The first policy issued

The first office

In 1846, New York Life adopted rules for granting its policy owners travel permits to California. After gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill, California in January 1848, New York Life was one of the leading insurers of men consumed by the Gold Rush. It is believed that the first New York Life policy issued was for William H. Cronin of San Francisco for $5,000 in 1849. He was a merchant by trade and 25 years old when he took out the policy.

On August 10, 1859, New York Life established an agency at San Francisco to service the people of that region. The office was opened by William F. Herrick. By 1866, the California agency was among the Company’s 10 leading offices.

The company’s individual life insurance in force in all fifty states totaled $937.49 billion as of December 31, 2015 (including $174.44 billion for New York Life Insurance and Annuity Corporation (NYLIAC)).
