The POZ 100 debuted in 2010. Although that wasn’t so long ago, much has changed since then. At that time, having a newer administration in the White House gave advocates hope for a renewed effort against HIV/AIDS at the federal level. Much work still remains to end the epidemic, but the years after our first list saw the creation of the first National HIV/AIDS Strategy and the lifting of the HIV travel ban, which led to the return of the International AIDS Conference to the United States. It’s through that lens that the first POZ 100 list was born. In hopes of supporting the work of HIV/AIDS advocates, we spotlighted 100 longtime warriors in the fight against the virus. We wanted to honor their service and provide them with recognition to inspire them to carry on. The list has a slightly different focus each year, such as youth or long-term survivors. It also varies from having only HIV-positive people to sometimes including our HIV-negative allies. Despite those differences,

the idea remains the same—thanking those in the HIV/AIDS struggle for their work. POZ is a mirror for the community, so we wanted to reflect back on all the efforts being made by so many. Some honorees were well known, but many of them were only known to their local communities before being nationally recognized. No list is ever definitive, but we’ve done our best to make each POZ 100 list representative of the epidemic. Please join us in celebrating the achievements of our POZ 100 honorees!

For the 2015 list, we chose to spotlight long-term survivors making a difference in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Living long-term with HIV is itself worthy of honor, but everyone on this year’s list goes that extra mile to combat the epidemic. The list is made up of people of all ages, and from a variety of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. 2014

For the 2014 list, we decided to focus on the future and celebrate youth under the age of 30 taking a stand against HIV/AIDS. We again reached out to the HIV community for nominations, but this time we sought both HIV-positive and HIV-negative individuals. For the 2013 list, we asked individuals and organizations to nominate an HIV-positive person who was an unsung hero in the fight against AIDS. It was the first time the list was composed entirely of HIV-positive individuals. As people living with the virus, they understand the challenges of accessing care, treatment and support. The 2012 list recognized people who have made a significant contribution to speeding up the end of AIDS. The list was broken down into several groups: the “Seekers” and the “Hunters”—scientists who make the groundbreaking discoveries that inch us closer to the cure; the “Defenders”—researchers who explore ways to prevent HIV; and the “Soldiers”—advocates, politicians and celebrities on the front line in the fight to end AIDS. The inaugural POZ 100 list highlighted heavyweights in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the United States. A good portion of this list are people who have been hard at work since the beginning of the epidemic. These powerful, influential and inspirational warriors have combatted HIV-related stigma, discrimination and criminalization, all of which keep people from getting tested for the virus, getting support and connecting to lifesaving care.
