Music is Colourful When listening to music, ask yourself this question: What colours come into your head when listening to a song? It may seem strange, however, it is very common for people with Chromesthesia - or sound-to-color synesthesia is a type of synesthesia in which heard sounds automatically and involuntarily evoke an experience of color. Even though this neurological condition is quite rare, many non-synesthetes do have music-to-color associations.

Try listening to four different types of songs; A fast pace song in a major scale; A fast but complex major song filled with high energy; A slow paced but darker song; And a very simple song in a minor key. Consider the colours that you chose and think why did you choose those specific hues. Was it because of the fast pace of the song? Did the muted songs of the piano

As these questions imply, the musical features that matter most in determining the colors people choose include the tempo (slow to fast), energy (low to high), volume (soft to loud), mode (minor to major), pitch (low to high), harmonic and melodic content (consonant to dissonant), complexity (simple to complex), and distortion (clear to distorted).

The next time you hear the song on the radio or at home, try to answer the question: What colours do you hear?
