Number Of Things a Public Relation Manager Needs to Do Public relations has been the backbone of the organization since managers have learned the importance of having better ties with stakeholders. Irrespective of the scope of organizational functionalities, ownership status and reputation, it is important for the firm to deploy an effective public relation strategy. Establishing and maintaining purposeful relations with customers, clients, vendors, Government and general public, alike, is a tough task and requires a very diverse and complex set of skills. With growing trend of globalization, and the rapid expansion of businesses, it has become imperative for companies to develop long term relations with stakeholders and simultaneously manage relevant public affairs; otherwise the image of the company remains at stake. Failure to build an efficient public relation team and devise effective plans can bring misfortune to the company’s name followed by loss of credibility. It is for this reason only that public relation managers are required to nurture a diverse set of skills; generally speaking advocacy, diplomacy, communication and networking skills are expected to be present in a PR manager. It would be appropriate to say, PR manager is not just a communication handling person, you can also call him a marketer, journalist, analyst and even a sociologist. As an advocate, a public relation manager is required to focus on how to register the company in the minds of people, as positive contributor to the society and likewise a good corporate citizen. PR manager act as a campaigner for the company on all professional and public forums, helping the firm to increase its good will and, simultaneously, its fan following. This also helps a brand establish a local or global brand community of loyal customers and supporters. As a communication expert, public relation manager is required to draft communication policies and effectively use relevant communication tools, such as press releases, live interaction with public and several other popular mediums. However, irrespective of the medium through which the message is dispatched, PR managers must ensure its relevance with the audience and also ensure its clarity. To gain command over these job responsibilities, PR managers should have good journalism, social and psychological interpretation skills so that the message can be created with good understanding of the audience. Another hat a public relation manager is expected to wear is of a problem solving marketer. When faced with issues damaging the image of the firm, and in seemingly difficult times, PR managers are required to restore the firm’s credibility, glorify its achievements or otherwise clear misunderstandings. For all of the above mentioned roles to be fulfilled appropriately, a public relation manager must have the tendency to improvise at work, think out of the box and also a willingness to learn continuously. Public relations are directly subjected to changing trends in the industry and also to changing consumer preferences; therefore PR managers must not make their company policies look obsolete or else they would be packing their bags soon.
