Director’s Message
Hawa Vandi Greetings. It has been an exciting experience to be a part of this year’s executive term, with great honor and sincere appreciation. It has indeed been a long journey with many challenges and hiccups, but my team members and I could reach the end of the term successfully. I present to you our end-of-term report. SCOPH PROGRAMs WORLD MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK 21 years ago, the mental health foundation began this event. Each year the Foundation continues to set the theme, organise and host the Week. The event has grown to become one of the biggest awareness weeks across the UK and globally.
WORLD HYPERTENSION DAY It is observed every May 17th in order to raise awareness and promote HTN prevention, detection and control. High blood pressure is the main risk factor to develop CV dz. >1 billion people live with HTN,a major cause of cardiovascular disease and premature death worldwide.

WORLD HEPATITIS DAY
The Member States of the WHO created World No Tobacco Day in 1987 to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable death and disease it causes This yearly celebration informs the public on the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies, what WHO is doing to fight the tobacco epidemic, and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and and to protect future generations.
World Hepatitis Day is commemorated each year on 28 July to enhance awareness of viral hepatitis, an inflammation of the liver that causes a range of health problems, including liver cancer. There are five main strains of the hepatitis virus – A, B, C, D and E. Together, hepatitis B and C are the most common cause of deaths, with 1.3 million lives lost each year. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, viral hepatitis continues to claim thousands of lives every day.
SCOPH PROGRAMS WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK
Global Handwashing Day
Breastfeeding is also known as nursing. It is a way of providing young infants the essential nutrients required for growth and development. World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every year from 1 to 7 August to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies around the world. According to WHO, breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to ensure child health and survival.
Global Handwashing Day was established by the Global Handwashing Partnership in 2008. It serves as a yearly reminder that handwashing with soap and water is one of the best steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Hand-washing is so important, especially at key times such as after using the bathroom, when preparing food, before eating, and after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose, inorder to prevent spread of germs and diseases
Breast cancer Awareness Month Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. October is considered Breast Cancer Awareness Month wherein annual campaigns are done to increase awareness of the disease. The goal is to get as many people as possible involved in raising awareness and funds to help support lifesaving research and lifechanging support.
World Diabetes Day World Diabetes Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness of diabetes as a global public health issue and what needs to be done, collectively and individually, for better prevention, diagnosis and management of the condition. World Diabetes Day is celebrated on this date is because of the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who codiscovered insulin along with Charles Best and John James Rickard Macleod in 1922.
SCOPH PROGRAMS World Anti-Microbial Awareness Week It is celebrated between 18-24 November each year. The aim is to increase awareness of global antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and to encourage best practices among the general public, health workers, farmers, animal health professionals and policy makers to avoid the further emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections.
World AIDS Day World AIDS Day was the first ever international day for global health. Every year, on the 1st of December, people around the world unite to show support for people living with HIV and to remember those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses.
World Cancer Day
World Kidney Day
Cancer is disease condition in which abnormal cells divide uncontrollably and destroy body tissue. World Cancer Day is an international day celebration on 4 February to raise awareness of cancer, encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment.
World Kidney Day is celebrated every second Thursday in March. It is a global campaign that aims to raise awareness of the importance of our kidneys to our overall health and to reduce the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems worldwide.
