Movies, Lectures and Exhibitions: 1. OPENING OF THE HIKING FESTIVAL, film 8 ½ Circles, Friday, September 15, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. in the Kinogledališče (movie theatre) of Tolmin. The film was made as the master’s thesis by Gregor Kresal at the David Lynch film academy. It was made between April and October 2015 in Iowa (USA), on the Mt. Blanc mountain chain in France, and in the Slovenian Alps on the slopes of Mt. Mangart and beneath the Boka Waterfall. In a form of an unusual psychological drama, the film presents the story of the Slovenian conquering of Mt. Muztagh Tower (7,273 m) in Pakistan in 2008 which ended in a tragedy. Entrance fee: €4/person. Screening of the film will be followed by a documentary Iz zakulisja (From the background, 25 min) talking about the filming of 8 ½ Circles, and a talk with the film crew. Awards: Alpi Giulie Cinema – Scabiosa Trenta Award 2017, Mountain Film Awards – Seven Summits Award 2017, Headline International FF – Award of Excellence 2016, International Independent Film Awards – Platinum Winner 2016.
2. LECTURE BY DAVO KARNIČAR, Friday, September 22, 2017 at 8:00 p.m., Stergulc House in Bovec. Davo Karničar is the most famous name of the Slovenian Alpine skiing. He skied down the numerous Slovenian Alpine mountain walls, from the top of Mt. Triglav, Špik and Jalovec, whilst in the European Alps he skied down the north-western wall of Mt. Eiger and the eastern wall of Mt. Matterhorn. He was one of the first skiers who took their skies to the Himalayas. In 1994, he and his brother Drejc were the first to ski down Mt. Anapurna (8,091 m). He was the first and still is the only person to ski from the peak of Mt. Everest – the highest mountain in the world (8,848 m). He has skied from the highest peaks of all continents. At the moment of the preparation of this publication he is preparing to ski down K2 – the second highest and technically extremely demanding mountain. We are keeping our fingers crossed and wish him a lot of success and a safe return back home where he will have a chance to hold a lecture and tell us more about another great story of the global Alpine climbing. 3. WORLD TOURISM DAY, Wednesday, September 27, 2017: Open door day in the Tolmin Gorges and the Triglav National Park (TNP) and the Julian Alps Community Evening. • On the World Tourism Day there will be an open door day organized in the Tolmin Gorges – the lowest entry point to the Triglav National Park. 4. LECTURE ŽIVLJENJE Z GORAMI (LIVING WITH MOUNTAINS), Marija and Andrej Štremfelj, Friday, September 29, 2017 at 7:00 p.m., Zelena hiša (Green House) in Kobarid. Andrej and Marija Štremfelj are legendary Slovenian Alpine climbers. Among the numerous Andrej’s climbing ascends and expeditions, the following three were the most noticed: Accompanied by Nejc Zaplotnik, he was the first Slovenian to set foot on the top of Mt. Everest (1972); In 1990 he and his wife Marija were the first married couple to conquer Mt. Everest: In 1992 he and his fellow climber Marko Prezelj received the Golden Ice-Axe award (the »Oscar« of the Alpine climbing) for the new trail in Mt. Kangchenzenga. Marija is also a top-class Alpine climber and the first Slovenian woman that set foot on an eight-thousand metre mountain (Broad Peak) in 1986 and is still the only Slovenian woman who conquered Mt. Everest. Both of them are also active mountain guides and a rare example of life companions who were able to successfully combine first-class Alpine climbing, family life, professional careers, and mountain guiding.
