– a horror story “I was broke. No job and no friends. But then I met Magda. She knew of a quiet village. And in the quiet village was an empty house. And in the empty house was a big safe full of money. It was easy, she said. In and out. Just like that. But things are never easy … and never what they seem.

I A man and a woman stood in an empty street. It was late at night, or early in the morning. Two a.m. They were both dressed in black with black gloves and black trainers. ‘What if the police catch us?’ The man said. His name was Jim. ‘They won’t,’ answered the woman. Her name was Magda. ‘How do you know?’ Jim was nervous. He moved from foot to foot. ‘Because we are in a small village in the middle of nowhere. Now, shut up and let’s get to work.’ Magda’s voice was quiet and angry. It was snowing gently. The stars were bright and white. Jim and Magda were standing outside a large stone house in Lympne, a small village 3

on the east coast of England. Magda worked on the lock, trying to open the door. ‘Are you sure the house is empty?’ Jim looked around. ‘Yes, I told you. There’s no one home. They’re on holiday in Spain and the nearest neighbours are in France. So relax.’ ‘How can I relax? This is wrong. We shouldn’t be here,’ Jim hissed.

‘This is easy. Remember, in this house is a safe. And in that safe is a lot of money. I can open the safe. You just help me carry the money back to the car.’ ‘I don’t like this.’ ‘You like money, don’t you?’ ‘Yes, but …’ ‘Then shut up. Look, we’re in.’ With a click, the old wooden door swung open. It was dark inside. Magda pushed Jim in and then followed. She closed the door. ‘Right,’ she grinned. ‘Let’s get to work.’
