hitelight is a part of the wide selection of Upper Pool design studios for 2008 offered by the Industrial Design Program at RMIT University, Melbourne Australia. Lecturer: Dr. Scott Mayson
Whitelight 08 was a collaborative studio collocated at RMIT and Foshan University, China. The artefact driven studio was aligned with an industry partner, National Star PRC, and undertaken within a professional studio framework. RMIT students also utilised CREE LED technology for their luminaires where optimum illumination was required. Students were required to design luminaires that utilised the emergence of high output one, three and five watt LED technology platforms. To develop a context for a commercial sight, and create innovative sustainable methods for production and end of life product take back.
The curated work in this book samples the outcomes of dedicated industrial design students who undertook a twelve week collaborative upper pool design studio in second semester 2008. They are:

and sleek minimalist colour schemes. The design is modular and intended to be placed in groupings that create a free flowing surface with in the building interior. Thalatha consists of 24, 1watt Luxeon side emitting LEDs.
Thalatha Inspired by Moorish geometry and Postmodernist philosophy, This luminaire is a decorative sculptural artifact designed for corporate foyers. It is designed to fill the void in an entrance hall or foyer of a building. The materials employed were designed to harmonise with the finishes and aesthetics commonly found in office interiors, marble, reflective counter tops 4

The luminaire’s “skin” is made from two identical ABS plastic halves which clip together. Pod is powered by six 1 watt Edixeon LEDS.
Pod Pod is a pendant luminaire inspired by natural organic forms. Light pours from the pods bladed openings, creating a subtle light projecting patterns on the floor. Pod serves as a decorative light for both commercial and residential dwellings. It is intended to be displayed in multiples that can hang in either a random or sequential manner. 5

Musha Musha is a pendant luminaire inspired by one of the Disney’s animation classics ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Musha is a massive pendant lamp made out of industrial wool felt that uses high power LEDs as its main light source for down light at the center of the lamp, provides enough light for dinning table center

serenity. The manufacturing process consists of a wax master which is electro-formed creating a 1- 2mm layer of metal. The wax is then vaporised creating a thin metal structure.
Aetaslux Light can serve a direct purpose of illuminating for task. However, light can do much more than this. It can affect the ambience of a space and affect how we perceive form and texture. This desk lamp was designed with these three aspects in mind. Whilst a functional light, its form is accentuated by the light produced and with its cool light it creates an ambiance of

would travel through the acrylic rods to the surrounding shells and project interesting patterns onto the surface light. The Sun is powered by Cree XR-E IP6 six led light engine and run by 1000mA Buck Puck driver. The cooling system is simply the use of one piece of heat sink, cut to the shape of a circle and stuck onto the back of the light engine by using arctic silver thermal epoxy.
The Sun The Sun, just like the name, it is inspired by the naturalist light that we have on the earth- Sun light. The shape itself represents the sun ray spreading out through the clouds towards earth. As a pendant light, The Sun can be broadly used in many different atmosphere, such as restaurants, function rooms or theatres etc.. It creates powerful luminaires which 8

component, which intensity of each hue is adjustable, thus resulting in numerous combinations of colours to suit different moods and atmospheres, highlighting its versatility. Harlequin can provide a range of colour, from angry and vibrant red, romantic pink-purple hues to soothing blue-green, to suit any event. Therefore, in functionality aspect, Harlequin answers the need of mood lighting for public places.
Harlequin Harlequin is inspired by the eccentricities of circus realm, in combination with the radiance of ever-changing north light, aurora. As a pendant luminaire, Harlequin’s shape, shades of colours, and the pattern of its reflection, emits a strong presence in an interior space. It uses the sustainable material, HDPE, roto-moulded into shape, as well as 3 watt RGB LEDs for the electrical 9

that created a warm dreamscape adding to the experience of watching a movie under the stars.
Crysalis Crysalis is an outdoor luminaire that is intended to light a pathway through the Royal Botanical Gardens for the Moonlight Cinema.
Crysalis is illuminated with one 1 watt CREE LED.
This light was inspired by the faceted form of quarts stones. I wanted to create a light

layers of patterned laser cut fabric. The profiled fabric flowers project patterns onto the surrounding surfaces. Dressing consists six 3 watt LEDs.
Dressing Dressing is a pendant and floor light designed for womans clothing stores. It is inspired by the female form, womans garments and oriental flowers. The Luminaire is made from a laser cut polycarbonate frame covered with two

that provides task or mood light to the space. A feature of the Kolida is its use of a physical fin dimming system that changes the intensity of the light, by opening and closing the fins to limit the protrusion of light.
Kolida The kolida is an innovative luminaire that combines, movement and changing colour to provide a unique lighting experience. The main feature of the luminaire is the development of an array of RGB LEDs at its base. This array projects a kaleidoscope of colour across an interior space. Six white LEDs are aligned with the fin structure 12
