orgusuz Teknik Tekstil Destek Hizmet Sanayi ve Tic. Ltd. Sti. (Apex Nonwoven Technical Textile Support Services Ind. And Trade Ltd.) in Adana Haci Sabanci Organized Industrial Zone. I should say that our initial field of activity was the medicine industry because we had had a success in this field with another title called “Amet Disposables since 1995. I take pride in saying that the establishment of Apex had been possible because of the leadership of Amet in its field with

a record success of selling its main item Nonwoven Spunbond. We can mention other fields of activity as industry, construction, geotextile, filtration and packaging. Could you furnish us about your production facilities and your production capacity? Himmet Atik: Operated by 85 persons, our factory has been producing a wide range of products on a covered area of 7 thousand square meters. A lot of different products are produced at very good conditions and offered to the market. The main raw material in our production is 'nonwoven'. We had a major target to meet our raw material

155

by ourselves for a long time. With a machine investment we made last year, we can now produce and sell nonwovens. With the same reason, we established APEX Company to focus on nonwoven sales. I can proudly say that we have a fully integrated facility now. We sell in domestic and international markets. Our expert, reliable and professional R&D team has been continuing to develop new products and to assure quality of products. Do you have any priorities in production? What makes you different than your competitors? Himmet Atik: Our first priority in production is, of course, quality. We start with the best raw material. Then, we care for our machinery to get maximum performance. We also place extra importance on training of our operators to provide them best troubleshot. We are very strict on working at hygienic conditions. We made serious investments to offer distinctive products produced at hygienic conditions. As the last evidence of these, we received ISO

13485 certificate certifying that our products are friendly with human health. What differs us from our competitors is that our machine park is equipped equipped with the latest technology. The feedbacks we receive from our customers make us very happy and proud. Another major target of APEX is to be a 100% green plant with making all of its products from recyclable materials as per our environmentally friendly attitude, which increases our interest for renewable energy resources and we are already planning this. Our goal is to provide part of the energy which we consume from the nature by using the biggest source, the sun, in our region. I think that this responsibility of Apex can be a good example for other companies in the market. You have recently started to serve the mattress and other sleep products industry. Could you furnish us with your activity about this? Ergun Ciftci: Established to make nonwoven sales our company APEX has been continuing its operations. Although we are officially new in this

Mrs. Suna Atik, Mr. Himmet Atik and Mr. Ergun Ciftci

field, we have a good experience towards the sector. I, myself, worked almost two decades within the structure of Sabanci. Combined with the advantage of our integrated facility, our experience moved us one step forward in the market. Our latest machinery in the field of our main row material nonwovens made us more powerful. We have a monthly capacity of 300 tons. One of the reasons why we entered in this field was to find solution to the problems we would face during our works. For we offer products which we would buy and use before, we are conscious of what customers would expect. It is a big advantage to know the features of products that are produced and offered to the market. We develop and offer antimicrobial, antibacterial, flame retardant, UV additive resistant to sunlight and usage for mattresses. Besides hygienic products, nonwoven is mostly used in the bedding industry. The main material of pillowcase, pillow covers and mattress pad is nonwoven. We produce this product at almost all colors. Main customer market for our products is currently Kayseri. How competitive are you in domestic and international markets? What are your expectations at this regard? Ergun Ciftci: There is a harsh competition in domestic market. We are especially competing with the cheap products coming from the Far East. The new regulation imposing fund on import nonwovens helped the manufacturers. Although we have a very young history we are cooperating with domestic and foreign companies. We are exporting especially to respectful markets such as England, Germany, France, Italy and Belgium. We decided to penetrate the USA market this year. We participated in various fair organizations. We would like to carry our current situation and potential even forward and grow more. There are many different applications we can realize with nonwoven material. We are also planning to add new ones to our production line in our facility.

Change of guards at Hohenstein Institute's Down and Feather Test Centre

157

The quality of filling of down and feather bedding is defined primarily by its filling properties. To be able to assess the filling properties, i.e. the elasticity of the feathers and downs, the mechanical stresses are adjusted in laboratory tests whilst sleeping. Then it is determined to what extent the filling returns to its old shape within a defined time frame.ŠHohenstein

Gertrud Kenngott (left side), although retired, will be working as a consultant to support Alexandra Hlawatsch, the new manager of the Down and Feather Test Centre at the Hohenstein Institute and her team. ŠHohenstein

Gertrud Kenngott handed over responsibility as manager of the Down and Feather Test Centre at the Hohenstein Institute in BĂśnnigheim to Alexandra Hlawatsch. But there is no question of "retirement" for Kenngott. Having more than 38 years' experience in the testing and assessment of bedding materials, she will continue to make this available to her successor and the team of 6 by working as a consultant. The team's task is the quality testing of feather and down fillings according to their composition, animal species and contents. They also test the

cleanliness and hygiene of the filling material and the impermeability of the cover for customers worldwide. The Down and Feather Test Centre is also integrated into European standards work and the work of international feather and bedding associations. It is recognized internationally through the European Down and Feather Association e.V. (EDFA) and the International Down and Feather Bureau (IDFB). Since 1974 Kontrollgemeinschaft Traumpass e.V has had random tests carried out on selected bedding materials of its 21 members for the

158

The Feather Test Centre at the Hohenstein Institute was founded in 1974. Today it carries out regular tests on down and feather filling materials based on the European Labelling Regulation DIN EN 12934 for Kontrollgemeinschaft Feder-Siegel e.V. Overview of the test laboratory. ŠHohenstein

purposes of quality assurance. The successful alignment with the European Labelling Regulation DIN EN 12934 is the pre-requisite for the "Traumpass" Feather Seal. Here experts from the Hohenstein Institute determine both the percentage share of feathers and downs in the fillings as well as the original animal species of the filling. The results are compared against details provided by the manufacturers by an independent lawyer. In the event of deviations, infringement of the quality assurances is punished on the

label by the Kontrollgemeinschaft. This may lead to the withdrawal of the label. The tests which are still carried out meticulously by hand with tweezers are therefore an important component of a well-organized acquisition and test system of Kontrollgemeinschaft Federn-Siegel e.V. Many German and foreign manufacturers of down jackets and sleeping bags also call upon the services of the Hohenstein Down and Feather Test Centre, to service the booming market with tested products.

Employees in the Feather Test Centre determine the bird species under the microscope. In principle downs are higher-quality and more expensive than feathers as they have better filling properties and higher heat insulation.ŠHohenstein

They also benefit from the additional test and services provided, for example in the area of physiological comfort. In this way the Hohenstein laboratories can determine the individual wearing and/or sleeping comfort of a down jacket, a down cover or sleeping bag respectively and if requested they can be identified with the Hohenstein Quality Label. In combination with the data on the filling material, comprehensive quality statements for a product can be made which will help retailers provide wellqualified advice.

Natural latex beds

Sleeping peacefully through the night is essential for having a good start the next morning and sleeping peacefully needs a quality mattress first. Natural latex beds will give you a comfortable sleep and ensure a charged up and energetic body to take on the challenges of daily activities.

161

What is a natural latex bed? The mattress on natural latex beds comes from heven brasiliensis or the rubber tree. The rubber tree secretes white milk-like juice when its bark is cut. Whipping and baking and treating this white substance convert it into natural latex. It is the best-known natural material used for mattresses or padding. The process does not harm the tree. Just like foam beds, the natural latex beds do not contain springs. The central part of the natural Latex beds is pure latex. This core is 6 inches thick for extra comfort. Then there is a smooth cover of stretchable, 100 percent organic, cotton and pure wool. On the outer side is a green colored cotton fabric. Natural latex beds make use of all natural components. The fabric, which is used for its mattress, is also organic cotton. Other substances present in natural latex beds, besides 90 to 95 percent natural latex are: 2 to 3 percent zinc oxide -1 to 2 percent fatty acid soaps -1 to 2 percent sulfur -1 to 2 percent sodium These substances have to be used in little quantities during the process of manufacturing of natural latex beds. Most of it evaporates and the end product is washed at least three times.

An active heven brasiliensis

Benefits of Natural Latex Natural latex beds provide some exclusive health benefits. They take the shape of the curves of your body, as you lie on them. They help to prevent force points during your sleeping hours. Natural Latex is an outstanding material, which gives a soft hold to your body. It invigorates you and keeps you in perfect physical condition. It lasts for a very long time, giving you the full value for your money. Natural latex beds readily adapt to your body and relieve muscular strain. This reduces and also eliminates interrupted sleep patterns and gives you a healthy body. Natural latex beds also weigh above your regular beds and mattresses in many ways. They are free from all sorts of allergens, irritants like sulfur or boric

162

acid, do not promote the growth of microbes by virtue of being dust, mite and mildew resistant, are odor free, and give a natural support to your back. Natural Latex beds are also completely biodegradable. Natural latex beds are available in three degrees of stiffness' hard, medium, and soft. Choosing the right rigidity will depend on your requirement. If you are switching over to natural latex beds because of a back problem, hard or medium natural latex beds would be right for you. Natural Latex beds are especially beneficial for people who are prone to allergies or are sensitive to certain synthetic materials. It has the advantage of being 100 percent natural. While buying natural latex beds, you may get confused between natural latex and talalay latex. Talalay latex also uses latex as its main component, but only up to 40 percent. The rest is synthetic. It combines the best qualities of both natural latex and synthetic. Where natural latex gives it smooth and comfortable feel, synthetic increases its life span. Natural Latex Products Besides natural latex beds, natural latex is used for mattresses, pillows, cushions, mattress toppers, and floor beds. Introduce it to your life and you will never complain of a disturbed sleep.

The mattress on natural latex beds comes from this tree which secretes white milk-like juice when its bark is cut. Whipping and baking and treating this white substance convert it into natural latex.

Needlepunched fabric: A manufacturing process for which high strength, lightweight, non-woven construction fabrics are produced. These fabrics are produced by garneting fibers, entangling or interlocking these fibers together by a series of barbed needles and then mechanically bonding or fusing them together via heat to produce a fabric without glue or binders. Needlepunched pad: A manufacturing process used to produce insulator pads and non-woven fabrics whereby loose, garneted fibers are interlocked by a series of barbed needles. Non-woven fabric: Textile structure produced by bonding or interlocking fibers resulting from mechanical, chemical, thermal or solvent processes, or combinations thereof. Offset coils: An hourglass type coil on which portions of the top and bottom convolutions have been flattened. In assembling the innerspring unit, these flat segments of wire are hinged together with helicals. Orthopedic: General term that implies a bed set will promote proper postural alignment and support. Does not necessarily mean hard or boardy feeling. Panel: The part of the ticking that constitutes the horizontal surfaces (top or bottom) of a mattress. Peak heat release rate: Measurement

of the maximum rate of energy being released during a predetermined test period, usually expressed in kilowatts or kW. Also called the “rate of peak heat release” or “maximum rate of heat release.” Pedestal-type metal or wood bed frame: A low-profile bed frame with a solid pedestal base underneath each side of the frame, instead of legs. Pillow-top mattress: A mattress featuring a surface finishing treatment where a separate encasement of soft materials is attached to the entire surface on top of existing cover and upholstery. Pocketed coil: See Marshall. Polyurethane foam: Synthetic flexible polyurethane used for mattress cores and as a cushioning material. As a core, it is the main support system. Generic term covering both polyester and polyether foams. Print: A ticking fabric, which can be a woven or non-woven sheeting, commonly of synthetic fiber composition, on which a design has been printed. Queen: Conventional bedding product with finished mattress dimensions of 60 by 79-1/2 inches (1.52 by 2.02 m). Quilting: The surface treatment in which the cover, foam and/or other fibers are sewn together, using various stitch patterns on quilting machinery, including scroll or panel quilters (single

needle) and multi-needle quilters. Recovery: Measure of a cushioning material's ability to return to its original dimensions after force is removed. Renovated mattress: A used mattress that has been recovered with new ticking and possibly cushioning and other materials, and sometimes subjected to chemical or heat sanitization processes, prior to resale to the consumer. Resilience: A measure of the surface elasticity of foam or other cushioning material. ASTM D3574 specifies a test method for measuring resilience as the percentage by which a steel ball of defined mass rebounds from the surface of the cushioning material after having been dropped from a specified height. Rollator test: An approximately 230 lb. (104 kg), six-sided roller is repeatedly passed across a sleep set to simulate extended product wear and to estimate the structural strengths or weaknesses of the set and components (i.e., foam or quilt failure, breaking of helicals and coils) over time. Rollaway bed/cot: A portable metal bed/cot with a frame that folds in half with the mattress when not in use so it can be rolled into a closet (or elsewhere) for storage. Side rail: A metal or wood rail of a

bed frame, which hooks into the outside edges of a headboard and/or footboard to provide the support base for a foundation and mattress. Single-side mattress: A mattress that is intended for sleeping on only one side of the product. Sisal: A product of the henequen plant formed into a pad and used as an insulator. Slats: Narrow strips of wood used inside a foundation to support the coils. See Bed frame components. Also can refer to boards used in a bed frame to provide external support for the foundation. Sleep Products Safety Council hangtag: Used voluntarily by bedding producers since 1987, the safety hangtag program provides critical consumer

information about the safe use of sleep products. Manufacturers certify that they use the tag only on mattresses that meet the Federal Mattress Flammability Standard. The tag is available for purchase from SPSC in a hangtag or permanent label in English or bilingual Spanish/English and French/English versions. Smooth top: A plain surfaced mattress, neither tufted nor quilted. Also called button-free. Spring wire: Wire made from high carbon steel, characterized by toughness, strength and ductility. Typically furnished in 8 to 18 gauge for bedding industry applications. Static fatigue: Laboratory test measurement of cushioning material load bearing ability loss resulting from

constant predetermined compression. Steel unit construction: The spring construction used as the main support system inside a foundation. Stitch bonded pad: See Fales pad. Straightline deflection: Pertains to mattress innerspring construction and refers to the constant ratio between stress and strain, weight and movement. Support factor: See Compression modulus. Surface firmness: See Indentation force deflection. Tape: Narrow fabric material that closes over the rough-sewn edge where the top and bottom panels are joined to the border of a mattress or box spring. Also called “binding tape. Tape edge: A specified type of sewing

174

machine designed to stitch tape around the top and bottom edges of the mattress, joining the panels with the border and closing the mattress. TB 117: See Cal 117. TB 129: See Cal 129. TB 603: See Cal 603. TB 604: See Cal 604. Tempering: Heat treatment of wire to reduce stresses in steel introduced during wire forming process. Accomplished by electric charge, oven heat or both. Also known as “stress relieving.” Ticking: Fabric for covering mattresses and foundations. Common types include damask, knit, print, woven stripe and non-woven. Torsion bars: A type of spring system used in box springs characterized by wire forms. Trundle bed: A low bed that is rolled under a larger bed. In some constructions, the lower bed springs up to form a full bed or two single beds as in a high riser. Tufting: Consists of passing twine, cords or tape vertically through the mattress from top to bottom, knotting and securing the loops thus formed

with tufts, buttons or lacing. The purpose is to hold the mattress filling in place. Twin: Conventional bedding product with finished mattress dimensions of 38 by 74-1/2 inches (0.97 by 1.89 m). Twin extra long: Conventional bedding product with finished mattress dimensions of 38 by 79-1/2 inches (0.97 by 2.02 m). Urethane foam: See Polyurethane foam. U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC): A federal government agency that issues and enforces national safety standards for consumer products. With regard to mattresses, the CPSC has focused on flammability, air vent pull outs and bunk bed strangulation risks. Ventilator: Metal or plastic screens attached to the sides and sometimes the ends of mattresses to permit increased passage of air. Often used with hospital type mattresses with wet-proof covers. Visco-elastic foam: Also known as “memory foam.” Slow recovery urethane foams that are temperature

sensitive. They conform to the body and distribute pressure according to body heat and dynamics. Waterbed: A sleep system employing a water-filled vinyl bladder as its primary support system. When used with rigid framing to contain the vinyl components, is known as a “hardside.” See Hybrid. Often has cushioning and ticking outer covering. All versions are sometimes referred to as “flotation beds.” Welded grid top: Basic wire welded into a lattice to which box spring coils, formed wire or modules are fastened. Offers even weight distribution, yet allows some flex and give. Wood frame: The wood frame in a foundation on which the spring construction is mounted. Woven fabric: A ticking fabric produced by weaving. Designs may be printed onto the surface or woven into the product. Woven stripe: A woven ticking with colored stripes. Sometimes referred to as “ACA,” the traditional designation for an 8 oz. blue- and white-striped ticking.
